Spectral quasi correlations are small sums of lattice points lying on the same circle; we show that, for generic integers representable as the sum of two squares, there are no spectral quasi-correlations. Moreover, we apply our result to study the nodal length of Arithmetic Random Waves at small scales: we show that there exists a phase-transition for the distribution of the nodal length at a logarithmic power above Planck-scale. Furthermore, we give strong evidence for the existence of an intermediate phase between Arithmetic and Berry's random waves.
We test M. Berry's ansatz on nodal deficiency in presence of boundary. The square billiard is studied, where the high spectral degeneracies allow for the introduction of a Gaussian ensemble of random Laplace eigenfunctions ("boundary-adapted arithmetic random waves"). As a result of a precise asymptotic analysis, two terms in the asymptotic expansion of the expected nodal length are derived, in the high energy limit along a generic sequence of energy levels. It is found that the precise nodal deficiency or surplus of the nodal length depends on arithmetic properties of the energy levels, in an…
Given the ensemble of random Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the three-dimensional torus (`3d arithmetic random waves'), we investigate the $1$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the nodal intersection curve against a compact regular toral surface (the `nodal intersection length'). The expected length is proportional to the square root of the eigenvalue, times the surface area, independent of the geometry. Our main finding is the leading asymptotic of the nodal intersection length variance, against a surface of nonvanishing Gauss-Kronecker curvature. The problem is closely related to the theo…
Using the spectral multiplicities of the standard torus, we endow the Laplace eigenspaces with Gaussian probability measures. This induces a notion of random Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the torus ("arithmetic random waves"). We study the distribution of the nodal length of random eigenfunctions for large eigenvalues, and our primary result is that the asymptotics for the variance is non-universal, and is intimately related to the arithmetic of lattice points lying on a circle with radius corresponding to the energy.
We obtain lower bounds for the number of nodal domains of Hecke eigenfunctions on the sphere. Assuming the generalized Lindelof hypothesis we prove that the number of nodal domains of any Hecke eigenfunction grows with the eigenvalue of the Laplacian. By a very different method, we show unconditionally that the average number of nodal domains of degree l Hecke eigenfunctions grows significantly faster than the uniform growth obtained under Lindelof.
"Arithmetic random waves" are the Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the two-dimensional torus (Rudnick and Wigman (2008), Krishnapur, Kurlberg and Wigman (2013)). In this paper we find that their nodal length converges to a non-universal (non-Gaussian) limiting distribution, depending on the angular distribution of lattice points lying on circles. Our argument has two main ingredients. An explicit derivation of the Wiener-Itô chaos expansion for the nodal length shows that it is dominated by its $4$th order chaos component (in particular, somewhat surprisingly, the second order chaos componen…
We study the nodal length of random toral Laplace eigenfunctions ("arithmetic random waves") restricted to decreasing domains ("shrinking balls"), all the way down to Planck scale. We find that, up to a natural scaling, for "generic" energies the variance of the restricted nodal length obeys the same asymptotic law as the total nodal length, and these are asymptotically fully correlated. This, among other things, allows for a statistical reconstruction of the full toral length based on partial information. One of the key novel ingredients of our work, borrowing from number theory, is the use o…
Rudnick and Wigman (Ann. Henri Poincaré, 2008; arXiv:math-ph/0702081) conjectured that the variance of the volume of the nodal set of arithmetic random waves on the $d$-dimensional torus is $O(E/\mathcal{N})$, as $E\to\infty$, where $E$ is the energy and $\mathcal{N}$ is the dimension of the eigenspace corresponding to $E$. Previous results have established this with stronger asymptotics when $d=2$ and $d=3$. In this brief note we prove an upper bound of the form $O(E/\mathcal{N}^{1+α(d)-ε})$, for any $ε>0$ and $d\geq 4$, where $α(d)$ is positive and tends to zero with $d$. The power saving is…
We study the number of nodal components (connected components of the set of zeroes) of functions in the ensemble of arithmetic random waves, that is, random eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the flat $d$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^{d}$ ($d\ge2$). Let $f_{L}$ be a random solution to $Δf+4π^{2}L^{2}f=0$ on $\mathbb{T}^{d}$, where $L^{2}$ is a sum of $d$ squares of integers, and let $N_{L}$ be the random number of nodal components of $f_{L}$. By recent results of Nazarov and Sodin, $\mathbb{E}\left\{ N_{L}/L^{d}\right\} $ tends to a limit $ν>0$, depending only on $d$, as $L\to\infty$ subject …
We study the nodal intersections number of random Gaussian toral Laplace eigenfunctions ("arithmetic random waves") against a fixed smooth reference curve. The expected intersection number is proportional to the the square root of the eigenvalue times the length of curve, independent of its geometry. The asymptotic behaviour of the variance was addressed by Rudnick-Wigman; they found a precise asymptotic law for "generic" curves with nowhere vanishing curvature, depending on both its geometry and the angular distribution of lattice points lying on circles corresponding to the Laplace eigenvalu…
We consider the ensemble of random Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on $\mathbb{T}^3=\mathbb{R}^3/\mathbb{Z}^3$ (`$3d$ arithmetic random waves'), and study the distribution of their nodal surface area. The expected area is proportional to the square root of the eigenvalue, or `energy', of the eigenfunction. We show that the nodal area variance obeys an asymptotic law. The resulting asymptotic formula is closely related to the angular distribution and correlations of lattice points lying on spheres.
We investigate Gaussian Laplacian eigenfunctions (Arithmetic Random Waves) on the three-dimensional standard flat torus, in particular the asymptotic distribution of the nodal intersection length against a fixed regular reference surface. Expectation and variance have been addressed by Maffucci (2019) who found that the expected length is proportional to the square root of the eigenvalue times the area of the surface, while the asymptotic variance only depends on the geometry of the surface, the projected lattice points being equidistributed on the two-dimensional unit sphere in the high-energ…
We consider a random Gaussian ensemble of Laplace eigenfunctions on the 3D torus, and investigate the 1-dimensional Hausdorff measure (`length') of nodal intersections against a smooth 2-dimensional toral sub-manifold (`surface'). The expected length is universally proportional to the area of the reference surface, times the wavenumber, independent of the geometry. For surfaces contained in a plane, we give an upper bound for the nodal intersection length variance, depending on the arithmetic properties of the plane. The bound is established via estimates on the number of lattice points in spe…
We consider random Gaussian eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the three-dimensional flat torus, and investigate the number of nodal intersections against a straight line segment. The expected intersection number, against any smooth curve, is universally proportional to the length of the reference curve, times the wavenumber, independent of the geometry. We found an upper bound for the nodal intersections variance, depending on the arithmetic properties of the straight line. The considerations made establish a close relation between this problem and the theory of lattice points on spheres.
We investigate the number of nodal intersections of random Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the standard two-dimensional flat torus ("arithmetic random waves") with a fixed real-analytic reference curve with nonvanishing curvature. The expected intersection number is universally proportional to the length of the reference curve, times the wavenumber, independent of the geometry. Our main result prescribes the asymptotic behaviour of the nodal intersections variance for analytic curves in the high energy limit; remarkably, it is dependent on both the angular distribution of lattice points lyi…
We prove that each lower-dimensional face of a quasi-arithmetic Coxeter polytope, which happens to be itself a Coxeter polytope, is also quasi-arithmetic. We also provide a sufficient condition for a codimension $1$ face to be actually arithmetic, as well as a few computed examples.
We prove that the covolume of any quasi-arithmetic hyperbolic lattice (a notion that generalizes the definition of arithmetic subgroups) is a rational multiple of the covolume of an arithmetic subgroup. As a corollary, we obtain a good description for the shape of the volumes of most of the known hyperbolic n-manifolds with n>3.
In contrast to the fact that there are only finitely many maximal arithmetic reflection groups acting on the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$, $n\geq 2$, we show that: (a) one can produce infinitely many maximal quasi-arithmetic reflection groups acting on $\mathbb{H}^2$; (b) they admit infinitely many different fields of definition; (c) the degrees of their fields of definition are unbounded. However, for $n\geq 14$ an approach initially developed by Vinberg shows that there are still finitely many fields of definitions in the quasi-arithmetic case.
