Defects change essentially not only electronic but also chemical properties of graphene being centers of its chemical activity. Their functionalization is a way to modify electronic and crystal structure of graphene which may be important for graphene-based nanoelectronics. Using hydrogen as an example, we have simulated a chemistry of imperfect graphene for a broad class of defects (Stone-Wales defects, bivacancy, nitrogen substitution impurity, and zigzag edges) by density functional calculations. We have studied also an effect of finite width of graphene nanoribbons on their chemical properties. It is shown that magnetism at graphene edges is fragile with respect to oxidation and, therefore, a chemical protection of the graphene edges may be required for application of graphene in spintronics. At the same time, hydrogenation of the Stone-Wales defects may be a perspective way to create magnetic carbon.
Experimental and theoretical results on chemical functionalization of graphene are reviewed. Using hydrogenated graphene as a model system, general principles of the chemical functionalization are formulated and discussed. It is shown that, as a rule, 100% coverage of graphene by complex functional groups (in contrast with hydrogen and fluorine) is unreachable. A possible destruction of graphene nanoribbons by fluorine is considered. The functionalization of infinite graphene and graphene nanoribbons by oxygen and by hydrofluoric acid is simulated step by step.
A new model for graphene, epitaxially grown on silicon carbide is proposed. Density functional theory modelling of epitaxial graphene functionalization by hydrogen, fluorine and phenyl groups has been performed with hydrogen and fluorine showing a high probability of cluster formation in high adatom concentration. It has also been shown that the clusterization of fluorine adatoms provides midgap states in formation due to significant flat distortion of graphene. The functionalization of epitaxial graphene using larger species (methyl and phenyl groups) renders cluster formation impossible, due…
We investigated theoretically the effect of covalent edge functionalization, with organic functional groups, on the electronic properties of graphene nanostructures and nano-junctions. Our analysis shows that functionalization can be designed to tune electron affinities and ionization potentials of graphene flakes, and to control the energy alignment of frontier orbitals in nanometer-wide graphene junctions. The stability of the proposed mechanism is discussed with respect to the functional groups, their number as well as the width of graphene nanostructures. The results of our work indicate t…
We investigate the functionalization of functional groups to graphene nanoribbons with zigzag and armchair edges using first principles calculations. We find that the formation energy for the configuration of the functional groups functionalized to the zigzag edge is ~0.2 eV per functional group lower than that to the armchair edge. The formation energy difference arises from a structural deformation on the armchair edge by the functionalization whereas there is no structural deformation on the zigzag edge. Selective functionalization on the zigzag edge takes place at a condition of the temper…
Using the ab initio pseudopotential density functional method, we investigate the functionalization of halogen molecules into graphene-based nanostructures with zigzag and armchair edges. We find that halogen molecules adsorb through chemisorption on the zigzag edge carbon atoms with a binding energy of ~1-5 eV and their adsorption on a perfect zigzag edge is preferred, in sharp contrast to physisorption on the armchair edge and elsewhere where they adsorb with a binding energy of ~0.07 eV. We suggest that our findings would be utilized for an approach to the separation of zigzag graphene nano…
Opening, in a controllable way, the energy gap in the electronic spectrum of graphene is necessary for many potential applications, including an efficient carbon-based transistor. We have shown that this can be achieved by chemical functionalization of bilayer graphene. Using various dopants, such as H, F, Cl, Br, OH, CN, CCH, NH2, COOH, and CH3 one can vary the gap smoothly between 0.64 and 3 eV and the state with the energy gap is stable corresponding to the lowest-energy configurations. The peculiarities of the structural properties of bilayer graphene in comparison with bulk graphite are d…
Using the density functional theory, we have demonstrated the chemical functionalization of semiconducting graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with Stone-Wales (SW) defects by carboxyl (COOH) groups. It is found that the geometrical structures and electronic properties of the GNRs changed significantly, and the electrical conductivity of the system could be considerably enhanced by mono-adsorption and double-adsorption of COOH, which sensitively depends upon the axial concentration of SW defects COOH pairs (SWDCPs). With the increase of the axial concentration of SWDCPs, the system would transform fro…
In this article, based on first-principles calculations, we systematically study functionalization induced diamonization of graphene bilayer and graphene-BN hybrid bilayer. With single-side functionalization, the diamondized structures are magnetic semiconductor. Interestingly, if both sides of the bilayer are functionalized, diamondization becomes spontaneous without a barrier. On the other hand, when the bottom layer of the bilayer graphene is replaced by a single hexagonal BN layer, the diamondized structure becomes nonmagnetic metal. The tunable electronic and magnetic properties pave new …
DFT calculation of various atomic species on graphene sheet is investigated as prototypes for formation of nano-structures on carbon nanotube (CNT) wall. We investigate computationally adsorption energies and adsorption sites on graphene sheet for a lot of atomic species including transition metals, noble metals, nitrogen and oxygen, using the DFT calculation as a prototype for CNT. The suitable atomic species can be chosen as each application from those results. The calculated results show us that Mo and Ru are bounded strongly on graphene sheet with large diffusion barrier energy. On the oth…
For the first time bis-functionalization of graphene employing two successive reduction and covalent bond formation steps are reported. Both bulk functionalization in solution and functionalization of individual sheets deposited on surfaces have been carried out. Whereas in the former case attacks from both sides of the basal plane are possible and can lead to strain-free architectures, in the latter case, retro-functionalizations can get important when the corresponding anion of the addend represents a sufficiently good leaving group.
The flexoelectric and electronic properties of zig-zag graphene nanoribbons are explored under mechanical bending using state of the art first principles calculations. A linear dependence of the bending induced out of plane polarization on the applied strain gradient is found. The inferior flexoelectric properties of graphene nanoribbons can be improved by more than two orders of magnitude by hydrogen and fluorine functionalization (CH and CF nanoribbons). A large out of plane flexoelectric effect is predicted for CF nanoribbons. The origin of this enhancement lies in the electro-negativity di…
Organic functionalization of graphene is successfully performed via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylide in the liquid phase. The comparison between 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone and N,N-dimethylformamide as dispersant solvents, and between sonication and homogenization as dispersion techniques, proves N,N-dimethylformamide and homogenization as the most effective choice. The functionalization of graphene nanosheets and reduced graphene oxide is confirmed using different techniques. Among them, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy allows to map the pyrrolidine ring of the azomethine ylide …
The stability, electronic and optical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene noncovalently functionalized with free-base tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) molecules is addressed by density functional theory calculations, including corrections to dispersive interactions. We study the TPP physisorption on 42 CNT species, particularly those with chiral indices ($n$,$m$), where $5 \leq n \leq 12$ and $0\leq m\leq n$. Our results show a quite strong $π$-$π$ interaction between TPP and the CNT surface, with binding energies ranging from 1.1 to 1.8 eV, where higher energies can be …
The covalent functionalization of graphene represents a main topic in the growing field of nano materials. The reductive exfoliation of graphite with concomitant functionalization of the respective graphenide intermediates provides a promising approach towards functional graphene derivatives. In this article, we present new insights into the reductive arylation of graphene. Graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) with varying stoichiometries have been used as starting materials. Based on the spectroscopic data obtained by scanning Raman microscopy (SRM) and thermogravimetric analysis coupled t…
An electrospun membrane for vascular stent coating made of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine and butyl methacrylate copolymer (MPC-co-BMA), also known as (PMB), reinforced with functionalized and nitrogen doped reduced graphene oxide (f-NrGO) is presented. This membrane due to the nitrogen doped reduced graphene oxide (NrGO) negative electric charge has the capacity to repeal low density lipoproteins (LDL), which under specific conditions are the main cause of atherosclerotic disease. The NrGO functionalization process is detailed, as it creates strong bonds between NrGO and PMB, avoidi…
Opening a band gap and realizing static valley control have been long sought after in graphenebased two-dimensional (2D) materials. Motivated by the recent success in synthesizing 2D materials passivated by Si-N layers, here, we propose two new graphene-based materials, 2D C2SiN and CSiN, via first-principles calculations. Monolayer C2SiN is metallic and realizes superconductivity at low temperatures. Monolayer CSiN enjoys excellent stability and mechanical property. It is a semiconductor with a ternary valley structure for electron carriers. Distinct from existing valleytronic platforms, thes…
Amorphous carbon films have been routinely used to enhance the preparation of frozen-hydrated transmission electron microscopy (TEM) samples, either in retaining protein concentration, providing mechanical stability or dissipating sample charge. However, strong background signal from the amorphous carbon support obstructs that of the sample, and the insulating properties of amorphous carbon films preclude any efficiency in dispersing charge. Graphene addresses the limitations of amorphous carbon. Graphene is a crystalline material with virtually no phase or amplitude contrast and unparalleled,…
While the basal plane of graphene is inert, defects in it are centers of chemical activity. An attractive application of such defects is towards controlled functionalization of graphene with foreign molecules. However, the interaction of the defects with reactive environment, such as ambient, decreases the efficiency of functionalization and makes it poorly controlled. Here, we report a novel approach to generate, monitor with time resolution, and functionalize the defects $\textit{in situ}$ without ever exposing them to the ambient. The defects are generated by an energetic Argon plasma and t…
Here we present an angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), x-ray absorption spec-troscopy (XAS), and density-functional theory (DFT) investigations of water and ammonia ad-sorption on graphene/Ni(111). Our results on graphene/Ni(111) reveal the existence of interface states, originating from the strong hybridization of the graphene π and spin-polarized Ni 3d valence band states. ARPES and XAS data of the H2O (NH3)/graphene/Ni(111) system give an information about the kind of interaction between adsorbed molecules and graphene on Ni(111). The presented experimental data are compared …
Covalently functionalizing mechanical exfoliated monolayer and bilayer graphenides with λ-iodanes led to the discovery that the monolayers supported on a SiO2 substrate are considerably more reactive than bilayers as demonstrated by statistical Raman spectroscopy/microscopy. Supported by DFT calculations we show that ditopic addend binding leads to much more stable products than the corresponding monotopic reactions due to much lower lattice strain of the reactions products. The chemical nature of the substrate (graphene versus SiO2) plays a crucial role.14858-14862.
Low-cost graphene sponge electrodes were functionalized with two-dimensional (2D) materials, i.e., borophene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), using a one-step, hydrothermal self-assembly method. Borophene and hBN-modified graphene sponge anode and N-doped graphene sponge cathode were employed for electrochemical degradation of model persistent contaminants of emerging concern in one-pass, flow through mode, and using low-conductivity supporting electrolyte. Functionalization of the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) coating with 2D materials led to specific modifications in the electrode electroca…
Graphene is a material of great potential in a broad range of applications, for each of which specific tuning of the materials properties is required. This can be achieved, for example, by covalent functionalization. We have exploited two protocols for surface grafting, either by diazonium salts or by nucleophilic exchange, to perform graphene covalent modification directly on a copper substrate, which is routinely used for the synthesis of the material, and investigated the difference in reactivity compared with other substrates. The successful functionalization was confirmed by Raman and sur…
The monolayer form of CVD graphene is imposing crucial challenges in characterization of the targeted covalent functionalization due to the low amount of grafting moieties on the surface, which in turn hampers drawing conclusions about reactivity-properties relationships. Due to the growing interest in chemically modified graphene new, reliable and non-destructive methods for its characterization are critically required. Herein we demonstrate the use of surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy for detection of characteristic vibration modes of species being grafted to the material eit…
Anchoring various functional groups to graphene is the most versatile approach for tailoring its functional properties. To date, one must use a special tunneling microscope for attaching a molecule at a specific position on the graphene with resolution better than several hundred nanometers, however, achieving this resolution is impossible on a large scale. We demonstrate for the first time that chemical functionalization can be achieved with nanometer resolution by introducing strain with nanometer scale modulation into a graphene layer. The spatial distribution of the strain has been achieve…
By using first-principles calculations, we investigated the effects of graphene/boron nitride (BN) encapsulation, surface functionalization by metallic elements (K, Al, Mg and typical transition metals) and molecules (tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and tetracyanoethylene (TCNE)) on the electronic properties of layered indium selenide (InSe). It was found that an opposite trend of charge transfer is possible for graphene (donor) and BN (acceptor), which is dramatically different from phosphorene where both graphene and BN play the same role (donor). For InSe/BN heterostructure, a change of the…
The production of multiple types of graphene, such as free standing, epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide and metals, graphene in solution, chemically grown graphene-like molecules, various graphene nanoribbons, and graphene oxide with different levels of reduction and various chemical composition, demonstrate the need for additional investigation beyond the basic principles of graphene functionalization for avoidance of occasionally contradictions between the predictions from first-principles simulations and experimental results. Herein, we discuss the current state of modeling of the differ…
Enhancement of the chemical activity of graphene is evidenced by first-principles modelling of chemisorption of the hydrogen, fluorine, oxygen and hydroxyl groups on strained graphene. For the case of negative strain or compression, chemisorption of the single hydrogen, fluorine or hydroxyl group is energetically more favourable than those of their pairs on different sublattices. This behaviour stabilizes the magnetism caused by the chemisorption being against its destruction by the pair formations. Initially flat, compressed graphene is shown to buckle spontaneously right after chemisorption …
Kane and Mele predicted that in presence of spin-orbit interaction graphene realizes the quantum spin Hall state. However, exceptionally weak intrinsic spin-orbit splitting in graphene ($\approx 10^{-5}$ eV) inhibits experimental observation of this topological insulating phase. To circumvent this problem, we propose a novel approach towards controlling spin-orbit interactions in graphene by means of covalent functionalization of graphene edges with functional groups containing heavy elements. Proof-of-concept first-principles calculations show that very strong spin-orbit coupling can be induc…
To achieve high thermal conductivity (k) of polymer graphene nanocomposites, it is critically important to achieve efficient thermal coupling between graphene and its surrounding polymers through effective functionalization schemes. In this work, we demonstrate that edge-functionalization of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) can enable a larger enhancement of effective thermal conductivity in polymer-graphene nanocomposites, relative to basal plane functionalization. Effective thermal conductivity for edge case is predicted, through molecular dynamics simulations, to be up to 48% higher relative t…
Monolayer graphene was deposited on a Si wafer substrate decorated with SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and then exposed to aryl radicals that were generated in situ from their diazonium precursors. Using micro-Raman mapping, the aryl radicals were found to selectively react with the regions of graphene that covered the NPs. The enhanced chemical reactivity was attributed to the increased strain energy induced by the local mechanical deformation of the graphene.
Simulation of chemical activity of corrugated graphene within density functional theory predicts an enhancement of its chemical activity if the ratio of height of the corrugation (ripple) to its radius is larger than 0.07. Further growth of the curvature of the ripples results in appearance of midgap states which leads to an additional strong increase of chemisororption energy. These results open a way for tunable functionalization of graphene, namely, depending of curvature of the ripples one can provide both homogeneous (for small curvatures) and spot-like (for large curvatures) functionaliz…
In this paper, we have studied functionalization of 5-7 edge-reconstructed graphene nanoribbons by ab initio density functional calculations. Our studies show that hydrogenation at the reconstructed edges is favorable in contrast to the case of unreconstructed 6-6 zigzag edges, in agreement with previous theoretical results. Thermodynamical calculations reveal the relative stability of single and dihydrogenated edges under different temperatures and chemical potential of hydrogen gas. From phonon calculations, we find that the lowest optical phonon modes are hardened due to 5-7 edge reconstruc…
Based on a low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy study, we present a direct visualization of a cycloaddition reaction performed for some specific fluorinated maleimide molecules deposited on graphene. These studies showed that the cycloaddition reactions can be carried out on the basal plane of graphene, even when there are no pre-existing defects. In the course of covalently grafting the molecules to graphene, the sp2 conjugation of carbon atoms was broken and local sp3 bonds were created. The grafted molecules perturbed the graphene lattice, generating a standing-wave pattern with an…
Using ab initio density functional theory and quantum transport calculations based on nonequilibrium Green's function formalism we study structural, electronic, and transport properties of hydrogen-terminated short graphene nanoribbons (graphene flakes) and their functionalization with vanadium atoms. Rectangular graphene flakes are stable, having geometric and electronic structures quite similar to that of extended graphene nanoribbons. We show that a spin-polarized current can be produced by pure, hydrogenated rectangular graphene flakes by exploiting the spatially-separated edge states of t…
This review provides a critical overview of current developments on nanoelectronic biochemical sensors based on graphene. Composed of a single layer of conjugated carbon atoms, graphene has outstanding high carrier mobility and low intrinsic electrical noise, but a chemically inert surface. Surface functionalization is therefore crucial to unravel graphene sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of targeted analytes. To achieve optimal performance of graphene transistors for biochemical sensing, the tuning of the graphene surface properties via surface functionalization and passivation i…
A novel type of a graphene/porphyrin hybrid with a direct covalent linker between graphene and a nickel(II) tetraphenylporphyrin unit has successfully been synthesized by the reductive exfoliation/functionalization of potassium intercalated graphite as starting material. Moreover, we directly compared the reactivity of two structurally different porphyrin derivatives, namely, meso-NiTPP-N2+, with the diazonium group in 4-position of a peripheral phenyl ring and a novel \b{eta} NiTPP N2+ diazonium cation, where the diazonium group is directly attached to the \b{eta}-pyrrolic position of the 18 …
The edge-functionalization of graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) was carried out exploiting diazonium chemistry, aiming at the synthesis of edge decorated nanoparticles to be used as building blocks in the preparation of engineered nanostructured materials for enhanced heat transfer. Indeed, both phenol functionalized and dianiline-bridged GnP (GnP-OH and E-GnP, respectively) were assembled in nanopapers exploiting the formation of non-covalent and covalent molecular junctions, respectively. Molecular dynamics allowed to estimate the thermal conductance for the two different types of molecular junct…
Two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) holds great promise in electronic and optoelectronic applications owing to its unique structure and intriguing properties. The intrinsic defects such as sulfur vacancies (SVs) of MoS2 nanosheets are found to be detrimental to the device efficiency. To mitigate this problem, functionalization of 2D MoS2 using thiols has emerged as one of the key strategies for engineering defects. Herein, we demonstrate an approach to controllably engineer the SVs of chemically exfoliated MoS2 nanosheets using a series of substituted thiophenols in solution. The …
Strain effects on the stabilization of Al ad-atom on graphene oxide(GO)nanosheet as well as its implications for NH3 storage have been investigated using first-principles calculations. The binding energy of Al ad-atom on GO is found to be a false indicator of its stability.Tensile strain is found to be very effective in stabilizing the Al ad-atom on GO.It strengthens the C-O bonds through an enhanced charge transfer from C to O atoms. Interestingly,C-O bond strength is found to be the correct index for Al's stability.Optimally strained Al-functionalized GO binds up to 6 NH3 molecules, while it b…
Special point defects in semiconductors have been envisioned as suitable components for quantum-information technology. The identification of new deep centers in silicon that can be easily activated and controlled is a main target of the research in the field. Vacancy-related complexes are suitable to provide deep electronic levels but they are hard to control spatially. With the spirit of investigating solid state devices with intentional vacancy-related defects at controlled position, here we report on the functionalization of silicon vacancies by implanting Ge atoms through single-ion impla…
Based on the first-principles plane wave calculations, we studied the functionalization of the two-dimensional single layer MoS$_2$ structure via adatom adsorption and vacancy defect creation. Minimum energy adsorption sites are determined for sixteen different adatoms, each gives rise to diverse properties. Bare, single layer MoS$_2$, which is normally a nonmagnetic, direct band gap semiconductor, attains a net magnetic moment upon adsorption of specific transition metal atoms, as well as silicon and germanium atoms. The localized donor and acceptor states in the band gap expand the utilizati…
We have carried out the systematic study of quantum capacitance (C$_Q$) in functionalized graphene. The functionlization of graphene has been done by doping with different aliphatic and aromatic molecules and their radicals. Using density functional theory calculations, we first analyze the electronic band structure of the functionalized graphene and subsequently obtained the quantum capacitance in each system. We observed that the quantum capacitance can be enhanced by doping aliphatic and aromatic molecules and their radicals on graphene sheet, especially radical functionalized graphene show…
We present exemplary results of extensive studies of mechanical, electronic and transport properties of covalent functionalization of graphene monolayers (GML) with -NH2. We report new results of ab initio studies of covalent functionalization of GML with -NH2 groups up to 12.5% concentration. Our studies are performed in the framework of the density functional theory (DFT) and non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF). We discuss the stability (adsorption energy), elastic moduli, electronic structure, band gaps, and effective electron masses as a function of the density of the adsorbed molecule…
Carboxylic functionalization (-COOH groups) of carbon nanotubes is known to improve their dispersion properties and increase the electrical conductivity of carbon-nanotube - polymer nanocomposites. We have studied experimentally the effects of this type of functionalization on the thermal conductivity of the nanocomposites. It was found that while even small quantities of carbon nanotubes (~1 wt%) can increase the electrical conductivity, a larger loading fraction (~3 wt%) is required to enhance the thermal conductivity of nanocomposites. Functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes performed th…
High value of magnetic moment 0.08 emu/g at room temperature for SnO_2 nanoparticles (NPs) was observed. Surface functionalization with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) enhanced the saturation magnetic moment of NPs to an anomalously high value of 0.187 emu/g by altering the electronic configuration on NPs surface. Surface functionalization also suppressed photoluminescence (PL) peaks arising from oxygen defects around 2 eV and caused an increase in the intensities of two peaks near violet region (2.6 - 3 eV). PL studies under uniform external magnetic field enriched understanding of the role of…
Monitoring electronic properties of 2D materials is an essential step to open a way for applications such as electronic devices and sensors. From this perspective, Bernal bilayer graphene (BLG) is a fairly simple system that offers great possibilities for tuning electronic gap and charge carriers' mobility by selective functionalization (adsorptions of atoms or molecules). Here, we present a detailed numerical study of BLG electronic properties when two types of adsorption site are present simultaneously. We focus on realistic cases that could be realized experimentally with adsorbate concentr…
Realisation of practical spintronic devices relies on the ability to create and detect pure spin currents. In graphene-based spin valves this is usually achieved by injection of spin-polarized electrons from ferromagnetic contacts via a tunnel barrier, with Al2O3 and MgO used most widely as barrier materials. However, the requirement to make these barriers sufficiently thin often leads to pinholes and low contact resistances which in turn results in low spin injection efficiencies, typically 5% at room temperature, due to the so-called resistance mismatch problem. Here we demonstrate an altern…
We analyse the electronic and optical properties of graphene quantum dots (GQD) using accurate \textit{ab initio} many-body $GW$ and Bethe-Salpeter calculations. We show that most pristine GQD, including structures with irregular shapes, are characterized by dark low energy singlet excitations that quench fluorescence. We rationalizqe this property by exploiting the chiral symmetry of the low energy electronic states in graphene. Edge \textit{sp}$^3$ functionalization is shown to efficiently brighten these low lying excitations by distorting the \textit{sp}$^2$ backbone planar symmetry. Such f…
Covalent functionalization is a way to tune the electrochemical properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) monolayers. The wide band gap insulator h-BN may become metallic conductor upon functionalization with strong oxidants, such as fluorosulfonyl radicals ($\cdot$OSO$_2$F), as known since 1978 [N. Bartlett et al., J. Chem. Soc. Chem. Comm. {\bf 5}, 200 (1978)], with electrical conductivity of 1.5 S/cm [C. Shen et al., J. Solid State Chem. {\bf 147}, 74 (1999)] that greatly surpasses commercial cathode material Li$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ while retaining excellent ionic conductivity. Functionalized …
The functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with luminescent sp$^{3}$ defects has greatly improved their performance in applications such as quantum light sources and bioimaging. Here, we report the covalent functionalization of purified semiconducting SWCNTs with stable organic radicals (perchlorotriphenylmethyl, PTM) carrying a net spin. This model system allows us to use the near-infrared photoluminescence arising from the defect-localized exciton as a highly sensitive probe for the short-range interaction between the PTM radical and the SWCNT. Our results point toward …
A spectroscopic study of the amino functionalization of double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) is performed. Original experimental investigations by near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy at the C and O K-edges allow one to follow the efficiency of the chemistry during the different steps of covalent functionalization. Combined with Raman spectroscopy, the characterization gives a direct evidence of the grafting of amino-terminated molecules on the structural defects of the DWCNT external wall, whereas the internal wall does not undergo any change. Structural and mechanical inve…
Interfacial thermal transport between electrodes and polymer electrolytes can play a crucial role in the thermal management of solid-state lithium-ion batteries (SLIBs). Modifying the electrode surface with functional molecules can effectively increase the interfacial thermal conductance (ITC) between electrodes and polymers (e.g., electrolytes, separators); however, how they influence the interfacial thermal transport in SLIBs during charge/discharge remains unknown. In this work, we conduct molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the ITC between charged electrodes and solid-state …
Within the framework of stochastic reactive molecular dynamics simulations we develop a statistical method for generating fluorinated graphene structures with desirable fluorine distribution. Electronic transport properties of fluorinated graphene in a wide range of functionalization degree and system ordering are investigated. We have found a strong correlation between irregularities in fluorine distribution and electronic properties. In particular, proposed consideration allows us to reproduce both the experimentally observed electron-hole asymmetry in transport properties of fluorinated gra…
We investigate Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) of metal oxide on pristine and functionalized graphene. On pristine graphene, ALD coating can only actively grow on edges and defect sites, where dangling bonds or surface groups react with ALD precursors. This affords a simple method to decorate and probe single defect sites in graphene planes. We used perylene tetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) to functionalize graphene surface and selectively introduced densely packed surface groups on graphene. Uniform ultrathin ALD coating on PTCA graphene was achieved over large area. The functionalization method cou…
The controlled functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes with luminescent sp3-defects has created the potential to employ them as quantum-light sources in the near-infrared. For that, it is crucial to control their spectral diversity. The emission wavelength is determined by the binding configuration of the defects rather than the molecular structure of the attached groups. However, current functionalization methods produce a variety of binding configurations and thus emission wavelengths. We introduce a simple reaction protocol for the creation of only one type of luminescent defect…
