We present comprehensive results on the edge-mode velocities in a quantum Hall droplet with realistic interaction and confinement at various filling fractions. We demonstrate that the charge-mode velocity scales roughly with the valence Landau level filling fraction and the Coulomb energy in the corresponding Landau level. At Landau level filling fraction nu = 5/2, the stark difference between the bosonic charge-mode velocity and the fermionic neutral-mode velocity can manifest itself in the thermal smearing of the non-Abelian quasiparticle interference. We estimate the dependence of the coherence temperature on the confining potential strength, which may be tunable experimentally to enhance the non-Abelian state.
We report experiments on the interference through spin states of electrons in a quantum dot (QD) embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer. We have picked up a spin-pair state, for which the environmental conditions are ideally similar and have traced the AB amplitude in the range of the gate voltage that covers the pair. The behavior of the asymmetry in the amplitude around the two Coulomb peaks agrees with the theoretical prediction that relates a spin-flip process in a QD to the quantum dephasing of electrons. These results consist evidence of "partial coherence" due to an entangleme…
We investigate the dynamics of charge--states coherence in a degenerate double--dot Aharonov--Bohm interferometer with finite interdot Coulomb interactions. The quantum coherence of the charge states is found to be sensitive to the transport setup configurations, involving both the single--electron impurity channels and the Coulomb--assisted ones. We numerically demonstrate the emergence of a complete coherence between the two charge states, with the relative phase being continuously controllable through the magnetic flux. Remarkably, a fully coherent charge qubit arises at the double--dots el…
We investigate nonlinear transport in electronic Fabry-Perot interferometers in the integer quantum Hall regime. For interferometers sufficiently large that Coulomb blockade effects are absent, a checkerboard-like pattern of conductance oscillations as a function of dc bias and perpendicular magnetic field is observed. Edge-state velocities extracted from the checkerboard data are compared to model calculations and found to be consistent with a crossover from skipping orbits at low fields to E x B drift at high fields. Suppression of visibility as a function of bias and magnetic field is accou…
We study the influence of spin polarization on the degree of coherence of electron transport through interacting quantum dots. To this end, we identify transport regimes in which the degree of coherence can be related to the visibility of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the current through a quantum-dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometer with one normal and one ferromagnetic lead. For these regimes, we calculate the visibility and, thus, the degree of coherence, as a function of the degree of spin polarization of the ferromagnetic lead.
Design of a Fabry-Perot (double point contact) interferometer to measure fractional quantum Hall effect quasiparticle charge properties, and in particular the 5/2 excitations, poses an important trade-off: the device size should be minimized to allow two path interference, since the coherence length of the quasiparticles in the correlated states are expected be limited, yet a small device promotes the dominance of Coulomb charging effects which would overwhelm the Aharonov-Bohm interference effect. In this study a series of small but different size interferometers from the same high density he…
Coherence in electronic interferometers is typically believed to be restored fully in the limit of small voltages, frequencies and temperatures. However, it is crucial to check this essentially perturbative argument by nonperturbative methods. Here, we use the numerical renormalization group to study ac transport and decoherence in an experimentally realizable model interferometer, a parallel double quantum dot coupled to a phonon mode. The model allows to clearly distinguish renormalization effects from decoherence. We discuss finite frequency transport and confirm the restoration of coherenc…
The nonequilibrium real-time dynamics of electron coherence is explored in the quantum transport through the double-dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometers. We solve the exact master equation to find the exact quantum state of the device, from which the changes of the electron coherence through the magnetic flux in the nonequilibrium transport processes is obtained explicitly. We find that the relative phase between the two charge states of the double dot localizes to $\fracπ{2}$ or $-\fracπ{2}$ for all different magnetic flux. This nontrivial phase localization process can be manifested in the meas…
We report the observation of an unpredicted behavior of interfering 2D electrons in the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) regime via a utilization of an electronic analog of the well-known Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). The beauty of this experiment lies in the simplicity of two path interference. Electrons that travel the two paths via edge channels, feel only the edge potential and the strong magnetic field; both typical in the IQHE regime. Yet, the interference of these electrons via the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect, behaves surprisingly in a most uncommon way. We found, at filling factor…
We propose an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer consisted of two topological superconducting chains (TSCs) to generate coherence of Majorana qubits, each qubit is made of two Majorana zero modes (MZMs) with the definite fermion parity. We obtain the generalized exact master equation as well as its solution and study the real-time dynamics of the MZM qubit states under various operations. We demonstrate that by tuning the magnetic flux, the decoherence rates can be modified significantly, and dissipationless MZMs can be generated. By applying the bias voltage to the leads, one can manipulate MZM qub…
By considering a nanoscale Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer containing a parrallel-coupled double dot coupled to the source and drain electrodes, we investigate the AB phase oscillations of transport current via the bonding and antibonding state channels. The results we obtained justify the experimental analysis given in [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{106}, 076801 (2011)] that bonding state currents in different energy configurations are almost the same. On the other hand, we extend the analysis to the transient transport current components flowing through different channels, to explore the effect…
An experimental technique is developed to simultaneously measure both temporal and spatial coherences of a light source by altering a standard Michelson interferometer, which has been primarily used for measuring temporal coherence only. Instead of using simple plane mirrors, two retroreflectors and their longitudinal and lateral movements are utilized to incorporate spatial coherence measurement using this modified Michelson interferometer. In general, one uses Young double slit interferometer to measure spatial coherence. However, this modified interferometer can be used as an optical setup …
We study the real time dynamics of electron coherence in a double quantum dot two-terminal Aharonov-Bohm geometry, taking into account repulsion effects between the dots' electrons. The system is simulated by extending a numerically exact path integral method, suitable for treating transport and dissipation in biased impurity models [Phys. Rev. B 82, 205323 (2010)]. Numerical simulations at finite interaction strength are supported by master equation calculations in two other limits: assuming non-interacting electrons, and working in the Coulomb blockade regime. Focusing on the intrinsic coher…
We have determined the finite temperature coherence length of edge states in the Integer Quantum Hall Effect (IQHE) regime. This was realized by measuring the visibility of electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometers of different sizes, at filling factor 2. The visibility shows an exponential decay with the temperature. The characteristic temperature scale is found inversely proportional to the length of the interferometer arm, allowing to define a coherence length $ł_ϕ$. The variations of $ł_ϕ$ with magnetic field are the same for all samples, with a maximum located at the upper end of the quantu…
Based on Keldysh non-equilibrium Green function method, we have investigated spin current production in a hybrid T-shaped device, consisting of a central quantum dot connected to the leads and a side dot which only couples to the central dot. The topology of this structure allows for quantum interference of the different paths that go across the device, yielding Fano resonances in the spin dependent transport properties. Correlation effects are taken into account at the central dot and handled within a mean field approximation. Its interplay with the Fano effect is analyzed in the strong coupl…
We consider a ballistic Mach-Zehnder interferometer for electrons propagating chirally in one dimension (such as in an integer Quantum Hall effect edge channel). In such a system, dephasing occurs when the finite range of the interaction potential is taken into account. Using the tools of bosonization, we discuss the decay of coherence as a function of propagation distance and energy. We supplement the exact solution by a semiclassical approach that is physically transparent and is exact at high energies. In particular, we study in more detail the recently predicted universal power-law decay o…
We investigate the charge-states coherence underlying the nonequilibirum transport through a spinless double-dot Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer. Both the current noise spectrum and real-time dynamics are evaluated with the well-established dissipaton-equation-of-motion method. The resulted spectrums show the characteristic peaks and dips, arising from coherent Rabi oscillation dynamics, with the environment-assisted indirect inter-dot tunnel coupling mechanism. The observed spectroscopic features are in a quantitative agreement to the real-time dynamics of the reduced density matrix off-dia…
The coherence of quantum Hall (QH) edges play the deciding factor in demonstrating an electron interferometer, which has potential to realize a topological qubit. A Graphene p-n junction (PNJ) with co-propagating spin and valley polarized QH edges is a promising platform for studying an electron interferometer. However, though a few experiments have been attempted for such PNJ via conductance measurements, the edge dynamics (coherent or incoherent) of QH edges at a PNJ, where either spin or valley symmetry or both are broken, remain unexplored. In this work, we have carried out the measurement…
Quantum Hall edge states offer avenues for quasiparticle interferometry, provided that the ratio between phase coherence length and quantum Hall interferometer (QHI) size is large enough. Maximizing this ratio by shrinking the QHI area favors Coulomb interactions, impairing clear interferences observation. Here, we use scanning gate spectroscopy to probe interference regime in antidots-based graphene nano-QHIs, free of localized states (LS). A simple Fabry-Perot model, without Coulomb interaction, reproduces the QHI phenomenology, even in the smallest QHI, highlighting the LS detrimental role.
A Mach-Zehnder interferometer with spatial and spectral resolution was used to probe spontaneous coherence in cold exciton gases, which are implemented experimentally in the ring of indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells. A strong enhancement of the exciton coherence length is observed at temperatures below a few Kelvin. The increase of the coherence length is correlated with the macroscopic spatial ordering of excitons.
The work is motivated by the puzzling results of the recent experiment [S. Tewari et al., Phys. Rev. B 93, 035420 (2016)], where a robust coherence recovery from a certain energy was detected for an electron injected into the quantum Hall edge at the filling factor 2. After passing through a quantum dot the electron then tunnels into the edge with a subsequent propagation towards a symmetric Mach-Zender interferometer, after which the visibility of Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations is measured. According to conventional understanding its decay with the increasing energy of the injected electron …
Electron transport through two parallel quantum dots is a kind of solid-state realization of double-path interference. We demonstrate that the inter-dot Coulomb correlation and quantum coherence would result in strong current fluctuations with a divergent Fano factor at zero frequency. We also provide physical interpretation for this surprising result, which displays its generic feature and allows us to recover this phenomenon in more complicated systems.
We report on quantum interference between a pair of counterpropagating quantum Hall edge states that are separated by a high quality tunnel barrier. Observed Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are analyzed in terms of resonant tunneling between coupled Luttinger liquids that creates bound electronic states between pairs of tunnel centers that act like interference slits. We place a lower bound in the range of 20-40 $μ$m for the phase coherence length and directly confirm the extended phase coherence of quantum Hall edge states.
Phase relaxation of electrons transferring through an electromechanical transistor is studied using the Aharonov-Bohm interferometer. With the approach of quantum master equation, the phase properties of an electron are numerically analyzed based on the interference fringes. Coherence of electron is partially destroyed by its scattering on excited levels of the local nanomechanical oscillator. Transmission amplitudes with respect to two adjacent mechanical vibrational levels have a phase difference of $π$. The character of phase shift by $π$ depends on the oscillator frequency only and is robu…
Proximity induced quantum coherence of electrons in multi-terminal voltage-driven hybrid normal-superconducting nanostructures may result in a non-trivial interplay between topology-dependent Josephson and Aharonov-Bohm effects. We elucidate a trade-off between stimulation of the voltage-dependent Josephson current due to non-equilibrium effects and quantum dephasing of quasiparticles causing reduction of both Josephson and Aharonov-Bohm currents. We also predict phase-shifted quantum coherent oscillations of the induced electrostatic potential as a function of the externally applied magnetic …
We study the steady-state characteristics and the transient behavior of the nonequilibrium double-dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometer using analytical tools and numerical simulations. Our simple setup includes noninteracting degenerate quantum dots that are coupled to two biased metallic leads at the same strength. A magnetic flux $Φ$ is piercing the setup perpendicularly. As we tune the degenerate dots energies away from the symmetric point we observe four nontrivial magnetic flux control effects: (i) flux dependency of the dots occupation, (ii) magnetic flux induced occupation difference betwee…
A non-perturbative treatment is developed for the dephasing produced by the shot noise of a one- dimensional electron channel. It is applied to two systems: a charge qubit and the electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer, both of them interacting with an adjacent partitioned electronic channel acting as a detector. We find that the visibility (interference contrast) can display oscillations as a function of detector voltage and interaction time. This is a unique consequence of the non-Gaussian properties of the shot noise, and only occurs in the strong coupling regime, when the phase contributed…
We calculate the tunnelling current through a Fabry-Pérot interferometer in the fractional quantum Hall regime. Within linear response theory (weak tunnelling but arbitrary source-drain voltage) we find a general expression for the current due to tunnelling of quasiparticles in terms of Carlson's $R$ function. Our result is valid for fractional quantum Hall states with an edge theory consisting of a charged channel and any number of neutral channels, with possibly different edge velocities and different chiralities. We analyse the case with a single neutral channel in detail, which applies for…
Engineering and studying few-electron states in ballistic conductors is a key step towards understanding entanglement in quantum electronic systems. In this Letter, we introduce the intrinsic two-electron coherence of an electronic source in quantum Hall edge channels and relate it to two-electron wavefunctions and to current noise in an Hanbury Brown--Twiss interferometer. Inspired by the analogy with photon quantum optics, we propose to measure the intrinsic two-electron coherence of a source using low-frequency current correlation measurements at the output of a Franson interferometer. To i…
The Fano effect, which arises from an interference between a localized state and the continuum, reveals a fundamental aspect of quantum mechanics. We have realized a tunable Fano system in a quantum dot (QD) in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer, which is the first convincing demonstration of this effect in mesoscopic systems. With the aid of the continuum, the localized state inside the QD acquires itinerancy over the system even in the Coulomb blockade. Through tuning of the parameters, which is an advantage of the present system, unique properties of the Fano effect on the phase and coherence …
Quantum interferometers are powerful tools for probing the wave-nature and exchange statistics of indistinguishable particles. Of particular interest are interferometers formed by the chiral, one-dimensional (1D) edge channels of the quantum Hall effect (QHE) that guide electrons without dissipation. Using quantum point contacts (QPCs) as beamsplitters, these 1D channels can be split and recombined, enabling interference of charged particles. Such quantum Hall interferometers (QHIs) can be used for studying exchange statistics of anyonic quasiparticles. In this study we develop a robust QHI fa…
We study dephasing in an electronic Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer based on quantum Hall (QH) edge states by a micromiter-sized Ohmic contact embedded in one of its arms. We find that at the filling factor $ν=1$, as well as in the case where an Ohmic contact is connected to an MZ interfeoremter by a quantum point contact (QPC) that transmits only one electron channel, the phase coherence may not be fully suppressed. Namely, if the voltage bias $Δμ$ and the temperature $T$ are small compared to the charging energy of the Ohmic contact $E_C$, the free fermion picture is manifested, and the vis…
The quantum Hall (QH) effect represents a unique playground where quantum coherence of electrons can be exploited for various applications, from metrology to quantum computation. In the fractional regime it also hosts anyons, emergent quasiparticles that are neither bosons nor fermions and possess fractional statistics. Their detection and manipulation represent key milestones in view of topologically protected quantum computation schemes. Exploiting the high degree of phase coherence, edge states in the QH regime have been investigated by designing and constructing electronic interferometers,…
We discuss the influence of a zero-temperature environment on a coherent quantum system. First, we calculate the reduced density operator of the system in the framework of the well-known, exactly solvable model of an oscillator coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators. Then, we propose the sketch of an Aharonov--Bohm-like interferometer showing, through interference measurements, the decrease of the coherence length of the system due to the interaction with the environment, even in the zero temperature limit.
We analyse a proposal that we have recently put forward for an interface between matter-wave and optomechanical technologies from the perspective of macroscopic quantumness. In particular, by making use of a measure of macroscopicity in quantum superpositions that is particularly well suited for continuous variables systems, we demonstrate the existence of working points for our interface at which a quantum mechanical superposition of genuinely mesoscopic states is achieved. Our proposal thus holds the potential to affirm itself as a viable atom-to-mechanics transducer of quantum coherences.
