We initiate a systematic study of eigenvectors of random graphs. Whereas much is known about eigenvalues of graphs and how they reflect properties of the underlying graph, relatively little is known about the corresponding eigenvectors. Our main focus in this paper is on the nodal domains associated with the different eigenfunctions. In the analogous realm of Laplacians of Riemannian manifolds, nodal domains have been the subject of intensive research for well over a hundred years. Graphical nodal domains turn out to have interesting and unexpected properties. Our main theorem asserts that there is a constant c such that for almost every graph G, each eigenfunction of G has at most two large nodal domains, and in addition at most c exceptional vertices outside these primary domains. We also discuss variations of these questions and briefly report on some numerical experiments which, in particular, suggest that almost surely there are just two nodal domains and no exceptional vertices.
Consider an eigenvector of the adjacency matrix of a G(n, p) graph. A nodal domain is a connected component of the set of vertices where this eigenvector has a constant sign. It is known that with high probability, there are exactly two nodal domains for each eigenvector corresponding to a non-leading eigenvalue. We prove that with high probability, the sizes of these nodal domains are approximately equal to each other.
We generalize our former localization result about the principal Dirichlet eigenvector of the i.i.d. heavy-tailed random conductance Laplacian to the first $k$ eigenvectors. We overcome the complication that the higher eigenvectors have fluctuating signs by invoking the Bauer-Fike theorem to show that the $k$th eigenvector is close to the principal eigenvector of an auxiliary spectral problem.
We study how the spectral gap of the normalized Laplacian of a random graph changes when an edge is added to or removed from the graph. There are known examples of graphs where, perhaps counterintuitively, adding an edge can decrease the spectral gap, a phenomenon that is analogous to Braess's paradox in traffic networks. We show that this is often the case in random graphs in a strong sense. More precisely, we show that for typical instances of Erdős-Rényi random graphs $G(n,p)$ with constant edge density $p \in (0,1)$, the addition of a random edge will decrease the spectral gap with positiv…
Eigenvectors of large matrices (and graphs) play an essential role in combinatorics and theoretical computer science. The goal of this survey is to provide an up-to-date account on properties of eigenvectors when the matrix (or graph) is random.
We present a concentration result concerning random weighted projections in high dimensional spaces. As applications, we prove (1) New concentration inequalities for random quadratic forms; (2) The infinity norm of most unit eigenvectors of a random $\pm 1$ matrix is of order $O( \sqrt { \log n/n})$; (3) An estimate on the threshold for the local semi-circle law which is tight up to a $\sqrt {\log n}$ factor.
It is shown that the topologies and nestings of the zero and nodal sets of random (Gaussian) band limited functions have universal laws of distribution. Qualitative features of the supports of these distributions are determined. In particular the results apply to random monochromatic waves and to random real algebraic hyper-surfaces in projective space.
In this paper we prove the semi-circular law for the eigenvalues of regular random graph $G_{n,d}$ in the case $d\rightarrow \infty$, complementing a previous result of McKay for fixed $d$. We also obtain a upper bound on the infinity norm of eigenvectors of Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,p)$, answering a question raised by Dekel-Lee-Linial.
We examine the empirical distribution of the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of adjacency matrices of sparse regular random graphs. We find that when the degree sequence of the graph slowly increases to infinity with the number of vertices, the empirical spectral distribution converges to the semicircle law. Moreover, we prove concentration estimates on the number of eigenvalues over progressively smaller intervals. We also show that, with high probability, all the eigenvectors are delocalized.
Let $d\geq 3$ be fixed and $G$ be a large random $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices. We show that if $n$ is large enough then the entry distribution of every almost eigenvector $v$ of $G$ (with entry sum 0 and normalized to have length $\sqrt{n}$) is close to some Gaussian distribution $N(0,σ)$ in the weak topology where $0\leqσ\leq 1$. Our theorem holds even in the stronger sense when many entries are looked at simultaneously in small random neighborhoods of the graph. Furthermore, we also get the Gaussianity of the joint distribution of several almost eigenvectors if the corresponding eigenva…
We give, as $L$ grows to infinity, an explicit lower bound of order $L^{n/m}$ for the expected Betti numbers of the vanishing locus of a random linear combination of eigenvectors of $P$ with eigenvalues below $L$. Here, $P$ denotes an elliptic self-adjoint pseudo-differential operator of order $m\textgreater{}0$, bounded from below and acting on the sections of a Riemannian line bundle over a smooth closed $n$-dimensional manifold $M$ equipped with some Lebesgue measure. In fact, for every closed hypersurface $Σ$ of $\mathbb R^n$, we prove that there exists a positive constant $p\_Σ$ depending…
We prove that the bulk eigenvectors of sparse random matrices, i.e. the adjacency matrices of Erdős-Rényi graphs or random regular graphs, are asymptotically jointly normal, provided the averaged degree increases with the size of the graphs. Our methodology follows [6] by analyzing the eigenvector flow under Dyson Brownian motion, combining with an isotropic local law for Green's function. As an auxiliary result, we prove that for the eigenvector flow of Dyson Brownian motion with general initial data, the eigenvectors are asymptotically jointly normal in the direction $q$ after time $η_*\ll t…
Given an elliptic self-adjoint pseudo-differential operator $P$ bounded from below, acting on the sections of a Riemannian line bundle over a smooth closed manifold $M$ equipped with some Lebesgue measure, we estimate from above, as $L$ grows to infinity, the Betti numbers of the vanishing locus of a random section taken in the direct sum of the eigenspaces of $P$ with eigenvalues below $L$. These upper estimates follow from some equidistribution of the critical points of the restriction of a fixed Morse function to this vanishing locus. We then consider the examples of the Laplace-Beltrami an…
We show that real and imaginary parts of equivariant spherical harmonics on $S^3$ have almost surely a single nodal component. Moreover, if the degree of the spherical harmonic is $N$ and the equivariance degree is $m$, then the expected genus is proportional to $m \left(\frac{N^2 - m^2}{2} + N\right) $. Hence if $\frac{m}{N}= c $ for fixed $0 < c < 1$, the genus has order $N^3$.
Consider an n x n Hermitian random matrix with, above the diagonal, independent entries with alpha-stable symmetric distribution and 0 < alpha < 2. We establish new bounds on the rate of convergence of the empirical spectral distribution of this random matrix as n goes to infinity. When 1 < alpha < 2 we give vanishing bounds on the Lp-norm of the eigenvectors normalized to have unit L2-norm goes to 0. On the contrary, when 0 < alpha < 2/3, we prove that these eigenvectors are localized.
In this text, based on elementary computations, we provide a perturbative expansion of the coordinates of the eigenvectors of a Hermitian matrix of large size perturbed by a random matrix with small operator norm whose entries in the eigenvector basis of the first one are independent, centered, with a variance profile. This is done through a perturbative expansion of spectral measures associated to the state defined by a given vector.
We study the volume distribution of nodal domains of random band-limited functions on generic manifolds, and find that in the high energy limit a typical instance obeys a deterministic universal law, independent of the manifold. Some of the basic qualitative properties of this law, such as its support, monotonicity and continuity of the cumulative probability function, are established.
The purpose of this paper is to understand in more detail the shape of the eigenvectors of the random Schroedinger operator H = Delta+V. Here Delta is the discrete Laplacian and V is a random potential. It is well known that under certain assumptions on V the spectrum of this operator is pure point and its eigenvectors are exponentially localized; a phenomenon known as Anderson Localization. We restrict the operator to Z_n and consider the critical model H_n. We show that the shape of a uniformly chosen eigenvector of H_n converges in law to exp (-|t|/4 + Z_t/sqrt(2)), where Z is two-sided Bro…
Using the spectral multiplicities of the standard torus, we endow the Laplace eigenspaces with Gaussian probability measures. This induces a notion of random Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the torus ("arithmetic random waves"). We study the distribution of the nodal length of random eigenfunctions for large eigenvalues, and our primary result is that the asymptotics for the variance is non-universal, and is intimately related to the arithmetic of lattice points lying on a circle with radius corresponding to the energy.
We study the asymptotic properties of the conormal cycle of nodal sets associated to a random superposition of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold without boundary. In the case where the dimension is odd, we show that the expectation of the corresponding current of integration equidistributes on the fibers of the cotangent bundle. In the case where the dimension is even, we obtain an upper bound of lower order on the expectation. Using recent results of Alesker, we also deduce some properties on the asymptotic expectation of any smooth valuation including th…
We investigate the noise sensitivity of the top eigenvector of a sparse random symmetric matrix. Let $v$ be the top eigenvector of an $N\times N$ sparse random symmetric matrix with an average of $d$ non-zero centered entries per row. We resample $k$ randomly chosen entries of the matrix and obtain another realization of the random matrix with top eigenvector $v^{[k]}$. Building on recent results on sparse random matrices and a noise sensitivity analysis previously developed for Wigner matrices, we prove that, if $d\geq N^{2/9}$, with high probability, when $k \ll N^{5/3}$, the vectors $v$ and…
We describe extensive computational experiments on spectral properties of random objects - random cubic graphs, random planar triangulations, and Voronoi and Delaunay diagrams of random (uniformly distributed) point sets on the sphere). We look at bulk eigenvalue distribution, eigenvalue spacings, and locality properties of eigenvectors. We also look at the statistics of \emph{nodal domains} of eigenvectors on these graphs. In all cases we discover completely new (at least to this author) phenomena. The author has tried to refrain from making specific conjectures, inviting the reader, instead,…
We prove that an n by n random matrix G with independent entries is completely delocalized. Suppose the entries of G have zero means, variances uniformly bounded below, and a uniform tail decay of exponential type. Then with high probability all unit eigenvectors of G have all coordinates of magnitude O(n^{-1/2}), modulo logarithmic corrections. This comes a consequence of a new, geometric, approach to delocalization for random matrices.
We survey a decade worth of work pertaining to the nodal structures of random fields, with emphasis on the transformative techniques that shaped the field.
We obtain the limiting distribution of the nodal area of random Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on $\mathbb{T}^3= \mathbb{R}^3/ \mathbb{Z}^3$ ($3$-dimensional 'arithmetic random waves'). We prove that, as the multiplicity of the eigenspace goes to infinity, the nodal area converges to a universal, non-Gaussian, distribution. Universality follows from the equidistribution of lattice points on the sphere. Our arguments rely on the Wiener chaos expansion of the nodal area: we show that, analogous to (Marinucci, Peccati, Rossi and Wigman, 2016), the fluctuations are dominated by the fourth-order c…
We consider the ensemble of random Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on $\mathbb{T}^3=\mathbb{R}^3/\mathbb{Z}^3$ (`$3d$ arithmetic random waves'), and study the distribution of their nodal surface area. The expected area is proportional to the square root of the eigenvalue, or `energy', of the eigenfunction. We show that the nodal area variance obeys an asymptotic law. The resulting asymptotic formula is closely related to the angular distribution and correlations of lattice points lying on spheres.
We study the angles between the eigenvectors of a random $n\times n$ complex matrix $M$ with density $\propto \mathrm{e}^{-n\operatorname{Tr}V(M^*M)}$ and $x\mapsto V(x^2)$ convex. We prove that for unit eigenvectors $\mathbf{v},\mathbf{v}'$ associated with distinct eigenvalues $λ,λ'$ that are the closest to specified points $z,z'$ in the complex plane, the rescaled inner product $$\sqrt{n}(λ'-λ)\langle\mathbf{v},\mathbf{v}'\rangle$$ is uniformly sub-Gaussian, and give a more precise statement in the case of the Ginibre ensemble.
Consider a random regular graph of fixed degree $d$ with $n$ vertices. We study spectral properties of the adjacency matrix and of random Schrödinger operators on such a graph as $n$ tends to infinity. We prove that the integrated density of states on the graph converges to the integrated density of states on the infinite regular tree and we give uniform bounds on the rate of convergence. This allows to estimate the number of eigenvalues in intervals of size comparable to $\log_{d-1}^{-1}(n)$. Based on related estimates for the Green function we derive results about delocalization of eigenvect…
We study the correlation between the nodal length of random spherical harmonics and the measure of the boundary for excursion sets at any non-zero level. We show that the correlation is asymptotically zero, while the partial correlation after controlling for the random $L^2$-norm on the sphere of the eigenfunctions is asymptotically one.
We prove Moderate Deviation estimates for nodal lengths of random spherical harmonics both on the whole sphere and on shrinking spherical domains. Central Limit Theorems for the latter were recently established in Marinucci, Rossi and Wigman (2020) and Todino (2020) respectively. Our proofs are based on the combination of a Moderate Deviation Principle by Schulte and Thäle (2016) for sequences of random variables living in a fixed Wiener chaos with a well-known result based on the concept of exponential equivalence.
Improving upon results of Rudelson and Vershynin, we establish delocalization bounds for eigenvectors of independent-entry random matrices. In particular, we show that with high probability every eigenvector is delocalized, meaning any subset of its coordinates carries an appropriate proportion of its mass. Our results hold for random matrices with genuinely complex as well as real entries. In both cases, our bounds match numerical simulations, up to lower order terms, indicating the optimality of our results. As an application of our methods, we also establish delocalization bounds for normal…
Spectral quasi correlations are small sums of lattice points lying on the same circle; we show that, for generic integers representable as the sum of two squares, there are no spectral quasi-correlations. Moreover, we apply our result to study the nodal length of Arithmetic Random Waves at small scales: we show that there exists a phase-transition for the distribution of the nodal length at a logarithmic power above Planck-scale. Furthermore, we give strong evidence for the existence of an intermediate phase between Arithmetic and Berry's random waves.
Inspired by the recent work [MRW20], we prove that the nodal length of a planar random wave $B_{E}$, i.e. the length of its zero set $B_{E}^{-1}(0)$, is asymptotically equivalent, in the $L^{2}$-sense and in the high-frequency limit $E\rightarrow \infty$, to the integral of $H_{4}(B_{E}(x))$, $H_4$ being the fourth Hermite polynomial. As a straightforward consequence, we obtain a central limit theorem in Wasserstein distance. This complements recent findings in [NPR19] and [PV20].
Let $(M,g)$ be a smooth compact Riemannian surface with no boundary. Given a smooth vector field $V$ with finitely many zeroes on $M$, we study the distribution of the number of tangencies to $V$ of the nodal components of random band-limited functions. It is determined that in the high-energy limit, these obey a universal deterministic law, independent of the surface $M$ and the vector field $V$, that is supported precisely on the even integers $2 \mathbb{Z}_{> 0}$.
We study the nodal length of random toral Laplace eigenfunctions ("arithmetic random waves") restricted to decreasing domains ("shrinking balls"), all the way down to Planck scale. We find that, up to a natural scaling, for "generic" energies the variance of the restricted nodal length obeys the same asymptotic law as the total nodal length, and these are asymptotically fully correlated. This, among other things, allows for a statistical reconstruction of the full toral length based on partial information. One of the key novel ingredients of our work, borrowing from number theory, is the use o…
A theorem of Hoffman gives an upper bound on the independence ratio of regular graphs in terms of the minimum $λ_{\min}$ of the spectrum of the adjacency matrix. To complement this result we use random eigenvectors to gain lower bounds in the vertex-transitive case. For example, we prove that the independence ratio of a $3$-regular transitive graph is at least \[q=\frac{1}{2}-\frac{3}{4π}\arccos\biggl(\frac{1-λ_{\min}}{4}\biggr).\] The same bound holds for infinite transitive graphs: we construct factor of i.i.d. independent sets for which the probability that any given vertex is in the set is…
This note concerns the asymptotics of the expected total Betti numbers of the nodal set for an important class of Gaussian ensembles of random fields on Riemannian manifolds. By working with the limit random field defined on the Euclidean space we were able to obtain a locally precise asymptotic result, though due to the possible positive contribution of large percolating components this does not allow to infer a global result. As a by-product of our analysis, we refine the lower bound of Gayet-Welschinger for the important Kostlan ensemble of random polynomials and its generalisation to Kähle…
Let N(f) be a number of nodal domains of a random Gaussian spherical harmonic f of degree n. We prove that as n grows to infinity, the mean of N(f)/n^2 tends to a positive constant, and that N(f)/n^2 exponentially concentrates around that constant. This result is consistent with predictions made by Bogomolny and Schmit using a percolation-like model for nodal domains of random Gaussian plane waves.
We consider vectors of random variables, obtained by restricting the length of the nodal set of Berry's random wave model to a finite collection of (possibly overlapping) smooth compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}^2$. Our main result shows that, as the energy diverges to infinity and after an adequate normalisation, these random elements converge in distribution to a Gaussian vector, whose covariance structure reproduces that of a homogeneous independently scattered random measure. A by-product of our analysis is that, when restricted to rectangles, the dominant chaotic projection of the nodal leng…
In this survey we collect some of the recent results on the "nodal geometry" of random eigenfunctions on Riemannian surfaces. We focus on the asymptotic behavior, for high energy levels, of the nodal length of Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the torus (arithmetic random waves) and on the sphere (random spherical harmonics). We give some insight on both Berry's cancellation phenomenon and the nature of nodal length second order fluctuations (non-Gaussian on the torus and Gaussian on the sphere) in terms of chaotic components. Finally we consider the general case of monochromatic random waves…
The four moment theorem asserts, roughly speaking, that the joint distribution of a small number of eigenvalues of a Wigner random matrix (when measured at the scale of the mean eigenvalue spacing) depends only on the first four moments of the entries of the matrix. In this paper, we extend the four moment theorem to also cover the coefficients of the \emph{eigenvectors} of a Wigner random matrix. A similar result (with different hypotheses) has been proved recently by Knowles and Yin, using a different method. As an application, we prove some central limit theorems for these eigenvectors. In …
We study nodal component count of the following Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions: monochromatic random waves (MRW) on $\mathbb{R}^2$, arithmetic random waves (ARW) on $\mathbb{T}^2$ and random spherical harmonics (RSH) on $\mathbb{S}^2$. Exponential concentration for nodal component count of RSH on $\mathbb{S}^2$ and ARW on $\mathbb{T}^2$ were established by Nazarov-Sodin and Rozenshein respectively. We prove exponential concentration for nodal component count in the following three cases: MRW on growing Euclidean balls in $\mathbb{R}^2$; RSH and ARW on geodesic balls, in $\mathbb{S}^2$ and $\m…
We study the absolute continuity with respect to the Lebesgue measure of the distribution of the nodal volume associated with a smooth, non-degenerated and stationary Gaussian field $(f(x), {x \in \mathbb R^d})$. Under mild conditions, we prove that in dimension $d\geq 3$, the distribution of the nodal volume has an absolutely continuous component plus a possible singular part. This singular part is actually unavoidable baring in mind that some Gaussian processes have a positive probability to keep a constant sign on some compact domain. Our strategy mainly consists in proving closed Kac--Rice…
We study the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of random matrices with iid entries. Let $N$ be a random matrix with iid entries which have symmetric distribution. For each unit eigenvector $\mathbf{v}$ of $N$ our main results provide a small ball probability bound for linear combinations of the coordinates of $\mathbf{v}$. Our results generalize the works of Meehan and Nguyen as well as Touri and the second author for random symmetric matrices. Along the way, we provide an optimal estimate of the probability that an iid matrix has simple spectrum, improving a recent result of Ge. Our techniques als…
We analyze statistics for eigenvector entries of heavy-tailed random symmetric matrices (also called Lévy matrices) whose associated eigenvalues are sufficiently small. We show that the limiting law of any such entry is non-Gaussian, given by the product of a normal distribution with another random variable that depends on the location of the corresponding eigenvalue. Although the latter random variable is typically non-explicit, for the median eigenvector it is given by the inverse of a one-sided stable law. Moreover, we show that different entries of the same eigenvector are asymptotically i…
We test M. Berry's ansatz on nodal deficiency in presence of boundary. The square billiard is studied, where the high spectral degeneracies allow for the introduction of a Gaussian ensemble of random Laplace eigenfunctions ("boundary-adapted arithmetic random waves"). As a result of a precise asymptotic analysis, two terms in the asymptotic expansion of the expected nodal length are derived, in the high energy limit along a generic sequence of energy levels. It is found that the precise nodal deficiency or surplus of the nodal length depends on arithmetic properties of the energy levels, in an…
In these notes, we describe the recent progress in understanding the zero sets of two remarkable Gaussian random functions: the Gaussian entire function with invariant distribution of zeroes with respect to isometries of the complex plane, and Gaussian spherical harmonics on the two-dimensional sphere.
The asymptotic law for the expected nodal volume of random non-Gaussian monochromatic band-limited functions is determined in vast generality. Our methods combine microlocal analytic techniques and modern probability theory. A particularly challenging obstacle needed to overcome is the possible concentration of nodal volume on a small proportion of the manifold, requiring solutions in both disciplines. As for the fine aspects of the distribution of nodal volume, such as its variance, it is expected that the non-Gaussian monochromatic functions behave qualitatively differently compared to their…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the nodal lines for random spherical harmonics restricted to shrinking domains, in the 2-dimensional case: i.e., the length of the zero set $\mathcal{Z}_{\ell,r_\ell} := \mathcal{Z}^{B_{r_{\ell}}}(T_\ell)=\text{len}(\{x \in \mathbb{S}^2 \cap B_{r_\ell}: T_\ell(x)=0 \})$, where $B_{r_{\ell}}$ is the spherical cap of radius $r_\ell$. We show that the variance of the nodal length is logarithmic in the high energy limit; moreover, it is asymptotically fully equivalent, in the $L^2$-sense, to the "local sample trispectrum", namely, the integral on the ball …
We consider Berry's random planar wave model (1977) for a positive Laplace eigenvalue $E>0$, both in the real and complex case, and prove limit theorems for the nodal statistics associated with a smooth compact domain, in the high-energy limit ($E\to \infty$). Our main result is that both the nodal length (real case) and the number of nodal intersections (complex case) verify a Central Limit Theorem, which is in sharp contrast with the non-Gaussian behaviour observed for real and complex arithmetic random waves on the flat $2$-torus, see Marinucci et al. (2016) and Dalmao et al. (2016). Our fi…
We study random, symmetric $N \times N$ band matrices with a band of size $W$ and Bernoulli random variables as entries. This interpolates between nearest neighbour interaction $W = 1$ and Wigner matrices $W = N$. Eigenvectors are known to be localized for $W \ll N^{1/8}$, delocalized for $W \gg N^{4/5}$ and it is conjectured that the transition for the bulk occurs at $W \sim N^{1/2}$. Eigenvalues in the spectral edge change their behavior at $W \sim N^{5/6}$ but nothing is known about the associated eigenvectors. We show that up to $W \ll N^{5/7}$ any random matrix has with large probability …
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the nodal length of random $2d$-spherical harmonics $f_{\ell}$ of high degree $\ell \rightarrow\infty$, i.e. the length of their zero set $f_{\ell}^{-1}(0)$. It is found that the nodal lengths are asymptotically equivalent, in the $L^{2}$-sense, to the "sample trispectrum", i.e., the integral of $H_{4}(f_{\ell}(x))$, the fourth-order Hermite polynomial of the values of $f_{\ell}$. A particular by-product of this is a Quantitative Central Limit Theorem (in Wasserstein distance) for the nodal length, in the high energy limit.
In the present survey we present some of the recent results concerning the geometry of nodal lines of random Gaussian eigenfunctions (in case of spectral degeneracies) or wavepackets and related issues. The most fundamental example, where the spectral degeneracy allows us to consider random eigenfunctions (i.e. endow the eigenspace with Gaussian probability measure), is the sphere, and the corresponding eigenspaces are the spaces of spherical harmonics; this model is the primary focus of the present survey. The list of results presented is, by no means, complete.
