The aim of the present paper is to obtain a Sjölin-type maximal estimate for pseudo-differential operators with homogeneous symbols. The crux of the proof is to obtain a phase decomposition formula which does not involve the time traslation. The proof is somehow parallel to the paper by Pramanik and Terwilleger (P. Malabika and E. Terwilleger, A weak $L^2$ estimate for a maximal dyadic sum operator on $R^n$, Illinois J. Math, {\bf 47} (2003), no. 3, 775--813). In the present paper, we mainly concentrate on our new phase decomposition formula and the results in the Cotlar type estimate, which are different from the ones by Pramanik and Terwilleger.
We obtain weighted $L^p$ inequalities for pseudo-differential operators with smooth symbols and their commutators by using a class of new weight functions which include Muckenhoupt weight functions. Our results improve essentially some well-known results.
Following previous works for the unit ball, we define quasi-radial pseudo-homogeneous symbols on the projective space and obtain the corresponding commutativity results for Toeplitz operators. A geometric interpretation of these symbols in terms of moment maps is developed. This leads us to the introduction of a new family of symbols, extended pseudo-homogeneous, that provide larger commutative Banach algebras generated by Toeplitz operators. This family of symbols provides new commutative Banach algebras generated by Toeplitz operators on the unit ball.
Motivated by the problem of channel estimation in wireless communications, we derive a reconstruction formula for pseudodifferential operators with a bandlimited symbol. This reconstruction formula uses the diagonal entries of the matrix of the pseudodifferential operator with respect to a Gabor system. In addition, we prove several other uniqueness theorems that shed light on the relation between a pseudodifferential operators and its matrix with respect to a Gabor system.
In this article, we study pseudo-differential equations involving semi-quasielliptic symbols over p-adics. We determine the function spaces where such equations have solutions. We introduce the space of infinitely pseudo-differentiable functions with respect to a semi-quasielliptic operator. By using these spaces we show the existence of a regularization effect for certain parabolic equations over p-adics.
We consider bilinear pseudo-differential operators whose symbols posses Gevrey type regularity and may have a sub-exponential growth at infinity, together with all their derivatives. It is proved that those symbol classes can be described by the means of the short-time Fourier transform and modulation spaces. Our first main result is the invariance property of the corresponding bilinear operators. Furthermore we prove the continuity of such operators when acting on modulation spaces. As a consequence, we derive their continuity on anisotropic Gelfand-Shilov type spaces. We consider both Beurli…
This paper provides sufficient conditions for the boundedness of Weyl operators on modulation spaces. The Weyl symbols belong to Wiener amalgam spaces, or generalized modulation spaces, as recently renamed by their inventor Hans Feichtinger. This is the first result which relates symbols in Wiener amalgam spaces to operators acting on classical modulation spaces.
In this paper, we introduce and study a class of pseudo-differential operators on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^n$. More preciously, we consider a weighted symbol class $M_{ρ, Λ}^m(\mathbb{ Z}^n\times \mathbb{T}^n), m\in \mathbb{R}$ associated to a suitable weight function $Λ$ on $\mathbb{ Z }^n$. We study elements of the symbolic calculus for pseudo-differential operators associated with $M_{ρ, Λ}^m(\mathbb{ Z}^n\times \mathbb{T}^n)$ by deriving formulae for the composition, adjoint, transpose. We define the notion of $M$-ellipticity for symbols belonging to $M_{ρ, Λ}^m(\mathbb{ Z}^n\times \mathbb{…
We give sufficient conditions on the Lebesgue exponents for compositions of odd numbers of pseudo-differential operators with symbols in modulation spaces. As a byproduct, we obtain sufficient conditions for twisted convolutions of odd numbers of factors to be bounded on Wiener amalgam spaces.
In this paper we focus on the almost-diagonalization properties of $τ$-pseudodifferential operators using techniques from time-frequency analysis. Our function spaces are modulation spaces and the special class of Wiener amalgam spaces arising by considering the action of the Fourier transform of modulation spaces. A particular example is provided by the Sjöstrand class, for which Gröchenig exhibited the almost diagonalization of Weyl operators. We shall show that such result can be extended to any $τ$-pseudodifferential operator, for $τ\in [0,1]$, also with symbol in weighted Wiener amalgam s…
We establish continuity and Schatten-von Neumann properties for matrix operators with matrices satisfying mixed quasi-norm estimates. These considerations also include the case when the Lebesgue and Schatten parameters are allowed to stay between $0$ and $1$. We use the results to deduce continuity and Schatten-von Neumann properties for pseudo-differential operators with symbols in a broad class of modulation spaces.
The first part of the paper is devoted to the $G$-type spaces i.e. the spaces $G^α_α(\mathbb R^d_+)$, $α\geq 1$ and their duals which can be described as analogous to the Gelfand-Shilov spaces and their duals but with completely new justification of obtained results. The Laguerre type expansions of the elements in $G^α_α(\mathbb R^d_+)$, $α\geq 1$ and their duals characterise these spaces through the exponential and sub-exponential growth of coefficients. We provide the full topological description and by the nuclearity of $G_α^α(\mathbb{R}^d_+)$, $α\geq 1$ the kernel theorem is proved. The se…
We consider the Cauchy problem for a hyperbolic pseudodifferential operator whose symbol is generalized, resembling a representative of a Colombeau generalized function. Such equations arise, for example, after a reduction-decoupling of second-order model systems of differential equations in seismology. We prove existence of a unique generalized solution under log-type growth conditions on the symbol, thereby extending known results for the case of differential operators with generalized functions as coefficients.
We consider here pseudo-differential operators whose symbol $σ(x,ξ)$ is not infinitely smooth with respect to $x$. Decomposing such symbols into four -sometimes five- components and using tools of paradifferential calculus, we derive sharp estimates on the action of such pseudo-differential operators on Sobolev spaces and give explicit expressions for their operator norm in terms of the symbol $σ(x,ξ)$. We also study commutator estimates involving such operators, and generalize or improve the so-called Kato-Ponce and Calderon-Coifman-Meyer estimates in various ways.
In this paper we use Riesz spectral Theory and Gershgorin Theory to obtain explicit information concerning the spectrum of pseudo-differential operators defined on the unit circle $\mathbb{T} := \mathbb{R}/ 2 π\mathbb{ Z}$. For symbols in the Hörmander class $S^m_{1 , 0} (\mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{Z})$, we provide a sufficient and necessary condition to ensure that the corresponding pseudo-differential operator is a Riesz operator in $L^p (\mathbb{T})$, $1< p < \infty$, extending in this way compact operators characterisation and Ghoberg's lemma to $L^p (\mathbb{T})$. We provide an example of …
On the weakly pseudo-convex domains $Ω_p^n$ we introduce quasi-homogeneous quasi-radial symbols. These are used to prove the existence of a commutative Banach algebra of Toeplitz operators on Bergman space of $Ω_p^n$. We also show that group theoretic and geometric properties for our symbols are satisfied. The results presented here contain the geometric description of the symbols introduced by N. Vasilevski for the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n$.
In this paper, we study harmonic analysis on the affine Poincaré group $\mathcal{P}_{aff}$, which is a non-unimodular group, and obtain pseudo-differential operators with operator valued symbols. More precisely, we study the boundedness properties of pseudo-differential operators on $\mathcal{P}_{aff}$. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition on the operator-valued symbols such that the corresponding pseudo-differential operators are in the class of Hilbert--Schmidt operators. Consequently, we obtain a characterization of the trace class pseudo-differential operators on the Poinca…
In this work, we develop $L^p$ boundedness theory for pseudodifferential operators with rough (not even continuous in general) symbols in the $x$ variable. Moreover, the $B(L^p)$ operator norms are estimated explicitly in terms of scale invariant quantities involving the symbols. All the estimates are shown to be sharp with respect to the required smoothness in the $ξ$ variable. As a corollary, we obtain $L^p$ bounds for (smoothed out versions of) the maximal directional Hilbert transform and the Carleson operator.
In this paper, we study the boundedness of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in the Hörmander class $S^0_{ρ,ρ}$ on $α$-modulation spaces $M_{p,q}^{s,α}$, and consider the relation between $α$ and $ρ$. In particular, we show that pseudodifferential operators with symbols in $S^0_{α,α}$ are bounded on all $α$-modulation spaces $M^{s,α}_{p,q}$, for arbitrary $s\in\mathbb{R}$ and for the whole range of exponents $0 < p,q \leq \infty$.
Let $\x$ be the homogeneous tree of degree $q+1~(q\geq2)$. In this article, we present symbolic criteria for boundedness of pseudo-differential operators on homogeneous tree $\x$. A sufficient condition for weak type $(p, q)$ boundedness is also given. We present necessary and sufficient conditions on the symbols $σ$ such that the corresponding pseudo-differential operators $T_σ$ from $L^{p_1} (\x)$ into $L^{p_2} (\x)$ to be nuclear for $1\leq p_1, p_2<\infty$. We show that the adjoint of the nuclear operator from $L^{p_2'}(\x)$ into $L^{p_1'}(\x)$ is again a nuclear operator. Explicit formula…
We investigate pseudodifferential operators on arbitrary locally compact abelian groups. As symbol classes for the Kohn-Nirenberg calculus we introduce a version of Sjoestrand's class. Pseudodifferential operators with such symbols form a Banach algebra that is closed under inversion. Since "hard analysis" techniques are not available on locally compact abelian groups, a new time-frequency approach is used with the emphasis on modulation spaces, Gabor frames, and Banach algebras of matrices. Sjoestrand's original results are thus understood as a phenomenon of abstract harmonic analysis rather …
Given a compact (Hausdorff) group $G$ and a closed subgroup $H$ of $G,$ in this paper we present symbolic criteria for pseudo-differential operators on compact homogeneous space $G/H$ characterizing the Schatten-von Neumann classes $S_r(L^2(G/H))$ for all $0<r \leq \infty.$ We go on to provide a symbolic characterization for $r$-nuclear, $0< r \leq 1,$ pseudo-differential operators on $L^{p}(G/H)$-space with applications to adjoint, product and trace formulae. The criteria here are given in terms of the concept of matrix-valued symbols defined on noncommutative analogue of phase space $G/H \ti…
In this paper we introduce and study pseudo-differential operators with operator valued symbols on the abstract Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}(G):=G \times \widehat{G} \times \mathbb{T},$ where $G$ a locally compact abelian group with its dual group $\widehat{G}$. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition on symbols for which these operators are in the class of Hilbert-Schmidt operators. As a key step in proving this we derive a trace formula for the trace class $j$-Weyl transform, $j \in \mathbb{Z}^*$ with symbols in $L^{2}(G\times \widehat{G}).$ We go on to present a characterization of t…
We consider global pseudodifferential operators on symmetric spaces of noncompact type, defined using spherical functions. The associated symbols have a natural probabilistic form that extend the notion of the characteristic exponent appearing in Gangolli's Lévy-Khinchine formula to a function of two variables. The Hille-Yosida-Ray theorem is used to obtain conditions on such a symbol so that the corresponding pseudodifferential operator has an extension that generates a sub-Feller semigroup, generalising existing results for Euclidean space.
In this paper, we study elements of symbolic calculus for pseudo-differential operators associated with the weighted symbol class $M_{ρ, Λ}^m(\mathbb{ T}\times \mathbb{Z})$ (associated to a suitable weight function $Λ$ on $\mathbb{Z}$) by deriving formulae for the asymptotic sums, composition, adjoint, transpose. We also construct the parametrix of $M$-elliptic pseudo-differential operators on $\mathbb{ T}$. Further, we prove a version of Gohberg's lemma for pseudo-differetial operators with weighted symbol class $M_{ρ, Λ}^0(\mathbb{ T}\times \mathbb{Z})$ and as an application, we provide a su…
In this review we focus on the almost diagonalization of pseudodifferential operators and highlight the advantages that time-frequency techniques provide here. In particular, we retrace the steps of an insightful paper by Gröchenig, who succeeded in characterizing a class of symbols previously investigated by Seöstrand by noticing that Gabor frames almost diagonalize the corresponding Weyl operators. This approach also allows to give new and more natural proofs of related results such as boundedness of operators or algebra and Wiener properties of the symbol class. Then, we discuss some recent…
We apply Shubin's theory of global symbol classes $Γ_ρ^{m}$ to the Born-Jordan pseudodifferential calculus we have previously developed. This approach has many conceptual advantages, and makes the relationship between the conflicting Born-Jordan and Weyl quantization methods much more limpid. We give, in particular, precise asymptotic expansions of symbols allowing to pass from Born-Jordan quantization to Weyl quantization, and vice-versa. In addition we state and prove some regularity and global hypoellipticity results.
Let $Ω$ be a bounded pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb{C}^2$ with Lipschitz boundary or a bounded convex domain in $\mathbb{C}^n$ and $ϕ\in C(\overlineΩ)$ such that $H_ϕ$ is compact on $A^2(Ω)$. Then $ϕ\circ f$ is holomorphic for any holomorphic $f:\mathbb{D}\rightarrow bΩ$.
We study the link between pseudo-differential operators and Wick operators via the Bargmann transform. We deduce a formula for the symbol of the Wick operator in terms of the short-time Fourier transform of the Weyl symbol. This gives characterizations of Wick symbols of pseudo-differential operators of Shubin type and of infinite order, and results on composition. We prove a series expansion of Wick operators in anti-Wick operators which leads to a sharp Gårding inequality and transition of hypoellipticity between Wick and and Shubin symbols. Finally we show continuity results for anti-Wick o…
In this work we give Hölder-Besov estimates for periodic Fourier multipliers. We present a class of bounded pseudo-differential operators on periodic Besov spaces with symbols of limited regularity.
We investigate a new representation of general operators by means of sums of shifted Gabor multipliers. These representations arise by studying the matrix of an operator with respect to a Gabor frame. Each shifted Gabor multiplier corresponds to a side-diagonal of this matrix. This representation is especially useful for operators whose associated matrix possesses some off-diagonal decay. In this case one can completely characterize the symbol class of the operator by the size of the symbols of the Gabor multipliers. As an application we derive approximation theorems for pseudodifferential ope…
We define new symbol classes for pseudodifferntial operators and investigate their pseudodifferential calculus. The symbol classes are parametrized by commutative convolution algebras. To every solid convolution algebra over a lattice we associate a symbol class. Then every operator with such a symbol is almost diagonal with respect to special wave packets (coherent states or Gabor frames), and the rate of almost diagonalization is described precisely by the underlying convolution algebra. Furthermore, the corresponding class of pseudodifferential operators is a Banach algebra of bounded opera…
In this paper we prove sufficient conditions for the Fredholm property of a non-smooth pseudodifferential operator $P$ which symbol is in a Hölder space with respect to the spatial variable. As a main ingredient for the proof we use a suitable symbol-smoothing.
It is shown that an elliptic scattering operator $A$ on a compact manifold with boundary with coefficients in the bounded operators of a bundle of Banach spaces of class (HT) and Pisier's property $(α)$ has maximal regularity (up to a spectral shift), provided that the spectrum of the principal symbol of $A$ on the scattering cotangent bundle of the manifold avoids the right half-plane. This is deduced directly from a Seeley theorem, i.e. the resolvent is represented in terms of pseudodifferential operators with R-bounded symbols, thus showing by an iteration argument the R-boundedness of $λ(A…
Given a separable unital C*algebra $C$, let $E_n$ denote the Hilbert module equal to the completion of the Schwartz space of rapidly decreasing smooth functions from $R^n$ to $C$ equipped with the $C$-valued inner product given by integration. Let $B$ denote the space of all smooth functions with bounded derivatives from $R^n$ to $C$. For each $a$ in $B$, let $O(a)$ denote the pseudodifferential operator of symbol $a$. $O$ maps $B$ to $H$, the set of all adjointable operators on $E_n$ which have smooth orbit under the canonical action of the Heisenberg group. We construct a left inverse for $O…
We present in this paper the construction of a pseudodifferential calculus on smooth non-compact manifolds associated to a globally defined and coordinate independant complete symbol calculus, that generalizes the standard pseudodifferential calculus on $\R^n$. We consider the case of manifolds $M$ with linearization in the sense of Bokobza-Haggiag, such that the associated (abstract) exponential map provides global diffeomorphisms of $M$ with $\R^n$ at any point. Cartan--Hadamard manifolds are special cases of such manifolds. The abstract exponential map encodes a notion of infinity on the ma…
In this paper, we present first results of our investigation regarding symbolic pseudo-differential calculi on nilpotent Lie groups. On any graded Lie group, we define classes of symbols using difference operators. The operators are obtained from these symbols via the natural quantisation given by the representation theory. They form an algebra of operators which shares many properties with the usual Hormander calculus.
In this note we present a symbolic pseudo-differential calculus on the Heisenberg group. We particularise to this group our general construction [4,3,2] of pseudo-differential calculi on graded groups. The relation between the Weyl quantization and the representations of the Heisenberg group enables us to consider here scalar-valued symbols. We find that the conditions defining the symbol classes are similar but different to the ones in [1]. Applications are given to Schwartz hypoellipticity and to subelliptic estimates on the Heisenberg group.
In this paper, we investigate the mapping properties of pseudo-differential operators with operator-valued symbols. Thanks to the smooth atomic decomposition of the operator-valued Triebel-Lizorkin spaces $F_1^{α,c}(\mathbb{R}^d,\mathcal{M})$ obtained in our previous paper, we establish the $F_1^{α,c}$-regularity of regular symbols for every $α\in \mathbb{R}$, and the $F_1^{α,c}$-regularity of forbidden symbols for $α>0$. As applications, we obtain the same results on the usual and quantum tori.
Global quantization of pseudo-differential operators on compact Lie groups is introduced relying on the representation theory of the group rather than on expressions in local coordinates. Operators on the 3-dimensional sphere and on group SU(2) are analysed in detail. A new class of globally defined symbols is introduced giving rise to the usual Hormander's classes of operators $Ψ^m(G)$, $Ψ^m(S^3)$ and $Ψ^m(SU(2))$. Properties of the new class and symbolic calculus are analysed. Properties of symbols as well as $L^2$-boundedness and Sobolev $L^2$--boundedness of operators in this global quanti…
In this paper we give several global characterisations of the Hormander class of pseudo-differential operators on compact Lie groups. The result is applied to give criteria for the ellipticity and the global hypoellipticity of pseudo-differential operators in terms of their matrix-valued full symbols. Several examples of the first and second order globally hypoelliptic differential operators are given. Where the global hypoelliptiticy fails, one can construct explicit examples based on the analysis of the global symbols.
We consider special classes of linear bounded operators in Banach spaces and suggest certain operator variant of symbolic calculus. It permits to formulate an index theorem and to describe Fredholm properties of elliptic pseudo-differential operator on manifolds with non-smooth boundaries.
Smooth pseudodifferential operators on $\mathbb{R}^n$ can be characterized by their mapping properties between $L^p-$Sobolev spaces due to Beals and Ueberberg. In applications such a characterization would also be useful in the non-smooth case, for example to show the regularity of solutions of a partial differential equation. Therefore, we will show that every linear operator $P$, which satisfies some specific continuity assumptions, is a non-smooth pseudodifferential operator of the symbol-class $C^τ S^m_{1,0}(\mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n)$. The main new difficulties are the limited mapp…
Pseudo-differential and Fourier series operators on the n-torus are analyzed by using global representations by Fourier series instead of local representations in coordinate charts. Toroidal symbols are investigated and the correspondence between toroidal and Euclidean symbols of pseudo-differential operators is established. Periodization of operators and hyperbolic partial differential equations is discussed. Fourier series operators, which are analogues of Fourier integral operators on the torus, are introduced, and formulae for their compositions with pseudo-differential operators are deriv…
In this note we describe the commutant of the multiplication operator by a monomial in the Toeplitz algebra of a complete strongly pseudoconvex Reinhardt domain.
We give a complete characterization of the continuity of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in modulation spaces $M^{p,q}$, acting on a given Lebesgue space $L^r$. Namely, we find the full range of triples $(p,q,r)$, for which such a boundedness occurs. More generally, we completely characterize the same problem for operators acting on Wiener amalgam space $W(L^r,L^s)$ and even on modulation spaces $M^{r,s}$. Finally the action of pseudodifferential operators with symbols in $W(\Fur L^1,L^\infty)$ is also investigated.
Consider an h-pseudodifferential operator P, whose symbol extends holomorphically to a tubular neighborhood of the real phase space and converges sufficiently fast to 1, so that the determinant of P is well-defined. We show that the modulus of this determinant is asymptotically bounded by an exponential of the integral of the logarithm of the modulus of the symbol along a certain complex deformation of the real phase space. Since there are many possible such deformations, we get a variational problem. The paper is devoted to the corresponding variational calculus.
Consider an elliptic self-adjoint pseudodifferential operator $A$ acting on $m$-columns of half-densities on a closed manifold $M$, whose principal symbol is assumed to have simple eigenvalues. Relying on a basis of pseudodifferential projections commuting with $A$, we construct an almost-unitary pseudodifferential operator that diagonalizes $A$ modulo an infinitely smoothing operator. We provide an invariant algorithm for the computation of its full symbol, as well as an explicit closed formula for its subprincipal symbol. Finally, we give a quantitative description of the relation between th…
We extend the classical regularity theorem of elliptic operators to maximally hypoelliptic differential operators. More precisely, given vector fields $X_1,\ldots,X_m$ on a smooth manifold which satisfy Hörmander's bracket generating condition, we define a principal symbol for \textit{any} linear differential operator. Our symbol takes into account the vector fields $X_i$ and their commutators. We show that for an arbitrary differential operator, its principal symbol is invertible if and only if the operator is maximally hypoelliptic. This answers affirmatively a conjecture due to Helffer and …
There has recently been evidence for replacing the usual Weyl quantization procedure by the older and much less known Born-Jordan rule. In this paper we discuss this quantization procedure in detail and relate it to recent results of Boggiato, De Donno, and Oliaro on the Cohen class. We begin with a discussion of some properties of Shubin's $τ$-pseudo-differential calculus, which allows us to show that the Born-Jordan quantization of a symbol $a$ is the average for $τ\in\lbrack0,1]$ of the $τ$-operators with symbol $a$. We study the properties of the Born-Jordan operators, including their symp…
We prove continuity results for Fourier integral operators with symbols in modulation spaces, acting between modulation spaces. The phase functions belong to a class of nondegenerate generalized quadratic forms that includes Schrödinger propagators and pseudodifferential operators. As a byproduct we obtain a characterization of all exponents $p,q,r_1,r_2,t_1,t_2 \in [1,\infty]$ of modulation spaces such that a symbol in $M^{p,q}(\mathbb R^{2d})$ gives a pseudodifferential operator that is continuous from $M^{r_1,r_2}(\mathbb R^d)$ into $M^{t_1,t_2}(\mathbb R^d)$.
We study one-parameter families of pseudodifferential operators whose Weyl symbols are obtained by dilation and a smooth deformation of a symbol in a weighted Sjöstrand class. We show that their spectral edges are Lipschitz continuous functions of the dilation or deformation parameter. Suitably local estimates hold also for the edges of every spectral gap. These statements extend Bellissard's seminal results on the Lipschitz continuity of spectral edges for families of operators with periodic symbols to a large class of symbols with only mild regularity assumptions. The abstract results are us…
We are consider domains in cotangent bundles with the property that the null foliation of their boundary is fibrating and the leaves satisfy a Bohr-Sommerfeld condition (for example, the unit disk bundle of a Zoll metric). Given such a domain, we construct an algebra of associated semiclassical pseudodifferential operators with singular symbols. The Schwartz kernels of the operators have frequency set contained in the union of the diagonal and the flow-out of the null foliation of the boundary of the domain. We develop a symbolic calculus, prove the existence of projectors (under a mild additi…
We show that the linear symplectic and anti-symplectic transformations form the maximal covariance group for both the Wigner transform and Weyl operators. The proof is based on a new result from symplectic geometry which characterizes symplectic and anti-symplectic matrices, and which allows us, in addition, to refine a classical result on the preservation of symplectic capacities of ellipsoids.
