Let $X$ be a Berkovich space over a valued field. We prove that every finite group is a Galois group over $\Ms(B)(T)$, where $\Ms(B)$ is the field of meromorphic functions over a part $B$ of $X$ satisfying some conditions. This gives a new geometric proof that every finite group is a Galois group over $K(T)$, where $K$ is a complete valued field with non-trivial valuation.
Then we switch to Berkovich spaces over ${\bf Z}$ and use a similar strategy to give a new proof of the following theorem by D. Harbater: every finite group is a Galois group over a field of convergent arithmetic power series. We believe our proof to be more geometric and elementary that the original one. We have included the necessary background on Berkovich spaces over ${\bf Z}$.
We develop properties of unramified, étale and smooth morphisms between Berkovich spaces over $\mathbb{Z}$. We prove that they satisfy properties analogous to those of morphisms of schemes and we provide analytification criteria. Our results hold for any valued field, rings of integers of a number field and discrete valuation rings. Those cases are treated by a unified way.
We investigate the local properties of Berkovich spaces over Z. Using Weierstrass theorems, we prove that the local rings of those spaces are noetherian, regular in the case of affine spaces and excellent. We also show that the structure sheaf is coherent. Our methods work over other base rings (valued fields, discrete valuation rings, rings of integers of number fields, etc.) and provide a unified treatment of complex and p-adic spaces.
Although Berkovich spaces may fail to be metrizable when defined over too big a field, we prove that a large part of their topology can be recovered through sequences: for instance, limit points of subsets are actual limits of sequences and compact subsets are sequentially compact. Our proof uses extension of scalars in an essential way and we need to investigate some of its properties. We show that a point in a disc may be defined over a subfield of countable type and that, over algebraically closed fields, every point is universal: in an extension of scalars, it may be canonically lifted.
The proof by Ullmo and Zhang of Bogomolov's conjecture about points of small height in abelian varieties made a crucial use of an equidistribution property for ``small points'' in the associated complex abelian variety. We study the analogous equidistribution property at $p$-adic places. Our results can be conveniently stated within the framework of the analytic spaces defined by Berkovich. The first one is valid in any dimension but is restricted to ``algebraic metrics'', the second one is valid for curves, but allows for more general metrics, in particular to the normalized heights with resp…
Let $k$ be a number field. We construct homogeneous spaces of $SL_{n,k}$ with finite nilpotent non-abelian stabilizers for which the Brauer-Manin obstruction does not explain the failure of strong approximation (resp. the failure of the integral Hasse principle).
In arXiv:1410.5671, Jahnel and Loughran prove the local global principle for existence of linear spaces of dimension $r$ on smooth complete intersections of two quadrics in projective space of dimension $2r+2$. We present an alternative proof of a slightly more general result.
We consider the cohomology of local systems on the moduli space of curves of genus 2 and the moduli space of abelian surfaces. We give an explicit formula for the Eisenstein cohomology and a conjectural formula for the endoscopic contribution. We show how counting curves over finite fields provides us with detailed information about Siegel modular forms.
We give a new definition, simpler but equivalent, of the abelian category of Banach-Colmez spaces introduced by Colmez, and we explain the precise relationship with the category of coherent sheaves on the Fargues-Fontaine curve. One goes from one category to the other by changing the t-structure on the derived category. Along the way, we obtain a description of the pro-étale cohomology of the open disk and the affine space, of independent interest.
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p >0. Let $m \in \N$, (m,p)=1. We study $\fp$-vector spaces of logarithmic differential forms on the projective line such that each non zero form has a unique zero at $\infty$ of given order m-1. We discuss the existence of such vectors spaces according to the value of m. We give applications to the lifting to characteristic 0 of $(\Z /p\Z)^n$ actions as k-automorphisms of $k[[t]]$.
We study the local-global principle for zero-cycles of degree 1 on certain varieties fibered over the projective space. Among other applications, we prove that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle and weak approximation for zero-cycles of degree 1 on Severi-Brauer-variety bundles or Châtelet-surface bundles over the projective space.
We prove that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for homogeneous spaces with nilpotent stabilizer. We thus generalize recent results by Harpaz and Wittenberg on finite "hyper-solvable" stabilizers. In particular, this result is true for abelian stabilizers without any hypotheses on the ambient group, which generalizes classic results by Borovoi on the subject. We prove moreover that these spaces have the real approximation property.
We study here the Berkovich line over the ring of integers of a number field. It is a natural object which contains complex and non-Archimedean analytic spaces associated to each place. We prove that this line satisfies good topological and algebraic properties and exhibit a few examples of Stein spaces that lie in it. We derive applications to the study of convergent arithmetic power series: choice of zeroes and poles, noetherianity of global rings and inverse Galois problem. Typical examples of such power series are given by analytic functions on the open complex unit disk whose Taylor devel…
----- Let $K$ be a global field and $G$ a finite…
We show that the set of periods of an automorphism of the affine plane defined over a $p$-adic field is bounded above by a constant independent from the automorphism. We deduce from this result a new proof in arithmetic dynamics of the Silverman's conjecture in dimension 2.
Let X be a smooth compactification of a homogeneous space of a linear algebraic group G over a number field k. We establish the conjecture of Colliot-Thélène, Sansuc, Kato and Saito on the image of the Chow group of zero-cycles of X in the product of the same groups over all the completions of k. When G is semisimple and simply connected and the geometric stabiliser is finite and supersolvable, we show that rational points of X are dense in the Brauer-Manin set. For finite supersolvable groups, in particular for finite nilpotent groups, this yields a new proof of Shafarevich's theorem on the i…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic 0 and let $K$ be the function field of a smooth projective geometrically integral $k$-curve $X$. Let $T$ be a $K$-torus. In this article, we aim at studying the space of adelic points $T(S,\mathbb{A}_K)$ of $T$ outside a finite set $S$ of closed points of $X$. We start by proving that the group $T(K)$ of rational points of $T$ is always discrete (hence closed) in $T(S,\mathbb{A}_K)$. We then describe the quotient $T(\emptyset,\mathbb{A}_K)/T(K)$ in each of the following three cases: $k$ is an algebraically closed field, $k$ is the field of Laurent series $\…
We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of points of bounded height on a singular hypersurface of the triprojective space. We will see that the final result is in accordance with Batyrev-Manin conjecture. We construct in a Sonine Space of entire functions a subspace related to the Riemann zeta function and we show that the quotient contains vectors intrinsically attached to the non-trivial zeros and their multiplicities.
We prove Batyrev/Manin conjecture for the number of points of bounded height on some smooth hypersurfaces of the triprojective space of tridegree (1,1,1). The constant appearing in the final result is the one conjectured by Peyre. The method used is the one developped by Schindler to study the case of hypersurfaces of biprojective spaces. We pr…
Let $X=\mathcal{M}(A)$ be an affinoid space and let $f,g \in A$. We study the sets of connected components of the spaces defined by an inequality of the form $|f|\le r|g|$, with $r\ge 0$. We prove that there exists a finite partition of $\mathbb{R}_+$ into intervals where those sets are canonically in bijection and that the bounds of those intervals belong to $\sqrt{ρ(A)}$.
In this article, we determine the trace of some Hecke operators on the spaces of level one automorphic forms on the special orthogonal groups of the euclidean lattices $\mathrm{E}_7$, $\mathrm{E}_8$ and $\mathrm{E}_8\oplus \mathrm{A}_1$, with arbitrary weight. Using Arthur's theory, we deduce properties of the Satake parameters of the automorphic representations for the linear groups discovered by Chenevier and Renard. Our results corroborate a conjecture by Bergström, Faber and van der Geer about the Hasse-Weil zeta function on the moduli spaces of $17$-pointed curves of genus $3$.
In this article, we give an explicit description of the invertible functions on the Drinfeld symmetric space over $K$ a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$. We identify them with some distribution spaces over the profinite set of $K$-rationnal points of the projective space. The strategy consists of constructing a map from these distributions to the invertible functions following the methods of Schneider-Stuhler, Iovita-Spiess, de Shalit. We show that it is compatible with the isomorphisms they constructed to compute étale and de Rham cohomology in degree $1$ and that this property forces our d…
Let X be a smooth and proper variety over a number field k. Conjectures on the image of the Chow group of zero-cycles of X in the product of the corresponding groups over all completions of k were put forward by Colliot-Thélène, Kato and Saito. An integer may be represented by a quadratic form over each ring of p-adic integers and over the reals without being represented by this quadratic form over the integers. More generally, such failure of a local-global principle may occur for the representation of one integral quadratic form by another integral quadratic form. We show that many such examples may be accounted for by a Brauer-Manin obstruction for the existence of integral points on schemes defined over the integers. For several types of homogeneous spaces of linear algebraic groups, this obstruction is shown to be the only obstr…

We introduce a new class of adelic heights on the projective line. We estimate their essential minimum and prove a result of equidistribution (at every place) for points of small height with estimates on the speed of convergence. To each rational function R in one variable and defined over a number field K, is associated a normalized height on the algebraic closure of K. We show that these dynamically defined heights are adelic in our sense, and deduce from this equidistribution results for preimages of points under R at every place of K. Our approach follows that of Bilu, and relies on potent…
