We present the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes calculations of an $sπ$ pairing state of two band superconductivity as a model for the FeAs superconductors. The $sπ$ state is an s-wave pairing state with an internal $π$ phase, that is, nodeless gaps on each band but with the opposite sign. The novel features of this state are investigated by calculating the local density of states of the $π$ phase superconductor/normal metal bilayers. Because of the sign reversal between the two condensates, the zero bias conductance peak appears as observed in tunneling spectroscopy experiments on FeAs superconductors. This eliminates the major obstacle to establish the $sπ$ state as the pairing symmetry of the FeAs superconductors.
We study tunneling conductance in normal metal / insulator / ferromagnetic superconductor junctions. The tunneling spectra show a clear difference between spin-singlet s-wave pairing, spin-triplet opposite spin pairing and spin-triplet equal spin pairing: These pairings exhibit, respectively, gap struture, double peak structure and zero bias peak in the spectra. The obtained result may serve as a tool for determining the pairing symmetry of ferromagnetic superconductors.
We have analyzed scanning tunneling spectra of two electron-doped cuprates Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4 (Tc = 21 K and 24 K) and compared them with tunneling spectrum of hole-doped La1.84Sr0.16CuO4 and effective electron-boson spectral function of hole-doped La1.97Sr0.03CuO4 (extracted from angle-resolved photoemission spectrum). We have also analyzed tunneling spectra and angle-resolved photoemission spectra for hole-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8. These results unambiguously rule out magnetic pairing mechanism in both electron- and hole-doped cuprates and support polaronic/bipolaronic superconductivity in hole-d…
The implications of the two-pocket Fermi surface for macroscopic quantum phenomena are considered. We demonstrate that in the case of the two-pocket Fermi surface the g-wave pairing is closely related to the d-wave one. As a result two macroscopic condensates arise. The Josephson tunneling for such two-component system has very special properties. We prove that the presence of the g-wave does not contradict the existing experimental data on tunneling. We also discuss the possible ways to experimentally reveal the g-wave component.
We examine the tunneling spectroscopy of three-dimensional normal-metal/Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ junctions as an experimental means to identify pairing symmetry in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. In particular, we consider three different possible pairing states in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$: spin-singlet chiral $d$-wave, spin-triplet helical $p$-wave, and spin-nematic $f$-wave ones, all of which are consistent with recent nuclear-magnetic-resonance experiments [A. Pustogow et al., Nature 574, 72 (2019)]. The Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk theory is employed to calculate the tunneling conductance, and the cylindrical two-dimensional Fermi …
The origin of Cooper pairing in high-temperature superconductors, such as the copper-oxide and iron-based system, is still under debate. High transition temperatures together with unconventional pairing states support the picture of an electronic pairing glue in the cuprates, where superconductivity is mediated by collective bosonic excitations of the electron fluid. In other materials, most importantly iron based systems with only hole or only electron pockets, the microscopic origin is hotly debated. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been shown to be a powerful experimental probe to de…
A theory of tunneling conductance in ferromagnetic metal/insulator/triplet - supercondcutor junctions is presented for unitary and non-unitary spin triplet pairing states which are promising candidates for the superconducting paring symmetry of Sr2RuO4. As the magnitude of the exchange interaction in the ferromagnetic metal is increased, the conductance for the unitary pairing state below the energy gap is reduced in contrast to the case for the non-unitary pairing state.
There is a clear discrepancy among the energy-gap values for different 90 K cuprates, inferred from tunneling measurements. By using the phase diagram for hole-doped cuprates we show that tunneling measurements performed on 90 K cuprates, simply, detect two different energy gaps: the pairing gap and the coherent gap, which are identical in conventional superconductors. We find that there are two reasons why tunneling measurements show in one cuprate exclusively the coherent gap while, in another cuprate, they show the pairing gap: (i) the number of CuO2 planes per unit cell in the cuprate, and…
We apply the fermion functional renormalization group method to determine the pairing symmetry and pairing mechanism of the FeAs-Based materials. Within a five band model with pure repulsive interactions, we find an electronic-driven superconducting pairing instability. For the doping and interaction parameters we have examined, extended s-wave, whose order parameter takes on opposite sign on the electron and hole pockets, is always the most favorable pairing symmetry. The pairing mechanism is the inter Fermi surface Josephson scattering generated by the antiferromagnetic correlation.
We study the point-contact tunneling between normal metal and ferromagnetic superconductor. In the case of magnon-induced pairing the tunneling conductance is continuous and smooth function of the applied voltage. For small values of the applied voltage the Ohm law holds. We show that one can obtain the magnetization and the superconducting order parameter from the tunneling conduc- tance. In the case of paramagnon-induced superconductivity the tunneling does not depend on the magnetization. We argue that tunneling experiment can unambiguously determine the correct pairing mechanism in the fer…
The pairing mechanism in the iron pnictides remains unresolved yet. One of the central issues is the structure of the superconducting order parameter which classifies the community into two different and highly disputed camps. On one hand the picture of pairing based on the magnetic origin predicts a sign reversal gap on the electron and hole Fermi pockets, leading to the S+- pairing. On the other hand, a more conventional S++ pairing gap was suggested based on the phonon or orbital fluctuation mediated pairing. In the superconducting state, the impurities may generate a unique pattern of loca…
Tunneling and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements in cuprates are discussed. There is a clear discrepancy among energy-gap values for different 90 K cuprates, inferred from tunneling measurements. By using the phase diagram of hole-doped cuprates we interpret tunneling measurements in 90 K cuprates and INS data in YBCO.
Fine structures in the tunneling spectra of superconductors have been widely used to identify fingerprints of the interaction responsible for Cooper pairing. Here we show that for scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of Pb, the inclusion of inelastic tunneling processes is crucial for the proper interpretation of these fine structures. For STM the usual McMillan inversion algorithm of tunneling spectra must therefore be modified to include inelastic tunneling events, an insight that is crucial for the identification of the pairing glue in conventional and unconventional superconductors alike.
The local density of states (LDOS) around a vortex core is studied theoretically in terms of the odd-frequency (odd-omega) Cooper pairing induced around the center of the vortex core. We find a robust zero-energy peak in the LDOS at a vortex core in a chiral p-wave superconductor originating from an odd-omega s-wave pair amplitude. We suggest how to discriminate a spin-triplet pairing symmetry and spatial chiral-domain structure by scanning tunneling spectroscopy via odd-omega pair amplitudes inside vortex cores.
We present a quantitative analysis of the low-temperature, high parallel field pairing resonance in ultra-thin superconducting Al films with dimensionless conductance g>>1. In this regime we derive an analytical expression for the tunneling density-of-states spectrum from which a variety of normal-state spin parameters can be extracted. We show that by fitting tunneling data at several supercritical parallel magnetic fields we can determine all of the relevant parameters that have traditionally been obtained via fits to tunneling data in the superconducting phase. These include the spin-orbit …
Conductivity mechanism in the regime of the intrinsic Josephson effect in layered superconductors with singlet d-wave pairing is studied theoretically. The cases of coherent and incoherent interlayer tunneling of electrons are considered. The theory with coherent tunneling describes main qualitative features of the effect observed in highly anisotropic high-T$_c$ superconductors at voltages smaller than the amplitude of the superconducting gap, mechanism of the resistivity being related to excitations of the quasiparticles via the d-wave gap. At voltages of the order of the gap amplitude and l…
We show that the pairing resonance in the Pauli-limited normal state of ultra-thin superconducting Al films provides a spin-resolved probe of conduction electron polarization in thin magnetic films. A superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet tunneling junction is used to measure the density of states in supercritical parallel magnetic fields that are well beyond the Clogston-Chandresekhar limit, thus greatly extending the field range of the tunneling density of states technique. The applicability and limitations of using the pairing resonance as a spin probe are discussed.
A phenomenological theory of tunneling spectroscopy for Fe-pnictide superconductors is developed by taking into consideration of asymmetric interface scattering between particle and holes. It is shown that in consistent with anti-phase $s^{\pm}$-wave pairing, appreciable zero-energy surface bound states exist on the [100] surface of Fe-pnictide superconductors. However, in contrast to the [110] bound states in $d$-wave cuprate superconductors, these bound states arise as a result of non-conservation of momentum perpendicular to the interface for tunneling electrons and the $s^{\pm}$ pairing, a…
For the newly discovered ironbased superconductors we propose a one band model for conduction band with first and secondnearestneighbor electron hoppings with two types of d wave and three types of s wave pairing symmetries for the superconductivity. We have calculated the Greens functions from which the temperature dependent superconducting (SC) gap and tunneling conductance are calculated and computed numerically. The evolution of the SC gap and the tunneling conductance spectra are investigated for different model parameters of the system.
Using the Bethe-Salpeter equation including high electric fields, the dependence of the critical temperature of onsetting superconductivity on the applied field is calculated analytically. The critical temperature of pairing is shown to increase with the applied field strength. This is a new field effect and could contribute to the explanation of recent experiments on field induced superconductivity. From the field dependence of the Bethe-Salpeter equation, the two--particle bound state solution is obtained as a resonance with a tunneling probability analogous to the WKB solution of a single p…
Since the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in cuprates, Josephson junction based phase-sensitive experiments are believed and used to provide the most convincing evidence for determining the pairing symmetry. Regardless of different junction materials and geometries used, quantum tunneling involved in these experiments is essentially a nanoscale process, and thus, actual experimental results are extremely sensitive to atomic details of the junction structures. The situation has led to controversial results as to the nature of the pairing symmetry of cuprates: while in-plane junc…
We calculate the tunneling conductance spectra of a normal metal / insulator / triplet superconductor from the reflection amplitudes using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formula. For the triplet superconductor we assume one special p-wave order parameter having line nodes and two two dimensional $f$-wave order parameters with line nodes breaking the time-reversal symmetry. Also we examine nodeless pairing potentials. The tunneling peaks are due to the formation of bound states for each surface orientation at discrete quasiparticles trajectory angles. The tunneling spectra can be used to di…
We modify and extend previous microscopic calculations of tunneling in superconducting junctions based on a non-equilibrium Green function formalism to include the case of spin-triplet pairing. We show that distinctive features are present in the I-V characteristics of different kinds of junctions, in particular when the effects of magnetic fields are taken into account, that permit to identify the type of pairing. We discuss the relevance of these results in the context of quasi one-dimensional organic superconductors like (TMTSF)_2(PF_6) and layered compounds like Sr_2RuO_4.
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has made tremendous progress in the study and understanding of both classical and unconventional superconductors. This has motivated a rapidly growing effort to apply the same techniques to the iron-based high-Tc superconductors since their discovery in 2008. Five years have brought exciting advances in imaging and spectroscopic investigation of this new class of materials. In this review, we focus on several recent STM contributions to the identification of the gap symmetry and pairing glue. We highlight the unique capabilities and challenges still ahead fo…
We investigate the competition between the extended $s_{\pm}$-wave and $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing order parameters in the iron-based superconductors. Because of the frustrating pairing interactions among the electron and the hole fermi pockets, a time reversal symmetry breaking $s+id$ pairing state could be favored. We analyze this pairing state within the Ginzburg-Landau theory, and explore the experimental consequences. In such a state, spatial inhomogeneity induces supercurrent near a non-magnetic impurity and the corners of a square sample. The resonance mode between the $s_{\pm}$ and $d_{…
Determining the pairing symmetry of single-layer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$ is the key to understanding the enhanced pairing mechanism; furthermore, it guides exploring new superconductors with high transition temperatures ($T_\mathrm{c}$). Despite significant efforts, it remains controversial whether the symmetry is the sign-preserving $s$- or the sign-changed $s_{\pm}$-wave. Here, we investigate the pairing symmetry of single-layer FeSe from a topological point of view. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we have systematically characterized the superconducting states at…
This work is motivated by a specific point of view: at short distances and high energies the undoped and underdoped cuprates resemble the $π$-flux phase of the t-J model. The purpose of this paper is to present a mechanism by which pairing grows out of the doped $π$-flux phase. According to this mechanism pairing symmetry is determined by a parameter controlling the quantum tunneling of gauge flux quanta. For zero tunneling the symmetry is $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$, while for large tunneling it is $d_{x^2-y^2}$. A zero-temperature critical point separates these two limits.
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy was performed on c-axis Y{1-x}Ca{x}Ba2Cu3O{7-delta} thin films for x= 0, 0.05, 0.15 and 0.20 at 4.2K. The measured spectra show main-gap, sub-gap and satellite features which scale similarly in energy versus Ca-doping, suggesting that they are associated with a single pairing energy. The data is analyzed with a multiband tunneling model which attributes the sub-gap features to the chain band and the satellite and main-gap features to the plane band for d+s pairing symmetry. These results suggest that the superconductivity in Y{1-x}Ca{x}Ba2Cu3O{7-delta} involves …
A leading contender for the pairing symmetry in the Fe-pnictide high temperature superconductors is extended s-wave $s_\pm$, a nodeless state in which the pairing changes sign between Fermi surfaces. Verifying such a pairing symmetry requires a special phase sensitive probe that is also momentum selective. We show that the sign structure of $s_\pm$ pairing leads to surface Andreev bound states at the sample edge. In the clean limit they only occur when the edge is along the nearest neighbor Fe-Fe bond, but not for a diagonal edge or a surface orthogonal to the c-axis. In contrast to d-wave And…
Quantum Zeno Effect (QZE) is the suppression of the inter-subspace transition by a relatively fast intra-subspace decoherence. Earlier, we had proposed a QZE-based mechanism for the temperature-dependent normal-state c-axis resistivity of the layered high-T$_c$ cuprate superconductors in which the single-particle inter-layer tunneling is blocked by the strong intra-layer decoherence (entanglement). We now argue that while the single-particle inter-layer tunneling is thus blocked, the tunneling of the bosonic BCS-like pairs must remain unblocked inasmuch as a BCS pairing condensate is an eigens…
Cooper's formalism for fermionic pairing has been revisited considering upto 3rd neighbour hopping terms, firstly with a Fermi liquid like background on a square lattice keeping in mind the overdopped cuprates. Then the whole scheme is repeated with a Marginal Fermi liquid- like background, taking into account the self energy correction of the mobile electrons to include a more realitic density of states in the calculation. Detailed comparison of our theoretical results with those from experiments strongly supports the Marginal Fermi liquid- like character of the normal phase with exciton medi…
We use scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) to elucidate the Cooper pairing of the iron pnictide superconductor Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2. By a cold-cleaving technique, we obtain atomically resolved termination surfaces with different layer identities. Remarkably, we observe that the low-energy tunneling spectrum related to superconductivity has an unprecedented dependence on the layer-identity. By cross-referencing with the angle-revolved photoemission results and the tunneling data of LiFeAs, we find that tunneling on each termination surface probes superconductivity through selecting di…
The low energy band structure of the FeAs based superconductors is fitted by a tight binding model with two Fe ions per unit cell and two degenerate orbitals per Fe ion. Based on this, superconductivity with extended s-wave pairing symmetry of the form $\cos k_x +\cos k_y$ is examined. The local density of states near an impurity is also investigated by using T-matrix approach. For the nonmagnetic scattering potential, we found that there exist two major resonances inside the gap. The height of the resonance peaks depends on the strength of the impurity potential. These in-gap resonances are o…
We propose here an experiment aimed to determine whether there are superconducting pairing fluctuations in the pseudogap regime of the high-$T_c$ materials. In the experimental setup, two samples above $T_c$ are brought into contact at a single point and the differential AC conductivity in the presence of a constant applied bias voltage between the samples, $V$, should be measured. We argue the the pairing fluctuations will produce randomly fluctuating Josephson current with zero mean, however the current-current correlator will have a characteristic frequency given by Josephson frequency $ω_J…
We study the surface Andreev bound states (SABSs) and quasiparticle tunneling spectroscopy of three-dimensional (3D) chiral superconductor by changing the surface (interface) misorientation angle of chiral superconductors. We obtain analytical formula of the energy dispersion of SABS for general pair potential when an original 4$\times$4 BdG Hamiltonian can be reduced to be two 2$\times$2 blocks. The resulting SABS for 3D chiral superconductors with pair potential given by $k_z(k_x + ik_y)^ν$ $(ν = 1, 2)$ has a complicated energy dispersion due to the coexistence of both point and line nodes. …
We have calculated the tunneling conductance of a superconductor-insulator-superconductor junction based on the polaron-bipolaron theory of superconductivity. The predicted incoherent hump features are in quantitative agreement with tunneling spectra of optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+y and Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+y. We further show that angle-resolved photoemission spectra of underdoped cuprates are consistent with the Bose-Einstein condensation of inter-site bipolarons and that the superconducting gap symmetry is d-wave, which is determined by the anomalous kinetic process rather than by the pairing i…
We calculate the tunneling conductance spectra of a ferromagnetic metal / insulator / triplet superconductor from the reflection amplitudes using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formula. For the triplet superconductor, we assume one special $p$-wave order parameter, having line nodes, and two two dimensional $f$-wave order parameters with line nodes, breaking the time reversal symmetry. Also we examine nodeless pairing potentials. The evolution of the spectra with the exchange potential depends solely on the topology of the gap. The weak Andreev reflection within the ferromagnet results in …
An advanced theoretical framework is introduced and examined. Its main idea is to extract properties of the superconducting pairing gap function $Δ(ω)$ in the conventional, nearly localized superconductors. To test the approach, we present an experimentally relevant benchmark model with defined normal and superconducting sectors. The developed reverse engineering framework consists of two logic steps. First, dismantle the superconducting density of states into the effects coming from the superconducting pairing and effects inherited from the normal state. Second, extract and reconstruct proper…
In this work, we establish a few exact identities through commutation of intra-orbital and inter-orbital on-site pairings with a two-orbital model describing newly discovered FeAs-based superconductors. Applying the conclusion drawn from rigorous relation and physical interpretation, we give constraints on the possible symmetries of the superconducting pairing of the model. Hence the favorable pairings in newly discovered high-temperature oxypnictide superconductors are proposed.
We have studied a general property of unconventional superconductors with spin-orbit coupling by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation and found that the two of four eigenfunctions for triplet pairing coincide with those for s-wave pairing when a relation holds between pairing symmetry and spin-orbit coupling, indicative of an intrinsically s-wave like property of triplet superconductors. Applying the result, we have studied the tunneling conductance in normal metal / insulator / unconventional superconductor junctions with a candidate of pairing symmetry of CePt$_3$Si. The effect of Rashb…
We calculate the tunneling conductance spectra of a normal-metal/insulator/triplet superconductor using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formulation. Possible states for the superconductor are considered with horizontal lines of nodes, breaking the time reversal symmetry. These results would be useful to discriminate between pairing states in superonductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and also in UPt$_3$.
We investigate the conductance spectra of a normal/superconductor graphene junction using the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism, considering pairing potentials that are both conventional (isotropic s-wave) and unconventional (anisotropic d-wave). In particular, we study the full crossover from normal to specular Andreev reflection without restricting ourselves to special limits and approximations, thus expanding results obtained in previous work. In addition, we investigate in detail how the conductance spectra are affected if it is possible to induce an unconventional pairing symmet…
In this paper we present a real space pairing glue for the iron-based layered superconductors. It is shown that two static electrons embedded symmetrically into two adjacent Fe plaquettes of the superconductor can be bounded due to the Coulombic interaction. The pairing mechanism favors the existence of the pseudogap in the underdoped FeAs superconductors. A criterion is introduced to distinguish whether or not the pseudogap can open in a material.
Ferromagnetic spin valves offer the key building blocks to integrate giant- and tunneling-magnetoresistance effects into spintronics devices. Starting from a generalized Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk approach, we theoretically investigate the impact of interfacial Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings on the tunneling conductance, and thereby the magnetoresistance characteristics, of ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet spin-valve junctions embedding thin superconducting spacers between the either parallel or antiparallel magnetized ferromagnets. We focus on the unique interplay between usu…
We analyze how the coherence peaks observed in Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) of cuprate high temperature superconductors are transferred from the cuprate layer to the oxide layers adjacent to the STS microscope tip. For this purpose, we have carried out a realistic multiband calculation for the superconducting state of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) assuming a short range d-wave pairing interaction confined to the nearest-neighbor Cu $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals. The resulting anomalous matrix elements of the Green's function allow us to monitor how pairing is then induced not only w…
The isotope effects for Fe based superconductors are considered by including the phonon and magnetic fluctuations within the two band Eliashberg theory. We show that the recently observed inverse isotope effects of Fe, $α_{Fe} \approx -0.18 \pm 0.03 $,\cite{Shirage0903.3515} as well as the large positive isotope exponent ($α\approx 0.35$) can naturally arise for the magnetically induced sign revered s-wave pairing state within reasonable parameter range. Either experimental report can not be discarded from the present analysis based on the parameter values they require. The inverse and positiv…
Effects of impurity scattering on tunneling conductance in dirty normal-metal/insulator/superconductor junctions are studied based on the Kubo formula and the recursive Green function method. The zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) is a consequence of the unconventional pairing symmetry in superconductors. The impurity scattering in normal metals suppresses the amplitude of the ZBCP. The degree of the suppression agrees well with results of the quasiclassical Green function theory. When superconductors have $d$+is-wave pairing symmetry, the time-reversal symmetry is broken in superconductors and…
We revisit the problem of point-contact tunnel junctions involving one-dimensional superconductors and present a simple scheme for computing the full current-voltage characteristics within the framework of the non-equilibrium Keldysh Green function formalism. We address the effects of different pairing symmetries combined with magnetic fields and finite temperatures at arbitrary bias voltages. We discuss extensively the importance of these results for present-day experiments. In particular, we propose ways of measuring the effects found when the two sides of the junction have dissimilar superc…
Considerable evidence for proximity-induced triplet superconductivity on the ferromagnetic side of a superconductor-ferromagnet (S-F) interface now exists; however, the corresponding effect on the superconductor side has hardly been addressed. We have performed scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on NbN superconducting thin films proximity coupled to the half-metallic ferromagnet La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) as a function of magnetic field. We have found that at zero and low applied magnetic fields the tunneling spectra on NbN typically show an anomalous gap structure with suppressed coheren…
To establish the mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in Sr$_2$RUO$_4$, a prerequisite is direct information concerning the momentum-space structure of the energy gaps $Δ_i(k)$, and in particular whether the pairing strength is stronger ("dominant") on the quasi-1D ($α$ and $β$) or on the quasi-2D ($γ$) Fermi surfaces. We present scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements of the density-of-states spectra in the superconducting state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ for $0.1 T_C<T<T_C$, and analyze them, along with published thermodynamic data, using a simple phenomenological model. We show that…
In noncentrosymmetric superconductors (NCSs), the conversion of a charge current into spin magnetization - the so called magnetoelectric effect - is the direct indicator of the unconventional, mixed-parity order parameter. This paper proposes a scheme to detect the magnetoelectric effect by anomalous, equal-spin Andreev tunneling in NCS/ferromagnet contacts. The proposal relies on the ability to generate spin-polarized triplet pairing by passing an electric current through an NCS. Such an induced triplet pairing bears a similarity to the paradigmatic nonunitary pairing in triplet superfluids w…
The tunneling characteristics of planar junctions between a normal metal and a non-centrosymmetric superconductor like CePt3Si are examined. It is shown that the superconducting phase with mixed parity can give rise to characteristic zero-bias anomalies in certain junction directions. The origin of these zero-bias anomalies are Andreev bound states at the interface. The tunneling characteristics for different directions allow to test the structure of the parity-mixed pairing state.
One of the outstanding problems in Iron pnictide research is the unambiguous detection of its pairing symmetry. The most probable candidates are the two-band s$++$ and sign reversed s$\pm$ wave pairing. In this work, the Andreev conductance and shot noise are used as a probe for the pairing symmetry of Iron pnictide superconductors. Clear differences emerge in both the zero bias differential conductance and the shot noise in the tunneling limit for the two cases enabling an effective distinction between the two.
We study the behavior of Cooper pair amplitudes that emerge when a two-dimensional superconductor is coupled to two parallel nanowires, focusing on the conditions for realizing odd-frequency pair amplitudes in the absence of spin-orbit coupling or magnetism. In general, any finite tunneling between the superconductor and the two nanowires induces odd-frequency spin-singlet pair amplitudes in the substrate as well as a substantial odd-frequency interwire pairing, both of which vanish locally. Interestingly, in the regime of strong superconductor-nanowire tunneling, we find that the presence of …
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) studies reveal long-range (~100 nm) spatial homogeneity in optimally and underdoped superconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} (YBCO) single crystals and thin films, and macroscopic spatial modulations in overdoped (Y_{0.7}Ca_{0.3})Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} (Ca-YBCO) epitaxial films. In contrast, STS on an optimally doped YBa_2(Cu_{0.9934}Zn_{0.0026}Mg_{0.004})_3O_{6.9} single crystal exhibits strong spatial modulations and suppression of superconductivity over a microscopic scale near the Zn or Mg impurity sites, and the global pairing potential is also reduced relative to t…
