A multiresolution analysis for a Hilbert space realizes the Hilbert space as the direct limit of an increasing sequence of closed subspaces. In a previous paper, we showed how, conversely, direct limits could be used to construct Hilbert spaces which have multiresolution analyses with desired properties. In this paper, we use direct limits, and in particular the universal property which characterizes them, to construct wavelet bases in a variety of concrete Hilbert spaces of functions. Our results apply to the classical situation involving dilation matrices on $L^2(\R^n)$, the wavelets on fractals studied by Dutkay and Jorgensen, and Hilbert spaces of functions on solenoids.
In this short note we discuss the interplay between finite Coxeter groups and construction of wavelet sets, generalized multiresolution analysis and sampling.
We present a construction of a wavelet-type orthonormal basis for the space of radial $L^2$-functions in $\R^3$ via the concept of a radial multiresolution analysis. The elements of the basis are obtained from a single radial wavelet by usual dilations and generalized translations. Hereby the generalized translation reveals the group convolution of radial functions in $\R^3$. We provide a simple way to construct a radial scaling function and a radial wavelet from an even classical scaling function on $\R$. Furthermore, decomposition and reconstruction algorithms are formulated.
Spectral representations of the dilation and translation operators on $L^2({\mathbb R})$ are built through appropriate bases. Orthonormal wavelets and multiresolution analysis are then described in terms of rigid operator-valued functions defined on the functional spectral spaces. The approach is useful for computational purposes.
We study approximation properties generated by highly regular scaling functions and orthonormal wavelets. These properties are conveniently described in the framework of Gelfand-Shilov spaces. Important examples of multiresolution analyses for which our results apply arise in particular from Dziubański-Hernández construction of band-limited wavelets with subexponential decay. Our results are twofold. Firstly, we obtain approximation properties of multiresolution expansions of Gelfand-Shilov functions and (ultra)distributions. Secondly, we establish convergence of wavelet series expansions in t…
W. C. Lang determined wavelets on Cantor dyadic group by using Multiresolution analysis method. In this paper we have given characterization of wavelet sets on Cantor dyadic group providing another method for the construction of wavelets. All the wavelets originating from wavelet sets are not necessarily associated with a multiresolution analysis. Relation between multiresolution analysis and, wavelets determined from wavelet sets is established along with relevant examples.
We give an equivariant version of Packer and Rieffel's theorem on sufficient conditions for the existence of orthonormal wavelets in projective multiresolution analyses. The scaling functions that generate a projective multiresolution analysis are supposed to be invariant with respect to some finite group action. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of wavelets with similar invariance.
We identify multiresolution subspaces giving rise via Hankel transforms to Bessel functions. They emerge as orthogonal systems derived from geometric Hilbert-space considerations, the same way the wavelet functions from a multiresolution scaling wavelet construction arise from a scale of Hilbert spaces. We study the theory of representations of the C*-algebra O_{ν+1} arising from this multiresolution analysis.
We study $p$-adic multiresolution analyses (MRAs). A complete characterisation of test functions generating a MRA (scaling functions) is given. We prove that only 1-periodic test functions may be taken as orthogonal scaling functions and that all such scaling functions generate Haar MRA. We also suggest a method of constructing sets of wavelet functions and prove that any set of wavelet functions generates a $p$-adic wavelet frame.
A generalization of Mallat's classic theory of multiresolution analysis based on the theory of spectral pairs was considered by Gabardo and Nashed (J. Funct. Anal. 158, 209-241, 1998). In this article, we introduce the notion of biorthgonoal nonuniform multiresolution analysis on the spectrum $Λ=\left\{0, r/N\right\}+2\mathbb Z$, where $N\ge 1$ is an integer and $r$ is an odd integer with $1\le r\le 2N-1$ such that $r$ and $N$ are relatively prime. We first establish the necessary and sufficient conditions for the translates of a single function to form the Riesz bases for their closed linear …
In this short note, we investigate the relationship between so-called regular families of cardinal interpolators and multiresolution analyses. We focus our studies on examples of regular families of cardinal interpolators whose Fourier transform is unbounded at the origin. In particular, we show that when this is the case there is a multiresolution analysis corresponding to each member of a regular family of cardinal interpolators.
Homogeneous wavelets and framelets have been extensively investigated in the classical theory of wavelets and they are often constructed from refinable functions via the multiresolution analysis. On the other hand, nonhomogeneous wavelets and framelets enjoy many desirable theoretical properties and are often intrinsically linked to the refinable structure and multiresolution analysis. In this paper we shall provide a comprehensive study on connecting homogeneous wavelets and framelets to nonhomogeneous ones with the refinable structure. This allows us to understand better the structure of hom…
Radially symmetric wavelets possessing multiresolution framework are found to be useful in different fields like Pattern recognition, Computed Tomography (CT) etc. The compactly supported wavelets are known to be useful for localized operations in applications such as reconstruction, enhancement etc. In this work we introduce a novel way of designing compactly supported radial wavelets in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^2)$ from a 1D Daubechies wavelets and obtain a reconstruction formula possessing multiresolution framework. Further, we demonstrate the usefulness of our radial wavelets in Tomography.
We study positive transfer operators $R$ in the setting of general measure spaces $\left(X,\mathscr{B}\right)$. For each $R$, we compute associated path-space probability spaces $\left(Ω,\mathbb{P}\right)$. When the transfer operator $R$ is compatible with an endomorphism in $\left(X,\mathscr{B}\right)$, we get associated multiresolutions for the Hilbert spaces $L^{2}\left(Ω,\mathbb{P}\right)$ where the path-space $Ω$ may then be taken to be a solenoid. Our multiresolutions include both orthogonality relations and self-similarity algorithms for standard wavelets and for generalized wavelet-res…
Generalized multiresolution analyses are increasing sequences of subspaces of a Hilbert space $\H$ that fail to be multiresolution analyses in the sense of wavelet theory because the core subspace does not have an orthonormal basis generated by a fixed scaling function. Previous authors have studied a multiplicity function $m$ which, loosely speaking, measures the failure of the GMRA to be an MRA. When the Hilbert space $\H$ is $L^2(\mathbb R^n)$, the possible multiplicity functions have been characterized by Baggett and Merrill. Here we start with a function $m$ satisfying a consistency condi…
We develop the theory of multiresolutions in the context of Hausdorff measure of fractional dimension between 0 and 1. While our fractal wavelet theory has points of similarity that it shares with the standard case of Lebesgue measure on the line, there are also sharp contrasts. These are stated in our main result, a dichotomy theorem. The first section is the case of the middle-third Cantor set. This is followed by a review of the essentials on Hausdorff measure. The remaining sections of the paper cover multiresolutions in the general context of affine iterated function systems.
We study generalized filters that are associated to multiplicity functions and homomorphisms of the dual of an abelian group. These notions are based on the structure of generalized multiresolution analyses. We investigate when the Ruelle operator corresponding to such a filter is a pure isometry, and then use that characterization to study the problem of when a collection of closed subspaces, which satisfies all the conditions of a GMRA except the trivial intersection condition, must in fact have a trivial intersection. In this context, we obtain a generalization of a theorem of Bownik and Rz…
We discuss how generalized multiresolution analyses (GMRAs), both classical and those defined on abstract Hilbert spaces, can be classified by their multiplicity functions $m$ and matrix-valued filter functions $H$. Given a natural number valued function $m$ and a system of functions encoded in a matrix $H$ satisfying certain conditions, a construction procedure is described that produces an abstract GMRA with multiplicity function $m $ and filter system $H$. An equivalence relation on GMRAs is defined and described in terms of their associated pairs $(m,H)$. This classification system is appl…
We define the notion of "projective" multiresolution analyses, for which, by definition, the initial space corresponds to a finitely generated projective module over the algebra $C(\btn)$ of continuous complex-valued functions on an $n$-torus. The case of ordinary multi-wavelets is that in which the projective module is actually free. We discuss the properties of projective multiresolution analyses, including the frames which they provide for $L^2(\brn)$. Then we show how to construct examples for the case of any diagonal $2 \times 2$ dilation matrix with integer entries, with initial module s…
In this paper, we study nonhomogeneous wavelet systems which have close relations to the fast wavelet transform and homogeneous wavelet systems. We introduce and characterize a pair of frequency-based nonhomogeneous dual wavelet frames in the distribution space; the proposed notion enables us to completely separate the perfect reconstruction property of a wavelet system from its stability property in function spaces. The results in this paper lead to a natural explanation for the oblique extension principle, which has been widely used to construct dual wavelet frames from refinable functions, …
We construct a multiresolution theory for spaces bigger then L^2(R). For a good choice of the dilation and translation operators on these larger spaces, it is possible to build singly generated wavelet bases, thus obtaining examples of "super-wavelets"
A multiresolution analysis associated with linear canonical transform was defined by Shah and Waseem for which the translation set is a discrete set which is not a group. In this paper, we continue the study based on this nonstandard setting and introduce vector-valued nonuniform multiresolution analysis associated with linear canonical transform (LCT-VNUMRA). We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of associated wavelets and derive an algorithm for the construction of vector-valued nonuniform multiresolution analysis on local fields starting from a vector refinemen…
We present a notion of frame multiresolution analysis on the Heisenberg group, abbreviated by FMRA, and study its properties. Using the irreducible representations of this group, we shall define a sinc-type function which is our starting point for obtaining the scaling function. Further, we shall give a concrete example of a wavelet FMRA on the Heisenberg group which is analogous to the Shannon MRA on $\RR$.
We continue the study of projective module wavelet frames corresponding to diagonal dilation matrices on $\mathbb R^n$ with integer entries, focusing on the construction of a projective multi-resolution analysis corresponding to dilations whose domains are finitely generated projective modules over continuous complex-valued functions on $n$-tori, $n\geq 3$. We are able to generalize some of these results to dilation matrices that are conjugates of integral diagonal dilation matrices by elements of $SL(n,\mathbb Z).$ We follow the method proposed by the author and M. Rieffel, and are able to co…
We construct representations of a q-oscillator algebra by operators on Fock space on positive matrices. They emerge from a multiresolution scaling construction used in wavelet analysis. The representations of the Cuntz Algebra arising from this multiresolution analysis are contained as a special case in the Fock Space construction.
We set up a multiresolution analysis on fractal sets derived from limit sets of Markov Interval Maps. For this we consider the $\mathbb{Z}$-convolution of a non-atomic measure supported on the limit set of such systems and give a thorough investigation of the space of square integrable functions with respect to this measure. We define an abstract multiresolution analysis, prove the existence of mother wavelets, and then apply these abstract results to Markov Interval Maps. Even though, in our setting the corresponding scaling operators are in general not unitary we are able to give a complete …
Spaces of harmonic functions in upper half-space with controlled growth near the boundary are described in terms of multiresolution approximations. The results are applied to prove the law of the iterated logarithm for the oscillation of harmonic functions along vertical lines.
A theory of higher rank multiresolution analysis is given in the setting of abelian multiscalings. This theory enables the construction, from a higher rank MRA, of finite wavelet sets whose multidilations have translates forming an orthonormal basis in $L^2(\bR^d)$. While tensor products of uniscaled MRAs provide simple examples we construct many nonseparable higher rank wavelets. In particular we construct Latin square wavelets as rank 2 variants of Haar wavelets. Also we construct nonseparable scaling functions for rank 2 variants of Meyer wavelet scaling functions, and we construct the asso…
We give a characterization of a class of band-limited wavelets of $L^2({\mathbb R})$ and show that none of these wavelets come from a multiresolution analysis (MRA). For each $n\geq 2$, we construct a subset $S_n$ of ${\mathbb R}$ which is symmetric with respect to the origin. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on a function $ψ\in L^2({\mathbb R})$ with supp $\hatψ\subseteq S_n$ to be an orthonormal wavelet. This result generalizes the characterization of a class of wavelets of E. Hernández and G. Weiss. The dimension functions associated with these wavelets are also computed explicit…
The dilation equation arises naturally when using a multiresolution analysis to construct a wavelet basis. We consider solutions in the space of signed measures, which, after normalization, can be viewed as pseudo-probability measures. Using probabilistic ideas as well as a notion of binary expansions, we discuss the existence and absolute continuity of solutions in dimensions one and two, efficiently recovering previous results in two natural cases. A central role is played by the development of two variants of the classical cascade algorithm, which are adapted to the pseudo-probabilistic and…
