In this paper we present a real space pairing glue for the iron-based layered superconductors. It is shown that two static electrons embedded symmetrically into two adjacent Fe plaquettes of the superconductor can be bounded due to the Coulombic interaction. The pairing mechanism favors the existence of the pseudogap in the underdoped FeAs superconductors. A criterion is introduced to distinguish whether or not the pseudogap can open in a material.
The question of whether one should speak of a "pairing glue" in the Hubbard and t-J models is basically a question about the dynamics of the pairing interaction. If the dynamics of the pairing interaction arises from virtual states, whose energies correspond to the Mott gap, and give rise to the exchange coupling J, the interaction is instantaneous on the relative time scales of interest. In this case, while one might speak of an "instantaneous glue", this interaction differs from the traditional picture of a retarded pairing interaction. However, if the energies correspond to the spectrum see…
We examine the validity of the weak coupling spin-susceptibility "glue" approximation (SSGA) in a two-dimensional Hubbard model for cuprates. For comparison, we employ the well-established dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) with a quantum Monte Carlo algorithm as a cluster solver. We compare the leading eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions of the DCA and SSGA pairing matrices. For realistic model parameters, we find that the SSGA fails to capture the leading pairing symmetries seen in the DCA. Furthermore, when the SSGA is improved through the addition of a term with d-wave symmetry…
Recently, machine learning was applied to extract both the normal and the anomalous components of the self-energy from photoemission data at the antinodal points in Bi-based cuprate high-temperature superconductors [Y. Yamaji {\it et al.}, arXiv:1903.08060]. It was argued that both components do show prominent peaks near 50 meV, which hold information about the pairing glue, but the peaks are hidden in the actual data, which measure only the total self-energy. We analyze the self-energy within an effective fermion-boson theory. We show that soft thermal fluctuations give rise to peaks in both …
We analyze optical spectra of high temperature superconductors using a minimal model of electrons coupled to bosons. We consider the marginal Fermi liquid theory and the spin fluctuation theory, as well as a histogram representation of the bosonic spectral density. We find that the two theories can both be used to describe the experimental data provided that we allow for an additional scattering channel with an energy of 55 meV.
A grand challenge in many-body quantum physics is to explain the apparent connection between quantum criticality and high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates and similar systems, such as the iron pnictides and chalcogenides. Here we argue that the quantum-critical regime plays an essential role in activating a strong-pairing mechanism: although pairing bosons create a symmetry-breaking instability which suppresses pairing, the combination of these broken-symmetry states within the critical regime can restore this symmetry for the paired quasiparticles. This condition is shown to be m…
Cluster dynamical mean field calculations are used to construct the superconducting gap function of the two dimensional Hubbard model. The frequency dependence of the imaginary part of the gap function indicates that the pairing is dominated by fluctuations at two characteristic frequencies: one at the scale of the hopping matrix element $t$ and one at a much lower scale. The lower frequency component becomes more important as the doping is reduced into the pseudogap regime. Comparison to available information on the spin fluctuation spectrum of the model suggests that the superconductivity ar…
An emergence of magnetic boson of instantonic nature, that provides a Cooper-'pairing glue', is considered in the repulsive 'nested' Hubbard model of superconducting cuprates. It is demonstrated, that antiferromagnetic instantons of a spin density wave type may have negative energy due to coupling with Cooper pair condensate. A set of Eliashberg-like equations is derived and solved self-consistently, proving the above suggestion. An instantonic propagator plays the role of Green function of pairing 'glue' boson. Simultaneously, the instantons defy condensation of the mean-field SDW order. We h…

It has gone almost unquestioned that superexchange in the t-J (or Hubbard) model, and not phonons, is responsible for the unconventional ("d-wave") pairing symmetry of cuprate superconductors. However a number of advanced numerical studies have not found superconductivity in the Hubbard model. On the other hand compelling experimental evidence for a strong electron-phonon interaction (EPI) has currently arrived. Here I briefly review some phonon-mediated unconventional pairing mechanisms. In particular the anisotropy of sound velocity makes the phonon-mediated attraction of electrons non-local…
In a recent article [Science 317, 1705 (2007)], Anderson pointed out that many theories about electron pairing in cuprate superconductors may be on the wrong track and there is no reason to believe that the dynamic screening (k-space) can provide a valid glue to hold the electron pairs together. On the other hand, the most recent experimental observations imply the possible generic existence of the real space localized Cooper pairs in amorphous insulating and other nonsuperconducting systems [M. D. Stewart Jr. et al., Science 318, 1273 (2007)]. It is therefore clear that the glue for high-T_{c…
In this work, we establish a few exact identities through commutation of intra-orbital and inter-orbital on-site pairings with a two-orbital model describing newly discovered FeAs-based superconductors. Applying the conclusion drawn from rigorous relation and physical interpretation, we give constraints on the possible symmetries of the superconducting pairing of the model. Hence the favorable pairings in newly discovered high-temperature oxypnictide superconductors are proposed.
Recent observation of a "kink" in single-particle dispersion in photoemission experiments on cuprate superconductors has initiated a heated debate over the issue of a boson that mediates the pairing in cuprates. If the "kink" is indeed caused by interaction with a bosonic excitation, then there are two possible candidates: phonons and spin fluctuations. Here, the role of anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in shaping the phase diagram of cuprate superconductors will be discussed. By using the local (momentum-integrated) dynamic spin susceptibility, recently measured in neutron scattering expe…
The spin-rotationally invariant SU(2) approach to the Hubbard model is extended to accommodate the charge degrees of freedom. Both U(1) and SU(2) gauge transformation are useed to factorize the charge and spin contribution to the original electron operator in terms of the emergent gauge fields. It is shown that these fields play a similar role as phonons in the BCS theory: they provide the "glue" for fermion pairing. By tracing out gauge bosons the form of paired states is established and the role of antiferromagnetic correlations is explicated.
The real-space localized hole pair is constructed in the Cu-O plane of the hole-doped cuprate superconductors. We prove analytically and numerically that two electrons, due to the nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsive confinement effect, can be in pairing inside a single plaquette with the d-wave symmetry. The scenario supports the `no glue' pairing picture for the cuprates. Based on the scenarios, the physical origin of the Fermi pocket (or Fermi arc) and the two pseudogap behavior are provided. Our framework leads directly to a unified linear relationship between the pseudogap temperature T* an…
In strongly correlated materials the electronic and optical properties are significantly affected by the coupling of fermionic quasiparticles to different degrees of freedom, such as lattice vibrations and bosonic excitations of electronic origin. Broadband ultrafast spectroscopy is emerging as the premier technique to unravel the subtle interplay between quasiparticles and electronic or phononic collective excitations, by their different characteristic timescales and spectral responses. By investigating the femtosecond dynamics of the optical properties of Y-Bi2212 crystals over the 0.5-2 eV …
In the present paper, we propose the parity even, orbital singlet and spin triplet pairing state as the ground state of the newly discovered super-conductor $LaO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$.The pairing mechanism involves both the special shape of the electron fermi surface and the strong ferromagnetic fluctuation induced by Hund's rule coupling. The special behavior of the Bogoliubov quasi-particle spectrum may leads to "Fermi arc" like anisotropy super-conducting gap, which can be detected by angle resolved photo emission(ARPES).The impurity effects are also discussed.
The pairing mechanism in A$_3$C$_{60}$ is investigated by studying the properties of a three-orbital Hubbard model with antiferromagnetic Hund coupling in the normal and superconducting phase. Local orbital fluctuations are shown to be substantially enhanced in the superconducting state, with a fluctuation energy scale that matches the low-energy peak in the spectral weight of the order parameter. Our results demonstrate that local orbital fluctuations provide the pairing glue in strongly correlated fulleride superconductors and support the spin/orbital freezing theory of unconventional superc…
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has made tremendous progress in the study and understanding of both classical and unconventional superconductors. This has motivated a rapidly growing effort to apply the same techniques to the iron-based high-Tc superconductors since their discovery in 2008. Five years have brought exciting advances in imaging and spectroscopic investigation of this new class of materials. In this review, we focus on several recent STM contributions to the identification of the gap symmetry and pairing glue. We highlight the unique capabilities and challenges still ahead fo…
We have computed alpha^2F's for the hole-doped cuprates within the framework of the one-band Hubbard model, where the full magnetic response of the system is treated properly. The d-wave pairing weight alpha^2F_d is found to contain not only a low energy peak due to excitations near (pi,pi) expected from neutron scattering data, but to also display substantial spectral weight at higher energies due to contributions from other parts of the Brillouin zone as well as pairbreaking ferromagnetic excitations at low energies. The resulting solutions of the Eliashberg equations yield transition temper…
Superconductivity originates from the coupling between charge carriers and bosonic excitations of either phononic or electronic origin. Identifying the most relevant pairing glue is a key step towards a clear understanding of the unconventional superconductivity. Here, by applying the ultrafast optical spectroscopy on the electron-doped cuprates La$_{1.9}$Ce$_{0.1}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$, we discern a bosonic mode of electronic origin that has the strongest coupling with the charge carriers near $T_c$. We argue that this mode is associated with the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, a…
We study the non-local superconducting pairing of two interacting Anderson impurities, which has an instability near the quantum critical point from the competition between the Kondo effect and an antiferromagnetic inter-impurity spin exchange interaction. As revealed by the dynamics over the whole energy range, the superconducting pairing fluctuations acquire considerable strength from an energy scale much higher than the characteristic spin fluctuation scale while the low energy behaviors follow those of the staggered spin susceptibility. We argue that the glue to the superconducting pairing…
Electronic band dispersions in copper oxide superconductors have kinks around 70 meV that are typically attributed to coupling of electrons to a bosonic mode. We performed angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on overdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors to test the relationship between the superconducting transition temperature and electron-bosonic mode coupling. Remarkably, the kinks remain strong in the heavily overdoped region of the doping phase diagram of LSCO, even when the superconductivity completely disappears. This unexpected observation is incompati…
We implement the rotationally-invariant formulation of the two-dimensional Hubbard model, with nearest-neighbors hopping $t$, which allows for the analytical study of the system in the low-energy limit. Both U(1) and SU(2) gauge transformations are used to factorize the charge and spin contributions to the original electron operator in terms of the corresponding gauge fields. The Hubbard Coulomb energy $U$ term is then expressed in terms of quantum phase variables conjugate to the local charge and variable spin-quantization axis, providing a useful representation of strongly correlated systems…
Although the pairing glue for the attractive quasiparticle interaction responsible for unconventional superconductivity in heavy electron materials has been identified as the spin fluctuations that arise from their proximity to a magnetic quantum critical point, there has been no model to describe their superconducting transition at Tc that is comparable to that found by Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer (BCS) for conventional superconductors where phonons provide the pairing glue. Here we propose a phenomenological BCS-like expression for Tc in heavy electron materials, that is based on the unu…
We present a systematic photoemission study of the newly discovered high Tc superconductor class (Sr/Ba)1-xKxFe2As2. By utilizing a unique photon energy range and scattering geometry we resolve the details of the single particle dynamics of interacting electrons on the central Fermi surfaces of this series which shows overall strong coupling behavior (2D/kBTc = 6). Quasiparticle dispersion kinks are observed in a binding energy range of 15 to 50 meV which matches the magnetic excitation energy scales (parameterized by J1,J2). The size of the Cooper pair wavefunction is found to be less than 20…
Local spin fluctuations provide the glue for orbital-singlet spin-triplet pairing in the doped Mott insulating regime of multi-orbital Hubbard models. At large Hubbard repulsion $U$, the pairing susceptibility is nevertheless very low, because the pairing interaction cannot overcome the suppression of charge fluctuations. Using nonequilibrium dynamical mean field simulations of the two-orbital Hubbard model, we show that out of equilibrium the pairing susceptibility in this large-$U$ regime can be strongly enhanced by creating a photo-induced population of the relevant charge states, and that …
Muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) studies of the "1111" and "122" FeAs systems have detected static magnetism with variably sized ordered moments in their parent compounds. The phase diagrams of FeAs, CuO, organic BEDT, A$_{3}$C$_{60}$ and heavy-fermion systems indicate competition between static magnetism and superconductivity, associated with first-order phase transitions at quantum phase boundaries. In both FeAs and CuO systems, the superfluid density $n_{s}/m^{*}$ at $T \to 0$ exhibits a nearly linear scaling with $T_{c}$. Analogous to the roton-minimum energy scaling with the lambda transition…
We study the contribution of the electron-spin fluctuation coupling to the superconducting state of the two dimensional Hubbard model within dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) using a numerical exact continuous time Monte Carlo solver. By analyzing the frequency dependence of the self energy, we show that only about half of the superconductivity can be attributed to a "pairing glue" arising from treating spin fluctuations as a pairing boson in the standard one-loop theory.
Superconductivity originates from pairing of electrons. Pairing channel on Fermi surface and pairing glue are thus two pivotal issues for understanding a superconductor. Recently, high-temperature superconductivity over 40 K was found in electron-doped FeSe superconductors including K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$, Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe, and 1 monolayer FeSe thin film. However, their pairing mechanism remains controversial. Here, we studied the systematic evolution of electronic structure in potassium-coated FeSe single crystal. The doping level is controlled precisely by in situ evaporating potass…
Heavy-fermion superconductors are prime candidates for novel electron-pairing states due to the spin-orbital coupled degrees of freedom and electron correlations. Superconductivity in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ discovered in 1979, which is a prototype of unconventional (non-BCS) superconductors in strongly correlated electron systems, still remains unsolved. Here we provide the first report of superconductivity based on the advanced first-principles theoretical approach. We find that the promising candidate is an $s_\pm$-wave state with loop-shaped nodes on the Fermi surface, different from the widely exp…
Josephson junctions between a $FeAs$-based superconductor with antiphase s-wave pairing and a conventional s-wave superconductor are studied. The translational invariance in a planar junction between a single crystal pnictide and an aluminum metal greatly enhances the relative weight of electron pockets in the pnictide to the critical current. In a wide doping region of the pnictide, a planar and a point contact junctions have opposite phases, which can be used to design a tri-junction ring with $π$ phase to probe the antiphase pairing.
The origin of the high temperature superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors remains elusive after being extensively studied for more than a decade. Determination of the pairing symmetry is essential in understanding the superconductivity mechanism. In the iron-based superconductors that have hole pockets around the Brillouin zone center and electron pockets around the zone corners, the pairing symmetry is generally considered to be s$_\pm$, endowing a sign change in the superconducting gap between the hole and electron pockets. For the iron-based superconductors with only hole pocke…
We study the fluctuations responsible for pairing in the $d$-wave superconducting state of the two-dimensional Hubbard model at intermediate coupling within a cluster dynamical mean-field theory with a numerically exact quantum impurity solver. By analyzing how momentum and frequency dependent fluctuations generate the $d-$wave superconducting state in different representations, we identify antiferromagnetic fluctuations as the pairing glue of superconductivity both in the underdoped and the overdoped regime. Nevertheless, in the intermediate coupling regime, the predominant magnetic fluctuati…
A small number of superconductors are believed to exhibit intrinsic spin triplet pairing, and they are often discussed in terms of a simple, $^3$He-like picture where ferromagnetic spin fluctuations provide the "glue". However, in some cases in which reliable inelastic neutron scattering measurements are available, spin excitations are found to be peaked at finite momentum $\bf q$ rather than ${\bf q}=0$. Here we investigate some simple models that exhibit triplet pairing arising from antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. We show that a strong peak at larger ${\bf q}$ in the magnetic susceptibi…
We study the pairing symmetry of a two orbital $J_1-J_2$ model for FeAs layers in oxypnictides. We vary the doping and the value of $J_1$ and $J_2$ to compare all possible pairing symmetries in a mean-field calculation. We show that the mixture of an intra-orbital unconventional $s_{x^2y^2}\sim \cos(k_x)\cos(k_y)$ pairing symmetry and a $d_{x^2-y^2}\sim \cos(k_x)-\cos(k_y)$ pairing symmetry is favored in a large part of $J_1-J_2$ phase diagram. A pure $ s_{x^2y^2}$ pairing state is favored for $J_2>>J_1$. The signs of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ order parameters in two different orbitals are opposite. W…
The electronic states of the FeAs plane in iron-based superconductors are investigated on the basis of the two-dimensional 16-band d-p model, where the tight-binding parameters are determined so as to fit the band structure obtained by the density functional calculation for LaFeAsO. The model includes the Coulomb interaction on a Fe site: the intra- and inter-orbital direct terms U and U', the exchange coupling J and the pair-transfer J'. Within the random phase approximation (RPA), we discuss the pairing symmetry of possible superconducting states including s-wave and d-wave pairing on the U'…

Under the assumption that superconducting pairing is driven by local d-p hybridization, we show that the superconducting state in iron-based superconductors is classified as an odd parity s-wave spin-singlet pairing state in a single trilayer FeAs/Se, the building block of the materials. In a low energy effective model with only d-orbitals in an iron square bipartite lattice, the superconducting order parameter in this state is a combination of a s-wave normal pairing between two sublattices and a s-wave $η$-pairing within the sublattices. Parity conservation was violated in proposed supercond…
Identification of pairing mechanisms leading to the unconventional superconductivity realized in copper-oxide, heavy-fermions, and organic compounds is one of the most challenging issues in condensed-matter physics. Clear evidence for an electron-phonon mechanism in conventional superconductors is seen by the isotope effect on the superconducting transition temperatures $T_{\rm SC}$, since isotopic substitution varies the phonon frequency without affecting the electronic states. In unconventional superconductors, magnetic fluctuations have been proposed to mediate superconductivity, and consid…
Parity is a fundamental quantum number to classify a state of matter. Materials rarely possess ground states with odd parity. We show that the superconducting state in iron-based superconductors is classified as an odd parity s-wave spin-singlet pairing state in a single trilayer FeAs/Se, the building block of the materials. In a low energy effective model constructed on the Fe square bipartite lattice, the superconducting order parameter in this state is a combination of a s-wave normal pairing between two sublattices and a s-wave $η$-pairing within the sublattices. Parity conservation was vi…
The critical temperature (${T}_\text{c}$) of superconductors varies a lot. The factors governing the ${T}_\text{c}$ may hold key clues to understand the nature of the superconductivity. Thereby, ${T}_\text{c}$-involved correlations, such as Matthias laws, Uemura law, and cuprates doping phase diagrams, have been of great concern. However, the electronic interaction being responsible for the carriers pairing in high-${T}_\text{c}$ superconductors is still not clear, which calls for more comprehensive analyses of the experimental data in history. In this work, we propose a novel perspective for …
The recent discovery of iron-based superconductors challenges the existing paradigm of high-temperature superconductivity. Owing to their unusual multi-orbital band structure, magnetism, and electron correlation, theories propose a unique sign reversed s-wave pairing state, with the order parameter changing sign between the electron and hole Fermi pockets. However, because of the complex Fermi surface topology and material related issues, the predicted sign reversal remains unconfirmed. Here we report a novel phase-sensitive technique for probing unconventional pairing symmetry in the polycrys…
In two recent articles (cond-mat/0606177 and arXiv:0804.1615), we have suggested a unified theory of superconductivity based on the real-space spin-parallel electron pairing and superconducting mechanism and have shown that the stable hexagonal and tetragonal vortex lattices (the optimal doping phases) can be expected in the newly discovered LaO{1-x}F{x}FeAs (x0=1/7=0.1428) and SmO{1-x}F{x}FeAs (x0=1/6=0.1667), respectively. In this paper, we present a theoretical study of the effects of hydrostatic and anisotropic pressure on the superconducting transition temperature Tc of the Fe-based layer…
The iron-pnictide superconductors have a layered structureformed by stacks of FeAs planes from which the superconductivity originates. Given the multiband and quasi three-dimensional \cite{3D_SC} (3D) electronic structure of these high-temperature superconductors, knowledge of the quasi-3D superconducting (SC) gap is essential for understanding the superconducting mechanism. By using the \KZ-capability of angle-resolved photoemission, we completely determined the SC gap on all five Fermi surfaces (FSs) in three dimensions on \BKFAOP samples. We found a marked \KZ dispersion of the SC gap, whic…
We propose a new Rashba-free mechanism to realize topological superconductivity with electron-phonon interaction. In the presence of a magnetic field, electron-phonon interaction with small momentum transfer is found to favor spin-triplet Cooper pairing. This process facilitates the formation of chiral topological superconductivity even when Rashba spin-orbital coupling is absent. As a proof of concept, we propose an experimentally feasible heterostructure to systematically study the entangled relationship among forward-phonon scatterings, Rashba spin-orbital couplings, pairing symmetries, and…
