The Spitzer high resolution spectra of 72 Seyfert galaxies from the 12$μ$m Galaxy Sample are presented and discussed. The presence of starburst components in these galaxies can be quantified by powerful mid-IR diagnostics tools (i.e. 11.25$μ$m PAH feature equivalent width and the H$_2$ emission line intensity), as well as the AGN dominance can be measured by specific fine structure line ratios (e.g. [NeV]/[NeII], [NeV]/[SiII], etc.). The two types of Seyfert galaxies do not show any statistical difference in our diagnostic tools. However, the Seyfert 2's showing hidden Broad Line Regions in spectro-polarimetric observations have on average an higher AGN dominance, a weaker star formation component and a warmer [60 - 25] spectral index than those without broad emission lines.
We present Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared spectra of 12 Seyfert 1.8 and 1.9 galaxies over the 5-38 um region. We compare the spectral characteristics of this sample to those of 58 Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies from the Spitzer archives. An analysis of the spectral shapes, the silicate 10 um feature and the emission line fluxes have enabled us to characterize the mid-IR properties of Seyfert 1.8/1.9s. We find that the equivalent widths of the 10 um silicate feature are generally weak in all Seyfert galaxies, as previously reported by several studies. The few Seyfert galaxies in this sa…
We are conducting a large observing program with the Spitzer Space Telescope to determine the mid-to-far infrared spectral energy distributions of a well-defined sample of 87 nearby, 12 micron-selected Seyfert galaxies. In this paper we present the results of IRS low-resolution spectroscopy of a statistically representative subsample of 51 of the galaxies (59%), with an analysis of the continuum shapes and a comparison of the Seyfert types. We find that the spectra clearly divide into groups based on their continuum shapes and spectral features. Some spectral features are clearly related to a …
A sample of 196 AGNs and ULIRGs observed by the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on Spitzer is analyzed to study the distribution of the strength of the 9.7 micron silicate feature. Average spectra are derived for quasars, Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 AGNs, and ULIRGs. We find that quasars are characterized by silicate features in emission and Seyfert 1s equally by emission or weak absorption. Seyfert 2s are dominated by weak silicate absorption, and ULIRGs are characterized by strong silicate absorption (mean apparent optical depth about 1.5). Luminosity distributions show that luminosities at rest fra…
The first high resolution Spitzer IRS 9-37um spectra of 29 Seyfert galaxies (about one quarter) of the 12um Active Galaxy Sample are presented and discussed. The high resolution spectroscopy was obtained with corresponding off-source observations. This allows excellent background subtraction, so that the continuum levels and strengths of weak emission lines are accurately measured. The result is several new combinations of emission line ratios, line/continuum and continuum/continuum ratios that turn out to be effective diagnostics of the strength of the AGN component in the IR emission of thes…
Optically--faint X-ray sources (those with f_X/f_R > 10) constitute about 20% of X-ray sources in deep surveys, and are potentially highly obscured and/or at high redshift. Their faint optical fluxes are generally beyond the reach of spectroscopy. For a sample of 20 optically--faint sources in CDFS, we compile 0.4--24 um photometry, relying heavily on Spitzer. We estimate photometric redshifts for 17 of these 20 sources. We find that these AGN are optically--faint both because they lie at significantly higher redshifts (median z ~ 1.6) than most X-ray--selected AGN, and because their spectra a…
The magnitude-limited catalog of the Southern Sky Redshift Survey (SSRS2), is used to characterize the properties of galaxies hosting Active Galactic Nuclei. Using emission-line ratios, we identify a total of 162 (3%) Seyfert galaxies out of the parent sample with 5399 galaxies. The sample contains 121 Seyfert 2 galaxies and 41 Seyfert 1. The SSRS2 Seyfert galaxies are predominantly in spirals of types Sb and earlier, or in galaxies with perturbed appearance as the result of strong interactions or mergers. Seyfert galaxies in this sample are twice as common in barred hosts than the non-Seyfert…
Seyfert nuclei are typical active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the local universe, which are thought to be powered by gas accretion onto a supermassive black hole (SMBH). The dynamical effect exerted either by non-axisymmetric gravitational potential (such as a stellar bar) or by interaction with other galaxies has been often considered to cause the efficient gas fueling. However, recent systematic studies for large samples of Seyfert nuclei have shown that; 1) Seyfert nuclei do not prefer barred galaxies as their hosts, and 2) only $\simeq$ 10% of Seyfert galaxies have companion galaxies. These …
The operational conditions found by $BeppoSAX$ in observing nearby (z$\leq$0.1) Seyferts were reproduced for $Simbol$-$X$ in order to simulate a realistic final database of the mission. The results indicate that, even in the worst conditions, the $Simbol$-$X$ archive of pointings will allow to fully characterize the high-energy spectrum of nearby Seyferts and, most importantly, to obtain solid results on R and Ec (fundamental to model the cosmic X-Ray background, CXB). The measurement of the inclination angle of the accretion disk will be possible for $\sim$15 objects allowing to directly test…
We summarize recent results on the infrared (IR) nuclear properties of Seyfert galaxies. 100% of all Seyfert 1-1.9$ and ~50% of all Seyfert 2s in the CfA and RSA samples observed with HST/NICMOS show nuclear point sources at 1.6micron. We find that the unresolved emission is variable in 9 out of the 14 Seyferts with duplicate observations, indicating a non-stellar origin. We have also put together non-stellar 0.4-16micron spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for the entire CfA sample of Seyfert galaxies. The shape of the SEDs for a complete sample of AGN can be used to constrain torus models.W…
New far-infrared photometry with ISOPHOT, onboard the Infrared Space Observatory, is presented for 58 galaxies with homogeneous published data for another 32 galaxies all belonging to the 12 micron galaxy sample. In total 29 Seyfert 1's, 35 Seyfert 2's and 12 starburst galaxies, about half of the 12 micron active galaxy sample, plus 14 normal galaxies for comparison. The ISO and the IRAS data are used to define color-color diagrams and spectral energy distributions (SED). Thermal dust emission at two temperatures (one cold at 15-30K and one warm at 50-70K) can fit the 60-200 micron SED, with a…
We present the results of IRS low-resolution spectroscopy of 51 Seyfert galaxies, part of a large Spitzer observing program to determine the mid-to-far infrared spectral energy distributions of a well-defined sample of 87 nearby, 12 micron-selected Seyferts. We find that the spectra clearly divide into groups based on their continuum shapes and spectral features. The infrared spectral types appear to be related to the Seyfert types. Some features are clearly related to a starburst contribution to the IR spectrum, while the observed power-law continuum shapes, attributed to the AGN, may be dust…
The $BeppoSAX$ archive is currently the largest reservoir of high sensitivity simultaneous soft and hard-X ray data of Seyfert galaxies. From this database all the Seyfert galaxies (105 objects of which 43 are type I and 62 are type II) with redshift lower than 0.1 have been selected and analyzed in a homogeneous way (Dadina 2007). The X-ray data so collected allow to infer the average spectral properties of nearby Seyfert galaxies included in the original sample and, most notably: the photon index ($Γ$$\sim$1.8), the high-energy cut-off (Ec$\sim$290 keV), and the relative amount of reflection…
The Spitzer Space Telescope is pushing into new frontiers in high redshift astronomy. Closer to home, Spitzer is making an equally large impact on our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. In this contribution we present mid-infrared diagnostics based largely on data from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). Our main result is that these mid-infrared diagnostics effectively constrain a target's dominant power source. The combination of a high ionization line index and PAH strength serves as an efficient discriminant between AGN and star-forming nuclei, confirming pro…
We have performed a spectroscopic study of 7 Type 2 QSOs using the mid-infrared spectrometer IRS on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. These are (to our knowledge) the first mid-IR spectra of X-ray selected QSO2s taken. The objects have been selected according to their high intrinsic luminosities and column densities in the X-rays. Their spectra strongly differ from template spectra of Type 2 AGN at lower luminosities. They do not exhibit strong PAH dust emission features from circum-nuclear star forming regions, typical for lower luminosity Type 2 Seyfert galaxies or other previously used QSO…
We present ESO - Very Large Telescope and ESA - Infrared Space Observatory 3 to 4 $μ$m spectra of Seyfert 2 nuclei as compared to our galactic center lines of sight. The diffuse interstellar medium probed in both environments displays the characteristic 3.4 $μ$m aliphatic CH stretch absorptions of refractory carbonaceous material. The profile of this absorption feature is similar in all sources, indicating the CH$_2$/CH$_3$ ratios of the carbon chains present in the refractory components of the grains are the same in Seyfert 2 inner regions. At longer wavelengths the circumstellar contaminatio…
The infrared is a key wavelength regime for probing the dusty, obscured nuclear regions of active galaxies. We present results from an infrared study of 87 nearby Seyfert galaxies using the Spitzer Space Telescope and ground-based telescopes. Combining detailed modelling of the 3 - 100 micron spectral energy distributions with mid-IR spectral diagnostics and near-infrared observations, we find broad support for the unified model of AGNs. The IR emission of Seyfert 1s and 2s is consistent with their having the same type of central engine viewed at a different orientation. The nature of the puta…
A complete flux-limited sample of 50 galaxies is presented having f_ν(24um) > 10mJy, chosen from a survey with the Multiband Imaging Photometer on Spitzer (MIPS) of 8.2 deg^{2} within the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey region in Bootes (NDWFS). Spectra obtained with the low-resolution modules of the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer (IRS) are described for 36 galaxies within this sample; 25 show strong PAH emission features characteristic of starbursts, and 11 show silicate absorption or emission, emission lines, or featureless spectra characteristic of AGN. Infrared or optical spectral classifica…
We present the results of Spitzer IRS low-resolution infrared 5-35 micron spectroscopy of nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z < 0.15. We focus on the search for the signatures of buried active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the complete sample of ULIRGs classified optically as non-Seyferts (LINERs or HII-regions). In addition to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features at 6.2 micron, 7.7 micron, and 11.3 micron, the conventional tool of starburst-AGN separation, we use the optical depths of the 9.7 micron and 18 micron silicate dust absorption features to infer the g…
We use hard X-ray data for an "optimal" sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies to derive the distribution of the gaseous absorbing column densities among obscured active nuclei in the local Universe. Of all Seyfert 2 galaxies in the sample, 75% are heavily obscured (N_H > 10^23 cm^-2) and about half are Compton thick (N_H > 10^24 cm^-2). Intermediate type 1.8-1.9 Seyferts are characterized by an average N_H much lower than "strict" Seyfert 2s. No correlation is found between N_H and the intrinsic luminosity of the nuclear source. This N_H distribution has important consequences for the synthesis of the …
We present the results of a Spitzer search for obscured AGN in the Chandra Deep Field-North, using both radio-excess and mid-infrared power-law selection. AGN selected via the former technique tend to lie at z ~ 1, have SEDs dominated by the 1.6 micron stellar bump, and have Seyfert-like X-ray luminosities (when detected in the X-ray). In contrast, the IRAC (3.6-8.0 micron) power-law selected AGN lie at higher redshifts of z ~ 2, and comprise a significant fraction of the most X-ray luminous AGN in the CDF-N. While there is almost no overlap in the AGN samples selected via these two methods, t…
IRAC excels at detecting distant objects. Due to a combination of the shapes of the spectral energy distributions of galaxies and the low background achieved from space, IRAC reaches greater depth in comparable exposure time at 3.6 and 4.5 micron than any ground- or space-based facility currently can at 2.2 micron. Furthermore, the longer wavelengths probed by IRAC enable studies of the rest-frame optical and near-infrared light of galaxies and AGN to much higher redshift than is possible from the ground. This white paper explores the merits of different survey strategies for studying the dist…
(Abridged) Cold and warm absorbers have beeen detected in all types of active galaxies (AGN) from low to high redshift. This gas, located in the black hole region of AGN, is thought to play an important role in AGN unification scenarios, in explaining the X-ray background, in black hole growth and AGN evolution. We provide a review of the observations of dusty and dust-free warm and cold absorbers at low and high redshift, including most recent results and exciting questions still open. Emphasis is on the science issues that we will be able to address with XEUS for the first time, particularly…
We have studied the relationship between the [O IV] lambda 25.89 micron emission line luminosities, obtained from Spitzer spectra, the X-ray continua in the 2-10 keV band, primarily from ASCA, and the 14-195 keV band obtained with the SWIFT/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), for a sample of nearby (z < 0.08) Seyfert galaxies. For comparison, we have examined the relationship between the [O III] 5007, the 2-10 keV and the 14-195 keV luminosities for the same set of objects. We find that both the [O IV] and [O III] luminosities are well-correlated with the BAT luminosities. On the other hand, the [O I…
An unbiased estimate of the average intrinsic X-ray properties and column density distribution of Seyfert galaxies in the local Universe is crucial to validate unified models of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and to synthesis models for the X-ray background. We present here preliminary results obtained from an on-going XMM-Newton study (~250 ks awarded in the EPIC GT) on a well-defined, statistically complete, and significant sample of nearby Seyfert galaxies.
We have conducted a high-resolution ``3D'' imaging survey of the CO(1--0), HCN(1--0), and HCO$^+$(1--0) lines toward the central a few kpc regions of the Seyfert and starburst galaxies in the local universe using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. We detected luminous HCN(1--0) emissions toward a considerable fraction of these Seyfert galaxies (10 of 12 in our sub-sample), which indicated that some of these Seyfert galaxies, such as NGC 3079, NGC 3227, NGC 4051, NGC 6764, and NGC 7479, are indeed accompanied with compact nuclear starburst, given the tight correlation between the HCN(1--0) luminosi…
Mid-infrared diagnostics are presented for a large portion of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) sample plus archival data from the Infrared Space Observatory and the Spitzer Space Telescope. Our main result is that these mid-infrared diagnostics effectively constrain a target's dominant power source. The combination of a high ionization line index and PAH strength serves as an efficient discriminant between AGN and star-forming nuclei, confirming progress made with ISO spectroscopy on starbursting and ultraluminous infrared galaxies. The sensitivity of Spitzer allows us to pr…
We present new evidence for mature stellar populations with ages >100Myr in massive galaxies (M_stellar>10^10M_sun) seen at a time when the Universe was less than 1Gyr old. We analyse the prominent detections of two z~6 star-forming galaxies (SBM03#1 & #3) made at wavelengths corresponding to the rest-frame optical using the IRAC camera onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. We had previously identified these galaxies in HST/ACS GOODS images of Chandra Deep Field South through the "i-drop" Lyman break technique, and subsequently confirmed spectroscopically with the Keck telescope. The new Spitze…
We report the detection of correlated anisotropies in the Cosmic Far-Infrared Background at 160 microns. We measure the power spectrum in the Spitzer/SWIRE Lockman Hole field. It reveals unambiguously a strong excess above cirrus and Poisson contributions, at spatial scales between 5 and 30 arcminutes, interpreted as the signature of infrared galaxy clustering. Using our model of infrared galaxy evolution we derive a linear bias b=1.74 \pm 0.16. It is a factor 2 higher than the bias measured for the local IRAS galaxies. Our model indicates that galaxies dominating the 160 microns correlated an…
We present the analysis of a new flux-limited sample of bright quasars and Seyfert 1 galaxies in an effective area of 611 square deg, drawn from the Hamburg/ESO survey. We confirm recent claims that bright quasars have a higher surface density than previously thought. Special care was taken to avoid morphological and photometric biases against low-redshift quasars, and about 50 % of the sample objects are at z < 0.3, spanning a range of three decades in luminosity. While our derived space densities for low-luminosity Seyfert 1 nuclei are consistent with those found in the literature, we find t…
The well-documented E1 relationships are first extended to infrared color $α(60,25)$ and flux ratio [OIII]/H$β_{\rm{n}}$ by comparing emission line properties to continuum properties in infrared wavelength. Both direct correlations and a principle component analysis are used in a sample of 50 IRAS IR-selected Seyfert 1.5 galaxies. In addition to confirm the correlations of E1 in Boroson & Green (1992), our Eigenvector 1 turns out to be dominated by mid-infrared color $α$(60,25), and most strongly effected by RFe, [OIII]/H$β_{\rm{n}}$, and EW(H$β_{\rm{b}}$). Our analysis indicate that the objec…
We present Spitzer 3.6-160 micron images, Spitzer mid-infrared spectra, and JCMT SCUBA 850 micron images of the Sombrero Galaxy (NGC 4594), an Sa galaxy with a 10^9 M_solar low luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN). The brightest infrared sources in the galaxy are the nucleus and the dust ring. The spectral energy distribution of the AGN demonstrates that, while the environment around the AGN is a prominent source of mid-infrared emission, it is a relatively weak source of far-infrared emission, as had been inferred for AGN in previous research. The weak nuclear 160 micron emission and the …
Obscured active galactic nuclei, which are classified optically as type 2 (narrow-line) Seyfert galaxies in the local universe, are by far the most promising candidates for the origin of the hard (2-10 keV) X-ray background radiation. However, optical follow-up observations of faint X-ray sources in deep Chandra images have revealed surprising numbers of apparently normal galaxies at modest redshift. Such objects represent ~40-60% of the sources classified in deep Chandra surveys, raising the possibility that the X-ray galaxy population has evolved with cosmic time. Alternatively, most of the …
We report here preliminary results from a survey of nearby Seyfert galaxies using the EPIC CCDs on board XMM-Newton. The total sample consists of 28 Seyfert galaxies, and constitute a well-defined, complete (B<12.5 mag), and volume-limited (D<22 Mpc) sample of Seyfert galaxies in the northern (Delta > 0 deg.) hemisphere. The survey has been initiated in June, 2001, and we report here the results for the 6 objects analyzed so far, namely: NGC3185, NGC3486, NGC3941, NGC4138, NGC4565, and NGC5033. The main goal of this survey is to obtain a better and unbiased understanding of the ``typical'' Sey…
Selection of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the infrared allows the discovery of AGN whose optical emission is extinguished by dust. In this paper, we use the Spitzer Space Telescope First Look Survey (FLS) to assess what fraction of AGN with mid-infrared luminosities comparable to quasars are missed in optical quasar surveys due to dust obscuration. We begin by using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) database to identify 54 quasars within the 4 deg^2 extragalactic FLS. These quasars occupy a distinct region in mid-infrared color space by virtue of their strong, red, continua. This has allo…
Using Spitzer IRAC mid-infrared imaging from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey, we study z_850-dropout sources in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. After carefully removing contaminating flux from foreground sources, we clearly detect two z_850-dropouts at 3.6 micron and 4.5 micron, while two others are marginally detected. The mid-infrared fluxes strongly support their interpretation as galaxies at z~7, seen when the Universe was only 750 Myr old. The IRAC observations allow us for the first time to constrain the rest-frame optical colors, stellar masses, and ages of the highest redshift…
To study the distribution of star formation and dust emission within nearby galaxies, we measured five morphological parameters in the 3.6 and 24 micron wave bands for 65 galaxies in the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) and 8 galaxies that were serendipitously observed by SINGS. The morphological parameters demonstrate strong variations along the Hubble sequence, including statistically significant differences between S0/a-Sab and Sc-Sd galaxies. Early-type galaxies are generally found to be compact, centralized, symmetric sources in the 24 micron band, while late-type galaxies …
In the course of an extensive campaign to measure radial velocities of galaxies in a selected sample of compact groups photometrically studied by de Carvalho et al. (1994), we report the discovery of a system very rich in starburst galaxies and AGNs. This is the system HCG 16 of Hickson's (1982) catalog of CGs. The 7 brightest galaxies form a kinematical group. From their spectral characteristics, we have identified one Seyfert 2 galaxy, two LINERs and three starburst galaxies. Thus, HCG 16 appears to be a dense concentration of active galaxies. In our sample of 17 Hickson groups, HCG 16 is un…
We present an updated phenomenological galaxy evolution model to fit the Spitzer 24, 70 and 160 microns number counts as well as all the previous mid and far infrared observations. Only a minor change of the co-moving luminosity density distribution in the previous model (Lagache, Dole, Puget 2003), combined with a slight modification of the starburst template spectra mainly between 12 and 30 microns, are required to fit all the data available. We show that the peak in the MIPS 24 micron counts is dominated by galaxies with redshift between 1 and 2, with a non negligible contribution from the …
We present a study of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068 using mid- and far- infrared data acquired with the IRAC, IRS, and MIPS instruments aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The images show extensive 8 um and 24 um emission coinciding with star formation in the inner spiral approximately 15" (1 kpc) from the nucleus, and a bright complex of star formation 47" (3 kpc) SW of the nucleus. The brightest 8 um PAH emission regions coincide remarkably well with knots observed in an Halpha image. Strong PAH features at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.3 um are detected in IRS spectra measured at numerous loca…
The Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) has been used to obtain low and moderate resolution spectra of the dust and gas-rich quasar APM08279+5255 (z=3.91). Broad Paschen $α$ and $β$ recombination lines of hydrogen were detected at wavelengths of 9.235 and 6.315microns, as well as a strong, red continuum that is a smooth power law over the observed (rest frame) wavelength range 5.3-35microns (1.08 - 7.1microns). The observed P$α$/P$β$ line flux ratio of 1.05$\pm$0.2 is far from the case B value of ~2 and simple models of high density, high optical depth ionized…
As the densest galaxy environments in the universe, clusters are vital to our understanding of the role that environment plays in galaxy formation and evolution. Unfortunately, the evolution of high-redshift cluster galaxies is poorly understood because of the ``cluster desert'' that exists at 1 < z < 2. The SpARCS collaboration is currently carrying out a 1-passband (z') imaging survey which, when combined with the pre-existing 50 square degree 3.6 micron Spitzer SWIRE Legacy Survey data, will efficiently detect hundreds of clusters in the cluster desert using an infrared application of the w…
Starbursts are important because they can serve as local analogs of the processes that were important in the origin and early evolution of galaxies and in the heating and chemical enrichment of the inter-galactic medium. They may also play an important role in the AGN phenomenon. In this contribution I review the use of UV spectroscopic diagnostics that can be `calibrated' at low-redshift and then applied at high redshift. From the analysis of the UV properties of local starbursts we have learned: 1) dust dramatically affects our view of high-mass star-formation 2) more metal-rich starbursts a…
We use data from the first epoch of observations with the IRAC/Spitzer for the GOODS to detect and study a collection of LBGs at z ~ 6 to 5 in the HUDF, six of which have spectroscopic confirmation. At these redshifts, IRAC samples rest-frame optical light in the range 0.5 to 0.8 um, where the effects of dust extinction are smaller and the sensitivity to light from evolved stars is greater than at shorter, rest-frame UV observable from the ground or with the HST. As such, it provides useful constraints on the ages and masses of these galaxies' stellar populations. We find that the SEDs for man…
The ratio between far-ultraviolet (FUV) and infrared (IR) luminosity densities from z=0 to z=1 is discussed by using the luminosity functions (LFs) of both wavelengths. The FUV LF (z=0-1) based on GALEX has been reported by Arnouts et al. (2005), whilst for the IR LF, we used the IRAS PSCz 60-um LF for the local universe and the Spitzer 15-um LF at higher-z as used by Le Floch et al. (2005). Both luminosity densities show a significant evolutionary trend, but the IR evolves much faster than the FUV. Consequently, the ratio $ρ_{dust}/ρ_{FUV}$ increases toward higher-z, from 4 (local) to 15 (z =…
We present the highest spatial and spectral resolution near-infrared data to date of the $\sim~10^{13}~h^{-2}~L_{\sun}$ {\sl IRAS} source FSC 15307+3252 at $z = 0.93$, apparently the most luminous galaxy in the known Universe. Deep $K$-band (2.2 \micron) images taken in 0\farcs4 seeing at the W.\ M.\ Keck Telescope reveal three components within 2\arcsec. The dominant component has a surface brightness profile well-characterized by an $r^{1/4}$ law and a nucleus which is stellar in appearance with extended structure, possibly a second nucleus $\sim$~0\farcs5 away. Our 1.1--1.4~\micron\ spectru…
Recently, the existence of geometrically thick dust structures in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) has been directly proven with the help of mid-infrared interferometry. The observations are consistent with a two-component model made up of a geometrically thin and warm central disk, surrounded by a colder, fluffy torus component. In an exploratory study, we investigate one possible physical mechanism, which could produce such a structure, namely the effect of stellar feedback from a young nuclear star cluster on the interstellar medium in centres of AGN. The model is realised with the help of the …
We measure the ages, stellar masses, and star formation histories of z~6 galaxies, observed within 1Gyr of the Big Bang. We use imaging from HST and Spitzer from the public "Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey", coupled with ground-based near-infrared imaging, to measure the spectral energy distributions from 0.8-5microns, spanning the rest-frame UV and optical. From our sample of ~50 i-drop Lyman-break star-forming galaxies in GOODS-South with z'(AB)<27mag, we focus on ~30 with reliable photometric or spectroscopic redshifts. Half of these are confused with foreground sources at Spitzer r…
We have completed an optical spectroscopic survey of the nuclear regions (r < 200 pc) of a large sample of nearby galaxies. Although the main objectives of the survey are to search for low-luminosity active galactic nuclei and to quantify their luminosity function, the database can be used for a variety of other purposes. This paper presents measurements of the spectroscopic parameters for the 418 emission-line nuclei, along with a compilation of the global properties of all 486 galaxies in the survey. Stellar absorption generally poses a serious obstacle to obtaining accurate measurement of e…
The ~800 optically unseen (R>25.5) 24mum-selected sources in the complete Spitzer First Look Survey sample (Fadda et al. 2006) with F[24mum]>0.35 mJy are found to be very strongly clustered. If, as indicated by several lines of circumstantial evidence, they are ultraluminous far-IR galaxies at z ~ [1.6-2.7], the amplitude of their spatial correlation function is very high. The associated comoving clustering length is estimated to be r_0=14.0_{-2.4}^{+2.1} Mpc, value which puts these sources amongst the most strongly clustered populations of our known universe. Their 8mum-24mum colours suggest …
We report on IRAC-4.5mic, IRAC-8.0mic and MIPS-24mic deep observations of 16 Gamma-Ray Burst (GRBs) host galaxies performed with the Spitzer Space Telescope, and we investigate in the thermal infrared the presence of evolved stellar populations and dust-enshrouded star-forming activity associated with these objects. Our sample is derived from GRBs that were identified with sub-arcsec localization between 1997 and 2001, and only a very small fraction (~20%) of the targeted sources is detected down to f_4.5mic ~3.5microJy and f_24mic ~85microJy (3sigma). This likely argues against a population d…
The VLBA and the VLA have been used to image the continuum radio emission from Mrk 231, a Seyfert 1 galaxy and the brightest infrared galaxy in the local universe. The smallest scales reveal a double source less than 2 pc in extent. The components of this central source have minimum brightness temperatures of 10^9 to 10^{10} K, spectral turnovers between 2 and 10 GHz, and appear to define the galaxy nucleus plus the inner regions of a jet. The components may be free-free absorbed or synchtrotron self-absorbed. On larger scales, the images confirm a previously known north-south triple source ex…
By combining the 0.12 square degree F814W Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Spitzer MIPS 24 micron imaging in the First Look Survey (FLS), we investigate the properties of interacting and merging Mid-Infrared bright and faint sources at 0.2< z <1.3. We find a marginally significant increase in the pair fraction for MIPS 24 micron detected, optically selected close pairs, pair fraction=0.25+/-0.10 at z~1, in contrast to 0.11+/-0.08 at z~0.4, while galaxies below our 24 micron MIPS detection limit show a pair fraction consistent with zero at all redshifts. Additionally, 24 micron detected galaxie…
We present mid-infrared observations of AGN in the GOODS fields, performed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. These are the deepest infrared and X-ray fields to date and cover a total area of ~0.1 square degrees. AGN are selected on the basis of their hard (2-8 keV) X-ray emission. The median AGN infrared luminosity is at least 10 times larger than the median for normal galaxies with the same redshift distribution, suggesting that the infrared emission is dominated by the central nucleus. The X-ray to infrared luminosity ratios of GOODS AGN, most of which are at 0.5<z<1.5, are similar to the va…
We present mid-IR spectral decomposition of a sample of 48 Spitzer-selected ULIRGs spanning z~1-3 and likely L_IR~10^12-10^13Lsun. Our study aims at quantifying the star-formation and AGN processes in these sources which recent results suggest have evolved strongly between the observed epoch and today. To do this, we study the mid-IR contribution of PAH emission, continuum, and extinction. About 3/4 of our sample are continuum- (i.e. AGN) dominated sources, but ~60% of these show PAH emission, suggesting the presence of star-formation activity. These sources have redder mid-IR colors than typi…
We present HST NICMOS+ACS and Spitzer IRAC+MIPS observations of 41 galaxies at 2<z<3.5 in the FIRES MS1054 field with red and blue rest-frame optical colors. About half of the galaxies are very compact (effective radii r_e < 1 kpc) at rest-frame optical wavelengths, the others are extended (1< r_e < 10 kpc). For reference, 1 kpc corresponds to 0.12 arcsec at z=2.5 in the adopted cosmology. We separate actively star forming galaxies from quiescent galaxies by modeling their rest-frame UV-NIR SEDs. The star forming galaxies span the full range of sizes, while the quiescent galaxies all have r_e<…
We present the first detailed spectroscopic study of field galaxies up to z=0.3 from the I-magnitude limited CFRS sample. In this complete sample, we find that about half of the objects are blue emission-line galaxies. Using line ratio diagram and photoionization models, we show that in roughly half of these emission-line galaxies, ionization by hot stars cannot account for the observed line ratios. Their spectra have properties intermediate between Seyfert 2 galaxies and low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs). Their number density (about 20%) relative to the total number of gal…
The z=2.286 IRAS galaxy F10214+4724 remains one of the most luminous galaxies in the Universe, despite its gravitational lens magnification. We present optical and near-infrared spectra of F10214+4724, with clear evidence for three distinct components: lines of width ~1000 km/s from a Seyfert-II nucleus; <~200 km/s lines which are likely to be associated with star formation; and a broad ~4000 km/s CIII] 1909ang emission line which is blue-shifted by ~1000 km/s with respect to the Seyfert-II lines. Our study of the Seyfert-II component leads to several new results, including: (i) From the doubl…
We present results from Chandra X-ray and Spitzer mid-infrared observations of the interacting galaxy pair NGC6872/IC4970 in the Pavo galaxy group and show that the smaller companion galaxy IC4970 hosts a highly obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN). The 0.5-10 keV X-ray luminosity of the nucleus is variable, increasing by a factor 2.9 to 1.7 x 10^{42} erg/s (bright state) on ~100 ks timescales. The X-ray spectrum of the is heavily absorbed (N_H = 3 x 10^{23} cm^{-2}) for power law models with Gamma = 1.5-2.0 and shows a clear 6.4 keV Fe Kalpha line with equivalent width of 144-195 eV. Limits…
We present new determinations of the local sub-mm luminosity functions, solving the ``sub-mm Olbers' Paradox.'' We also present predictions of source counts and luminosity functions in current and future far-infrared to sub-mm surveys. Using the sub-mm colour temperature relations from the SCUBA Local Universe Galaxy Survey, and the discovery of excess 450 micron excess emission in these galaxies, we interpolate and extrapolate the IRAS detections to make predictions of the SEDs of all 15411 PSC-z galaxies from 50-1300 microns. Despite the long extrapolations we find excellent agreement with (…
