A general formulation is presented to derive the equation of motion and to demonstrate thermodynamic consistency for several classes of phase field models at once. It applies to models with a conserved phase field, describing either uniform or periodic stable states, and containing slow as well as fast thermodynamic variables. The approach is based on an entropy functional formalism previously developed in the context of phase field models for uniform states [P. Galenko and D. Jou, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 71}, 046125 (2005)] and thus allows to extend several properties of the latter to phase field models for periodic states (phase field crystal models). In particular, it allows to demonstrate the concept of thermodynamic consistency for phase field crystal models with fast dynamics.
We present a simple theory of the thermodynamics of an incommensurate quantum solid. The ground state of the solid is assumed to be an incommensurate crystal, with quantum zero-point vacancies and interstitials and thus a non-integer number of atoms per unit cell. We show that the low temperature variation of the net vacancy concentration should be as $T^4$, and that the first correction to the specific heat due to this varies as $T^7$; these are quite consistent with experiments on solid $^4$He. We also make some observations about the recent experimental reports of ``supersolidity'' in solid…
A method is proposed to compute the interfacial free energy of a Lennard-Jones system in contact with a structured wall by molecular dynamics simulation. Both the bulk liquid and bulk face-centered-cubic crystal phase along the (111) orientation are considered. Our approach is based on a thermodynamic integration scheme where first the bulk Lennard-Jones system is reversibly transformed to a state where it interacts with a structureless flat wall. In a second step, the flat structureless wall is reversibly transformed into an atomistic wall with crystalline structure. The dependence of the int…
In this work, Monte Carlo simulation was implemented to study the phase diagrams and magnetic properties of a mixed spin (1-1/2-1) three-layer system with a cubic structure. In particular, the effects of the exchange and coupling parameters on the system compensation temperature were explored. More importantly, the effect of the crystal field on the system compensation, critical temperatures, and magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the system have been explored in detail. The crystal field was found to have a profound impact on the system compensation and critical temperatures. Our result…
We present a thermodynamic description of crystal plasticity. Our formulation is based on the Langer-Bouchbinder-Lookman thermodynamic dislocation theory (TDT), which asserts the fundamental importance of an effective temperature that describes the state of configurational disorder and therefore the dislocation density of the crystalline material. We extend the TDT description from isotropic plasticity to crystal plasticity with many slip systems. Finite-element simulations show favourable comparison with experiments on polycrystal fcc copper under uniaxial compression, tension, and simple she…
Predictions of relative stabilities of (competing) molecular crystals are of great technological relevance, most notably for the pharmaceutical industry. However, they present a long-standing challenge for modeling, as often minuscule free energy differences are sensitively affected by the description of electronic structure, the statistical mechanics of the nuclei and the cell, and thermal expansion. The importance of these effects has been individually established, but rigorous free energy calculations for general molecular compounds, which simultaneously account for all effects, have hithert…
A novel thermodynamic integration (TI) scheme is presented to compute the crystal-liquid interfacial free energy ($γ_{\rm cl}$) from molecular dynamics simulation. The scheme is applied to a Lennard-Jones system. By using extremely short-ranged and impenetrable Gaussian flat walls to confine the liquid and crystal phases, we overcome hysteresis problems of previous TI schemes that stem from the translational movement of the crystal-liquid interface. Our technique is applied to compute $γ_{\rm cl}$ for the (100), (110) and (111) orientation of the crystalline phase at three temperatures under c…
We calculate mean square deviations for crystals in one and two dimensions. For the two dimensional lattices, we consider several distinct geometries (i.e. square, triangular, and honeycomb), and we find the same essential phenomena for each lattice structure. We investigate the stability of long-range crystalline order for a variety of coupling schemes, including short-range exponentially decaying inter-atomic potentials and long-range interactions with a power law dependence r^{-alpha}. For the latter in the 1D case, we find a critical value alpha_c(1D) = 1.615 +/- 0.005 for the power law de…
Using Molecular Dynamics simulations based on the effective hamiltonian developed by Zhong, Vanderbilt and Rabe [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 73}, 1861 (1994)] (and fitted on first-principles calculations only), the technique of the thermodynamic integration is applied to barium titanate. It allows to compute the difference of free energy between macroscopic states with different polarizations, from the thermal averages of the forces acting on the local modes. This is achieved by performing molecular dynamics under the constraint of fixed polarization. The Landau free energy is thus interpreted as a …
This paper presents the thermodynamic dislocation theory containing several modifications over its first version which was originally proposed by Langer, Bouchbinder, and Lookman (2010). Employing a small set of physics-based material parameters identified by the large scale least squares analysis, we show that the theory can fit the stress-strain curves of bcc crystals niobium, tantalum, tungsten, and vanadium over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates.
A simple description of thermodynamics of DMAAS and DMAGaS ferroelectric crystals by means of Landau expansion is proposed. Conditions of occurrence of phase transitions are established and their temperatures are obtained. The influence of external hydrostatic pressure on phase transitions is described. The temperature behaviour of dielectric susceptibility components and their anomalies in the vicinity of phase transition points are investigated. Obtained results are compared with experimental data.
The hard sphere crystal-liquid interfacial free energy, ($γ_{\rm cl}$), is determined from molecular dynamics simulations using a novel thermodynamic integration (TI) scheme. The advantage of this TI scheme compared to previous methods is to successfully circumvent hysteresis effects due to the movement of the crystal-liquid interface. This is accomplished by the use of extremely short-ranged and impenetrable Gaussian flat walls which prevent the drift of the interface while imposing a negligible free-energy penalty. We find that it is crucial to analyze finite-size effects in order to obtain …
This article is written in memory of Pierre Hohenberg with appreciation for his deep commitment to the basic principles of theoretical physics. I summarize recent developments in the theory of dislocation-enabled deformation of crystalline solids. This topic is especially appropriate for the Journal of Statistical Physics because materials scientists, for decades, have asserted that statistical thermodynamics is inapplicable to dislocations. By use of simple, first-principles analyses and comparisons with experimental data, I argue that these materials scientists have been wrong, and that this…
We investigate crystalline thermodynamic stable lithium silicides phases (LixSiy) with density functional theory (DFT) and a force-field method based on modified embedded atoms (MEAM) and compare our results with experimental data. This work presents a fast and accurate framework to calculate thermodynamic properties of crystal structures with large unit cells with MEAM based on molecular dynamics (MD). Mechanical properties like the bulk modulus and the elastic constants are evaluated in addition to thermodynamic properties including the phonon density of states, the vibrational free energy a…
We present thermodynamic relationships between the free energy of the phase-field crystal (PFC) model and thermodynamic state variables for bulk phases under hydrostatic pressure. This relationship is derived based on the thermodynamic formalism for crystalline solids of Larché and Cahn [Larché and Cahn, Acta Metallurgica, Vol. 21, 1051 (1973)]. We apply the relationship to examine the thermodynamic processes associated with varying the input parameters of the PFC model: temperature, lattice spacing, and the average value of the PFC order parameter, $\bar{n}$. The equilibrium conditions betwee…
In this paper we describe a new model for solidification with heat flux using the phase field crystal (PFC) framework. The equations are thermodynamically consistent, in the sense that the time rate of change of the entropy density is positive in the bulk and at the boundaries of the domain of interest. The resulting model consists of two equations, a heat-like equation and a mass-conservation equation that describes how the atom density changes in time and space. The model is simple, yet it can properly capture the variation in the free energy landscape as the temperature is changed. We descr…
Simultaneous differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetric (TG) measurements with copper oxide/aluminum oxide mixtures were performed in atmospheres with varying oxygen partial pressures and with crucibles made of different materials. Only sapphire and platinum crucibles proved to be stable under conditions that are useful for the growth of CuAlO$_2$ delafossite single crystals. Then the ternary phase diagram Al$_2$O$_3$-CuO-Cu and its isopleth section Cu$_2$O-Al$_2$O$_3$ were redetermined. Millimeter sized crystals could be obtained from copper oxide melts with 1-2 mol % addition …
We used a micromechanical torsional oscillator to measure the magnetic response of a twinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystal disk near the Bose glass transition. We observe an anomaly in the temperature dependence of the magnetization consistent with the appearance of a magnetic shielding perpendicular to the correlated pinning of the twin boundaries. This effect is related to the thermodynamic transition from the vortex liquid phase to a Bose glass state.
We have combined the original diffusion-limited aggregation model introduced by Witten and Sander with the surface thermodynamics of the growing solid aggregate. The theory is based on the consideration of the surface chemical potential as a thermodynamic function of the temperature and nearest-neighbor configuration. The Monte Carlo simulations on a two-dimensional square lattice produce the broad range of shapes such as fractal dendritic structures, densely branching patterns, and compact aggregates. The morphology diagram illustrating the relationship between the model parameters and cluste…
The specific heat and thermodynamics of ${\rm Fe}_2{\rm P}$ single-crystals around the first order paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition at $T_{\rm C} = 217 \,{\rm K}$ are empirically investigated. The magnitude and direction of the magnetic field relative to the crystal axes govern the derived H-T phase diagram. Strikingly different phase contours are obtained for fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the $c$-axis of the crystal. In parallel fields, the FM state is stabilized, while in perpendicular fields, the phase transition is split into two, with an intermediate…
The antiferrodistortive (AFD) structural transitions of calcium titanate (CaTiO3) at ambient pressure have been extensively studied during the last few years. It is found none of the AFD polymorphs is polar or ferroelectric. However, it was recently shown theoretically and later experimentally confirmed that a ferroelectric transition in CaTiO3 can be induced by tensile strains. The ferroelectric instability is believed to be strongly coupled to the AFD soft modes. In this article, we present a complete thermodynamic potential for describing the coupling between the AFD and ferroelectric phase…
In this work, a theoretical study of phase equilibrium in mixtures of a calamitic nematic liquid crystal and hard spherical nanoparticles is presented. A mean-field thermodynamic model is used, where the interactions are considered to be proportional to the number of contacts, which in turn are proportional to the areas and area fractions of each component. It is shown that, as the radius of the particle is increased, the effect of the particles on the isotropic-nematic transition is less pronounced, and that for large radius the miscibility increases as the particle radius increases.
Dislocations are the main carriers of plastic deformation in crystalline materials. Physically based constitutive equations of crystal plasticity typically incorporate dislocation mechanisms, using a dislocation density based description of dislocation microstructure evolution and plastic flow. Typically, such constitutive models are not formulated in a thermodynamic framework. Nevertheless, fundamental considerations of thermodynamic consistency impose constraints on the admissible range of model parameters and/or on the range of application of such models. In particular, it is mandatory to e…
Interface energy and kinetic coefficient of crystal growth strongly depend on the face of the crystalline lattice. To investigate the kinetic anisotropy and velocity of different crystallographic faces we use the hyperbolic (modified) phase field crystal model which takes into account atomic density (as a slow thermodynamic variable) and atomic flux (as a fast thermodynamic variable). Such model covers slow and rapid regimes of interfaces propagation at small and large driving forces during solidification. In example of BCC crystal lattice invading the homogeneous liquid, dynamical regimes of …
We extend the vibronic exciton theory introduced in our previous work to study singlet fission dynamics, in particular addressing recent indications of the importance of vibronic coupling in this process. A microscopic and non-perturbative treatment of electronic and selected vibrational degrees of freedom in combination with Redfield theory allows us to dynamically consider clusters of molecules under conditions close to those in molecular crystals that exhibit fission. Using bulk pentacene as a concrete example, our results identify a number of factors that render fission rapid and effective…
The elastic and magnetic properties, thermodynamical stability, deviation from stoichiometry and order/disorder transformations of phases that are relevant to Be alloys were investigated using density functional theory simulations coupled with phonon density of states calculations to capture temperature effects. A novel structure and composition were identified for the Be-Fe binary ε phase. In absence of Al, FeBe_5 is predicted to form at equilibrium above ~ 1250 K, while the ε phase is stable only below ~ 1650 K, and FeBe_2 is stable at all temperatures below melting. Small additions of Al ar…
The model of NH$_3$CH$_2$COOH$\cdot$H$_2$PO$_3$, modified by taking into account the piezoelectric coupling between the ordering structure elements and the strains $\varepsilon_i$, $\varepsilon_j$, is used for investigation of the effects that appear under external pressures. Within two-particle cluster approximation, the components of polarization vector and static dielectric permittivity tensor of the mechanically clamped and free crystals, their piezoelectric and thermal characteristics are calculated. The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the phase transition and the calculated physical ch…
Experimental and modeling/simulation studies of phase equilibrium and growth morphologies of novel polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) mixtures of PS (polystyrene) and liquid crystals that exhibit a direct isotropic/smectic-A (lamellar) mesophase transition were performed for PS/10CB (decyl- cyanobiphenyl) and PS/12CB (dodecyl-cyanobiphenyl). Partial phase diagrams were determined using polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for different compositions of both materials, determining both phase separation (liquid/liquid demixing) and phase ordering (is…
p-V-T equation of state of superhard boron suboxide B6O has been measured up to 6 GPa and 2700 K using multianvil technique and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. To fit the experimental data, the theoretical p-V-T equation of state has been derived in approximation of the constant value of the Anderson-Grüneisen parameter δT. The model includes bulk modulus B0 =181 GPa and its first pressure derivative B0' = 6 at 300 K; two parameters describing thermal expansion at 0.1 MPa, i.e. a = 1.4x10-5 K-1 and b = 5x10-9 K-2, as well as δT = 6. The good agreement between fitted and experimental isobars has…
On the premise that amorphous-HEA composites could demonstrate high toughness and resistance to embrittlement akin to the phase separating glassy-solid solution composites, we develop a thermodynamics based approach to identify chemical compositions capable of undergoing the amorphous to HEA transformation. We introduce two new parameters called phase selection value (PSV) and molar volume dispersity parameter. Using this thermodynamic approach seven multi-component compositions were proposed and the general guidelines for identifying such compositions was established. The approach also reveal…

Spin-orbit coupling in heavy 5$d$ metal oxides, in particular, iridates have received tremendous interest in recent years due to the realization of exotic electronic and magnetic phases. Here, we report the synthesis, structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and optical properties of the ternary iridate Pr$_3$IrO$_7$. Single crystals of Pr$_3$IrO$_7$ have been grown by the KF flux method. Structural analysis shows that Pr$_3$IrO$_7$ crystallizes in an orthorhombic phase with $Cmcm$ symmetry. The electron energy loss spectroscopy study indicates that Pr is in a 3+ valence state, which implies a 5+ …
We report the detailed transport, magnetic, thermodynamic properties and theoretical calculation of KBi2 single crystals in superconducting and normal states. KBi2 shows metallic behavior at normal state and enters superconducting state below Tc = 3.573 K. Moreover, KBi2 exhibits low critical fields in all of measurements, field-induced crossover from second to first-order phase transition in specific heat measurement, typical magnetization isotherms of type-I superconductors, and small Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappaGL = 0.611. These results clearly indicate that KB2 is a type-I superconducto…
Metallic glasses have attracted considerable interest in recent years due to their unique combination of superb properties and processability. Predicting bulk metallic glass formers from known parameters remains a challenge and the search for new systems is still performed by trial and error. It has been speculated that some sort of "confusion" during crystallization of the crystalline phases competing with glass formation could play a key role. Here, we propose a heuristic descriptor quantifying confusion and demonstrate its validity by detailed experiments on two well-known glass forming all…
Unconventional superconductivity is characterized by the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the macroscopic superconducting wavefunction in addition to the gauge symmetry breaking, such as rotational-symmetry breaking with respect to the underlying crystal-lattice symmetry. Particularly, superconductivity with spontaneous rotational-symmetry breaking in the wavefunction amplitude and thus in bulk properties, not yet reported previously, is intriguing and can be termed "nematic" superconductivity in analogy to nematic liquid-crystal phases. Here, based on specific-heat measurements of the single-…
Geometrical constructions, such as the tangent construction on the molar free energy for determining whether a particular composition of a solution, is stable, are related to similar tangent constructions on the orientation-dependent interfacial energy for determining stable interface orientations and on the orientation dependence of the crystal growth rate which tests whether a particular orientation appears on a growing crystal. Subtle differences in the geometric constructions for the three fields arise from the choice of a metric (unit of measure). Using results from studies of extensive a…
