We present a numerical study of fractional quantum Hall liquid at Landau level filling factor $ν=2/3$ in a microscopic model including long-range Coulomb interaction and edge confining potential, based on the disc geometry. We find the ground state is accurately described by the particle-hole conjugate of a $ν=1/3$ Laughlin state. We also find there are two counter-propagating edge modes, and the velocity of the forward-propagating mode is larger than the backward-propagating mode. The velocities have opposite responses to the change of the background confinement potential. On the other hand changing the two-body Coulomb potential has qualitatively the same effect on the velocities; for example we find increasing layer thickness (which softens of the Coulomb interaction) reduces both the forward mode and the backward mode velocities.
We report anomalous behavior in a double-layer two dimensional hole gas (2DHG) at even integer filling factors which includes hysteresis in the longitudinal and Hall resistances and a very weak temperature dependence of the resistance minima. All anomalies disappear and the conventional quantum Hall effect behavior recovers when a thin metal film is placed on top of the 2DHG. The behavior is attributed to presence of the theoretically predicted magnetic ordering at even integer filling factors which causes the formation of macroscopic spin-charge domains.
Within the newly formulated composite fermion hierarchy the filling fraction of a spherical quantum Hall system is obtained when it can be expressed as an odd or even denominator fraction. A plot of $ν\frac{2S}{N-1}$ as a function of $2S$ for a constant number of particles (up to N=10001) exhibits structure of the fractional quantum Hall effect. It is confirmed that $ν_e +ν_h=1$ for all particle-hole conjugate systems, except systems with $N_e =N_h$, and $N_e=N_h \pm 1$.
We report low temperature electronic transport results on the fractional quantum Hall effect of composite fermions at Landau level filling nu = 4/11 in a very high mobility and low density sample. Measurements were carried out at temperatures down to 15mK, where an activated magnetoresistance Rxx and a quantized Hall resistance Rxy, within 1% of the expected value of h/(4/11)e^2, were observed. The temperature dependence of the Rxx minimum at 4/11 yields an activation energy gap of ~ 7 mK. Developing Hall plateaus were also observed at the neighboring states at nu = 3/8 and 5/13.
A low energy action for double-layer quantum Hall systems at filling fractions $ν= 2/m$ ($m$ an odd integer) is introduced. Interlayer antiferromagnetic exchange induces a phase with canted spin order, and also a spin-singlet phase. Universal properties of zero and finite temperature transitions are obtained. We compute the critical temperature at which the canted order vanishes in a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Implications for recent light scattering experiments at $ν= 2$ are noted.
Magneto-transport measurements in a clean two-dimensional electron system confined to a wide GaAs quantum well reveal that, when the electrons occupy two electric subbands, the sequences of fractional quantum Hall states observed at high fillings ($ν> 2$) are distinctly different from those of a single-subband system. Notably, when the Fermi energy lies in the ground state Landau level of either of the subbands, no quantum Hall states are seen at the even-denominator $ν$ = 5/2 and 7/2 fillings; instead the observed states are at $ν= (i + p/(2p \pm 1))$ where $i$ = 2, 3, and $p$ = 1, 2, 3, and …
At low Landau level filling of a two-dimensional electron system, typically associated with the formation of an electron crystal, we observe local minima in Rxx at filling factors nu=2/11, 3/17, 3/19, 2/13, 1/7, 2/15, 2/17, and 1/9. Each of these developing fractional quantum Hall (FQHE) states appears only above a filling factor-specific temperature. This can be interpreted as the melting of an electron crystal and subsequent FQHE liquid formation. The observed sequence of FQHE states follow the series of composite fermion states emanating from nu=1/6 and nu=1/8.
We present an effective Hamiltonian for a bilayer quantum Hall system at filling factor $ν=1$ neglecting charge fluctuations. Our model is formulated in terms of spin and pseudospin operators and is an exact representation of the system within the above approximation. We analyze its low-lying excitations in terms of spin-wave theory. Moreover we add to previous first-principle exact-diagonalization studies concentrating on the quantum phase transition seen in this system.
We report simultaneous transport and scanning microwave impedance microscopy to examine the correlation between transport quantization and filling of the bulk Landau levels in the quantum Hall regime in gated graphene devices. Surprisingly, a comparison of these measurements reveals that quantized transport typically occurs below the complete filling of bulk Landau levels, when the bulk is still conductive. This result points to a revised understanding of transport quantization when carriers are accumulated by gating. We discuss the implications on transport study of the quantum Hall effect in…
We use a Mach-Zehnder quantum Hall interferometer of a novel design to investigate the interference effects at fractional filling factors. Our device brings together the advantages of usual Mach-Zehnder and Fabry-Perot quantum Hall interferometers. It realizes the simplest-for-analysis Mach-Zehnder interference scheme, free from Coulomb blockade effects. By contrast to the standard Mach-Zehnder realization, our device does not contain an etched region inside the interference loop. For the first time for Mach-Zehnder interference scheme, the device demonstrates interference oscillations with $Φ…
We discuss the Berry curvature calculations of the Hall viscosity for the unprojected to the lowest Landau level wave function of the Fermi-liquid-like state. We conclude, within assumptions made, that in the linear response, with small deformation of the system and in the thermodynamic limit, the Hall viscosity takes the value characteristic for the Laughlin states. We present arguments that the value is the same even for general deformations in the same limit.
Opposite spin Landau levels in a quantum well can be brought into coincidence by tilting the magnetic field away from normal orientation. We demonstrate that the magnetotransport anomaly at integer filling factors that was recently discovered by Pan {\it et al} is due to such a coincidence. By performing exact diagonalization calculations using microscopically evaluated effective electron-electron interactions, we are able to establish that the electronic ground state at coincidence is an Ising quantum Hall ferromagnet and that the low energy excitations correspond to the formation of a domain…
We report on the observation of a new spin mode in a quantum Hall system in the vicinity of odd electron filling factors under experimental conditions excluding the possibility of Skyrmion excitations. The new mode having presumably zero energy at odd filling factors emerges at small deviations from odd filling factors and couples to the spin-exciton. The existence of an extra spin mode assumes a nontrivial magnetic order at partial fillings of Landau levels surrounding quantum Hall ferromagnets other then the Skyrmion crystal.
We report ultra-low temperature experiments on the obscure fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at Landau level filling factor $ν$=5/2 in a very high mobility specimen of $μ=1.7 \times 10^7$ cm$^2$/Vs. We achieve an electron temperature as low as $\sim$ 4~mK, where we observe vanishing $R_{xx}$ and, for the first time, a quantized Hall resistance, $R_{xy}=h/(5/2e^2)$ to within 2 ppm. $R_{xy}$ at the neighboring odd-denominator states $ν$=7/3 and 8/3 is also quantized. The temperature dependences of the $R_{xx}$-minima at these fractional fillings yield activation energy gaps $Δ_{5/2}$=0.11K, …
The residual interaction between composite fermions (CFs) can express itself through higher order fractional Hall effect. With the help of diagonalization in a truncated composite fermion basis of low-energy many-body states, we predict that quantum Hall effect with partial spin polarization is possible at several fractions between $ν=1/3$ and $ν=2/5$. The estimated excitation gaps are approximately two orders of magnitude smaller than the gap at $ν=1/3$, confirming that the inter-CF interaction is extremely weak in higher CF levels.
We present an exact diagonalisation study of bilayer quantum Hall systems at a filling factor of two in the spherical geometry. We find the high-Zeeman-coupling phase boundary of the broken symmetry canted antiferromagnet is given exactly by previous Hartree-Fock mean-field theories, but that the state's stability at weak Zeeman coupling has been qualitatively overestimated. In the absence of interlayer tunneling, degeneracies occur between total spin multiplets due to the Hamiltonian's invariance under independent spin-rotations in top and bottom two-dimensional electron layers.
We report systematic quantum Hall transport experiments on Fabry-Perot electron interferometers at ultra-low-temperatures. The GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure devices consist of two constrictions defined by etch trenches in 2D electron layer, enclosing an approximately circular island. Front gates deposited in etch trenches allow to fine-tune the device for symmetry and to change the constriction filling, relative to the bulk. The low-field longitudinal and Hall magnetotransport shows Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and integer quantum Hall plateaus. A systematic variation of front-gate voltage aff…
We consider the edge of a two-dimensional electron system that is in the quantum-Hall-effect regime at filling factor 1-1/m with m being an odd integer, where microscopic theory explaining the occurrence of the quantum Hall effect in the bulk predicts the existence of two counterpropagating edge-excitation modes. These two modes are the classical edge-magnetoplasmon mode and a slow-moving neutral mode. Assuming the electrons to be confined by a coplanar neutralizing background of positive charges, and taking careful account of long-range Coulomb interactions, we determine microscopically the v…
We find that the nuclear-spin polarization has not been treated correctly. The references given are those of wrong papers. The credits assigned for discoveries are also not correct. Incorrect theories have been cited. The reference to the correct theory has been neglected. Because there are lots of good people, so they do not want to give reference to my papers even though they have not solved the problem of quantum Hall effect and we have.
Fractional quantum Hall states at half-integer filling factors have been observed in many systems beyond the $5/2$ and $7/2$ plateaus in GaAs quantum wells. This includes bilayer states in GaAs, several half-integer plateaus in ZnO-based heterostructures, and quantum Hall liquids in graphene. In all cases, Cooper pairing of composite fermions is believed to explain the plateaus. The nature of Cooper pairing and the topological order on those plateaus are hotly debated. Different orders are believed to be present in different systems. This makes it important to understand experimental signature…
In a recent paper [B. A. Piot et al., Phys. Rev. B 72, 245325 (2005)], we have shown that the lifting of the electron spin degeneracy in the integer quantum Hall effect at high filling factors should be interpreted as a magnetic-field-induced Stoner transition. In this work, we extend the analysis to investigate the influence of the single-particle Zeeman energy on the quantum Hall ferromagnet at high filling factors. The single-particle Zeeman energy is tuned through the application of an additional in-plane magnetic field. Both the evolution of the spin polarization of the system and the cri…
Recent theories suggest that the excitations of certain quantum Hall states may have exotic braiding statistics which could be used to build topological quantum gates. This has prompted an experimental push to study such states using confined geometries where the statistics can be tested. We study the transport properties of quantum point contacts (QPCs) fabricated on a GaAs/AlGaAs two dimensional electron gas that exhibits well-developed fractional quantum Hall effect, including at bulk filling fraction 5/2. We find that a plateau at effective QPC filling factor 5/2 is identifiable in point c…
Composite fermions in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems are believed to form a Fermi sea of weakly interacting particles at half filling $ν=1/2$. Recently, it was proposed (D. T. Son, Phys. Rev. X 5, 031027 (2015)) that these composite fermions are Dirac particles. In our work, we demonstrate experimentally that composite fermions found in monolayer graphene are Dirac particles at half filling. Our experiments have addressed FQH states in high-mobility, suspended graphene Corbino disks in the vicinity of $ν=1/2$. We find strong temperature dependence of conductivity $σ$ away from half fill…
We experimentally investigate transport across the incompressible stripe at the sample edge in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime at bulk filling factors $ν=2/3$ and $ν=2/5$. We obtain the dependence of the equilibration length, that is a phenomenological characteristics of the transport, on the voltage imbalance and the temperature, at high voltage imbalances. These dependencies are found to be of the power-law form, which is a strong evidence for the Luttigger liquid density of states.
The phenomenon of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) was first experimentally observed 33 years ago. FQHE involves strong Coulomb interactions and correlations among the electrons, which leads to quasiparticles with fractional elementary charge. Three decades later, the field of FQHE is still active with new discoveries and new technical developments. A significant portion of attention in FQHE has been dedicated to filling factor 5/2 state, for its unusual even denominator and possible application in topological quantum computation. Traditionally FQHE has been observed in high mobility GaAs…
We investigate the effect of the filling factor on transport anisotropies, known as stripes, in high Landau levels of a two-dimensional electron gas. We find that at certain in-plane magnetic fields, the stripes orientation is sensitive to the filling factor within a given Landau level. This sensitivity gives rise to the emergence of stripes away from half-filling while an orthogonally-oriented, native stripes reside at half-filling. This switching of the anisotropy axes within a single Landau level can be attributed to a strong dependence of the native symmetry breaking potential on the filli…
Bosons in the lowest Landau level, such as rapidly-rotating cold trapped atoms, are investigated numerically in the specially interesting case in which the filling factor (ratio of particle number to vortex number) is 3/2. When a moderate amount of a longer-range (e.g. dipolar) interaction is included, we find clear evidence that the ground state is in a phase constructed earlier by two of us, in which excitations possess non-Abelian statistics.
Transport experiments in high mobility (110) GaAs heterostructures have been performed at very low temperatures 8 mK. At higher Landau-Levels we observe a transport anisotropy that bears some similarity with what is already seen at half-odd-integer filling on (001) oriented substrates. In addition we report the first observation of transport anisotropies within the lowest Landau-Level. This remarkable new anisotropy is independent of the current direction and depends on the polarity of the magnetic field.
The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time T1 of the nu = 2 quantum Hall ferromagnet (QHF) formed in a gate-controlled InSb two-dimensional electron gas has been characterized using a pump-probe technique. In contrast to a long T1 of quantum Hall states around nu = 1 that possesses a Korringa-type temperature dependence, the temperature-independent short T1 of the nu = 2 QHF suggests the presence of low energy collective spin excitations in a domain wall. Furthermore, T1 of this ferromagnetic state is also found to be filling- and current-independent. The interpretation of these results as compa…
A theory of electronic properties of a spin-singlet quantum Hall droplet at filling factor $ν=2$ in a parabolic quantum dot is developed. The excitation spectrum and the stability of the droplet due to the transfer of electrons into the second Landau level at low magnetic fields and due to spin flip at the edge at higher magnetic fields is determined using Hartree-Fock, exact diagonalisation, and spin-density functional methods. We show that above a critical number of electrons $N_c$ the unpolarised $ν=2$ quantum Hall droplet ceases to be a ground state in favor of spin-polarised phases. We de…
We present a microscopic model for a line junction formed by counter or co-propagating single mode quantum Hall edges corresponding to different filling factors. The ends of the line junction can be described by two possible current splitting matrices which are dictated by the conditions of both lack of dissipation and the existence of a linear relation between the bosonic fields. Tunneling between the two edges of the line junction then leads to a microscopic understanding of a phenomenological description of line junctions introduced some time ago. The effect of density-density interactions …
We apply the magneto-roton theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect to study the collective excitation spectrum of rotating dipolar Fermi gases. The predicted spectrum has a finite energy gap in the long wavelength limit and a roton minimum at finite wave vector. The roton minimum being deepened from filling factor 1/3 to filling factor 1/5 is a signature of incipient crystallization near filling factor 1/7. We also demonstrate that there are no low-lying single-particle excitations below the roton mode. The fractional-quantum-Hall fluid rotating dipolar fermions behaves as an incompressib…
Liquid crystalline phases of matter permeate nature and technology, with examples ranging from cell membranes to liquid-crystal displays. Remarkably, electronic liquid crystal phases can exist in two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) at half Landau level filling in the quantum Hall regime. Theory has predicted the existence of a liquid crystal smectic phase that breaks both rotational and translational symmetries. However, previous experiments in 2DES are most consistent with an anisotropic nematic phase breaking only rotational symmetry. Here we report three transport phenomena at half-fill…
By allowing the spin degrees of freedom, we present a generalized spin allowed $U(1)\times U(1)$ Chern-Simons theory of fractional quantum Hall effects for odd and even denominator filling factors in single layers. This theory is shown to reproduce all possible odd denominator filling factors corresponding to spin-unpolarized, partially polarized, and fully polarized fractional quantum Hall states. Closely following our earlier theory, we derive the formal expressions of electromagnetic polarization tensors and Hall conductivity for the spin-unpolarized and partially polarized fractional quant…
Optical absorption measurements are used to probe the spin polarization in the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect regimes. The system is fully spin polarized only at filling factor $ν=1$ and at very low temperatures($\sim40$ mK). A small change in filling factor ($δν\approx\pm0.01$) leads to a significant depolarization. This suggests that the itinerant quantum Hall ferromagnet at $ν=1$ is surprisingly fragile against increasing temperature, or against small changes in filling factor.
We study the linear thermoelectric response of a quantum dot embedded in a constriction of a quantum Hall bar with fractional filling factors nu=1/m within Laughlin series. We calculate the figure of merit ZT for the maximum efficiency at a fixed temperature difference. We find a significant enhancement of this quantity in the fractional filling in relation to the integer-filling case, which is a direct consequence of the fractionalization of the electron in the fractional quantum Hall state. We present simple theoretical expressions for the Onsager coefficients at low temperatures, which expl…
We study the problem of resonant tunneling between a Fermi liquid and the edge of a $ν=1/3$ fractional quantum Hall state. In the limit of weak coupling, the system is adequately described within the sequential tunneling approximation. At low temperatures, however, the system crosses over to a strong coupling phase, which we analyze using renormalization group techniques. We find that at low temperatures a "perfect" can be achieved by tuning two parameters. This resonance has a peak conductance $G = e^2/2h$ and is a realization of the weak backscattering limit of the $g=1/2$ Luttinger liquid, …
An inaccuracy of composite fermion model is identified for Landau level fillings out of 1/p, p odd. The corrected version of hierarchy for fractional quantum Hall effect is proposed by mapping onto integer effect within the cyclotron braid approach. Flux-tubes and vortices for composite fermion constructions are explained in terms of cyclotron braids. The even denominator fractional lowest Landau level fillings, including Hall metal, are also discussed in cyclotron braid terms.
We report on our accurate evaluation of spin polarizations of the ground state and particle-hole gaps for partially-filled lowest Landau level, observed in recent experiments on graphene subjected to ultra-high magnetic fields. We find that inter-electron interactions are important at these filling factors, characterized by the non-degenerate ground states and large particle-hole gaps at infinitely large wave vectors. The gaps are the largest for the quantum Hall states in the second Landau level. The weak appearance of quantum Hall plateaus in the experiments for certain filling factors in th…
We study anisotropic stripe models of interacting electrons in the presence of magnetic fields in the quantum Hall regime with integer and fractional filling factors. The model consists of an infinite strip of finite width that contains periodically arranged stripes (forming supercells) to which the electrons are confined and between which they can hop with associated magnetic phases. The interacting electron system within the one-dimensional stripes are described by Luttinger liquids and shown to give rise to charge and spin density waves that lead to periodic structures within the stripe wit…
We construct high-quality graphene-based van der Waals devices with narrow superconducting niobium nitride (NbN) electrodes, in which superconductivity and robust fqH coexist. We find crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) across the superconductor separating two fqH edges. Our observed CAR probabilities in the particle-like fractional fillings are markedly higher than those in the integer and hole-conjugate fractional fillings and depend strongly on temperature and magnetic field unlike the other fillings. Further, we find a filling-independent CAR probability in integer fillings, which we attribut…
We have studied the collective excitation of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in the rotating Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) using CF theory at the filling fraction $ν=1/2$. The roton type of excitation in the FQHE of electron system is established over the years for all the filling fraction, whereas the collective excitation at $ν=1/2$ filling fraction in the rotating BEC shows no roton minimum. We have investigated this using composite fermion theory with the P$\ddot{o}$schl-Teller interaction potential between the particles. We have seen that the long range interaction will give the ro…
The integer quantum Hall (QH) effects characterized by topologically quantized and nondissipative transport are caused by an electrically insulating incompressible phase that prevents backscattering between chiral metallic channels. We probed the incompressible area susceptible to the breakdown of topological protection using a scanning gate technique incorporating nonequilibrium transport. The obtained pattern revealed the filling-factor ($ν$)-dependent evolution of the microscopic incompressible structures located along the edge and in the bulk region. We found that these specific structures…
What is the fate of the ground state of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at very low Landau level filling factors ($ν$) where interaction reigns supreme? An ordered array of electrons, the so-called Wigner crystal, has long been believed to be the answer. It was in fact the search for the elusive Wigner crystal that led to the discovery of an unexpected, incompressible liquid state, namely the fractional quantum Hall state at $ν=1/3$. Understanding the competition between the liquid and solid ground states has since remained an active field of fundamental research. Here we report exper…
We show that a Hopf term exists in the effective action of long-wavelength skyrmions in quantum Hall systems for both odd integer and fractional filling factors $ν= 1/(2s +1)$, where $s$ is an integer. We evaluate the prefactor of the Hopf term using Green function method in the limit of strong external magnetic field using model of local interaction. The prefactor ($N$) of the Hopf term is found to be equal to $ν$. The spin and charge densities and hence the total spin and charge of the skyrmion are computed from the effective action. The total spin is found to have a dominant contribution fr…

We study the charged excitations of quantum Hall systems at integer filling fractions $ν=2n+1$, for a force-law that takes account of the finite width of the electron gas. For typical values of this width, in the limit of vanishing Zeeman energy we find that the low-energy excitations are ``skyrmions'' not only at $ν=1$ but also at higher filling fractions. Our results lead to the prediction that, in typical samples, abrupt transitions to charged excitations with very large spins should be observable at filling fractions higher than $ν=1$ if the Zeeman energy is reduced sufficiently.
Statistics of level spacing and magnetization are studied for the phase diagram of the integer quantum Hall effect in a 2D finite lattice model with Anderson disorder.
We report the observation of developing fractional quantum Hall states at Landau level filling factors $ν= 1/2$ and 1/4 in electron systems confined to wide GaAs quantum wells with significantly $asymmetric$ charge distributions. The very large electric subband separation and the highly asymmetric charge distribution at which we observe these quantum Hall states, together with the fact that they disappear when the charge distribution is made symmetric, suggest that these are one-component states, possibly described by the Moore-Read Pfaffian wavefunction.
We apply polarization resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy to measure the spin polarization of a two dimensional electron gas in perpendicular magnetic field. In the vicinity of filling factor nu=5/2, we observe a sharp discontinuity in the energy of the zero Landau level emission line. We find that the splitting between the two circular polarizations exhibits a sharp drop at nu=5/2 and is equal to the bare Zeeman energy, which resembles the behavior at even filling factors. We show that this behavior is consistent with filling factor nu=5/2 being unpolarized.
In a fluid subject to a magnetic field the viscous stress tensor has a dissipationless antisymmetric component controlled by the so-called Hall viscosity. We here propose an all-electrical scheme that allows a determination of the Hall viscosity of a two-dimensional electron liquid in a solid-state device.
We apply the methods of continuum mechanics to the study of the collective modes of the fractional quantum Hall liquid. Our main result is that at long wavelength there are {\it two} distinct modes of oscillations, while previous theories predicted only {\it one}. The two modes are shown to arise from the internal dynamics of shear stresses created by the Coulomb interaction in the liquid. Our prediction is supported by recent light scattering experiments, which report the observation of two long-wavelength modes in a quantum Hall liquid.
An apparent h/fe Aharonov-Bohm flux period, where f is an integer, has been reported in coherent quantum Hall devices. Such sub-period is not expected for non-interacting electrons and thus is thought to result from interelectron Coulomb interaction. Here we report experiments in a Fabry-Perot interferometer comprised of two wide constrictions enclosing an electron island. By carefully tuning the constriction front gates, we find a regime where interference oscillations with period h/2e persist throughout the transition between the integer quantum Hall plateaus 2 and 3, including half-filling.…
We study theoretically the dispersion of a single quasiparticle or quasihole of the fractional quantum Hall effect, obtained by injecting or removing a composite fermion. By comparing to a free fermion system, we estimate the regime of validity of the Landau-Fermi-liquid-type description and deduce the Landau mass.
We present comprehensive results on the edge-mode velocities in a quantum Hall droplet with realistic interaction and confinement at various filling fractions. We demonstrate that the charge-mode velocity scales roughly with the valence Landau level filling fraction and the Coulomb energy in the corresponding Landau level. At Landau level filling fraction nu = 5/2, the stark difference between the bosonic charge-mode velocity and the fermionic neutral-mode velocity can manifest itself in the thermal smearing of the non-Abelian quasiparticle interference. We estimate the dependence of the coher…
Using Subsurface Charge Accumulation scanning microscopy we image strips of low compressibility corresponding to several integer Quantum Hall filling factors. We study in detail the strips at Landau level filling factors $ν=$ 2 and 4. The observed strips appear significantly wider than predicted by theory. We present a model accounting for the discrepancy by considering a disorder-induced nonzero density of states in the cyclotron gap.
Quasielectrons and quasiholes in the fractional quantum Hall liquids obey fractional (including nontrivial mutual) exclusion statistics. Their statistics matrix can be determined from several possible state-counting scheme, involving different assumptions on statistical correlations. Thermal activation of quasiparticle pairs and thermodynamic properties of the fractional quantum Hall liquids near fillings $1/m$ ($m$ odd) at low temperature are studied in the approximation of generalized ideal gas. The existence of hierarchical states in the fractional quantum Hall effect is shown to be a manif…
