Chiral domains of opposite chirality are observed surprisingly in a nematic phase of an achiral rod-like liquid crystalline mesogen that shows ferroelectric nematic and antiferroelectric smectic phases. The observations of chiral domains of opposite chirality are enabled by application of a weak electric field across a planar-aligned cell. However once domains of opposite chirality are created, these stay permanently even if the field is removed. The observed phenomenon is due to the symmetry breaking of achiral mesogens of rod-shaped molecules. These domains are similarly observed in the Nx phase. However for temperatures close or in the NF, the size of domains is reduced significantly below the wavelength of visible light. There is either a single domain with dipole moments parallel to the surface or domains antiparallel in the NF phase, not possible to determine in this experiment.
Proteins often form chiral assembly structures on a biomembrane. However, the role of the chirality in the interaction with an achiral membrane is poorly understood. Here, the differential behavior between chiral and achiral crescent-shaped protein rods was investigated using meshless membrane simulations. The achiral rods deformed the membrane tube into an elliptical shape by stabilizing the edges of the ellipse. In contrast, the chiral rods formed a helical assembly that generated a cylindrical membrane tube with a constant radius in addition to the elliptical tube. This helical assembly cou…
The propagation of chirality across scales is a common but poorly understood phenomenon in soft matter. In this work, we use computer simulations to study chiral monolayer assemblies formed by hard rod-like colloidal particles in the presence of non-adsorbing polymer and characterize the thermodynamic driving forces responsible for the twisting. Simulations show that straight (achiral) rods assemble into monolayers with a spontaneous twist that is either left- or right-handed, while helical (chiral) rods lead to assemblies with preferential chiral features that depend on their handedness and c…
The minimal ingredient to generate a biaxial liquid crystalline ordering is usually considered to be the strongly biaxial interactions breaking the cylindrical symmetry of the uniaxial molecules. Although there is no fundamental reason to forbid a biaxial ordering of pure uniaxial origin, it has been a long standing problem to find a robust demonstration of such phenomenon in systems of rod-like particles. We report here off-lattice Monte Carlo simulations of some new model systems of polar achiral rodlike ellipsoids which spontaneously exhibit novel biaxial smectic phases of pure uniaxial ori…
Strongly dipolar mesogenic compounds with a chiral center located in a lateral alkyl chain were synthesized, and shown to form the ferroelectric nematic phase. The presence of molecular chirality induced a helical structure in both the N and NF phases, but with opposite helix sense in the two phases. The relaxation frequency of the polar fluctuations was found to be lower for the chiral NF phase than for its achiral, non-branched counterpart with the same lateral chain length.

This analysis of the electroclinic effect in ferroelectric liquid crystals with a first order Smectic-$A^*$--Smectic-$C^*$ (Sm-$A^*$--Sm-$C^*$) transition, shows they can be either Type I or Type II. In temperature--field parameter space Type I systems exhibit a macroscopically achiral (in which the Sm-$C^*$ helical superstructure is expelled) low-tilt (LT) Sm-$C$--high-tilt (HT) Sm-$C$ critical point, which terminates a LT Sm-$C$--HT Sm-$C$ first order boundary. This boundary extends to an achiral-chiral triple point where the achiral LT Sm-$C$ and HT Sm-$C$ phases coexist with the chiral Sm-…
We report the smectic $A_F$, a new liquid crystal phase of the ferroelectric nematic realm. The smectic $A_F$ is a phase of small polar, rod-shaped molecules which form two-dimensional fluid layers spaced by approximately the mean molecular length. The phase is uniaxial, with the molecular director, the local average long-axis orientation, normal to the layer planes, and ferroelectric, with a spontaneous electric polarization parallel to the director. Polarization measurements indicate almost complete polar ordering of the $\sim 10$ Debye longitudinal molecular dipoles, and hysteretic polariza…

In equilibrium liquid crystals, chirality leads to a variety of spectacular three-dimensional structures, but chiral and achiral phases with the same broken continuous symmetries have identical long-time, large-scale dynamics. In this paper, we demonstrate that chirality qualitatively modifies the dynamics of layered liquid crystals in active systems in both two and three dimensions due to an active "odder" elasticity. In three dimensions, we demonstrate that the hydrodynamics of active cholesterics differs fundamentally from smectic-A liquid crystals, unlike their equilibrium counterpart. Thi…
