We characterize weak* closed unital vector spaces of operators on a Hilbert space $H$. More precisely, we first show that an operator system, which is the dual of an operator space, can be represented completely isometrically and weak* homeomorphically as a weak* closed operator subsystem of $B(H)$. An analogous result is proved for unital operator spaces. Finally, we give some somewhat surprising examples of dual unital operator spaces.
We give some new characterizations of unitaries, isometries, unital operator spaces, unital function spaces, operator systems, C*-algebras, and related objects. These characterizations only employ the vector space and operator space structure.
Gelfand-Naimark duality (Commutative $C^*$-algebras $\equiv$ Locally compact Hausdorff spaces) is extended to $C^*$-algebras $\equiv$ Quotient maps on locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Using this duality, we give for an \emph{arbitrary} bounded operator on a complex Hilbert space of several dimensions, a functional calculus and the existence theorem for nontrivial invariant subspace.
This work is motivated by Radulescu's result on the comparison of C*-tensor norms on C*(F_n) x C*(F_n). For unital C*-algebras A and B, there are natural inclusions of A and B into their unital free product, their maximal tensor product and their minimal tensor product. These inclusions define three operator system structures on the internal sum A+B, the first of which we identify as the coproduct of A and B in the category of operator systems. Partly using ideas from quantum entanglement theory, we prove various interrelations between these three operator systems. As an application, the prese…
In this article, we give an abstract characterization of the ``identity'' of an operator space $V$ by looking at a quantity $n_{cb}(V,u)$ which is defined in analogue to a well-known quantity in Banach space theory. More precisely, we show that there exists a complete isometry from $V$ to some $\mathcal{L}(H)$ sending $u$ to ${\rm id}_H$ if and only if $n_{cb}(V,u) =1$. We will use it to give an abstract characterization of operator systems. Moreover, we will show that if $V$ is a unital operator space and $W$ is a proper complete $M$-ideal, then $V/W$ is also a unital operator space. As a con…
Arveson's extension theorem guarantees that every completely positive map defined on an operator system can be extended to a completely positive map defined on the whole C*-algebra containing it. An analogous statement where complete positivity is replaced by positivity is known to be false. A natural question is whether extendibility could still hold for positive maps satisfying stronger conditions, such as being unital and norm 1. Here we provide three counterexamples showing that positive norm-one unital maps defined on an operator subsystem of a matrix algebra cannot be extended to a posit…
The study of open quantum systems relies on the notion of unital completely positive semigroups on $C^*$-algebras representing physical systems. The natural generalisation would be to consider the unital completely positive semigroups on operator systems. We show that any continuous unital completely positive semigroup on matricial system can be extended to a semigroup on a finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebra, which is an injective envelope of the matricial system. In case the semigroup is invertible, this extension is unique.
We will give an abstract characterization of an arbitrary self-adjoint weak$^*$-closed subspace of $\mathcal{L}(H)$ (equipped with the induced matrix norm, the induced matrix cone and the induced weak$^*$-topology). In order to do this, we obtain a matrix analogues of a result of Bonsall for $^*$-operator spaces equipped with closed matrix cones. On our way, we observe that for a $^*$-vector $X$ equipped with a matrix cone (in particular, when $X$ is an operator system or the dual space of an operator system), a linear map $ϕ:X\to M_n$ is completely positive if and only if linear functional $[…
Gelfand duality between unital commutative C*-algebras and Compact Hausdorff spaces is extended to all unital C*-algebras, where the dual objects are what we call compact Hausdorff quantum spaces. We apply this result to obtain, a characterization of unitary groups of C*-algebras, and, for arbitrary bounded Hilbert space operators, (i) A spectral theorem cum continuous functional calculus, and (ii) A proof of the general Invariant Subspace Theorem. Also described is a nonabelian generalization of Pontryagin duality of abelian locally compact groups.
Given a unital inductive limit of C*-algebras for which each C*-algebra of the inductive sequence comes equipped with a compact quantum metric of Rieffel, we produce sufficient conditions to build a compact quantum metric on the inductive limit from the quantum metrics on the inductive sequence by utilizing the completeness of the dual Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity of Latremoliere on compact quantum metric spaces. This allows us to place new quantum metrics on all unital AF algebras that extend our previous work with Latremoliere on unital AF algebras with faithful tracial state. As a consequen…
The present paper is a sequel to our paper "Metric characterization of isometries and of unital operator spaces and systems". We characterize certain common objects in the theory of operator spaces (unitaries, unital operator spaces, operator systems, operator algebras, and so on), in terms which are purely linear-metric, by which we mean that they only use the vector space structure of the space and its matrix norms. In the last part we give some characterizations of operator algebras (which are not linear-metric in our strict sense described in the paper).
We study the quantum ($C^*$) convexity structure of normalized positive operator valued measures (POVMs) on measurable spaces. In particular, it is seen that unlike extreme points under classical convexity, $C^*$-extreme points of normalized POVMs on countable spaces (in particular for finite sets) are always spectral measures (normalized projection valued measures). More generally it is shown that atomic $C^*$-extreme points are spectral. A Krein-Milman type theorem for POVMs has also been proved. As an application it is shown that a map on any commutative unital $C^*$-algebra with countable …
The present article is a review of recent developments concerning the notion of Følner sequences both in operator theory and operator algebras. We also give a new direct proof that any essentially normal operator has an increasing Følner sequence $\{P_n\}$ of non-zero finite rank projections that strongly converges to 1. The proof is based on Brown-Douglas-Fillmore theory. We use Følner sequences to analyze the class of finite operators introduced by Williams in 1970. In the second part of this article we examine a procedure of approximating any amenable trace on a unital and separable C*-alge…
We construct projective limit of projective sequence in the following categories: Archimedean order unit spaces with unital positive maps and operator systems with unital completely positive maps. We prove that inductive limit and projective limit in these categories are in duality, provided that the dual objects remain in the same categories and the maps are order embeddings. We generalize a result of Choi and Effros on matrix-ordered duals of finite-dimensional operator systems to separable case.
This article is to give an infinite dimensional analogue of a result of Choi and Effros. We say that an (not necessarily unital) operator system $T$ is \emph{dualizable} if one can find an equivalent dual matrix norm on the dual space $T^*$ such that under this dual matrix norm and the canonical dual matrix cone, $T^*$ becomes a dual operator system. We show that "a complete" operator system $T$ is dualizable if and only if $M_\infty(T)^\mathrm{sa}$ satisfies a bounded decomposition property. In this case, $$\|f\|^\mathrm{d}:= \sup \big\{\big\|[f_{i,j}(x_{k,l})]\big\|: x\in M_n(T)^+; \|x\|\leq…
Let $A$ be a unital Banach algebra. We give a characterization of the left Banach $A$-modules $X$ for which there exists a commutative unital $C^*$-algebra $C(K)$, a linear isometry $i\colon X\to C(K)$, and a contractive unital homomorphism $θ\colon A\to C(K)$ such that $i(a\cdotp x) =θ(a)i(x)$ for any $a\in A, x\in X$. We then deduce a "commutative" version of the Christensen-Effros-Sinclair characterization of operator bimodules. In the last section of the paper, we prove a $w^*$-version of the latter characterization, which generalizes some previous work of Effros and Ruan.

We demonstrate new abstract characterizations for unital and non-unital operator spaces. We characterize unital operator spaces in terms of the cone of accretive operators (operators whose real part is positive). Defining the gauge of an operator $T \in B(H)$ to be $\|Re(T)_+\|$, we demonstrate an abstract characterization of operator spaces up to complete gauge-isometry. Both of these characterizations preserve the structure of the self-adjoint, positive, and accretive operators, as well as the operator norm. We show that an operator space with a given matrix ordering of positive or accretive…
Arveson's extension theorem asserts that B(H) is an injective object in the category of operator systems. Calling every self adjoint unital subspace of a unital *-algebra, a quasi operator system, we show that Arveson's theorem remains valid in the much larger category of quasi operator systems. This shows that Arveson's theorem as a non commutative extension of Hahn-Banach theorem, is of purely algebraic nature.
We describe how self-adjoint ordered operator spaces, also called non-unital operator systems in the literature, can be understood as $*$-vector spaces equipped with a matrix gauge structure. We explain how this perspective has several advantages over other notions of non-unital operator systems in the literature. In particular, the category of matrix gauge $*$-vector spaces includes injective objects and a Webster-Winkler-type duality theorem, both of which we show generally fail with other notions of non-unital operator systems. As applications, we characterize those subspaces of operator sy…
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be an infinite dimensional Hilbert space and $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ be the C*-algebra of all bounded linear operators on $\mathcal{H}$, equipped with the operator-norm. By improving the Brown-Pearcy construction, Terence Tao in 2018, extended the result of Popa [1981] which reads as : For each $0<\varepsilon\leq 1/2$, there exist $D,X \in \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ with $\|[D,X]-1_{\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})}\|\leq \varepsilon$ such that $\|D\|\|X\|=O\left(\log^5\frac{1}{\varepsilon}\right)$, where $[D,X]:= DX-XD$. In this paper, we show that Tao's result still holds for cer…
In a previous paper we showed how the main theorems characterizing operator algebras and operator modules, fit neatly into the framework of the `noncommutative Shilov boundary', and more particularly via the left multiplier operator algebra of an operator space. As well as giving new characterization theorems, the approach of that paper allowed many of the hypotheses of the earlier theorems to be eliminated. Recent progress of the author with Effros and Zarikian now enables weak*-versions of these characterization theorems. For example, we prove a result analogous to Sakai's famous characteriz…
In this paper, we study closed convex hulls of unitary orbits in various C$^*$-algebras. For unital C$^*$-algebras with real rank zero and a faithful tracial state determining equivalence of projections, a notion of majorization describes the closed convex hulls of unitary orbits for self-adjoint operators. Other notions of majorization are examined in these C$^*$-algebras. Combining these ideas with the Dixmier property, we demonstrate unital, infinite dimensional C$^*$-algebras of real rank zero and strict comparison of projections with respect to a faithful tracial state must be simple and …
We prove that two unital dual operator algebras A, B are stably isomorphic if and only if they are Delta-equivalent, if and only if they have completely isometric normal representations a, b on Hilbert spaces H, K respectively and there exists a ternary ring of operators M \subset B(H,K) such that a(A)=[M* b(B) M]^{-w^*} and b(B)=[M a(A) M*]^{-w^*}.
For every integer $d\ge 1$, there is a unital closed subalgebra $A_d\subset B(H)$ with similarity degree equal precisely to $d$, in the sense of our previous paper. This means that for any unital homomorphism $u\colon A_d\to B(H)$ we have $\|u\|_{cb} \le K\|u\|^d$ with $K>0$ independent of $u$, and the exponent $d$ in this estimate cannot be improved. The proof that the degree is larger than $d-1$ crucially uses an upper bound for the norms of certain Gaussian random matrices due to Haagerup and Thorbjørnsen. We also include several complements to our previous publications on the same subject.
Every unital nonselfadjoint operator algebra possesses canonical and functorial classes of faithful (even completely isometric) Hilbert space representations satisfying a double commutant theorem generalizing von Neumann's classical result. Examples and complementary results are given.
We prove that a large class of Paschke dual algebras of simple unital C*-algebras are $K_1$-injective. As a consequence, we obtain interesting $KK$-uniqueness theorems which generalize the Brown--Douglas--Fillmore essential codimension property.
Let $C^*(\cls)$ be the $C^*$ algebra generated by an operator system $\cls$ i.e. a unital $*$-closed subspace of a unital $C^*$ algebra $\cla$. We prove that any complete order isomorphism $\cli:\cls \raro \cls'$ between two such operator systems of matrix algebras has a unique extension to a $C^*$-isomorphism $\cli:C^*(\cls) \raro C^*(\cls')$. However, the same statement with more general operator systems of infinite dimensional $C^*$-algebra is false. As an application of this result, we characterise upto cocycle conjugacy the extreme points of unital completely positive maps on matrix algeb…
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a unital $C^{*}$-algebra. We consider Jordan $*$-homomorphisms on $C(X, \mathcal{A})$ and Jordan $*$-homomorphisms on $\operatorname{Lip}(X,\mathcal{A})$. More precisely, for any unital $C^{*}$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$, we prove that every Jordan $*$-homomorphism on $C(X, \mathcal{A})$ and every Jordan $*$-homomorphism on $\operatorname{Lip}(X,\mathcal{A})$ is represented as a weighted composition operator by using the irreducible representations of $\mathcal{A}$. In addition, when $\mathcal{A}_1$ and $\mathcal{A}_2$ are primitive $C^{*}$-algebras, we characterize the Jordan …
We prove that an operator system $\mathcal S$ is nuclear in the category of operator systems if and only if there exist nets of unital completely positive maps $ϕ_λ: \cl S \to M_{n_λ}$ and $ψ_λ: M_{n_λ} \to \cl S$ such that $ψ_λ\circ ϕ_λ$ converges to ${\rm id}_{\cl S}$ in the point-norm topology. Our proof is independent of the Choi-Effros-Kirchberg characterization of nuclear $C^*$-algebras and yields this characterization as a corollary. We give an example of a nuclear operator system that is not completely order isomorphic to a unital $C^*$-algebra.
Let $A$ be a separable, unital, simple C*-algebra with stable rank one. We show that every strictly positive, lower semicontinuous, affine function on the simplex of normalized quasitraces of $A$ is realized as the rank of an operator in the stabilization of $A$. Assuming moreover that $A$ has locally finite nuclear dimension, we deduce that $A$ is $\mathcal{Z}$-stable if and only if it has strict comparison of positive elements. In particular, the Toms-Winter conjecture holds for separable, unital, simple, approximately subhomogeneous C*-algebras with stable rank one.
A unital $C^*$-algebra is called $N$-subhomogeneous if its irreducible representations are finite dimensional with dimension at most $N$. We extend this notion to operator systems, replacing irreducible representations by boundary representations. This is done by considering the matrix state space associated with an operator system and identifying the boundary representations as absolute matrix extreme points. We show that two $N$-subhomogeneous operator systems are completely order equivalent if and only if they are $N$-order equivalent. Moreover, we show that a unital $N$-positive map into a…
We show that every operator system (and hence every unital operator algebra) has sufficiently many boundary representations to generate the C*-envelope.
We show that every free semigroup algebras has a (strongly) unique Banach space predual. We also provide a new simpler proof that a weak*-closed unital operator operator algebra containing a weak* dense subalgebra of compact operators has a unique Banach space predual.
We will investigate the norm closure of the unitary and similarity orbits of normal operators in unital, simple, purely infinite C*-algebras. An operator theoretic proof will be given to the classification of when two normal operators are approximately unitarily equivalent in said algebras with trivial K_1-group. Some upper and lower bounds for the distance between unitary orbits will be obtained based on these methods. In addition, a complete characterization of when one normal operator is in the closed similarity orbit of another normal operator will be given for unital, simple, purely infin…
We develop a matricial version of Rieffel's Gromov-Hausdorff distance for compact quantum metric spaces within the setting of operator systems and unital C*-algebras. Our approach yields a metric space of ``isometric'' unital complete order isomorphism classes of metrized operator systems which in many cases exhibits the same convergence properties as those in the quantum metric setting, as for example in Rieffel's approximation of the sphere by matrix algebras using Berezin quantization. Within the metric subspace of metrized unital C*-algebras we establish the convergence of sequences which …
We generalize the main theorem of Rieffel for Morita equivalence of W*-algebras to the case of unital dual operator algebras: two unital dual operator algebras A and B have completely isometric normal representations alpha, beta such that alpha(A) is the w*-closed span of M*beta(B)M and beta(B) is the w*-closed span of Malpha(A)M* for a ternary ring of operators M (i.e. a linear space M such that MM*M \subset M if and only if there exists an equivalence functor $F:_{A}M\to_{B}M$ which "extends" to a *-functor implementing an equivalence between the categories $_{A}DM$ and $_{B}DM.$ By $_{A}M$ …
Let $\mathscr{A}$ be a unital $C^*$-algebra and let $Φ: \mathscr{A} \to {\mathbb B}({\mathscr H})$ be a unital $n$-positive linear map between $C^*$-algebras for some $n \geq 3$. We show that $$\|Φ(AB)-Φ(A)Φ(B)\| \leq Δ(A,||\cdot||)\,Δ(B,||\cdot||)$$ for all operators $A, B \in \mathscr{A}$, where $Δ(C,\|\cdot\|)$ denotes the operator norm distance of $C$ from the scalar operators.
The Karcher mean on the cone $Ω$ of invertible positive elements of the $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{B}(E)$ of bounded operators on a Hilbert space $E$ has recently been extended to a contractive barycentric map on the space of $L^1$- probability measures on $Ω$. In this paper we first show that the barycenter satisfies the Karcher equation and then establish the uniqueness of the solution. Next we establish that the Karcher mean is real analytic in each of its coordinates, and use this fact to show that boththe Karcher mean and Karcher barycenter map exist and are unique on any unital $C^*$-algebr…
We show how to reduce free independence to tensor independence in the strong sense. We construct a suitable unital *-algebra of closed operators `affiliated' with a given unital *-algebra and call the associated closure `monotone'. Then we prove that monotone closed operators of the form $$ X'= \sum_{k=1}^{\infty}X(k)\bar{\otimes} p_{k}, X''=\sum_{k=1}^{\infty} p_{k}\bar{\otimes}X(k) $$ are free with respect to a tensor product state, where $X(k)$ are tensor independent copies of a random variable $X$ and $(p_{k})$ is a sequence of orthogonal projections. For unital free *-algebras, we constru…
Starting from an arbitrary endomorphism $α$ of a unital C*-algebra $A$ we construct a bigger C*-algebra $B$ and extend $α$ onto $B$ in such a way that the extended endomorphism $α$ has a unital kernel and a hereditary range, i.e. there exists a unique non-degenerate transfer operator for $(B,α)$, called the complete transfer operator. The pair $(B,α)$ is universal with respect to a suitable notion of a covariant representation and depends on a choice of an ideal in $A$. The construction enables a natural definition of the crossed product for arbitrary $α$.
Let B be a unital C*-subalgebra of a unital C*-algebra A, so that A/B is an abstract operator space. We show how to realize A/B as a concrete operator space by means of a completely contractive map from A into the algebra of operators on a Hilbert space, of the form a maps to [z, a] where z is a Hermitian unitary operator. We do not use Ruan's theorem concerning concrete realization of abstract operator spaces. Along the way we obtain corresponding results for abstract operator spaces of the form A/V where V is a closed subspace of A, and then for the more special cases in which V is a *-subsp…
Given a separable unital C*algebra $C$, let $E_n$ denote the Hilbert module equal to the completion of the Schwartz space of rapidly decreasing smooth functions from $R^n$ to $C$ equipped with the $C$-valued inner product given by integration. Let $B$ denote the space of all smooth functions with bounded derivatives from $R^n$ to $C$. For each $a$ in $B$, let $O(a)$ denote the pseudodifferential operator of symbol $a$. $O$ maps $B$ to $H$, the set of all adjointable operators on $E_n$ which have smooth orbit under the canonical action of the Heisenberg group. We construct a left inverse for $O…
We show that any order isomorphism between ordered structures of associative unital JB-subalgebras of JBW algebras is implemented naturally by a Jordan isomorphism. Consequently, JBW algebras are determined by the structure of their associative unital JB subalgebras. Further we show that in a similar way it is possible to reconstruct Jordan structure from the order structure of associative subalgebras endowed with an orthogonality relation. In case of abelian subalgebras of von Neuman algebra it is we shown that order isomorphisms of the structure of abelian C*-subalgebras that are well behave…
In this paper an automorphism of a unital C*-algebra is said to be /locally inner/ if on any element it agrees with some inner automorphism. We make a fairly complete study of local innerness in von Neumann algebras, incorporating comparison with the pointwise innerness of Haagerup-Stormer. On some von Neumann algebras, including all with separable predual, a locally inner automorphism must be inner. But a transfinitely recursive construction demonstrates that this is not true in general. As an application, we show that the diagonal sum descends to a well-defined map on the automorphism orbits…
We give a general formulation of Jensen's operator inequality for unital fields of positive linear mappings, and we consider different types of converse inequalities.
Let A be a unital simple separable C*-algebra with strict comparison of positive elements. We prove that the Cuntz semigroup of A is recovered functorially from the Murray-von Neumann semigroup and the tracial state space T(A) whenever the extreme boundary of T(A) is compact and of finite covering dimension. Combined with a result of Winter, we obtain Z \otimes A isomorphic to A whenever A moreover has locally finite decomposition rank. As a corollary, we confirm Elliott's classification conjecture under reasonably general hypotheses which, notably, do not require any inductive limit structure…
A well-known theorem of Paulsen says that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a unital operator algebra and $ϕ:\mathcal{A}\to B(\mathcal{H})$ is a unital completely bounded homomorphism, then $ϕ$ is similar to a completely contractive map $ϕ'$. Motivated by classification problems for Hilbert space contractions, we are interested in making the inverse $ϕ'^{-1}$ completely contractive as well whenever the map $ϕ$ has a completely bounded inverse. We show that there exist invertible operators $X$ and $Y$ such that the map $$ XaX^{-1}\mapsto Yϕ(a)Y^{-1} $$ is completely contractive and is "almost" isometric on a…
We study the closure of the unitary orbit of a given point in the non-commutative Choquet boundary of a unital operator space with respect to the topology of pointwise norm convergence. This may be described more extensively as the $\ast$-representations of the $\mathrm{C}^{\ast}$-envelope that are approximately unitarily equivalent to one that possesses the unique extension property. Although these $\ast$-representations do not necessarily have the unique extension property themselves, we show that their unital completely positive extensions display significant restrictions. When the underlyi…
