We investigate the most general conditions under which a finite ferromagnetic long-range inter- acting spin chain achieves unitary fidelity and the shortest transfer time in transmitting an unknown input qubit. A deeper insight into system dynamics, allows us to identify an ideal system involving sender and receiver only. However, this two-spin ideal chain is unpractical due to the rapid decrease of the coupling strength with the distance. Therefore, we propose an optimization scheme for ap- proaching the ideal behaviour, while keeping the interaction strength still reasonably high. The procedure is scalable with the size of the system and straightforward to implement.
It is shown how to perfectly transfer an arbitrary qudit state in interacting boson networks. By defining a family of Hamiltonians related to Bose-Hubbard model, we describe a possible method for state transfer through bosonic atoms trapped in these networks with different kinds of coupling strengths between them. Particularly, by taking the underlying networks of so called group schemes as interacting boson networks, we show how choose suitable coupling strengths between the nodes, in order that an arbitrary qudit state be transferred from one node to its antipode, perfectly. In fact, by empl…
The natural notion of almost perfect state transfer (APST) is examined. It is applied to the modelling of efficient quantum wires with the help of $XX$ spin chains. It is shown that APST occurs in mirror-symmetric systems, when the 1-excitation energies of the chains are linearly independent over rational numbers. This result is obtained as a corollary of the Kronecker theorem in Diophantine approximation. APST happens under much less restrictive conditions than perfect state transfer (PST) and moreover accommodates the unavoidable imperfections. Some examples are discussed.
We suggest a protocol for perfect quantum communication through spin chain channels. By combining a dual-rail encoding with measurements only at the receiving end, we can get conclusively perfect state transfer, whose probability of success can be made arbitrarily close to unity. As an example of such an amplitude delaying channel, we show how two parallel Heisenberg spin chains can be used as quantum wires. Perfect state transfer with a probability of failure lower than P in a Heisenberg chain of N spin-1/2 particles can be achieved in a timescale of the order of N^1.7|ln(P)|. We demonstrate …
A recent numerical study of short chains found near-perfect quantum state transfer between the boundary sites of a spin-1/2 XX chain if a sufficiently strong magnetic field acts on these sites. We show that the phenomenon is based on a pair of states strongly localized at the boundaries of the system and provide a simple quantitative analytical explanation.
We suggest a scheme that allows arbitrarily perfect state transfer even in the presence of random fluctuations in the couplings of a quantum chain. The scheme performs well for both spatially correlated and uncorrelated fluctuations if they are relatively weak (say 5%). Furthermore, we show that given a quite arbitrary pair of quantum chains, one can check whether it is capable of perfect transfer by only local operations at the ends of the chains, and the system in the middle being a "black box". We argue that unless some specific symmetries are present in the system, it will be capable of pe…
We propose to use ferromagnetic systems for entanglement generation and distribution together with perfect state transfer between distant parties in a qubit chain. The scheme relies on an effective 2-qubit dynamics, realized by leaving two empty sites in a uniformly filled chain. This allows long-range interacting qubit chains to serve as quantum channels for both tasks with optimal performances. Remarkably, the entanglement between sender and receiver sites is independent of both the transmission distance and of system size. This property opens new perspectives for short and mid-range quantum…
We present a communication protocol for chains of permanently coupled qubits which achieves perfect quantum state transfer and which is efficient with respect to the number chains employed in the scheme. The system consists of $M$ uncoupled identical quantum chains. Local control (gates, measurements) is only allowed at the sending/receiving end of the chains. Under a quite general hypothesis on the interaction Hamiltonian of the qubits a theorem is proved which shows that the receiver is able to asymptotically recover the messages by repetitive monitoring of his qubits.
We show how to perfectly transfer, without state initialization and remote collaboration, arbitrary functions in interacting boson lattices. We describe a possible implementation of state transfer through bosonic atoms trapped in optical lattices or polaritons in on-chip coupled cavities. Significantly, a family of Hamiltonians, both linear and nonlinear, is found which are related to the Bose-Hubbard model and that enable the perfect transfer of arbitrary functions. It is shown that the state transfer between two sites in two-dimensional lattices can result in quantum interference due to the …
We investigate quantum state transfer in XY spin chains and propose a recursive procedure to construct the nonuniform couplings of these chains with arbitrary length to achieve perfect state transfer(PST). We show that this method is capable of finding all possible coupling schemes for PST. These schemes, without external control fields, only involve preengineered couplings but not dynamical control of them, so they can be simply realized experimentally. The analytical solutions provide all information for coupling design.
The three- spin chain with Heisenberg XY- interaction is simulated in a three- qubit nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum computer. The evolution caused by the XY- interaction is decomposed into a series of single- spin rotations and the $J$- coupling evolutions between the neighboring spins. The perfect state transfer (PST) algorithm proposed by M. Christandl et al [Phys. Rev. Lett, 92, 187902(2004)] is realized in the XY- chain.
We demonstrate that perfect state transfer can be achieved using an engineered spin chain and clean local end-chain operations, without requiring the initialization of the state of the medium nor fine tuning of control-pulses. This considerably relaxes the prerequisites for obtaining reliable transfer of quantum information across interacting-spin systems. Moreover, it allows us to shed light on the interplay among purity, entanglement and operations on a class of many-body systems potentially useful for quantum information processing tasks.
We exploit a ferromagnetic chain of interacting $d$-level ($d>2$) particles for arbitrary perfect transfer of quantum states with $(d-1)$ levels. The presence of one extra degree of freedom in the Hilbert space of particles, which is not used in encoding, allows to achieve perfect transfer even in a uniform chain through a repeated measurement procedure with consecutive single site measurements. Apart from the first iteration, for which the time of evolution grows linearly with the size of the chain, in all other iterations, the evolution times are short and does not scale with the length. The…
A globally controlled scheme for quantum transport is proposed. The scheme works on a 1D chain of nearest neighbor coupled systems of qudits (finite dimension), or qunats (continuous variable), taking any arbitrary initial quantum state of the chain and producing a final quantum state which is perfectly spatially mirrored about the mid-point of the chain. As a particular novel application, the method can be used to transport continuous variable (CV) quantum states. A physical realization is proposed where it is shown how the quantum states of the microwave fields held in a chain of driven supe…
Quantum information transfer is an important part of quantum information processing. Several proposals for quantum information transfer along linear arrays of nearest-neighbor coupled qubits or spins were made recently. Perfect transfer was shown to exist in two models with specifically designed strongly inhomogeneous couplings. We show that perfect transfer occurs in an entire class of chains, including systems whose nearest-neighbor couplings vary only weakly along the chain. The key to these observations is the Jordan-Wigner mapping of spins to noninteracting lattice fermions which display …
Although a complete picture of the full evolution of complex quantum systems would certainly be the most desirable goal, for particular Quantum Information Processing schemes such an analysis is not necessary. When quantum correlations between only specific elements of a many-body system are required for the performance of a protocol, a more distinguished and specialised investigation is helpful. Here, we provide a striking example with the achievement of perfect state transfer in a spin chain without state initialisation, whose realisation has been shown to be possible in virtue of the correl…
We introduce an analytical $XX$ spin chain with asymmetrical transport properties. It has an even number $N+1$ of sites labeled by $n=0,\cdots N$. It does not exhibit perfect state transfer (PST) from end-to-end but rather from the first site to the next to last one. In fact, PST of one-excitation states takes place between the even sites: $n\leftrightarrow N-n-1$, $n=0,2,\cdots, N-1$; while states localized at a single odd site undergo fractional revival (FR) over odd sites only. Perfect return is witnessed at double the PST/FR time. The couplings and local magnetic fields are related to the …
We present a perfect state transfer protocol via a qubit chain with the evolution governed by the $xx$ Hamiltonian. In contrast to the recent protocol announced in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 101}, 230502 (2008)], our method does not demand any remote-cooperated initialization and sending classical information about measurement outcomes. We achieve the perfect state transfer only with the assumption of access to two spins at each end of the chain, while the initial state of the whole chain is irrelevant.
Anderson localisation is an important phenomenon arising in many areas of physics, and here we explore it in the context of quantum information devices. Finite dimensional spin chains have been demonstrated to be important devices for quantum information transport, and in particular can be engineered to allow for "perfect state transfer" (PST). Here we present extensive investigations of disordered PST spin chains, demonstrating spatial localisation and transport retardation effects, and relate these effects to conventional Anderson localisation. We provide thresholds for Anderson localisation…
We show how to efficiently send an M-partite entangled state along a spin chain of arbitrary size. Specifically, we show how an entangled M-partite W sate can be almost flawlessly transmitted from one end (Alice) to the other end (Bob) of a spin-1/2 chain described by a slightly modified XX model. We achieve an almost perfect transmission without employing external magnetic fields or modulating the coupling constants among the spins of the chain, the two standard approaches used to achieve a good transmission efficiency. Moreover, the protocol here proposed can be used to transform an M-partit…
Certain non-uniformly coupled spin chains can exhibit perfect transfer of quantum states from end to end. Motivated by recent experimental implementations, we extend the simplest such chain to next-to-nearest neighbour (NNN) couplings. It is shown analytically that perfect state transfer can be maintained under the extension and that end-to-end entanglement generation (fractional revival) can occur.
In a one-dimensional Heisenberg chain, we show that there are no sets of coupling strengths such that the evolution perfectly transfers a quantum state between the two ends of the chain without the addition of magnetic fields. In lieu of perfect transfer, we consider a range of options for achieving high quality transfer, whether in finite time, or via "pretty good" transfer where one waits long times in the hope of getting arbitrarily close to perfect transfer. In attempting to engineer arbitrarily accurate transfer, we explore a new paradigm that facilitates time estimates for achieving any …
In this work, we study transfer of coherence matrices along spin-1/2 chains of various length. Unlike higher order coherence matrices, 0-order coherence matrix can be perfectly transferred if its elements are properly fixed. In certain cases, to provide the perfect transfer, an extended receiver together with optimized its unitary transformation has to be included into the protocol. In this work, the asymptotic perfectly transferable 0-order coherence matrix for an infinitely long chain is considered and deviation of a perfectly transferred state from this asymptotic state is studied as a func…
Faithfully transferring the quantum state is essential for quantum information processing. Here we demonstrate a fast (in 84 ns) and high-fidelity (99.2%) transfer of arbitrary quantum states in a chain of four superconducting qubits with nearest-neighbor coupling. This transfer relies on full control of the effective couplings between neighboring qubits, which is realized only by our parametrically modulating the qubits without increasing circuit complexity. Once the couplings between qubits fulfill a specific ratio, perfect quantum state transfer can be achieved in a single step, and is ther…
We consider the perfect transfer of a state between arbitrary nodes of one-dimensional spin-1/2 chain with optimally engineered couplings. Motivated by the fact that such a system could be used as a data bus for connecting multiple quantum processors, we derive two necessary and sufficient conditions that have to be met in order to perfectly transfer a state between any two nodes and we employ them to examine both open and closed geometries. Analytical calculations and numerical optimizations are performed for both cases in order to determine the reachability of certain target states and to pr…
We propose a scheme for using a spin chain with fixed symmetry interaction as a channel for perfect quantum communication. The perfect quantum communication is determined by the eigenvalues that form a special arithmetical progression, the concrete interaction parameter $J_i$ is obtained as a function of integer and perfect transmission time $t_p$. There are infinite choices of $J_i$ for perfect transmission and one can design the channel according to the requirement of $t_p$. This scheme will provide more choices of spin chain for future experiment in quantum communication.
Perfect state transfer is possible in modulated spin chains, imperfections however are likely to corrupt the state transfer. We study the robustness of this quantum communication protocol in the presence of disorder both in the exchange couplings between the spins and in the local magnetic field. The degradation of the fidelity can be suitably expressed, as a function of the level of imperfection and the length of the chain, in a scaling form. In addition the time signal of fidelity becomes fractal. We further characterize the state transfer by analyzing the spectral properties of the Hamilton…
Dynamics of the one-dimensional open Ising chain under influence of $π$ -pulses is studied. It is shown that the application of a specific sequence of such instant kicks to selective spins stimulates arising of perfect dynamical pairwise entanglement between ends of the spin chain. Analytic formulas for the concurrence dynamics are derived. It is also shown that the time required to perfectly entangle the ends of the chains grows linearly with the number of spins in the chain. The final entangled state of the ending spins is always the same and does not depend on length the chain.
We study the ground-state entanglement of one-dimensional harmonic chains that are coupled to each other by a collective interaction as realized e.g. in an anisotropic ion crystal. Due to the collective type of coupling, where each chain interacts with every other one in the same way,the total system shows critical behavior in the direction orthogonal to the chains while the isolated harmonic chains can be gapped and non-critical. We derive lower and most importantly upper bounds for the entanglement, quantified by the von Neumann entropy, between a compact block of oscillators and its environm…
Analogs of Krawtchouk polynomials defined on a bi-lattice are introduced. They are shown to provide a (novel) spin chain with perfect transfer. Their characterization is given as well as their connection to the quadratic Hahn algebra
We present the study of a quantum Controlled-Controlled-Not gate, implemented in a chain of three nuclear spins weakly Ising interacting between all of them, that is, taking into account first and second neighbor spin interactions. This implementation is done using a single resonant $π$-pulse on the initial state of the system (digital and superposition). The fidelity parameter is used to determine the behavior of the CCN quantum gate as a function of the ratio of the second neighbor interaction coupling constant to the first neighbor interaction coupling constant ($J'/J$). We found that for $…
We review the subject of perfect state transfer; how one designs the (fixed) interactions of a chain of spins so that a quantum state, initially inserted on one end of the chain, is perfectly transferred to the opposite end in a fixed time. The perfect state transfer systems are then used as a constructive tool to design Hamiltonian implementations of other primitive protocols such as entanglement generation and signal amplification in measurements, before showing that, in fact, universal quantum computation can be implemented in this way.
A pulse traveling on a uniform nondissipative chain of $N$ masses connected by springs is soon destructured by dispersion. Here it is shown that a proper modulation of the masses and the elastic constants makes it possible to obtain a periodic dynamics and a perfect transmission of any kind of pulse between the chain ends, since the initial configuration evolves to its mirror image in the half period. This makes the chain to behave as a Newton's cradle. By a known algorithm based on orthogonal polynomials one can numerically solve the general inverse problem leading from the spectrum to the dy…
We show that using a slightly modified XX model for a spin-1/2 chain, one can transmit almost perfectly a maximally entangled two-qubit state from one end of the chain to the other one. This is accomplished without external fields or modulation of the coupling constants among the qubits. We also show that this strategy works for any size of the chain and is relatively robust to imperfections in the coupling constants among the qubits belonging to the chain. Actually, under certain scenarios of small disorder, we obtain better results than those predicted by the optimal ordered and noiseless ca…
The ability to transfer quantum information from one location to another with high fidelity is of central importance to quantum information science. Unfortunately for the simplest system of a uniform chain (a spin chain or a particle in a one-dimensional lattice), the state transfer time grows exponentially in the chain length $N$ at fixed fidelity. In this work we show that the addition of an impurity near each endpoint, coupled to the uniform chain with strength $w$, is sufficient to ensure efficient and high-fidelity state transfer. An eigenstate localized in the vicinity of the impurity ca…
We study the rectification of spin current in $XXZ$ chains segmented in two parts, each with a different anisotropy parameter. Using exact diagonalization and a matrix product states algorithm we find that a large rectification (of the order of $10^4$) is attainable even using a short chain of $N=8$ spins, when one half of the chain is gapless while the other has large enough anisotropy. We present evidence of diffusive transport when the current is driven in one direction and of a transition to an insulating behavior of the system when driven in the opposite direction, leading to a perfect di…
We have developed an efficient computational method to treat long, one-dimensional systems of strongly-interacting atoms forming self-assembled spin chains. Such systems can be used to realize many spin chain model Hamiltonians tunable by the external confining potential. As a concrete demonstration, we consider quantum state transfer in a Heisenberg spin chain and we show how to determine the confining potential in order to obtain nearly-perfect state transfer.
We conjecture that non-equilibrium boundary conditions generically trigger long range order in non-equilibrium steady states of locally interacting quantum chains. Our result is based on large scale density matrix renormalization group simulations of several models of quantum spin 1/2 chains which are driven far from equilibrium by coupling to a pair of unequal Lindblad reservoirs attached locally to the ends of the chain. In particular, we find a phase transition from exponentially decaying to long range spin-spin correlations in integrable Heisenberg XXZ chain by changing the anisotropy para…
Superconducting systems such as those modeled by the Kitaev Hamiltonian are found to exhibit the Zitterbewegung (ZB) oscillations. Remarkably, the dispersion relation in one-dimensional Kitaev systems allows for wavepackets of arbitrary size undergoing non-decaying ZB without any distortion, with the typical ZB amplitude being one lattice site. To motivate possible experimental interest in this dynamical aspect of superconducting systems, we further show that certain on-resonance modulation of the Hamiltonian parameter can be exploited to convert ZB oscillations to net drifting of particle's w…
It is shown how to systematically construct the $XX$ quantum spin chains with nearest-neighbor interactions that allow perfect state transfer (PST). Sets of orthogonal polynomials (OPs) are in correspondence with such systems. The key observation is that for any admissible one-excitation energy spectrum, the weight function of the associated OPs is uniquely prescribed. This entails the complete characterization of these PST models with the mirror symmetry property arising as a corollary. A simple and efficient algorithm to obtain the corresponding Hamiltonians is presented. A new model connect…
We study a strongly interacting chain of anyons with fusion rules determined by SO(5)2. The phase portrait is identified with a combination of numerical and analytical techniques. Several critical phases with different central charges and their corresponding transitions identified.
We discuss generalizations of quantum spin Hamiltonians using anyonic degrees of freedom. The simplest model for interacting anyons energetically favors neighboring anyons to fuse into the trivial (`identity') channel, similar to the quantum Heisenberg model favoring neighboring spins to form spin singlets. Numerical simulations of a chain of Fibonacci anyons show that the model is critical with a dynamical critical exponent z=1, and described by a two-dimensional conformal field theory with central charge c=7/10. An exact mapping of the anyonic chain onto the two-dimensional tricritical Ising…
Analytic mass-spring chains with dispersionless pulse transfer and fractional revival are presented. These are obtained using the properties of the para-Racah polynomials. This provides classical analogs of the quantum spin chains that realize important tasks in quantum information: perfect state transfer and entanglement generation.
Using the Lindblad equation approach, we derive the range of the parameters of an interacting one-dimensional electronic chain connected to two reservoirs in the large bias limit in which an optimal working point (corresponding to a change in the monotonicity of the stationary current as a function of the applied bias) emerges in the nonequilibrium stationary state. In the specific case of the one-dimensional spinless fermionic Hubbard chain, we prove that an optimal working point emerges in the dependence of the stationary current on the coupling between the chain and the reservoirs, both in …
We show that a perfect quantum state transmission can be realized through a spin chain possessing a commensurate structure of energy spectrum, which is matched with the corresponding parity. As an exposition of the mirror inversion symmetry discovered by Albanese et. al (quant-ph/0405029), the parity matched the commensurability of energy spectra help us to present the novel pre-engineered spin systems for quantum information transmission. Based on the these theoretical analysis, we propose a protocol of near-perfect quantum state transfer by using a ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with uniform…
We consider an exact solvable interacting spinful Kitaev chain which is a generalization of the Mattis-Nam model. A nearest-neighbor dimerized interaction favoring the production of disjoint molecules drives the quantum phase into an insulating one. The phases are characterized statically and dynamically in terms of magnetization and spin-singlet correlations by using the exact solution. The model is shown to be exactly solvable also in the presence of boundary interactions which are originated from a spin-singlet superconducting pairing and a magnetic field. We exploit the exact solution to i…
The field of quantum chaos originated in the study of spectral statistics for interacting many-body systems, but this heritage was almost forgotten when single-particle systems moved into the focus. In recent years new interest emerged in many-body aspects of quantum chaos. We study a chain of interacting, kicked spins and carry out a semiclassical analysis that is capable of identifying all kinds of genuin many-body periodic orbits. We show that the collective many-body periodic orbits can fully dominate the spectra in certain cases.
We study a harmonic system coupled to chain of first neighbor interacting oscillators. After deriving the exact dynamics of the system, we prove that one can effectively describe the exact dynamics by considering a suitable shorter chain. We provide the explicit expression for such an effective dynamics and we provide an upper bound on the error one makes considering it instead of the dynamics of the full chain. We eventually prove how error, timescale and number of modes in the truncated chain are related.
The Motzkin spin chain is a spin-1 model introduced in \cite{shor} as an example of a system exhibiting a high degree of quantum fluctuations whose ground state can be mapped to Motzkin paths that are generated with local equivalence moves. This model is difficult to solve in general but keeping just the height preserving local equivalence moves we show that the model becomes integrable which when projected to certain subspaces of the full Hilbert space is isomorphic to the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXX chain. In fact in the full Hilbert space the system is akin to two non-interacting spin-$\frac{1}{…
Coherent many-body quantum dynamics lies at the heart of quantum simulation and quantum computation. Both require coherent evolution in the exponentially large Hilbert space of an interacting many-body system. To date, trapped ions have defined the state of the art in terms of achievable coherence times in interacting spin chains. Here, we establish an alternative platform by reporting on the observation of coherent, fully interaction-driven quantum revivals of the magnetization in Rydberg-dressed Ising spin chains of atoms trapped in an optical lattice. We identify partial many-body revivals …
We study the time evolution of a single spin excitation state in certain linear spin chains, as a model for quantum communication. Some years ago it was discovered that when the spin chain data (the nearest neighbour interaction strengths and the magnetic field strengths) are related to the Jacobi matrix entries of Krawtchouk polynomials or dual Hahn polynomials, so-called perfect state transfer takes place. The extension of these ideas to other types of discrete orthogonal polynomials did not lead to new models with perfect state transfer, but did allow more insight in the general computation…
