The ring of projective invariants of eight ordered points on the line is a quotient of the polynomial ring on V, where V is a fourteen-dimensional representation of S_8, by an ideal I_8, so the modular fivefold (P^1)^8 // GL(2) is Proj(Sym* (V)/I_8). We show that there is a unique cubic hypersurface S in PV whose equation s is skew-invariant, and that the singular locus of S is the modular fivefold. In particular, over Z[1/3], the modular fivefold is cut out by the 14 partial derivatives of s. Better: these equations generate I_8. In characteristic 3, the cubic s is needed to generate the ideal. The existence of such a cubic was predicted by Dolgachev. Over Q, we recover the 14 quadrics found by computer calculation by Koike, and our approach yields a conceptual representation-theoretic description of the presentation. Additionally we find the graded Betti numbers of a minimal free resolution in any characteristic.
The proof over Q is by pure thought, using Lie theory and commutative algebra. Over Z, the assistance of a computer was necessary. This result will be used as the base case describing the equations of the moduli space of an arbitrary number of points on P^1, with arbitrary weighting, in a later paper, completing the program of our previous paper (Duke Math. J.). The modular fivefold, and corresponding ring, are known to have a number of special incarnations, due to Deligne-Mostow, Kondo, and Freitag-Salvati Manni, for example as ball quotients or ring of modular forms respectively.
The estimate for the maximal number of ordinary double points of a projective surface of degree eight is improved to $168\leqμ(8)\leq 174$ by constructing a projective surface of degree eight with 168 nodes.
We develop techniques to split the principal parts on the projective line over an arbitrary ring and apply these techniques to give a complete classification of the principal parts on the projective line over any field of characteristic zero.
We prove a formula for the orbifold Chow ring of semi-projective toric DM stacks, generalizing the orbifold Chow ring formula of projective toric DM stacks by Borisov-Chen-Smith. We also consider a special kind of semi-projective toric DM stacks, the Lawrence toric DM stacks. We prove that the orbifold Chow ring of a Lawrence toric DM stack is isomorphic to the orbifold Chow ring of its associated hypertoric DM stack studied in \cite{JT}.
The projective coordinate ring of a projective Poisson scheme $X$ does not usually admit a structure of a Poisson algebra. We show that when $H^1(X,O_X)=H^2(X,O_X)=0$, this can be corrected by embedding $X$ into a canonical one-parameter deformation. The scheme $X$ then becomes the Hamiltonian reduction of the spectrum of the deformed projective coordinate ring with respect to $G_m$. The projection into the base of the deformation is the moment map.
Using combinatorial methods, we determine that a projective coordinate ring of the moduli of parabolic principal $\mathrm{SL}_2$-bundles on a marked projective curve is not Gorenstein when the genus and number of marked points are greater than $1$.
The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we determine which blow-ups of products of projective spaces at general points are varieties of Fano type, and give boundary divisors making these spaces log Fano pairs. Secondly, we describe generators of the Cox rings of some cases.
In this article, we give a proof for a geometric presentation theorem for any irreducible scheme $X$ smooth projective over a discrete valuation ring $R$. As a consequence, for any reductive $R$-group scheme $\mathbf{G}$, we prove that any generically trivial principal $\mathbf{G}$-bundle over $X$ glued to a principal $\mathbf{G}_U$-bundle over the affine line $\mathbb{A}^1_U$ for a semilocal affine scheme $U$.
We construct an isomorphism of graded Frobenius algebras between the orbifold Chow ring of weighted projective spaces and graded algebras of groups of roots of the unity.
In this paper we study the geometry of the $14$ families of K3 surfaces of Picard number four with finite automorphism group, whose Néron-Severi lattices have been classified by È.B. Vinberg. We provide projective models, we identify the degrees of a generating set of the Cox ring and in some cases we prove the unirationality of the associated moduli space.
The aim is to give a geometric characterization of the finite generation of the Cox ring of anticanonical rational surfaces. This characterization is encoded in the finite generation of the effective monoid. Furthermore, we prove that in the case of a smooth projective rational surface having a negative multiple of its canonical divisor with only two linearly independent global sections (e.g., an elliptic rational surface), the finite generation is equivalent to the fact that there are only a finite number of smooth projective rational curves of self-intersection -1. The ground field is assume…
We study the equivariant cobordism rings for the action of a torus $T$ on smooth varieties over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We prove a theorem describing the rational $T$-equivariant cobordism rings of smooth projective $G$-spherical varieties with the action of a maximal torus $T$ of $G$. As an application, we obtain explicit presentations for the rational equivariant cobordism rings of smooth projective horospherical varieties of Picard number one.
In this paper, we prove formulas that represent two-pointed Gromov-Witten invariant <O_{h^a}O_{h^b}>_{0,d} of projective hypersurfaces with d=1,2 in terms of Chow ring of Mbar_{0,2}(P^{N-1},d), the moduli spaces of stable maps from genus 0 stable curves to projective space P^{N-1}. Our formulas are based on representation of the intersection number w(O_{h^a}O_{h^b})_{0,d}, which was introduced by Jinzenji, in terms of Chow ring of Mp_{0,2}(N,d), the moduli space of quasi maps from P^1 to P^{N-1} with two marked points. In order to prove our formulas, we use the results on Chow ring of Mbar_{0,…
We compare the Chen-Ruan cohomology ring of the weighted projective spaces $\IP(1,3,4,4)$ and $\IP(1,...,1,n)$ with the cohomology ring of their crepant resolutions. In both cases, we prove that the Chen-Ruan cohomology ring is isomorphic to the quantum corrected cohomology ring of the crepant resolution after suitable evaluation of the quantum parameters. For this, we prove a formula for the Gromov-Witten invariants of the resolution of a transversal ${\rm A}_3$ singularity.
We compute the divisor class group and the Picard group of projective varieties with Hibi rings as homogeneous coordinate rings. These varieties are precisely the toric varieties associated to order polytopes. We use tools from the theory of toric varieties to get a description of the two groups which only depends on combinatorial properties of the underlying poset.
We describe the Chow rings of moduli spaces of ordered configurations of points on the projective line for arbitrary (sufficiently generic) stabilities. As an application, we exhibit such a moduli space admitting two small desingularizations with non-isomorphic cohomology rings.
We introduce and investigate an equivalence relation called "radical parallelism" on the projective line over a ring. It is closely related with the Jacobson radical of the underlying ring. As an application, we present a rather general approach to non-linear models of affine spaces and discuss some particular examples.
We show how to translate the task of computing the multiplicative structure of a Chow ring of a projective homogeneous variety into an easily understandable combinatorial task of calculating in the corresponding polynomial ring. The algorithms are also presented as a Maple package. Then we proceed to compute the multiplicative structure of the Chow rings for projective homogeneous varieties E6/P1, E7/P7, and E8/P8.
In the past 15 years a study of ``noncommutative projective geometry'' has flourished. By using and generalizing techniques of commutative projective geometry, one can study certain noncommutative graded rings and obtain results for which no purely algebraic proof is known. For instance, noncommutative graded domains of quadratic growth, or ``noncommutative curves,'' have now been classified by geometric data and these rings must be noetherian. Rings of cubic growth, or ``noncommutative surfaces,'' are not yet classified, but a rich theory is currently forming. In this survey, we describe some…
In this paper we calculate the Witt ring W(C) of a smooth geometrically connected projective curve C over a finite field of characteristic different from 2. We view W(C) as a subring of W(k(C)) where k(C) is the function field of C. We show that the triviality of the Clifford algebra of a bilinear space over C gives the main relation. The calculation is then completed using classical results for bilinear spaces over fields.
In this paper, we study the structure of the quantum cohomology ring of a projective hypersurface with non-positive 1st Chern class. We prove a theorem which suggests that the mirror transformation of the quantum cohomology of a projective Calabi-Yau hypersurface has a close relation with the ring of symmetric functions, or with Schur polynomials. With this result in mind, we propose a generalized mirror transformation on the quantum cohomology of a hypersurface with negative first Chern class and construct an explicit prediction formula for three point Gromov-Witten invariants up to cubic rat…
The Hilbert scheme of point modules was introduced by Artin-Tate-Van den Bergh to study non-commutative graded algebras. The key tool is the construction of a map from the algebra to a twisted ring on this Hilbert scheme. In this paper, we study moduli stacks of more general "fat" point modules, and show that there is a similar map to a twisted ring associated to the stack. This is used to provide a sufficient criterion for a non-commutative projective surface to be birationally PI. It is hoped that such a criterion will be useful in understanding Mike Artin's conjecture on the birational clas…
In this paper, we propose another characterization of the generalized mirror transformation on the quantum cohomology rings of general type projective hypersurfaces. This characterics is useful for explicit determination of the form of the generalized mirror transformation. As applications, we rederive the generalized mirror transformation up to $d=3$ rational Gromov-Witten invariants obtained in our previous article, and determine explicitly the the generalized mirror transformation for the $d=4, 5$ rational Gromov-Witten invariants in the case when the first Chern class of the hypersurface e…
In this paper, for any Milnor hypersurface we find the largest dimension of effective algebraic torus actions on it. The proof of the corresponding theorem is based on the computation of the automorphism group for any Milnor hypersurface. We find all generalised Buchstaber-Ray and Ray hypersurfaces that are toric varieties. We compute the Betti numbers of these hypersurfaces and describe their integral singular cohomology rings in terms of the cohomology of the corresponding ambient varieties.
We describe the integral equivariant cohomology ring of a weighted projective space in terms of piecewise polynomials, and thence by generators and relations. We deduce that the ring is a perfect invariant, and prove a Chern class formula for weighted projective bundles.
A list of different types of a projective line over non-commutative rings with unity of order up to thirty-one inclusive is given. Eight different types of such a line are found. With a single exception, the basic characteristics of the lines are identical to those of their commutative counterparts. The exceptional projective line is that defined over the non-commutative ring of order sixteen that features ten zero-divisors and it most pronouncedly differs from its commutative sibling in the number of shared points by the neighbourhoods of three pairwise distant points (three versus zero), tha…
We construct an associative ring which is a deformation of the quantum cohomology ring of the projective plane. Just as the quantum cohomology encodes the incidence characteristic numbers of rational plane curves, the contact cohomology encodes the tangency characteristic numbers.
Let $R$ be a hypersurface in an equicharacteristic or unramified regular local ring. For a pair of modules $(M,N)$ over $R$ we study applications of rigidity of $\Tor^R(M,N)$, based on ideas by Huneke, Wiegand and Jorgensen. We then focus on the hypersurfaces with isolated singularity and even dimension, and show that modules over such rings behave very much like those over regular local rings. Connections and applications to projective hypersurfaces such as intersection dimension of subvarieties and cohomological criterion for splitting of vector bundles are discussed.
Suppose K is a field of characteristic 0, $K_a$ is its algebraic closure, p is an odd prime. Suppose, $f(x) \in K[x]$ is a polynomial of degree $n \ge 5$ without multiple roots. Let us consider a curve $C: y^p=f(x)$ and its jacobian J(C). It is known that the ring End(J(C)) of all $K_a$-endomorphisms of J(C) contains the ring $Z[ζ_p]$ of integers in the pth cyclotomic field (generated by obvious automorphisms of C). We prove that $End(J(C))=Z[ζ_p]$ if the Galois group of f over K is either the symmetric group $S_n$ or the alternating group $A_n$.
In the present paper, we define a notion of numerical equivalence on Chow groups or Grothendieck groups of Noetherian local rings, which is an analogue of that on smooth projective varieties. Under a mild condition, it is proved that the Chow group modulo numerical equivalence is a finite dimensional ${\Bbb Q}$-vector space, as in the case of smooth projective varieties. Numerical equivalence on local rings is deeply related to that on smooth projective varieties. For example, if Grothendieck's standard conjectures are true, then a vanishing of Chow group (of local rings) modulo numerical equi…
The total coordinate ring TC(X) of a normal variety is a generalization of the ring introduced and studied by Cox in connection with a toric variety. Consider a normal projective variety X with divisor class group Cl(X), and let us assume that it is a finitely generated free abelian group. We define the total coordinate ring of X to be TC(X) = oplus_{D} H^0 (X, O_X (D)), where the sum as above is taken over all Weil divisors of X contained in a fixed complete system of representatives of Cl(X). We prove that for any normal projective variety X, TC(X) is a UFD, this is a corollary of a more gen…
We study the ideals of the rational cohomology ring of the Hilbert scheme X^{[n]} of n points on a smooth projective surface X. As an application, for a large class of smooth quasi-projective surfaces X, we show that every cup product structure constant of H^*(X^{[n]}) is independent of n; moreover, we obtain two sets of ring generators for the cohomology ring H^*(X^{[n]}). Similar results are established for the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology ring of the symmetric product. In particular, we prove a ring isomorphism between H^*(X^{[n]}, C) and H^*_{orb}(X^{[n]}/S_n, C) for a large class of smoo…
Given a Henselian and Japanese discrete valuation ring $A$ and a flat and projective $A$-scheme $X$, we follow the approach of Biswas-dos Santos to introduce a full subcategory of coherent modules on $X$ which is then shown to be Tannakian. We then prove that, under normality of the generic fibre, the associated affine and flat group is pro-finite in a strong sense (so that its ring of functions is a Mittag-Leffler $A$-module) and that it classifies finite torsors $Q\to X$. This establishes an analogy to Nori's theory of the essentially finite fundamental group. In addition, we compare our the…
One of the open questions in the geometry of line arrangements is to what extent does the incidence lattice of an arrangement determine its fundamental group. Line arrangements of up to 6 lines were recently classified by K.M. Fan, and it turns out that the incidence lattice of such arrangements determines the projective fundamental group. We use actions on the set of wiring diagrams, introduced in [GTV] (math.AG/0107178), to classify real arrangements of up to 8 lines. In particular, we show that the incidence lattice of such arrangements determines both the affine and the projective fundamen…
