We study the quantum phase diagram and excitation spectrum of the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ spin-1/2 Heisenberg Hamiltonian. A hierarchical mean-field approach, at the heart of which lies the idea of identifying {\it relevant} degrees of freedom, is developed. Thus, by performing educated, manifestly symmetry preserving mean-field approximations, we unveil fundamental properties of the system. We then compare various coverings of the square lattice with plaquettes, dimers and other degrees of freedom, and show that only the {\it symmetric plaquette} covering, which reproduces the original Bravais lattice, leads to the known phase diagram. The intermediate quantum paramagnetic phase is shown to be a (singlet) {\it plaquette crystal}, connected with the neighboring Néel phase by a continuous phase transition. We also introduce fluctuations around the hierarchical mean-field solutions, and demonstrate that in the paramagnetic phase the ground and first excited states are separated by a finite gap, which closes in the Néel and columnar phases. Our results suggest that the quantum phase transition between Néel and paramagnetic phases can be properly described within the Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson paradigm.
We present numerical results for an $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a inhomogeneous square lattice with tunable interaction between spins belonging to different plaquettes. Employing Quantum Monte Carlo, we significantly improve on previous results for the the critical point separating singlet-disordered and Néel-ordered phases, and obtain an estimate for the critical exponent $ν$ consistent with the three-dimensional classical Heisenberg universality class. Additionally, we show that a fairly accurate result for the critical point can be obtained from a Contractor Renormalization (CORE)…
We present thermodynamic measurements of various physical observables of the two dimensional S=1/2 isotropic quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice, obtained by quantum Monte Carlo. In particular we have been able to measure the infinite volume limit of the uniform susceptibility up to the inverse temperature beta=40, the analysis of which reveals the correct asymptotic behavior in excellent agreement with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory. The controversy over the existence of a crossover from quantum critical to renormalized classical regime is resolved.
The magnetization process of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on two-dimensional square-kagome lattice is studied theoretically. The metamagnetic jumps exist in the magnetization process at the higher edge of the 1/3 and 2/3 plateaus. The parameter-dependencies of the critical field and the magnitude of the magnetization jump at the higher edge of the 1/3 plateau are obtained by using the approximated state in the unit cell and compared with the nu- merical results of the exact diagonalization of 42 sites.
We discuss the ground state and the low-lying excitations of the spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the two-dimensional square-kagome lattice. This magnetic system belongs to the class of highly frustrated spin systems with an infinite non-trivial degeneracy of the classical ground state as it is known also for the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome and on the star lattice. The quantum ground state of the spin-half system is a quantum paramagnet likely with a finite spin gap and with a large number of non-magnetic excitations within this gap. The magnetization versus field curve sho…
We consider the thermodynamic properties of the quasi-two-dimensional spin-half Heisenberg ferromagnet on the stacked square and the stacked kagomé lattices by using the spin-rotation-invariant Green's function method. We calculate the critical temperature $T_C$, the uniform static susceptibility $χ$, the correlation lengths $ξ_ν$ and the magnetization $M$ and investigate the short-range order above $T_C$. We find that $T_C$ and $M$ at $T>0$ are smaller for the stacked kagomé lattice which we attribute to frustration effects becoming relevant at finite temperatures.
We present numerical exact results for the ground state and the low-lying excitations for the spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on finite square lattices of up to N=40 sites. Using finite-size extrapolation we determine the ground-state energy, the magnetic order parameters, the spin gap, the uniform susceptibility, as well as the spin-wave velocity and the spin stiffness as functions of the frustration parameter J2/J1. In agreement with the generally excepted scenario we find semiclassical magnetically ordered phases for J2 < J2^{c1} and J2 > J2^{c2} separated by a gapful quantum para…
A quantum phase transition is typically induced by tuning an external parameter that appears as a coupling constant in the Hamiltonian. Another route is to vary the global symmetry of the system, generalizing, e.g., SU(2) to SU(N). In that case, however, the discrete nature of the control parameter prevents one from identifying and characterizing the transition. We show how this limitation can be overcome for the SU(N) Heisenberg model with the help of a singlet projector algorithm that can treat N continuously. On the square lattice, we find a direct, continuous phase transition between Neel-…
The ground state of the square lattice bilayer quantum antiferromagnet with nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) neighbour intralayer interaction is studied by means of the dimer expansion method up to the 6-th order in the interlayer exchange coupling $J_3$. The phase boundary between the spin-gap phase and the magnetically ordered phase is determined from the poles of the biased Padé approximants for the susceptibility and the inverse energy gap assuming the universality class of the 3-dimensional classical Heisenberg model. For weak frustration, the critical interlayer coupling decrease…
We obtain a quantum dimer model (QDM) containing a Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point expressed by spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a diamond-like decorated square lattice. This lattice has macroscopically degenerated nonmagnetic ground states, which are equivalent to the Hilbert space of a square-lattice QDM. Then, a square-lattice QDM containing the RK point as a second-order effective Hamiltonian is obtained by introducing further neighbor couplings as perturbation. Our model can provide a new method for the experimental realization of a resonating valence bond state in the QDM.
We find evidence for decaying magnons at strong magnetic field in the square lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The results are obtained using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations combined with a Bayesian inference technique to obtain dynamics and are consistent with predictions from spin wave theory.
We investigate the thermodynamic properties of the frustrated bilayer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet at low temperatures in the vicinity of the saturation magnetic field. The low-energy degrees of freedom of the spin model are mapped onto a hard-square gas on a square lattice. We use exact diagonalization data for finite spin systems to check the validity of such a description. Using a classical Monte Carlo method we give a quantitative description of the thermodynamics of the spin model at low temperatures around the saturation field. The main peculiarity of the considered two-dimensional…
We use the DMRG method to calculate several energy eigenvalues of the frustrated $S=1/2$ square-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on $2L \times L$ cylinders with $L \le 10$. We identify excited-level crossings versus the coupling ratio $g=J_2/J_1$ and study their drifts with the system size $L$. The lowest singlet-triplet and singlet-quintuplet crossings converge rapidly (with corrections $\propto L^{-2}$) to different $g$ values, and we argue that these correspond to ground-state transitions between the Néel antiferromagnet and a gapless spin liquid, at $g_{c1} \approx 0.46$, and between t…
We study Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a diamond-like decorated square lattice perturbed by further neighbor couplings. The second-order effective Hamiltonian is calculated and the resultant Hamiltonian is found to be a square-lattice quantum-dimer model with a finite hopping amplitude and no repulsion, which suggests the stabilization of the plaquette phase. Our recipe for constructing quantum-dimer models can be adopted for other lattices and provides a route for the experimental realization of quantum-dimer models.
Effects of interlayer coupling and spatial anisotropy on spin-wave excitation spectra of a three-dimensional spatially anisotropic, frustrated spin-$\half$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAFM) is investigated for the two ordered phases using second-order spin-wave expansion. We show that the second-order corrections to the spin-wave energies are significant and find that the energy spectra of the three-dimensional HAFM shares similar qualitative features with the energy spectra of the two-dimensional HAFM on a square lattice. We also discuss the features that can provide experimental measures for…
We examine the thermal properties of the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice in the presence of an easy-plane single-ion anisotropy as well as the effects of an additional weak in-plane easy-axis anisotropy. In particular, using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we analyze the scaling of the correlation length near the thermal phase transition into the ordered phase. This allows us to quantify the temperature regime above the critical point in which -- in spite of the additional in-plane easy-axis anisotropy -- characteristic easy-plane physics, such as near a…
We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the two-dimensional square-kagome lattice with almost dispersionless lowest magnon band. For a general exchange coupling geometry we elaborate low-energy effective Hamiltonians which emerge at high magnetic fields. The effective model to describe the low-energy degrees of freedom of the initial frustrated quantum spin model is the (unfrustrated) square-lattice spin-1/2 $XXZ$ model in a $z$-aligned magnetic field. For the effective model we perform quantum Monte Carlo simulations to discuss the low-temperature properties of the squa…
We study the ground-state phase diagram of a Heisenberg model with spin $S=\frac{1}{2}$ on a diamond-like decorated square lattice. A diamond unit has two types of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, and the ratio $λ$ between the length of the diagonal bond and that of the other four edges determines the strength of frustration. It has been pointed out [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn {\bf85}, 033705 (2016)] that the so-called tetramer-dimer states, which are expected to be stabilized in an intermediate region of $λ_{\rm c}<λ<2$, are identical to the square-lattice dimer covering states, which ignited …
Using infinite projected entangled pair states, we study the ground state phase diagram of the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the square lattice directly in the thermodynamic limit. We find an unexpected partially nematic partially magnetic phase in between the antiferroquadrupolar and ferromagnetic regions. Furthermore, we describe all observed phases and discuss the nature of the phase transitions involved.
Infinite projected entangled pair states simulations of the $S=1$ bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the square lattice reveal an emergent Haldane phase in between the previously predicted antiferromagnetic and 3-sublattice 120$^\circ$ magnetically ordered phases. This intermediate phase preserves SU(2) spin and translational symmetry but breaks lattice rotational symmetry, and it can be adiabatically connected to the Haldane phase of decoupled $S=1$ chains. Our results contradict previous studies which found a direct transition between the two magnetically ordered states.
Thermal first-order phase transitions, Ising critical points, and reentrance in the Ising-Heisenberg model on the diamond-decorated square lattice in a magnetic field
We study the magnetization process of the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a distorted square-kagome lattice by the numerical-diagonalization method. The magnetization jump at one-third of the height of the saturation is examined in detail; we find that the jump becomes larger when a small distortion is switched on and that it is accompanied by an abrupt change in lines along microscopic spin directions. Our finite-size results successfully confirm that the magnetization jump in a spin-isotropic system is a macroscopic jump that survives in the thermodynamic limit and that the changes …
Aiming to describe frustrated quantum magnets with non-magnetic singlet ground states, we have extended the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) loop-expansion to derive a generalized Quantum Dimer Model containing only connected terms up to arbitrary order. For the square lattice frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet (J1-J2-J3 model), an expansion up to 8th order shows that the leading correction to the original RK model comes from dimer moves on length-6 loops. This model free of the original sign problem is treated by advanced numerical techniques. The results suggest that a rotationally anisotropic plaqu…
We present a high-temperature expansion (HTE) of the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data of Melzi et al. on Li2VOSiO4 [Phys. Rev. B 64, 024409 (2001)]. The data are very well reproduced by the J1-J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice with exchange energies J1=1.25+-0.5 K and J2=5.95+-0.2 K. The maximum of the specific heat Cv^{max}(T_{max}) is obtained as a function J2/J1 from an improved method based on HTE.
We study the phase diagram and the dynamical spin structure factor of the spin-1/2 J1-J3 Heisenberg model on the square lattice using density matrix renormalization group, exact diagonalization (ED), and cluster perturbation theory (CPT). By extrapolating the order parameters and studying the level crossings of the low-lying energy and entanglement spectra, we obtain the phase diagram of this model and identify a narrow region of quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase followed by a plaquette valence-bond solid (PVBS) state in the intermediate region, whose nature has been controversial for many years…
The ground state properties of random-exchange spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the square lattice are investigated using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, exact numerical diagonalizations, and spin wave calculations. Whereas arbirarily weak disorder has a drastic effect on 1d Heisenberg AFM, we find that in two dimensions the characteristics of the ground state like long-range order is robust even against strong disorder. While the antiferromagnetic order parameter and the spin stiffness are exponentially reduced for singular exchange distributions, they vanish only in …
Despite nearly a century of study of the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice, there is still disagreement on the nature of its high-energy excitations. By tuning toward the Heisenberg model from the exactly soluble Ising limit, we find that the strongly attractive magnon interactions of the latter naturally account for a number of spectral features of the Heisenberg model. This claim is backed up both numerically and analytically. Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we obtain the dynamical structure factor for a cylindrical geometry, allowing us to continuously co…
The coupled cluster method is applied to a spin-half model at zero temperature ($T=0$), which interpolates between Heisenberg antiferromagnets (HAF's) on a kagome and a square lattice. With respect to an underlying triangular lattice the strengths of the Heisenberg bonds joining the nearest-neighbor (NN) kagome sites are $J_{1} \geq 0$ along two of the equivalent directions and $J_{2} \geq 0$ along the third. Sites connected by $J_{2}$ bonds are themselves connected to the missing NN non-kagome sites of the triangular lattice by bonds of strength $J_{1}' \geq 0$. When $J_{1}'=J_{1}$ and $J_{2}…
We develop a simple and unbiased numerical method to obtain the uniform susceptibility of quantum many body systems. When a Hamiltonian is spatially deformed by multiplying it with a sine square function that smoothly decreases from the system center toward the edges, the size-scaling law of the excitation energy is drastically transformed to a rapidly converging one. Then, the local magnetization at the system center becomes nearly size independent; the one obtained for the deformed Hamiltonian of a system length as small as L=10 provides the value obtained for the original uniform Hamiltonia…
Recent numerical and analytical work has shown that for the square-lattice Heisenberg model the boundary can induce Dimer correlations near the edge which are absent in spin-wave theories and non-linear sigma model approaches. Here, we calculate the nearest-neighbor spin correlations parallel and perpendicular to the boundary in a semi-infinite system for two different square-lattice Heisenberg models: (i) A frustrated $J_1-J_2$ model with nearest and second neighbor couplings and (ii) a spatially anisotropic Heisenberg model, with nearest-neighbor couplings $J$ perpendicular to the boundary a…
Within the tensor network framework, the (positive) thermal density operator can be approximated by a double layer of infinite Projected Entangled Pair Operator (iPEPO) coupled via ancilla degrees of freedom. To investigate the thermal properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice, we introduce a family of fully spin-$SU(2)$ and lattice-$C_{4v}$ symmetric on-site tensors (of bond dimensions $D=4$ or $D=7$) and a plaquette-based Trotter-Suzuki decomposition of the imaginary-time evolution operator. A variational optimization is performed on the plaquettes, using a full (for …
We employ a variational Monte Carlo approach to efficiently obtain the dynamical structure factor for the spin-1/2 $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice. Upon increasing the frustrating ratio $J_2/J_1$, the ground state undergoes a continuous transition from a Néel antiferromagnet to a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ gapless spin liquid. We identify the characteristic spectral features in both phases and highlight the existence of a broad continuum of excitations in the proximity of the spin-liquid phase. The magnon branch, which dominates the spectrum of the unfrustrated Heisenberg model, gradual…
The thermodynamics of the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice is revisited through a linearized spin-wave theory which is well defined at any finite temperature. We re-examine in details the temperature dependence of the free energy, the internal energy, the entropy and the specific heat. Most conclusions of the thermodynamics in previous studies can be reproduced in our linearized spin-wave theory. Specially, our calculation at low temperature $T<J$ agrees quantitatively with the numerical Quantum Monte Carlo simulation and high temperature series expansions.
Magnetization plateaus in quantum spin systems emerges in two-dimensional frustrated systems such as kagome lattice. The spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on square-kagome lattice is also appropriate for the study of magnetization plateau. Motivated by recent experimental finding of such a square-kagome lattice with nonequivalent three bonds, we investigate the phase diagrams and magnetization plateaus of the lattice by the exact diagonalization method. In addition to previously reported the 1/3 and 2/3 plateaus in the model with two equivalent bonds, we find a new 2/3 plateau whose …
We investigate the ground-state magnetic order of the spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J1<0 and frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor exchange J2>0. We use the coupled-cluster method to high orders of approximation and Lanczos exact diagonalization of finite lattices of up to N=40 sites in order to calculate the ground-state energy, the spin-spin correlation functions, and the magnetic order parameter. We find that the transition point at which the ferromagnetic ground state disappears is given by J2^{c1}=0.393|J1|…
The S=1/2 and S=1 two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the anisotropic dimerized square lattice are investigated by the quantum Monte Carlo method. By finite-size-scaling analyses on the correlation lengths, the ground-state phase diagram parametrized by strengths of the dimerization and of the spatial anisotropy is determined much more accurately than the previous works. It is confirmed that the quantum critical phenomena on the phase boundaries belong to the same universality class as that of the classical three-dimensional Heisenberg model. Furthermore, for S=1, we show th…
We study the magnetic field dependence of the ground state of $S=1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice by the DMRG method with the sine-square deformation. We obtain 8 different phases including plaquette valence-bond crystal with a finite spin gap, transverse N$\acute{\rm e}$el, transverse stripe, 1/2 magnetization plateau with up-up-up-down (uuud), and three new phases we named Y-like, V-like, and $Ψ$ phases around $J_2/J_1$ =0.55-0.6 depending on the magnetic field. The phase transitions to uuud and Y-like states from transverse N$\acute{\rm e}$el (at $J_2/J_1$ = 0.55) and…
The magnetic structure of the double perovskite compound Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ was determined from neutron powder diffraction data. This material is magnetically described as an $S\,{=}\,1/2$ quasi-two-dimensional square-lattice Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions. Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ undergoes a magnetic phase transition at $T_{\rm N}\,{\simeq}\,29\,$ K. The spin structure below $T_{\rm N}$ is Néel antiferromagnetic on the square lattice, which means that the nearest-neighbor interaction ($J_1$) is stronger than the next-nearest-neighbor inter…
In a recent comments [arXiv:1909.12788 (2019)], Zhao et al. argue that the definition of dimer orders used in our paper [Phys. Rev. B 98, 241109 (2018)] may not rule out valence bond solid (VBS) orders of $J_1$-$J_2$ model on the open boundary conditions (OBC). In this reply, we show that their argument does not apply to our case.
We propose an efficient numerical method to obtain local order parameter in two-dimensional systems using spiral boundary conditions. As a benchmark, we first estimate the magnitude of staggered magnetization for the $S=1/2$ XXZ Heisenberg model on a square lattice in the whole range of the XXZ anisotropy by density-matrix renormalization group technique. The validity of our method is confirmed by comparing our results with the previous analytical and numerical studies. Then, as further demonstration, we apply our method to obtain the staggered magnetization for the higher-spin cases from $S=1…
We investigate the spin dynamics of the square-lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet by means of an improved mean field Schwinger boson calculation. By identifying both, the long range Néel and the RVB-like components of the ground state, we propose an educated guess for the mean field triplet excitation consisting on a linear combination of local and bond spin flips to compute the dynamical structure factor. Our main result is that when this triplet excitation is optimized in such a way that the corresponding sum rule is fulfilled, we recover the low and high energy spectral weight feat…
Using examples of the square- and triangular-lattice Heisenberg models we demonstrate that the density matrix renormalization group method (DMRG) can be effectively used to study magnetic ordering in two-dimensional lattice spin models. We show that local quantities in DMRG calculations, such as the on-site magnetization M, should be extrapolated with the truncation error, not with its square root, as previously assumed. We also introduce convenient sequences of clusters, using cylindrical boundary conditions and pinning magnetic fields, which provide for rapidly converging finite-size scaling…
We study the field dependence of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice by means of exact diagonalizations. In a first part, we calculate the spin-wave velocity, the spin-stiffness, and the magnetic susceptibility and thus determine the microscopic parameters of the low-energy long-wavelength description. In a second part, we present a comprehensive study of dynamical spin correlation functions for magnetic fields ranging from zero up to saturation. We find that at low fields, magnons are well defined in the whole Brillouin zone, but the dispersion is substantial…
We discuss spin-$\frac12$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on simple square lattice in magnetic field $H$ using recently proposed bond-operator technique. It is well known that magnetically ordered phases of quantum magnets are well described at least qualitatively by the conventional spin-wave theory that only introduces quantum corrections into the classical solution of the problem. We observe that quantum fluctuations change drastically dynamical properties of the considered model at $H$ close to its saturation value: the dynamical structure factor shows anomalies corresponding to Green's functio…
Using both exact diagonalizations and diagonalizations in a subset of short-range valence bond singlets, we address the nature of the groundstate of the Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnet on the square lattice with competing next-nearest and next-next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings (J1-J2-J3 model). A detailed comparison of the two approaches reveals a region along the line (J2+J3)/J1=1/2, where the description in terms of nearest-neighbor singlet coverings is excellent, therefore providing evidence for a magnetically disordered region. Furthermore a careful analysis of dimer-di…
A new density matrix renormalisation group (DMRG) approach is presented for quantum systems of two spatial dimensions. In particular, it is shown that it is possible to create a multi-chain-type 2D DMRG approach which utilises previously determined system and environment blocks {\it at all points}. One firstly builds up effective quasi-1D system and environment blocks of width $L$ and these quasi-1D blocks are then used to as the initial building-blocks of a new 2D infinite-lattice algorithm. This algorithm is found to be competitive with those results of previous 2D DMRG algorithms and also o…
We introduce a novel parametrization scheme for the Hilbert space of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet (AFM) based on an octapartite description of the square lattice. Our formulation provides an efficient yet systematic way to model the singlet ground-state wave function within a truncated basis. We demonstrate its effectiveness by using exact diagonalization to study systems with up to 64 spins. At significantly reduced computational cost, we obtain ground-state energies within less than 1% of the lowest values published. The non-iterative nature of this formulation and the fact that spa…
The spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on square lattices are investigated via the finite projected entangled pair states (PEPS) method. Using the recently developed gradient optimization method combining with Monte Carlo sampling techniques, we are able to obtain the ground states energies that are competitive to the best results. The calculations show that there is no Néel order, dimer order and plaquette order in the region of 0.42 $\lesssim J_2/J_1\lesssim$ 0.6, suggesting a single spin liquid phase in the intermediate region. Furthermore, the calculated staggered spin, dimer and plaque…
We report the magnetic susceptibility and the low-temperature specific heat of a double perovskite compound, Sr2CuTeO6, which is expected as the spin-1/2 square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with nearest-neighbor J1 and next-nearest-neighbor J2 exchange interactions. The specific heat exhibits a sharp lambda-like anomaly at TN = 4.8 K indicative of magnetic ordering, which is much lower than those in isostructural A2CuMO6 with A = Ba, Sr and M = W, Mo. This indicates the strong suppression of magnetic ordering in Sr2CuTeO6. We estimate the exchange constant J1/kB ~ 80 K and J2/J1 < 0.07 f…
In this study we calculate the dipole-coupling-induced quartic in-plane anisotropy of a square ferromagnetic Heisenberg monolayer. This anisotropy increases with an increasing temperature, reaching its maximum value close to the Curie temperature of the system. At T=0 the system is isotropic, besides a small remaining anisotropy due to the zero-point motion of quantum mechanical spins. The reason for the dipole-coupling-induced anisotropy is the disturbance of the square spin lattice due to thermal fluctuations ('order-by-disorder' effect). For usual ferromagnets its strength is small as compa…
Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ presents an opportunity for exploring low-dimensional magnetism on a square lattice of $S=1/2$ Cu$^{2+}$ ions. We employ ab initio multi-reference configuration interaction calculations to unravel the Cu$^{2+}$ electronic structure and to evaluate exchange interactions in Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$. The latter results are validated by inelastic neutron scattering using linear spin-wave theory and series-expansion corrections for quantum effects to extract true coupling parameters. Using this methodology, which is quite general, we demonstrate that Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ is an almost realization …
Magnetic phase diagram of a spatially anisotropic, frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a stacked square lattice is investigated using second-order spin-wave expansion. The effects of interlayer coupling and the spatial anisotropy on the magnetic ordering of two ordered ground states are explicitly studied. It is shown that with increase in next nearest neighbor frustration the second-order corrections play a significant role in stabilizing the magnetization. We obtain two ordered magnetic phases (Neel and stripe) separated by a paramagnetic disordered phase. Within second-order s…
We consider a family of SU(2)-symmetric Projected Entangled Paired States (PEPS) on the square lattice, defining colored-Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) states, to describe the quantum disordered phase of the $J_1-J_2$ frustrated Heisenberg model. For $J_2/J_1\sim 0.55$ we show the emergence of critical (algebraic) dimer-dimer correlations -- typical of Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) points of quantum dimer models on bipartite lattices -- while, simultaneously, the spin-spin correlation length remains short. Our findings are consistent with a spin liquid or a weak Valence Bond Crystal in the neighborhood …
