We investigate the existence of the pure spin ratchet effect in a dissipative quasi-one-dimensional system with Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The system is additionally placed into a transverse uniform stationary in-plane magnetic field. It is shown that the effect exists at low temperatures and pure spin currents can be generated by applying an unbiased ac driving to the system. An analytical expression for the ratchet spin current is derived. From this expression it follows that the spin ratchet effect appears as a result of the simultaneous presence of the spin-orbit interaction, coupling between the orbital degrees of freedom and spatial asymmetry. In this paper we consider the case of a broken spatial symmetry by virtue of asymmetric periodic potentials. It turns out that an external magnetic field does not have any impact on the existence of the spin ratchet effect, but it influences its efficiency enhancing or reducing the magnitude of the spin current.
We demonstrate transport rectification in a hermitian Hamiltonian quantum ratchet by a dissipative, dynamic impurity. While the bulk of the ratchet supports transport in both directions, the properly designed loss function of the local impurity acts as a direction-dependent filter for the moving states. We analyse this scheme theoretically by making use of Floquet-S-Matrix theory. In addition, we provide the direct experimental observation of one-way transmittance in periodically modulated plasmonic waveguide arrays containing a local impurity with engineered losses.

We consider bio-inspired ring systems as photovoltaic circuits to explore the advantage of `optical ratcheting', a process whereby the arrangement of coupled optical dipoles enables delocalised excitonic states that are protected against radiative decay whilst permitting the absorption of further photons. We explore how the performance of a ratcheting antenna scales with system size when excitons are incoherently or coherently extracted from the antenna to an associated trap site. In both instances we also move to the polaron frame in order to more closely model realistic systems where the cou…

Magnetic skyrmions are compact chiral spin textures that exhibit a rich variety of topological phenomena and hold potential for developing high-density memory devices and novel computing schemes driven by spin currents. Here, we demonstrate room temperature interfacial stabilization and current-driven control of skyrmion bubbles in the ferrimagnetic insulator Tm3Fe5O12 (TmIG) coupled to Pt. We track the current-induced motion of individual skyrmion bubbles. The ferrimagnetic order of the crystal together with the interplay of spin-orbit torques and pinning determine the skyrmion dynamics in Tm…
The asymmetric responses of the system between the external force of right and left directions are called "nonreciprocal". There are many examples of nonreciprocal responses such as the rectification by p-n junction. However, the quantum mechanical wave does not distinguish between the right and left directions as long as the time-reversal symmetry is intact, and it is a highly nontrivial issue how the nonreciprocal nature originates in quantum systems. Here we demonstrate by the quantum ratchet model, i.e., a quantum particle in an asymmetric periodic potential, that the dissipation character…

We study theoretically the dissipative Bose-Hubbard model describing array of tunneling-coupled cavities with non-conservative photon-photon interaction. Our calculation of the complex energy spectrum for the photon pairs reveals exceptional points where the two-photon states bound by nonlinear dissipation are formed. This improves fundamental understanding of the interplay of non-Hermiticity and interactions in the quantum structures and can be potentially used for on-demand nonlinear light generation in photonic lattices.
Superconducting circuits provide a new platform to study nonstationary cavity QED phenomena. An example of such a phenomenon is a dynamical Lamb effect which is a parametric excitation of an atom due to the nonadiabatic modulation of its Lamb shift. This effect has been initially introduced for a natural atom in a varying cavity, while we suggested its realization in a superconducting qubit-cavity system with dynamically tunable coupling. In the present paper, we study the interplay between the dynamical Lamb effect and the energy dissipation, which is unavoidable in realistic systems. We find…
Similarly to their purely electric counterparts, spintronic circuits may be presented as networks of lumped elements. Due to interplay between spin and charge currents, each element is described by a matrix conductance. We establish reciprocity relations between the entries of the conductance matrix of a multi-terminal linear device, comprising normal metallic and strong ferromagnetic elements with spin-inactive interfaces between them. In particular, reciprocity equates the spin transmissions through a two-terminal element in the opposite directions. When applied to "geometric spin ratchets",…
We theoretically study a simple non-equilibrium quantum network whose dynamics can be expressed and exactly solved in terms of a time-local master equation. Specifically, we consider a pair of coupled fermionic modes, each one locally exchanging energy and particles with an independent, macroscopic thermal reservoir. We show that the generator of the asymptotic master equation is not additive, i.e. it cannot be expressed as a sum of contributions describing the action of each reservoir alone. Instead, we identify an additional interference term that generates coherences in the energy eigenbasi…
Berry phase effect plays a central role in many mesoscale condensed matter and quantum chemical systems that are naturally under the environmental influence of dissipation. We propose and microscopically derive a prototypical quantum coherent tunneling model around a monopole or conical potential intersection in order to address the intriguing but overlooked interplay between dissipation and topologically nontrivial Berry phase effect. We adopt the instanton approach with both symmetry analysis and accurate numerical solutions that consistently incorporate nonperturbative dissipation and Berry…
We review recent theoretical and experimental developments concerning collective spin excitations in two-dimensional electron liquid (2DEL) systems, with particular emphasis on the interplay between many-body and spin-orbit effects, as well as the intrinsic dissipation due to the spin-Coulomb drag. Historically, the experimental realization of 2DELs in silicon inversion layers in the 60s and 70s created unprecedented opportunities to probe subtle quantum effects, culminating in the discovery of the quantum Hall effect. In the following years, high quality 2DELs were obtained in doped quantum w…
Describing current in open quantum systems can be problematic due to the subtle interplay of quantum coherence and environmental noise. Probing the noise-induced current can be detrimental to the tunneling-induced current and vice versa. We derive a general theory for the probability current in quantum systems arbitrarily interacting with their environment that overcomes this difficulty. We show that the current can be experimentally measured by performing a sequence of weak and standard quantum measurements. We exemplify our theory by analyzing a simple Smoluchowski-Feynman-type ratchet consi…
We study the emergence of dissipation in an atomic Josephson junction between weakly-coupled superfluid Fermi gases. We find that vortex-induced phase slippage is the dominant microscopic source of dissipation across the BEC-BCS crossover. We explore different dynamical regimes by tuning the bias chemical potential between the two superfluid reservoirs. For small excitations, we observe dissipation and phase coherence to coexist, with a resistive current followed by well-defined Josephson oscillations. We link the junction transport properties to the phase-slippage mechanism, finding that vort…
We study the intrinsic superconductivity in a dissipative Floquet electronic system in the presence of attractive interactions. Based on the functional Keldysh theory beyond the mean-field treatment, we find that the system shows a time-periodic bosonic condensation and reaches an intrinsic dissipative Floquet superconducting (SC) phase. Due to the interplay between dissipations and periodic modulations, the Floquet SC gap becomes "soft" and contains the diffusive fermionic modes with finite lifetimes. However, bosonic modes of the bosonic condensation are still propagating even in the presenc…
