We give a characterization of a class of band-limited wavelets of $L^2({\mathbb R})$ and show that none of these wavelets come from a multiresolution analysis (MRA). For each $n\geq 2$, we construct a subset $S_n$ of ${\mathbb R}$ which is symmetric with respect to the origin. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on a function $ψ\in L^2({\mathbb R})$ with supp $\hatψ\subseteq S_n$ to be an orthonormal wavelet. This result generalizes the characterization of a class of wavelets of E. Hernández and G. Weiss. The dimension functions associated with these wavelets are also computed explicitly. Starting from the wavelets we have constructed, we are able to construct examples of wavelets in each of the equivalence classes of wavelets defined by E. Weber.
We provide a characterization of wavelets on local fields of positive characteristic based on results on affine and quasi affine frames. This result generalizes the characterization of wavelets on Euclidean spaces by means of two basic equations. We also give another characterization of wavelets. Further, all wavelets which are associated with a multiresolution analysis on a such a local field are also characterized.
We construct a multiresolution theory for spaces bigger then L^2(R). For a good choice of the dilation and translation operators on these larger spaces, it is possible to build singly generated wavelet bases, thus obtaining examples of "super-wavelets"
The concept of $p$-adic quincunx Haar MRA was introduced and studied in~\cite{KS10}. In contrast to the real setting, infinitely many different wavelet bases are generated by a $p$-adic MRA. We give an explicit description for all wavelet functions corresponding to the quincunx Haar MRA. Each one generates an orthogonal basis, one of them was presented in~\cite{KS10}. A connection between quincunx Haar bases and two-dimensional separable Haar MRA is also found.
For an arbitrary matrix dilation, any integer n and any integer/semi-integer c, we describe all masks that are symmetric with respect to the point c and have sum rule of order n. For each such mask, we give explicit formulas for wavelet functions that are point symmetric/antisymmetric and generate frame-like wavelet system providing approximation order n. For any matrix dilations (which are appropriate for axial symmetry group on R^2 in some natural sense) and given integer n, axial symmetric/antisymmetric frame-like wavelet systems providing approximation order n are constructed. Also, for se…
A theory of higher rank multiresolution analysis is given in the setting of abelian multiscalings. This theory enables the construction, from a higher rank MRA, of finite wavelet sets whose multidilations have translates forming an orthonormal basis in $L^2(\bR^d)$. While tensor products of uniscaled MRAs provide simple examples we construct many nonseparable higher rank wavelets. In particular we construct Latin square wavelets as rank 2 variants of Haar wavelets. Also we construct nonseparable scaling functions for rank 2 variants of Meyer wavelet scaling functions, and we construct the asso…
For Vilenkin group only the existence of multiwavelets associated with multiresolution analysis (MRA) is known. In this paper, we have shown that by using wavelet sets we can also construct single wavelet in case of Vilenkin group which are not associated with MRA.We have given characterization of single and multi-wavelet sets on Vilenkin group. Further, we have studied generalized scaling sets, some of their properties and relation between wavelet sets and generalized scaling sets.
We study $p$-adic multiresolution analyses (MRAs). A complete characterisation of test functions generating a MRA (scaling functions) is given. We prove that only 1-periodic test functions may be taken as orthogonal scaling functions and that all such scaling functions generate Haar MRA. We also suggest a method of constructing sets of wavelet functions and prove that any set of wavelet functions generates a $p$-adic wavelet frame.
We consider a class of $(1,M)$-elementary step functions on the $p$-adic Vilenkin group. We prove that $(1,M)$-elementary step function generates a MRA on $p$-adic Vilenkin group iff it is generated by a rooted tree on the set of vertices $\{0,1,\dots p-1\}$ with 0 as a root. In this article we establish theory of semi-orthogonal Parseval wavelets associated to generalized multiresolution analysis (GMRA) for the local field of positive characteristics (LFPC). By employing the properties of translation invariant spaces on the core space of GMRA we obtain a characterization of semi-orthogonal Parseval wavelets in terms of consistency equation for LFPC. As a consequence, we obtain a characterization of an orthonormal (multi)wavelet to be associated with an MRA in terms of multiplicity function as well as dimension function of a (multi)wavelet. Further, we provide char…
We consider the construction of orthonormal directional wavelet bases in the multi-resolution analysis (MRA) framework with quincunx dilation downsampling. We show that the Parseval frame property in MRA is equivalent to the identity summation and shift cancellation conditions on M functions, which essentially characterize the scaling (father) function and all directional (mother) wavelets. Based on these two conditions, we further derive sufficient conditions for orthonormal bases and build a family of quasishearlet orthonormal bases, that has the same frequency support as that of the least r…
This paper is devoted to wavelet analysis on adele ring $\bA$ and the theory of pseudo-differential operators. We develop the technique which gives the possibility to generalize finite-dimensional results of wavelet analysis to the case of adeles $\bA$ by using infinite tensor products of Hilbert spaces. The adele ring is roughly speaking a subring of the direct product of all possible ($p$-adic and Archimedean) completions $\bQ_p$ of the field of rational numbers $\bQ$ with some conditions at infinity. Using our technique, we prove that $L^2(\bA)=\otimes_{e,p\in\{\infty,2,3,5,...}}L^2({\bQ}_{…
The fractional Fourier transform (FrFT), which is a generalization of the Fourier transform, has become the focus of many research papers in recent years because of its applications in electrical engineering and optics. In this paper, we introduce the notion of fractional biorthogonal wavelets on $\mathbb{R}$ and obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for the translates of a single function to form the fractional Riesz bases for their closed linear span. We also provide a complete characterization for the fractional biorthogonality of the translates of fractional scaling functions of t…
We consider a class of $(N,M)$-elementary step functions on the $p$-adic Vilenkin group. We prove that $(N,M)$-elementary step function generates a MRA on $p$-adic Vilenkin group iff it is generated by a special $N$-valid rooted tree on the set of vertices $\{0,1,\dots p-1\}$ with the vector $(0,...,0)\in \mathbb Z^N$ as a root. Given a real, expansive dilation matrix we prove that any bandlimited function $ψ\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$, for which the dilations of its Fourier transform form a partition of unity, generates a wavelet frame for certain translation lattices. Moreover, there exists a dual wavelet frame generated by a finite linear combination of dilations of $ψ$ with explicitly given coefficients. The result allows a simple construction procedure for pairs of dual wavelet frames whose generators have compact support in the Fourier domain and desired time localization. The construction relies on a technical condi…
The dimension function D_psi of a band-limited wavelet is bounded by n if the support of its Fourier transform is contained in the interval [-{2^(n+2)/3}pi, {2^(n+2)/3}pi]. For each positive integer n and for each epsilon > 0, we construct a wavelet psi with support of $\hat psi$ contained in [-{2^(n+2)/3}pi, {2^(n+2)/3}pi + epsilon] such that D_psi > n on a set of positive measure, which proves that [-{2^(n+2)/3}pi, {2^(n+2)/3}pi] is the largest symmetric interval for estimating the dimension function by n.
A variety of different orthogonal wavelet bases has been found in L_2(R) for the last three decades. It appeared that similar constructions also exist for functions defined on some other algebraic structures, such as the Cantor and Vilenkin groups and local fields of positive characteristic. In the present paper we show that the situation is quite different for the field of $p$-adic numbers. Namely, it is proved that any orthogonal wavelet basis consisting of band-limited (periodic) functions is a modification of Haar basis. This is a little bit unexpected because from the wavelet theory point…
We study approximation properties generated by highly regular scaling functions and orthonormal wavelets. These properties are conveniently described in the framework of Gelfand-Shilov spaces. Important examples of multiresolution analyses for which our results apply arise in particular from Dziubański-Hernández construction of band-limited wavelets with subexponential decay. Our results are twofold. Firstly, we obtain approximation properties of multiresolution expansions of Gelfand-Shilov functions and (ultra)distributions. Secondly, we establish convergence of wavelet series expansions in t…

We propose a 2D generalization to the $M$-band case of the dual-tree decomposition structure (initially proposed by N. Kingsbury and further investigated by I. Selesnick) based on a Hilbert pair of wavelets. We particularly address (\textit{i}) the construction of the dual basis and (\textit{ii}) the resulting directional analysis. We also revisit the necessary pre-processing stage in the $M$-band case. While several reconstructions are possible because of the redundancy of the representation, we propose a new optimal signal reconstruction technique, which minimizes potential estimation errors…
An exact and general expression for the analytic wavelet transform of a real-valued signal is constructed, resolving the time-dependent effects of non-negligible amplitude and frequency modulation. The analytic signal is first locally represented as a modulated oscillation, demodulated by its own instantaneous frequency, and then Taylor-expanded at each point in time. The terms in this expansion, called the instantaneous modulation functions, are time-varying functions which quantify, at increasingly higher orders, the local departures of the signal from a uniform sinusoidal oscillation. Close…
