We investigate the interplay between the quantum coherence and statistics in electrically driven nano-structures. We obtain expression for the admittance and the current noise for a driven nano-capacitor in terms of the Floquet scattering matrix and derive a non-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relation. As an interplay between the quantum phase coherence and the many-body correlation, the admittance has peak values whenever the noise power shows a step as a function of near-by gate voltage.
Our theory is demonstrated by calculating the admittance and noise of driven double quantum dots.
Resonant manipulation of carbon nanotube valley-spin qubits by an electric field is investigated theoretically. We develop a new analysis of electrically driven spin resonance exploiting fixed physical characteristics of the nanotube: a bend and inhomogeneous disorder. The spectrum is simulated for an electron valley-spin qubit coupled to a hole valley-spin qubit and an impurity electron spin, and features that coincide with a recent measurement are identified. We show that the same mechanism allows resonant control of the full four-dimensional spin-valley space.
We discuss the mechanisms behind the electrically driven insulator-metal transition in single crystalline VO$_2$ nanobeams. Our DC and AC transport measurements and the versatile harmonic analysis method employed show that non-uniform Joule heating causes phase inhomogeneities to develop within the nanobeam and is responsible for driving the transition in VO$_{2}$. A Poole-Frenkel like purely electric field induced transition is found to be absent and the role of percolation near and away from the electrically driven transition in VO$_{2}$ is also identified. The results and the harmonic analy…
Electrically-driven optical antennas can serve as compact sources of electromagnetic radiation operating at optical frequencies. In the most widely explored configurations, the radiation is generated by electrons tunneling between metallic parts of the structure when a bias voltage is applied across the tunneling gap. Rather than relying on an inherently inefficient inelastic light emission in the gap, we suggest to use a ballistic nanoconstriction as the feed element of an optical antenna supporting plasmonic modes. We discuss the underlying mechanisms responsible for the optical emission, an…
We describe dynamics of spin and valley transitions driven by alternating electric fields in quantum dots defined electrostatically within semiconducting carbon nanotubes (CNT). We use the tight-binding approach to describe the states localized within a quantum dot taking into account the circumferential spin-orbit interaction due to the s-p hybridization and external fields. The basis of eigenstates localized in the quantum dot is used in the solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation for description of spin flips and inter-valley transitions that are driven by periodic perturbation…
An ambipolar $n$-$p$ double quantum dot defined by potential variation along a semiconducting carbon-nanotube is considered. We focus on the (1e,1h) charge configuration with a single excess electron in the conduction band state confined in the $n$-type dot and a single missing electron in the valence band state of the $p$-dot for which lifting of the Pauli blockade of the current was observed in the electric-dipole spin resonance [E. A. Laird et al. Nat. Nanotech. 8 , 565 (2013)]. The dynamics of the system driven by periodic electric field is studied with the Floquet theory and the time-depe…
Photon statistics is a powerful tool for characterizing the emission dynamics of nanoscopic systems and their photophysics. Recent advances that combine correlation spectroscopy with scanning tunneling microscopy-induced luminescence (STML) have allowed measuring the emission dynamics from individual molecules and defects demonstrating their nature as single photon emitters. The application of correlation spectroscopy to the analysis of the dynamics of a well-characterized adsorbate system in ultrahigh vacuum remained to be shown. Here we combine single photon time correlations with STML to me…
We propose a generator of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) which, unlike spasers or plasmon lasers, does not require stimulated emission in the system. Its principle of operation is based on a positive feedback which a classical oscillating dipole experiences from a reflective surface located in its near field. The generator design includes a nanocavity between two metal surfaces which contains metal nanoparticles in its interior. The whole structure is placed onto a prism surface that allows one to detect the generated SPPs in the Kretschmann configuration. The generation process is driven b…
Recent advances in nanotechnology have created tremendous excitement across different disciplines but in order to fully control and manipulate nano-scale objects, we must understand the forces at work at the nano-scale, which can be very different from those that dominate the macro-scale. We show that there is a new kind of curvature-induced force that acts between nano-corrugated electrically neutral plasmonic surfaces. Absent in flat surfaces, such a force owes its existence entirely to geometric curvature, and originates from the kinetic energy associated with the electron density which ten…
Hole spins in silicon represent a promising yet barely explored direction for solid-state quantum computation, possibly combining long spin coherence, resulting from a reduced hyperfine interaction, and fast electrically driven qubit manipulation. Here we show that a silicon-nanowire field-effect transistor based on state-of-the-art silicon-on-insulator technology can be operated as a few-hole quantum dot. A detailed magnetotransport study of the first accessible hole reveals a g-factor with unexpectedly strong anisotropy and gate dependence. We infer that these two characteristics could enabl…
Quantum dots inserted in semiconducting nanowires are a promising platform for the fabrication of single photon devices. However, it is difficult to fully comprehend the electro-optical behaviour of such quantum objects without correlated studies of the structural and optical properties on the same nanowire. In this work, we study the spectral tunability of the emission of a single quantum dot in a GaN nanowire by applying external bias. The nanowires are dispersed and contacted on electron beam transparent Si3N4 membranes, so that transmission electron microscopy observations, photocurrent an…
The ability to manipulate electron spins with voltage-dependent electric fields is key to the operation of quantum spintronics devices, such as spin-based semiconductor qubits. A natural approach to electrical spin control exploits the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) inherently present in all materials. So far, this approach could not be applied to electrons in silicon, due to their extremely weak SOC. Here we report an experimental realization of electrically driven electron-spin resonance in a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanowire quantum dot device. The underlying driving mechanism results from an …
The Ising machine is an unconventional computing architecture that can be used to solve NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems more efficiently than traditional von Neumann architectures. Fast, compact oscillator networks which provide programmable connectivities among arbitrary pairs of nodes are highly desirable for the development of practical oscillator-based Ising machines. Here we propose using an electrically coupled array of GHz spin Hall nano-oscillators to realize such a network. By developing a general analytical framework that describes injection locking of spin Hall oscillato…
We present an electrically driven plasmonic device consisting of a gold nanoparticle trapped in a gap between two electrodes. The tunneling current in the device generates plasmons, which decay radiatively. The emitted spectrum extends up to an energy that depends on the applied voltage. Characterization of the electrical conductance at low temperatures allows us to extract the voltage drop on each tunnel barrier and the corresponding emitted spectrum. In several devices we find a pronounced sharp asymmetrical dip in the spectrum, which we identify as a Fano resonance. Finite-difference time-d…
Core-shell GaAs-based nanowires monolithically integrated on Si constitute a promising class of nanostructures that could enable light emitters for fast inter- and intrachip optical connections. We introduce and fabricate a novel coaxial GaAs/(In,Ga)As dot-in-a-well nanowire heterostructure to reach spontaneous emission in the Si transparent region, which is crucial for applications in Si photonics. Specifically, we achieve room temperature emission at 1.27 $μ$m in the telecommunication O band. The presence of quantum dots in the heterostructure is evidenced by a structural analysis based on s…
Above-threshold light emission from plasmonic tunnel junctions, when emitted photons have energies significantly higher than the energy scale of the incident electrons, has attracted much recent interest in nano-optics, while the underlying physical mechanism remains elusive. We examine above-threshold light emission in electromigrated tunnel junctions. Our measurements over a large ensemble of devices demonstrate a giant material dependence of photon yield (emitted photons per incident electrons), as large as four orders of magnitude. This dramatic effect cannot be explained only by the radia…
We describe an approach to electrically control the strong interaction between a single electron spin and the vibrational motion of a suspended carbon nanotube resonator. The strength of the deflection-induced spin-phonon coupling is dependent on the wavefunction of the electron confined in a lateral carbon nanotube quantum dot. An electrical field along the nanotube shifts the effective center of the quantum dot, leading to the corresponding modification of the spin-phonon strength. Numerical simulations with experimentally reachable parameters show that high fidelity quantum state transfer b…
Quantum confinement in atomically-thin TMDCs enables the realization of deterministic single-photon emitters. The position and polarization control of single photons have been achieved via local strain engineering using nanostructures. However, most existing TMDC-based emitters are operated by optical pumping, while the emission sites in electrically pumped emitters are uncontrolled. Here, we demonstrate electrically driven single-photon emitters located at the positions where strains are induced by atomic-force-microscope indentation on a van der Waals heterostructure consisting of graphene, …
Large-scale quantum computers must be built upon quantum bits that are both highly coherent and locally controllable. We demonstrate the quantum control of the electron and the nuclear spin of a single 31P atom in silicon, using a continuous microwave magnetic field together with nanoscale electrostatic gates. The qubits are tuned into resonance with the microwave field by a local change in electric field, which induces a Stark shift of the qubit energies. This method, known as A-gate control, preserves the excellent coherence times and gate fidelities of isolated spins, and can be extended to…
