Experimental and modeling/simulation studies of phase equilibrium and growth morphologies of novel polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) mixtures of PS (polystyrene) and liquid crystals that exhibit a direct isotropic/smectic-A (lamellar) mesophase transition were performed for PS/10CB (decyl- cyanobiphenyl) and PS/12CB (dodecyl-cyanobiphenyl). Partial phase diagrams were determined using polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for different compositions of both materials, determining both phase separation (liquid/liquid demixing) and phase ordering (isotropic/smectic-A transition) temperatures. The Flory-Huggins theory of isotropic mixing and Maier-Saupe-McMillan theory for smectic-A liquid crystalline ordering were used to computationally determine phase diagrams for both systems, showing good agreement with the experimental results. In addition to thermodynamic observations, growth morphology relations were found depending on phase transition sequence, quench rate, and material composition. Three stages of liquid crystal-rich domain growth morphology were observed: spherical macroscale domain growth ("stage I"), highly anisotropic domain growth ("stage II"), and sub-micron spheroid domain growth ("stage III"). Nano-scale structure of spheroidal and spherocylindrical morphologies were then determined via two-dimensional simulation of a high-order Landau-de Gennes model. Morphologies observed during stage II growth are typical of di- rect isotropic/smectic-A phase transitions, such as highly anisotropic "batonnets" and filaments. These morphologies, which are found to be persistent in direct isotropic/smectic-A PDLCs, could provide new functionality and applications for these functional materials.
Liquid crystals (LCs) composed of mesogens play important roles in various scientific and engineering problems. How a system with many mesogens can enter a LC state is an interesting and important problem. Using stiff and free-joint Lennard-Jones chain molecules as mesogens, we study the conditions under which the mesogens can enter various LC phases. The guideline is to eliminate the unwanted translational orders under a controlled fine-tuning procedure across a sequence of systems. Instead of monitoring the growth of order out of the disorder, we prepare a configuration of high orientation o…
Previous theoretical studies of calamitic (i.e., rod-like) ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) based on an effective one-species model led to indications of a novel smectic-A phase with a layer spacing being much larger than the length of the mesogenic (i.e., liquid-crystal forming) ions. In order to rule out the possibility that this wide smectic-A phase is merely an artifact caused by the one-species approximation, we investigate an extension which accounts explicitly for cations and anions in ILCs. Our present findings, obtained by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, show that the phase trans…
The chiral, heliconical (twist-bend) nematic ground state is reported in an achiral, rigid, bent-core mesogen (UD68). Similar to the nematic twist-bend (NTB) phase observed in bent molecular dimers, the NTB phase of UD68 forms macroscopic, smectic-like focal-conic textures and exhibits nanoscale, periodic modulation with no associated modulation of the electron density, i.e., without a detectable lamellar x-ray reflection peak. The NTB helical pitch is pTB ~ 14 nm. When an electric field is applied normal to the helix axis, a weak electroclinic effect is observed, revealing 50 um-scale left- a…
Structural studies by synchrotron x-ray diffraction on two main-chain smectic-C elastomers reveal the presence of two different relaxation mechanisms in these systems at low and high strains. At low strains, the smectic layers are reoriented with layer-normals distributed in a plane perpendicular to the stretch direction. The system relaxes relatively slowly (time-constant ~ 45 minutes) which is attributed to the flow properties of the LC layers embedded in the elastomer network. At high strains, the equilibration time (~ 4 - 8 minutes) conforms to a faster relaxation and appears to have its o…
Polymer vesicles are stable robust vesicles made from block copolymer amphiphiles. Recent progress in the chemical design of block copolymers opens up the exciting possibility of creating a wide variety of polymer vesicles with varying fine structure, functionality and geometry. Polymer vesicles not only constitute useful systems for drug delivery and micro/nano-reactors but also provide an invaluable arena for exploring the ordering of matter on curved surfaces embedded in three dimensions. By choosing suitable liquid-crystalline polymers for one of the copolymer components one can create ves…
General microscopic mechanism of ferroelectric ordering in chiral smectic C* liquid crystals is considered. It is shown that if the mesogenic molecules have a sufficiently low symmetry, the spontaneous polarization is proportional to one of the biaxial vector order parameters of the smectic C phase. This order parameter may be determined by intermolecular interactions which are not sensitive to molecular chirality. At the same time, the polarization is also proportional to a pseudoscalar parameter which vanishes if the molecules are nonchiral. The general statistical theory of ferroelectric or…
We present a model for smectic elastomer membranes which includes elastic and liquid crystalline degrees of freedom. Based on our model, we determined the qualitative phase diagram of a smectic elastomer membrane using mean-field theory. This phase diagram is found to comprise five phases, viz. smectic-A--flat, smectic-A--crumpled, smectic-C--flat, smectic-C--crumpled and smectic-C--tubule, where in the latter phase, the membrane is flat in the direction of mesogenic tilt and crumpled in the perpendicular direction. The transitions between adjacent phases are second order phase transitions. We…
The dynamics of self-locomotion of active particles in aligned or liquid crystalline fluids strongly deviates from that in simple isotropic media. We explore the long-time dynamics of a swimmer moving in a three-dimensional smectic liquid crystal and find that the mean-square displacement (MSD) transverse to the director exhibits a distinct logarithmic tail at long times. The scaling is distinctly different from that in an isotropic or nematic fluid and hints at the subtle but important role of the director fluctuation spectrum in governing the long-time motility of active particles. Our findi…
We report a molecular dynamics simulation demonstrating that the Smectic B crystalline phase (Cr-B), commonly observed in mesogenic systems of anisotropic molecules, can be formed by a system of identical particles interacting via a spherically symmetric potential. The Cr-B phase forms as a result of a first order transition from an isotropic liquid phase upon isochoric cooling at appropriate number density. Its structure, determined by the design of the pair potential corresponds to Cr-B structure formed by elongated particles with the aspect ratio 1.8. The diffraction pattern, and the real-s…
We report the smectic $A_F$, a new liquid crystal phase of the ferroelectric nematic realm. The smectic $A_F$ is a phase of small polar, rod-shaped molecules which form two-dimensional fluid layers spaced by approximately the mean molecular length. The phase is uniaxial, with the molecular director, the local average long-axis orientation, normal to the layer planes, and ferroelectric, with a spontaneous electric polarization parallel to the director. Polarization measurements indicate almost complete polar ordering of the $\sim 10$ Debye longitudinal molecular dipoles, and hysteretic polariza…
Using Monte Carlo simulation methods, we explore the role of molecular shape in the phase behavior of liquid crystals and the electroclinic effect. We study a "bent-rod" mesogen shaped like the letter Z, composed of seven soft spheres bonded rigidly together with no intra-molecular degrees of freedom. For strongly angled molecules, we find that steric repulsion alone provides the driving force for a smectic-C phase, even without intermolecular dipole-dipole interactions. For weakly angled (nearly rod-like) molecules, we find a stable smectic-A (SmA) phase and a strong electroclinic effect with…
Ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) are anisotropic mesogenic molecules which carry charges and therefore combine properties of liquid crystals, e.g., the formation of mesophases, and of ionic liquids, such as low melting temperatures and tiny triple-point pressures. Previous density functional calculations have revealed that the phase behavior of ILCs is strongly affected by their molecular properties, i.e., their aspect ratio, the loci of the charges, and their interaction strengths. Here, we report new findings concerning the phase behavior of ILCs as obtained by density functional theory and Mont…
We propose a survey of those oxadiazole compounds, which are mesogenic. We will see that they can have bend-shaped molecules, a biaxial nematic phase, or other interesting peculiarities in the nematic and smectic phase. With large electric dipoles and luminescent properties, these materials are also very appealing for technological applications.
A high-resolution calorimetric study has been carried out on nano-colloidal dispersions of aerosils in the liquid crystal 4-\textit{n}-pentylphenylthiol-4'-\textit{n}-octyloxybenzoate ($\bar{8}$S5) as a function of aerosil concentration and temperature spanning the smectic-\textit{C} to nematic phases. Over this temperature range, this liquid crystal possesses two continuous XY phase transitions: a fluctuation dominated nematic to smectic-\textit{A} transition with $α\approx α_{XY} = -0.013$ and a mean-field smectic-\textit{A} to smectic-\textit{C} transition. The effective critical character …
We present an experimental study of the surface effects (interactions with the container walls) during the nucleation and growth of smectic B crystals from the nematic in free growth and directional solidification of a mesogenic molecule ($C_4H_9-(C_6H_{10})_2CN$) called CCH4 in thin (of thickness in the 10 $μ$m range) samples. We follow the dynamics of the system in real time with a polarizing microscope. The inner surfaces of the glass-plate samples are coated with polymeric films, either rubbed polyimid (PI) films or monooriented poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) films deposited by friction …
We present the phase diagram of a system of mesogenic top-shaped molecules based on the Parsons- Lee density functional theory and Monte Carlo simulation. The molecules are modeled as a hard spherocylinder with a hard sphere embedded in its center. The stability of five different phases is studied, namely, isotropic, nematic, smectic A, smectic C, and columnar phases. The positionally ordered phases are investigated only for the case of parallel alignment. It is found that the central spherical unit destabilizes the nematic with respect to the isotropic phase, while increasing the length of th…
The continuous nematic to smectic-A (N-SmA) phase transition has been studied by high-resolution ac-calorimetry in binary mixtures of the liquid crystal octylcyanobiphenyl(8CB) and a non-mesogenic, low-molecular weight, solvent n-hexane(hex) as a function of temperature and solvent concentration. Heating and cooling scans about the N-SmA transition temperature were repeatedly performed on pure and six 8CB+hex samples having hexane molar concentration ranging from x_{hex}= 0.02 to 0.12. All 8CB+hex samples in this range of x_{hex} remain macroscopically miscible and exhibit an N-SmA heat capaci…
Chiral domains of opposite chirality are observed surprisingly in a nematic phase of an achiral rod-like liquid crystalline mesogen that shows ferroelectric nematic and antiferroelectric smectic phases. The observations of chiral domains of opposite chirality are enabled by application of a weak electric field across a planar-aligned cell. However once domains of opposite chirality are created, these stay permanently even if the field is removed. The observed phenomenon is due to the symmetry breaking of achiral mesogens of rod-shaped molecules. These domains are similarly observed in the Nx p…
Ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) are anisotropic mesogenic molecules which additionally carry charges. This combination gives rise to a complex interplay of the underlying (anisotropic) contributions to the pair interactions. It promises interesting and distinctive structural and orientational properties to arise in systems of ILCs, combining properties of liquid crystals and ionic liquids. While previous theoretical studies have focused on the phase behavior of ILCs and the structure of the respective bulk phases, in the present study we provide new results, obtained within density functional the…
We carry out Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the effect of molecular shape on liquid-crystal order. In our approach, each model mesogen consists of several soft spheres bonded rigidly together. The arrangement of the spheres may be straight (to represent uniaxial molecules), Z-shaped (for biaxial molecules), or banana-shaped (for bent-core molecules). Using this approach, we investigate the alignment of the nematic phase by substrates decorated with parallel ridges. We compare results for wide and narrow ridge spacing and examine local order near the substrates, and show that our result…
The origin and structure of self assembled chiral liquid crystalline Blue Phase III (BPIII) have remained an enigma despite efforts spreading over decades. We report here an off-lattice NVT molecular dynamics simulation study of a system of polar chiral ellipsoidal molecules, which spontaneously exhibits BPIII , considering coarse-grained attractive-repulsive pair interaction appropriate for anisotropic liquid crystal mesogens. We have observed that suitable selection of chiral and dipolar strengths not only gives rise to thermodynamically stable BPIII but novel Smectic and Bilayered BPIII as …
We report a novel multi-scale simulation methodology to quantitatively predict the thermodynamic behaviour of polymer mixtures, that exhibit phases with broken orientational symmetry. Our system consists of a binary mixture of oligomers and rod-like mesogens. Using coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) simulations we infer the topology of the temperature-dependent free energy landscape from the probability distributions of excess volume fraction of the components. The mixture exhibits nematic and smectic phases as a function of two temperature scales, the nematic-isotropic temperature $T_{N…
We report Monte-Carlo simulation studies of some systems consisting of polar rod-like molecules interacting via a pair potential that exhibit liquid crystal phases, attributed with tilt angles of large magnitude. For theoretical understanding of the microscopic origin of the tilted phases, different systems consisting of prolate ellipsoidal molecules of three different lengths, embedded with two symmetrically placed anti-parallel terminal dipoles are considered. We find that the presence of a stable tilted phase crucially depends on the molecular elongation which effectively makes dipolar sepa…
