We study the efficiency of parallel tempering Monte Carlo technique for calculating true ground states of the Edwards-Anderson spin glass model. Bimodal and Gaussian bond distributions were considered in two and three-dimensional lattices. By a systematic analysis we find a simple formula to estimate the values of the parameters needed in the algorithm to find the GS with a fixed average probability. We also study the performance of the algorithm for single samples, quantifying the difference between samples where the GS is hard, or easy, to find. The GS energies we obtain are in good agreement with the values found in the literature. Our results show that the performance of the parallel tempering technique is comparable to more powerful heuristics developed to find the ground state of Ising spin glass systems.
We calculate the joint min--max distribution and the Edwards-Anderson's order parameter for the circular model of $1 / f$-noise. Both quantities, as well as generalisations, are obtained exactly by combining the freezing-duality conjecture and Jack-polynomial techniques. Numerical checks come with significantly improved control of finite-size effects in the glassy phase, and the results convincingly validate the freezing-duality conjecture. Application to diffusive dynamics is discussed. We also provide a formula for the pre-factor ratio of the joint/marginal Carpentier-Le Doussal tail for min…
We numerically study the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson model with Gaussian couplings, focusing on the heterogeneities arising in its nonequilibrium dynamics. Results are analyzed in terms of the backbone picture, which links strong dynamical heterogeneities to spatial heterogeneities emerging from the correlation of local rigidity of the bond network. Different two-times quantities as the flipping time distribution and the correlation and response functions, are evaluated over the full system and over high- and low-rigidity regions. We find that the nonequilibrium dynamics of the model is…
In the literature the most frequently cited data are quite contradictory, and there is no consensus on the global minimum value of 2D Edwards-Anderson (2D EA) Ising model. By means of computer simulations, with the help of exact polynomial Schraudolph-Kamenetsky algorithm, we examined the global minimum depth in 2D EA-type models. We found a dependence of the global minimum depth on the dimension of the problem N and obtained its asymptotic value in the limit $N\to\infty$. We believe these evaluations can be further used for examining the behavior of 2D Bayesian models often used in machine le…
Comment on "Evidence of Non-Mean-Field-Like Low-Temperature Behavior in the Edwards-Anderson Spin-Glass Model"
Rev. Lett.
Comment on "Ultrametricity in the Edwards-Anderson Model"
The three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin-glass model present strong spatial heterogeneities well characterized by the so-called backbone, a magnetic structure that arises as a consequence of the properties of the ground state and the low-excitation levels of such a frustrated Ising system. Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations and finite size scaling, we study how these heterogeneities affect the phase transition of the model. Although, we do not detect any significant difference between the critical behavior displayed by the whole system and that observed inside and outside the backbone,…
An analytical application of Niedermayer's algorithm to the Edwards-Anderson model: analytical results for the multicritical point on the Nishimori line
It is proven that the ground state is unique in the Edwards-Anderson model for almost all continuous random exchange interactions, and any excited state with the overlap less than its maximal value has large energy in dimensions higher than two with probability one. Since the spin overlap is shown to be concentrated at its maximal value in the ground state, replica symmetry breaking does not occur in the Edwards-Anderson model near zero temperature.
We study spin glass behavior in a random Ising Coulomb antiferromagnet in two and three dimensions using Monte Carlo simulations. In two dimensions, we find a transition at zero temperature with critical exponents consistent with those of the Edwards Anderson model, though with large uncertainties. In three dimensions, evidence for a finite-temperature transition, as occurs in the Edwards-Anderson model, is rather weak. This may indicate that the sizes are too small to probe the asymptotic critical behavior, or possibly that the universality class is different from that of the Edwards-Anderson…
We consider a one-step replica symmetry breaking description of the Edwards-Anderson spin glass model in 2D. The ingredients of this description are a Kikuchi approximation to the free energy and a second-level statistical model built on the extremal points of the Kikuchi approximation, which are also fixed points of a Generalized Belief Propagation (GBP) scheme. We show that a generalized free energy can be constructed where these extremal points are exponentially weighted by their Kikuchi free energy and a Parisi parameter $y$, and that the Kikuchi approximation of this generalized free ener…
The statistical properties of infrequent particle displacements, greater than a certain distance, is known as jump dynamics in the context of structural glass formers. We generalize the concept of jump to the case of a spin glass, by dividing the system in small boxes, and considering infrequent cooperative spin flips in each box. Jumps defined this way share similarities with jumps in structural glasses. We perform numerical simulations for the 3D Edwards-Anderson model, and study how the properties of these jumps depend on the waiting time after a quench. Similar to the results for structura…

Isothermal simulational data for the 3D Edwards-Anderson spin glass are collected at several temperatures below $T_{\rm c}$ and, in analogy with a recent model of dense colloidal suspensions, interpreted in terms of clusters of contiguous spins overturned by quakes, non-equilibrium events linked to record sized energy fluctuations. We show numerically that, to a good approximation, these quakes are statistically independent and constitute a Poisson process whose average grows logarithmically in time. The overturned clusters are local projections on one of the two ground states of the model, and…
The existing investigations on the complexity are extended. In addition to the Edward-Anderson Parameter q_2 the fourth moment q_4 of the magnetizations m_i is included to the set of constrained variables and the constrained complexity is numerically determined. The maximum of the constrained complexity (representing the total complexity) sticks at the boundary for temperatures at and below a new critical temperature. This implies marginal stability. The temperature dependence of lowest value of the Gibbs potential consistent with all requirements is presented.
Percolation Thresholds of the Fortuin-Kasteleyn Cluster for a Potts Gauge Glass Model on Complex Networks: Analytical Results on the Nishimori Line
[Europhys. Lett.
We study the bimodal Edwards-Anderson spin glass comparing established methods, namely the multicanonical method, the $1/k$-ensemble and parallel tempering, to an approach where the ensemble is modified by simulating power-law-shaped histograms in energy instead of flat histograms as in the standard multicanonical case. We show that by this modification a significant speed-up in terms of mean round-trip times can be achieved for all lattice sizes taken into consideration.
Population annealing is an easily parallelizable sequential Monte Carlo algorithm that is well-suited for simulating the equilibrium properties of systems with rough free energy landscapes. In this work we seek to understand and improve the performance of population annealing. We derive several useful relations between quantities that describe the performance of population annealing and use these relations to suggest methods to optimize the algorithm. These optimization methods were tested by performing large-scale simulations of the 3D Edwards-Anderson (Ising) spin glass and measuring several…
