We have developed an efficient isospin projection method in the shell model Monte Carlo approach for isospin-conserving Hamiltonians. For isoscalar observables this projection method has the advantage of being exact sample by sample. The isospin projection method allows us to take into account the proper isospin dependence of the nuclear interaction, thus avoiding a sign problem that such an interaction introduces in unprojected calculations. We apply our method in the calculation of the isospin dependence of level densities in the complete $pf+g_{9/2}$ shell. We find that isospin-dependent corrections to the total level density are particularly important for $N \sim Z$ nuclei.
We report on the development of a new theoretical tool that allows for isospin projection of Slater determinants and we present its first applications. In particular, we determine the isospin mixing in ground states of N=Z nuclei and discuss its dependence on the size of the harmonic-oscillator basis used in the calculations. We also discuss the unphysical contribution to the isospin mixing caused by the spurious isospin-symmetry breaking inherent to the mean-field approach. We show that these contributions may be as large as 30% of the value of the isospin-mixing parameter.
The authors state that results recently published by Carlsson and Toivanen "seem to contradict" the conclusions of some of our work. We show that this statement is based on a misinterpretation of the results of Carlsson and Toivanen.
Isospin-mixing corrections for superallowed Fermi transitions in {\it fp}-shell nuclei are computed within the framework of the shell model. The study includes three nuclei that are part of the set of nine accurately measured transitions as well as five cases that are expected to be measured in the future at radioactive-beam facilities. We also include some new calculations for $^{10}$C. With the isospin-mixing corrections applied to the nine accurately measured $ft$ values, the conserved-vector-current hypothesis and the unitarity condition of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix are te…
To investigate $pn$ pair correlations in $N=Z=\textrm{odd}$ nuclei, we develop a new framework based on the generator coordinate method of the $βγ$ constraint antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. In the framework, the isospin projection is performed before the energy variation to obtain the wave function optimized for each isospin. We apply the method to ${}^{10} \textrm{B}$ and show that it works well to describe coexistence of $T=0$ and $T=1$ states in low-energy spectra. Structures of low-lying states and $pn$ correlations are investigated. Strong $M1$($0^+_1\rightarrow 1^+_1$) and $E2$($1^+…

A cranked shell model approach for the description of rotational bands in $N\approx Z$ nuclei is formulated. The isovector neutron-proton pairing is taken into account explicitly. The concept of spontaneous breaking and subsequent restoration of the isospin symmetry turns out to be crucial. The general rules to construct the near yrast-spectra for rotating nuclei are presented. For the model case of particles in a j-shell, it is shown that excitation spectra and the alignment processes are well described as compared to the exact shell model calculation. Realistic cranked shell model calculatio…
The one- plus two-body isospin nonconserving nuclear interactions are included in the prediction of ground state energies of fp shell nuclei using spectral distribution theory. This in turn is used to calculate the linear term in the isobaric mass-multiplet equation and the predictions are then compared to experimental values after the addition of the Coulomb contribution. The agreement is found to be reasonable as observed for sd shell nuclei earlier. One also sees that in this method the contribution to the linear term comes almost completely from the one body isovector Hamiltonian and that …
The anomaly in Coulomb energy differences (CED) between the isospin T=1 states in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus 70Br and the analogue states in its even-even partner 70Se has remained a puzzle. This is a direct manifestation of isospin-symmetry breaking in effective nuclear interactions. Here, we perform large-scale shell-model calculations for nuclei with A=66-78 using the new filter diagonalization method based on the Sakurai-Sugiura algorithm. The calculations reproduce well the experimental CED. The observed negative CED for A=70 are accounted for by the cross-shell neutron excitations from the …
Correlated Basis Function theory and Fermi Hypernetted Chain technique are extended to study medium-heavy, doubly closed shell nuclei in j-j coupling scheme, with different single particle wave functions for protons and neutrons and isospin dependent two-body correlations. Central semirealistic interactions are used. Ground state energies, one-body densities, distribution functions and momentum distributions are calculated for 12C, 16O, 40Ca, 48Ca and 208Pb nuclei. The values of the ground state energies provided by isospin dependent correlations are lower than those obtained with isospin inde…
The question of isospin-symmetry breaking in nuclei of the $sd$ shell is addressed. We propose a new global parameterization of the isospin-nonconserving (INC) shell-model Hamiltonian which accurately describes experimentally known isobaric mass splittings. The isospin-symmetry violating part of the Hamiltonian consists of the Coulomb interaction and effective charge-dependent forces of nuclear origin. Particular attention has been paid to the effect of the short-range correlations. The behavior of $b$ and $c$ coefficients of the isobaric-mass-multiplet equation (IMME) is explored in detail. I…
We had previously used techniques involving isospin to count the number of states for three identical fermions in a single j shell with total angular momentum I=j. We generalize this to all I, but the main thrust of this work is to consider now a 4-fermion system. As before, one evaluates the eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian \sum_{i<j}[a + bt(i)t(j)] both from an isospin point of view and an angular momentum point of view. In the 4-particle case, we get a more limited result than in the 3-particle case, namely the number of T=0 states minus twice the number of T=2 states, all of a given angular …
The shell effect and isospin effect in nuclear charge radii are systematically investigated and a four-parameter formula is proposed for the description of the root-mean-square (rms) charge radii by combining the shell corrections and deformations of nuclei obtained from the Weizsäcker-Skyrme mass model. The rms deviation with respect to the 885 measured charge radii falls to 0.022 fm. The proposed formula is also applied for the study of the charge radii of super-heavy nuclei and nuclear symmetry energy. The linear relationship between the slope parameter L of the nuclear symmetry energy and …
Nuclear mass measurements have recently been extended conspicuously to proton-rich region in the upper $fp$ shell. The new data are utilized to study isospin symmetry breaking phenomena}using Coulomb displacement energy (CDE) and triplet displacement energy (TDE) as probes. The new mass data, either measured for the first time or with greatly improved accuracy, removed several previously found ``anomalies" in the systematical behavior in the $fp$ shell. Remarkably, more regular odd-even staggering patterns can be established in both CDE and TDE, calling for a uniform explanation in terms of is…
We present a short overview of our recent theoretical developments aiming at the description of exotic nuclear phenomena to be reached and studied at the next-generation radioactive beam facilities. Applications to nuclear shell structure and response of nuclei at the limits of their existence, with a special focus on the physics cases of astrophysical importance, are discussed.
The spin magnetic dipole transitions and the neutron-proton spin-spin correlations in $sd-$shell even-even nuclei with $N=Z$ are investigated using shell model wave functions. The isoscalar spin-triplet pairing correlation provides a substantial quenching effect on the spin magnetic dipole transitions, especially the isovector (IV) ones. Consequently, an enhanced isoscalar spin-triplet pairing interaction influences the proton-neutron spin-spin correlation deduced from the difference between the isoscalar (IS) and the IV sum rule strengths. The effect of the $Δ$ ($Δ_{33}$ resonance)-hole coupl…
The structures of odd-odd $N=Z$ nuclei in the lower \emph{fp} shell have been investigated with a new isospin-nonconserving microscopical interaction. The interaction is derived from a high-precision charge-dependent Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential using the folded-diagram renormalization method. Excellent agreements with experimental data have been obtained up to band terminations. Particularly, the relative positions of T=0 and T=1 bands were well reproduced. Calculations with another interaction obtained from the Idaho-A chiral potential showed similar results. Our calculations also give a g…
We investigate the radial-overlap part of the isospin-symmetry breaking correction to superallowed $0^+\to 0^+$-decay using the shell-model approach similar to that of Refs. [1, 2]. The 8 sd-shell emitters with masses between $A=22$ and $A=38$ have been re-examined. The Fermi matrix element is evaluated with realistic spherical single-particle wave functions, obtained from spherical Woods-Saxon (WS) or Hartree-Fock (HF) potentials, fine-tuned to reproduce the experimental data on charge radii and separation energies for nuclei of interest. The elaborated adjustment procedure removes any sensit…
Within the framework of Fermionic Molecular Dynamics a method is developed to better account for long range tensor correlations in nuclei when working with a single Slater determinant. Single-particle states with mixed isospin and broken parity build up an intrinsic Slater determinant which is then charge and parity projected. By minimizing the energy of this many-body state with respect to the parameters of the single-particle states and projecting afterwards on angular momentum ground state energies are obtained that are systematically lower than corresponding Hartree-Fock results. The reali…
GT transitions in $N=28\sim 30$ nuclei are studied in terms of a large-scale realistic shell-model calculation, by using Towner's microscopic parameters. $B({\rm GT})$ values to low-lying final states are reproduced with a reasonable accuracy. Several gross properties with respect to the GT transitions are investigated with this set of the wavefunctions and the operator. While the calculated total GT$^-$ strengths show no apparent disagreement with the measured ones, the calculated total GT$^+$ strengths are somewhat larger than those obtained from charge-exchange experiments. Concerning the I…
The shell evolution has been studied extensively within the framework of interacting shell model, while the studies from the single particle viewpoint is relatively lacking or neglected. In particular, the isospin dependence of spin-orbit splitting has become increasingly important as $N/Z$ increases in neutron-rich nuclei. Following the initial independent-particle strategy towards explaining the occurrence of magic numbers, we have systematically investigated the isospin effect on the shell evolution of neutron-rich nuclei within the Woods-Saxon (WS) mean-field potential plus the spin-orbit …
Background: The superallowed beta-decay rates provide stringent constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. To extract crucial information about the electroweak force, small isospin-breaking corrections to the Fermi matrix element of superallowed transitions must be applied. Purpose: We perform systematic calculations of isospin-breaking corrections to superallowed beta-decays and estimate theoretical uncertainties related to the basis truncation, time-odd polarization effects related to the intrinsic symmetry of the underlying Slater determinants, and to the function…
We perform particle-number projected mean-field study using the recently developed symmetry-projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equations. Realistic calculations have been performed in sd- and fp-shell nuclei using the shell model empirical intearctions, USD and GXPFIA. It is demonstrated that the mean-field results for energy surfaces, obtained with these shell model interactions, are quite similar to those obtained using the density functional approaches. Further, it is shown that particle-number projected results, for neutron rich isotopes, can lead to different ground-state shapes in c…
Background: Small asymmetry between neutrons and protons, caused by the differences in masses and charges of the up and down constituent quarks leads to the isospin symmetry breaking. The isospin non-conservation affects broad range of observables from superallowed Fermi weak interaction to isospin-forbidden electromagnetic rates. Its most profound and cleanest manifestation are systematic shifts in masses and excitation energies of mirror atomic nuclei. Purpose: Recently, we constructed the charge-dependent DFT that includes class II and III local interactions and demonstrated that the model …
We present results of systematic calculations of the isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections to the superallowed I=$0+,T=1 --> I=0+,T=1 beta-decays, based on the self-consistent isospin- and angular-momentum-projected nuclear density functional theory (DFT). We discuss theoretical uncertainties of the formalism related to the basis truncation, parametrization of the underlying energy density functional, and ambiguities related to determination of Slater determinants in odd-odd nuclei. A generalization of the double-projected DFT model towards a no core shell-model-like configuration-mixing appro…
The projected shell model analysis is carried out using the triaxial Nilsson+BCS basis. It is demonstrated that, for an accurate description of the moments of inertia in the transitional region, it is necessary to take the triaxiality into account and perform the three-dimensional angular-momentum projection from the triaxial Nilsson+BCS intrinsic wavefunction.
This paper overviews various phenomena related to the concept of isospin symmetry. The focus is on N~Z nuclei, which are excellent laboratories of isospin physics. The theoretical framework applied is nuclear Density Functional Theory and its isospin- and angular-momentum projected extensions, as well as symmetry-projected multi-reference models. The topics covered include: isospin impurities, superallowed beta decays, beta-transitions in mirror nuclei, isospin breaking hadronic interactions, mirror and triplet binding energy differences, and isoscalar pairing.
A systematic study of the yrast-band structure for the proton-rich, even-even mass-80 nuclei is carried out using projected shell model approach. We describe the the energy spectra, transition quadrupole moments and gyromagnetic factors. The observed variations in energy spectra and transition quadrupole moments in this mass region are discussed in terms of the configuration mixing of the projected deformed Nilsson states as a function of shell filling.
The projected shell model with configuration mixing for nuclear chirality is developed and applied to the observed rotational bands in the chiral nucleus $^{130}$Cs. For the chiral bands, the energy spectra and electromagnetic transition probabilities are well reproduced. The chiral geometry illustrated in the $K~plot$ and the $azithumal~plot$ is confirmed to be stable against the configuration mixing. The other rotational bands are also described in the same framework.
We study the shell-model formalism to include the isospin-symmetry-breaking correction ($δ_{C}$) to nuclear matrix element of superallowed $0^+\to 0^+$ Fermi $β$ decays of $T=1$ nuclei. Based on a perturbation expansion in a small quantity, such as the deviation of the overlap integral between proton and neutron radial wave functions from unity or of the transition density from its isospin-symmetry value, we derive that $δ_C$ can be obtained as a sum of six terms, including two leading order (LO) terms, two next-to-leading order (NLO) terms, one next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) term and on…
We investigate isospin-symmetry breaking effects in the sd-shell region with large-scale shell-model calculations, aiming to understand the recent anomalies observed in superallowed Fermi beta-decay. We begin with calculations of Coulomb displacement energies (CDE's) and triplet displacement energies (TDE's) by adding the T=1,J=0 isospin nonconserving (INC) interaction into the usual isospin-invariant Hamiltonian. It is found that CDE's and TDE's can be systematically described with high accuracy. A total number of 122 one- and two-proton separation energies are predicted accordingly, and loca…
The isospin breaking effects due to the Coulomb interaction in weakly-bound nuclei are studied using the Gamow Shell Model, a complex-energy configuration interaction approach which simultaneously takes into account many-body correlations between valence nucleons and continuum effects. We investigate the near-threshold behavior of one-nucleon spectroscopic factors and the structure of wave functions along an isomultiplet. Illustrative calculations are carried out for the T=1 isobaric triplet. By using a shell-model Hamiltonian consisting of an isoscalar nuclear interaction and the Coulomb term…
Chiral rotation observed in $^{128}$Cs is studied using the newly developed microscopic triaxial projected shell model (TPSM) approach. The observed energy levels and the electromagnetic transition probabilities of the nearly degenerate chiral dipole bands in this isotope are well reproduced by the present model. This demonstrates the broad applicability of the TPSM approach, based on a schematic interaction and angular-momentum projection technique, to explain a variety of low- and high-spin phenomena in triaxial rotating nuclei.
Total and parity-projected level densities of iron-region nuclei are calculated microscopically by using Monte Carlo methods for the nuclear shell model in the complete $(pf+0g_{9/2})$-shell. The calculated total level density is found to be in good agreement with the experimental level density. The Monte Carlo calculations offer a significant improvement over the thermal Hartree-Fock approximation. Contrary to the Fermi gas model, it is found that the level density has a significant parity-dependence in the neutron resonance region. The systematics of the level density parameters (including s…
The Projected Shell Model is a shell model theory built up over a deformed BCS mean field. Ground state and excited bands in even-even nuclei are obtained through diagonalization of a pairing plus quadrupole Hamiltonian in an angular momentum projected 0-, 2-, and 4-quasiparticle basis. The residual quadrupole-quadrupole interaction strength is fixed self-consistently with the deformed mean field and the pairing constants are the same used in constructing the quasiparticle basis. Taking $^{160}Dy$ as an example, we calculate low-lying states and compare them with experimental data. We exhibit …
The results of systematic calculations of isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections to superallowed beta-decays based on the self-consistent isospin- and angular-momentum-projected nuclear density functional theory (DFT) are reviewed with an emphasis on theoretical uncertainties of the model. Extensions of the formalism towards no core shell model approach with basis cutoff scheme dictated by the self-consistent particle-hole DFT solutions will be also discussed.
The density-dependent nuclear symmetry energy is directly related to the isospin asymmetry for finite and infinite nuclear systems. It is critical to determine the coefficients of symmetry energy and its related observables as it holds great importance in different areas of nuclear physics, such as analyzing the structure of ground state exotic nuclei and neutron star study. The ground state bulk properties such as nuclear binding energy, quadrupole deformation, two-neutron separation energy, the differential variation of two-neutron separation energy, and root-mean-square charge radius for Sc…
A systematic study of the yrast band in 154-164 Dy isotopes using the Projected Shell Model is presented. It is shown that, in the context of the present model, enlarging the mean field deformation by about 20 % allows a very good description of the spectrum of yrast band in these isotopes. The dependence of the B(E2) values on angular momentum is also better described when larger deformations are used. The observed oscillation of g-factors at low spin states remains an open question for this model.
The relativistic particle-vibration coupling (RPVC) model is extended by the inclusion of spin- and isospin-flip excitation modes into the phonon space, introducing a new mechanism of dynamical interaction between nucleons with different isospin in the nuclear medium. Protons and neutrons exchange by collective modes which are formed by isovector $π$ and $ρ$-mesons, in turn, softened considerably because of coupling to nucleons of the medium. These modes are investigated within the proton-neutron relativistic random phase approximation (pn-RRPA) and relativistic proton-neutron time blocking ap…
The nucleon pair shell model (NPSM) is casted into the so-called M-scheme for the cases with isospin symmetry and without isospin symmetry. The odd system and even system are treated on the same foot. The uncoupled commutators for nucleon-pairs, which are suitable for M-scheme, are given. Explicit formula of matrix elements in M-scheme for overlap, one-body operators, two-body operators are obtained. It is found that the $cpu$ time used in calculating the matrix elements in M-scheme is much shorter than that in the J-scheme of NPSM.
We use the auxiliary-fields Monte Carlo method for the shell model in the complete $(pf+0g_{9/2})$-shell to calculate level densities. We introduce parity projection techniques which enable us to calculate the parity dependence of the level density. Results are presented for $^{56}$Fe, where the calculated total level density is found to be in remarkable agreement with the experimental level density. The parity-projected densities are well described by a backshifted Bethe formula, but with significant dependence of the single-particle level-density and backshift parameters on parity. We compar…
We present the isospin- and angular-momentum-projected nuclear density functional theory (DFT) and its applications to the isospin-breaking corrections to the superallowed beta-decay rates in the vicinity of the N=Z line. A preliminary value obtained for the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element, |V_{ud}|=0.97463(24), agrees well with the recent estimate by Towner and Hardy [Phys. Rev. C{\bf 77}, 025501 (2008)]. We also discuss new opportunities to study the symmetry energy by using the isospin-projected DFT.
Mirror energy differences (MED) and triplet energy differences (TED) in the T=1 analogue states are important probes of isospin-symmetry breaking. Inspired by the recent spectroscopic data of 66Se, we investigate these quantities for A=66-78 nuclei with large-scale shell-model calculations. For the first time, we find clear evidences suggesting that the isospin nonconserving (INC) nuclear force has a significant effect for the upper fp shell region. Detailed analysis shows that in addition to the INC force, the electromagnetic spin-orbit interaction plays an important role for the large, negat…
We discuss equilibration times and isospin effect for various quantities in low-energy heavy-ion reactions. These include equilibration of mass, isospin, and total kinetic energy (TKE) in quasifission and deep-inelastic reactions. The calculations are performed using the time-dependent Hartree-Fock theory. The influence of shell effects on the equilibration times are also discussed in the context of theoretical and experimental results.
We calculate parity-dependent level densities for the even-even isotopes 58,62,66 Fe and 58 Ni and the odd-A nuclei 59 Ni and 65 Fe using the Shell Model Monte Carlo method. We perform these calculations in the complete fp-gds shell-model space using a pairing+quadrupole residual interaction. We find that, due to pairing of identical nucleons, the low-energy spectrum is dominated by positive parity states. Although these pairs break at around the same excitation energy in all nuclei, the energy dependence of the ratio of negative-to-positive parity level densities depends strongly on the parti…
The properties of $T=1/2$ mirror nuclei in the $fp$ shell have been studied with a microscopic residual interaction. The isospin-nonconserving interaction is derived from a high-precision charge-dependent Bonn \textit{NN} potential using the folded-diagram renormalization method. The level structures of the nuclei are calculated, obtaining excellent agreements with experimental observations till the $0f_{7/2}$ band termination. The role played by isospin symmetry breaking on ground-state displacement energies and mirror energy differences is discussed, which may help to explain the long-standi…
The superallowed beta-decay rates that provide stringent constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics are affected by nuclear structure effects through isospin-breaking corrections. The self-consistent isospin- and angular-momentum-projected nuclear density functional theory is used for the first time to compute those corrections for a number of Fermi transitions in nuclei from A=10 to A=74. The resulting leading element of the CKM matrix, |V_{ud}|= 0.97447(23), agrees well with the recent result by Towner and Hardy [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 77}, 025501 (2008)].
We study the extension of our translationally invariant treatment of few-body nuclear systems to heavier nuclei. At the same time we also introduce state-dependent correlation operators. Our techniques are tailored to those nuclei that can be dealt with in $LS$ coupling, which includes all nuclei up to the shell closure at $A=40$. We study mainly $p$-shell nuclei in this paper. A detailed comparison with other microscopic many-body approaches is made, using a variety of schematic nuclear interactions. It is shown that our methodology produces very good energies, and presumably also wave functi…
In an effort to elucidate the rich band structures observed in odd-neutron systems, triaxial projected shell model approach is extended to include three-quasineutron and five-quasiparticle configurations. This extension makes it possible to investigate the high-spin states up to and including the second band crossing. Detailed investigation has been performed for odd-mass Xe isotopes with the extended basis, and it is shown that character of the band crossing along the yrast line changes with shell filling of the 1h11/2 orbital. Further, it is observed that the three-quasiparticle state that c…
It has been debated whether the experimentally-identified superdeformed rotational band in $^{40}$Ar [E. Ideguchi, et al., Phys. Lett. B 686 (2010) 18] has an axially or triaxially deformed shape. Projected shell model calculations with angular-momentum-projection using an axially-deformed basis are performed up to high spins. Our calculated energy levels indicate a perfect collective-rotor behavior for the superdeformed yrast band. However, detailed analysis of the wave functions reveals that the high-spin structure is dominated by mixed 0-, 2-, and 4-quasiparticle configurations. The calcula…
Calculations in the sd and pf shells reported some time ago by Satuła\etal\ [Phys.~Lett.~B~407, 103 (1997)] are redone for an extended analysis of the results. As in the original work, we do calculations for one mass number in each shell and consider in each case the sequence of lowest energies for isospins 0, 2, and 4, briefly the symmetry spectrum. Following further the original work we study how this spectrum changes when parts of the two-nucleon interaction are turned off. The variation of its width is explored in detail. A differential combination $ε_\text{W}$ of the three energies was ta…
By the use of the latest experimental data on the spectra of $^{133}$Sb and $^{131}$Sn and on the analysis of properties of other odd nuclei adjacent to doubly magic closed shells the isospin dependence of a mean spin-orbit potential is defined. Such a dependence received the explanation in the framework of different theoretical approaches.
Capture of electrons by nuclei is an important process in stellar environments where excited nuclear states are thermally populated. However, accurate treatment for excited configurations in electron capture (EC) rates has been an unsolved problem for medium-heavy and heavy nuclei. In this work, we take the $^{93}$Nb $\rightarrow$ $^{93}$Zr EC rates as the example to introduce the Projected-Shell-Model (PSM) in which excited configurations are explicitly included as multi-quasiparticle states. Applying the prevalent assumption that the parent nucleus always stays in its ground state in stellar…
The available experimental data on shell evolution indicate that the strength of the spin-orbit (SO) single-particle potential may be enhanced in neutron-rich nuclei. We observe that such a simple scheme destroys the Harmonic Oscillator (HO) magic numbers N=8 and 20 and generates new SO magic numbers like N=6, 14, 16, 32 and 34. The traditional SO magic numbers like N=28 and 50 and N=14 seen in $^{22}$O are eroded somehow in neutron-rich nuclei due to the sensitivity of larger-$l$ orbitals to the depth of the central potential but they are more robust than the HO magic numbers. The N=82 shell …
Doublet bands observed in $^{124,126,130,132}$Cs isotopes are studied using the recently developed multi-quasiparticle microscopic triaxial projected shell model (TPSM) approach. It is shown that TPSM results for energies and transition probabilities are in good agreement with known energies and the recently measured extensive data on transition probabilities for the bands in $^{126}$Cs. In particular, it is demonstrated that characteristics transition probabilities expected for the doublet bands to originate from the chiral symmetry breaking are well reproduced in the present work. The calcul…
A full fp calculation is performed for states which were degenerate in a single-j-shell calculation in which isospin-zero two-body matrix elements were set to zero energy. Most of the splitting in a complete shell calculation (but not all) comes from the T=0 part of the interaction.
