We present mid-IR spectro-interferometry of the Seyfert type 1 nucleus of NGC 3783. The dusty circumnuclear environment is spatially resolved and the wavelength dependence of the compact emission is discussed. The observations were carried out with the MIDI instrument at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer in the N-band. Spectra and visibilities were derived with a spectral resolution of 30 in the wavelength range from 8 to 13 micron. For the interpretation we developed a simple dusty disk model with small and variable covering factor. At baselines of 65 and 69 m, visibilities in the range of 0.4 to 0.7 were measured. The N-band spectra show a monotonic increase of the measured flux with wavelength with no apparent silicate feature around 10 micron. We find that the mid-IR emission from the nucleus can be reproduced by an extended dust disk or torus with a small covering factor of the radiating dust clouds. Our mid-IR observations of NGC 3783 are consistent with a clumpy circumnuclear dust environment. The interpretation in terms of a dusty torus with low covering factor supports a clumpy version of the unified scheme for AGN. The inferred sizes and luminosities are in good agreement with dust reverberation sizes and bolometric luminosities from optical and X-ray observations.
We investigated with MIDI the extension of dusty mid-infrared excess sources (IRS 1W, IRS 10W, IRS 2, IRS 8) in immediate vicinity to the black hole (BH) at the GC. We derive 3$σ$ upper limits of the correlated fluxes of our target sources which give direct constraints on the size of the emitting regions. Most probably the emission originates from bow shocks generated by windy stars ploughing through the dense matter of the Northern MiniSpiral.
We present interferometric observations of the Be star 51 Ophiuchi. These observations were obtained during the science demonstration phase of the MIDI instrument at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Using MIDI, a Michelson 2 beam combiner that operates at the N band (8 to 13 microns), we obtained for the first time observations of 51 Oph in the mid-infrared at high-angular resolution. It is currently known that this object presents a circumstellar dust and gas disk that shows a very different composition from other Herbig Ae disks. The nature of the 51 Oph system is still a myst…
We used MIDI, the mid-infrared interferometric instrument of the VLTI, to observe the massive protostellar candidate IRS 9A, located at a distance of about 7 kpc at the periphery of the NGC 3603 star cluster. Our ongoing analysis shows that MIDI almost fully resolves the object on all observed baselines, yet below 9 $μ$m we detect a steep rise of the visibility. This feature is modelled as a combination of a compact hot component and a resolved warm envelope which lowers the correlated flux at longer wavelengths. The extended envelope can already be seen in both MIDI's acquisition images and i…
The young eruptive star V1647 Ori was observed with MIDI, the mid-infrared interferometric instrument at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), on March 2, 2005. We present the first spectrally resolved interferometric visibility points for this object. Our results show that (1) the mid-infrared emitting region is extended, having a size of ~ 7 AU at 10 um; (2) no signatures of a close companion can be seen; (3) the 8-13 um spectrum exhibits no obvious spectral features. Comparison with similar observations of Herbig Ae stars suggests that V1647 Ori probably possesses a disk of modera…
We present the first high spatial and spectral observations of the circumstellar envelope (CSE) of a B[e] supergiant (CPD$-57 2874$), performed with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Spectra, visibilities, and closure phase, were obtained using the beam-combiner instruments AMBER (near-IR interferometry with three 8.3 m Unit Telescopes or UTs) and MIDI (mid-IR interferometry with two UTs). The interferometric observations of the CSE are well fitted by an elliptical Gaussian model with FWHM diameters varying linearly with wavelength. Typical diameters measured are $\simeq1.8\times…
VLT-Interferometry will allow imaging of the Galactic Center (GC) and the nuclei of extragalactic sources at an angular resolution of a few milliarcseconds. VLTI will be a prime instrument to study the immediate environment of the massive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. With the MID infrared Interferometric instrument (MIDI) for example the enigmatic compact dust embedded MIR-excess sources within the central parsec should be resolvable. Further the observations of external galactic nuclei will allow unprecedented measurements of physical parameters (i.e. structure and luminosity) i…
We studied the geometry of the inner (AU-scale) circumstellar environment around the Herbig Be star MWC 147. Combining, for the first time, near- (NIR, K band) and mid-infrared (MIR, N band) spectro-interferometry on a Herbig star, our VLTI/MIDI and AMBER data constrain not only the geometry of the brightness distribution, but also the radial temperature distribution in the disk. For our detailed modeling of the interferometric data and the spectral energy distribution, we employ 2-D radiation transfer simulations, showing that passive irradiated Keplerian dust disks can easily fit the SED, bu…
We report on resolved interferometric observations with VLTI/MIDI of the massive young stellar object (MYSO) W33A. The MIDI observations deliver spectrally dispersed visibilities with values between 0.03 and 0.06, for a baseline of 45m over the wavelength range 8-13 micron. The visibilities indicate that W33A has a FWHM size of approximately 120AU (0.030'') at 8 micron which increases to 240AU at 13 micron, scales previously unexplored among MYSOs. This observed trend is consistent with the temperature falling off with distance. 1D dust radiative transfer models are simultaneously fit to the v…
We present the first spectro-interferometric observations of the circumstellar envelope (CSE) of a B[e] supergiant (CPD -57 2874), performed with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) using the beam-combiner instruments AMBER (near-IR interferometry with three 8.3 m Unit Telescopes or UTs) and MIDI (mid-IR interferometry with two UTs). Our observations of the CSE are well fitted by an elliptical Gaussian model with FWHM diameters varying linearly with wavelength. Typical diameters measured are $\simeq1.8\times3.4$ mas or $\simeq4.5\times8.5$ AU (adopting a distance of 2.5 kpc) at $2.2…
We have used near- and mid-infrared interferometry to investigate the pulsating atmosphere and the circumstellar environment of the Mira variable RR Aql. Observations were taken with the VLTI/AMBER (near infrared) and the VLTI/MIDI (mid infrared) instruments. We have obtained a total of 15 MIDI epochs between Apr 9, 2004 and Jul 28, 2007 covering 4 pulsation cycles and one AMBER epoch on Sep 9, 2006 at phase 2.82. This work is also part of an ongoing project of joint VLTI and VLBA observations to study the connection between stellar pulsation and the mass loss process. Here we present a compar…
We present the first VLTI/MIDI observations of the Be star Alpha Ara, showing a nearly unresolved circumstellar disk in the N band. The interferometric measurements made use of the UT1 and UT3 telescopes. The projected baselines were 102 and 74 meters with position angles of 7 degres and 55 degres, respectively. These measurements put an upper limit to the envelope size in the N band under the Uniform disk approximation of $ϕ_{\rm max}= 4\pm1.5$ mas, corresponding to 14 $R_{\star}$, assuming $R_{\star}$=4.8${\rm R}_\odot$ and the Hipparcos distance of 74pc. On the other hand the disk density m…
We have used mid-infrared long-baseline interferometry with MIDI at the VLTI to resolve the circumstellar material around the Herbig Ae star HR 5999, providing the first direct measurement of its angular size, and to derive constraints on the spatial distribution of the dust. A set of ten spectrally dispersed (8-13 micron) interferometric measurements of HR 5999 was obtained. The characteristic size of the emission region depends on the projected baseline length and position angle, and it ranges between ~ 5-15 milliarcseconds (Gauss FWHM), corresponding to remarkably small physical sizes of ~ …
Context: As is the case of several other Be stars, Achernar is surrounded by an envelope, recently detected by near-IR interferometry. Aims: We search for the signature of circumstellar emission at distances of a few stellar radii from Achernar, in the thermal IR domain. Methods: We obtained interferometric observations on three VLTI baselines in the N band (8-13 mic), using the MIDI instrument. Results: From the measured visibilities, we derive the angular extension and flux contribution of the N band circumstellar emission in the polar direction of Achernar. The interferometrically resolved …
We present the results of N-band spectro-interferometric observations of the silicate carbon star IRAS08002-3803 with the MID-infrared Interferometric instrument (MIDI) at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The observations were carried out using two unit telescopes (UT2 and UT3) with projected baseline lengths ranging from 39 to 47 m. Our observations of IRAS08002-3803 have spatially resolved the dusty environment of a silicate carbon star for the first time and revealed an unexpected wavelength dependence of the angular size in the N ba…
We report on observations of circumstellar disks around young stars that have been obtained with the MIDI instrument, which is mounted on the VLT Interferometer and operates in the 10 micrometer atmospheric window. The maximum spatial resolution of 5 milli-arcsec corresponds to sub-AU scales at the distance to nearby star formation regions. Thus, we can study the disks on the spatial scales at which important processes occur, such as accretion, dust processing, and planet formation. The main results obtained so far can be summarized as follows: 1. The measured interferometric visibilities are …
We present the first multi-epoch N-band spectro-interferometric observations of the carbon-rich Mira variable V Oph using MIDI at the ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer. Our MIDI observations were carried out at three different phases 0.18, 0.49, and 0.65, using three different baselines configurations (UT2-UT4, UT1-UT4, and UT2-UT3) with projected baseline lengths of 42-124 m. The wavelength dependence of the uniform-disk diameters obtained at all epochs is characterized by a roughly constant region between 8 and 10 micron with a slight dip centered at ~9.5 micron and a gradual increas…
We report spatially resolved, spectrally dispersed N-band observations of the B[e] star Hen 3-1191 with the MIDI instrument of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer. The object is resolved with a 40 m baseline and has an equivalent uniform disc diameter ranging from 24 mas at 8 microns to 36 mas at 13 microns. The MIDI spectrum and visibilities show a curvature which can arise from a weak silicate feature in which the object appears ~ 15% larger than in the continuum, but this could result from a change in the object's geometry within the band. We then model Hen's 3-1191 spectral energy dist…
We present the first mid-infrared interferometric measurements of FU Orionis. We clearly resolve structures that are best explained with an optically thick accretion disk. A simple accretion disk model fits the observed SED and visibilities reasonably well and does not require the presence of any additional structure such as a dusty envelope. The inclination and also the position angle of the disk can be constrained from the multibaseline interferometric observations. Our disk model is in general agreement with most published near-infrared interferometric measurements. From the shape and stren…
The dust enshrouded star IRS~3 in the central light year of our galaxy was partially resolved in a recent VLTI experiment. The presented observation is the first step in investigating both IRS~3 in particular and the stellar population of the Galactic Centre in general with the VLTI at highest angular resolution. We will outline which scientific issues can be addressed by a complete MIDI dataset on IRS~3 in the mid infrared.
Current detection methods of planetary companions do not allow retrieving their spectral information properties. The method of Differential Interferometry has the potential to complement such information by comparing interferometric observables in various spectral channels. We outline the basic aspects of this method and how it can soon be realised by the Mid-infrared Interferometric instrument (MIDI) at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) observatory. A set of possible candidates for such direct observation has been selected among currently identified planetary companions. Differen…
Interferometry in the optical and near infrared has so far played a marginal role in Extragalactic Astronomy. Active Galactic Nuclei are the brightest and most compact extragalactic sources, nonetheless only a very limited number could be studied with speckle interferometry and none with long baseline interferometry. The VLTI will allow the study of moderately faint extragalactic objects with very high spatial resolution thus opening a new window on the universe. With this paper we focus on three scientific cases to show how AMBER and MIDI can be used to tackle open issues in extragalactic ast…
We present a new analysis of the very first mid-infrared N-band long-baseline interferometric observations of an extragalactic source: the nucleus of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, obtained with MIDI (Mid-InfrareD Interferometer), the mid-infrared beamcombiner at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The resolution of 10 mas allows to study the compact central core of the galaxy between 8 and 13 microns. Both visibility measurements and MIDI spectrum are well reproduced with a simple radiative transfer model with two concentric spherical components…
We present 12.8 microns images of the core of NGC 1068 obtained with the BURST mode of the VLT/VISIR. We trace structures under the diffraction limit of one UT and we investigate the link between dust in the vicinity of the central engine of NGC 1068, recently resolved by interferometry with MIDI, and more extended structures. This step is mandatory for a multi-scale understanding of the sources of mid-infrared emission in AGNs. A speckle processing of VISIR BURST mode images was performed to extract very low spatial-frequency visibilities, first considering the full field of VISIR BURST mode …
Massive stars deeply influence their surroundings by their luminosity and the injection of kinetic energy. So far, they have mostly been studied with spatially unresolved observations, although evidence of geometrical complexity of their wind are numerous. Interferometry can provide spatially resolved observations of massive stars and their immediate vicinity. Specific geometries (disks, jets, latitude-dependent winds) can be probed by this technique. The first observation of a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star (γ^2 Vel) with the AMBER/VLTI instrument yielded to a re-evaluation of its distance and an impro…
We present high spatial resolution observations of the mid-infrared core of the dusty symbiotic system HM Sge. The MIDI interferometer was used with the VLT UTs and ATs providing baselines oriented from PA=42° to 105°. The MIDI visibilities are compared with the ones predicted in the frame of various spherical dust shells published in the literature involving single or double dusty shells. The mid-IR environment is unresolved by a 8m telescope and the MIDI spectrum exhibits a level similar to the ISO spectra recorded 10 yr ago. The estimated Gaussian HWHM of the shell of 12AU in the 8-…
The core of the nebula surrounding Eta Carinae has been observed with the VLT Adaptive Optics system NACO and with the interferometer VLTI/MIDI to constrain spatially and spectrally the warm dusty environment and the central object. In particular, narrow-band images at 3.74 and 4.05 micron reveal the butterfly shaped dusty environment close to the central star with unprecedented spatial resolution. A void whose radius corresponds to the expected sublimation radius has been discovered around the central source. Fringes have been obtained in the Mid-IR which reveal a correlated flux of about 100…
We present observations of the dusty emission from the young planetary nebulae Hen2-113 and CPD-56 obtained with VLT/NACO, VLTI/MIDI. The central stars of these two objects are Wolf-Rayet stars of the same spectral type [WC10]. They share an impressive number of characteristics and are located at similar distance, making the detection of any differences in their close environment of great interest. Hen2-113 exhibits a clear ring-like structure of about 0.4 arcsec in diameter, superimposed to a more diffuse environment visible in L', M' and 8.7 micron bands. No clear core could be detected for …
We present N-band spectro-interferometric observations of the red supergiant WOH G64 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using MIDI at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The location of WOH G64 on the H-R diagram based on the previously estimated luminosities is in serious disagreement with the current stellar evolution theory. The dust envelope around WOH G64 has been spatially resolved with a baseline of ~60 m--the first MIDI observations to resolve an individual stellar source in an extragalactic system. The observed N-band visibilities show a slight decrease from 8 to 10 micro…
The core of the nebula surrounding Eta Carinae has recently been observed with VLT/NACO, VLTI/VINCI, VLTI/MIDI and VLTI/AMBER in order to spatially and spectrally constrain the warm dusty environment and the central object. Narrow-band images at 3.74 and 4.05 micron reveal the structured butterfly-shaped dusty environment close to the central star with an unprecedented spatial resolution of about 60 mas. VINCI has resolved the present-day stellar wind of Eta Carinae on a scale of several stellar radii owing to the spatial resolution of the order of 5 mas (11 AU). The VINCI observations show th…
Investigating the environment of the massive black hole SgrA* at the center of the Galaxy requires the highest angular resolution available to avoid source confusion and to study the physical properties of the individual objects. GCIRS7 has been used as wavefront and astrometric reference. Our studies investigate, for the first time, its properties at 2&10um using VLTI/AMBER and MIDI. We aim at analyzing the suitability of IRS7 as an IF-phase-reference for the upcoming generation of dual-field facilities at optical interferometers. We observed with (R~30) and 50m (proj.) baseline, resulting in…
We present the first high spatial resolution monitoring of the dust forming nova V1280 Sco performed with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Spectra and visibilities were obtained from the onset of the dust formation 23 days after discovery till day 145, using the instruments AMBER and MIDI. These interferometric observations are complemented by near-infrared data from the 1.2m Mt. Abu Infrared Observatory, India. The observations are first interpreted with simple models but more complex models, involving a second shell, are necessary to explain the data obtained from t=110d after…
We present the first near-infrared K-band long-baseline interferometric measurement of the prototype Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 with resolution lambda/B \~ 10 mas obtained with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) and the two 8.2m Unit Telescopes UT2 and UT3. The adaptive optics system MACAO was employed to deliver wavefront-corrected beams to the K-band commissioning instrument VINCI. A squared visibility amplitude of 16.3 +/- 4.3 % was measured for NGC 1068 at a sky-projected baseline length of 45.8 m and azimuth angle 44.9 deg. This value corresponds to a FWHM of the K-band intensi…
We present interferometric and single-dish mid-infrared observations of a sample of massive young stellar objects (BN-type objects), using VLTI-MIDI (10 micron) and Subaru-COMICS (24.5 micron). We discuss the regions S140, Mon R2, M8E-IR, and W33A. The observations probe the inner regions of the dusty envelope at scales of 50 milli arcsecond and 0.6 arcsec (100-1000 AU), respectively. Simultaneous model fits to spectral energy distributions and spatial data are achieved using self-consistent spherical envelope modelling. We conclude that those MYSO envelopes that are best described by a spheri…
We study the close circumstellar environment of the nearby S-type star Pi^1 Gruis using high spatial-resolution, mid-infrared observations from the ESO/VLTI. Spectra and visibilities were obtained with the MIDI interferometer on the VLT Auxiliary Telescopes. The cool M5III giant Beta Gruis was used as bright primary calibrator, and a dedicated spectro-interferometric study was undertaken to determine its angular diameter accurately. The MIDI measurements were fitted with the 1D numerical radiative transfer code DUSTY to determine the dust shell parameters of Pi^1 Gruis. Taking into account the…
We aim at getting high spatial resolution information on the dusty core of bipolar planetary nebulae to directly constrain the shaping process. Methods: We present observations of the dusty core of the extreme bipolar planetary nebula Menzel 3 (Mz 3, Hen 2-154, the Ant) taken with the mid-infrared interferometer MIDI/VLTI and the adaptive optics NACO/VLT. The core of Mz 3 is clearly resolved with MIDI in the interferometric mode, whereas it is unresolved from the Ks to the N bands with single dish 8.2 m observations on a scale ranging from 60 to 250 mas. A striking dependence of the dust core …
Dusty tori have been suggested to play a crucial role in determining the physical characteristics of active galactic nuclei (AGN), but investigation of their properties has stalled for lack of high resolution mid-IR imaging. Recently, a long-awaited breakthrough in this field was achieved: NGC 1068, a nearby AGN, was the first extragalactic object to be observed with a mid-IR interferometer, thereby obtaining the needed angular resolution to study the alleged torus. In this proceeding, first the field of AGN research is briefly reviewed, with an emphasis on models of dusty tori. Second, the ge…
R Coronae Borealis variable stars are suspected to sporadically eject optically thick dust clouds causing, when one of them lies on the line-of-sight, a huge brightness decline in visible light. Mid-infrared interferometric observations of RYSgr allowed us to explore the circumstellar regions very close to the central star (~20-40 mas) in order to look for the signature of any heterogeneities. Using the VLTI/MIDI instrument, five dispersed visibility curves were recorded with different projected baselines oriented towards two roughly perpendicular directions. The large spatial frequencies visi…
The very inner structure of massive YSOs is difficult to trace. With conventional observational methods we often identify structures still several hundreds of AU in size. But we also need information about the innermost regions where the actual mass transfer onto the forming high-mass star occurs. An innovative way to probe these scales is to utilise mid-infrared interferometry. Here, we present first results of our MIDI GTO programme at the VLTI. We observed 10 well-known massive YSOs down to scales of 20 mas. We clearly resolve these objects which results in low visibilities and sizes in the…
We study the geometry and the physical conditions in the inner (AU-scale) circumstellar region around the young Herbig Be star MWC 147 using long-baseline spectro-interferometry in the near-infrared (NIR K-band, VLTI/AMBER observations and PTI archive data) as well as the mid-infrared (MIR N-band, VLTI/MIDIobservations). The emission from MWC 147 is clearly resolved and has a characteristic physical size of approx. 1.3 AU and 9 AU at 2.2 micron and 11 micron respectively (Gaussian diameter). The spectrally dispersed AMBER and MIDI interferograms both show a strong increase in the characteristi…
The very inner structure of massive young stellar objects (YSOs) is difficult to trace. With conventional observational methods we identify structures still several hundreds of AU in size. However, the (proto-)stellar growth takes place at the innermost regions (<100 AU) where the actual mass transfer onto the forming high-mass star occurs. We present results from our programme toward massive YSOs at the VLTI, utilising the two-element interferometer MIDI. To date, we observed 10 well-known massive YSOs down to scales of 20 mas (typically corresponding to 20 - 40 AU for our targets) in the 8-1…
We present the first mid-IR long baseline interferometric observations of the circumstellar matter around binary post-AGB stars. Two objects, SX Cen and HD 52961, were observed using the VLTI/MIDI instrument during Science Demonstration Time. Both objects are known binaries for which a stable circumbinary disc is proposed to explain the SED characteristics. This is corroborated by our N-band spectrum showing a crystallinity fraction of more than 50 % for both objects, pointing to a stable environment where dust processing can occur. Surprisingly, the dust surrounding SX Cen is not resolved in …
We present mid-infrared interferometric observations of the Herbig Ae star R CrA obtained with MIDI at the VLTI using several projected baselines in the UT2-UT3 configuration. The observations show resolved circumstellar emission in the wavelength range 8-13 micron on a ~6 AU scale with a non-symmetric intensity distribution, providing support for an inclined disk geometry. Visibilities are best fitted using a uniform ring model with outer radius in the range 6-10 AU, in the wavelength range 8-13 micron. The inclination of the ring with respect to the plane of the sky is found to be ~45 deg., …
The study of the atmosphere of red supergiant stars in general and of Betelgeuse (alpha Orionis) in particular is of prime importance to understand dust formation and how mass is lost to the interstellar medium in evolved massive stars. A molecular shell, the MOLsphere (Tsuji, 2000a), in the atmosphere of Betelgeuse has been proposed to account for the near- and mid-infrared spectroscopic observations of Betelgeuse. The goal is to further test this hypothesis and to identify some of the molecules in this MOLsphere. We report on measurements taken with the mid-infrared two-telescope beam combin…
GCIRS3 is the most prominent MIR source in the central pc of the Galaxy. NIR spectroscopy failed to solve the enigma of its nature. The properties of extreme individual objects of the central stellar cluster contribute to our knowledge of star and dust formation close to a supermassive black hole. We initiated an interferometric experiment to understand IRS3 and investigate its properties as spectroscopic and interferometric reference star at 10um. VISIR imaging separates a compact source from diffuse, surrounding emission. The VLTI/MIDI instrument was used to measure visibilities at 10mas res…
Tori of Active Galactic Nuclei are made up of a mixture of hot and cold gas, as well as dust. In order to protect the dust grains from destruction by the hot gas as well as by the energetic radiation of the accretion disk, the dust is often assumed to be distributed in clouds. In our new 3D model of AGN dust tori, the torus is modelled as a wedge-shaped disk in which dusty clouds are randomly distributed, by taking the dust density distribution of the corresponding continuous model into account. We especially concentrate on the differences between clumpy and continuous models in terms of the t…
We present observations of the famous OH/IR star OH26.5+0.6 obtained using the Mid-Infrared Interferometric Instrument MIDI at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Very Large Telescope Interferometer VLTI. The emission of the dusty envelope, spectrally dispersed at a resolution of 30 from 8 to 13.5 micron, appears resolved by a single dish UT telescope. In particular the angular diameter increases strongly within the silicate absorption band. Moreover an acquisition image taken at 8.7 micron exhibits, after deconvolution, a strong asymmetry. The axis ratio is 0.75+/-0.07 with the FWHM of th…
We report the results of interferometric observations of Centaurus A with the MID-infrared Interferometer (MIDI) at ESO's VLTI telescope array. The interferometric measurements are spectrally resolved (R = 30) in the wavelength range 8 to 13 micron. Their spatial resolution reaches 15 mas at the shortest wavelengths. Supplementary observations were obtained in the near-infrared with the adaptive optics instrument NACO, and at mm wavelengths with SEST and JCMT. We find that he mid-infrared emission from the core of Centaurus A is dominated by an unresolved point source (<10 mas). Observations w…
We explore physically self-consistent models of dusty molecular tori in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with the goal of interpreting VLTI observations and fitting high resolution mid-IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs). The input dust distribution is analytically calculated by assuming hydrostatic equilibrium between pressure forces - due to the turbulent motion of the gas clouds - and gravitational and centrifugal forces as a result of the contribution of the nuclear stellar distribution and the central black hole. For a fully three-dimensional treatment of the radiative transfer problem th…
