We present Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared spectra of 12 Seyfert 1.8 and 1.9 galaxies over the 5-38 um region. We compare the spectral characteristics of this sample to those of 58 Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies from the Spitzer archives. An analysis of the spectral shapes, the silicate 10 um feature and the emission line fluxes have enabled us to characterize the mid-IR properties of Seyfert 1.8/1.9s. We find that the equivalent widths of the 10 um silicate feature are generally weak in all Seyfert galaxies, as previously reported by several studies. The few Seyfert galaxies in this sample that show deep 10 um silicate absorption features are highly inclined and/or merging galaxies. It is likely that these absorption features originate primarily in the dusty interstellar medium of the host galaxy rather than in a dusty torus on parsec scales close to the central engine. We find that the equivalent width of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) band at 6.2 um correlates strongly with the 20-30 um spectral index. Either of these quantities are good indicators of the amount of starburst contribution to the mid-IR spectra. The spectra of Seyfert 1.8 and 1.9s are dominated by these starburst features, similar to most Seyfert 2s. They show strong PAH bands and a strong red continuum toward 30 um. The strengths of the high-ionization forbidden narrow emission lines [O IV] 25.89 um, [Ne III] 15.56 um and [Ne V] 14.32 um relative to [Ne II] 12.81 um are weaker in Seyfert 1.8/1.9s and Seyfert 2s as compared to Seyfert 1s. The weakness of high-ionization lines in Seyfert 1.8-1.9s is suggestive of intrinsically weak active galactic nuclei (AGN) continua, and/or stronger star formation activity leading to enhanced [Ne II]. We discuss the implications of these observational results in the context of the Unified Model of AGN.
We present results of our program Spitzer/IRS Mapping of local Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs). The maps cover the central 20"x20" or 30"x 30" regions of the galaxies, and use all four IRS modules to cover the full 5-38 microns spectral range. We have built spectral maps of the main mid-IR emission lines, continuum and PAH features, and extracted 1D spectra for regions of interest in each galaxy. The final goal is to fully characterize the mid-IR properties of local LIRGs as a first step to understanding their more distant counterparts.
We present mid-infrared Spitzer-IRS spectroscopy of the prototype WN star EZ CMa (HD50896, WN4b). Numerous stellar wind lines of HeII are revealed, plus fine-structure lines of [NeIII] 15.5um and [OIV] 25.9um. We carry out a spectroscopic analysis of HD50896 allowing for line blanketing and clumping, which is compared to the mid-IR observations. We make use of these stellar properties to accurately derive Ne/He=1.2-1.8E-4 and O/He=4.2-4.8E-5 by number, for the first time in an early WN star. In addition, we obtain N/C=40 and N/O=50 by number, values in perfect agreement with current prediction…
We have produced an atlas of Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) spectra of mass-losing, evolved stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. These stars were selected to have high mass-loss rates and so contribute significantly to the return of processed materials to the ISM. Our high-quality spectra enable the determination of the chemistry of the circumstellar envelope from the mid-IR spectral features and continuum. We have classified the spectral types of the stars and show that the spectral types separate clearly in infrared color-color diagrams constructed from 2MASS data and synthetic IRAC/MIP…
We present an analysis of the 5-8 micron Spitzer-IRS spectra of a sample of 68 local Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). Our diagnostic technique allows a clear separation of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and starburst (SB) components in the observed mid-IR emission, and a simple analytic model provides a quantitative estimate of the AGN/starburst contribution to the bolometric luminosity. We show that AGNs are ~30 times brighter at 6 micron than starbursts with the same bolometric luminosity, so that even faint AGNs can be detected. Star formation events are confirmed as the dominan…
We present observations of the starburst galaxy NGC 7714 with the Infrared Spectrograph IRS on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra yield a wealth of ionic and molecular features that allow a detailed characterization of its properties. NGC 7714 has an HII region-like spectrum with strong PAH emission features. We find no evidence for an obscured active galactic nucleus, and with [NeIII]/[NeII]~0.73, NGC7714 lies near the upper end of normal-metallicity starburst galaxies. With very little slicate absorption and a temperature of the hottest dust component of 340K, NGC 7714 is the per…
The Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) is one of three science instruments on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The IRS comprises four separate spectrograph modules covering the wavelength range from 5.3 to 38micron with spectral resolutions, R \~90 and 600, and it was optimized to take full advantage of the very low background in the space environment. The IRS is performing at or better than the pre-launch predictions. An autonomous target acquisition capability enables the IRS to locate the mid-infrared centroid of a source, providing the information so that the spacecraft can accurately offset that cen…
We present the first rest-frame ~4 micron detection of a Lyman break galaxy. The data were obtained using the 16 micron imaging capability of the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph. The target object, J134026.44+634433.2, is an extremely luminous Lyman break galaxy at z=2.79 first identified in Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra (Bentz, Osmer, & Weinberg 2004). The source is strongly detected with a flux of 0.94 +/- 0.02 mJy. Combining Spitzer and SDSS photometry with supporting ground-based J- and K-band data, we show that the spectral energy distribution is consistent with an actively star-forming …
We present Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph spectra of 28 Class I protostars in the Taurus star-forming region. The 5 to 36 micron spectra reveal excess emission from the inner regions of the envelope and accretion disk surrounding these predecessors of low-mass stars, as well as absorption features due to silicates and ices. Together with shorter- and longer-wavelength data from the literature, we construct spectral energy distributions and fit envelope models to 22 protostars of our sample, most of which are well-constrained due to the availability of the IRS spectra. We infer that the envelope…
We report on neon abundances derived from {\it Spitzer} high resolution spectral data of eight Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars using the forbidden line of [\ion{Ne}{3}] 15.56 microns. Our targets include four WN stars of subtypes 4--7, and four WC stars of subtypes 4--7. We derive ion fraction abundances $γ$ of Ne^{2+} for the winds of each star. The ion fraction abundance is a product of the ionization fraction $Q_{\rm i}$ in stage i and the abundance by number ${\cal A}_E$ of element E relative to all nuclei. Values generally consistent with solar are obtained for the WN stars, and values in excess of…
The Spitzer high resolution spectra of 72 Seyfert galaxies from the 12$μ$m Galaxy Sample are presented and discussed. The presence of starburst components in these galaxies can be quantified by powerful mid-IR diagnostics tools (i.e. 11.25$μ$m PAH feature equivalent width and the H$_2$ emission line intensity), as well as the AGN dominance can be measured by specific fine structure line ratios (e.g. [NeV]/[NeII], [NeV]/[SiII], etc.). The two types of Seyfert galaxies do not show any statistical difference in our diagnostic tools. However, the Seyfert 2's showing hidden Broad Line Regions in sp…
We present Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) observations of eleven intermediate polars (IPs). Spectra covering the wavelength range from 5.2 to 14 $μ$m are presented for all eleven objects, and longer wavelength spectra are presented for three objects (AE Aqr, EX Hya, and V1223 Sgr). We also present new, moderate resolution (R $\sim$ 2000) near-infrared spectra for five of the program objects. We find that, in general, the mid-infrared spectra are consistent with simple power laws that extend from the optical into the mid-infrared. There is no evidence for discrete cyclotron emission featur…
We present 10 - 19 um moderate resolution spectra of ten M dwarfs, one L dwarf, and two T dwarf systems obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The IRS allows us to examine molecular spectroscopic features/lines at moderate spectral resolution in a heretofore untapped wavelength regime. These R~600 spectra allow for a more detailed examination of clouds, non-equilibrium chemistry, as well as the molecular features of H2O, NH3, and other trace molecular species that are the hallmarks of these objects. A cloud-free model best fits our mid-infrared spect…
We analyze {\it Spitzer} and Magellan observations of a star forming core near IRS-2 in the young cluster NGC 2264. The submillimeter source IRAS 12 S1, previously believed to be an intermediate mass Class 0 object is shown to be a dense collection of embedded, low mass stars. We argue that this group of stars represents the fragmenting collapse of a dense, turbulent core, based on a number of indicators of extreme youth. With reasonable estimates for the velocity dispersion in the group, we estimate a dynamical lifetime of only a few x 10$^{4}$ years. Spectral energy distributions of stars in…
Extragalactic sources from the IRAS Faint Source Catalog (FSC) which have the optically faintest magnitudes (E > 18) were selected by spatial coincidence with a source in the FIRST radio survey, and 28 of these sources have been observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer (IRS). While an infrared source is always detected with the IRS at the FIRST position, only ~ 50% of the infrared sources are real FSC detections, as estimated from the number of sources for which the fv(25um) determined with the IRS is fainter than the sensitivity limit for the FSC. Sources have 0.12 < z < 1.0 and lum…
We present 5-35 $μ$m spectra, taken with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope, of five FU Orionis objects: FU Ori, V1515 Cyg, V1057 Cyg, BBW 76, and V346 Nor. All but V346 Nor reveal amorphous silicate grains in emission at 10 $μ$m and 20 $μ$m, and show water-vapor absorption bands at 5.8 and 6.8 $μ$m and SiO or possibly methane absorption at 8 $μ$m. These absorption features closely match these bands in model stellar photospheres -- signs of the gaseous photospheres of the inner regions of these objects' accretion disks. The continuum emission at 5-8 $μ$m is also con…
We present a {\em Spitzer}-based mid-infrared study of a large sample of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCD) using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS), including the first mid-IR spectrum of IZw18, the archetype for the BCD class and among the most metal poor galaxies known. We show the spectra of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in low-metallicity environment. We find that the equivalent widths (EW) of PAHs at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6 and 11.2 $μ$m are generally weaker in BCDs than in typical starburst galaxies and that the fine structure line ratio, [NeIII]/[NeII], has a weak anti-correlation w…
We present an observation of the very late thermal pulse object V4334 Sgr (Sakurai's Object) with the Infrared Spectrometer (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The emission from 5-38 microns is dominated by the still-cooling dust shell. A number of features are seen in absorption against the dust shell, which we attribute to HCN and polyyne molecules. We use these features to determine the 12C/13C ratio for the absorbing gas to be ~ 3.2 (+3.2,-1.6}; this implies that, despite the H-content of the molecules, the hydrocarbon-bearing gas must have originated in material produced in the very lat…
With the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) we have observed seven powerful FR2 radio galaxies and seven quasars. Both samples, the galaxies and the quasars, are comparable in isotropic 178 MHz luminosity (10^26.5 W/Hz < P 178MHz < 10^29.5 W/Hz) and in redshift range (0.05 < z < 1.5). We find for both samples similar distributions in the luminosity ratios of high- to low-excitation lines ([NeV] 14.3 mu / [NeII] 12.8 mu) and of high-excitation line to radio power ([NeV] 24.3 μ/ P 178MHz). This solves the long debate about the apparent difference of quasars and radio galaxies in…
Spectra have been obtained with the low-resolution modules of the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer) for 58 sources having f$_ν$(24 micron) > 0.75 mJy. Sources were chosen from a survey of 8.2 deg$^{2}$ within the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey region in Bootes (NDWFS) using the Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Most sources are optically very faint (I > 24mag). Redshifts have previously been determined for 34 sources, based primarily on the presence of a deep 9.7 micron silicate absorption feature, with a median z of 2.2. Spectr…
We present our early results of the mapping of the nucleus of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 and its immediate surroundings using the Infrared Spectrograph onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The map is centered on the nucleus of the galaxy and spans the inner 800 x 688 pc2. The spatial distribution of the \neiii line at 15.55 microns and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons feature at 11.3 microns peaks at the center while the purely rotationnal transition of molecular hydrogen at 17.03 microns is strong over several slit positions. We perform a brief investigation of the implications of these…
We present a pilot study of 16 micron imaging within the GOODS northern field. Observations were obtained using the PeakUp imaging capability of the Spitzer IRS. We survey 35 square arcminutes to an average 3 sigma depth of 0.075 mJy and detect 149 sources. The survey partially overlaps the area imaged at 15 microns by ISO, and we demonstrate that our photometry and galaxy-number counts are consistent with their measurements. We infer the total infrared luminosity of 16 micron detections using a comparison to local templates and find a wide range of L_IR} from ~10^9 to 10^{12} L_sun. Approxima…
We present Spitzer/IRS observations of a small sample of heavily obscured IRAS sources displaying both the infrared and OH maser emission characteristic of OH/IR stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB), but also radio continuum emission typical of ionized planetary nebulae (PNe), the so-called OHPNe. Our observations show that their mid-infrared spectra are dominated by the simultaneous presence of strong and broad amorphous silicate absorption features together with crystalline silicate features, originated in their O-rich circumstellar shells. Out of the five sources observed, three of th…
We are conducting a large observing program with the Spitzer Space Telescope to determine the mid-to-far infrared spectral energy distributions of a well-defined sample of 87 nearby, 12 micron-selected Seyfert galaxies. In this paper we present the results of IRS low-resolution spectroscopy of a statistically representative subsample of 51 of the galaxies (59%), with an analysis of the continuum shapes and a comparison of the Seyfert types. We find that the spectra clearly divide into groups based on their continuum shapes and spectral features. Some spectral features are clearly related to a …
We have obtained high S/N Spitzer IRS spectra of 17 Virgo early-type galaxies that lie on the colour-magnitude relation of passively evolving galaxies in the cluster. To flux calibrate these extended sources we have devised a new procedure that allows us to obtain the intrinsic spectral energy distribution and to disentangle resolved and unresolved emission within the same object. Thirteen objects of the sample (76%) show a pronounced broad silicate feature (above 10micron) which is spatially extended and likely of stellar origin, in agreement with model predictions. The other 4 objects (24%) …
We present Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the "evolved starless core" L1521F which reveal the presence of a very low luminosity object (L < 0.07 Lsun). The object, L1521F-IRS, is directly detected at mid-infrared wavelengths (>5 micron) but only in scattered light at shorter infrared wavelengths, showing a bipolar nebula oriented east-west which is probably tracing an outflow cavity. The nebula strongly suggests that L1521F-IRS is embedded in the L1521F core. Thus L1521F-IRS is similar to the recently discovered L1014-IRS and the previously known IRAM 04191 in its substellar luminosit…
Published mid infrared spectra of transiting planets HD 209458b and HD 189733b, obtained during secondary eclipse by the InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, are predominantly featureless. In particular these flux ratio spectra do not exhibit an expected feature arising from water vapor absorption short-ward of 10 um. Here we suggest that, in the absence of flux variability, the spectral data for HD 189733b are inconsistent with 8 um-photometry obtained with Spitzer's InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC), perhaps an indication of problems with the challenging reduction of th…
We present the mid-infrared spectrum of the planetary nebula IC 2448. In order to determine the chemical composition of the nebula, we use the infrared line fluxes from the Spitzer spectrum along with optical line fluxes from the literature and ultraviolet line fluxes from archival IUE spectra. We determine an extinction of C(H-beta) = 0.27 from hydrogen recombination lines and the radio to H-beta ratio. Forbidden line ratios give an electron density of 1860 cm-3 and an average electron temperature of 12700 K. The use of infrared lines allows us to determine more accurate abundances than previ…
We describe state-of-the-art MARCS-code model atmospheres generated for a group of A dwarf, G dwarf, and late-G to mid-K giant standard stars, selected to photometrically calibrate the Spitzer-IRS, and compare the synthetic spectra to observations of HR 6688, HR 6705, and HR 7891. The general calibration processes and uncertainties are briefly described, and the differences between various templated composite spectra of the standards are addressed. In particular, a contrast between up-to-date model atmospheres and previously published composite and synthetic spectra is illustrated for waveleng…
We present an atlas of Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) spectra of highly luminous, compact mid-infrared sources in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Sources were selected on the basis of infrared colors and 8 micron (MSX) fluxes indicative of highly evolved, intermediate- to high-mass stars with current or recent mass loss at large rates. We determine the chemistry of the circumstellar envelope from the mid-IR continuum and spectral features and classify the spectral types of the stars. In the sample of 60 sources, we find 21 Red Supergiants (RSGs), 16 C-rich Asymptotic Giant Bra…
This paper reports the discovery of a Very Low Luminosity Object (VeLLO) in the "starless" dense core L328, using the Spitzer Space Telescope and ground based observations from near-infrared to millimeter wavelengths. The Spitzer 8 micron image indicates that L328 consists of three subcores of which the smallest one may harbor a source, L328-IRS while two other subcores remain starless. L328-IRS is a Class 0 protostar according to its bolometric temperature (44 K) and the high fraction ~72 % of its luminosity emitted at sub-millimeter wavelengths. Its inferred "internal luminosity" (0.04 - 0.0…
The Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) has been used to obtain low and moderate resolution spectra of the dust and gas-rich quasar APM08279+5255 (z=3.91). Broad Paschen $α$ and $β$ recombination lines of hydrogen were detected at wavelengths of 9.235 and 6.315microns, as well as a strong, red continuum that is a smooth power law over the observed (rest frame) wavelength range 5.3-35microns (1.08 - 7.1microns). The observed P$α$/P$β$ line flux ratio of 1.05$\pm$0.2 is far from the case B value of ~2 and simple models of high density, high optical depth ionized…
We present broad band imaging observations obtained with the ``peak up'' imagers of the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) at wavelengths of 16micron and 22micron for a number of sources detected primarily at submillimeter wavelengths, which are believed to be at high, though undetermined, redshift. We targeted 11 sources originally detected by SCUBA and 5 submillimeter sources detected at 1.2mm by MAMBO. Two optically discovered quasars with z>6 were also observed to determine if there is detectable dust emission at such high redshifts. Seven of the submillimeter sources and …
We use 16 micron, Spitzer-IRS, blue peakup photometry of 50 early-type galaxies in the Coma cluster to define the mid-infrared colour-magnitude relation. We compare with recent simple stellar population models that include the mid-infrared emission from the extended, dusty envelopes of evolved stars. The Ks-[16] colour in these models is very sensitive to the relative population of dusty Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. We find that the passively evolving early-type galaxies define a sequence of approximately constant age (~10 Gyr) with varying metallicity. Several galaxies that lie on the…
We present the first mid-infrared spectra of SMP LMC 11 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. While this object resembles a planetary nebula in the optical, its infrared properties are more similar to an object in transition from the asymptotic giant branch to the planetary nebula phase. A warm dust continuum dominates the infrared spectrum. The peak emission corresponds to a mean dust temperature of 330 K. The spectrum shows overlapping molecular absorption bands from 12 to 17 um corresponding to acetylene and polyacetylenic chains and benzene. This is the first detection of C4H2, C6H2, C6H6 and oth…
Archival Spitzer observations of 41 starburst galaxies that span a wide range in metallicity reveal for the first time a correlation between the [FeII]/[NeII] 26.0/12.8 micron ratio and the electron gas density as traced by the 18.7/33.4 micron [SIII] ratio, with the [FeII]/[NeII] ratio decreasing with increasing gas density. We also find a strong correlation between the gas density and the PAH peak to continuum strength. Using shock and photoionization models, we see the driver of the observed [FeII]/[NeII] ratios is metallicity. The majority of [FeII] emission in low metallicity galaxies may…
The first high resolution Spitzer IRS 9-37um spectra of 29 Seyfert galaxies (about one quarter) of the 12um Active Galaxy Sample are presented and discussed. The high resolution spectroscopy was obtained with corresponding off-source observations. This allows excellent background subtraction, so that the continuum levels and strengths of weak emission lines are accurately measured. The result is several new combinations of emission line ratios, line/continuum and continuum/continuum ratios that turn out to be effective diagnostics of the strength of the AGN component in the IR emission of thes…
The study of the dominant population of high redshift IR-luminous galaxies (10^11 - 10^12 Lsun at 1<z<3), requires observation of sources at the ~0.1 mJy level in the mid-IR. We present the deepest spectra taken to date with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We targeted two faint (f24~0.15 mJy) sources in the Southern GOODS field at z=1.09 and z=2.69. Spectra of the lower redshift target were taken in the observed-frame 8--21 micron range, while the spectrum of the higher redshift target covered 21--37 microns. We also present the spectra of two secondary sources …
Using \emph{Spitzer} Infrared Spectrograph observations of G0--M4 III stars behind dark clouds, I construct $5-20μ$m empirical extinction curves for $0.3\leq A_K<7$, which is equivalent to $A_V$ between $\approx$ 3 and 50. For $A_K<1$ the curve appears similar to the \citet{mathis90} diffuse interstellar medium extinction curve, but with a greater degree of extinction. For $A_K>1$, the curve exhibits lower contrast between the silicate and absorption continuum, developes ice absorption, and lies closer to the \citet{wd01} $R_V=5.5$ case B curve, a result which is consistent with that of \citet…
We have obtained Spitzer Space Telescope IRS 5.5 - 35 micron spectra of 59 main sequence stars that possess IRAS 60 micron excess. The spectra of five objects possess spectral features that are well-modeled using micron-sized grains and silicates with crystalline mass fractions 0% - 80%, consistent with T-Tauri and Herbig AeBe stars. With the exception of eta Crv, these objects are young with ages <50 Myr. The spectra for the majority of objects are featureless, suggesting that the emitting grains probably have radii a > 10 micron. We have modeled the excess continua using a continuous disk wi…
We present the science database produced by the Formation and Evolution of Planetary Systems (FEPS) Spitzer Legacy program. Data reduction and validation procedures for the IRAC, MIPS, and IRS instruments are described in detail. We also derive stellar properties for the FEPS sample from available broad-band photometry and spectral types, and present an algorithm to normalize Kurucz synthetic spectra to optical and near-infrared photometry. The final FEPS data products include IRAC and MIPS photometry for each star in the FEPS sample and calibrated IRS spectra.
The correlations of the [FeII]/[NeII] ratio, the PAH peak to continuum strength & metallicity found in an earlier paper were confirmed for a larger sample. We also find a strong correlation between the gas density and the PAH peak to continuum strength. Using shock and ph…
We present the first MIR spectrum of the z=2.2856 ultraluminous, infrared galaxy FSC 10214+4724, obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectrum spans a rest wavelength range of 2.3-11.5 microns, covering a number of key diagnostic emission and absorption features. The most prominent feature in the IRS spectrum is the silicate emission at rest-frame 10 microns. We also detect an unresolved emission line at a rest wavelength of 7.65 microns which we identify with [NeVI], and a slightly resolved feature at 5.6 microns identified as a blend of [Mg VII] an…
Spectra have been obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope for 20 sources in the Lockman Hole field of the SWIRE survey. The sample is divided between sources with indicators of an obscured AGN, based primarily on X-ray detections of optically-faint sources, and sources with indicators of a starburst, based on optical and near-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) which show a luminosity peak from stellar photospheric emission. Ten of the 11 AGN sources have IRS spectra which show silicate absorption or are power laws; only one AGN source shows PAH e…
We present a low-resolution (R = 90), 5.5-38 micron spectral sequence of a sample of M, L, and T dwarfs obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra exhibit prominent absorption bands of H_2O at 6.27 microns, CH_4 at 7.65 microns, and NH_3 at 10.5 microns and are relatively featureless at lambda > 15 microns. Three spectral indices that measure the strengths of these bands are presented; H_2O absorption features are present throughout the MLT sequence while the CH_4 and NH_3 bands first appear at roughly the L/T transition. Although the spectra…
We present photometric and spectroscopic data of the interacting starburst galaxy NGC 6052 obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The mid-infrared (MIR) spectra of the three brightest spatially resolved regions in the galaxy are remarkably similar and are consistent with dust emission from young nearly coeval stellar populations. Analysis of the brightest infrared region of the system, which contributes ~18.5 % of the total 16\micron flux, indicates that unlike similar off-nuclear infrared-bright regions found in Arp 299 or NGC 4038/9, its MIR spectrum is inconsistent with an enshrouded ho…
We present mid-infrared spectra of T Tauri stars in the Taurus star-forming region obtained with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS). For the first time, the 5-36 micron spectra of a large sample of T Tauri stars belonging to the same star-forming region is studied, revealing details of the mid-infrared excess due to dust in circumstellar disks. We analyze common features and differences in the mid-IR spectra based on disk structure, dust grain properties, and the presence of companions. Our analysis encompasses spectral energy distributions from the optical to the far-infrared, a morpholo…
Sensitive 5-38 um Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) and ground based 3-5 um spectra of the embedded low mass protostars B5 IRS1 and HH46 IRS show deep ice absorption bands superposed on steeply rising mid-infrared continua. The ices likely originate in the circumstellar envelopes. The CO2 bending mode at 15 um is a particularly powerful tracer of the ice composition and processing history. Toward these protostars, this band shows little evidence for thermal processing at temperatures above 50 K. Signatures of lower temperature processing are present in the CO and OCN- bands, however. The observed …
Constraining the astrophysical nature of Ultra-Luminous X-ray (ULX) sources, which have X-ray luminosities exceeding 10^39 erg/s, has been elusive due to the optical faintness of any counterparts. With high spectral resolution observations in the ~10-30 microns wavelength range we have conducted an experiment to study six ULX sources in the NGC 4485/90 galaxy pair. We have found that five of the six ULXs, based on mid-infrared spectral diagnostics, show the characteristic higher ionization features that are found in AGN. The sixth source, ULX-1, is consistent with being a supernova remnant. Th…
Using the 16$μ$m peakup imager on the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on Spitzer, we present a serendipitous survey of 0.0392 deg$^{2}$ within the area of the NOAO Deep Wide Field Survey in Bootes. Combining our results with the available Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) 24$μ$m survey of this area, we produce a catalog of 150 16$μ$m sources brighter than 0.18 mJy (3$σ$) for which we derive measures or limits on the 16/24$μ$m colors. Such colors are especially useful in determining redshifts for sources whose mid infrared spectra contain strong emission or absorption features that ch…
We present high signal to noise ratio Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph observations of 17 Virgo early-type galaxies. The galaxies were selected from those that define the colour-magnitude relation of the cluster, with the aim of detecting the silicate emission of their dusty, mass-losing evolved stars. To flux calibrate these extended sources we have devised a new procedure that allows us to obtain the intrinsic spectral energy distribution and to disentangle resolved and unresolved emission within the same object. We have found that thirteen objects of the sample (76%) are passively evolving gal…
We present observations of Taurus-Auriga Class I/II protostars obtained with the Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph. Detailed spectral fits to the 6 and 15 micron features are made, using publicly-available laboratory data, to constrain the molecular composition, abundances, and levels of thermal processing along the lines of sight. We provide an inventory of the molecular environments observed, which have an average composition dominated by water ice with ~12% CO_2 (abundance relative to H_2O), >~2-9% CH_3OH, <~14% NH_3, ~4% CH_4, ~2% H_2CO, ~0.6% HCOOH, and ~0.5% SO_2. We find CO_2/H_2O ratios ne…
A sample of 196 AGNs and ULIRGs observed by the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on Spitzer is analyzed to study the distribution of the strength of the 9.7 micron silicate feature. Average spectra are derived for quasars, Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 AGNs, and ULIRGs. We find that quasars are characterized by silicate features in emission and Seyfert 1s equally by emission or weak absorption. Seyfert 2s are dominated by weak silicate absorption, and ULIRGs are characterized by strong silicate absorption (mean apparent optical depth about 1.5). Luminosity distributions show that luminosities at rest fra…
We present 5-38um mid-infrared spectra at a spectral resolution of R~65-130 of a large sample of 22 starburst nuclei taken with the Infrared Spectrograph IRS on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra show a vast range in starburst SEDs. The silicate absorption ranges from essentially no absorption to heavily obscured systems with an optical depth of tau(9.8um)~5. The spectral slopes can be used to discriminate between starburst and AGN powered sources. The monochromatic continuum fluxes at 15um and 30um enable a remarkably accurate estimate of the total infrared luminosity of the starb…
We present Spitzer IRS spectra (R ~600, 10 - 38 micron) of 38 positions in the Galactic Center (GC), all at the same Galactic longitude and spanning plus/minus 0.3 degrees in latitude. Our positions include the Arches Cluster, the Arched Filaments, regions near the Quintuplet Cluster, the ``Bubble'' lying along the same line-of-sight as the molecular cloud G0.11-0.11, and the diffuse interstellar gas along the line-of-sight at higher Galactic latitudes. From measurements of the [O IV], [Ne II], [Ne III], [Si II], [S III], [S IV], [Fe II], [Fe III], and H_2 S(0), S(1), and S(2) lines we determi…
Using SpeX at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility and the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph, we have obtained infrared spectra from 0.7 to 30um for three young brown dwarfs in the TW Hydra Association (~10 Myr), 2M J1207-3932, 2M J1139-3159, and SS J1102-3431. The spectral energy distribution for 2M J1139-3159 is consistent with a stellar photosphere for the entire wavelength range of our data while the other two objects exhibit significant excess emission at >5um. We are able to reproduce the excess emission from each brown dwarf using our models of irradiated accretion disks. According to our m…
We present the results of Spitzer IRS low-resolution infrared 5-35 micron spectroscopy of nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z < 0.15. We focus on the search for the signatures of buried active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the complete sample of ULIRGs classified optically as non-Seyferts (LINERs or HII-regions). In addition to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features at 6.2 micron, 7.7 micron, and 11.3 micron, the conventional tool of starburst-AGN separation, we use the optical depths of the 9.7 micron and 18 micron silicate dust absorption features to infer the g…
We present Spitzer observations of IC 443 obtained with MIPS and IRS as part of our GTO program on the astrophysics of ejecta from evolved stars. We find that the overall morphology at mid/far IR wavelengths resembles even more closely a loop or a shell than the ground based optical and/or near IR images. The dust temperature map, based on the 70/160micron ratio, shows a range from 18 to 30 K degrees. The IRS spectra confirm the findings from previous near+mid IR spectroscopic observations of a collisionally excited gas, atomic and molecular, rich in fine structure atomic and pure H2 rotational…
We present the first systematic investigation of the [NeV] (14um/24um) and [SIII] (18um/33um) infrared line flux ratios, traditionally used to estimate the density of the ionized gas, in a sample of 41 Type 1 and Type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on board Spitzer. The majority of galaxies with both [NeV] lines detected have observed [NeV] line flux ratios consistent with or below the theoretical low density limit, based on calculations using currently available collision strengths and ignoring absorption and stimulated emission. We find that Type 2 AG…
Infrared ~5--35 um spectra for 40 solar-mass T Tauri stars and 7 intermediate-mass Herbig Ae stars with circumstellar disks were obtained using the Spitzer Space Telescope as part of the c2d IRS survey. This work complements prior spectroscopic studies of silicate infrared emission from disks, which were focused on intermediate-mass stars, with observations of solar-mass stars limited primarily to the 10 um region. The observed 10 and 20 um silicate feature strengths/shapes are consistent with source-to-source variations in grain size. A large fraction of the features are weak and flat, consis…
Full low resolution (65<R<130) and high resolution (R~600) spectra between 5 microns and 37 microns obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope are presented for eight classical active galactic nuclei (AGN) which have been extensively studied previously. Spectra of these AGN are presented as comparison standards for the many objects, including sources at high redshift, which are being observed spectroscopically in the mid-infrared for the first time using the IRS. The AGN are NGC4151, Markarian 3, I Zwicky 1, NGC 1275, Centaurus A, NGC 7469, Markarian 231, and …
