We study the applicability of the {\it parallel tempering method} (PT) in the investigation of first- order phase transitions. In this method, replicas of the same system are simulated simultaneously at different temperatures and the configurations of two randomly chosen replicas can occasionally be interchanged. We apply the PT for the Blume-Emery-Griffiths (BEG) model, which displays strong first-order transitions at low temperatures. A precise estimate of coexistence lines is obtained, revealing that the PT may be a successful tool for the characterization of discontinuous transitions.
Comparing different protocols of temperature selection in the parallel tempering method
There are 880 magic squares of size 4 by 4, and 275,305,224 of size 5 by 5. It seems very difficult if not impossible to count exactly the number of higher order magic squares. We propose a method to estimate these numbers by Monte Carlo simulating magic squares at finite temperature. One is led to perform low temperature simulations of a system with many ground states that are separated by energy barriers. The Parallel Tempering Monte Carlo method turns out to be of great help here. Our estimate for the number of 6 by 6 magic squares is 0.17745(16) times 10**20.
An efficient approach of measuring the absolute free energy in parallel tempering Monte Carlo using the exponential averaging method is discussed and the results are compared with those of population annealing Monte Carlo using the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass model as benchmark tests. Numerical results show that parallel tempering, even though uses a much less number of temperatures than population annealing, can nevertheless equally efficiently measure the absolute free energy by simulating each temperature for longer times.
An alternative to Monte Carlo techniques requiring large sampling times is presented here. Ideas from a genetic algorithm are used to select the best initial states from many independent, parallel Metropolis-Hastings iterations that are run on a single graphics processing unit. This algorithm represents the idealized limit of the parallel tempering method and, if the threads are selected perfectly, this algorithm converges without any Monte Carlo iterations--although some are required in practice. Models tested here (Ising, anti-ferromagnetic Kagome, and random-bond Ising) are sampled on a tim…
We present a study of the parallel tempering (replica exchange) Monte Carlo method, with special focus on the feedback-optimized parallel tempering algorithm, used for generating an optimal set of simulation temperatures. This method is applied to a lattice simulation of a homopolymer chain undergoing a coil-to-globule transition upon cooling. We select the optimal number of replicas for different chain lengths, N = 25, 50 and 75, using replica's round-trip time in temperature space, in order to determine energy, specific heat, and squared end-to-end distance of the hopolymer chain for the sel…
We study the first order phase transition of the fixed-connectivity triangulated surface model using the Parallel Tempering Monte Carlo (PTMC) technique on relatively large lattices. From the PTMC results, we find that the transition is considerably stronger than the reported ones predicted by the conventional Metropolis MC (MMC) technique and the flat histogram MC technique. We also confirm that the results of the PTMC on relatively smaller lattices are in good agreement with those known results. This implies that the PTMC is successfully used to simulate the first order phase transitions. Th…
The algorithm based on integration over Lefschetz thimbles is a promising method to resolve the sign problem for complex actions. However, this algorithm often meets a difficulty in actual Monte Carlo calculations because the configuration space is not easily explored due to the infinitely high potential barriers between different thimbles. In this paper, we propose to use the flow time of the antiholomorphic gradient flow as an auxiliary variable for the highly multimodal distribution. To illustrate this, we implement the parallel tempering method by taking the flow time as a tempering parame…
Simulated tempering (ST) has attracted a great deal of attention in the last years, due to its capability to allow systems with complex dynamics to escape from regions separated by large entropic barriers. However its performance is strongly dependent on basic ingredients, such as the choice of the set of temperatures and their associated weights. Since the weight evaluations are not trivial tasks, an alternative approximated approach was proposed by Park and Pande (Phys. Rev. E {\bf 76}, 016703 (2007)) to circumvent this difficulty. Here we present a detailed study about this procedure by com…

We have introduced a variational method to improve the computation of integrated correlation times in the Parallel Tempering Dynamics, obtaining a better estimate (a lower bound, at least) of the exponential correlation time. Using this determination of the correlation times, we revisited the problem of the characterization of the chaos in temperature in finite dimensional spin glasses by means of the study of correlations between different chaos indicators computed in the static and the correlation times of the Parallel Tempering dynamics. The sample-distribution of the characteristic time fo…
Parallel tempering Monte Carlo has proven to be an efficient method in optimization and sampling applications. Having an optimized temperature set enhances the efficiency of the algorithm through more-frequent replica visits to the temperature limits. The approaches for finding an optimal temperature set can be divided into two main categories. The methods of the first category distribute the replicas such that the swapping ratio between neighbouring replicas is constant and independent of the temperature values. The second-category techniques including the feedback-optimized method, on the ot…
In statistical physics, the efficiency of tempering approaches strongly depends on ingredients such as the number of replicas $R$, reliable determination of weight factors and the set of used temperatures, ${\mathcal T}_R = \{T_1, T_2, \ldots, T_R\}$. For the simulated tempering (SP) in particular -- useful due to its generality and conceptual simplicity -- the latter aspect (closely related to the actual $R$) may be a key issue in problems displaying metastability and trapping in certain regions of the phase space. To determine ${\mathcal T}_R$'s leading to accurate thermodynamics estimates a…
The computational study of conformational transitions in RNA and proteins with atomistic molecular dynamics often requires suitable enhanced sampling techniques. We here introduce a novel method where concurrent metadynamics are integrated in a Hamiltonian replica-exchange scheme. The ladder of replicas is built with different strength of the bias potential exploiting the tunability of well-tempered metadynamics. Using this method, free-energy barriers of individual collective variables are significantly reduced compared with simple force-field scaling. The introduced methodology is flexible a…
