We have studied the relationship between the [O IV] lambda 25.89 micron emission line luminosities, obtained from Spitzer spectra, the X-ray continua in the 2-10 keV band, primarily from ASCA, and the 14-195 keV band obtained with the SWIFT/Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), for a sample of nearby (z < 0.08) Seyfert galaxies. For comparison, we have examined the relationship between the [O III] 5007, the 2-10 keV and the 14-195 keV luminosities for the same set of objects. We find that both the [O IV] and [O III] luminosities are well-correlated with the BAT luminosities. On the other hand, the [O III] luminosities are better-correlated with 2-10 keV luminosities than are those of [O IV]. When comparing [O IV] and [O III] luminosities for the different types of galaxies, we find that the Seyfert 2's have significantly lower [O III] to [O IV] ratios than the Seyfert 1's. We suggest that this is due to more reddening of the narrow line region (NLR) of the Seyfert 2's. Assuming Galactic dust to gas ratios, the average amount of extra reddening corresponds to a hydrogen column density of ~ few times 10^21 cm^-2, which is a small fraction of the X-ray absorbing columns in the Seyfert 2's. The combined effects of reddening and the X-ray absorption are the probable reason why the [O III] versus 2-10 keV correlation is better than the [O IV] versus 2-10 keV, since the [O IV] emission line is much less affected by extinction. Overall, we find the [O IV] to be an accurate and truly isotropic indicator of the power of the AGN. This suggests that it can be useful in deconvolving the contribution of the AGN and starburst to the spectrum of Compton-thick and/or X-ray weak sources.
We examine 112 Seyfert galaxies observed by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) at 1.6 microns. We find that ~50% of the Seyfert 2.0 galaxies which are part of the Revised Shapeley-Ames (RSA) Catalog or the CfA redshift sample contain unresolved continuum sources at 1.6 microns. All but a couple of the Seyfert 1.0-1.9 galaxies display unresolved continuum sources. The unresolved sources have fluxes of order a mJy, near-infrared luminosities of order 10^41 erg/s and absolute magnitudes M_H ~-16. Comparison non-Seyfert galaxies from the RSA Catalog display significantly fewer (~20%), somewhat lower…
New far-infrared photometry with ISOPHOT, onboard the Infrared Space Observatory, is presented for 58 galaxies with homogeneous published data for another 32 galaxies all belonging to the 12 micron galaxy sample. In total 29 Seyfert 1's, 35 Seyfert 2's and 12 starburst galaxies, about half of the 12 micron active galaxy sample, plus 14 normal galaxies for comparison. The ISO and the IRAS data are used to define color-color diagrams and spectral energy distributions (SED). Thermal dust emission at two temperatures (one cold at 15-30K and one warm at 50-70K) can fit the 60-200 micron SED, with a…
We discuss the properties of compact nuclear radio components in Seyfert galaxies from the extended 12-micron AGN sample of Rush et al.(1993). Our main results can be summarised as follows. Type 1 and type 2 Seyferts produce compact radio components which are indistinguishable in strength and aspect, indicating that their central engines are alike as proposed by the unification model. Infrared IRAS fluxes are more closely correlated with low-resolution radio fluxes than high-resolution radio fluxes, suggesting that they are dominated by kiloparsec-scale, extra-nuclear emission regions; extra-n…
We present infrared 2.8-4.1 micron slit spectra of 32 Seyfert 2 galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. The 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission feature was used to estimate the absolute magnitude of a compact nuclear starburst (< a few 100 pc in size) that is presumed to have occurred in the outer region of an obscuring dusty molecular torus around a central supermassive black hole. We detected 3.3 micron PAH emission in 11 of the 32 Seyfert 2 nuclei in our sample, providing evidence for the presence of compact nuclear starbursts in a significant fraction of Seyfert 2 …
We present a study of Seyfert 1.5-2.0 galaxies observed at two epochs with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) at 1.6 microns. We find that unresolved nuclear emission from 9 of 14 nuclei varies at the level of 10-40% on timescales of 0.7-14 months, depending upon the galaxy. A control sample of Seyfert galaxies lacking unresolved sources and galaxies lacking Seyfert nuclei show less than 3% instrumental variation in equivalent aperture measurements. This proves that the unresolved sources are non-stellar and associated with the central pc of active galactic nuclei. Unresolved sources in Seyfert …
We report on infrared K- (2-2.5 micron) and L-band (2.8-4.1 micron) slit spectroscopy of 23 Seyfert 1 galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. A polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission feature at 3.3 micron in the L band is primarily used to investigate nuclear star-forming activity in these galaxies. The 3.3 micron PAH emission is detected in 10 sources (=43%), demonstrating that detection of nuclear star-formation in a significant fraction of Seyfert 1 galaxies is now feasible. For the PAH-detected nuclei, the surface brightness values of the PAH emission are as high as those of typ…
We present near-infrared K-band slit spectra of the nuclei of 25 Seyfert 2 galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. The strength of the CO absorption features at 2.3-2.4 micron produced by stars is measured in terms of a spectroscopic CO index. A clear anti-correlation between the observed CO index and the nuclear K-L color is present, suggesting that a featureless hot dust continuum heated by an AGN contributes significantly to the observed K-band fluxes in the nuclei of Seyfert 2 galaxies. After correction for this AGN contribution, we estimate nuclear stellar K-band luminosities for all s…
We present 263 optical and near-infrared (NIR) images for 42 Seyfert 1s and 48 Seyfert 2s, selected from the Extended 12-micron Galaxy Sample. Elliptically-averaged profiles are derived from the images, and isophotal radii and magnitudes are calculated from these. We also report virtual aperture photometry, that judging from comparison with previous work, is accurate to roughly 0.05mag in the optical, and 0.07mag in the NIR. Our B-band isophotal magnitude and radii, obtained from ellipse fitting, are in good agreement with those of RC3. When compared with the B band, V, I, J, and K isophotal d…
We have studied the relationship between the high- and low-ionization [O IV] lambda 25.89 micron, [Ne III] lambda 15.56 micron and [Ne II] lambda 12.81 micron emission lines with the aim of constraining the active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star formation contributions for a sample of 103 Seyfert galaxies. We used the [O IV] and [Ne II] emission as tracers for the AGN power and star formation to investigate the ionization state of the emission-line gas. We find that Seyfert 2 galaxies have, on average, lower [O IV]/[Ne II] ratios than those of Seyfert 1 galaxies. This result suggests two possib…
We present 8.4 GHz VLA A-configuration observations of 87 sources from the mid-infrared-selected AGN sample of Rush et al (1993). These 0.25 arcsec resolution observations allow elongated radio structures tens of parsecs in size to be resolved and enable radio components smaller than 3.5 arcsec to be isolated from diffuse galactic disc emission. When combined with previous data, matched radio observations covering ninety percent of the sample have been collected and these represent the largest sub-arcsecond-resolution radio imaging survey of a homogeneously-selected sample of Seyfert galaxies …
We propose a new diagnostic of the ``dusty torus'' model for Seyfert nuclei. Dust grains in the torus are heated by the nuclear continuum, and reradiate mostly in the mid-infrared wavelengths. From the torus geometry, it is predicted that the emission at lambda < 10 micron has strong dependence on the viewing angle. Since the dependence is predicted to be insignificant at lambda > 10 micron, we study the flux ratio between 3.5 micron (L band) and 25 micron; R(L,25) = log [(nu_3.5 um S_nu_3.5 um)/(nu_25 um S_nu_25 um)]. In three different samples (optically selected, X-ray selected, and infrare…
The sample of IRAS galaxies with spectral energy distributions that peak near 60 microns are called Sixty Micron Peakers (SMPs or 60PKs). Their generally peculiar and amorphous morphologies, hot dust and lack of a cirrus component have been interpreted as being indicative of a recent interaction/merger event. Mid-infrared spectra of eight SMPs, obtained with ISOPHOT-S in the ~2-11 micron band are presented. Four of the observed sources are H II region-like (H2) galaxies, three are Seyfert 2 and one is unclassified. Emission attributed to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) at 6.2, 7.7 and …
The infrared is a key wavelength regime for probing the dusty, obscured nuclear regions of active galaxies. We present results from an infrared study of 87 nearby Seyfert galaxies using the Spitzer Space Telescope and ground-based telescopes. Combining detailed modelling of the 3 - 100 micron spectral energy distributions with mid-IR spectral diagnostics and near-infrared observations, we find broad support for the unified model of AGNs. The IR emission of Seyfert 1s and 2s is consistent with their having the same type of central engine viewed at a different orientation. The nature of the puta…
We present infrared L-band (3-4 micron) nuclear spectra of a large sample of nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs).ULIRGs classified optically as non-Seyferts (LINERs, HII-regions, and unclassified) are our main targets. Using the 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission and absorption features at 3.1 micron due to ice-covered dust and at 3.4 micron produced by bare carbonaceous dust, we search for signatures of powerful active galactic nuclei (AGNs) deeply buried along virtually all lines-of-sight. The 3.3 micron PAH emission, the signatures of starbursts, is detect…
We have compared the morphological characteristics of the 891 galaxies in the Extended 12-micron Sample (E12GS), and assessed the effect of the 12-micron selection criterion on galaxy properties. The normal spirals in the E12GS have the same axial ratios, morphological types, and bar and ring fractions as other normal spirals. The HII/starburst galaxies have a higher incidence of bars, and more than twice the normal rate of "peculiar" morphologies, both of which are attributable to relatively recent disturbances. The galaxies with active nuclei (AGNs: Seyferts and LINERs) have the same inciden…
In this letter we present clear evidence that Mrk 573 is an obscured Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) and not an archetypal Seyfert 2, as it has been classified until now. Only three galaxies have been proposed as members of this class, prior to this work. Here we report near-infrared spectroscopic data taken with LIRIS on the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (WHT). Our high quality near-infrared nuclear spectrum in the 0.88-1.35 micron wavelength range shows the permitted O I 1.128,1.317 micron narrow lines, the Fe II 9200-Ålines and the Fe II 1-micron lines, together with a relatively broad com…
This letter presents incontrovertible evidence that NGC5506 is a Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1). Our new 0.9-1.4 micron spectrum of its nucleus clearly shows the permitted OI 1.1287 micron line (with full width at half maximum <2000 km/s) and the `1 micron FeII lines'. These lines can only originate in the optically-thick broad line region (BLR) and, among Seyfert nuclei the latter series of lines are seen only in NLSy1s. The obscuration to the BLR, derived from a rough estimate of the OI 1.1287 micron / OI 8446 Angstrom ratio and from the reddening of the near-IR Paschen lines, is A_v > 5. Tog…
We report the results of 20, 6, and 2 cm VLA and 1.5 cm OVRO observations of the optically-selected CfA Seyfert galaxies and the bolometric-flux-limited 12-Micron active galaxy sample. Every object observed was detected at 6 cm. Only 6-8% of the 12um sample Seyferts (3-4 objects) are radio-loud (and none of the CfA sample), as compared to 15-20% for the BQS quasars. These radio-loud objects are compact and have flat spectra, distinguishing them from the more common radio-quiet objects. The 6-20 cm slopes of the Seyfert 1s and 2s are similar, with average values of about -0.7. Although several …
We present new spectroscopic observations of the 3.4 micron absorption feature in the Seyfert galaxies, NGC1068 and NGC7674, and the ultraluminous infrared galaxy, IRAS08572+3915. A signature of C-H bonds in aliphatic hydrocarbons, the 3.4 micron feature indicates the presence of organic material in Galactic and extragalactic dust. Here we compare the 3.4 micron feature in all the galaxies in which it has been detected. In several cases, the signal-to-noise ratio and spectral resolution permit a detailed examination of the feature profile, something which has rarely been attempted in extragala…
Mid-infrared images of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279 obtained with the ISO satellite are presented together with the results of a one-year monitoring campaign of the 2.5-11.7 micron spectrum. Contemporaneous optical photometric and spectrophotometric observations are also presented. The galaxy appears as a point-like source at the resolution of the ISOCAM instrument, 4-5". The 2.5-11.7 micron average spectrum of the nucleus in Mrk 279 shows a strong power law continuum with a spectral index alpha = -0.80+/-0.05 and weak PAH emission features. The Mrk 279 spectral energy distribution shows a mid…
We present a Monte-Carlo technique to probe the cosmic Infrared background radiation (CIB) with faint source confusion in deep, wide-field 4 micron images. We report a detection of surface brightness fluctuations using an ensemble of 5000 pixels. The brightness fluctuations do not show correlated structure and appear to be dominated by galaxies. We estimate a lower limit (95% C.L.) on CIB by modeling the number-count behavior of contributing sources to the detected fluctuations.
This paper is the second in a series, studying the optical properties of a sample of mid-IR Warm Seyfert galaxies and a control sample of mid-IR Cold galaxies. The present paper is devoted to aperture photometry. We discuss nuclear (within the central 2 kpc) and disk optical properties and their correlations with IR properties. We find a transition in the observed optical and IR properties from the Cold to the Warm Seyfert 2 and Seyfert 1 samples, with a partial overlap between the first two. This is in the sense of: (i) increasing nuclear optical luminosities and bluer nuclear colours (ii) de…
We propose two statistical tests to investigate how we see the nuclear region (r < 0.1 pc) of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). 1) The high-ionization nuclear emission-line region (HINER) test: Seyfert 1 galaxies (S1s) have systematically higher flux ratios of [Fe VII] lambda 6087 to [O III] lambda 5007 than Seyfert 2 galaxies (S2s). This is interpreted in that a significant part of the [Fe VII] lambda 6087 emission arises from the inner walls of dusty tori that cannot be seen in S2s (Murayama & Taniguchi 1998a,b). 2) The mid-infrared test: S1s have systematically higher flux ratios of t…
We use the CO band at 2.3 micron to constrain the populations of young stars in the central regions of Seyfert galaxies. We report new CO band spectroscopy of 46 Seyfert galaxies. In most cases, the observed CO indices appear diluted by the presence of a non-stellar component (most likely, warm dust surrounding the active nucleus). We used JHKL aperture photometry to estimate the non-stellar contribution at 2.3 micron. We successfully corrected the CO band for the dilution for 16 galaxies which were not dominated by the non-stellar component. Comparing with CO indices measured in elliptical an…
JHKL'M (1-5 micron) imaging of a sample of Seyfert (Sy) 2 galaxies is presented. We confirm that the 1-2.2 micron nuclear continuum of some Sy 2s is dominated by stellar emission, whereas the continuum emission at longer wavelengths (3-5 micron) is almost entirely non-stellar in origin. The IR non-stellar spectral energy distributions (SED) (up to 15 micron) of Sy galaxies show a variety of shapes, and they are well reproduced with the tapered disk models of Efstathiou & Rowan-Robinson (1995). We have used two models, one including an optically thin cone component and a coneless model. Althoug…
We obtained 0.8-2.4 micron spectra at a resolution of 320 km/s of four narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies in order to study the near-infrared properties of these objects. We focus on the analysis of the FeII emission in that region and the kinematics of the low-ionization broad lines. We found that the 1 micron FeII lines (9997 A, 10501 A, 10863 A and 11126 A) are the strongest FeII lines in the observed interval. For the first time, primary cascade lines of FeII arising from the decay of upper levels pumped by Ly-alpha fluorescence are resolved and identified in active galactic nuclei. Excitation…
Images at 12.5 microns of nuclei of three nearby Seyfert galaxies -- NGC 1275, NGC 4151 and NGC 7469 -- have been obtained with the Keck 10-m Telescope. NGC 7469 is resolved and deconvolution delineates a structure <0.04"x0.08" or <13x26 pc at a position angle of 135deg. From a comparison with structure seen at millimeter wavelengths, this structure is interpreted as a disk aligned with the molecular gas in the central few hundred parsecs of the galaxy. NGC 1275 and NGC 4151 are not resolved; limits on the sizes of these nuclei are 0.08" and 0.16", corresponding to physical spatial scales of 2…
We present the results of infrared 2.8-4.1 micron (L-band) spectroscopy of nearby infrared luminous galaxies with possible signatures of dust-obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in data at other wavelengths. The samples are chosen to include sources with a radio excess relative to far-infrared emission, strong absorption features in mid-infrared 5-11.5 micron spectra, unusually weak [CII] 158 micron emission relative to the far-infrared continuum, and radio galaxies classified optically as narrow-line objects. Our aim is to investigate whether the signatures of possible obscured AGNs can be…
Aims: We present a near-infrared spectral atlas of 47 active galactic nuclei (AGN), of all degrees of activity, in the wavelength interval of 0.8-2.4 microns, including the fluxes of the observed emission lines. We analyze the spectroscopic properties of the continuum and emission line spectra of the sources Methods: In order to exclude aperture and seeing effects we use near-infrared spectroscopy in the short cross-dispersed mode (SXD, 0.8-2.4 microns), taking the JHK-bands spectra simultaneously. Results: We present the most extensive NIR spectral atlas of AGN to date. This atlas offers a su…
By observing the near-infrared spectrum of the quasar PG 1116+215 at z = 0.176 and combining with the HST/FOS spectrum, we obtained the relative strengths of three permitted OI lines ({lambda}1304, {lambda}8446, and {lambda}11287) in a quasar for the first time. The photon flux ratios of the OI lines of the quasar were compared with those previously measured in a Seyfert 1 and six narrow-line Seyfert 1s. No significant differences were found in the OI line flux ratios between the quasar and the other Seyferts, suggesting that the gas density in the OI and FeII line-emitting regions in the quas…
We have selected an all--sky sample of 893 galaxies from the IRAS FSC--2, defined by a total (ADDSCAN) 12um flux limit of 0.22~Jy. Completeness is verified to 0.30~Jy, below which we have quantified the incompleteness down to 0.22~Jy for our statistical analysis. ¶The Seyfert subsample is the largest unbiased sample of (118) Seyfert galaxies ever assembled and is complete not only to 0.30~Jy at 12um, but also with respect to a bolometric flux limit of $\sim2.0\times10^{-10}$~(cgs). The average $V/V_{max}$ for the full sample, corrected for incompleteness at low fluxes, is $0.51\pm0.04$, while …
We propose a new empirical method to estimate the total far-infrared flux of galaxies from the spectral energy distribution (SED) at wavelengths lambda shorter than 100 microns. It is difficult to derive the total far-infrared luminosity from only the IRAS data, though it is one of the most important properties of galaxies. Observations by Infrared Telescope in Space (IRTS) indicate that the SED of the diffuse emission from the Galactic plane in this wavelength region can be derived from the 60 microns to 100 microns color. This empirical SED relation was improved in order to obtain a better f…
Recently, a relationship between the water maser detection rate and far infrared (FIR) flux density has been found as a result of a 22 GHz maser survey in a sample comprised of northern galaxies with 100 micron flux density > 50 Jy and a declination >-30 degrees. The survey has been extended toward galaxies with lower FIR flux densities in order to confirm this correlation and to discover additional maser sources for relevant follow-up interferometric studies. A sample of 41 galaxies with 30 Jy < S(100 micron) < 50 Jy and Dec. > -30 degrees was observed with the 100-m telescope at Effelsberg i…
L'-band (lambda=3.8 microns) and M'-band (lambda=4.8 microns) observations of the Galactic Center region, performed in 2003 at VLT (ESO) with the adaptive optics imager NACO, have lead to the detection of an infrared counterpart of the radio source Sgr A* at both wavelengths. The measured fluxes confirm that the Sgr A* infrared spectrum is dominated by the synchrotron emission of nonthermal electrons. The infrared counterpart exhibits no significant short term variability but demonstrates flux variations on daily and yearly scales. The observed emission arises away from the position of the dyn…
We have observed the Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxy He 2-10 in the 10 microns mid-infrared (MIR) atmospheric window using broad-band filters centered at lambda=10.1 microns and lambda=11.65 microns. In both filters, only the galaxy's central regions were detected. One of the UV emitting regions is not detected, implying an older age. The central region contains two resolved components which have the same MIR properties but different Halpha fluxes. We interpret these properties in terms of differing star forming histories. Based on its morphology, we show that the MIR emission is unambiguously…
The complete mid- to far- infrared continuum energy distribution collected with the Infrared Space Observatory of the Seyfert 2 prototype NGC 5252 is presented. ISOCAM images taken in the 3--15 micron range show a resolved central source that is consistent at all bands with a region of about 1.3 kpc in size. Due to the lack of on going star formation in the disk of the galaxy, this resolved emission is associated with either dust heated in the nuclear active region or with bremsstrahlung emission from the nuclear and extended ionised gas. The size of the mid-IR emission contrasts with the stan…
We investigated the correlation between nuclear/circumnuclear starbursts around the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and the AGN activities for 43 Seyfert galaxies in the CfA and 12 micron samples. We found that circumnuclear starburst luminosity as well as nuclear starburst luminosity are positively correlated with AGN luminosity. Moreover, nuclear starburst luminosity is more strongly correlated with the AGN luminosity normalized with AGN Eddington luminosity than is circumnuclear starburst luminosity. This implies that starbursts nearer the AGN could have a greater effect on AGN mass accretion…
We use a recent near-infrared imaging survey of samples of Seyfert and normal galaxies to study the role of bars in the fueling of nuclear activity. The active galaxy sample includes Seyfert galaxies in the Revised Shapely-Ames (RSA) and Sandage & Tammann's (1987) extension to this catalog. The normal galaxies were selected to match the Seyfert sample in Hubble type, redshift, inclination and blue luminosity. All the galaxies in both samples classified as barred in the RSA catalog are also barred in the near-infrared. In addition, ~55% of the galaxies classified as non-barred in the RSA show e…
We present mid-infrared data of a sample of 57 AGNs obtained with the instrument ISOCAM on board the satellite ISO. The images were obtained through the LW2 (6.75 microns) and LW7 (9.62 microns) filters. This is a new analysis of Clavel et al. (2000) galaxy sample, which is divided into 26 type 1 (< or = 1.5) and 28 type 2 (> 1.5) Seyfert galaxies, plus three QSOs. The spatial resolution of the images allow us to separate the nuclear and the extended contributions to the total emission after decomposing the brightness profiles into different morphological components. The most common components…
Based on the analysis of a large spectropolarimetric survey of Seyfert 2 galaxies (S2s) from the CfA and 12-micron samples conducted mostly at Lick and Palomar Observatories, it is shown that S2s with hidden BLR (HBLRs) are intrinsically more powerful than non-HBLR S2s. The positive detection of BLR in HBLR S2s appears to be due largely to the intrinsic strength of the hidden AGN nucleus rather than the lower level of nuclear obscuration or reduced dominance of circumnuclear starburst. The HBLR S2s, on average, share many similar large-scale characteristics with Seyfert 1 galaxies (S1s), as wo…
We have discovered a bow shock shaped mid-infrared excess region in front of delta Velorum using 24 micron observations obtained with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). The excess has been classified as a debris disk from previous infrared observations. Although the bow shock morphology was only detected in the 24 micron observations, its excess was also resolved at 70 micron. We show that the stellar heating of an ambient interstellar medium (ISM) cloud can produce the measured flux. Since delta Velorum was classified as a debris disk star previously, our discovery may call …
Multi-frequency observations of Mrk 348 are presented consisting of 2 epochs of MERLIN data at 5 GHz, ISOPHOT data at 170, 90, 60 and 25 micron, NOT images at U, B, R and I bands and data at 1350 micron from the archive for SCUBA. The new optical images reveal a disrupted arm that ends towards the eastern companion of Mrk 348, consistent with the hypothesis that Mrk 348 and its companion form an interacting system. 5 GHz MERLIN imaging shows that only one of the radio components of Mrk 348 is polarized (%P=5). The broadband spectrum of Mrk 348 is flat between the radio and millimetre bands, su…
A sample of 196 AGNs and ULIRGs observed by the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on Spitzer is analyzed to study the distribution of the strength of the 9.7 micron silicate feature. Average spectra are derived for quasars, Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 AGNs, and ULIRGs. We find that quasars are characterized by silicate features in emission and Seyfert 1s equally by emission or weak absorption. Seyfert 2s are dominated by weak silicate absorption, and ULIRGs are characterized by strong silicate absorption (mean apparent optical depth about 1.5). Luminosity distributions show that luminosities at rest fra…
We report on a three-year program of coordinated X-ray and optical monitoring of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051. The rapid continuum variations observed in the X-ray spectra are not detected in the optical, although the X-ray and optical continuum fluxes are correlated on time scales of many weeks and longer. Variations in the flux of the broad H-beta line are found to lag behind the optical continuum variations by approximately 6 days (with an uncertainty of 2-3 days), and combining this with the line width yields a virial mass estimate of about 1.1e6 solar masses, at the very low …
We determine and tabulate A(lambda)/A(K), the wavelength dependence of interstellar extinction, in the Galactic plane for 1.25um<lambda<8.0um along two lines of sight: l~42 and l~284. The first is a relatively quiescent and unremarkable region; the second contains the giant HII region RCW 49 as well as a ``field'' region unrelated to the cluster and nebulosity. Areas near these Galactic longitudes were imaged at J, H, and K bands by 2MASS and at 3--8um by Spitzer for the GLIMPSE Legacy program. We measure the mean values of the color excess ratios (A(lambda)-A(K))/(A(J)-A(K)) directly from the…
We report on the results of systematic infrared 2.5-5 micron spectroscopy of 45 nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z < 0.3 using IRC onboard the AKARI satellite. This paper investigates whether the luminosities of these ULIRGs are dominated by starburst activity, or optically elusive buried AGNs are energetically important. Our criteria include the strengths of the 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features and the optical depths of absorption features at 3.1 micron due to ice-covered dust grains and at 3.4 micron from bare carbonaceous dust grains. Beca…
We examine far-infrared and submillimeter spectral energy distributions for galaxies in the Infrared Space Observatory Atlas of Bright Spiral Galaxies. For the 71 galaxies where we had complete 60-180 micron data, we fit blackbodies with lambda^-1 emissivities and average temperatures of 31 K or lambda^-2 emissivities and average temperatures of 22 K. Except for high temperatures determined in some early-type galaxies, the temperatures show no dependence on any galaxy characteristic. For the 60-850 micron range in eight galaxies, we fit blackbodies with lambda^-1, lambda-2, and lambda^-beta (w…
We examine the 10\m\ emission of the central regions of 281 spiral galaxies, after having compiled all ground-based, small-aperture ($\sim$5") broad-band photometric observations at ł$\sim$10\m\ (N magnitudes) published in the literature. We evaluate the compactness of the $\sim$10\m\ emission of galaxy nuclei by comparing these small-beam measures with the large-beam IRAS 12\m\ fluxes. In the analysis of different subsets of objects, we apply survival analysis techniques in order to exploit the information contained in ``censored'' data (i.e., upper limits on the fluxes). Seyferts are found t…
Very high energy gamma-ray data obtained by CAT and HEGRA from active galactic nucleus Mkn 501 are used to constrain the cosmic Mid-Infrared background. While the entire infrared and submillimeter spectrum shape based on models has been fixed and the density scaled as a whole in previous studies, recent measures on the low and high energy infrared background are extensively used in this paper. In this original approach, the infrared distribution is only varied in the unexplored 3.5-100 microns region. With conservative hypothesis on the intrinsic spectra of Mkn 501, an upper limit of 4.7 nW.m-…
We present near-infrared 1.5 - 2.5 micron moderate resolution long-slit spectra of two Seyfert 1 galaxies (NGC 1097 and NGC 1566), three Seyfert 2s (NGC 1386, NGC 4945 and NGC 5128) and one Seyfert 1.5 (NGC 3227), both parallel to ionization cone or jet and perpendicular to it. The spectra are used to study the spatial extent of the line emission, integrated masses of excited H2 and the excitation mechanisms of interstellar gas. Broad BrGgamma originating from the BLR is detected in three galaxies (NGC 1386, NGC 1566 and NGC 3227), of which NGC 1386 is optically classified as Seyfert 2. In the…
We present sub-arcsec near-infrared 1.5 - 2.5 micron moderate resolution long-slit spectra of eight nearby Seyfert galaxies (z<0.01), both parallel to the ionization cone and perpendicular to it. These spectra complement similar data on six Seyferts, presented in Reunanen, Kotilainen & Prieto (2002). Large concentrations of molecular gas (H2) are present in the nucleus regardless of the Seyfert type. The spatial extent of the H2 emission is larger perpendicular to the cone than parallel to it in 6/8 (75 %) galaxies, in agreement with the unified models of Active Galactic Nuclei. Broad BrGamma …
We present a preliminary analysis of the first high-resolution X-ray spectrum of a Seyfert 2 galaxy, Mkn 3, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The high-energy spectrum (lambda < 4 Ang) is dominated by reflection of the AGN continuum radiation in a cold optically thick medium and contains bright K-alpha fluorescent lines from iron and silicon, as well as weak, blended lines from sulfur and magnesium. The soft X-ray emission (4 < lambda < 23 Ang) is spatially extended along the [O III] ionization cone and shows discrete signatur…
We present here new experimental results on high contrast imaging of 10^{-7} at 4.5Lambda/D (Lambda = 0.820 microns) by combining a circular focal plane mask (coronagraph) of 2.5Lambda/D diameter and a multi-Gaussian pupil plane mask. Both the masks were fabricated on very high surface quality (Lambda/30) BK7 optical substrates using nano-fabrication techniques of photolithography and metal lift-off. This process ensured that the shaped masks have a useable edge roughness better than Lambda/4 (rms error better than 0.2 microns), a specification that is necessary to realize the predicted theore…
We present the results of IRS low-resolution spectroscopy of 51 Seyfert galaxies, part of a large Spitzer observing program to determine the mid-to-far infrared spectral energy distributions of a well-defined sample of 87 nearby, 12 micron-selected Seyferts. We find that the spectra clearly divide into groups based on their continuum shapes and spectral features. The infrared spectral types appear to be related to the Seyfert types. Some features are clearly related to a starburst contribution to the IR spectrum, while the observed power-law continuum shapes, attributed to the AGN, may be dust…
We present an X-ray spectral analysis of a sample of 8 bona-fide Seyfert 2 galaxies, selected on the basis of their high $[OIII]\lambda5007$ flux, from the Ho et al. (1997) spectroscopic sample of nearby galaxies. We find that, in general, the X-ray spectra of our Seyfert 2 galaxies are complex, with some our objects having spectra different from the 'typical' spectrum of X-ray selected Seyfert 2 galaxies. Two (NGC3147 and NGC4698) show no evidence for intrinsic absorption. We suggest this is due to the fact that when the torus suppresses the intrinsic medium and hard energy flux, underlying e…
We present a survey of 72 Seyfert galaxies and quasars observed by the it Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). We have determined that 72 of 253 available active galactic nuclei (AGN) targets are viable targets for detection of intrinsic absorption lines. We examined these spectra for signs of intrinsic absorption in the O VI doublet (lambda 1031.9, 1037.6) and Lyman beta (lambda 1025.7). The fraction of Seyfert 1 galaxies and low-redshift quasars at z < 0.15 that show evidence of intrinsic UV absorption is ~50%, which is slightly lower than Crenshaw et al. (1999) found (60%) based o…
We present the results of Spitzer IRS low-resolution infrared 5-35 micron spectroscopy of nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z < 0.15. We focus on the search for the signatures of buried active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the complete sample of ULIRGs classified optically as non-Seyferts (LINERs or HII-regions). In addition to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features at 6.2 micron, 7.7 micron, and 11.3 micron, the conventional tool of starburst-AGN separation, we use the optical depths of the 9.7 micron and 18 micron silicate dust absorption features to infer the g…
We present 350 micron photometry of all 17 galaxy candidates in the Lockman Hole detected in a 1.1 mm Bolocam survey. Several of the galaxies were previously detected at 850 microns, at 1.2 mm, in the infrared by Spitzer, and in the radio. Nine of the Bolocam galaxy candidates were detected at 350 microns and two new candidates were serendipitously detected at 350 microns (bringing the total in the literature detected in this way to three). Five of the galaxies have published spectroscopic redshifts, enabling investigation of the implied temperature ranges and a comparison of photometric redsh…
We use a large, heterogeneous sample of local active galactic nuclei (AGN) that includes Seyfert 1s, Seyfert 2s and PG quasars to investigate for the first time the relation between black hole mass (M_BH) and mid-infrared nuclear emission. We find a clear relation between M_BH and the 10 micron nuclear luminosity for these local AGNs. There are no significant differences between type 1 and type 2 objects, implying that the reprocessing of the 10 micron nuclear emission is not severely affected by geometric and optical depth effects. We also confirm that M_BH is related to the 2-10keV X-ray lum…
