Magneto-transport measurements in a clean two-dimensional electron system confined to a wide GaAs quantum well reveal that, when the electrons occupy two electric subbands, the sequences of fractional quantum Hall states observed at high fillings ($ν> 2$) are distinctly different from those of a single-subband system. Notably, when the Fermi energy lies in the ground state Landau level of either of the subbands, no quantum Hall states are seen at the even-denominator $ν$ = 5/2 and 7/2 fillings; instead the observed states are at $ν= (i + p/(2p \pm 1))$ where $i$ = 2, 3, and $p$ = 1, 2, 3, and include several new states at $ν$ = 13/5, 17/5, 18/5, and 25/7.
The low-temperature magnetoresistance of parabolic quantum wells displays pronounced minima between integer filling factors. Concomitantly the Hall effect exhibits overshoots and plateau-like features next to well-defined ordinary quantum Hall plateaus. These effects set in with the occupation of the second subband. We discuss our observations in the context of single-particle Landau fan charts of a two-subband system empirically extended by a density dependent subband separation and an enhanced spin-splitting g*.
The evolution of the fractional quantum Hall state at filling 5/2 is studied in density tunable two-dimensional electron systems formed in wide wells in which it is possible to induce a transition from single to two subband occupancy. In 80 and 60 nm wells, the quantum Hall state at 5/2 filling of the lowest subband is observed even when the second subband is occupied. In a 50 nm well the 5/2 state vanishes upon second subband population. We attribute this distinct behavior to the width dependence of the capacitive energy for intersubband charge transfer and of the overlap of the subband proba…
In a GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron system with two occupied subbands, the experimentally determined phase diagram in the density-magnetic field plane exhibits rich topological features. Ring-like structures are observed at even integer filling factors, in the phase diagram. Even with the identical quantized Hall resistance values as those given rise by the ordinary integer quantum Hall effect due to the Landau level quantization; the activation energies of these states within the rings are much smaller. These ring structures cannot account for by the simple single particle picture. We a…
We report the evolution of the fractional quantum Hall state (FQHS) at even-denominator filling factor $ν=7/2$ in wide GaAs quantum wells in which electrons occupy two electric subbands. The data reveal subtle and distinct evolutions as a function of density, magnetic field tilt-angle, or symmetry of the charge distribution. When the charge distribution is strongly asymmetric, there is a remarkable persistence of a resistance minimum near $ν=7/2$ when two Landau levels belonging to the two subbands cross at the Fermi energy. The field position of this minimum tracks the 5/2 filling of the symm…
We study effects of tilted magnetic fields on energy levels in a double-quantum-well (DQW) system, focusing on the coupling of subbands and Landau levels (LLs). The subband-LL coupling induces anticrossings between LLs, manifested directly in the magnetoresistance. The anticrossing gap becomes larger than the spin splitting at the tilting angle $θ\sim 20^\circ $ and larger than the cyclotron energy at $θ\sim 50^\circ $, demonstrating that the subband-LL coupling exerts a strong influence on quantum Hall states even in at a relatively small $θ$ and plays a dominant role for larger $θ$. We also …
With minima in the diagonal conductance G_{xx} and in the absolute value of the derivative |dG_{xy}/dB| at the Hall conductance value G_{xy}=e^{2}/h, spin-splitting is observed in the quantum Hall effect of heavily Si-doped GaAs layers with low electron mobility 2000 cm^2/Vs in spite of the fact that the spin-splitting is much smaller than the level broadening. Experimental results can be explained in the frame of the scaling theory of the quantum Hall effect, applied independently to each of the two spin subbands.
We report on numerical simulations of the intrinsic spin Hall effect in semiconductor quantum wires as a function of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling strength, the electron density, and the width of the wire. We find that the strength of the spin Hall effect does not depend monotonically on these parameters, but instead exhibits a local maximum. This behavior is explained by considering the dispersion relation of the electrons in the wire, which is characterized by the anticrossing of adjacent subbands. These results lead to a simple estimate of the optimal wire width for spin Hall transport exp…
The pairing of composite fermions (CFs), electron-flux quasi-particles, is commonly proposed to explain the even-denominator fractional quantum Hall state observed at $ν=5/2$ in the first excited ($N=1$) Landau level (LL) of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES). While well-established to exist in the lowest ($N=0$) LL, much is unknown about CFs in the $N=1$ LL. Here we carry out geometric resonance measurements to detect CFs at $ν=5/2$ by subjecting the 2DES to a one-dimensional density modulation. Our data, taken at a temperature of 0.3 K, reveal no geometric resonances for CFs in the $N=…
We present a phase diagram for a two-dimensional electron system with two populated subbands. Using a gated GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum well, we have mapped out the phases of various quantum Hall states in the density-magnetic filed plane. The experimental phase diagram shows a very different topology from the conventional Landau fan diagram. We find regions of negative differential Hall resistance which are interpreted as preliminary evidence of the long sought reentrant quantum Hall transitions. We discuss the origins of the anomalous topology and the negative differential Hall resistance in …
In a recent experiment (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 87}, 036903 (2001)), Spielman et al observed a linearly dispersing collective mode in quantum Hall ferromagnet. While it qualitatively agrees with the Goldstone mode dispersion at small wave vector, the experimental mode velocity is slower than that calculated by previous theories by a factor about 0.55. A better agreement with the experimental data may possibly be achieved by taking the subband Landau level coupling into account due to the finiteness of the layer thickness. A novel coupling of quantum fluctuation to the tunneling is briefly discus…
We carry out a numerical study of the quantum Hall ferromagnetism in a two-subband system using a set of experimental parameters in a recently experiment [X. C. Zhang, I. Martin, and H. W. Jiang, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{74}, 073301 (2006)]. Employing the self-consistence local density approximation for growth direction wave function and the Hartree-Fock theory for the pseudospin anisotropy energy, we are able to account for the easy-axis and easy-plane quantum Hall ferromagnetism observed at total filling factor $ν= 3$ and $ν= 4$, respectively. Our study provides some insight of how the anisotrop…
We evaluate the distribution of Hall conductances in magnetic subbands of two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling placed in a periodic potential and perpendicular magnetic field. In this semiconductor structure the spin-orbit coupling mixes the states of different magnetic subbands and changes the distribution of their Hall conductances in comparison with the case of spinless particles. The calculations were made for semiconductor structures with a weak ($AlGaAs/GaAs$) and relatively strong ($GaAs/InGaAs$) SO and Zeeman interactions. The Hall conductances of fully occ…
We employ a magnetocapacitance technique to study the spectrum of the soft two-subband (or double-layer) electron system in a parabolic quantum well with a narrow tunnel barrier in the centre. In this system unbalanced by gate depletion, at temperatures $T\agt 30$ mK we observe two sets of quantum oscillations: one originates from the upper electron subband in the closer-to-the-gate part of the well and the other indicates the existence of common gaps in the spectrum at integer fillings. For the lowest filling factors $ν=1$ and $ν=2$, both the common gap presence down to the point of one- to t…
Motivated by recent experiments [Zhang \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{95}, 216801 (2005) and Ellenberger \textit{et al.}, cond-mat/0602271] reporting novel ringlike structures in the density--magnetic-field ($n_{2D}$\emph{--B}) diagrams of the longitudinal resistivity $ρ_{xx}$ of quantum wells with two subbands, we investigate theoretically here the magneto-transport properties of these quantum-Hall systems. We determine $ρ_{xx}$ via both the Hartree and the Kohn-Sham self-consistent schemes plus the Kubo formula. While the Hartree calculation yields diamond-shaped structures in the…
In this work we study the properties of a two-subband quasi-two-dimensional electron system in a strong magnetic field when the electron filling factor is equal to four. When the cyclotron energy is close to the intersubband splitting the system can be mapped onto a four-level electron system with an effective filling factor of two. The ground state is either a ferromagnetic state or a spin-singlet state, depending on the values of the inter-level splitting and Zeeman energy. The boundaries between these phases are strongly influenced by the inter-electron interaction. A significant exchange-m…
Proposed even-denominator fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) states suggest the possibility of excitations with non-Abelian braid statistics. Recent experiments on wide square quantum wells observe even-denominator FQHE even under electrostatic tilt. We theoretically analyze these structures and develop a procedure to accurately test proposed quantum Hall wavefunctions. We find that tilted wells favor partial subband polarization to yield Abelian even-denominator states. Our results show that tilting quantum wells effectively engineers different interaction potentials allowing exploration o…
We report on Hall field-induced resistance oscillations (HIRO) in a 60 nm-wide GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well with an \emph{in situ} grown back gate, which allows tuning the carrier density $n$. At low $n$, when all electrons are confined to the lowest subband (SB1), the HIRO frequency, proportional to the product of the cyclotron diameter and the Hall field, scales with $n^{-1/2}$, as expected. Remarkably, population of the second subband (SB2) significantly enhances HIRO, while their frequency now scales as $n^{-1}$. We demonstrate that in this two-subband regime HIRO still originate solely from b…
In wide GaAs quantum wells where two electric subbands are occupied we apply a parallel magnetic field or increase the electron density to cause a crossing of the two $N=0$ Landau levels of these subbands and with opposite spins. Near the crossing, the fractional quantum Hall states in the filling factor range $1<ν<3$ exhibit a remarkable sequence of pseudospin polarization transitions resulting from the interplay between the spin and subband degrees of freedom. The field positions of the transitions yield a new and quantitative measure of the composite Fermions' discrete energy level separati…
The article shows a simple model that computes the magnetoconduction and the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) in a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) where the spin is other degree of freedom in the system. The 2DES is confined in a quantum well (QW) immersed in a heterostructure, where the Rashba spin-orbit interaction is present. When an external magnetic field is applied to the system, the competition between the spin-orbit interaction and the Zeeman effect on the magnetoconduction of the 2DES is analysed. Also the model reproduces the case where two sub-bands are occupied in the QW. …
We propose to use phonon absorption spectroscopy to study many-body gaps and phases of two-subband heterostructures in the quantum Hall regime. Implications of the spin-orbit interaction for phonon absorption in this system are considered.
Low-temperature electron magnetotransport in single GaAs quantum wells with two populated subbands is studied at large filling factors. Magneto-inter-subband (MIS) and acoustic-phonon induced oscillations of the dissipative resistance are found to be coexisting but interfering substantially with each other. The experiments show that amplitude of the MIS-oscillations enhances significantly by phonons, indicating "constructive interference" between the phonon scattering and the intersubband electron transitions. Temperature damping of the quantum oscillations is found to be related to broadening…
We employ magnetocapacitance and far-infrared spectroscopy techniques to study the spectrum of the double-layer electron system in a parabolic quantum well with a narrow tunnel barrier in the centre. For gate-bias-controlled asymmetric electron density distributions in this soft two-subband system we observe both individual subband gaps and double layer gaps at integer filling factor $ν$. The bilayer gaps are shown to be either trivial common for two subbands or caused by hybridization of electron subbands in magnetic field. We describe the observed hybrid gaps at $ν=1$ and $ν=2$ within a simp…
We study the energy spectrum and the quantized Hall conductance of electrons in a two-dimensional periodic potential with perpendicular magnetic field WITHOUT neglecting the coupling of the Landau bands. Remarkably, even for weak Landau band coupling significant changes in the Hall conductance compared to the one-band approximation of Hofstadter's butterfly are found. The principal deviations are the rearrangement of subbands and unexpected subband contributions to the Hall conductance.
We construct an effective Hamiltonian for electrons in the fractional quantum Hall regime for GaAs and graphene that takes into account Landau level mixing (for both GaAs and graphene) and subband mixing (for GaAs, due to the nonzero width of the quantum well). This mixing has the important qualitative effect of breaking particle-hole symmetry as well as renormalizing the strength of the interparticle interactions. Both effects could have important consequences for the prospect that the fractional quantum Hall effect at $ν=5/2$ is described by states that support non-Abelian excitations such a…
We study the influence of step defect on surface states in three-dimensional topological insulators subject to a perpendicular magnetic field. By calculating the energy spectrum of the surface states, we find that Landau levels (LLs) can form on flat regions of the surface and are distant from the step defect, and several subbands emerge at side surface of the step defect. The subband which connects to the two zeroth LLs is spin-polarized and chiral. In particular, when the electron transports along the side surface, the electron spin direction can be manipulated arbitrarily by gate voltage. A…
We study the many-body effects in a two-subband quasi-two-dimensional electron system in a quantizing magnetic field at filling factor three. A manifestation of these effects in the phonon absorption spectroscopy is discussed. The electron system is mapped onto a two-level system with the separation between levels determined by the intersubband splitting and the cyclotron energy. The electron-electron interaction enhances the excitation gap, which exists at all values of the interlevel splitting. This results in a single-peak structure of the phonon absorption rate as a function of magnetic fi…
The DC and AC conductivities of the n-GaAs/AlAs heterostructure with two filled size quantization levels are studied within a wide magnetic field range. The electron spectrum of such heterostructure is characterized by two subbands (symmetric $S$ and antisymmetric $AS$), separated by the band gap $Δ_{12}=15.5$ meV. It is shown that, in the linear regime at the applied magnetic field $B >3$ T, the system exhibits oscillations corresponding to the integer quantum Hall effect. A quite complicated pattern of such oscillations is well interpreted in terms of transitions between Landau levels relate…
In a two-subband GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron system, the phase diagram of longitudinal resistivity ρ_xx in density and magnetic field plane exhibits an intriguing structure centered at filling factor ν= 4 which is strikingly different from the ring-like structures at lower magnetic fields. Thermal activation measurements reveal an anticrossing gap on each boundary of the structure where intersubband Landau Levels with parallel or antiparallel spin are brought into degeneracy. While the physics of the anticrossing can be ascribed to the pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnetism, as report…
We investigate numerically different phases that can occur at half filling in the lowest and the first excited Landau levels in wide-well twodimensional electron systems exposed to a perpendicular magnetic field. Within a twocomponent model that takes into account only the two lowest electronic subbands of the quantum well, we derive a phase diagram that compares favorably with an experimental one by Shabani et al. [Phys. Rev. B 88, 245413 (2013)]. In addition to the compressible composite-fermion Fermi liquid in narrow wells with a substantial subband gap and the incompressible twocomponent (…
Magneto-transport measurements in a wide GaAs quantum well in which we can tune the Fermi energy ($E_F$) to lie in different Landau levels of the two occupied electric subbands reveal a remarkable pattern for the appearance and disappearance of fractional quantum Hall states at $ν$ = 10/3, 11/3, 13/3, 14/3, 16/3, and 17/3. The data provide direct evidence that the $q/3$ states are stable and strong even at such high fillings as long as $E_F$ lies in a ground-state (N=0) Landau level of either of the two electric subbands, regardless of whether that level belongs to the symmetric or the anti-sy…
We study light scattering from a periodically modulated two dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field. If a subband is partially filled, the imaginary part of the dielectric function as a function of frequency contains additional discontinuities to the case of completely filled subbands. The positions of the discontinuities may be determined from the partial filling factor and the height of the discontinuity can be directly related to the modulation potential. The light scattering cross section contains a new peak which is absent for integer filling.
We extensively study the localization and the quantum Hall effect in the Hofstadter butterfly, which emerges in a two-dimensional electron system with a weak two-dimensional periodic potential. We numerically calculate the Hall conductivity and the localization length for finite systems with the disorder in general magnetic fields, and estimate the energies of the extended levels in an infinite system. We obtain the Hall plateau diagram on the whole region of the Hofstadter butterfly, and propose a theory for the evolution of the plateau structure with increasing disorder. There we show that a…
We report on theoretical studies of recently discovered microwave-induced resistance oscillations and zero resistance states in Hall bars with two occupied subbands. In the same results, resistance presents a peculiar shape which appears to have a built-in interference effect not observed before. We apply the microwave-driven electron orbit model, which implies a radiation-driven oscillation of the two-dimensional electron system. Thus, we calculate different intra and inter-subband electron scattering rates and times that are revealing as different microwave-driven oscillations frequencies fo…
An experimental analysis for two parallel conducting layers determines the full resistivity tensor of the parallel layer, at magnetic fields where the other layer is in the quantum Hall regime. In heterostructures which exhibit parallel conduction in the modulation-doped layer, this analysis quantitatively determines the charge density in the doping layer and can be used to estimate the mobility. To illustrate one application, experimental data show magnetic freeze-out of parallel conduction in a modulation doped heterojunction. As another example, the carrier density of a minimally populated …
We study non-linear transport phenomena in a high-mobility bilayer system with two closely spaced populated electronic subbands in a perpendicular magnetic field. For a moderate direct current excitation, we observe zero-differential-resistance states with a characteristic 1/B periodicity. We investigate, both experimentally and theoretically, the Hall field-induced resistance oscillations which modulate the high-frequency magneto-intersubband oscillations in our system if we increase the current. We also observe and describe the influence of direct current on the magnetoresistance in the pres…
We report magneto-transport measurements in wide GaAs quantum wells with tunable density to probe the stability of the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor $ν= $ 5/2 in the vicinity of the crossing between Landau levels (LLs) belonging to the different (symmetric and antisymmetric) electric subbands. When the Fermi energy ($E_F$) lies in the excited-state LL of the symmetric subband, the 5/2 quantum Hall state is surprisingly stable and gets even stronger near this crossing, and then suddenly disappears and turns into a metallic state once $E_F$ moves to the ground-state LL of the …
We report systematic quantum Hall transport experiments on Fabry-Perot electron interferometers at ultra-low-temperatures. The GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure devices consist of two constrictions defined by etch trenches in 2D electron layer, enclosing an approximately circular island. Front gates deposited in etch trenches allow to fine-tune the device for symmetry and to change the constriction filling, relative to the bulk. The low-field longitudinal and Hall magnetotransport shows Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and integer quantum Hall plateaus. A systematic variation of front-gate voltage aff…
We observe two-fold shell filling in the spectra of closed one-dimensional quantum dots formed in single-wall carbon nanotubes. Its signatures include a bimodal distribution of addition energies, correlations in the excitation spectra for different electron number, and alternation of the spins of the added electrons. This provides a contrast with quantum dots in higher dimensions, where such spin pairing is absent. We also see indications of an additional fourfold periodicity indicative of K-K' subband shells. Our results suggest that the absence of shell filling in most isolated nanotube dots…
We have measured magnetotransport at half-filled high Landau levels in a quantum well with two occupied electric subbands. We find resistivities that are {\em isotropic} in perpendicular magnetic field but become strongly {\em anisotropic} at $ν$ = 9/2 and 11/2 on tilting the field. The anisotropy appears at an in-plane field, $B_{ip} \sim$ 2.5T, with the easy-current direction {\em parallel} to $B_{ip}$ but rotates by 90$^{\circ}$ at $B_{ip} \sim$ 10T and points now in the same direction as in single-subband samples. This complex behavior is in quantitative agreement with theoretical calculat…
The direct-current (dc) $σ_{xx}^{dc}$ and alternating-current (ac) $σ_{xx}^{ac}=σ_1-iσ_2$ conductivities of a wide (46 nm) GaAs quantum well with the bilayer electron density distribution are measured. It is found that the magnetic field dependence of $σ_{xx}$ exhibits three sets of oscillations related to the transitions between Landau levels in symmetric and antisymmetric subbands and with the transitions occurring owing to the Zeeman splitting of these subbands. The analysis of the frequency dependence of the ac conductivity and the $σ_1 / σ_2$ ratio demonstrates that the conductivity at th…
We investigate the intrinsic spin Hall effect in two-dimensional electron gases in quantum wells with two subbands, where a new intersubband-induced spin-orbit coupling is operative. The bulk spin Hall conductivity $σ^z_{xy}$ is calculated in the ballistic limit within the standard Kubo formalism in the presence of a magnetic field $B$ and is found to remain finite in the B=0 limit, as long as only the lowest subband is occupied. Our calculated $σ^z_{xy}$ exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior and can change its sign as the Fermi energy (the carrier areal density $n_{2D}$) is varied between the subb…
We investigate the magneto-transport properties of electrons on a square lattice under a magnetic field with the alternate flux strength $ϕ\pmΔϕ$ in neighboring plaquettes. A new peculiar behavior of the Hall conductance has been found and is robust against weak disorder: if $ϕ={p\over{2N}}\times{2π}$ ($p$ and $2N$ are coprime integers) is fixed, the Chern numbers of Landau subbands will be redistributed between neighboring pairs and hence the total quantized Hall conductance exhibits a direct transition by $\pm{N}e^2/h$ at critical fillings when $Δϕ$ is increased from 0 up to a critical value…
We use numerical simulations to investigate the spin Hall effect in quantum wires in the presence of both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. We find that the intrinsic spin Hall effect is highly anisotropic with respect to the orientation of the wire, and that the nature of this anisotropy depends strongly on the electron density and the relative strengths of the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. In particular, at low densities when only one subband of the quantum wire is occupied, the spin Hall effect is strongest for electron momentum along the $[\bar{1}10]$ axis, which is…
We investigate the spin-orbit (s-o) interaction in two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) in quantum wells with two subbands. From the $8\times 8$ Kane model, we derive a new inter-subband-induced s-o term which resembles the functional form of the Rashba s-o -- but is non-zero even in \emph{symmetric} structures. This follows from the distinct parity of the confined states (even/odd) which obliterates the need for asymmetric potentials. We self-consistently calculate the new s-o coupling strength for realistic wells and find it comparable to the usual Rashba constant. Our new s-o term gives r…
Spin-Hall effect in ballistic 2D electron gas with Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling and smooth edge confinement is studied. We predict that the interplay of semiclassical electron motion and quantum dynamics of spins leads to several distinct features in spin density along the edge that originate from accumulation of turning points from many classical trajectories. Strong peak is found near a point of the vanishing of electron Fermi velocity in the lower spin-split subband. It is followed by a strip of negative spin density that extends until the crossing of the local Fermi energy with the dege…
We employ magnetocapacitance measurements to study the spectrum of a double layer system with gate-voltage-tuned electron density distributions in tilted magnetic fields. For the dissipative state in normal magnetic fields at filling factor $ν=3$ and 4, a parallel magnetic field component is found to give rise to opening a gap at the Fermi level. We account for the effect in terms of parallel-field-caused orthogonality breaking of the Landau wave functions with different quantum numbers for two subbands.
We report anomalous behavior in a double-layer two dimensional hole gas (2DHG) at even integer filling factors which includes hysteresis in the longitudinal and Hall resistances and a very weak temperature dependence of the resistance minima. All anomalies disappear and the conventional quantum Hall effect behavior recovers when a thin metal film is placed on top of the 2DHG. The behavior is attributed to presence of the theoretically predicted magnetic ordering at even integer filling factors which causes the formation of macroscopic spin-charge domains.
We theoretically investigate a quasi-one-dimensional quantum wire, where the lowest two subbands are populated, in the presence of a helical magnetic field. We uncover a backscattering mechanism involving the helical magnetic field and Coulomb interaction between the electrons. The combination of these ingredients results in scattering resonances and partial gaps which give rise to non-standard plateaus and conductance dips at certain electron densities. The positions and values of these dips are independent of material parameters, serving as direct transport signatures of this mechanism. Our …
Within the newly formulated composite fermion hierarchy the filling fraction of a spherical quantum Hall system is obtained when it can be expressed as an odd or even denominator fraction. A plot of $ν\frac{2S}{N-1}$ as a function of $2S$ for a constant number of particles (up to N=10001) exhibits structure of the fractional quantum Hall effect. It is confirmed that $ν_e +ν_h=1$ for all particle-hole conjugate systems, except systems with $N_e =N_h$, and $N_e=N_h \pm 1$.
We report low temperature electronic transport results on the fractional quantum Hall effect of composite fermions at Landau level filling nu = 4/11 in a very high mobility and low density sample. Measurements were carried out at temperatures down to 15mK, where an activated magnetoresistance Rxx and a quantized Hall resistance Rxy, within 1% of the expected value of h/(4/11)e^2, were observed. The temperature dependence of the Rxx minimum at 4/11 yields an activation energy gap of ~ 7 mK. Developing Hall plateaus were also observed at the neighboring states at nu = 3/8 and 5/13.
Motivated by recent experimental attempts to detect the Hofstadter butterfly, we numerically calculate the Hall conductivity in a modulated two-dimensional electron system with disorder in the quantum Hall regime. We identify the critical energies where the states are extended for each of butterfly subbands, and obtain the trajectory as a function of the disorder. Remarkably, we find that when the modulation becomes anisotropic, the critical energy branches accompanying a change of the Hall conductivity.
A low energy action for double-layer quantum Hall systems at filling fractions $ν= 2/m$ ($m$ an odd integer) is introduced. Interlayer antiferromagnetic exchange induces a phase with canted spin order, and also a spin-singlet phase. Universal properties of zero and finite temperature transitions are obtained. We compute the critical temperature at which the canted order vanishes in a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Implications for recent light scattering experiments at $ν= 2$ are noted.
At low Landau level filling of a two-dimensional electron system, typically associated with the formation of an electron crystal, we observe local minima in Rxx at filling factors nu=2/11, 3/17, 3/19, 2/13, 1/7, 2/15, 2/17, and 1/9. Each of these developing fractional quantum Hall (FQHE) states appears only above a filling factor-specific temperature. This can be interpreted as the melting of an electron crystal and subsequent FQHE liquid formation. The observed sequence of FQHE states follow the series of composite fermion states emanating from nu=1/6 and nu=1/8.
We study intrinsic spin Hall effect in p-type GaAs quantum well structure described by Luttinger Hamiltonian and a Rashba spin-orbit coupling arising from the structural inversion symmetry breaking. The Rashba term induces an energy level crossing in the lowest heavy hole subband, which gives rise to a resonant spin Hall conductance. The resonance may be used to identify the intrinsic spin Hall effect in experiments.
We present an effective Hamiltonian for a bilayer quantum Hall system at filling factor $ν=1$ neglecting charge fluctuations. Our model is formulated in terms of spin and pseudospin operators and is an exact representation of the system within the above approximation. We analyze its low-lying excitations in terms of spin-wave theory. Moreover we add to previous first-principle exact-diagonalization studies concentrating on the quantum phase transition seen in this system.
We report simultaneous transport and scanning microwave impedance microscopy to examine the correlation between transport quantization and filling of the bulk Landau levels in the quantum Hall regime in gated graphene devices. Surprisingly, a comparison of these measurements reveals that quantized transport typically occurs below the complete filling of bulk Landau levels, when the bulk is still conductive. This result points to a revised understanding of transport quantization when carriers are accumulated by gating. We discuss the implications on transport study of the quantum Hall effect in…
We use a Mach-Zehnder quantum Hall interferometer of a novel design to investigate the interference effects at fractional filling factors. Our device brings together the advantages of usual Mach-Zehnder and Fabry-Perot quantum Hall interferometers. It realizes the simplest-for-analysis Mach-Zehnder interference scheme, free from Coulomb blockade effects. By contrast to the standard Mach-Zehnder realization, our device does not contain an etched region inside the interference loop. For the first time for Mach-Zehnder interference scheme, the device demonstrates interference oscillations with $Φ…
We discuss the Berry curvature calculations of the Hall viscosity for the unprojected to the lowest Landau level wave function of the Fermi-liquid-like state. We conclude, within assumptions made, that in the linear response, with small deformation of the system and in the thermodynamic limit, the Hall viscosity takes the value characteristic for the Laughlin states. We present arguments that the value is the same even for general deformations in the same limit.
