We present numerical results for an $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a inhomogeneous square lattice with tunable interaction between spins belonging to different plaquettes. Employing Quantum Monte Carlo, we significantly improve on previous results for the the critical point separating singlet-disordered and Néel-ordered phases, and obtain an estimate for the critical exponent $ν$ consistent with the three-dimensional classical Heisenberg universality class. Additionally, we show that a fairly accurate result for the critical point can be obtained from a Contractor Renormalization (CORE) expansion by applying a surprisingly simple analysis to the effective Hamiltonian.
A mixed Ising-Heisenberg spin system consisting of triangular XXZ-Heisenberg spin clusters assembled into a chain by alternating with Ising spins interacting to all three spins in the triangle is considered. The exact solution of the model is given in terms of the generalized decoration--iteration map and within the transfer-matrix technique. Exact expressions for thermodynamic functions are derived. Ground state phase diagrams, thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the system are examined.
A novel nonlinear sigma model method is proposed for the two-dimensional J1-J2 model, which is extended to include plaquette-type distortion. The nonlinear sigma model is properly derived without spoiling the original spin degrees of freedom. The method shows that a single disordered phase continuously extends from a frustrated uniform regime to an unfrustrated distorted regime. By the continuity and Oshikawa's commensurability condition, the disordered ground states for the uniform J1-J2 model are plaquette states with four-fold degeneracy.
We use fermion mean field theory to study possible plaquette ordering in the antiferromagnetic SU(4) Heisenberg model. We find the ground state for both the square and triangular lattices to be the disconnected plaquette state. Our mean field theory gives a first order transition for plaquette ordering for the triangular lattice. Our results suggest a large number of low lying states.
We investigate the non magnetic phase of the spin-half frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice using exact diagonalization (up to 36 sites) and quantum Monte Carlo techniques (up to 144 sites). The spin gap and the susceptibilities for the most important crystal symmetry breaking operators are computed. A genuine and somehow unexpected `plaquette RVB', with spontaneously broken translation symmetry and no broken rotation symmetry, comes out from our numerical simulations as the most plausible ground state for $J_2/J_1 \simeq 0.5 $.
Gapless edge states are the hallmark of a large class of topological states of matter. Recently, intensive research has been devoted to understanding the physical properties of the edge states at the quantum phase transitions of the bulk topological states. A higher-order symmetry-protected topological state is realized in a plaquette Heisenberg model on the square lattice. In its disordered phase, the lattice with an open boundary hosts either dangling corner states with spin-$1/2$ degeneracy characterizing the topological phase, or nondangling corner states without degeneracy, which depends …
Using both exact diagonalizations and diagonalizations in a subset of short-range valence bond singlets, we address the nature of the groundstate of the Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnet on the square lattice with competing next-nearest and next-next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings (J1-J2-J3 model). A detailed comparison of the two approaches reveals a region along the line (J2+J3)/J1=1/2, where the description in terms of nearest-neighbor singlet coverings is excellent, therefore providing evidence for a magnetically disordered region. Furthermore a careful analysis of dimer-di…
We apply the plaquette renormalization scheme of tensor network states [Phys. Rev. E, 83, 056703 (2011)] to study the spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg J1-J2 model on a L*L square lattice with L = 8, 16 and 32. By treating tensor elements as variational parameters, we obtain the ground states for different J2/J1 values, and investigate the staggered magnetic order parameters, the nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlations and the plaquette order parameters. In addition to the well-known Néel-order and collinear-order at low and high J2/J1, we observe a plaquette order at intermediate J2/J1. A contin…
We study S=1/2 Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with first and second neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange (J_{1}-J_{2} model), employing exact diagonalization in both S_z=0 basis and nearest neighbor singlet valence bond (NNVB) basis. We find that for 0.2<J_2/J_1<0.3, NNVB basis gives a proper description of the ground state in comparison with the exact results. By analyzing the dimer-dimer as well as plaquette-plaquette correlations and also defining appropriate structure factors, we investigate possible symmetry breaking states as the candidate for the ground state in the frustrated…
Aiming to describe frustrated quantum magnets with non-magnetic singlet ground states, we have extended the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) loop-expansion to derive a generalized Quantum Dimer Model containing only connected terms up to arbitrary order. For the square lattice frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet (J1-J2-J3 model), an expansion up to 8th order shows that the leading correction to the original RK model comes from dimer moves on length-6 loops. This model free of the original sign problem is treated by advanced numerical techniques. The results suggest that a rotationally anisotropic plaqu…
We extend the definition of the Jordan-Wigner transformation to three dimensions using the generalization of ideas that were used in the two-dimensional case by one of the present authors. Under this transformation, the 3D XY Hamiltonian is transformed into a system of spinless fermions coupled to a gauge field with only two components. We calculate the flux per plaquette for the 3 elementary perpendicular plaquettes of a cubic lattice, and find that it is nonzero for only two of the plaquettes. We provide a simple interpretation for the average phase-per-plaquette being $π$ on the plaquettes …
A number of topological nodes including Dirac, quadratic and triple band touching points as well as a pair of degenerate Dirac line nodes are found to emerge in the triplet plaquette excitations of the frustrated spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg honeycomb model when the ground state of the system lies in a spin-disordered plaquette-valence-bond-solid phase. A six-spin plaquette operator theory of this honeycomb model has been developed for this purpose by using the eigenstates of an isolated Heisenberg hexagonal plaquette. Spin-1/2 operators are thus expressed in the Fock spac…
We have precisely determined the ground state phase diagram of the quantum spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice using the tensor renormalization group method. We find that the ferromagnetic, ferroquadrupolar, and a large part of the antiferromagnetic phases are stable against quantum fluctuations. However, around the phase where the ground state is antiferroquadrupolar ordered in the classical limit, quantum fluctuations suppress completely all magnetic orders, leading to a plaquette order phase which breaks the lattice symmetry but preserves the spin SU(2) sym…
We study the properties of a mobile hole in the $t-J$ model on the square lattice by means of variational Monte Carlo simulations based on the entangled-plaquette ansatz. Our energy estimates for small lattices reproduce available exact results. We obtain values for the hole energy dispersion curve on large lattices in quantitative agreement with earlier findings based on the most reliable numerical techniques. Accurate estimates of the hole spectral weight are provided.
Using the density matrix renormalization group, we investigate the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with first- ($J_1$) and second-neighbor ($J_2$) interactions. We are able to study long open cylinders with widths up to 12 lattice spacings. For $J_2/J_1$ near 0.3, we find an apparently paramagnetic phase, bordered by an antiferromagnetic phase for $J_2\lesssim 0.26$ and by a valence bond crystal for $J_2\gtrsim 0.36$. The longest correlation length that we find in this intermediate phase is for plaquette valence bond (PVB) order. This correlation length grows strongly with cy…
We study, on the basis of the general entangled-plaquette variational ansatz, the ground-state properties of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. Our numerical estimates are in good agreement with available exact results and comparable, for large system sizes, to those computed via the best alternative numerical approaches, or by means of variational schemes based on specific (i.e., incorporating problem dependent terms) trial wave functions. The extrapolation to the thermodynamic limit of our results for lattices comprising up to N=324 spins yields an upp…
We use the stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo method to study the Heisenberg models on the square lattice with strong and weak couplings in the form of three different plaquette arrangements known as checkerboard models C$2\times2$, C$2\times4$ and C$4\times4$. The $a\times b$ here stands for the shape of plaquette consisting with spins connected by strong couplings. Through detailed analysis of finite-size scaling study, the critical point of C$2\times2$ model is improved as $g_{c}=0.548524(3)$ compared with previous studies with $g$ to be the ratio of weak and strong couplings i…
Ground-state properties of the spin-1 two-leg antiferromagnetic ladder are investigated precisely by means of the quantum Monte Carlo method. It is found that the correlation length along the chains and the spin gap both remain finite regardless of the strength of interchain coupling, i.e., the Haldane state and the spin-1 dimer state are connected smoothly without any quantum phase transitions between them. We propose a plaquette-singlet solid state, which qualitatively describes the ground state of the spin-1 ladder quite well, and also a corresponding topological hidden order parameter. It …
Conflicting predictions have been made for the ground state of the SU(3) Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice: Tensor network simulations found a plaquette order [Zhao et al, Phys. Rev. B 85, 134416 (2012)], where singlets are formed on hexagons, while linear flavor-wave theory (LFWT) suggested a dimerized, color ordered state [Lee and Yang, Phys. Rev. B 85, 100402 (2012)]. In this work we show that the former state is the true ground state by a systematic study with infinite projected-entangled pair states (iPEPS), for which the accuracy can be systematically controlled by the so-called …
Using the coupled cluster method for high orders of approximation and Lanczos exact diagonalization we study the ground-state phase diagram of a quantum spin-1/2 J1-J2 model on the square lattice with plaquette structure. We consider antiferromagnetic (J1>0) as well as ferromagnetic (J1<0) nearest-neighbor interactions together with frustrating antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction J2>0. The strength of inter-plaquette interaction lambda varies between lambda=1 (that corresponds to the uniform J1-J2 model) and lambda=0 (that corresponds to isolated frustrated 4-spin plaquettes). …
We study the quantum phase diagram and excitation spectrum of the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ spin-1/2 Heisenberg Hamiltonian. A hierarchical mean-field approach, at the heart of which lies the idea of identifying {\it relevant} degrees of freedom, is developed. Thus, by performing educated, manifestly symmetry preserving mean-field approximations, we unveil fundamental properties of the system. We then compare various coverings of the square lattice with plaquettes, dimers and other degrees of freedom, and show that only the {\it symmetric plaquette} covering, which reproduces the original Bravais…
We study the plaquette valence-bond solid phase of the spin-1/2 J_1-J_2 antiferromagnet Heisenberg model on the square lattice within the bond-operator theory. We start by considering four S = 1/2 spins on a single plaquette and determine the bond operator representation for the spin operators in terms of singlet, triplet, and quintet boson operators. The formalism is then applied to the J_1-J_2 model and an effective interacting boson model in terms of singlets and triplets is derived. The effective model is analyzed within the harmonic approximation and the previous results of Zhitomirsky an…
Recent experiments [J. Guo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett.124,206602 (2020)] on thermodynamic properties of the frustrated layered quantum magnet SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ -- the Shastry-Sutherland material -- have provided strong evidence for a low-temperature phase transition between plaquette-singlet and antiferromagnetic order as a function of pressure. Further motivated by the recently discovered unusual first-order quantum phase transition with an apparent emergent O(4) symmetry of the antiferromagnetic and plaquette-singlet order parameters in a two-dimensional "checkerboard J-Q" quantum spin model…
The phase diagram of the uniaxially anisotropic $s=1$ antiferromagnet on the kagomé lattice includes a critical line exactly described by the classical three-color model. This line is distinct from the standard geometric classical criticality that appears in the classical limit ($s \to \infty$) of the 2D XY model; the $s=1$ geometric T=0 critical line separates two unconventional plaquette-ordered phases that survive to nonzero temperature. The experimentally important correlations at finite temperature and the nature of the transitions into these ordered phases are obtained using the mapping …
We study two planar square lattice Heisenberg models with explicit dimerization or quadrumerization of the couplings in the form of ladder and plaquette arrangements. We investigate the quantum critical points of those models by means of (stochastic series expansion) quantum Monte Carlo simulations as a function of the coupling ratio $α= J^\prime/J$. The critical point of the order-disorder quantum phase transition in the ladder model is determined as $α_\mathrm{c} = 1.9096(2)$ improving on previous studies. For the plaquette model we obtain $α_\mathrm{c} = 1.8230(2)$ establishing a first benc…
We study the proposed plaquette-RVB (pRVB) state in the honeycomb lattice $J_1-J_2$ model with frustration arising from next-nearest neighbour interactions. Starting with the limit of decoupled hexagons, we develop a plaquette operator approach to describe the pRVB state and its low energy excitations. Our calculation clarifies that the putative pRVB state necessarily has f-wave symmetry - the plaquette wavefunction is an antisymmetric combination of the Kekulé structures. We estimate the plaquette ordering amplitude, ground state energy and spin gap as a function of $J_2/J_1$. The pRVB state …
We investigate low-energy properties of two-dimensional quantum spin systems with the ladder and plaquette structures, which are described by a generalized antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with both of the bond and spin alternations. By exploiting a non-linear $σ$ model technique and a modified spin wave approach, we evaluate the spin gap and the spontaneous magnetization to discuss the quantum phase transition between the ordered and disordered states. We argue how the spin-gapped phase is driven to the antiferromagnetic phase in the phase diagram.
We study the phase diagram and the dynamical spin structure factor of the spin-1/2 J1-J3 Heisenberg model on the square lattice using density matrix renormalization group, exact diagonalization (ED), and cluster perturbation theory (CPT). By extrapolating the order parameters and studying the level crossings of the low-lying energy and entanglement spectra, we obtain the phase diagram of this model and identify a narrow region of quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase followed by a plaquette valence-bond solid (PVBS) state in the intermediate region, whose nature has been controversial for many years…
The antiferromagnetic Ising model on a checkerboard lattice has an ice-like ground state manifold with extensive degeneracy. and, to leading order in J_xy, deconfined spinon excitations. We explore the role of cyclic exchange arising at order J^2_xy/J_z on the ice states and their associated spinon excitations. By mapping the original problem onto an equivalent quantum six--vertex model, we identify three different phases as a function of the chemical potential for flippable plaquettes - a phase with long range Neel order and confined spinon excitations, a non-magnetic state of resonating squa…
We show that the entangled-plaquette variational ansatz can be adapted to study the two-dimensional $t-J$ model in the presence of two mobile holes. Specifically, we focus on a square lattice comprising up to $N=256$ sites in the parameter range $0.4\leq J/ t\leq2.0$. Ground state energies are obtained via the optimization of a wave function in which the weight of a given configuration is expressed in terms of variational coefficients associated with square and linear entangled plaquettes. Our estimates are in excellent agreement with exact results available for the $N=16$ lattice. By extendin…
The energy spectrum of the two-magnon bound states in the Heisenberg-Ising antiferromagnet on the square lattice are calculated using series expansion methods. The results confirm an earlier spin-wave prediction of Oguchi and Ishikawa, that the bound states vanish into the continuum before the isotropic Heisenberg limit is reached.
Groundstate magnetism of the one-band Hubbard model on the frustrated square lattice where both nearest-neighbour $t_1$ and next-nearest-neighbour $t_2$ hoppings are considered at half-filling are revisited within mean field approximation. Two new magnetic phases are detected at intermediate strength of Hubbard $U$ and relative strong frustration of $t_2/t_1$, named double-stripe and plaquette antiferromagnetic states, both of which are metallic and stable even at finite temperature and electron doping. The nature of the phase transitions between different phases and the properties of the two …
The $S=1/2$ kagome- and triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets are investigated using the numerical exact diagonalization and the finite-size scaling analysis. The behaviour of the field derivative at zero magnetization is examined for both systems. The present result indicates that the spin excitation is gapless for each system.
Magnetic field induced multiple non-Dirac nodal-lines are found to emerge in the triplet dispersion bands of a frustrated spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic model on the CaVO lattice. Plaquette and bond operator formalisms have been employed to obtain the triplet plaquette and bond excitations for two different parameter regimes in the presence of nearest and next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interactions based on the plaquette-resonating-valence-bond and dimerized ground states, respectively. In the absence of magnetic field a pair of six-fold degenerate nodal-loops with distinct topological feature i…
We study the $S>1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the 1/5-depleted square lattice as a function of the ratio of the intra-plaquette coupling to the inter-plaquette coupling. Using stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we numerically identify three quantum phases, including the dimer phase, Néel phase and plaquette valence bond solid phase. We also obtain the accurate quantum critical points that belong to the O(3) universality class using the large-scale finite-size scaling. Most importantly, we study the dynamic spin structure factors of different phases, which…
We study the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice with first- and second-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions J1 and J2, which possesses a nonmagnetic region that has been debated for many years and might realize the interesting Z2 spin liquid. We use the density matrix renormalization group approach with explicit implementation of SU(2) spin rotation symmetry and study the model accurately on open cylinders with different boundary conditions. With increasing J2, we find a Neel phase, a plaquette valence-bond (PVB) phase with a finite spin gap, and a possible spin liquid in a sma…
Corrections to the asymptotic correlation function in a Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain are known to vanish slowly (logarithmically) as a function of the distance r or the chain size L. This leads to significant differences with numerical results. We calculate the sub-leading logarithmic corrections to the finite-size correlation function, using renormalization group improved perturbation theory, and compare the result with numerical data.
The spin half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Kagome lattice, is mapped by Contractor Renormalization to a Spin-Pseudospin Hamiltonian on the triangular superlattice. Variationally, we find a ground state with columnar dimer order. Dimer orientation fluctuations are described by an effective O(2) model at energies above an exponentially suppressed clock mass scale. Our results explain the large density of low energy singlets observed numerically, and the non magnetic T-squared specific heat observed experimentally.
Using an advanced Monte Carlo algorithm and high precision spin dynamics simulation, we investigated the dynamical behavior of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a kagome lattice at extremely low temperatures. We demonstrate that the detection and correct identification of propagating excitations depends crucially on the choice of coordinates and we show how modes are displaced in Fourier space if a single, global Cartesian coordinate system is chosen.
We introduce a quantum spin-1/2 model hosting two exact plaquette singlet ground states in extended parameter regimes. There is an exact phase transition between both phases, at which the system has an extensive ground-state degeneracy. Further, the model exhibits an extensive number of conserved quantities, which allow the prediction of additional phases. We exploit this feature and explore the phase diagram in detail for two specific parameter regimes. The model is based solely on Heisenberg interactions and seems sufficiently simple to be realized in quantum materials. A general scheme to d…
We study the low temperature dynamics of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet with nearest neighbour interactions on the pyrochlore lattice. We present extensive results for the wavevector and frequency dependence of the dynamical structure factor, obtained from simulations of the precessional dynamics. We also construct a solvable stochastic model for dynamics with conserved magnetisation, which accurately reproduces most features of the precessional results. Spin correlations relax at a rate independent of wavevector and proportional to temperature.
The effect of the quenched bond-randomness on the ordering of the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice is investigated by means of an exact-diagonalization method. When the randomness exceeds a critical value, the ground state of the model exhibits a transition within the non-magnetic state into the randomness-relevant gapless spin-liquid state. Implications to the S=1/2 kagome-lattice antiferromagnet herbertsmithite is discussed.
The ground state phase transition in the distorted S=1 kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHAF) is studied by means of the perturbational calculation and numerical exact diagonalization method. For strong $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ lattice distortion, the hexgonal singlet solid (HSS) ground state of the uniform KHAF is destroyed and new singlet state, large HSS (LHSS) state, which is globally different from the HSS state is realized. The quantum phase transition between these two singlet states is analogous to the Haldane-dimer transition in the S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. The pres…
The power of machine learning algorithms to automatically classify different phases of matter and detect quantum phase transitions without necessity to characterize phases by various quantities like local order parameters or topological invariants as in conventional approaches defined machine learning phases of matter as a new research frontier and basic research tool in condensed matter and statistical physics. We study quantum criticality in the spin-1/2 square-lattice J1-J2 model with additional plaquette structure by combination of reinforcement and supervised machine learning techniques. …
We study Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a diamond-like decorated square lattice perturbed by further neighbor couplings. The second-order effective Hamiltonian is calculated and the resultant Hamiltonian is found to be a square-lattice quantum-dimer model with a finite hopping amplitude and no repulsion, which suggests the stabilization of the plaquette phase. Our recipe for constructing quantum-dimer models can be adopted for other lattices and provides a route for the experimental realization of quantum-dimer models.
We discuss the ground state and the low-lying excitations of the spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the two-dimensional square-kagome lattice. This magnetic system belongs to the class of highly frustrated spin systems with an infinite non-trivial degeneracy of the classical ground state as it is known also for the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome and on the star lattice. The quantum ground state of the spin-half system is a quantum paramagnet likely with a finite spin gap and with a large number of non-magnetic excitations within this gap. The magnetization versus field curve sho…
The phase diagram of Kane-Mele-Heisenberg (KMH) model in classical limit~\cite{zare}, contains disordered regions in the coupling space, as the result of to competition among different terms in the Hamiltonian, leading to frustration in finding a unique ground state. In this work we explore the nature of these phase in the quantum limit, for a $S=1/2$. Employing exact diagonalization (ED) in $S_z$ and nearest neighbor valence bond (NNVB) bases, bond and plaquette valence bond mean field theories, We show that the disordered regions are divided into ordered quantum states in the form of plaquet…
We study antiferromagnetic, $S=1/2$ Heisenberg models with nearest and second neighbor interactions on the one-fifth depleted square lattice which describes the spin degrees of freedom in the spin-gap system CaV$_4$O$_9$. The meta-plaquette expansion for the triplet excitation spectrum is extended to fifth order, and the results are compared with experimental data on CaV$_4$O$_9$. We attempt to locate the phase boundary between magnetically ordered and gapped phases.
The spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on square lattices are investigated via the finite projected entangled pair states (PEPS) method. Using the recently developed gradient optimization method combining with Monte Carlo sampling techniques, we are able to obtain the ground states energies that are competitive to the best results. The calculations show that there is no Néel order, dimer order and plaquette order in the region of 0.42 $\lesssim J_2/J_1\lesssim$ 0.6, suggesting a single spin liquid phase in the intermediate region. Furthermore, the calculated staggered spin, dimer and plaque…
Ground state energies for plaquette and dimer order in the $J_1-J_2$ square-lattice spin-half Heisenberg model are compared using series expansion methods. We find that these energies are remarkably close to each other at intermediate values of $J_2/J_1$, where the model is believed to have a quantum disordered ground state. They join smoothly with those obtained from the Ising expansions for the 2-sublattice Néel-state at $J_2/J_1 \approx 0.4$, suggesting a second order transition from a Néel state to a quantum disordered state, whereas they cross the energy for the 4-sublattice ordered state…
I use an improved version of the two-step density matrix renormalization group method to study ground-state properties of the 2D Heisenberg model on the checkerboard lattice. In this version the Hamiltonian is projected on a tensor product of two-leg ladders instead of chains. This allows investigations of 2D isotropic models. I show that this method can describe both the magnetically disordered and ordered phases. The ground-state phases of the checkerboard model as $J_2$ increases are: (i) Néel with $Q=(π,π)$, (ii) a valence bond crystal (VBC) of plaquettes, (iii) Néel with $Q=(π/2,π)$, and …
The phase diagram of the XXZ spin-1 quantum magnet on the kagome lattice is studied for all cases where the $J_z$ coupling is antiferromagnetic. In the zero magnetic field case, the six previously introduced phases, found using various methods, are: the nondegenerate gapped photon phase which breaks no space symmetry or spin symmetry; the six-fold degenerate phase with plaquette order, which breaks both time reversal symmetry and translational symmetry; the "superfluid" (ferromagnetic) phase with an in-plane global U(1) symmetry broken, when $J_{xy} < 0$; the $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ order whe…
An extended Hubbard model (including nearest-neighbor repulsion and antiferromagnetic spin exchange) is investigated on the frustrated checkerboard lattice, a two-dimensional analog of the pyrochlore lattice. Combining Gutzwiller renormalized mean-field (MF) calculations, exact diagonalization (ED) techniques, and a weak-coupling renormalization group (RG) analysis we provide strong evidence for a crystalline valence bond plaquette phase at quarter-filling. The ground state is twofold degenerate and breaks translation symmetry. The bond energies show a staggering while the charge distribution …
We study the O(N) quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet using a parametrisation in terms of real fermions. The N->infinity limit of the model is controlled by a saddle point that is infinitely degenerate in many cases and which represents singlet states on dimers that cover the lattice. Our results are similar to results reported previously on an SU(N) generalisation of the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet for N->infinity.
