We consider the Yangs-Mills equations in 4+1 dimensions. This is the energy critical case and we show that it admits a family of solutions which blow up in finite time. They are obtained by the spherically symmetric ansatz in the SO(4) gauge group and result by rescaling of the instanton solution. The rescaling is done via a prescribed rate which in this case is a modification of the self-similar rate by a power of |log t|. The powers themselves take any value exceeding 3/2 and thus form a continuum of distinct rates leading to blow-up. The methods are related to the authors' previous work on wave maps and the energy critical semi-linear equation. However, in contrast to these equations, the linearized Yang-Mills operator (around an instanton) exhibits a zero energy eigenvalue rather than a resonance. This turns out to have far-reaching consequences, amongst which are a completely different family of rates leading to blow-up (logarithmic rather than polynomial corrections to the self-similar rate).
We exhibit stable finite time blow up regimes for the energy critical co-rotational Wave Map with the S^2 target in all homotopy classes and for the critical equivariant SO(4) Yang-Mills problem. We derive sharp asymptotics on the dynamics at the blow up time and prove quantization of the energy focused at the singularity.
In this paper, we consider the heat flow for Yang-Mills connections on $\mathbb{R}^5 \times SO(5)$. In the $SO(5)-$equivariant setting, the Yang-Mills heat equation reduces to a single semilinear reaction-diffusion equation for which an explicit self-similar blowup solution was found by Weinkove \cite{Wei04}. We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of this solution under small perturbations. In particular, we show that there exists an open set of initial conditions in a suitable topology such that the corresponding solutions blow up in finite time and converge to a non-trivial self-similar…
We consider the Cauchy problem for an energy supercritical nonlinear wave equation that arises in $(1+5)$--dimensional Yang--Mills theory. A certain self--similar solution $W_0$ of this model is conjectured to act as an attractor for generic large data evolutions. Assuming mode stability of $W_0$, we prove a weak version of this conjecture, namely that the self--similar solution $W_0$ is (nonlinearly) stable. Phrased differently, we prove that mode stability of $W_0$ implies its nonlinear stability. The fact that this statement is not vacuous follows from careful numerical work by Bizoń and Ch…
We consider the Yang-Mills equations in $(1+d)$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. It is known that in the supercritical case, i.e., for $d \geq 5$, these equations admit closed form equivariant self-similar blowup solutions \cite{BieBiz15}. These solutions are furthermore conjectured to be the universal attractors for generic large equivariant data evolutions. In this paper we partially prove this conjecture. Namely, we show that for all odd $d \geq 5$ the blowup mechanism exhibited by these solutions is stable.
We study development of singularities for the spherically symmetric Yang-Mills equations in $d+1$ dimensional Minkowski spacetime for $d=4$ (the critical dimension) and $d=5$ (the lowest supercritical dimension). Using combined numerical and analytical methods we show in both cases that generic solutions starting with sufficiently large initial data blow up in finite time. The mechanism of singularity formation depends on the dimension: in $d=5$ the blowup is exactly self-similar while in $d=4$ the blowup is only approximately self-similar and can be viewed as the adiabatic shrinking of the ma…
We consider equivariant wave maps from the $(d+1)$--dimensional Minkowski spacetime into the $d$-sphere for $d\geq 4$. We find a new explicit stable self-similar solution and give numerical evidence that it plays the role of a universal attractor for generic blowup. An analogous result is obtained for the $SO(d)$ symmetric Yang-Mills field for $d\geq 6$.
In this paper, we study the blow-up of a sequence of Yang-Mills connection with bounded energy on a four manifold. We prove a set of equations relating the geometry of the bubble connection at the infinity with the geometry of the limit connection at the energy concentration point. These equations exclude certain scenarios from happening, for example, there is no sequence of Yang-Mills $SU(2)$ connections on $S^4$ converging to an ASD one-instanton while developing a SD one-instanton as a bubble. The proof involves the expansion of connection forms with respect to some Coulomb gauge on long cy…
In this work, we introduce a novel approach to the problem of gauge choice for the Yang-Mills equation on the Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{1+3}$, which uses the Yang-Mills heat flow in a crucial way. As this approach does not possess the drawbacks of the previous approaches, it is expected to be more robust and easily adaptable to other settings. As the first demonstration of the `structure' offered by this new approach, we will give an alternative proof of the local well-posedness of the Yang-Mills equations for initial data in $(\dot{H}^{1}_{x} \cap L^{3}_{x}) \times L^{2}_{x}$, which is a c…
A local monotonicity formula for the Yang-Mills-Higgs flow on $G$-bundles over $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ ($n>4$) is proved. It is shown that the monotone quantity coïncides on certain self-similar solutions with that appearing in existing non-local monotonicity formulæ for the Yang-Mills and Yang-Mills-Higgs flows.
We study singularity structure of Yang-Mills flow in dimensions $n \geq 4$. First we obtain a description of the singular set in terms of concentration for a localized entropy quantity, which leads to an estimate of its Hausdorff dimension. We develop a theory of tangent measures for the flow, which leads to a stratification of the singular set. By a refined blowup analysis we obtain Yang-Mills connections or solitons as blowup limits at any point in the singular set.
The Yang-Mills and Yang-Mills-Higgs equations in temporal gauge are locally well-posed for small and rough initial data, which can be shown using the null structure of the critical bilinear terms. This carries over a similar result by Tao for the Yang-Mills equations in the (3+1)-dimensional case to the more general Yang-Mills-Higgs system and to general dimensions.
We prove a removable singularities theorem for point singularities of the coupled yang mills fermion equations, on a bundle over a two dimensional base space.
In this paper, we study the local well-posedness of the $(1+3)$-dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs (YMH) and the Yang-Mills-Dirac (YMD) system in the Lorenz gauge. Since there is some bilinear term in (YMH), which is a lack of null structure, one may obtain the well-posedness at most the energy space. However, we attain the scaling critical regularity of (YMH) by imposing the extra weighted regularity in the angular variables. In (YMD), for the coupled system to persist in time, it is required to impose the angular regularity on the Dirac spinor as much as the Yang-Mills gauge potential and curvatur…
We prove that the Yang-Mills $α$-functional satisfies the Palais-Smale condition. This guarantees the existence of critical points, which are called Yang-Mills $α$-connections. It was shown by Hong, Tian and Yin in [10] (to appear in Comm. Math. Helv.) that as $α\to 1$, a sequence of Yang-Mills $α$-connections converges to a Yang-Mills connection away from finitely many points. We prove an energy identity for such a sequence of Yang-Mills $α$-connections. As an application, we also prove an energy identity for the Yang-Mills flow at the maximal existence time.
We introduce \emph{normalized exponential Yang-Mills energy functional} $\mathcal{YM}_e^0$, stress-energy tensor $S_{e,\mathcal{YM}^0 }$ associated with the normalized \emph{exponential Yang-Mills energy functional} $\mathcal{YM}_e ^0 $, $e$-conservation law. We also introduce the notion of the {\it $e$-degree} $d_e$ which connects two separate parts in the associated normalize exponential stress-energy tensor $S_{e,\mathcal{YM}^0 }$ (cf. (3.10) and (4.15)), derive monotonicity formula for exponential Yang-Mills fields, and prove a vanishing theorem for exponential Yang-Mills fields. These mon…
In this paper, we study the properties of the critical points of Yang-Mills-Higgs functional, which are called Yang-Mills-Higgs pairs. We first consider the properties of weakly stable Yang-Mills-Higgs pairs on a vector bundle over S^n (n > 3). When n > 3, we prove that the norm of its Higgs field is 1 and the connection is actually Yang-Mills. More precisely, its curvature vanishes when n > 4. We also use the bubble-neck decomposition to prove the energy identity of a sequence of Yang-Mills-Higgs pairs over a 4-dimensional compact manifold with uniformly bounded energy. We show there is a sub…
We study the failure of the smoothness of flow maps for the $(1+3)$ dimensional Yang-Mills system in the Lorenz gauge by Knapp type counterexamples. This shows a gap between the scaling critical regularity exponents and the best attainable regularity via Picard's iteration in the Yang-Mills system under the Lorenz gauge condition.
We proved a uniqueness theorem of tangent connections for a Yang-Mills connection with an isolated singularity with a quadratic growth of the curvature at the singularity. We also obtained controls over the rate of the asymptotic convergence of the connection to the tangent connection under assumptions that the connection is stationary or the tangent connection is integrable. There are parallel results for the cones at infinity of a Yang-Mills connection on an asymptotically flat manifold. We also gave an application of our methods to the Yang-Mills flow and proved that the Yang-Mills flow exi…
In this paper, we introduce an α-flow for the Yang-Mills functional in vector bundles over four dimensional Riemannian manifolds, and establish global existence of a unique smooth solution to the α-flow with smooth initial value. We prove that the limit of solutions of the α-flow as α\to 1 is a weak solution to the Yang-Mills flow. By an application of the α-flow, we then follow the idea of Sacks and Uhlenbeck to prove some existence results for Yang-Mills connections and improve the minimizing result of the Yang-Mills functional of Sedlacek.
We show under natural assumptions that stable solutions to the abelian Yang--Mills--Higgs equations on Hermitian line bundles over the round $2$-sphere actually satisfy the vortex equations, which are a first-order reduction of the (second-order) abelian Yang--Mills--Higgs equations. We also obtain a similar result for stable solutions on a flat $2$-torus. Our method of proof comes from the work of Bourguignon--Lawson concerning stable $SU(2)$ Yang--Mills connections on compact homogeneous $4$-manifolds.
We describe a glueing construction for the Yang-Mills equations in dimension $n > 4$. Our method is based on a construction of approximate solutions, and a detailed analysis of the linearized operator near an approximate solution.
