We compute the quantum Renyi relative entropies in an infinite spinless fermionic chain with a defect. Doing a numerical analysis we will show that the resulting quantity depends non trivially on the effective central charge of the theory. Moreover, we will see that an explicit analytic expression can be written for all of them and from that, one can read the quantum fidelity and the relative entropy.
Renyi entropies S_q are useful measures of quantum entanglement; they can be calculated from traces of the reduced density matrix raised to power q, with q>=0. For (d+1)-dimensional conformal field theories, the Renyi entropies across S^{d-1} may be extracted from the thermal partition functions of these theories on either (d+1)-dimensional de Sitter space or R x H^d, where H^d is the d-dimensional hyperbolic space. These thermal partition functions can in turn be expressed as path integrals on branched coverings of the (d+1)-dimensional sphere and S^1 x H^d, respectively. We calculate the Ren…
Entanglement entropy in even dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) contains well-known universal terms arising from the conformal anomaly. Renyi entropies are natural generalizations of the entanglement entropy that are much less understood. Above two spacetime dimensions, the universal terms in the Renyi entropies are unknown for general entangling geometries. We conjecture a new structure in the dependence of the four-dimensional Renyi entropies on the intrinsic and extrinsic geometry of the entangling surface. We provide evidence for this conjecture by direct numerical computations in…
Quantum Renyi relative entropies provide a one-parameter family of distances between density matrices, which generalizes the relative entropy and the fidelity. We study these measures for renormalization group flows in quantum field theory. We derive explicit expressions in free field theory based on the real time approach. Using monotonicity properties, we obtain new inequalities that need to be satisfied by consistent renormalization group trajectories in field theory. These inequalities play the role of a second law of thermodynamics, in the context of renormalization group flows. Finally, …
We discuss the Renyi entanglement entropies of descendant states in critical one-dimensional systems with boundaries, that map to boundary conformal field theories in the scaling limit. We unify the previous conformal-field-theory approaches to describe primary and descendant states in systems with both open and closed boundaries. We provide universal expressions for the first two descendants in the identity family. We apply our technique to critical systems belonging to different universality classes with non-trivial boundary conditions that preserve conformal invariance, and find excellent a…
We compute thermal corrections to Rényi entropies of $d$ dimensional conformal field theories on spheres. Consider the $n$th Rényi entropy for a cap of opening angle $2 θ$ on $S^{d-1}$. From a Boltzmann sum decomposition and the operator-state correspondence, the leading correction is related to a certain two-point correlation function of the operator (not equal to the identity) with smallest scaling dimension. More specifically, via a conformal map, the correction can be expressed in terms of the two-point function on a certain conical space with opening angle $2πn$. In the case of free confo…
Ryu and Takayanagi conjectured a formula for the entanglement (von Neumann) entropy of an arbitrary spatial region in an arbitrary holographic field theory. The von Neumann entropy is a special case of a more general class of entropies called Renyi entropies. Using Euclidean gravity, Fursaev computed the entanglement Renyi entropies (EREs) of an arbitrary spatial region in an arbitrary holographic field theory, and thereby derived the RT formula. We point out, however, that his EREs are incorrect, since his putative saddle points do not in fact solve the Einstein equation. We remedy this situa…
This paper introduces "swiveled Renyi entropies" as an alternative to the Renyi entropic quantities put forward in [Berta et al., Phys. Rev. A 91, 022333 (2015)]. What distinguishes the swiveled Renyi entropies from the prior proposal of Berta et al. is that there is an extra degree of freedom: an optimization over unitary rotations with respect to particular fixed bases (swivels). A consequence of this extra degree of freedom is that the swiveled Renyi entropies are ordered, which is an important property of the Renyi family of entropies. The swiveled Renyi entropies are however generally dis…
Relative entropy is a measure of distinguishability for quantum states, and plays a central role in quantum information theory. The family of Renyi entropies generalizes to Renyi relative entropies that include as special cases most entropy measures used in quantum information theory. We construct a Euclidean path-integral approach to Renyi relative entropies in conformal field theory, then compute the fidelity and the relative entropy of states in one spatial dimension at zero and finite temperature using a replica trick. In contrast to the entanglement entropy, the relative entropy is free o…
The equilibrium distributions of probabilities providing maximality of Renyi and Tsallis entropies are rederived. New S-forms of them are found which are normalised with corresponding entropies in contrast to the usual Z-forms normalised with partition functions.
It is shown that Lesche's conclusions on instability of the Renyi entropy are the same for the Tsallis entropy, as well. Moreover, they are unjustified for both entropies.
Entropy is a fundamental concept in equilibrium statistical mechanics, yet its origin in the non-equilibrium dynamics of isolated quantum systems is not fully understood. A strong consensus is emerging around the idea that the stationary thermodynamic entropy is the von Neumann entanglement entropy of a large subsystem embedded in an infinite system. Also motivated by cold-atom experiments, here we consider the generalisation to Renyi entropies. We develop a new technique to calculate the diagonal Renyi entropy in the quench action formalism. In the spirit of the replica treatment for the enta…
The growth of Renyi entropies after the injection of energy into a correlated system provides a window upon the dynamics of its entanglement properties. We develop here a simulation scheme by which this growth can be determined in Luttinger liquids systems with arbitrary interactions, even those introducing gaps into the liquid. We apply this scheme to an experimentally relevant quench in the sine-Gordon field theory. While for short times we provide an analytic expression for the growth of the second and third Renyi entropy, to access longer times, we combine our scheme with truncated spectru…
The quantum Renyi relative entropies play a prominent role in quantum information theory, finding applications in characterizing error exponents and strong converse exponents for quantum hypothesis testing and quantum communication theory. On a different thread, quantum Gaussian states have been intensely investigated theoretically, motivated by the fact that they are more readily accessible in the laboratory than are other, more exotic quantum states. In this paper, we derive formulas for the quantum Renyi relative entropies of quantum Gaussian states. We consider both the traditional (Petz) …
We discuss entanglement and critical properties of the spin-3/2 XXZ chain in its entire gapless region. Employing density-matrix renormalization group calculations combined with different methods based on level spectroscopy, correlation functions and entanglement entropies, we determine the sound velocity and the Luttinger parameter of the model as a function of the anisotropy parameter. Then, we focus on entanglement properties by systematically studying the behavior of Rényi entropies under both open and periodic boundary conditions, providing further evidence of recent findings about entang…
I give some scalar field theory calculations on a d-dimensional lune of arbitrary angle, evaluating, numerically, the effective action which is expressed as a simple quadrature, for conformal coupling. Using this, the entanglement and Renyi entropies are computed. Massive fields are also considered and a renormalisation to make the (one-loop) effective action vanish for infinite mass is suggested and used, not entirely successfully. However a universal coefficient is derived from the large mass expansion. From the deformation of the corresponding lune result, I conjecture that the effective ac…
We implement a Wang-Landau sampling technique in quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) for the purpose of calculating the Renyi entanglement entropies and associated mutual information. The algorithm converges an estimate for an analogue to the density of states for Stochastic Series Expansion QMC allowing a direct calculation of Renyi entropies without explicit thermodynamic integration. We benchmark results for the mutual information on two-dimensional (2D) isotropic and anisotropic Heisenberg models, 2D transverse field Ising model, and 3D Heisenberg model, confirming a critical scaling of the mutual i…
We investigate the scaling of the Rényi $α$-entropies in one-dimensional gapped quantum spin models. We show that the block entropies with $α> 2$ violate the area law monotonicity and exhibit damped oscillations. Depending on the existence of a factorized ground state, the oscillatory behavior occurs either below factorization or it extends indefinitely. The anomalous scaling corresponds to an entanglement-driven order that is independent of ground-state degeneracy and is revealed by a nonlocal order parameter defined as the sum of the single-copy entanglement over all blocks.
In this work, we study the Renyi-alpha entropies S_{alpha}(\hat{rho}) = (1 - alpha)^{-1} \ln{Tr(\hat{rho}^{alpha})} of quantum states for N bosons in the phase-space representation. With the help of the Bopp rule, we derive the entropies of Gaussian states in closed form for positive integers alpha = 2,3,4, ... and then, with the help of the analytic continuation, acquire the closed form also for real values of alpha > 0. The quantity S_2(\hat{rho}), primarily studied in the literature, will then be a special case of our finding. Subsequently we acquire the Renyi-alpha entropies, with positive…
Bashkirov's comments (cond-mat/0410667) on the paper [S. Abe, Phys. Rev. E 66, 046134 (2002)] are all refuted. In addition, it is discussed that the Renyi entropy is irrelevant to generalization of Boltzmann-Gibbs statistical mechanics for complex systems.
In recent years entanglement measures, such as the von Neumann and the Rényi entropies, provided a unique opportunity to access elusive feature of quantum many-body systems. However, extracting entanglement properties analytically, experimentally, or in numerical simulations can be a formidable task. Here, by combining the replica trick and the Jarzynski equality we devise a new effective out-of-equilibrium protocol for measuring the equilibrium Rényi entropies. The key idea is to perform a quench in the geometry of the replicas. The Rényi entropies are obtained as the exponential average of t…
We study the Rényi entropies in the spin-$1/2$ anisotropic Heisenberg chain after a quantum quench starting from the Néel state. The quench action method allows us to obtain the stationary Rényi entropies for arbitrary values of the index $α$ as generalised free energies evaluated over a calculable thermodynamic macrostate depending on $α$. We work out this macrostate for several values of $α$ and of the anisotropy $Δ$ by solving the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations. By varying $α$ different regions of the Hamiltonian spectrum are accessed. The two extremes are $α\to\infty$ for which the t…
Oikonomou [Physica A 386 (2007) 119] has published a calculation which purports to show that the Tsallis and Renyi entropies can be obtained from the generalized multinomial coefficients. In this paper, we prove that the method of generalized multinomial coefficients failed to determine the Tsallis entropy at equilibrium. Moreover, it is shown that Oikonomou's analysis contains mistakes which led him to misleading statements related to the Jaynes principle of maximum entropy, the Tsallis and the Renyi statistics.
We studied the Sharma-Mittal relative entropy and showed that its physical meaning is the free energy difference between the off-equilibrium and equilibrium distributions. Unfortunately, Sharma-Mittal relative entropy may acquire this physical interpretation only in the limiting case when both parameters approach to 1 in which case it approaches Kullback-Leibler entropy. We also note that this is exactly how Rényi relative entropy behaves in the thermostatistical framework thereby suggesting that Sharma-Mittal entropy must be thought to be a step beyond not both Tsallis and Rényi entropies but…
We investigate the steady-state Rényi entanglement entropies after a quench from a piecewise homogeneous initial state in integrable models. In the quench protocol two macroscopically different chains (leads) are joined together at the initial time, and the subsequent dynamics is studied. We study the entropies of a finite subsystem at the interface between the two leads. The density of Rényi entropies coincides with that of the entropies of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) that describes the interface between the chains. By combining the Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD) treatment of the qu…
We show that Renyi entropies of subregions can be used to distinguish when the entire system is in a microcanonical ensemble from when it is in a canonical ensemble, at least in theories holographically dual to gravity. Simple expressions are provided for these Renyi entropies in a particular thermodynamic limit with high energy density and fixed fractional size of the subregion. Holographically, the Renyi entropies are determined by the areas of cosmic branes inserted into the bulk spacetime. They differ between a microcanonical and a canonical ensemble because the two ensembles provide diffe…
I first calculate the charged spherical Renyi entropy by a numerical method that does not require knowledge of any eigenvalue degeneracies, and applies to all odd dimensions. An image method is used to relate the full sphere values to those for an integer covering, n. It is shown to be equivalent to a `transformation' property of the zeta--function. The infinite limit is explicitly constructed analytically and a relation deduced between the limits of corner coefficients and the effective action (free energy) which generalises, for free fields, a result of Bueno, Myers and Witczak--Krempa and E…
We analytically evaluate the Renyi entropies for the two dimensional free boson CFT. The CFT is considered to be compactified on a circle and at finite temperature. The Renyi entropies S_n are evaluated for a single interval using the two point function of bosonic twist fields on a torus. For the case of the compact boson, the sum over the classical saddle points results in the Riemann-Siegel theta function associated with the A_{n-1} lattice. We then study the Renyi entropies in the decompactification regime. We show that in the limit when the size of the interval becomes the size of the spat…
Parvan [arXiv:0911.0383v1] [1] has recently presented some calculations in order to demonstrate the incorrectness of the results obtained from the generalized multinomial coefficients (GMC) presented in Ref. [2]. According to Parvan, the aforementioned approach of studying maximum entropy probability distributions is erroneous. In this comment I demonstrate that Parvan's arguments do not hold true and that the obtained results from GMC do not present either mathematical or physical discrepancies.

The Shannon and the Renyi entropies of the ground state wavefunction in the pure and in the random quantum Ising chain are studied via the self-dual Fernandez-Pacheco real-space renormalization procedure. In particular, we analyze the critical behavior of the leading extensive term at the quantum phase transition : the derivative with respect to the control parameter is found to be logarithmically divergent in the pure case, and to display a cusp singularity in the random case. This cusp singularity for the random case is also derived via the Strong Disorder Renormalization approach.
The q-exponential distributions, which are generalizations of the Zipf-Mandelbrot power-law distribution, are frequently encountered in complex systems at their stationary states. From the viewpoint of the principle of maximum entropy, they can apparently be derived from three different generalized entropies: the Renyi entropy, the Tsallis entropy, and the normalized Tsallis entropy. Accordingly, mere fittings of observed data by the q-exponential distributions do not lead to identification of the correct physical entropy. Here, stabilities of these entropies, i.e., their behaviors under arbit…
The LMC complexity, an indicator of complexity based on a probabilistic description, is revisited. A straightforward approach allows us to establish the time evolution of this indicator in a near-equilibrium situation and gives us a new insight for interpreting the LMC complexity for a general non equilibrium system. Its relationship with the Renyi entropies is also explained. One of the advantages of this indicator is that its calculation does not require a considerable computational effort in many cases of physical and biological interest.
In quantum mechanics, stringnet condensed states - a family of prototypical states exhibiting non-trivial topological order - can be classified via their long-range entanglement properties, in particular topological corrections to the prevalent area law of the entanglement entropy. Here we consider classical analogs of such stringnet models whose partition function is given by an equal-weight superposition of classical stringnet configurations. Our analysis of the Shannon and Renyi entropies for a bipartition of a given system reveals that the prevalent volume law for these classical entropies…
Entropies must correspond to mean values for them to be measurable. The Shannon entropy corresponds to the weighted arithmetic mean, whereas the Renyi entropy corresponds to the exponential mean. These means refer to code lengths, which are converted into entropies by replacing the length of a sequence by the negative logarithm of the probability of its occurrence. Only affine and exponential generating functions of means preserve the property of additivity and invariance under translations, and hence are Kolmogorov-Nagumo functions, resulting in the Shannon and Renyi entropies, respectively. …
We present a new method to compute Rényi entropies in one-dimensional critical systems. The null-vector conditions on the twist fields in the cyclic orbifold allow us to derive a differential equation for their correlation functions. The latter are then determined by standard bootstrap techniques. We apply this method to the calculation of various Rényi entropies in the non-unitary Yang-Lee model.
We investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of the symmetry-resolved Rényi entropies in a one-dimensional gas of non-interacting spinless fermions by means of quantum generalised hydrodynamics, which recently allowed to obtain very accurate results for the total entanglement in inhomogeneous quench settings. Although our discussion is valid for any quench setting accessible with quantum generalised hydrodynamics, we focus on the case of a quantum gas initially prepared in a bipartite fashion and subsequently let evolve unitarily with a hopping Hamiltonian. For this system, we characterise the …
Counting problems such as determining how many bit strings satisfy a given Boolean logic formula are notoriously hard. In many cases, even getting an approximate count is difficult. Here we propose that entanglement, a common concept in quantum information theory, may serve as a telltale of the difficulty of counting exactly or approximately. We quantify entanglement by using Renyi entropies S(q), which we define by bipartitioning the logic variables of a generic satisfiability problem. We conjecture that S(q\rightarrow 0) provides information about the difficulty of counting solutions exactly…
We investigate the dynamics of quantum entanglement after a global quench and uncover a qualitative difference between the behavior of the von Neumann entropy and higher Rényi entropies. We argue that the latter generically grow \emph{sub-ballistically}, as $\propto\sqrt{t}$, in systems with diffusive transport. We provide strong evidence for this in both a U$(1)$ symmetric random circuit model and in a paradigmatic non-integrable spin chain, where energy is the sole conserved quantity. We interpret our results as a consequence of local quantum fluctuations in conserved densities, whose behavi…
We show how entanglement entropies allow for the estimation of quasi-long-range order in one dimensional systems whose low-energy physics is well captured by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid universality class. First, we check our procedure in the exactly solvable XXZ spin-1/2 chain in its entire critical region, finding very good agreement with Bethe ansatz results. Then, we show how phase transitions between different dominant orders may be efficiently estimated by considering the superfluid-charge density wave transition in a system of dipolar bosons. Finally, we discuss the application of thi…
Entanglement measures such as the entanglement entropy have become an indispensable tool to identify the fundamental character of ground states of interacting quantum many-body systems. For systems of interacting spin or bosonic degrees of freedom much recent progress has been made not only in the analytical description of their respective entanglement entropies but also in their numerical classification. Systems of interacting fermionic degrees of freedom however have proved to be more difficult to control, in particular with regard to the numerical understanding of their entanglement propert…
Tsallis and Rényi entropy measures are two possible different generalizations of the Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy (or Shannon's information) but are not generalizations of each others. It is however the Sharma-Mittal measure, which was already defined in 1975 (B.D. Sharma, D.P. Mittal, J.Math.Sci \textbf{10}, 28) and which received attention only recently as an application in statistical mechanics (T.D. Frank & A. Daffertshofer, Physica A \textbf{285}, 351 & T.D. Frank, A.R. Plastino, Eur. Phys. J., B \textbf{30}, 543-549) that provides one possible unification. We will show how this generalization…
We study the robustness of functionals of probability distributions such as the Rényi and nonadditive S_q entropies, as well as the q-expectation values under small variations of the distributions. We focus on three important types of distribution functions, namely (i) continuous bounded (ii) discrete with finite number of states, and (iii) discrete with infinite number of states. The physical concept of robustness is contrasted with the mathematically stronger condition of stability and Lesche-stability for functionals. We explicitly demonstrate that, in the case of continuous distributions, …
Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we compute the participation (Shannon-Rényi) entropies for groundstate wave functions of Heisenberg antiferromagnets for one-dimensional (line) subsystems of length $L$ embedded in two-dimensional ($L\times L$) square lattices. We also study the line entropy at finite temperature, i.e. of the diagonal elements of the density matrix, for three-dimensional ($L\times L\times L$) cubic lattices. The breaking of SU(2) symmetry is clearly captured by a universal logarithmic scaling term $l_q\ln L$ in the Rényi entropies, in good agreement with the recent field-…
