The usual treatment of a (first order) classical field theory such as electromagnetism has a little drawback: It has a primary constraint submanifold that arise from the fact that the dynamics is governed by the antisymmetric part of the jet variables. So it is natural to ask if there exists a formulation of this kind of field theories which avoids this problem, retaining the versatility of the known approach. The following paper deals with a family of variational problems, namely, the so called non standard variational problems, which intends to capture the data necessary to set up such a formulation for field theories; moreover, we will formulate a multisymplectic structure for the family of non standard variational problems, and we will relate this with the (pre)symplectic structure arising on the space of sections of the bundle of fields. In this setting the Dirac theory of constraints will be studied, obtaining among other things a novel characterization of the constraint manifold which arises in this theory, as generators of an exterior differential system associated to the equations of motion and the chosen slicing. Several examples of application of this formalism are discussed: Two of them motivated from the physical point of view, that is, electromagnetism and Poisson sigma models, and two examples of mathematical application. In the case of electromagnetism, it is shown that this formulation avoids the problems arising in the usual approach.
We give an expansion of the solution of the evolution equation for the massless Dirac fields in the outer region of de Sitter-Reissner-Nordström black hole in terms of resonances. By means of this method we describe the decay of local energy for compactly supported data. The proof uses the cut-off resolvent estimates for the semi-classical Schrödinger operators from Bony and Häfner, 2008. The method extends to the Dirac operators on spherically symmetric asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds.
A generalized KdV equation is formulated as an exterior differential system, which is used to determine the prolongation structure of the equation. The prolongation structure is obtained for several cases of the variable powers, and nontrivial algebras are determined. The analysis is extended to a differential system which gives the Camassa-Holm equation as a particular case. The subject of conservation laws is briefly discussed for each of the equations. A Backlund transformation is determined using one of the prolongations.
At present the theory of skew-symmetric exterior differential forms has been developed. The closed exterior forms possess the invariant properties that are of great importance. The operators of the exterior form theory lie at the basis of the differential and integral operators of the field theory. However, the theory of exterior forms, being invariant one, does not answer the questions related to the evolutionary processes. In the work the readers are introduced to the skew-symmetric differential forms that possess evolutionary properties. They were called evolutionary ones. The radical disti…
This paper addresses the issue of structure-preserving discretization of open distributed-parameter systems with Hamiltonian dynamics. Employing the formalism of discrete exterior calculus, we introduce a simplicial Dirac structure as a discrete analogue of the Stokes-Dirac structure and demonstrate that it provides a natural framework for deriving finite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian systems that emulate their infinite-dimensional counterparts. The spatial domain, in the continuous theory represented by a finite-dimensional smooth manifold with boundary, is replaced by a homological manifold-l…
In this work, we construct the algebra of differential forms with the cube of exterior differential equal to zero on one-dimensional space. We prove that this algebra is a graded q-differential algebra where q is a cubic root of unity. Since the square of differential is not equal to zero the algebra of differential forms is generated not only by the first order differential but also by the second order differential of a coordinate. We study the bimodule generated by this second order differential, and show that its structure is similar to the structure of bimodule generated by the first order…
A role of skew-symmetric differential forms in mathematical physics relates to the fact that they reflect the properties of conservation laws. The closed exterior forms correspond to the conservation laws for physical fields, whereas the evolutionary forms correspond to the conservation laws for material media. Skew-symmetric differential forms can describe a conjugacy of any objects (that correspond to the conservation laws). The closed exterior forms describe conjugated objects. And the evolutionary forms, whose basis are deforming manifolds, describe the process of conjugating objects and o…
We present a possible generalization of the exterior differential calculus, based on the operator d such that d^3=0, but d^2\not=0. The first and second order differentials generate an associative algebra; we shall suppose that there are no binary relations between first order differentials, while the ternary products will satisfy the cyclic relations based on the representation of cyclic group Z_3 by cubic roots of unity. We shall attribute grade 1 to the first order differentials and grade 2 to the second order differentials; under the associative multiplication law the grades add up modulo …
A theorem of Maurer-Cartan type for Lie algebroids is presented. Suppose that any vector subbundle of a Lie algebroid is called interior differential system (IDS) for that Lie algebroid. A theorem of Cartan type is obtained. Extending the classical notion of exterior differential system (EDS) to Lie algebroids, a theorem of Cartan type is obtained.
We give a two-parameter quantum deformation of the exterior plane and its differential calculus without the use of any R-matrix and relate it to the differential calculus with the R-matrix. We prove that there are two types of solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation whose symmetry group is $GL_{p,q}(2)$. We also give a two-parameter deformation of the fermionic oscillator algebra.
The structure of the solution space of the Dirac equation in the exterior Schwarzschild geometry is analyzed. Representing the space-time inner product for families of solutions with variable mass parameter in terms of the respective scalar products, a so-called mass decomposition is derived. This mass decomposition consists of a single mass integral involving the fermionic signature operator as well as a double integral which takes into account the flux of Dirac currents across the event horizon. The spectrum of the fermionic signature operator is computed. The corresponding generalized fermi…
A role of the exterior differential forms in field theory is connected with a fact that they reflect properties of the conservation laws. In field theory a role of the closed exterior forms is well known. A condition of closure of the form means that the closed form is the conservative quantity, and this corresponds to the conservation laws for physical fields. In the present work a role in field theory of the exterior forms, which correspond to the conservation laws for the material systems is clarified. These forms are defined on the accompanying nondifferentiable manifolds, and hense, they …
For For a given PDE system, or an exterior differential system possessing a Lie group of internal symmetries the orbit reduction procedure is introduced. It is proved that the solutions of the reduced exterior differential system are in one-to-one correspondence with the moduli space of regular solutions of the prolongation of the original system. The isomorphism between the local characteristic cohomology of the reduced unconstrained jet space and the Lie algebra cohomology of the symmetry group is established. The group-invariant Euler-Lagrange equations of an invariant variational problem a…
We show that the exterior algebra bundle over a curved spacetime can be used as framework in which both the Dirac and the Einstein equations can be obtained. These equations and their coupling follow from the variational principle applied to a Lagrangian constructed from natural geometric invariants. We also briefly indicate how other forces can potentially be incorporated within this geometric framework.
In this paper we present a far-reaching generalization of E. Vessiot's analysis of the Darboux integrable partial differential equations in one dependent and two independent variables. Our approach provides new insights into this classical method, uncovers the fundamental geometric invariants of Darboux integrable systems, and provides for systematic, algorithmic integration of such systems. This work is formulated within the general framework of Pfaffian exterior differential systems and, as such, has applications well beyond those currently found in the literature. In particular, our integra…
Symmetries of variational problems are considered as symmetries of vector bundle valued exterior differential systems. This approach is then applied to third order ordinary variational equations of motion of the semi-classical spinning particle.
A Hamiltonian field theory for the macroscopic Maxwell equations with fully general polarization and magnetization is stated in the language of differential forms. The precise procedure for translating the vector calculus formulation into differential forms is discussed in detail. We choose to distinguish between straight and twisted differential forms so that all integrals be taken over densities (i.e. twisted top forms). This ensures that the duality pairings, which are stated as integrals over densities, are orientation independent. The relationship between functional differentiation with r…
A generalization of exterior calculus is considered by allowing the partial derivatives in the exterior derivative to assume fractional orders. That is, a fractional exterior derivative is defined. This is found to generate new vector spaces of finite and infinite dimension, fractional differential form spaces. The definitions of closed and exact forms are extended to the new fractional form spaces with closure and integrability conditions worked out for a special case. Coordinate transformation rules are also computed. The transformation rules are different from those of the standard exterior…
It is shown that two definitions for an exterior differential in superspace, giving the same exterior calculus, yet lead to different results when applied to the Poisson bracket. A prescription for the transition with the help of these exterior differentials from the given Poisson bracket of definite Grassmann parity to another bracket is introduced. It is also indicated that the resulting bracket leads to generalization of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket for the cases of superspace and brackets of diverse Grassmann parities. It is shown that in the case of the Grassmann-odd exterior differenti…
Exterior algebras and differential forms are widely used in many fields of modern mathematics and theoretical physics. In this paper we define a notion of $N$-metric exterior algebra, which depends on $N$ matrices of structure constants. The usual exterior algebra (Grassmann algebra) can be considered as 0-metric exterior algebra. Clifford algebra can be considered as 1-metric exterior algebra. $N$-metric exterior algebras for $N\geq2$ can be considered as generalizations of the Grassmann algebra and Clifford algebra. Specialists consider models of gravity that based on a mathematical formalis…
Aronszajn, Krzywicki and Szarski proved in \cite{AKS62} a strong unique continuation result for differential forms, satisfying a certain first order differential inequality, on Riemannian manifolds with empty boundary. The present paper extends this result to the setting of Riemannian manifold with non-empty boundary, assuming suitable boundary conditions on the differential forms. We then present some applications of this extended result. Namely, we show that the Hausdorff dimension of the zero set of harmonic Neumann and Dirichlet forms, as well as eigenfields of the curl operator (on $3$-ma…
The massless Dirac particle in the $C$-metric, representing the exterior gravitational field of a uniformly accelerating black hole, is studied. Classes of (quasi-)polynomial solutions to the radial and the polar parts of the Dirac equation, each of which is equivalent to the general Heun equation~(GHE), are obtained exploiting the underlying $su(1,1)$ algebraic structures of the GHE.
Let $σ$ be an involution of a real semi-simple Lie group $U$, $U_0$ the subgroup fixed by $σ$, and $U/U_0$ the corresponding symmetric space. Ferus and Pedit called a submanifold $M$ of a rank $r$ symmetric space $U/U_0$ a {\it curved flat} if $T_pM$ is tangent to an $r$-dimensional flat of $U/U_0$ at $p$ for each $p\in M$. They noted that the equation for curved flats is an integrable system. Bryant used the involution $σ$ to construct an involutive exterior differential system $\ci_σ$ such that integral submanifolds of $\ci_σ$ are curved flats. Terng used $r$ first flows in the $U/U_0$-hiera…
We provide a brief overview on the application of the exterior calculus of differential forms to the ab initio formulation of field theories on random simplicial lattices. In this framework, discrete analogues of the exterior derivative and the Hodge star operator are employed for the factorization of discrete field equations into a purely combinatorial (metric-free) part and a metric-dependent part. The Hodge star duality (isomorphism) is invoked to motivate the use of primal and dual lattices (a dual cell complex). The natural role of Whitney forms in the construction of discrete Hodge star …
We describe the Dirac monopole using the Cheeger-Simons differential characters. We comment on the rôle of the Dirac string and on the connection with Deligne cohomology.
In this paper we present a new theory of calculus over $k$-dimensional domains in a smooth $n$-manifold, unifying the discrete, exterior, and continuum theories. The calculus begins at a single point and is extended to chains of finitely many points by linearity, or superposition. It converges to the smooth continuum with respect to a norm on the space of ``pointed chains,'' culminating in the chainlet complex. Through this complex, we discover a broad theory of coordinate free, multivector analysis in smooth manifolds for which both the classical Newtonian calculus and the Cartan exterior cal…
In this paper, one dimentional conformable fractional Dirac-type integro differential system is considered. The asymptotic formulae for the solutions, eigenvalues and nodal points are obtained. We investigate the inverse nodal problem and give an effective procedure for solving the inverse nodal problem with respect to given a dense subset of nodal points .
In the paper the role of conservation laws in evolutionary processes, which proceed in material systems (in material media) and lead to generation of physical fields, is shown using skew-symmetric differential forms. In present paper the skew-symmetric differential forms on deforming (nondifferentiable) manifolds were used in addition to exterior forms, which have differentiable manifolds as a basis. Such skew-symmetric forms (which were named evolutionary ones since they possess evolutionary properties), as well as the closed exterior forms, describe the conservation laws. But in contrast to …
Hom-connections and associated integral forms have been introduced and studied by T.Brzeziński as an adjoint version of the usual notion of a connection in non-commutative geometry. Given a flat hom-connection on a differential calculus $(Ω, d)$ over an algebra $A$ yields the integral complex which for various algebras has been shown to be isomorphic to the noncommutative de Rham complex (in the sense of Brzeziński et al.). In this paper we shed further light on the question when the integral and the de Rham complex are isomorphic for an algebra $A$ with a flat hom-connection. We specialise ou…
We extend the differential form representation of N = (n,n) supersymmetric quantum mechanics to the superconformal case. We identify the superalgebras occurring for n = 1,2,4, give necessary and sufficient conditions for their existence, and give explicit geometric constructions of their generators and commutation relations. Quantum mechanics on the moduli space of instantons is considered as an example.
We consider massive Dirac fields evolving in the exterior region of a 5-dimensional Myers-Perry black hole and study their propagation properties. Our main result states that the local energy of such fields decays in a weak sense at late times. We obtain this result in two steps: first, using the separability of the Dirac equation, we prove the absence of a pure point spectrum for the corresponding Dirac operator; second, using a new form of the equation adapted to the local rotations of the black hole, we show by a Mourre theory argument that the spectrum is absolutely continuous. This leads …
We consider the massive Dirac equation in the exterior region of the 5-dimensional Myers-Perry black hole. Using the resulting ODEs obtained from the separation of variables of the Dirac equation, we construct an integral spectral representation for the solution of the Cauchy problem with compactly supported smooth initial data. We then prove that the probability of presence of a Dirac particle to be in any compact region of space decays to zero as $t\to\infty$, in analogy with the case of the Dirac operator in the Kerr-Newman geometry.
We prove that in Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsäcker theory, a nucleus of charge $Z>0$ can bind at most $Z+C$ electrons, where $C$ is a universal constant. This result is obtained through a comparison with Thomas-Fermi theory which, as a by-product, gives bounds on the screened nuclear potential and the radius of the minimizer. A key ingredient of the proof is a novel technique to control the particles in the exterior region, which also applies to the liquid drop model with a nuclear background potential.
Building on the Utiyama principle we formulate an approach to Lagrangian field theory in which exterior covariant differentials of vector-valued forms replace partial derivatives, in the sense that they take up the role played by the latter in the usual jet bundle formulation. Actually a natural Lagrangian can be written as a density on a suitable "covariant prolongation bundle"; the related momenta turn out to be natural vector-valued forms, and the field equations can be expressed in terms of covariant exterior differentials of the momenta. Currents and energy-tensors naturally also fit into…
Differential geomtrical methods for deriving the Dirac equation in Curved Spacetime are presented. Einstein's field equation is applied in a novel manner; in the most current standard reference, Birrell and Davies, 1994 [1], the suggestions for deriving the Dirac equation in Curved Spacetime make no mention of employing Einstein's field equation. Thus, to date, the literature on the derivation of the Dirac equation could not include an expression for the presence of matter. This lack is consistent with earlier publications, including Lichnerowicz's well-known 1964 journal article [3], which pr…
We formulate Dirac-Kaehler fermion action by introducing a new Clifford product with noncommutative differential form on a lattice. Hermiticity of the Dirac-Kaehler action requires to choose the lattice structure having both orientabilities on a link. The Kogut-Susskind fermion and the staggered fermion actions are derived directly from the Dirac-Kaehler fermion formulated by the Clifford product. The lattice QCD action with Dirac-Kaehler matter fermion is also derived via an inner product defined by the Clifford product.
