The aim of the work is to give the explicit proofs of the Renyi-entropy uncertainty relations presented in the previous work [A. Rastegin, arXiv:0805.1777]. The relations with both the state-dependent and state-independent entropic bounds are proved. For a pair of POVM measurements the two relations are obtained. The first of them is generalization of the known results, whereas the second is quite alternative. It is shown that both these relations are meaty. The important case of POVM's with one-rank elements is extra discussed. The measurements designed for distinction between two non-orthogonal quantum states are considered as examples.
We explore the relation between the von Neumann entropy and the Renyi entropies of integer orders for shift-invariant quasi-free Fermionic lattice systems. We investigate approximating the von Neumann entropy by a combination of integer-order Renyi entropies and give an estimate for the quality of such an approximation.
Quantum mechanical uncertainty relations for position and momentum are expressed in the form of inequalities involving the Renyi entropies. The proof of these inequalities requires the use of the exact expression for the (p,q)-norm of the Fourier transformation derived by Babenko and Beckner. Analogous uncertainty relations are derived for angle and angular momentum and also for a pair of complementary observables in N-level systems. All these uncertainty relations become more attractive when expressed in terms of the symmetrized Renyi entropies.
We consider a two-parameter family of Rényi relative entropies $D_{α,z}(ρ||σ)$ that are quantum generalisations of the classical Rényi divergence $D_α(p||q)$. This family includes many known relative entropies (or divergences) such as the quantum relative entropy, the recently defined quantum Rényi divergences, as well as the quantum Rényi relative entropies. All its members satisfy the quantum generalizations of Rényi's axioms for a divergence. We consider the range of the parameters $α,z$ for which the data processing inequality holds. We also investigate a variety of limiting cases for the …
The minimum Renyi and Wehrl output entropies are found for bosonic channels in which the signal photons are either randomly displaced by a Gaussian distribution (classical-noise channel), or in which they are coupled to a thermal environment through lossy propagation (thermal-noise channel). It is shown that the Renyi output entropies of integer orders z>1 and the output Wehrl entropy are minimized when the channel input is a coherent state.
Uncertainty relations for a pair of arbitrary measurements and for a single measurement are posed in the form of inequalities using the Renyi entropies. The formulation deals with discrete observables. Both the relations with state-dependent and state-independent bounds are presented. The entropic bounds are illustrated within the distinction between non-orthogonal states.
The Tsallis and Rényi entropies are important quantities in the information theory, statistics and related fields because the Tsallis entropy is an one parameter generalization of the Shannon entropy and the Rényi entropy includes several useful entropy measures such as the Shannon entropy, Min-entropy and so on, as special choices of its parameter. On the other hand, the discrete-time quantum walk plays important roles in various applications, for example, quantum speed-up algorithm and universal computation. In this paper, we show limiting behaviors of the Tsallis and Rényi entropies for dis…
A realistic Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocol necessarily deals with finite resources, such as the number of signals exchanged by the two parties. We derive a bound on the secret key rate which is expressed as an optimization problem over Rényi entropies. Under the assumption of collective attacks by an eavesdropper, a computable estimate of our bound for the six-state protocol is provided. This bound leads to improved key rates in comparison to previous results.
The Rényi and von Neumann entropies of the thermal state in the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP)-corrected single harmonic oscillator system are explicitly computed within the first order of the GUP parameter $α$. While the von Neumann entropy with $α= 0$ exhibits a monotonically increasing behavior in external temperature, the nonzero GUP parameter makes the decreasing behavior of the von Neumann entropy at the large temperature region. As a result, the von Neumann entropy is maximized at the finite temperature if $α\neq 0$. The Rényi entropy $S_γ$ with nonzero $α$ also exhibits simila…
The Rényi and Shannon entropies are information-theoretic measures which have enabled to formulate the position-momentum uncertainty principle in a much more adequate and stringent way than the (variance-based) Heisenberg-like relation. Moreover, they are closely related to various energetic density-functionals of quantum systems. Here we find sharp upper bounds to these quantities in terms of the second order moment $\langle r^2\rangle$ for general spherically symmetric potentials, which substantially improve previous results of this type, by means of the Rényi maximization procedure with a c…
We obtain uncertainty and certainty relations of state-independent form for the three Pauli observables with use of the Rényi entropies of order $α\in(0;1]$. It is shown that these entropic bounds are tight in the sense that they are always reached with certain pure states. A new result is the conditions for equality in Rényi-entropy uncertainty relations for the Pauli observables. Upper entropic bounds in the pure-state case are also novel. Combining the presented bounds leads to a band, in which the rescaled average Rényi $α$-entropy ranges for a pure measured state. A width of this band is …
We show that the stability theorem of the depolarizing channel holds for the output quantum $p$-Rényi entropy for $p \ge 2$ or $p=1$, which is an extension of the well known case $p=2$. As an application, we present a protocol in which Bob determines whether Alice prepares a pure quantum state close to a product state. In the protocol, Alice transmits to Bob multiple copies of a pure state through a depolarizing channel, and Bob estimates its output quantum $p$-Rényi entropy. By using our stability theorem, we show that Bob can determine whether her preparation is appropriate.
Many of the traditional results in information theory, such as the channel coding theorem or the source coding theorem, are restricted to scenarios where the underlying resources are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) over a large number of uses. To overcome this limitation, two different techniques, the information spectrum method and the smooth entropy framework, have been developed independently. They are based on new entropy measures, called spectral entropy rates and smooth entropies, respectively, that generalize Shannon entropy (in the classical case) and von Neumann entro…

Entanglement entropy is an essential metric for characterizing quantum many-body systems, but its numerical evaluation for neural network representations of quantum states has so far been inefficient and demonstrated only for the restricted Boltzmann machine architecture. Here, we estimate generalized Renyi entropies of autoregressive neural quantum states with up to N=256 spins using quantum Monte Carlo methods. A naive "direct sampling" approach performs well for low-order Renyi entropies but fails for larger orders when benchmarked on a 1D Heisenberg model. We therefore propose an improved …
We use a Rényi entropy method to prove strong converse theorems for certain information-theoretic tasks which involve local operations and quantum or classical communication between two parties. These include state redistribution, coherent state merging, quantum state splitting, measurement compression with quantum side information, randomness extraction against quantum side information, and data compression with quantum side information. The method we employ in proving these results extends ideas developed by Sharma [arXiv:1404.5940], which he used to give a new proof of the strong converse t…
The $α$-$z$ Rényi relative entropies are a two-parameter family of Rényi relative entropies that are quantum generalizations of the classical $α$-Rényi relative entropies. In \cite{zhang20CFL} we decided the full range of $(α,z)$ for which the Data Processing Inequality (DPI) is valid. In this paper we give algebraic conditions for the equality in DPI. For the full range of parameters $(α,z)$, we give necessary conditions and sufficient conditions. For most parameters we give equivalent conditions. This generalizes and strengthens the results of Leditzky, Rouz{é} and Datta in \cite{LRD17DPI}.
Recently a new quantum generalization of the Renyi divergence and the corresponding conditional Renyi entropies was proposed. Here we report on a surprising relation between conditional Renyi entropies based on this new generalization and conditional Renyi entropies based on the quantum relative Renyi entropy that was used in previous literature. Our result generalizes the well-known duality relation H(A|B) + H(A|C) = 0 of the conditional von Neumann entropy for tripartite pure states to Renyi entropies of two different kinds. As a direct application, we prove a collection of inequalities that…
This paper introduces "swiveled Renyi entropies" as an alternative to the Renyi entropic quantities put forward in [Berta et al., Phys. Rev. A 91, 022333 (2015)]. What distinguishes the swiveled Renyi entropies from the prior proposal of Berta et al. is that there is an extra degree of freedom: an optimization over unitary rotations with respect to particular fixed bases (swivels). A consequence of this extra degree of freedom is that the swiveled Renyi entropies are ordered, which is an important property of the Renyi family of entropies. The swiveled Renyi entropies are however generally dis…
Renyi entropy associated with spin tomograms of quantum states is shown to obey to new inequalities containing the dependence on quantum Fourier transform. The limiting inequality for the von Neumann entropy of spin quantum states and a new kind of entropy associated with quantum Fourier transform are obtained. Possible connections with subadditivity and strong subadditivity conditions for tomographic entropies and von Neumann entropies are discussed.
Relations between Shannon entropy and Renyi entropies of integer order are discussed. For any N-point discrete probability distribution for which the Renyi entropies of order two and three are known, we provide an lower and an upper bound for the Shannon entropy. The average of both bounds provide an explicit extrapolation for this quantity. These results imply relations between the von Neumann entropy of a mixed quantum state, its linear entropy and traces.
We compute the quantum Renyi relative entropies in an infinite spinless fermionic chain with a defect. Doing a numerical analysis we will show that the resulting quantity depends non trivially on the effective central charge of the theory. Moreover, we will see that an explicit analytic expression can be written for all of them and from that, one can read the quantum fidelity and the relative entropy.
The growth of Renyi entropies after the injection of energy into a correlated system provides a window upon the dynamics of its entanglement properties. We develop here a simulation scheme by which this growth can be determined in Luttinger liquids systems with arbitrary interactions, even those introducing gaps into the liquid. We apply this scheme to an experimentally relevant quench in the sine-Gordon field theory. While for short times we provide an analytic expression for the growth of the second and third Renyi entropy, to access longer times, we combine our scheme with truncated spectru…
We generalize the concept of the Wehrl entropy of quantum states which gives a basis-independent measure of their localization in phase space. We discuss the minimal values and the typical values of these R{enyi-Wehrl entropies for pure states for spin systems. According to Lieb's conjecture the minimal values are provided by the spin coherent states. Though Lieb's conjecture remains unproven, we give new proofs of partial results that may be generalized for other systems. We also investigate random pure states and calculate the mean Renyi-Wehrl entropies averaged over the natural measure in t…
Renyi entropies S_q are useful measures of quantum entanglement; they can be calculated from traces of the reduced density matrix raised to power q, with q>=0. For (d+1)-dimensional conformal field theories, the Renyi entropies across S^{d-1} may be extracted from the thermal partition functions of these theories on either (d+1)-dimensional de Sitter space or R x H^d, where H^d is the d-dimensional hyperbolic space. These thermal partition functions can in turn be expressed as path integrals on branched coverings of the (d+1)-dimensional sphere and S^1 x H^d, respectively. We calculate the Ren…
For certain families of finite quantum graphs, we study the question of how eigenfunctions are distributed over the graph. To characterize properties of the distribution, generalized entropies of the Rényi and Tsallis types are considered. The presented approach is similar to entropic uncertainty relations of the Maassen-Uffink type. Using the Riesz theorem, we derive lower bounds on symmetrized generalized entropies of eigenfunctions. A quality of such estimates will depend on boundary conditions used at vertices of the given graph. Rényi and Tsallis entropies of eigenfunctions of star graphs…
We demonstrate that the condensed matter quantum systems encompassing two reservoirs connected by a junction permit a natural definition of flows of conserved measures, Renyi entropies. Such flows are similar to the flows of physical conserved quantities such as charge and energy. We develop a perturbation technique that permits efficient computation of Renyi entropy flows and analyze second- and fourth order contributions. Second-order approximation was shown to correspond directly to the transition events in the system and thereby to posess a set of "intuitive" features. The analysis of four…
We consider Renyi entropies of conformal field theories in flat space, with the entangling surface being a sphere. The AdS/CFT correspondence relates this Renyi entropy to that of a black hole with hyperbolic horizon; as the Renyi parameter $n$ increases the temperature of the black hole decreases. If the CFT possesses a sufficiently low dimension scalar operator the black hole will be unstable to the development of hair. Thus, as $n$ is varied, the Renyi entropies will exhibit a phase transition at a critical value of $n$. The location of the phase transition, along with the spectrum of the r…
We implement a Wang-Landau sampling technique in quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) for the purpose of calculating the Renyi entanglement entropies and associated mutual information. The algorithm converges an estimate for an analogue to the density of states for Stochastic Series Expansion QMC allowing a direct calculation of Renyi entropies without explicit thermodynamic integration. We benchmark results for the mutual information on two-dimensional (2D) isotropic and anisotropic Heisenberg models, 2D transverse field Ising model, and 3D Heisenberg model, confirming a critical scaling of the mutual i…
Entanglement entropy in even dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) contains well-known universal terms arising from the conformal anomaly. Renyi entropies are natural generalizations of the entanglement entropy that are much less understood. Above two spacetime dimensions, the universal terms in the Renyi entropies are unknown for general entangling geometries. We conjecture a new structure in the dependence of the four-dimensional Renyi entropies on the intrinsic and extrinsic geometry of the entangling surface. We provide evidence for this conjecture by direct numerical computations in…
The Renyi entropies constitute a family of information measures that generalizes the well-known Shannon entropy, inheriting many of its properties. They appear in the form of unconditional and conditional entropies, relative entropies or mutual information, and have found many applications in information theory and beyond. Various generalizations of Renyi entropies to the quantum setting have been proposed, most notably Petz's quasi-entropies and Renner's conditional min-, max- and collision entropy. Here, we argue that previous quantum extensions are incompatible and thus unsatisfactory. We p…
We investigate the scaling of the Rényi $α$-entropies in one-dimensional gapped quantum spin models. We show that the block entropies with $α> 2$ violate the area law monotonicity and exhibit damped oscillations. Depending on the existence of a factorized ground state, the oscillatory behavior occurs either below factorization or it extends indefinitely. The anomalous scaling corresponds to an entanglement-driven order that is independent of ground-state degeneracy and is revealed by a nonlocal order parameter defined as the sum of the single-copy entanglement over all blocks.
Quantum Renyi relative entropies provide a one-parameter family of distances between density matrices, which generalizes the relative entropy and the fidelity. We study these measures for renormalization group flows in quantum field theory. We derive explicit expressions in free field theory based on the real time approach. Using monotonicity properties, we obtain new inequalities that need to be satisfied by consistent renormalization group trajectories in field theory. These inequalities play the role of a second law of thermodynamics, in the context of renormalization group flows. Finally, …
In this work, we study the Renyi-alpha entropies S_{alpha}(\hat{rho}) = (1 - alpha)^{-1} \ln{Tr(\hat{rho}^{alpha})} of quantum states for N bosons in the phase-space representation. With the help of the Bopp rule, we derive the entropies of Gaussian states in closed form for positive integers alpha = 2,3,4, ... and then, with the help of the analytic continuation, acquire the closed form also for real values of alpha > 0. The quantity S_2(\hat{rho}), primarily studied in the literature, will then be a special case of our finding. Subsequently we acquire the Renyi-alpha entropies, with positive…
The Rényi entropies $R_{p}[ρ], 0<p<\infty$ of the probability density $ρ_{n,l,m}(\vec{r})$ of a physical system completely characterize the chemical and physical properties of the quantum state described by the three integer quantum numbers $(n,l,m)$. The analytical determination of these quantities is practically impossible up until now, even for the very few systems where their Schrödinger equation is exactly solved. In this work, the Rényi entropies of Rydberg (highly-excited) hydrogenic states are explicitly calculated in terms of the quantum numbers and the parameter $p$. To do that we us…
We introduce and study generalized Rényi entropies defined through the traces of products of ${\rm Tr}_B (|Ψ_i\rangle\langle Ψ_j|)$ where $|Ψ_i\rangle$ are eigenstates of a two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT). When $|Ψ_i\rangle=|Ψ_j\rangle$ these objects reduce to the standard Rényi entropies of the eigenstates of the CFT. Exploiting the path integral formalism, we show that the second generalized Rényi entropies are equivalent to four-point correlators. We then focus on a free bosonic theory for which the mode expansion of the fields allows us to develop an efficient strategy to comp…
We present a scheme for measuring Rényi entropies in generic atomic Hubbard and spin models using single copies of a quantum state and for partitions in arbitrary spatial dimension. Our approach is based on the generation of random unitaries from random quenches, implemented using engineered time-dependent disorder potentials, and standard projective measurements, as realized by quantum gas microscopes. By analyzing the properties of the generated unitaries and the role of statistical errors, with respect to the size of the partition, we show that the protocol can be realized in exisiting AMO …
Phase-space features of the Wigner flow are examined so to provide a set of continuity equations that describe the flux of quantum information in the phase-space. The reported results suggest that the non-classicality profile of anharmonic (periodic) quantum systems can be consistently obtained in terms of the fluxes of probability, purity and von Neumann entropy. Extensions of the such phase-space quantifiers are also investigated in the context of the so-called Rényi entropy.
We perform quantum Monte Carlo calculations to determine how the Renyi entropies, $S_n$, of the interacting Fermi liquid depend on Renyi order, $n$, and scale as a function of system size, $L$. Using the swap operator and an accurate Slater-Jastrow wave function, we compute Renyi entropies for spinless fermions interacting via the Coulomb and modified Pöschl-Teller potentials across a range of correlation strengths. Our results show that interactions increase the Renyi entropies and increase the prefactor of their scaling laws. The relationships between Renyi entropies of different order $n$ a…
We discuss the Renyi entanglement entropies of descendant states in critical one-dimensional systems with boundaries, that map to boundary conformal field theories in the scaling limit. We unify the previous conformal-field-theory approaches to describe primary and descendant states in systems with both open and closed boundaries. We provide universal expressions for the first two descendants in the identity family. We apply our technique to critical systems belonging to different universality classes with non-trivial boundary conditions that preserve conformal invariance, and find excellent a…
We present a general framework for the generation of random unitaries based on random quenches in atomic Hubbard and spin models, forming approximate unitary $n$-designs, and their application to the measurement of Rényi entropies. We generalize our protocol presented in [Elben2017: arXiv:1709.05060, to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett.] to a broad class of atomic and spin lattice models. We further present an in-depth numerical and analytical study of experimental imperfections, including the effect of decoherence and statistical errors, and discuss connections of our approach with many-body quantum…
We investigate the situation when a normal positive linear unital map on a semifinite von Neumann algebra leaving the trace invariant does not change fixed quantum Renyi's entropy of the density of a normal state. It is also shown that such a map does not change the entropy of any density if and only if it is a Jordan *-isomorphism on the algebra.
The quantum Renyi relative entropies play a prominent role in quantum information theory, finding applications in characterizing error exponents and strong converse exponents for quantum hypothesis testing and quantum communication theory. On a different thread, quantum Gaussian states have been intensely investigated theoretically, motivated by the fact that they are more readily accessible in the laboratory than are other, more exotic quantum states. In this paper, we derive formulas for the quantum Renyi relative entropies of quantum Gaussian states. We consider both the traditional (Petz) …
We show that the new quantum extension of Renyi's α-relative entropies, introduced recently by Muller-Lennert, Dupuis, Szehr, Fehr and Tomamichel, J. Math. Phys. 54, 122203, (2013), and Wilde, Winter, Yang, Commun. Math. Phys. 331, (2014), have an operational interpretation in the strong converse problem of quantum hypothesis testing. Together with related results for the direct part of quantum hypothesis testing, known as the quantum Hoeffding bound, our result suggests that the operationally relevant definition of the quantum Renyi relative entropies depends on the parameter α: for α<1, the …
This work presents a generalization of the Koashi-Winter relation for $α$-Renyi entropies. This result is based on the Renyi\apos s entropy version of quantum Jensen Shannon divergence. By means of this definition, a classical correlations quantifier $C_α(ρ_{AB}) = \sup_{ξ_{AB}^{M_B}} Q_α(ξ_{AB}^{M_B})$ is proposed, where the optimization is taken over the ensembles $ξ_{AB}^{M_B}$ created by the outputs of the local measurement process. The main result is applied to the capacity of a quantum classical channel over a tripartite pure state $ψ_{ABE}$, that is rated above in function of the probab…
Quantum entanglement is one essential element to characterize many-body quantum systems. However, the entanglement measures are mostly discussed in Hermitian systems. Here, we propose a natural extension of entanglement and Rényi entropies to non-Hermitian quantum systems. There have been other proposals for the computation of these quantities, which are distinct from what is proposed in the current paper. We demonstrate the proposed entanglement quantities which are referred to as generic entanglement and Rényi entropies. These quantities capture the desired entanglement properties in non-Her…
We introduce a quantum Monte Carlo algorithm to measure the Rényi entanglement entropies in systems of interacting bosons in the continuum. This approach is based on a path integral ground state method that can be applied to interacting itinerant bosons in any spatial dimension with direct relevance to experimental systems of quantum fluids. We demonstrate how it may be used to compute spatial mode entanglement, particle partitioned entanglement, and the entanglement of particles, providing insights into quantum correlations generated by fluctuations, indistinguishability and interactions. We …
This is an expanded version of the short report arXiv:1401.0539, where we stud- ied the (Renyi) entanglement entropies for the excited state defined by acting a given local operator on the ground state. We introduced the (Renyi) entanglement entropies of given local operators which measure the degrees of freedom of local operators and characterize them in conformal field theories from the viewpoint of quantum entanglement. In present paper, we explain how to compute them in free massless scalar field theories and we also investigate their time evolution. The results are interpreted in terms of…
We present a general scheme for the calculation of the Renyi entropy of a subsystem in quantum many-body models that can be efficiently simulated via quantum Monte Carlo. When the simulation is performed at very low temperature, the above approach delivers the entanglement Renyi entropy of the subsystem, and it allows to explore the crossover to the thermal Renyi entropy as the temperature is increased. We implement this scheme explicitly within the Stochastic Series expansion as well as within path-integral Monte Carlo, and apply it to quantum spin and quantum rotor models. In the case of qua…
We compute thermal corrections to Rényi entropies of $d$ dimensional conformal field theories on spheres. Consider the $n$th Rényi entropy for a cap of opening angle $2 θ$ on $S^{d-1}$. From a Boltzmann sum decomposition and the operator-state correspondence, the leading correction is related to a certain two-point correlation function of the operator (not equal to the identity) with smallest scaling dimension. More specifically, via a conformal map, the correction can be expressed in terms of the two-point function on a certain conical space with opening angle $2πn$. In the case of free confo…
Ryu and Takayanagi conjectured a formula for the entanglement (von Neumann) entropy of an arbitrary spatial region in an arbitrary holographic field theory. The von Neumann entropy is a special case of a more general class of entropies called Renyi entropies. Using Euclidean gravity, Fursaev computed the entanglement Renyi entropies (EREs) of an arbitrary spatial region in an arbitrary holographic field theory, and thereby derived the RT formula. We point out, however, that his EREs are incorrect, since his putative saddle points do not in fact solve the Einstein equation. We remedy this situa…
We discuss some properties of the generalized entropies, called Renyi entropies and their application to the case of continuous distributions. In particular it is shown that these measures of complexity can be divergent, however, their differences are free from these divergences thus enabling them to be good candidates for the description of the extension and the shape of continuous distributions. We apply this formalism to the projection of wave functions onto the coherent state basis, i.e. to the Husimi representation. We also show how the localization properties of the Husimi distribution o…
