The infrared is a key wavelength regime for probing the dusty, obscured nuclear regions of active galaxies. We present results from an infrared study of 87 nearby Seyfert galaxies using the Spitzer Space Telescope and ground-based telescopes. Combining detailed modelling of the 3 - 100 micron spectral energy distributions with mid-IR spectral diagnostics and near-infrared observations, we find broad support for the unified model of AGNs. The IR emission of Seyfert 1s and 2s is consistent with their having the same type of central engine viewed at a different orientation. The nature of the putative torus is becoming clearer; in particular we present evidence that it is likely a clumpy medium. Mid-infrared correlations between tracers of star formation and AGN ionizing luminosity reveal the starburst-AGN connection implied by the black hole/bulge mass relation, however it is not yet clear if this is due to feedback.
In this letter we present clear evidence that Mrk 573 is an obscured Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) and not an archetypal Seyfert 2, as it has been classified until now. Only three galaxies have been proposed as members of this class, prior to this work. Here we report near-infrared spectroscopic data taken with LIRIS on the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (WHT). Our high quality near-infrared nuclear spectrum in the 0.88-1.35 micron wavelength range shows the permitted O I 1.128,1.317 micron narrow lines, the Fe II 9200-Ålines and the Fe II 1-micron lines, together with a relatively broad com…
We examine 112 Seyfert galaxies observed by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) at 1.6 microns. We find that ~50% of the Seyfert 2.0 galaxies which are part of the Revised Shapeley-Ames (RSA) Catalog or the CfA redshift sample contain unresolved continuum sources at 1.6 microns. All but a couple of the Seyfert 1.0-1.9 galaxies display unresolved continuum sources. The unresolved sources have fluxes of order a mJy, near-infrared luminosities of order 10^41 erg/s and absolute magnitudes M_H ~-16. Comparison non-Seyfert galaxies from the RSA Catalog display significantly fewer (~20%), somewhat lower…
New far-infrared photometry with ISOPHOT, onboard the Infrared Space Observatory, is presented for 58 galaxies with homogeneous published data for another 32 galaxies all belonging to the 12 micron galaxy sample. In total 29 Seyfert 1's, 35 Seyfert 2's and 12 starburst galaxies, about half of the 12 micron active galaxy sample, plus 14 normal galaxies for comparison. The ISO and the IRAS data are used to define color-color diagrams and spectral energy distributions (SED). Thermal dust emission at two temperatures (one cold at 15-30K and one warm at 50-70K) can fit the 60-200 micron SED, with a…
We discuss the properties of compact nuclear radio components in Seyfert galaxies from the extended 12-micron AGN sample of Rush et al.(1993). Our main results can be summarised as follows. Type 1 and type 2 Seyferts produce compact radio components which are indistinguishable in strength and aspect, indicating that their central engines are alike as proposed by the unification model. Infrared IRAS fluxes are more closely correlated with low-resolution radio fluxes than high-resolution radio fluxes, suggesting that they are dominated by kiloparsec-scale, extra-nuclear emission regions; extra-n…
We present infrared 2.8-4.1 micron slit spectra of 32 Seyfert 2 galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. The 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission feature was used to estimate the absolute magnitude of a compact nuclear starburst (< a few 100 pc in size) that is presumed to have occurred in the outer region of an obscuring dusty molecular torus around a central supermassive black hole. We detected 3.3 micron PAH emission in 11 of the 32 Seyfert 2 nuclei in our sample, providing evidence for the presence of compact nuclear starbursts in a significant fraction of Seyfert 2 …
We present a study of Seyfert 1.5-2.0 galaxies observed at two epochs with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) at 1.6 microns. We find that unresolved nuclear emission from 9 of 14 nuclei varies at the level of 10-40% on timescales of 0.7-14 months, depending upon the galaxy. A control sample of Seyfert galaxies lacking unresolved sources and galaxies lacking Seyfert nuclei show less than 3% instrumental variation in equivalent aperture measurements. This proves that the unresolved sources are non-stellar and associated with the central pc of active galactic nuclei. Unresolved sources in Seyfert …
We report on infrared K- (2-2.5 micron) and L-band (2.8-4.1 micron) slit spectroscopy of 23 Seyfert 1 galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission feature at 3.3 micron in the L band is primarily used to investigate nuclear star-forming activity in these galaxies. The 3.3 micron PAH emission is detected in 10 sources (=43%), demonstrating that detection of nuclear star-formation in a significant fraction of Seyfert 1 galaxies is now feasible. For the PAH-detected nuclei, the surface brightness values of the PAH emission are as high as those of typ…
We present near-infrared K-band slit spectra of the nuclei of 25 Seyfert 2 galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. The strength of the CO absorption features at 2.3-2.4 micron produced by stars is measured in terms of a spectroscopic CO index. A clear anti-correlation between the observed CO index and the nuclear K-L color is present, suggesting that a featureless hot dust continuum heated by an AGN contributes significantly to the observed K-band fluxes in the nuclei of Seyfert 2 galaxies. After correction for this AGN contribution, we estimate nuclear stellar K-band luminosities for all s…
We present 263 optical and near-infrared (NIR) images for 42 Seyfert 1s and 48 Seyfert 2s, selected from the Extended 12-micron Galaxy Sample. Elliptically-averaged profiles are derived from the images, and isophotal radii and magnitudes are calculated from these. We also report virtual aperture photometry, that judging from comparison with previous work, is accurate to roughly 0.05mag in the optical, and 0.07mag in the NIR. Our B-band isophotal magnitude and radii, obtained from ellipse fitting, are in good agreement with those of RC3. When compared with the B band, V, I, J, and K isophotal d…
We have studied the relationship between the high- and low-ionization [O IV] lambda 25.89 micron, [Ne III] lambda 15.56 micron and [Ne II] lambda 12.81 micron emission lines with the aim of constraining the active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star formation contributions for a sample of 103 Seyfert galaxies. We used the [O IV] and [Ne II] emission as tracers for the AGN power and star formation to investigate the ionization state of the emission-line gas. We find that Seyfert 2 galaxies have, on average, lower [O IV]/[Ne II] ratios than those of Seyfert 1 galaxies. This result suggests two possib…
We present 8.4 GHz VLA A-configuration observations of 87 sources from the mid-infrared-selected AGN sample of Rush et al (1993). These 0.25 arcsec resolution observations allow elongated radio structures tens of parsecs in size to be resolved and enable radio components smaller than 3.5 arcsec to be isolated from diffuse galactic disc emission. When combined with previous data, matched radio observations covering ninety percent of the sample have been collected and these represent the largest sub-arcsecond-resolution radio imaging survey of a homogeneously-selected sample of Seyfert galaxies …
We propose a new diagnostic of the ``dusty torus'' model for Seyfert nuclei. Dust grains in the torus are heated by the nuclear continuum, and reradiate mostly in the mid-infrared wavelengths. From the torus geometry, it is predicted that the emission at lambda < 10 micron has strong dependence on the viewing angle. Since the dependence is predicted to be insignificant at lambda > 10 micron, we study the flux ratio between 3.5 micron (L band) and 25 micron; R(L,25) = log [(nu_3.5 um S_nu_3.5 um)/(nu_25 um S_nu_25 um)]. In three different samples (optically selected, X-ray selected, and infrare…
The sample of IRAS galaxies with spectral energy distributions that peak near 60 microns are called Sixty Micron Peakers (SMPs or 60PKs). Their generally peculiar and amorphous morphologies, hot dust and lack of a cirrus component have been interpreted as being indicative of a recent interaction/merger event. Mid-infrared spectra of eight SMPs, obtained with ISOPHOT-S in the ~2-11 micron band are presented. Four of the observed sources are H II region-like (H2) galaxies, three are Seyfert 2 and one is unclassified. Emission attributed to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) at 6.2, 7.7 and …
We discuss BeppoSAX observations and archive ASCA data of NGC 7679, a nearby, nearly face-on SB0 galaxy in which starburst and AGN activities coexist. The X-ray observations reveal a bright (L_{0.1-50 keV} \sim 2.9 \times 10^{43} erg s^{-1}) and variable source having a minimum observed doubling/halving time scale of \sim 10 - 20 ksec. A simple power law with photon index of Γ\sim 1.75 and small absorption (N_H < 4\times 10^{20} cm^{-2}) can reproduce the NGC 7679 spectrum from 0.1 up to 50 keV. These X-ray properties are unambiguous signs of Seyfert 1 activity in the nucleus of NGC 7679. The …
We present infrared L-band (3-4 micron) nuclear spectra of a large sample of nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs).ULIRGs classified optically as non-Seyferts (LINERs, HII-regions, and unclassified) are our main targets. Using the 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission and absorption features at 3.1 micron due to ice-covered dust and at 3.4 micron produced by bare carbonaceous dust, we search for signatures of powerful active galactic nuclei (AGNs) deeply buried along virtually all lines-of-sight. The 3.3 micron PAH emission, the signatures of starbursts, is detect…
We have compared the morphological characteristics of the 891 galaxies in the Extended 12-micron Sample (E12GS), and assessed the effect of the 12-micron selection criterion on galaxy properties. The normal spirals in the E12GS have the same axial ratios, morphological types, and bar and ring fractions as other normal spirals. The HII/starburst galaxies have a higher incidence of bars, and more than twice the normal rate of "peculiar" morphologies, both of which are attributable to relatively recent disturbances. The galaxies with active nuclei (AGNs: Seyferts and LINERs) have the same inciden…
This letter presents incontrovertible evidence that NGC5506 is a Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1). Our new 0.9-1.4 micron spectrum of its nucleus clearly shows the permitted OI 1.1287 micron line (with full width at half maximum <2000 km/s) and the `1 micron FeII lines'. These lines can only originate in the optically-thick broad line region (BLR) and, among Seyfert nuclei the latter series of lines are seen only in NLSy1s. The obscuration to the BLR, derived from a rough estimate of the OI 1.1287 micron / OI 8446 Angstrom ratio and from the reddening of the near-IR Paschen lines, is A_v > 5. Tog…
We report the results of 20, 6, and 2 cm VLA and 1.5 cm OVRO observations of the optically-selected CfA Seyfert galaxies and the bolometric-flux-limited 12-Micron active galaxy sample. Every object observed was detected at 6 cm. Only 6-8% of the 12um sample Seyferts (3-4 objects) are radio-loud (and none of the CfA sample), as compared to 15-20% for the BQS quasars. These radio-loud objects are compact and have flat spectra, distinguishing them from the more common radio-quiet objects. The 6-20 cm slopes of the Seyfert 1s and 2s are similar, with average values of about -0.7. Although several …
We present new spectroscopic observations of the 3.4 micron absorption feature in the Seyfert galaxies, NGC1068 and NGC7674, and the ultraluminous infrared galaxy, IRAS08572+3915. A signature of C-H bonds in aliphatic hydrocarbons, the 3.4 micron feature indicates the presence of organic material in Galactic and extragalactic dust. Here we compare the 3.4 micron feature in all the galaxies in which it has been detected. In several cases, the signal-to-noise ratio and spectral resolution permit a detailed examination of the feature profile, something which has rarely been attempted in extragala…
Mid-infrared images of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279 obtained with the ISO satellite are presented together with the results of a one-year monitoring campaign of the 2.5-11.7 micron spectrum. Contemporaneous optical photometric and spectrophotometric observations are also presented. The galaxy appears as a point-like source at the resolution of the ISOCAM instrument, 4-5". The 2.5-11.7 micron average spectrum of the nucleus in Mrk 279 shows a strong power law continuum with a spectral index alpha = -0.80+/-0.05 and weak PAH emission features. The Mrk 279 spectral energy distribution shows a mid…
We have discovered an axially symmetric, well-defined shell of material in the constellation of Cepheus, based on imaging acquired as part of the Galactic First Look Survey with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The 86'' x 75'' object exhibits brightened limbs on the minor axis, and is clearly visible at 24 microns, but is not detected in the 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0, 70, or 160 micron images. Followup with 7.5 - 40 micron spectroscopy reveals the shell to be composed entirely of ionized gas, and that the 24 micron imaging traces solely [O IV] 25.89 micron emission. The spectrum also exhibits weaker [Ne …
This paper is the second in a series, studying the optical properties of a sample of mid-IR Warm Seyfert galaxies and a control sample of mid-IR Cold galaxies. The present paper is devoted to aperture photometry. We discuss nuclear (within the central 2 kpc) and disk optical properties and their correlations with IR properties. We find a transition in the observed optical and IR properties from the Cold to the Warm Seyfert 2 and Seyfert 1 samples, with a partial overlap between the first two. This is in the sense of: (i) increasing nuclear optical luminosities and bluer nuclear colours (ii) de…
We have studied the relationship between the [O IV] lambda 25.89 micron emission line luminosities, obtained from Spitzer spectra, the X-ray continua in the 2-10 keV band, primarily from ASCA, and the 14-195 keV band obtained with the SWIFT/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), for a sample of nearby (z < 0.08) Seyfert galaxies. For comparison, we have examined the relationship between the [O III] 5007, the 2-10 keV and the 14-195 keV luminosities for the same set of objects. We find that both the [O IV] and [O III] luminosities are well-correlated with the BAT luminosities. On the other hand, the [O I…
We use the CO band at 2.3 micron to constrain the populations of young stars in the central regions of Seyfert galaxies. We report new CO band spectroscopy of 46 Seyfert galaxies. In most cases, the observed CO indices appear diluted by the presence of a non-stellar component (most likely, warm dust surrounding the active nucleus). We used JHKL aperture photometry to estimate the non-stellar contribution at 2.3 micron. We successfully corrected the CO band for the dilution for 16 galaxies which were not dominated by the non-stellar component. Comparing with CO indices measured in elliptical an…
JHKL'M (1-5 micron) imaging of a sample of Seyfert (Sy) 2 galaxies is presented. We confirm that the 1-2.2 micron nuclear continuum of some Sy 2s is dominated by stellar emission, whereas the continuum emission at longer wavelengths (3-5 micron) is almost entirely non-stellar in origin. The IR non-stellar spectral energy distributions (SED) (up to 15 micron) of Sy galaxies show a variety of shapes, and they are well reproduced with the tapered disk models of Efstathiou & Rowan-Robinson (1995). We have used two models, one including an optically thin cone component and a coneless model. Althoug…
We obtained 0.8-2.4 micron spectra at a resolution of 320 km/s of four narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies in order to study the near-infrared properties of these objects. We focus on the analysis of the FeII emission in that region and the kinematics of the low-ionization broad lines. We found that the 1 micron FeII lines (9997 A, 10501 A, 10863 A and 11126 A) are the strongest FeII lines in the observed interval. For the first time, primary cascade lines of FeII arising from the decay of upper levels pumped by Ly-alpha fluorescence are resolved and identified in active galactic nuclei. Excitation…
Isolated HAEBE stars are believed to represent an intermediate stage of objects between young stellar objects surrounded by massive, optically thick, gaseous and dusty disks and Vega like stars surrounded by debris disks. The star AB Aur is already known for being surrounded by an intermediate-stage dust disk emitting a fairly large infrared and (sub-)millimetric excess. Until now, the outer disk structure has only been resolved at millimeter wavelengths and at optical wavelength coronographic imaging. We have obtained 20 microns images which show an unexpected ellipse-shaped disk structure in…
We present the results of L-band spectroscopical observations of local bright ULIRGs, performed with ISAAC at the VLT. We discuss the L-band spectral features of seven single sources, and the statistical properties of a complete sample of 15 sources obtained combining our observations with other published 3-4 micron spectra. Our main results are: 1. When a spectral indicator suggesting the presence of an AGN (low equivalent width of the 3.3 micron emission line, steep lambda-f_lambda spectrum, presence of an absorption feature at 3.4 micron) is found, the AGN is always confirmed by independent…
Images at 12.5 microns of nuclei of three nearby Seyfert galaxies -- NGC 1275, NGC 4151 and NGC 7469 -- have been obtained with the Keck 10-m Telescope. NGC 7469 is resolved and deconvolution delineates a structure <0.04"x0.08" or <13x26 pc at a position angle of 135deg. From a comparison with structure seen at millimeter wavelengths, this structure is interpreted as a disk aligned with the molecular gas in the central few hundred parsecs of the galaxy. NGC 1275 and NGC 4151 are not resolved; limits on the sizes of these nuclei are 0.08" and 0.16", corresponding to physical spatial scales of 2…
We present the results of infrared 2.8-4.1 micron (L-band) spectroscopy of nearby infrared luminous galaxies with possible signatures of dust-obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in data at other wavelengths. The samples are chosen to include sources with a radio excess relative to far-infrared emission, strong absorption features in mid-infrared 5-11.5 micron spectra, unusually weak [CII] 158 micron emission relative to the far-infrared continuum, and radio galaxies classified optically as narrow-line objects. Our aim is to investigate whether the signatures of possible obscured AGNs can be…
Aims: We present a near-infrared spectral atlas of 47 active galactic nuclei (AGN), of all degrees of activity, in the wavelength interval of 0.8-2.4 microns, including the fluxes of the observed emission lines. We analyze the spectroscopic properties of the continuum and emission line spectra of the sources Methods: In order to exclude aperture and seeing effects we use near-infrared spectroscopy in the short cross-dispersed mode (SXD, 0.8-2.4 microns), taking the JHK-bands spectra simultaneously. Results: We present the most extensive NIR spectral atlas of AGN to date. This atlas offers a su…
We have selected an all--sky sample of 893 galaxies from the IRAS FSC--2, defined by a total (ADDSCAN) 12um flux limit of 0.22~Jy. Completeness is verified to 0.30~Jy, below which we have quantified the incompleteness down to 0.22~Jy for our statistical analysis. ¶The Seyfert subsample is the largest unbiased sample of (118) Seyfert galaxies ever assembled and is complete not only to 0.30~Jy at 12um, but also with respect to a bolometric flux limit of $\sim2.0\times10^{-10}$~(cgs). The average $V/V_{max}$ for the full sample, corrected for incompleteness at low fluxes, is $0.51\pm0.04$, while …
We present the results of our optical spectrophotometric campaign ongoing at the Astronomical Observatory of Bologna in Loiano (Italy) on hard X-ray sources detected by INTEGRAL. We observed spectroscopically the putative optical counterparts of four more INTEGRAL sources, IGR J12391-1610, IGR J18406-0539, 2E 1853.7+1534 and IGR J19473+4452. These data have allowed us to determine their nature, finding that IGR J12391-1610 (=LEDA 170194) and IGR J19473+4452 are Seyfert 2 galaxies at redshifts z = 0.036 and z = 0.053, respectively, IGR J18406-0539 (=SS 406) is a Be massive X-ray binary located …
Recently, a relationship between the water maser detection rate and far infrared (FIR) flux density has been found as a result of a 22 GHz maser survey in a sample comprised of northern galaxies with 100 micron flux density > 50 Jy and a declination >-30 degrees. The survey has been extended toward galaxies with lower FIR flux densities in order to confirm this correlation and to discover additional maser sources for relevant follow-up interferometric studies. A sample of 41 galaxies with 30 Jy < S(100 micron) < 50 Jy and Dec. > -30 degrees was observed with the 100-m telescope at Effelsberg i…
The complete mid- to far- infrared continuum energy distribution collected with the Infrared Space Observatory of the Seyfert 2 prototype NGC 5252 is presented. ISOCAM images taken in the 3--15 micron range show a resolved central source that is consistent at all bands with a region of about 1.3 kpc in size. Due to the lack of on going star formation in the disk of the galaxy, this resolved emission is associated with either dust heated in the nuclear active region or with bremsstrahlung emission from the nuclear and extended ionised gas. The size of the mid-IR emission contrasts with the stan…
We investigated the correlation between nuclear/circumnuclear starbursts around the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and the AGN activities for 43 Seyfert galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. We found that circumnuclear starburst luminosity as well as nuclear starburst luminosity are positively correlated with AGN luminosity. Moreover, nuclear starburst luminosity is more strongly correlated with the AGN luminosity normalized with AGN Eddington luminosity than is circumnuclear starburst luminosity. This implies that starbursts nearer the AGN could have a greater effect on AGN mass accretion…
We use a recent near-infrared imaging survey of samples of Seyfert and normal galaxies to study the role of bars in the fueling of nuclear activity. The active galaxy sample includes Seyfert galaxies in the Revised Shapely-Ames (RSA) and Sandage & Tammann's (1987) extension to this catalog. The normal galaxies were selected to match the Seyfert sample in Hubble type, redshift, inclination and blue luminosity. All the galaxies in both samples classified as barred in the RSA catalog are also barred in the near-infrared. In addition, ~55% of the galaxies classified as non-barred in the RSA show e…
We present mid-infrared data of a sample of 57 AGNs obtained with the instrument ISOCAM on board the satellite ISO. The images were obtained through the LW2 (6.75 microns) and LW7 (9.62 microns) filters. This is a new analysis of Clavel et al. (2000) galaxy sample, which is divided into 26 type 1 (< or = 1.5) and 28 type 2 (> 1.5) Seyfert galaxies, plus three QSOs. The spatial resolution of the images allow us to separate the nuclear and the extended contributions to the total emission after decomposing the brightness profiles into different morphological components. The most common components…
Based on the analysis of a large spectropolarimetric survey of Seyfert 2 galaxies (S2s) from the CfA and 12-micron samples conducted mostly at Lick and Palomar Observatories, it is shown that S2s with hidden BLR (HBLRs) are intrinsically more powerful than non-HBLR S2s. The positive detection of BLR in HBLR S2s appears to be due largely to the intrinsic strength of the hidden AGN nucleus rather than the lower level of nuclear obscuration or reduced dominance of circumnuclear starburst. The HBLR S2s, on average, share many similar large-scale characteristics with Seyfert 1 galaxies (S1s), as wo…
The results of an optical spectroscopy campaign performed at the Astronomical Observatory of Bologna in Loiano (Italy) on three hard X-ray sources detected by INTEGRAL (IGR J17303-0601, IGR J18027-1455 and IGR J21247+5058) are presented. These data have allowed a determination of the nature for two of them, with IGR J17303-0601 being a low mass X-ray binary in the Galaxy and IGR J18027-1455 a background Type 1 Seyfert galaxy at redshift z = 0.035. IGR J21247+5058, instead, has a quite puzzling spectroscopic appearance, with a broad, redshifted H_alpha complex superimposed onto a `normal' F/G-t…
Multi-frequency observations of Mrk 348 are presented consisting of 2 epochs of MERLIN data at 5 GHz, ISOPHOT data at 170, 90, 60 and 25 micron, NOT images at U, B, R and I bands and data at 1350 micron from the archive for SCUBA. The new optical images reveal a disrupted arm that ends towards the eastern companion of Mrk 348, consistent with the hypothesis that Mrk 348 and its companion form an interacting system. 5 GHz MERLIN imaging shows that only one of the radio components of Mrk 348 is polarized (%P=5). The broadband spectrum of Mrk 348 is flat between the radio and millimetre bands, su…
We present mid-IR spectro-interferometry of the Seyfert type 1 nucleus of NGC 3783. The dusty circumnuclear environment is spatially resolved and the wavelength dependence of the compact emission is discussed. The observations were carried out with the MIDI instrument at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer in the N-band. Spectra and visibilities were derived with a spectral resolution of 30 in the wavelength range from 8 to 13 micron. For the interpretation we developed a simple dusty disk model with small and variable covering factor. At baselines of 65 and 69 m, visibilities in the range…
A sample of 196 AGNs and ULIRGs observed by the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on Spitzer is analyzed to study the distribution of the strength of the 9.7 micron silicate feature. Average spectra are derived for quasars, Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 AGNs, and ULIRGs. We find that quasars are characterized by silicate features in emission and Seyfert 1s equally by emission or weak absorption. Seyfert 2s are dominated by weak silicate absorption, and ULIRGs are characterized by strong silicate absorption (mean apparent optical depth about 1.5). Luminosity distributions show that luminosities at rest fra…
We present two Rossi Xray Timing Explorer (RXTE) PCA observations of the type~2 Seyfert galaxy NGC 4388 caught in an unusual low X-ray absorption state. The observations were triggered by a detection in the 1.5-3 keV band of the RXTE All-Sky Monitor. NGC 4388 was found at a somewhat high continuum level (f(2-10 keV)=8x10(-11)erg cm(-2) s(-1)) and with a column density (N_H~3x10(22)cm(-2)), a factor ~10 lower than normal. The second PCA observation, four hours later, gave N_H<2x10(21)cm(-2) indicating, at the 3.1 sigma level, variability so rapid puts the absorber on a few 100 Schwartzschild ra…
We report on the results of systematic infrared 2.5-5 micron spectroscopy of 45 nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z < 0.3 using IRC onboard the AKARI satellite. This paper investigates whether the luminosities of these ULIRGs are dominated by starburst activity, or optically elusive buried AGNs are energetically important. Our criteria include the strengths of the 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features and the optical depths of absorption features at 3.1 micron due to ice-covered dust grains and at 3.4 micron from bare carbonaceous dust grains. Beca…
Using 8 telescopes in the northern and southern hemispheres, plus archival data from two on-line sky surveys, we performed a systematic optical spectroscopic study of 39 putative counterparts of unidentified or poorly studied INTEGRAL sources in order to determine or at least better assess their nature. This was implemented within the framework of our campaign to reveal the nature of newly-discovered and/or unidentified sources detected by INTEGRAL. Our results show that 29 of these objects are active galactic nuclei (13 of which are of Seyfert 1 type, 15 are Seyfert 2 galaxies and one is poss…
We examine the 10\m\ emission of the central regions of 281 spiral galaxies, after having compiled all ground-based, small-aperture ($\sim$5") broad-band photometric observations at ł$\sim$10\m\ (N magnitudes) published in the literature. We evaluate the compactness of the $\sim$10\m\ emission of galaxy nuclei by comparing these small-beam measures with the large-beam IRAS 12\m\ fluxes. In the analysis of different subsets of objects, we apply survival analysis techniques in order to exploit the information contained in ``censored'' data (i.e., upper limits on the fluxes). Seyferts are found t…
We present near-infrared 1.5 - 2.5 micron moderate resolution long-slit spectra of two Seyfert 1 galaxies (NGC 1097 and NGC 1566), three Seyfert 2s (NGC 1386, NGC 4945 and NGC 5128) and one Seyfert 1.5 (NGC 3227), both parallel to ionization cone or jet and perpendicular to it. The spectra are used to study the spatial extent of the line emission, integrated masses of excited H2 and the excitation mechanisms of interstellar gas. Broad BrGgamma originating from the BLR is detected in three galaxies (NGC 1386, NGC 1566 and NGC 3227), of which NGC 1386 is optically classified as Seyfert 2. In the…
We present sub-arcsec near-infrared 1.5 - 2.5 micron moderate resolution long-slit spectra of eight nearby Seyfert galaxies (z<0.01), both parallel to the ionization cone and perpendicular to it. These spectra complement similar data on six Seyferts, presented in Reunanen, Kotilainen & Prieto (2002). Large concentrations of molecular gas (H2) are present in the nucleus regardless of the Seyfert type. The spatial extent of the H2 emission is larger perpendicular to the cone than parallel to it in 6/8 (75 %) galaxies, in agreement with the unified models of Active Galactic Nuclei. Broad BrGamma …
Before having exhausted the helium in its tank on April 8, 1998, the Infrared Space Observatory had time to perform several complementary surveys at various depths and areas within selected regions of the sky. We present the results of some of the surveys done with the mid-infrared camera, ISOCAM, on-board ISO, and more specifically those surveys which were performed using the broad-band filter LW3 (12-18 microns). We show that mid-infrared allows to discriminate starburst and post-starburst galaxies among galaxies which present similar optical-UV morphological and colour signatures. Furthermo…
We present the results of IRS low-resolution spectroscopy of 51 Seyfert galaxies, part of a large Spitzer observing program to determine the mid-to-far infrared spectral energy distributions of a well-defined sample of 87 nearby, 12 micron-selected Seyferts. We find that the spectra clearly divide into groups based on their continuum shapes and spectral features. The infrared spectral types appear to be related to the Seyfert types. Some features are clearly related to a starburst contribution to the IR spectrum, while the observed power-law continuum shapes, attributed to the AGN, may be dust…
ISOCAM extragalactic mid-infrared deep surveys have detected a population of strong IR emitters ten times more numerous than expected if there were no evolution from z<0.2 (IRAS) up to the maximum redshift of these galaxies (z=1.5). The mid-IR cosmic background produced by these galaxies (2.35+/-0.8 nW m^-2 sr^-1, at 15 microns above 50 microJy) is larger than 30 per cent of the energy radiated in the I band by the optical galaxies detected in the HDF, which are two orders of magnitude more numerous. This fraction is much higher than in the local universe (z<0.2) as probed by IRAS, where all i…
We present the results of Spitzer IRS low-resolution infrared 5-35 micron spectroscopy of nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z < 0.15. We focus on the search for the signatures of buried active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the complete sample of ULIRGs classified optically as non-Seyferts (LINERs or HII-regions). In addition to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features at 6.2 micron, 7.7 micron, and 11.3 micron, the conventional tool of starburst-AGN separation, we use the optical depths of the 9.7 micron and 18 micron silicate dust absorption features to infer the g…
We present further results from our ongoing optical spectrophotometric campaign at the Astronomical Observatory of Bologna in Loiano (Italy) on unidentified hard X-ray sources detected by INTEGRAL. We observed spectroscopically the putative optical counterparts of the INTEGRAL sources IGR J00234+6141, IGR J01583+6713, IGR J06074+2205, IGR J13091+1137 and IGR J20286+2544. We find that the first two are Galactic objects, namely a Cataclysmic Variable at a distance of about 300 pc and a Be/X transient High-Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) located at about 6.4 kpc, respectively, whereas the last one is id…
We use a large, heterogeneous sample of local active galactic nuclei (AGN) that includes Seyfert 1s, Seyfert 2s and PG quasars to investigate for the first time the relation between black hole mass (M_BH) and mid-infrared nuclear emission. We find a clear relation between M_BH and the 10 micron nuclear luminosity for these local AGNs. There are no significant differences between type 1 and type 2 objects, implying that the reprocessing of the 10 micron nuclear emission is not severely affected by geometric and optical depth effects. We also confirm that M_BH is related to the 2-10keV X-ray lum…
We report X-ray observations of the field containing the ultraluminous IRAS galaxy Mrk~273 Using the ACIS-S3 instrument on board Chandra. The high resolution X-ray image, for the first time, reveals a compact hard X-ray nucleus in Mrk~273. Its X-ray energy distribution is well described by a heavily obscured power-law spectrum plus a narrow $\Feka$ emission line at 6.4 keV. The neutral hydrogen column density is about $4\times10^{23}\cm^{-2}$, implying an absorption -corrected X-ray luminosity (0.1--10 keV) for the nucleus of $\Lx\approx 6.5\times 10^{43} \ergs$. There are also bright soft X-r…
New observations are reported of J-band spectra (1.04micron -- 1.4 micron) of three Seyfert 2 galaxies, Mkn 34, Mkn 78 and NGC 5929. In each case the spectral range includes the near-infrared lines of [FeII], [PII], HeI and Pa beta. Each Seyfert galaxy has a known radio jet, and we investigate the infrared line ratios of the nuclear and extended regions of each galaxy compared to the radio structure. In Mkn 34 there is a clear indication of an extranuclear region, probably coincident with a shock induced by the radio jet, in which [FeII] is considerably enhanced, although the nuclear emission …
We present the results of ROSAT All-Sky Survey observations of Seyfert and IR-luminous galaxies from the Extended 12 Micron Galaxy Sample and the optically-selected CfA Sample. Roughly half of the Seyferts (mostly Seyfert 1s) have been fitted to an absorbed power-law model, yielding an average gamma of 2.26+-0.11 for 43 Seyfert 1s and 2.45+-0.18 for 10 Seyfert 2s, with both types having a median value of 2.3. The soft X-ray (SXR) luminosity correlates with the 12um luminosity, with Seyfert 1s having relatively more SXR emission than Seyfert 2s of similar mid-infrared luminosities, by a factor …
We present near-IR integral field spectroscopy of a sample of 31 Seyfert and LINER galaxies which were selected both to span a wide range of nuclear magnitudes and to possess roughly equal numbers of Seyfert type 1 and 2 nuclei. Moderate resolution (R~1000; R~2000 for 3 cases) integral field K-band spectra were obtained for all 31 galaxies in our sample and for 18 galaxies (R~1000; R~2000 for 4 cases) H-band integral field spectra were also obtained. In each case, we present nuclear, larger aperture, and difference spectra with corresponding information about emission line wavelengths, fluxes,…
