We consider Nambu-Poisson 3-algebras on three dimensional manifolds $ {\cal M}_{3} $, such as the Euclidean 3-space $R^{3}$, the 3-sphere $S^{3}$ as well as the 3-torus $T^{3}$. We demonstrate that in the Clebsch-Monge gauge, the Lie algebra of volume preserving diffeomorphisms $SDiff({\cal M}_{3})$ is identical to the Nambu-Poisson algebra on ${\cal M}_{3}$. Moreover the fundamental identity for the Nambu 3-bracket is just the commutation relation of $ SDiff({\cal M}_{3})$. We propose a quantization prescription for the Nambu-Poisson algebra which provides us with the correct classical limit. As such it possesses all of the expected classical properties constituting, in effect, a concrete representation of Nambu-Lie 3-algebras.
We investigate the geometric interpretation of quantized Nambu-Poisson structures in terms of noncommutative geometries. We describe an extension of the usual axioms of quantization in which classical Nambu-Poisson structures are translated to n-Lie algebras at quantum level. We demonstrate that this generalized procedure matches an extension of Berezin-Toeplitz quantization yielding quantized spheres, hyperboloids, and superspheres. The extended Berezin quantization of spheres is closely related to a deformation quantization of n-Lie algebras, as well as the approach based on harmonic analysi…
In spacetime dimensions larger than 2, whenever a global symmetry G is spontaneously broken to a subgroup H, and G and H are Lie groups, there are Nambu-Goldstone modes described by fields with values in G/H. In two-dimensional spacetimes as well, models where fields take values in G/H are of considerable interest even though in that case there is no spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries. We consider such models when the world sheet is a two-sphere and describe their fuzzy analogues for G=SU(N+1), H=S(U(N-1)xU(1)) ~ U(N) and G/H=CP^N. More generally our methods give fuzzy versions of c…
The $SO(5)$ Landau model is the mathematical platform of the 4D quantum Hall effect and provide a rare opportunity for a physical realization of the fuzzy four-sphere. We present an integrated analysis of the $SO(5)$ Landau models and the associated matrix geometries through the Landau level projection. With the $SO(5)$ monopole harmonics, we explicitly derive matrix geometry of a four-sphere in any Landau level: In the lowest Landau level the matrix coordinates are given by the generalized $SO(5)$ gamma matrices of the fuzzy four-sphere satisfying the quantum Nambu algebra, while in higher La…
We propose generalized quantization axioms for Nambu-Poisson manifolds, which allow for a geometric interpretation of n-Lie algebras and their enveloping algebras. We illustrate these axioms by describing extensions of Berezin-Toeplitz quantization to produce various examples of quantum spaces of relevance to the dynamics of M-branes, such as fuzzy spheres in diverse dimensions. We briefly describe preliminary steps towards making the notion of quantized 2-plectic manifolds rigorous by extending the groupoid approach to quantization of symplectic manifolds.
We present a procedure to construct (n+1)-Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras from n-Hom-Nambu-Lie algebras equipped with a generalized trace function. It turns out that the implications of the compatibility conditions, that are necessary for this construction, can be understood in terms of the kernel of the trace function and the range of the twisting maps. Furthermore, we investigate the possibility of defining (n+k)-Lie algebras from n-Lie algebras and a k-form satisfying certain conditions.
We consider dimensional reduction of the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory to a zero-dimensional 3-Lie algebra model and construct various stable solutions corresponding to quantized Nambu-Poisson manifolds. A recently proposed Higgs mechanism reduces this model to the IKKT matrix model. We find that in the strong coupling limit, our solutions correspond to ordinary noncommutative spaces arising as stable solutions in the IKKT model with D-brane backgrounds. In particular, this happens for S^3, R^3 and five-dimensional Neveu-Schwarz Hpp-waves. We expand our model around these backgrounds and fi…
We present two dimensional sigma model by using the Nambu structure on a manifold in general, and on a Lie group as a special case. Then, we consider model constructed from Nambu structure of order three and obtain conditions under which this model is equivalent to a WZW model. Furthermore, we present an example for this case on the four dimensional Heisenberg Lie group. Finally, as another example we show that the model constructed with Nambu structure of order three on the central extension of the 2D Poincare Lie group is integrable.
1-loop vacuum energies of (fuzzy) spacetimes from a supersymmetric reduced model with Filippov 3-algebra are discussed. A_{2,2} algebra, Nambu-Poisson algebra in flat spacetime, and a Lorentzian 3-algebra are examined as 3-algebras.
We give a definition and study Hopf structures in ternary (and n-ary) Nambu-Lie algebra. The fundamental concepts of 3-coalgebra, 3-bialgebra and Hopf 3- algebra are introduced. Some examples of Hopf structures are analyzed.
We propose a recipe to construct matrix representations of Nambu--Lie 3-algebras in terms of irreducible representations of underlying Lie algebra. The case of Euclidean four-dimensional 3-algebra is considered in details. We find that representations of this 3-algebra are not possible in terms of only Hermitian matrices in spite of its Euclidean nature.
We construct the graded triple Lie commutator of cubic supermatrices, which we call the quantum super Nambu bracket of cubic supermatrices, and prove that it satisfies the graded Filippov-Jacobi identity of 3-Lie superalgebra. For this purpose we use the basic notions of the calculus of 3-dimensional matrices, define the Z_2-graded (or super) structure of a cubic matrix relative to one of the directions of a cubic matrix and the super trace of a cubic supermatrix. Making use of the super trace of a cubic supermatrix we introduce the triple product of cubic supermatrices and find the identities…
We propose a novel prescription to take off the square root of Nambu-Goto action for a p-brane, which generalizes the Brink-Di Vecchia-Howe-Tucker or also known as Polyakov method. With an arbitrary decomposition as d+n=p+1, our resulting action is a modified d-dimensional Polyakov action which is gauged and possesses a Nambu n-bracket squared potential. We first spell out how the (p+1)-dimensional diffeomorphism is realized in the lower dimensional action. Then we discuss a possible gauge fixing of it to a direct product of $d$-dimensional diffeomorphism and n-dimensional volume preserving di…
Nonlinear generalization of the Dirac equation extending the standard paradigm of nonlinear Hamiltonians is discussed. ``Faster-than-light telegraphs" are absent for all theories formulated within the new framework. A new metric for infinite dimensional Lie algebras associated with Lie-Poisson dynamics is introduced.
We consider the Lie group $\mathbb{R}^D_κ$ generated by the Lie algebra of $κ$-Minkowski space. Imposing the invariance of the metric under the pull-back of diffeomorphisms induced by right translations in the group, we show that a unique right invariant metric is associated with $\mathbb{R}^D_κ$. This metric coincides with the metric of de Sitter space-time. We analyze the structure of unitary representations of the group $\mathbb{R}^D_κ$ relevant for the realization of the non-commutative $κ$-Minkowski space by embedding into $(2D-1)$-dimensional Heisenberg algebra. Using a suitable set of g…
We propose a new theory of higher spin gravity in three spacetime dimensions. This is defined by what we will call a Nambu-Chern-Simons (NCS) action; this is to a Nambu 3-algebra as an ordinary Chern-Simons (CS) action is to a Lie (2-)algebra. The novelty is that the gauge group of this theory is simple; this stands in contrast to previously understood interacting 3D higher spin theories in the frame-like formalism. We also consider the $N=8$ supersymmetric NCS-matter model (BLG theory), where the NCS action originated: Its fully supersymmetric M2 brane configurations are interpreted as Hopf f…
In this article we give a concise review of recent progress in our understanding of the Lie 3-algebra and their application to the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson model describing multiple M2-branes in M theory.
Fuzzy spaces are obtained by quantizing adjoint orbits of compact semi-simple Lie groups. Fuzzy spheres emerge from quantizing S^2 and are associated with the group SU(2) in this manner. They are useful for regularizing quantum field theories and modeling spacetimes by non-commutative manifolds. We show that fuzzy spaces are Hopf algebras and in fact have more structure than the latter. They are thus candidates for quantum symmetries. Using their generalized Hopf algebraic structures, we can also model processes where one fuzzy space splits into several fuzzy spaces. For example we can discuss…
A dynamical fuzzy space might be described in terms of a dynamical three-index variable C_{ab}^c, which determines the algebraic relations f_a f_b =C_{ab}^c f_c of the functions f_a on a fuzzy space. A fuzzy analogue of the general coordinate transformation would be given by the general linear transformation on f_a. The solutions to the invariant equations of motion of C_{ab}^c can be generally constructed from the invariant tensors of Lie groups. Euclidean models the actions of which are bounded from below are introduced. Lie group symmetric solutions to a class of Euclidean model are obtaine…
By extending the algebraic description of the bosonic rank-three tensor models, a general framework for super rank-three tensor models and correspondence to super fuzzy spaces is proposed. The corresponding super fuzzy spaces must satisfy a certain cyclicity condition on the algebras of functions on them. Due to the cyclicity condition, the symmetry of the super rank-three tensor models are represented by super n-ary transformations. The Leibnitz rules and the fundamental identities for the super n-ary transformations are discussed from the perspective of the symmetry of the algebra of a fuzzy…
We present an explicit matrix algebra quantization of the algebra of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the $n$-torus. That is, we approximate the corresponding classical Nambu brackets using $\mathfrak{sl}(N^{\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil},\mathbb{C})$-matrices equipped with the finite bracket given by the completely anti-symmetrized matrix product, such that the classical brackets are retrieved in the $N\rightarrow \infty$ limit. We then apply this approximation to the super $4$-brane in $9$ dimensions and give a regularized action in analogy with the matrix quantization of the supermembrane. Th…
It will be shown that the defining relations for fuzzy torus and deformed (squashed) sphere proposed by J. Arnlind, et al (hep-th/0602290) (ABHHS) can be rewriten as a new algebra which contains q-deformed commutators. The quantum parameter q (|q|=1) is a function of \hbar. It is shown that the q -> 1 limit of the algebra with the parameter μ<0 describes fuzzy S^2 and that the squashed S^2 with q \neq 1 and μ<0 can be regarded as a new kind of quantum S^2. Throughout the paper the value of the invariant of the algebra, which defines the constraint for the surfaces, is not restricted to be 1. T…
We show that there exists a cut-off version of Nambu-Poisson bracket which defines a finite dimensional Lie 3-algebra. The algebra still satisfies the fundamental identity and thus produces N=8 supersymmetric BLG type equation of motion for multiple M2 branes. By counting the number of the moduli and the degree of freedom, we derive an entropy formula which scales as N^{3/2} as expected for the multiple M2 branes.
M-branes are related to theories on function spaces $\cal{A}$ involving M-linear non-commutative maps from $\cal{A} \times \cdots \times \cal{A}$ to $\cal{A}$. While the Lie-symmetry-algebra of volume preserving diffeomorphisms of $T^M$ cannot be deformed when M>2, the arising M-algebras naturally relate to Nambu's generalisation of Hamiltonian mechanics, e.g. by providing a representation of the canonical M-commutation relations, $[J_1,\cdots, J_M]=i\hbar$. Concerning multidimensional integrability, an important generalisation of Lax-pairs is given.
Tensor models are the generalization of matrix models, and are studied as models of quantum gravity in general dimensions. In this paper, I discuss the algebraic structure in the fuzzy space interpretation of the tensor models which have a tensor with three indices as its only dynamical variable. The algebraic structure is studied mainly from the perspective of 3-ary algebras. It is shown that the tensor models have algebraic expressions, and that their symmetries are represented by 3-ary algebras. It is also shown that the 3-ary algebras of coordinates, which appear in the nonassociative fuzz…
By using the recently proposed prescription arXiv:0804.3629 for obtaining the $M5$ brane action from multiple $M2$ branes action in BLG theory, we examine such transition when 11 Dimensional background antisymmetric fluxes couple to the $M2$ brane world volume. Such couplings was suggested in arXiv:0805.3427 where it was used the fact that various fields in BLG theory are valued in a Lie 3-algebra. We argue that this action and promoting it by Nambu-Poisson bracket gives the expected coupling of fluxes with $M5$ brane at least at weak coupling limit. We also study some other aspects of the act…
One of the most important questions in the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson (BLG) theory of multiple M2-branes is the choice of the Lie 3-algebra. The Lie 3-algebra should be chosen such that the corresponding BLG model is unitary and admits fuzzy 3-sphere as a solution. In this paper we propose another new condition: the Lie 3-algebras of use must be connected to the semisimple Lie algebras describing the gauge symmetry of D-branes via a certain reduction condition. We show that this reduction condition leads to a natural generalization of the Cartan-Weyl 3-algebras introduced in arXiv:1004.1397. Si…
This paper reviews the properties and applications of certain n-ary generalizations of Lie algebras in a self-contained and unified way. These generalizations are algebraic structures in which the two entries Lie bracket has been replaced by a bracket with n entries. Each type of n-ary bracket satisfies a specific characteristic identity which plays the rôle of the Jacobi identity for Lie algebras. Particular attention will be paid to generalized Lie algebras, which are defined by even multibrackets obtained by antisymmetrizing the associative products of its n components and that satisfy the …
The equation of motion for comohogeneity-one Nambu-Goto strings in flat space $\mathbb{R}^{n,1}$ has been investigated. We first classify possible forms of the Killing vector fields in $\mathbb{R}^{n,1}$ after appropriate action of the Poincaré group. Then, all possible forms of the Hamiltonian for the cohomogeneity-one Nambu-Goto strings are determined. It has been shown that the system always has the maximum number of functionally independent, pair-wise commuting conserved quantities, i.e. it is completely integrable. We have also determined all the possible coordinate forms of the Killing v…
``Fuzzy CP^2'', which is a four-dimensional fuzzy manifold extension of the well-known fuzzy analogous to the fuzzy 2-sphere (S^2), appears as a classical solution in the dimensionally reduced 8d Yang-Mills model with a cubic term involving the structure constant of the SU(3) Lie algebra. Although the fuzzy S^2, which is also a classical solution of the same model, has actually smaller free energy than the fuzzy CP^2, Monte Carlo simulation shows that the fuzzy CP^2 is stable even nonperturbatively due to the suppression of tunneling effects at large N as far as the coefficient of the cubic te…
We consider the 3-Lie algebra induced by a Lie algebra with the help of an analog of a trace. We propose the extension of the Weil algebra of a Lie algebra to the Weil algebra of induced 3-Lie algebra by introducing in addition to an analog of connection and its curvature new elements and defining their differential by means of structure constants of 3-Lie algebra. We also propose a new approach to the universal B.R.S. algebra based on the quantum triple Nambu bracket.
Gauge symmetry based on Lie algebra has a rather long history and it successfully describes electromagnetism, weak and strong interactions in the nature. Recently the Filippov-Nambu 3-algebras have been in the focus of interest since they appear as gauge symmetries of new superconformal Chern-Simons non-Abelian theories in 2 + 1 dimensions with the maximum allowed number of N = 8 linear supersymmetries. These theories explore the low energy dynamics of the microscopic degrees of freedom of coincident M2 branes and constitute the boundary conformal field theories of the bulk AdS4 / S7 exact 11-…
We consider a non-supersymmetric domain-wall version of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM theory where five out of the six scalar fields have non-zero classical values on one side of a wall of codimension one. The classical fields have commutators which constitute an irreducible representation of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{so}(5)$ leading to a highly non-trivial mixing between color and flavor components of the quantum fields. Making use of fuzzy spherical harmonics on $S^4$, we explicitly solve the mixing problem and derive not only the spectrum of excitations at the quantum level but also the propagator…
Motivated by the recent proposal of an N=8 supersymmetric action for multiple M2-branes, we study the Lie 3-algebra in detail. In particular, we focus on the fundamental identity and the relation with Nambu-Poisson bracket. Some new algebras not known in the literature are found. Next we consider cubic matrix representations of Lie 3-algebras. We show how to obtain higher dimensional representations by tensor products for a generic 3-algebra. A criterion of reducibility is presented. We also discuss the application of Lie 3-algebra to the membrane physics, including the Basu-Harvey equation an…
Recently an action based on Lie 3-algebras was proposed to describe M2-branes. We study the case of infinite dimensional Lie 3-algebras based on the Nambu-Poisson structure of three dimensional manifolds. We show that the model contains self-dual 2-form gauge fields in 6 dimensions, and the result may be interpreted as the M5-brane world-volume action.

We describe the basic properties of two n-ary algebras, the Generalized Lie Algebras (GLAs) and, particularly, the Filippov (or n-Lie) algebras (FAs), and comment on their n-ary Poisson counterparts, the Generalized Poisson (GP) and Nambu-Poisson (N-P) structures. We describe the Filippov algebra cohomology relevant for the central extensions and infinitesimal deformations of FAs. It is seen that semisimple FAs do not admit central extensions and, moreover, that they are rigid. This extends the familiar Whitehead's lemma to all $n\geq 2$ FAs, n=2 being the standard Lie algebra case. When the n…
The Poisson algebra $\mathfrak h$ of invariants of the Nambu-Goto string, which was first introduced by K. Pohlmeyer in 1982, is described using the Shuffle Hopf algebra. In particular, an underlying auxiliary Lie algebra is reformulated in terms of the image of the first Eulerian idempotent of the Shuffle Hopf algebra. This facilitates the comparison of different approaches to the quantization of $\mathfrak h$.
We continue our study of zero-dimensional field theories in which the fields take values in a strong homotopy Lie algebra. In a first part, we review in detail how higher Chern-Simons theories arise in the AKSZ-formalism. These theories form a universal starting point for the construction of $L_\infty$-algebra models. We then show how to describe superconformal field theories and how to perform dimensional reductions in this context. In a second part, we demonstrate that Nambu-Poisson and multisymplectic manifolds are closely related via their Heisenberg algebras. As a byproduct of our discuss…
In this dissertation the Weyl-Wigner approach is presented as a map between functions on a real cartesian symplectic vector space and a set of operators on a Hilbert space, to analyse some aspects of the relations between quantum and classical formalism, both as a quantization, and as a classical limit. It is presented an extension of this formalism to the case of a more general classical phase space, namely one whose configuration space is a compact simple Lie group. In the second part, it is used to develop a fuzzy approximation to the algebra of functions on a disc. This is the first exampl…
We start with an $SU(\cal {N})$ Yang-Mills theory on a manifold ${\cal M}$, suitably coupled to two distinct set of scalar fields in the adjoint representation of $SU({\cal N})$, which are forming a doublet and a triplet, respectively under a global $SU(2)$ symmetry. We show that a direct sum of fuzzy spheres $S_F^{2 \, Int} := S_F^2(\ell) \oplus S_F^2 (\ell) \oplus S_F^2 \left ( \ell + \frac{1}{2} \right ) \oplus S_F^2 \left ( \ell - \frac{1}{2} \right )$ emerges as the vacuum solution after the spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry and lay the way for us to interpret the spontaneously b…
A study of the relation between topology change, energy and Lie algebra representations for fuzzy geometry in connection to $M$-theory is presented. We encounter two different types of topology change, related to the different features of the Lie algebra representations appearing in the matrix models of $M$-theory. From these studies, we propose a new method of obtaining non-commutative solutions for the non-Abelian $D$-brane action found by Myers. This mechanism excludes one of the two topology changing processes previously found in other non-commutative solutions of many matrix-based models …
A family of algebras $\mathcal{E}_n$ that extends the Lie algebra of the Drinfel'd double is proposed. This allows us to systematically construct the generalized frame fields $E_A{}^I$ which realize the proposed algebra by means of the generalized Lie derivative, i.e., $\hat{\mathcal{L}}_{E_A}E_B{}^I = - \mathcal{F}_{AB}{}^C\,E_C{}^I$. By construction, the generalized frame fields include a twist by a Nambu-Poisson tensor. A possible application to the non-Abelian extension of U-duality and a generalization of the Yang-Baxter deformation are also discussed.
