A simplicial complex $Δ$ is called flag if all minimal nonfaces of $Δ$ have at most two elements. The following are proved: First, if $Δ$ is a flag simplicial pseudomanifold of dimension $d-1$, then the graph of $Δ$ (i) is $(2d-2)$-vertex-connected and (ii) has a subgraph which is a subdivision of the graph of the $d$-dimensional cross-polytope. Second, the $h$-vector of a flag simplicial homology sphere $Δ$ of dimension $d-1$ is minimized when $Δ$ is the boundary complex of the $d$-dimensional cross-polytope.
If K is an odd-dimensional flag closed manifold, flag generalized homology sphere or a more general flag weak pseudomanifold with sufficiently many vertices, then the maximal number of edges in K is achieved by the balanced join of cycles. The proof relies on stability results from extremal graph theory. In the case of manifolds we also offer an alternative (very) short proof utilizing the non-embeddability theorem of Flores. The main theorem can also be interpreted without the topological contents as a graph-theoretic extremal result about a class of graphs such that 1) every maximal clique i…
We give a survey on the recent results and problems on the face enumeration of flag complexes and flag simplicial spheres, with an emphasis on the characterization of face vectors of flag complexes, several lower-bound type of conjectures including the Charney-Davis conjecture and Gal's conjecture, and the upper bound conjecture for flag spheres and pseudomanifolds.
We investigate the face numbers of simplicial complexes with Buchsbaum vertex links, especially pseudomanifolds with isolated singularities. This includes deriving Dehn-Sommerville relations for pseudomanifolds with isolated singularities and establishing lower bound theorems when the singularities are also homologically isolated. We give formulas for the Hilbert function of a generic Artinian reduction of the face ring when the singularities are homologically isolated and for any pure two-dimensional complex. Some examples of spaces where the $f$-vector can be completely characterized are des…
We define combinatorial analogues of stable and unstable minimal surfaces in the setting of weighted pseudomanifolds. We prove that, under mild conditions, such combinatorial minimal surfaces always exist. We use a technique, adapted from work of Johnson and Thompson, called thin position. Thin position is defined using orderings of the cells of a pseudomanifold. In addition to defining and finding combinatorial minimal surfaces, from thin orderings, we derive invariants of even-dimensional closed simplicial pseudomanifolds called width and trunk. We study additivity properties of these invari…
Denham, Suciu and Panov, Ray computed ranks of homotopy groups and Poincaré series of a moment-angle-complex $\mathcal Z(\mathcal K$) / Davis-Januzskiewicz space $DJ(\mathcal K)$ associated to a flag simplicial complex $\mathcal K$. In this note we revisit these results and interpret them as polynomial bounds on the face numbers of an arbitrary simplicial flag complex.
The connectivity of graphs of simplicial and polytopal complexes is a classical subject going back at least to Steinitz, and the topic has since been studied by many authors, including Balinski, Barnette, Athanasiadis and Bjorner. In this note, we provide a unifying approach which allows us to obtain more general results. Moreover, we provide a relation to commutative algebra by relating connectivity problems to graded Betti numbers of the associated Stanley--Reisner rings.
A $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complex is called balanced if its underlying graph admits a proper $d$-coloring. We show that many well-known face enumeration results have natural balanced analogs (or at least conjectural analogs). Specifically, we prove the balanced analog of the celebrated Lower Bound Theorem for pseudomanifolds and characterize the case of equality; we introduce and characterize the balanced analog of the Walkup class; we propose the balanced analog of the Generalized Lower Bound Conjecture and establish some related results. We close with constructions of balanced manifol…
Given a finite CAT(0) cubical complex, we define a flag simplicial complex associated to it, called the crossing complex. We show that the crossing complex holds much of the combinatorial information of the original cubical complex: for example, hyperplanes in the cubical complex correspond to vertex links in the crossing complex, and the crossing complex is balanced if and only if the cubical complex is cubically balanced. The most significant result is that the sets of $f$-vectors of CAT(0) cubical complexes and flag simplicial complexes are equal, up to an invertible linear transformation.
We prove that the family of facets of a pure simplicial complex of dimension up to three satisfies the Erdős-Ko-Rado property whenever it is flag and has no boundary ridges. We conjecture the same to be true in arbitrary dimension and give evidence for this conjecture. Our motivation is that complexes with these two properties include flag pseudo-manifolds and cluster complexes.
Mogami introduced in 1995 a large class of triangulated 3-dimensional pseudomanifolds, henceforth called "Mogami pseudomanifolds". He proved an exponential bound for the size of this class in terms of the number of tetrahedra. The question of whether all 3-balls are Mogami has remained open since, a positive answer would imply a much-desired exponential upper bound for the total number of 3-balls (and 3-spheres) with N tetrahedra. Here we provide a negative answer: many 3-balls are not Mogami. On the way to this result, we characterize the Mogami property in terms of nuclei, in the sense of Co…
The $γ$-vector is an important enumerative invariant of a flag simplicial homology sphere. It has been conjectured by Gal that this vector is nonnegative for every such sphere $Δ$ and by Reiner, Postnikov and Williams that it increases when $Δ$ is replaced by any flag simplicial homology sphere which geometrically subdivides $Δ$. Using the nonnegativity of the $γ$-vector in dimension 3, proved by Davis and Okun, as well as Stanley's theory of simplicial subdivisions and local $h$-vectors, the latter conjecture is confirmed in this paper in dimensions 3 and 4.
A notion of an $i$-banner simplicial complex is introduced. For various values of $i$, these complexes interpolate between the class of flag complexes and the class of all simplicial complexes. Examples of simplicial spheres of an arbitrary dimension that are $(i+1)$-banner but not $i$-banner are constructed. It is shown that several theorems for flag complexes have appropriate $i$-banner analogues. Among them are (1) the codimension-$(i+j-1)$ skeleton of an $i$-banner homology sphere $Δ$ is $2(i+j)$-Cohen--Macaulay for all $0\leq j\leq \dimΔ+1-i$, and (2) for every $i$-banner simplicial compl…
In the focus of this paper is the operation of edge contraction. One can show that simplicial 3-polytope is flag iff contraction of any its edge gives simplicial 3-polytope. Our main result states that any flag simplicial 3-polytope can be reduced to octahedron by sequence of edge contractions. Using this operation we introduce a partial order on the set of flag simplicial 3-polytopes and study Hasse graph of corresponding poset. We estimate input and output degrees of vertices of this Hasse graph.
For any flag simplicial complex $Θ$ obtained by stellar subdividing the boundary of the cross polytope in edges, we define a flag simplicial complex $Γ(Θ)$ (dependent on the sequence of subdivisions) whose $f$-vector is the $γ$-vector of $Θ$. This proves that the $γ$-vector of any such simplicial complex satisfies the Frankl-Füredi-Kalai inequalities, partially solving a conjecture by Nevo and Petersen \cite{np}. We show that when $Θ$ is the dual simplicial complex to a nestohedron, and the sequence of subdivisions corresponds to a flag ordering as defined in \cite{ai}, that $Γ(Θ)$ is equal to…
In this note we construct a flag simplicial $3$-sphere $Δ$ with the following properties: - $Δ$ is not a suspension; - $Δ$ has no edge that can be contracted to obtain another flag sphere; - The only equators (induced subcomplexes which are spheres of codimension $1$) of $Δ$ are vertex links. Our construction has $12$ vertices, the minimum number of vertices such a simplicial complex can have. This answers a question posed by Chudnovsky and Nevo.
We study the equivariant flag $f$-vector and equivariant flag $h$-vector of a balanced relative simplicial complex with respect to a group action. When the complex satisfies Serre's condition $(S_{\ell}),$ we show that the equivariant flag $h$-vector, the equivariant $h$-vector, and the equivariant $f$-vector satisfy several inequalities. We apply these results to the study of $P$-partitions of double posets, and weak colorings of mixed graphs.
Refining a basic result of Alexander, we show that two flag simplicial complexes are piecewise linearly homeomorphic if and only if they can be connected by a sequence of flag complexes, each obtained from the previous one by either an edge subdivision or its inverse. For flag spheres we pose new conjectures on their combinatorial structure forced by their face numbers, analogous to the extremal examples in the upper and lower bound theorems for simplicial spheres. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm to test the conjectures searches through the entire space of flag PL spheres of any given …
In this paper, we investigate a relation between finite graphs, simplicial flag complexes and right-angled Coxeter groups, and we provide a class of reconstructible finite graphs. We show that if $Γ$ is a finite graph which is the 1-skeleton of some simplicial flag complex $L$ which is a homology manifold of dimension $n \ge 1$, then the graph $Γ$ is reconstructible.
Strong placement games (SP-games) are a class of combinatorial games whose structure allows one to describe the game via simplicial complexes. A natural question is whether well-known invariants of combinatorial games, such as "game value", appear as invariants of the simplicial complexes. This paper is the first step in that direction. We show that every simplicial complex encodes a certain type of SP-game (called an "invariant SP-game") whose ruleset is independent of the board it is played on. We also show that in the class of SP-games isomorphic simplicial complexes correspond to isomorphi…
Let $Δ$ be a $d$-dimensional normal pseudomanifold, $d \ge 3.$ A relative lower bound for the number of edges in $Δ$ is that $g_2$ of $Δ$ is at least $g_2$ of the link of any vertex. When this inequality is sharp $Δ$ has relatively minimal $g_2$. For example, whenever the one-skeleton of $Δ$ equals the one-skeleton of the star of a vertex, then $Δ$ has relatively minimal $g_2.$ Subdividing a facet in such an example also gives a complex with relatively minimal $g_2.$ We prove that in dimension three these are the only examples. As an application we determine the combinatorial and topological t…
We study degree sequences for simplicial posets and polyhedral complexes, generalizing the well-studied graphical degree sequences. Here we extend the more common generalization of vertex-to-facet degree sequences by considering arbitrary face-to-flag degree sequences. In particular, these may be viewed as natural refinements of the flag f-vector of the poset. We investigate properties and relations of these generalized degree sequences, proving linear relations between flag degree sequences in terms of the composition of rank jumps of the flag. As a corollary, we recover an f-vector inequalit…
Starting from an unpublished conjecture of Kalai and from a conjecture of Eisenbud, Green and Harris, we study several problems relating h-vectors of Cohen-Macaulay, flag simplicial complexes and face vectors of simplicial complexes.
The diameter of a strongly connected $d$-dimensional simplicial complex is the diameter of its dual graph. We provide a probabilistic proof of the existence of $d$-dimensional simplicial complexes with diameter $ (\frac{1}{d \cdot d!} - (\log n)^{-ε}) n^d$. Up to the first order term, this is the best possible lower bound for the maximum diameter of a $d$-complex on $n$ vertices as a simple volume argument shows that the diameter of a $d$-dimensional simplicial complex is at most $ \frac{1}{d} \binom{n}{d}$. We also find the right first-order asymptotics for the maximum diameter of a $d$-pseud…
We present examples of flag homology spheres whose $γ$-vectors satisfy the Kruskal-Katona inequalities. This includes several families of well-studied simplicial complexes, including Coxeter complexes and the simplicial complexes dual to the associahedron and to the cyclohedron. In these cases, we construct explicit simplicial complexes whose $f$-vectors are the $γ$-vectors in question. In another direction, we show that if a flag $(d-1)$-sphere has at most $2d+2$ vertices its $γ$-vector satisfies the Kruskal-Katona inequalities. We conjecture that if $Δ$ is a flag homology sphere then $γ(Δ)$ …
We study the problem of maximizing Betti numbers of simplicial complexes. We prove an upper bound of 1.32^n for the sum of Betti numbers of any n-vertex flag complex and 1.25^n for the independence complex of a triangle-free graph. These findings imply upper bounds for the Betti numbers of various related classes of spaces, including the neighbourhood complex of a graph. We also make some related observations.
A flag complex can be defined as a simplicial complex whose simplices correspond to complete subgraphs of its 1-skeleton taken as a graph. In this article, by introducing the notion of s-dismantlability, we shall define the s-homotopy type of a graph and show in particular that two finite graphs have the same s-homotopy type if, and only if, the two flag complexes determined by these graphs have the same simplicial simple-homotopy type (Theorem 2.10, part 1). This result is closely related to similar results established by Barmak and Minian (Adv. in Math., 218 (2008), 87-104) in the framework …
The Flag Complex Conjecture of Charney and Davis states that for a simplicial complex $S$ which triangulates a $(2n - 1)$-generalized homology sphere as a flag complex one has $(-1)^n \sum_{σ\in S} \left(\frac{-1}{2}\right)^{\dimσ+ 1} \ge 0$, where the sum runs over all simplices $σ$ of $S$ (including the empty simplex). Interpreting the $1$-skeleta of $σ\in S$ as graphs of Coxeter groups, we present a stronger version of this conjecture, and prove the equivalence of the latter to the Flag Complex Conjecture.
The Euler characteristic, thought of as a function that assigns a numerical value to every finite simplicial complex, is locally determined in both a combinatorial sense and a geometric sense. In this note we show that not every function that assigns a numerical value to every finite simplicial complex via a linear combination of the numbers of simplices in each dimension is locally determined in either sense. In particular, the Charney-Davis quantity $λ(L)$ is not locally determined in either sense if it is defined on a set of simplicial complexes that includes all flag spheres of a given odd…
We describe a construction for d-polytopes generalising the well known stacking operation. The construction is applied to produce 2-simplicial and 2-simple 4-polytopes with g_2=0 on any number of n >= 13 vertices. In particular, this implies that the ray l_1, described by Bayer (1987), is fully contained in the convex hull of all flag vectors of 4-polytopes. Especially interesting examples on 9, 10 and 11 vertices are presented.

The enumerative theory of simplicial subdivisions (triangulations) of simplicial complexes was developed by Stanley in order to understand the effect of such subdivisions on the $h$-vector of a simplicial complex. A key role there is played by the concept of a local $h$-vector. This paper surveys some of the highlights of this theory and some recent developments, concerning subdivisions of flag homology spheres and their $γ$-vectors. Several interesting examples and open problems are discussed.
A colored complex of type $\mathbf{a} = (a_1, \dots, a_n)$ is a simplicial complex $Δ$ on a vertex set $V$, together with an ordered partition $(V_1, \dots, V_n)$ of $V$, such that every face $F$ of $Δ$ satisfies $|F \cap V_i| \leq a_i$. For each $\mathbf{b} = (b_1, \dots, b_n) \leq \mathbf{a}$, let $f_{\mathbf{b}}$ be the number of faces $F$ of $Δ$ such that $|F \cap V_i| = b_i$. The array of integers $\{f_{\mathbf{b}}\}_{\mathbf{b} \leq \mathbf{a}}$ is called the fine $f$-vector of $Δ$, and it is a refinement of the $f$-vector of $Δ$. In this paper, we generalize the notion of Macaulay repre…
We resolve a conjecture of Kalai asserting that the $g_2$-number of any simplicial complex $Δ$ that represents a connected normal pseudomanifold of dimension $d\geq 3$ is at least as large as ${d+2 \choose 2}m(Δ)$, where $m(Δ)$ denotes the minimum number of generators of the fundamental group of $Δ$. Furthermore, we prove that a weaker bound, $h_2(Δ)\geq {d+1 \choose 2}m(Δ)$, applies to any $d$-dimensional pure simplicial poset $Δ$ all of whose faces of co-dimension $\geq 2$ have connected links. This generalizes a result of Klee. Finally, for a pure relative simplicial poset $Ψ$ all of whose …
If $K$ is a simplicial complex on $m$ vertices the flagification of $K$ is the minimal flag complex $K^f$ on the same vertex set that contains $K$. Letting $L$ be the set of vertices, there is a sequence of simplicial inclusions $L\to K\to K^f$. This induces a sequence of maps of polyhedral products $(\underline X,\underline A)^L\stackrel g\longrightarrow(\underline X,\underline A)^K\stackrel f\longrightarrow (\underline X,\underline A)^{K^f}$. We show that $Ωf$ and $Ωf\circΩg$ have right homotopy inverses and draw consequences. For a flag complex $K$ the polyhedral product of the form $(\unde…
Directed graphs are ubiquitous models for networks, and topological spaces they generate, such as the directed flag complex, have become useful objects in applied topology. The simplices are formed from directed cliques. We extend Atkin's theory of $q$-connectivity to the case of directed simplices. This results in a preorder where simplices are related by sequences of simplices that share a $q$-face with respect to directions specified by chosen face maps. We leverage the Alexandroff equivalence between preorders and topological spaces to introduce a new class of topological spaces for direct…
We show that the $γ$-vector of the order complex of any polytope is the f-vector of a balanced simplicial complex. This is done by proving this statement for a subclass of Stanley's S-shellable spheres which includes all polytopes. The proof shows that certain parts of the cd-index, when specializing $c=1$ and considering the resulted polynomial in $d$, are the f-polynomials of simplicial complexes that can be colored with "few" colors. We conjecture that the cd-index of a regular CW-sphere is itself the flag f-vector of a colored simplicial complex in a certain sense.
We introduce the notion of k-hyperclique complexes, i.e., the largest simplicial complexes on the set [n] with a fixed k-skeleton. These simplicial complexes are a higher-dimensional analogue of clique (or flag) complexes (case k=2) and they are a rich new class of simplicial complexes. We show that Dirac's theorem on chordal graphs has a higher-dimensional analogue in which graphs and clique complexes get replaced, respectively, by simplicial matroids and k-hyperclique complexes. We prove also a higher-dimensional analogue of Stanley's reformulation of Dirac's theorem on chordal graphs.
This paper continues investigation of the class of flag simple polytopes called 2-truncated cubes. It is an extended version of the short note Volodin (2012). A 2-truncated cube is a polytope obtained from a cube by sequence of truncations of codimension 2 faces. Constructed uniquely defined function which maps any 2-truncated cube to a flag simplicial complex with $f$-vector equal to $γ$-vector of the polytope. As a corollary we obtain that $γ$-vectors of 2-truncated cubes satisfy Frankl-Furedi-Kalai inequalities.
We consider geometric and computational measures of complexity for sets of integer vectors, asking for a qualitative difference between $f$-vectors of simplicial and general $d$-polytopes, as well as flag $f$-vectors of $d$-polytopes and regular CW $(d-1)$-spheres, for $d\ge 4$.
This paper is concerned with lower bounds for the connectivity of graphs (one-dimensional skeleta) of triangulations of compact manifolds. We introduce a structural invariant b_M for simplicial d-manifolds M taking values in the range 0 <= b_M <= d-1. The main result is that b_M influences connectivity in the following way: The graph of a d-dimensional simplicial compact manifold M is (2d - b_M)-connected. The parameter b_M has the property that b_M = 0 if the complex M is flag. Hence, our result interpolates between Barnette's theorem (1982) that all d-manifold graphs are (d+1)-connected and …
We study the chromatic quasisymmetric class function of a linearized combinatorial Hopf monoid. Given a linearized combinatorial Hopf monoid $H$, and an $H$-structure $h$ on a set $N$, there are proper colorings of $h$, generalizing graph colorings and poset partitions. We show that the automorphism group of $h$ acts on the set of proper colorings. The chromatic quasisymmetric class function enumerates the fixed points of this action, weighting each coloring with a monomial. For the Hopf monoid of graphs this invariant generalizes Stanley's chromatic symmetric function and specializes to the o…
For a property $\cal P$ of simplicial complexes, a simplicial complex $Γ$ is an obstruction to $\cal P$ if $Γ$ itself does not satisfy $\cal P$ but all of its proper restrictions satisfy $\cal P$. In this paper, we determine all obstructions to shellability of dimension $\le 2$, refining the previous work by Wachs. As a consequence we obtain that the set of obstructions to shellability, that to partitionability and that to sequential Cohen-Macaulayness all coincide for dimensions $\le 2$. We also show that these three sets of obstructions coincide in the class of flag complexes. These results …
Given any finite simplicial complex Δ, we show how to construct a new simplicial complex Δ_χ that is balanced and vertex decomposable. Moreover, we show that the h-vector of the simplicial complex Δ_χ is precisely the f-vector, denoted f(Δ), of the original complex Δ. We deduce this result by relating f(Δ) with the graded Betti numbers of the Alexander dual of Δ_χ. Our construction generalizes the "whiskering" construction of Villarreal, and Cook and Nagel. As a corollary of our work, we add a new equivalent statement to a theorem of Björner, Frankl, and Stanley that classifies the f-vectors o…
In their paper proving the Hirsch bound for flag normal simplicial complexes (Math. Oper.~Res.~2014) Adiprasito and Benedetti define the notion of~\emph{combinatorial segment}. The study of the maximal length of these objects provides the upper bound~$O(n2^d)$ for the diameter of any normal pure simplicial complex of dimension~$d$ with~$n$ vertices, and the Hirsch bound $n-d$ if the complexes are, moreover, flag. In the present article, we propose a formulation of combinatorial segments which is equivalent but more local, by introducing the notions of monotonicity and conservativeness of dual …
