We present interferometric and single-dish mid-infrared observations of a sample of massive young stellar objects (BN-type objects), using VLTI-MIDI (10 micron) and Subaru-COMICS (24.5 micron). We discuss the regions S140, Mon R2, M8E-IR, and W33A. The observations probe the inner regions of the dusty envelope at scales of 50 milli arcsecond and 0.6 arcsec (100-1000 AU), respectively. Simultaneous model fits to spectral energy distributions and spatial data are achieved using self-consistent spherical envelope modelling. We conclude that those MYSO envelopes that are best described by a spherical geometry, the commensurate density distribution is a powerlaw with index -1.0. Such a powerlaw is predicted if the envelope is supported by turbulence on the 100-1000AU scales probed with MIDI and COMICS, but the role of rotation at these spatial scales need testing.
The young massive stellar object G35.20-0.74 was observed in the mid-infrared using T-ReCS on Gemini South. Previous observations have shown that the near infrared emission has a fan-like morphology that is consistent with emission from the northern lobe of a bipolar radio jet known to be associated with this source. Mid-infrared observations presented in this paper show a monopolar jet-like morphology as well, and it is argued that the mid-infrared emission observed is dominated by thermal continuum emission from dust. The mid-infrared emission nearest the central stellar source is believed t…
We present here mid-infrared images of seven sites of water maser emission thought to be associated with the hot molecular core (HMC) phase of massive star formation. Observations were obtained at the NASA InfraRed Telescope Facility 3-m, the Gemini 8-m, and Keck II 10-m telescopes. We have detected mid-infrared sources at the locations of two HMC candidates, G11.94-0.62 and G45.07-0.13. We observed G19.61-0.23 and G34.26+0.15, each of which have HMCs previously detected in the mid-infrared. We did not detect mid-infrared emission from either HMC source, and we place new upper limits on the mi…
We broadly discuss mid-infrared spectroscopy and detail our new high spectral resolution instrument, the Texas Echelon-cross-Echelle Spectrograph (TEXES).
We have observed 14 nearby (z<0.16) Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) with Spitzer at 3.6-24 microns. The underlying host galaxies are well-detected, in addition to the luminous nuclear cores. While the spatial resolution of Spitzer is poor, the great sensitivity of the data reveals the underlying galaxy merger remnant, and provides the first look at off-nuclear mid-infrared activity.
The mid-infrared emission at the center of IRAS 21026+4104 is not that of a simple compact source, as one would expect from an isolated high mass protostellar object. Furthermore the central thermal infrared emission does not appear to be coming directly from a circumstellar disk as has been recently hypothesized from near-infrared observations. The mid-infrared structure is complex, but with the help of multiple wavelength information two plausible scenarios to explain the emission in the region are advanced. The first is that there is a tight cluster of young stellar objects here. The second…
We present mid-infrared maps and preliminary analysis for 61 galaxies observed with the ISOCAM instrument aboard the Infrared Space Observatory. Many of the general features of galaxies observed at optical wavelengths---spiral arms, disks, rings, and bright knots of emission---are also seen in the mid-infrared, except the prominent optical bulges are absent at 6.75 and 15 microns. In addition, the maps are quite similar at 6.75 and 15 microns, except for a few cases where a central starburst leads to lower 6.75/15 ratios in the inner region. We also present infrared flux densities and mid-infr…
Observations of the planetary nebulae NGC6302, NGC6543 and NGC7027 by the Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) have been used to determine rest wavelengths of spectral lines. We report on improved accuracies for wavelengths of 7 mid-infrared ionic fine structure lines.
We report mid-infrared observations of several luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) carried out with the Infrared Space Observatory. Our sample was chosen to represent different phases of a merger sequence of galaxy-galaxy interaction with special emphasis on early/intermediate stages of merging. The mid-infrared emission of these LIGs shows extended structures for the early and intermediate mergers, indicating that most of the mid-infrared luminosities are not from a central active galactic nucleus (AGN). Both the infrared hardness (indicated by the IRAS 12, 25, and 60 $\micron$ flux density rat…
We investigated with MIDI the extension of dusty mid-infrared excess sources (IRS 1W, IRS 10W, IRS 2, IRS 8) in immediate vicinity to the black hole (BH) at the GC. We derive 3$σ$ upper limits of the correlated fluxes of our target sources which give direct constraints on the size of the emitting regions. Most probably the emission originates from bow shocks generated by windy stars ploughing through the dense matter of the Northern MiniSpiral.
This article presents a review of all high-resolution ground-based mid-infrared observations of high mass protostellar objects (HMPOs) to date. An introduction to the characteristics of HMPOs and their relationship to the hot molecular core phase of massive star formation is outlined. I explain why observations in the mid-infrared of these types of sources are important, and in particular why high-resolution observations are needed. A summary is given of the earliest mid-infrared detections of HMPOs, followed by a detailed account of the most recent observations.
We present diffraction-limited images in the 11.3 micron PAH band and in the continuum at 11.9 microns of the S287B star forming region obtained with the newly commissioned mid-infrared imager/spectrometer VISIR at the VLT. In both filters five point-like sources are detected, of which at least one has a spectral energy distribution reminiscent of a Lada Class I source. We also report on the discovery of a new Herbig Ae star in this region. It is particularly striking that the brightest mid-infrared source in this region has not been detected at shorter wavelengths; it is a good candidate to b…
Using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have obtained rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of two bright submillimeter galaxies. SMMJ02399-0136 at z=2.81 shows a superposition of PAH emission features and a mid-infrared continuum, indicating significant and roughly equal contributions to its bolometric luminosity from star formation and from a Compton-thick AGN. We derive a new redshift of z=2.80 for MMJ154127+6616 from the IRS spectrum and find this object is dominated by starburst PAH emission. The rest frame mid- to far-infrared spectral energy distrib…
Fluxes are measured for the DA white dwarf plus brown dwarf pair GD 1400 with the Infrared Array Camera on the {\em Spitzer Space Telescope}. GD 1400 displays an infrared excess over the entire $3-8μ$m region consistent with the presence of a mid- to late-type L dwarf companion. A discussion is given regarding current knowledge of this unique system.
We present an analysis of brown dwarf model spectra in the mid-infrared spectral region (5 - 20 microns), in anticipation of data obtained with the Space Infrared Telescope Facility. The mid-infrared spectra of brown dwarfs are in several ways simpler than those in the near-infrared and yet provide powerful diagnostics of brown dwarf atmospheric physics and chemistry, especially when combined with ground-based data. We discuss the possibility of detection of new molecular species and of the silicate cloud, predict strong observational diagnostics for non-equilibrium chemistry between CO and CH…
Galaxy source counts that simultaneously fit the deep mid-infrared surveys at 24 microns and 15 microns made by the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) respectively are presented for two phenomenological models. The models are based on starburst and luminous infrared galaxy dominated populations. Both models produce excellent fits to the counts in both wavebands and provide an explanation for the high redshift population seen in the longer Spitzer 24 micron band supporting the hypothesis that they are luminous-ultraluminous infrared galaxies at z=2-3, being the mid…
We present rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 13 submillimeter galaxies, obtained using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The sample includes exclusively bright objects from blank fields and cluster lens assisted surveys that have accurate interferometric positions. We find that the majority of spectra are well fitted by a starburst template or by the superposition of PAH emission features and a weak mid-infrared continuum, the latter a tracer of Active Galactic Nuclei (including Compton-thick ones). We obtain mid-infrared spectroscopic reds…
We present arcsecond resolution mid-infrared (8--13 $μ$m) images and photometry of four young stellar objects (YSOs)~--- L1551-IRS5, HL~Tau, AS~205, and AS~209 (V1121~Oph)~--- taken with the Berkeley Mid-Infrared Camera. For AS~205, a known T Tauri binary, we also present near-infrared JHK images and HKL$^{\prime}$ speckle imaging data. All three single stars are unresolved in our mid-IR images. Our data is the first to resolve in the mid-IR both components of the close binary AS~205 (projected separation $\sim$1.3$^{\prime \prime}$ (210~A.U.)). AS~205~North is the IR brighter star in our data…
A mid-infrared atlas of part of the Galactic plane ($75^\circ < l < 148^\circ, b = \pm6^\circ$) has been constructed using HIRES processed infrared data to provide a mid-infrared data set for the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS). The addition of this data set to the CGPS will enable the study of the emission from the smallest components of interstellar dust at an angular resolution comparable to that of the radio, millimetre, and far-infrared data in the CGPS. The Mid-Infrared Galaxy Atlas (MIGA) is a mid-infrared (12 $μ$m and 25 $μ$m) counterpart to the far-infrared IRAS Galaxy Atlas (IG…
Mid-infrared (10-25 \micron) imaging of the protostellar binary system L1448N-IRS3(A,B) is presented. Only one source, IRS3(A), was detected at mid-infrared wavelengths -- all of the mid-infrared emission from IRS3(A,B) emanates from IRS3(A). The mid-infrared luminosity of IRS3(A) is $L_{midir} = 1.3(\frac{d}{300\rm{pc}})^2 L_\sun$, which yields a central source mass, depending on the mass infall rate, of $M_* = 0.2 M_\sun \frac{10^{-6}M_\sun yr^{-1}}{\dot M}$. The envelope mass surrounding IRS3(A) is $\sim 0.15 M_\sun$, suggesting that the central source and the envelope are of comparable mas…
Effects of young stellar clusters on their gas and dust environment are probed using mid-infrared (MIR) wavelengths. The strong MIR [NeIII]/[NeII] ratios (5 to 10) reveal the presence of current massive stars less than 5 Myr. Using MIR line ratios along with optical and NIR data from the literature, composite SEDs are constructed for NGC 1569, NGC 1140 and IIZw40. The stellar SEDs are then used as input to a dust model to study the impact of the hard, penetrating radiation field on the dust components, particularly in low metallicity environments, where the destructive effects of the massive s…
We describe the TEXES survey for mid-IR H2 pure rotational emission from young stars and report early successes. H2 emission is a potential tracer of warm gas in circumstellar disks. Three pure rotational lines are available from the ground: the J=3=>1, J=4=>2, and J=6=>4, transitions at 17.035 microns, 12.279 microns, and 8.025 microns, respectively. Using TEXES at the NASA IRTF 3m, we are midway through a survey of roughly 30 pre-main-sequence stars. To date, detected lines are all resolved, generally with FWHM<10 km/s. Preliminary analysis suggests the gas temperatures are between 400 and 8…
We use mid-infrared spectral decomposition to separate the 6micron mid-infrared AGN continuum from the host emission in the ISO low resolution spectra of 71 active galaxies and compare the results to observed and intrinsic 2-10keV hard X-ray fluxes from the literature. We find a correlation between mid-infrared luminosity and absorption corrected hard X-ray luminosity, but the scatter is about an order of magnitude, significantly larger than previously found with smaller statistics. Main contributors to this scatter are likely variations in the geometry of absorbing dust, and AGN variability i…
From the disk of normal galaxies to the nucleus of prototype active sources, we review the wealth of results and new understanding provided by recent infrared probes and, in particular, the four instruments on-board of ISO.
Mid-infrared observations (3.6 - 24 microns) of normal giant elliptical galaxies with the Spitzer space telescope are consistent with pure populations of very old stars with no evidence of younger stars. Most of the stars in giant elliptical galaxies are old but the mean stellar age determined from Balmer absorption in optical spectra can appear much younger due to a small admixture of younger stars. The mean stellar age can also be determined from the spectral energy distribution in the mid-infrared which decreases with time relative to the optical emission and shifts to shorter wavelengths. …
We report on an infrared 1 to 17 micron study of the nearby (cz = 4600 km/s) interacting spiral galaxy system, UGC 12914/12915, using the ground-based Palomar 200" telescope and PFIRCAM near-infrared detector and space-based mid-infrared imaging and spectral observations using ISOCAM and Phot-S on the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Strong line emission from aromatic band features at 6.2, 7.7 and 11.3 microns are seen in both the mid-IR imaging and Phot-S spectro-photometry centered on the nuclei. In the connecting bridge, the mid-infrared imaging reveals dust grains intermixed with the atom…
We present new mid-infrared observations of objects in the vicinity of the O-star sigma Orionis, obtained with TIMMI-2 at ESO. By constraining their near- and mid-infrared spectral energy distributions, we established the nature of previously known IRAS sources and identified new mid-infrared sources as young stellar objects with circumstellar disks, likely massive members of the sigma Ori cluster. For two of these objects we have obtained spectroscopy in the 8-13 micron range in order to investigate the chemistry of the dust grains. TX Ori exhibits a typical silicate emission feature at 10 mi…
We have investigated mid-infrared spectra of Earth obtained by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument on-board the AQUA spacecraft to explore the characteristics that may someday be observed in extrasolar terrestrial planets. We have used the AIRS infrared (R ~ 1200; 3.75-15.4 microns) spectra to construct directly-observed high-resolution spectra of the only known life bearing planet, Earth. The AIRS spectra are the first such spectra that span the seasons. We investigate the rotational and seasonal spectral variations that would arise due to varying cloud amount and viewing geome…
Nulling interferometry is an astronomical technique that combines equal wavefronts to achieve a deep rejection ratio of an on-axis star, and that could permit to detect Earth-like planets in the mid-infrared band 5 -- 20 microns. Similarly to what is done in the near-infrared, high frequencies spatial filtering of the incoming beams can be achieved using single-mode waveguides operating in the mid-infrared. An appreciable reduction of the instrumental complexity is also possible using integrated optics (IO) devices in this spectral range. The relative lack of single-mode guided optics in the m…
We present here a mid-infrared imaging survey of 26 sites of water maser emission. Observations were obtained at the InfraRed Telescope Facility 3-m telescope with the University of Florida mid-infrared imager/spectrometer OSCIR, and the JPL mid-infrared camera MIRLIN. The main purpose of the survey was to explore the relationship between water masers and the massive star formation process. It is generally believed that water masers predominantly trace outflows and embedded massive stellar objects, but may also exist in circumstellar disks around young stars. We investigate each of these possi…
We made model fitting to the mid-to-far infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for different categories of galaxies in the main extragalactic field of the {\it Spitzer} First Look Survey with the aid of spectroscopic information from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that the mid-to-far infrared SEDs of HII galaxies, mixture type galaxies and LINERs can be well fitted by the one-parameter ($α$) dust model of Dale et al. plus the 13 Gyr dust-free elliptical galaxy model. The statistics of $α$ values indicates that all these galaxies tend to be quiescent, although the HII galaxies are…
Thanks to the high spatial resolution afforded by 8-10m class telescopes, we are beginning to learn that some sources are extended in their mid-infrared emission because of dusty outflows or heated outflow cavity walls. Therefore one must be extremely careful in interpreting the nature of extended mid-infrared sources (i.e. just because it is extended does not automatically mean it is a disk!).
A mid-infrared atlas of the Galactic Plane (MIGA) has been constructed to provide a mid-infrared data set for the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey, an international project to map all of the major components of the interstellar medium of the Milky Way at a common resolution of approximately 1'. The atlas is based on HIRES processing of IRAS 12 and 25 micron data. Details of the MIGA production and applications of the atlas are discussed and illustrated.
We present infrared observations of four young stellar objects using the Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI). For three of the sources, T Tau, MWC 147 and SU Aur, the 2.2 micron emission is resolved at PTI's nominal fringe spacing of 4 milliarcsec (mas), while the emission region of AB Aur is over-resolved on this scale. We fit the observations with simple circumstellar material distributions and compare our data to the predictions of accretion disk models inferred from spectral energy distributions. We find that the infrared emission region is tenths of AU in size for T Tau and SU Aur and ~1…
Mid-infrared photometry provides a robust technique for identifying active galaxies. While the ultraviolet to mid-infrared continuum of normal galaxies is dominated by the composite stellar black body curve and peaks at approximately 1.6 microns, the ultraviolet to mid-infrared continuum of active galaxies is dominated by a power law. Consequently, with sufficient wavelength baseline, one can easily distinguish AGN from stellar populations. Mirroring the tendency of AGN to be bluer than galaxies in the ultraviolet, where galaxies (and stars) sample the blue, rising portion of stellar spectra, …
We have observed in the mid-infrared (4-18 micron) the counterpart of the compact object GRS 1915+105, and the western jet of SS433. The images were carried out with the ISOCAM infrared camera on board of the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The mid-infrared photometry of GRS 1915+105 shows the presence of an additional contribution besides the synchrotron emission. The 15 micron images of the large-scale western lobe of the SS433/W50 nebula are compared to the radio and X-ray ones. They show infrared synchrotron emission on the western edge of SS433/W50 lobe.
Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs) represent the earliest observed stages of clustered star formation, characterized by large column densities of cold and dense molecular material observed in silhouette against a bright background of mid-IR emission. Up to now, IRDCs were predominantly known toward the inner Galaxy where background infrared emission levels are high. We present Spitzer observations with the Infrared Camera Array toward object G111.80+0.58 (G111) in the outer Galactic Plane, located at a distance of ~3 kpc from us and ~10 kpc from the Galactic center. Earlier results show that G111 is…
We have imaged two bona-fide brown dwarfs with TReCS/GEMINI-S and find mid-infrared excess emission that can be explained by optically thick dust disk models. In the case of the young ($\approx$2Myr) Cha H$α$1 we measure fluxes at 10.4$μ$m and 12.3$μ$m that are fully consistent with a standard flared disk model and prominent silicate emission. For the $\approx$ 10Myr old brown dwarf 2MASS1207-3932 located in the TW Hydrae association we find excess emission at 8.7$μ$m and 10.4$μ$m with respect to its photosphere, and confirm disk accretion as likely cause of its strong activity. Disks around b…
The U. C. Berkeley Infrared Spatial Interferometer has been outfitted with a filterbank system to allow interferometric observations of mid-infrared spectral lines with very high spectral resolution (R ~ 10^5). This paper describes the design, implementation, and performance of the matched 32-channel filterbank modules, and new spectral line observations of Mars and IRC+10216 are used to demonstrate their scientific capability. In addition, observing strategies are discussed for accurate calibration of fringe visibilities in spectral lines, despite strong atmospheric fluctuations encountered i…
New tools from Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) mid-infrared spectroscopy have recently become available to determine the power sources of dust-obscured ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We compare ISO classifications - starburst or active galactic nucleus (AGN) - with classifications from optical spectroscopy, and with optical/near-infrared searches for hidden broad-line regions. The agreement between mid-infrared and optical classification is excellent if optical LINER spectra are assigned to the starburst group. The starburst nature of ULIRG LINERs strongly supports the suggestion t…
We present an analysis of the effects of luminosity on the shape of the mid-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 234 radio-quiet quasars originally presented by Richards et al. In quasars without evident dust extinction, the spectrally integrated optical and infrared luminosities are linearly correlated over nearly three decades in luminosity. We find a significant (>99.99% confidence) correlation between the 1.8-8.0 micron spectral index and infrared luminosity that indicates an enhancement of the mid-infrared continuum with increasing luminosity. Coupled with strong evidence for …
We report results from the first mid-infrared spectroscopic study of a comprehensive sample of 33 LINERs, observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We compare the properties of two different LINER populations: infrared-faint LINERs, with LINER emission arising mostly in compact nuclear regions, and infrared-luminous LINERs, which often show spatially extended (non-AGN) LINER emission. We show that these two populations can be easily distinguished by their mid-infrared spectra in three different ways: (i) their mid-IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs), (ii) the emission features of polycycl…
The relation between the X-ray emission, the infrared emission and the coronal line emission in a sample of the brightest known Seyfert galaxies is analyzed. A close relationship between the absorption-corrected soft X-ray emission and both the mid-infrared and the coronal line emission is found among the Seyfert type 2 objects studied in this work. Being both the coronal line and the X-ray emissions main tracers of the AGN activity, their relation with the mid-infrared emission adds further support to the claim that the mid-infrared emission is primarily due to dust heated directly by the cen…
We present high angular resolution (~0.5") 10 and 18 micron images of the region around G29.96-0.02 taken from the Gemini North 8-m telescope using the mid-infrared imager and spectrometer OSCIR. These observations were centered on the location of a group of water masers, which delineate the site of a hot molecular core believed to contain an extremely young, massive star. We report here the direct detection of a hot molecular core at mid-infrared wavelengths at this location. The size and extent of the core at 18 microns appears to be very similar to the morphology as seen in integrated NH3 m…
We present 10 and 20 micron images of IRAS 19500-1709 taken with the mid-infrared camera, OSCIR, mounted on the Gemini North Telescope. We use a 2-D dust radiation transport code to fit the spectral energy distribution from UV to sub-mm wavelengths and to simulate the images.
In this paper I summarize the science motivations, as well as a few mid-infrared spectroscopic methods used to identify the principal mechanisms of energy production in dust enshrouded galactic nuclei. The development of the various techniques is briefly discussed. Emphasis is given to the use of the data which are becoming available with the infrared spectrograph (IRS) on Spitzer, as well as the results which have been obtained by IRS over the past two years.
We report on mid-infrared imaging observations of the anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) 1E 1048.1-5937, 1RXS J170849-400910, and XTE J1810-197. The observations were carried out at 4.5 and 8.0 microns with the Infrared Array Camera and at 24 microns with the Multiband Imaging Photometer on the Spitzer Space Telescope. No mid-infrared counterparts were detected. As infrared emission from AXPs may be related to their X-ray emission either via the magnetosphere or via a dust disk, we compare the derived upper limits on the infrared/X-ray flux ratios of the AXPs to the same ratio for 4U 0142+61, an A…
We present Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) observations of eleven intermediate polars (IPs). Spectra covering the wavelength range from 5.2 to 14 $μ$m are presented for all eleven objects, and longer wavelength spectra are presented for three objects (AE Aqr, EX Hya, and V1223 Sgr). We also present new, moderate resolution (R $\sim$ 2000) near-infrared spectra for five of the program objects. We find that, in general, the mid-infrared spectra are consistent with simple power laws that extend from the optical into the mid-infrared. There is no evidence for discrete cyclotron emission featur…
Imaging and spectroscopic observations in the mid-infrared wavelength range (5$μ$m--30$μ$m) offer valuable insight into the origins of stars and planets. Sensitive new array detectors on 8-meter class telescopes make it possible to study a wide range of phenomena, from protoplanetary disks to starburst galaxies, in unprecedented detail. I review the capablities of ground-based mid-infrared instruments (e.g., high spatial resolution) and their limitations (e.g., poor sensitivity, small field of view) using several examples in the field of star formation, and discuss prospects for the near futur…
We have carried out near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 23 very low-luminosity young stellar object (YSO) candidates and 5 their companions in Heiles Cloud 2, one of the densest parts of the Taurus molecular cloud. Twelve objects were confirmed as YSOs by Br gamma feature. The effective temperatures of the YSOs and of the companions are estimated from the 2.26 micron feature, the 2.21 micron feature, and the H2O band strengths. Detailed comparisons of our photometric and spectroscopic observations with evolutionary tracks on the HR diagram suggest some objects to be very low-mass YSOs.
The mid infrared emission of early type galaxies traces the presence of intermediate age stellar populations as well as even tiny amounts of ongoing star formation. Here we discuss high S/N Spitzer IRS spectra of a sample of Virgo early type galaxies, with particular reference to NGC 4435. We show that, by combining mid infrared spectroscopic observations with existing broad band fluxes, it is possible to obtain a very clean picture of the nuclear activity in this galaxy.
We have combined up-to-date stellar population synthesis models, a simple radiative transfer approach, and a fully comprehensive dust model with the aim of developing a simple but quantitative way of interpreting the mid-infrared spectra of galaxies. We apply these models to the observed correlations of mid-infrared luminosities (at 8 and 24 micron) with the star-formation rate of normal galaxies and find that the observations are naturally reproduced by our models. We further find that the observed 24 micron correlation places a weak constraint on relative distribution of dust and stars.
We present photometry in the J and K near-infrared bands for two regions centered on the young open clusters NGC 1893 and Berkeley 86. We study 700 stars down to K = 17 in the field of NGC 1893, and about 2000 stars in the field of Berkeley 86 down to K$\sim$ 16.5, for which near-infrared photometry was insofar not available. Coupling J-K data with UBV photometry taken from literature, we produce reddening corrected colour-magnitude diagrams. We find that our data are consistent with previous determinations: the clusters are roughly coeval with an age between 4 and 6 million years. The mean re…
(abridged) We present panoramic Spitzer MIPS 24um observations covering 9x9Mpc (25'x25') fields around two massive clusters, Cl0024+16 and MS0451-03, at z=0.39 and z=0.55. Our observations cover a very wide range of environments within these clusters, from high-density regions around the cores out to the turn-around radius. Cross-correlating the mid-infrared catalogs with deep optical and near-infrared imaging of these fields, we investigate the optical/near-infrared colors of the mid-infrared sources. We find excesses of mid-infrared sources with optical/near-infrared colors expected of clust…
Observations of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with an achieved resolution approaching the diffraction limit in the mid-infrared from 8 - 25 $μ$m using the Keck Telescopes are reported. We find extremely compact structures, with spatial scales of $< 0.3''$ (diameter) in six of the seven ULIRGs observed. These compact sources emit between 30% and 100% of the mid-infrared energy from these galaxies. We have utilized the compact mid-infrared structures as a diagnostic of whether an AGN or a compact (100 -- 300 pc) starburst is the primary power source in these ULIRGs. In Markarian 231, …
The Infrared Camera (IRC) is one of the two instruments on board the AKARI satellite. In addition to deep imaging from 1.8-26.5um for the pointed observation mode of the AKARI, it has a spectroscopic capability in its spectral range. By replacing the imaging filters by transmission-type dispersers on the filter wheels, it provides low-resolution (lambda/d_lambda ~ 20-120) spectroscopy with slits or in a wide imaging field-of-view (approximately 10'X10'). The IRC spectroscopic mode is unique in space infrared missions in that it has the capability to perform sensitive wide-field spectroscopic s…
We report on mid-infrared (MIR) continuum and line emission mapping of the nucleus of NGC 253. The data, with a resolution of 1\as.4, reveal a double-peaked arc-like [NeII] emission region. Comparison with published data shows that the [NeII] arc is centered on the nucleus of the galaxy. The brightest [NeII] source coincides with the infrared continuum peak. The interpretation of these results is complicated by the edge-on orientation of NGC 253, but a self-consistent explanation is starformation triggered by dynamical resonances in a barred potential.
We report the initial results from a Spitzer GO-1 program to obtain low resolution, mid-infrared spectra of infrared luminous galaxies at z~1-2. This paper presents the spectra of eight sources observed with the Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS). Of the eight spectra, six have mid-IR spectral features, either emission from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) or silicate absorption. Based on these mid-IR features, the inferred six redshifts are in the range of 1.8-2.6. The remaining two spectra detect only strong continua, thus do not yield redshift information. Strong, multiple PAH emissio…
We present broad-band infrared photometry for 52 late-type supergiants in the young Magellanic Clouds clusters NGC 330, NGC 1818, NGC 2004 and NGC 2100. Standard models are seen to differ in the temperature they predict for the red supergiant population on the order of 300K. It appears that these differences most probably due to the calibration of the mixing-length parameter, $α_{P}$, in the outermost layers of the stellar envelope. Due to the apparent model dependent nature of $α_{P}$ we do not quantitatively compare $α_{P}$ between models. Qualitatively, we find that $α_{P}$ decreases with i…
Most, if not all, stars are now believed to produce energetic outflows during their formation. Yet, almost 20 years after the discovery of bipolar outflows from young stars, the origins of this violent phenomenon are not well understood. One of the difficulties of probing the outflow process, particularly in the case of massive embedded stars, is a deficit of high spatial resolution observations. Here, we present sub-arcsecond-resolution mid-infrared images of one massive young stellar object, AFGL 2591, and its immediate surroundings. Our images, at 11.7, 12.5 and 18.0 microns, reveal a knot …
