We show that a perfect absorber/thermal emitter exhibiting an absorption peak of 99.9% can be achieved in metallic nanostructures that can be easily fabricated. The very high absorption is maintained for large angles with a minimal shift in the center frequency and can be tuned throughout the visible and near-infrared regime by scaling the nanostructure dimensions. The stability of the spectral features at high temperatures is tested by simulations using a range of material parameters.
We demonstrated an ultra-broadband, polarization-insensitive and wide-angle metamaterial absorber for terahertz (THz) frequencies using arrays of truncated pyramid unit structure made of metal-dielectric multilayer composite. In our design each sub-layer behaving as an effective waveguide is gradually modified in their lateral width to realize a wideband response by effectively stitching together the resonance bands of different waveguide modes. Experimentally, our five layer sample with a total thickness 21um is capable of producing a large absorptivity above 80% from 0.7 to 2.3 THz up to the…
High absorption in a wide frequency band has attracted considerable interest since their potential applications in frequency spectrum imaging systems and anti-radar cloaking. In this paper, a polarization-independent, ultra-broadband and omnidirectional terahertz absorber is proposed, fabricated and evaluated. It is experimentally demonstrated that an over 95% absorption can be obtained in the frequency range of 0.75~2.41 THz. Attributing to the multi-frequency destructive interference between the layers and the impedance-matching condition of the grating, five successive absorption peaks at 0…
A recursive scheme for the design of scatterers acting simultaneously as emitters and absorbers, such as lasers and coherent perfect absorbers in optics, at multiple prescribed frequencies is proposed. The approach is based on the assembly of non-Hermitian emitter and absorber units into self-dual emitter-absorber trimers at different composition levels, exploiting the simple structure of the corresponding transfer matrices. In particular, lifting the restriction to parity-time-symmetric setups enables the realization of emitter and absorber action at distinct frequencies and provides flexibil…
Comparative Analysis of THz Signal Emission from SiO$_2$/CoFeB/Metal Heterostructures: Wideband and High-Frequency THz Signal Advantage of PtBi-based Emitter
Recently, there has been growing interest in terahertz (THz) wave generation from liquids under optical excitation. Here, we propose and demonstrate the use of liquid lines in place of liquid films as THz emitters to boost THz signals. The geometry of the emitter eliminates the total internal reflection at the flat liquid-air interface. In addition, we observe that the polarity of the liquid has a significant influence on the THz wave generation. Alpha-pinene, a nonpolar liquid, offers much stronger THz radiation than water does. Besides paving the way to develop intense liquid THz sources, ou…
Additive manufactured THz optics have been introduced as an efficient alternative to their commercial counterparts. Among various additive manufacturing methods, stereolithography provides superior spatial resolution and surface finish. However, examples of stereolithographically fabricated components for THz applications are still scarce. In this paper, we report on the fabrication process and performance of a stereolithographically fabricated broadband absorber for the THz spectral range. Simple THz transmission experiments were carried out for the absorber and bulk reference samples. The ex…
We demonstrate saturable absorber behavior of n-type semiconductors GaAs, GaP and Ge in THz frequency range at room temperature using nonlinear THz spectroscopy. The saturation mechanism is based on a decrease in electron conductivity of semiconductors at high electron momentum states, due to conduction band nonparabolicity and scattering into satellite valleys in strong THz fields. Saturable absorber parameters, such as linear and non-saturable transmission, and saturation fluence, are extracted by fits to a classic saturable absorber model. Further, we observe THz pulse shortening, and an in…
Terahertz (THz) wave shows great potential in non-destructive testing, bio detection and cancer imaging. Recent progresses on THz wave near-field probes/apertures enable mechanically raster scanning of an object's surface in the near-field region, while an efficient, non-scanning, non-invasive, deeply sub-diffraction-limited imaging still remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate a THz near-field microscopy using a reconfigurable spintronic THz emitter array (STEA) with computational ghost imaging. By illuminating an object with the reconfigurable STEA in near field and computing the correlati…
Frequency Band of 0.5 THz to 1.1 THz (WR1.5 and WR1) is one of the promising bands when it comes to 6G. In this paper, we propose a novel metamaterial absorber suitable to be used at lower WR1 frequencies in TE mode. Alternatively, the design can be used as a strong absorber at lower Terahertz frequencies. In addition, when used in TM mode the absorber works as a perfect absorber at higher WR1 band.
Intersubband (ISB) transitions in semiconductor multi-quantum well (MQW) structures are promising candidates for the development of saturable absorbers at terahertz (THz) frequencies. Here, we exploit amplitude and phase-resolved two-dimensional (2D) THz spectroscopy on the sub-cycle time scale to observe directly the saturation dynamics and coherent control of ISB transitions in a metal-insulator MQW structure. Clear signatures of incoherent pump-probe and coherent four-wave mixing signals are recorded as a function of the peak electric field of the single-cycle THz pulses. All nonlinear sign…
Metallic spintronic THz emitters have become well-established for offering ultra-broadband, gap-less THz emission in a variety of excitation regimes, in combination with reliable fabrication and excellent scalability. However, so far, their potential for high-average-power excitation to reach strong THz fields at high repetition rates has not been thoroughly investigated. In this article, we explore the power scaling behavior of tri-layer spintronic emitters using an Yb-fiber excitation source, delivering an average power of 18.5 W at 400 kHz repetition rate, temporally compressed to a pulse d…
The implementation of terahertz (THz) wafer-level metadevices is critical to advance the science for applications including (I) integrated focal plane array which can image for biology and (II) integrated narrowband absorbers for high spectral resolution THz spectroscopy. Substantial progress has been made in the development of THz metamaterials; however, a wafer-level low-stress THz metadevices platform remains a challenge. This paper experimentally demonstrates a substrate-free THz metadevices platform adopting engineered Si-rich and low-stress silicon nitride (SiNx) thin films, achieving an…
In Terahertz (THz) technology, one of the long-standing challenges has been the formation of intense pulses covering the hard-to-access frequency range of 1-15 THz (so-called THz gap). This frequency band, lying between the electronically (<1 THz) and optically (>15 THz) accessible spectrum hosts a series of important collective modes and molecular fingerprints which cannot be fully accessed by present THz sources. While present high-energy THz sources are limited to 0.1-4 THz the accessibility to the entire THz gap with intense THz pulses would substantially broaden THz applications like live…
Metamaterial-based absorbers have been extensively investigated in the terahertz (THz) range with ever increasing performances. In this paper, we propose an all-dielectric THz absorber based on doped silicon. The unit cell consists of a silicon cross resonator with an internal cross-shaped air cavity. Numerical results suggest that the proposed absorber can operate from THz to mid-infrared, having an average power absorption of >95% between 0.6 and 10 THz. Experimental results using THz time-domain spectroscopy show a good agreement with simulations. The underlying mechanisms for broadband abs…

We present an absorber based sensing scheme at the terahertz frequencies and discuss optimized designs to achieve high frequency and amplitude sensitivities. The major advantage of a perfect metamaterial absorber as a sensor is the sensitive shift in the absorber re…
Polarization control of THz light is of paramount interest for the numerous applications offered in this frequency range. Recent developments in THz spintronic emitters allow for a very efficient broadband emission, and especially unique is their ability of THz polarization switching through magnetization control of the ferromagnetic layer. Here we present an improved scheme to achieve full 360° nearly coherent polarization rotation that does not require multipolar or rotating external magnetic bias nor complex cascaded emitters. By replacing the FM layer of the spintronic emitter with a caref…

The altered spontaneous emission of an emitter near an arbitrary body can be elucidated using an energy balance of the electromagnetic field. From a classical point of view it is trivial to show that the field scattered back from any body should alter the emission of the source. But it is not at all apparent that the total radiative and non-radiative decay in an arbitrary body can add to the vacuum decay rate of the emitter (i.e.) an increase of emission that is just as much as the body absorbs and radiates in all directions. This gives us an opportunity to revisit two other elegant classical …
A new approach is introduced to significantly improve the performance of thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems by using low-dimensional thermal emitters and photovoltaic (PV) cells. By reducing the thickness of both the emitter and the PV cell, strong spectral selectivity in both thermal emission and absorption can be achieved by confining photons in trapped waveguide modes inside the thin-films that act as thermal analogs to quantum wells. Simultaneously, photo-excited carriers travel shorter distances across the thin-films reducing bulk recombination losses resulting in a lower saturation current…
This article presents a novel approach for designing dual-band absorbers based on graphene and metallic metasurfaces for terahertz and mid-infrared regimes, respectively. The absorbers are composed of a two-dimensional (2D) array of square patches deposited on a dielectric film terminated by a metal plate. Using an analytical circuit model, we obtain closed-form relations for different parameters of the structure to achieve the dual-band absorber. Two absorption bands with obtained absorptivity of 98% at 0.55 and 1.54 THz for the graphene-based structure and 7 and 25 THz for the metallic-based…
Nanoscale pulsed light is highly desirable in nano-integrated optics. In this letter, we obtained femtosecond pulses with THz repetition frequency via the strong coupling between quantum emitters (QEs) and plasmonic resonators. Our structure consists of a V-groove (VG) plasmonic resonator and a nanowire embedded with two-level QEs. The influences of the incident light intensity and QE number density on the transmission response for this hybrid system are investigated through semi-classical theory and simulation. It is found that the transmission response can be modulated to the pulse form. The…

A gold layer was utilized as backside reflector and TOPAS as dielectric spacers. Circuit model of PGDAs and the developed Transmission Line Model (TLM) for the absorber is utilized to design the structure using impedance matching concept. The validity of the results of the device was confirmed by Finite Element Method (FEM). The structure absorbs both TE and TM polarizations. Furthermore, the obtained normalized absorption bandwidth is 148% with a bandwidth of 2.64 TH…

Terahertz (THz) metamaterials have been developed for THz sensing, detection, imaging, and many other functions due to their unusual absorbers. However, the unusual absorption spectra change with different incident angles. Thus, we designed and fabricated a focal plane array with metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure metamaterial absorbers for further research. The absorption spectrum with incident angles from 20 to 60 was measured using THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), and the experimental results reveal that the absorption spectrum changes with incident angle variations. A basic analy…
Engineered optical absorbers are of substantial interest for applications ranging from stray light reduction to energy conversion. We demonstrate a large-area (centimeter-scale) metamaterial that features near-unity frequency-selective absorption in the mid-infrared wavelength range. The metamaterial comprises a self-assembled porous structure known as an inverse opal, here made of silica. The structure's large volume fraction of voids, together with the vibrational resonances of silica in the mid-infrared spectral range, reduce the metamaterial's refractive index to close to that of air and i…
We present quasi-analytical solutions (QANS) of hybrid platform (HP) comprising metallic grating (MG) and stacked-dielectric layers for terahertz (THz) radiation. The QANS are validated by finite difference time domain simulation. It is found that the Wood anomalies induce the high-order spoof surface plasmon resonances in the HP. The QANS are applied to optimize new perfect absorber for THz sensing of large-area thin film with ultrahigh figure of merit reaching fifth order of magnitude for the film thickness 0.0001p (p: MG period). The first-order Wood's anomaly of the insulator layer and the…
We discuss the possibility of realizing utlrabroadband omnidirectional absorbers and angularly selective coherent thermal emitters based on properly patterned plasmonic metastructures. Instead of relying on resonant concentration effects that inherently limit the bandwidth, we base our design on the combination of two inherently nonresonant effects: plasmonic Brewster funneling and adiabatic plasmonic focusing. With this approach, we demonstrate compact, broadband absorption and emission spanning terahertz, infrared and optical frequencies, ideal for various energy and defense applications.
The present work deals with a theoretical research on the emission and radiation properties of a dipole emitter source close to a dimer graphene plasmonic antenna. Modification of the radiation and the quantum efficiencies resulting from varying the position of the emitter and the orientation of its dipole moment are calculated by using a rigorous electromagnetic method based on Green's second identity. Large enhancements in the emission and the radiation of the emitter occur due to the coupling with the antenna surface plasmons in the spectral region from 4THz to 15THz. Our results show that …
THz pulses are generated from femtosecond pulse-excited ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic spintronic heterostructures via inverse spin Hall effect. The contribution from ultrafast demagnetization/remagnetization is extremely weak, in the comparison. The highest possible THz signal strength from spintronic THz emitters is limited by the optical damage threshold of the corresponding heterostructures. The THz generation efficiency does not saturate with the excitation fluence even up till the damage threshold. Bilayer (Fe, CoFeB)/(Pt, Ta) based FM/NM spintronic heterostructures have been studied for an o…
THz-spectroscopy is an attractive imaging tool for scientific research, especially in life science, offering non-destructive interaction with matter due to its low photon energies. However, wavelengths above $100μm$ principally limit its spatial resolution in the far-field by diffraction to this regime, making it not sufficient to image biological cells in the micrometer scale. Therefore, super-resolution imaging techniques are required to overcome this restriction. Near-field-imaging using spintronic emitters offers the most feasible approach because of its simplicity and potential for wide-r…
We report here fabrication of interdigitated photoconductive antenna (iPCA) terahertz (THz) emitters based on plasmonic electrode design. Novel design of this iPCA enables it to work without microlens array focusing, which is otherwise required for photo excitation of selective photoconductive regions to avoid the destructive interference of emitted THz radiation from oppositely biased regions. Benefit of iPCA over single active region PCA is that photo excitation can be done at larger area, hence avoiding the saturation effected at higher optical excitation density. The emitted THz radiation …
Spin-based terahertz (THz) emitters, utilizing the inverse spin Hall effect, are ultra-modern sources for the generation of THz electromagnetic radiation. To make a powerful emitter having large THz amplitude and bandwidth, fundamental understanding in terms of microscopic models is essential. This study reveals important factors to engineer the THz emission amplitude and bandwidth in epitaxial Pt/Fe emitters grown on MgO and MgAl$_2$O$_4$ (MAO) substrates, where the choice of the substrate plays an important role. The THz amplitude and bandwidth are affected by the induced strain in the Fe sp…
A multi-element interdigitated photoconductive emitter for broadband THz polarization rotation is proposed and experimentally verified. The device consists of separate pixels for the emission of horizontally and vertically polarized THz radiation. The broadband (0.3-5.0THz) nature of the device is demonstrated, and the polarization angle of the generated far-field THz radiation is shown to be readily controlled by varying the relative bias voltage applied to the horizontally and vertically emitting pixels. The device is scalable in design, and with its simple method of polarization rotation it…
The sun (~6000 K) and outer space (~3 K) are the original heat source and sink for human beings on Earth. The energy applications of absorbing solar irradiation and harvesting the coldness of outer space for energy utilization have attracted considerable interest from researchers. However, combining these two functions in a static device for continuous energy harvesting is unachievable due to the intrinsic infrared spectral conflict. In this study, we developed spectral self-adaptive absorber/emitter (SSA/E) for daytime photothermal and nighttime radiative sky cooling modes depending on the ph…
A nearly omni-directional THz absorber for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations is proposed. Through the excitation of magnetic polariton in a metal-dielectric layer, the incident light is perfectly absorbed in a thin thickness which is about 25 times smaller than the resonance wavelength. By simply stacking several such structural layers with different geometrical dimensions, the bandwidth of this strong absorption can be effectively enhanced due to the hybridization of magnetic polaritons in different layers.
Terahertz (THz) sciences and technologies have contributed to a rapid development of a wide range of applications and expanded the frontiers in fundamental science. Spintronic terahertz emitters offer conceptual advantages since the spin orientation in the magnetic layer can be easily controlled either by the externally applied magnetic field or by the internal magnetic field distribution determined by the specific shape of the magnetic elements. Here, we report a switchable terahertz source based on micropatterned magnetic heterostructures driven by femtosecond laser pulses. We show that the …
Spintronic terahertz (THz) emitter provides the advantages such as apparently broader spectrum, significantly lower cost, and more flexibility in compared with the commercial THz emitters, and thus attracts great interests recently. In past few years, efforts have been made in optimizing the material composition and structure geometry, and the conversion efficiency has been improved close to that of ZnTe crystal. One of the drawbacks of the current designs is the rather limited laser absorption - more than 50% energy is wasted and the conversion efficiency is thus limited. Here, we theoretical…
A 2D simulation for the lateral photo-Dember effect is used to calculate the THz emission of metallic nanostructures due to ultrafast diffusion of carriers in order to realize a series of THz emitters.
Phase-stable electromagnetic pulses in the THz frequency range offer several unique capabilities in time-resolved spectroscopy. However, the diversity of their application is limited by the covered spectral bandwidth. In particular, the upper frequency limit of photoconductive emitters - the most widespread technique in THz spectroscopy - reaches only up to 7 THz in regular transmission mode due to the absorption by infrared-active optical phonons. Here, we present ultra-broadband (extending up to 70 THz) THz emission from Au implanted Ge emitter which is compatible with a fibre laser operatin…
A portion of the electromagnetic wave spectrum between $\sim 0.1$ and $\sim 10$ terahertz (THz) suffers from the lack of powerful, effective, easy-to-use and inexpensive emitters, detectors and mixers. We propose a multilayer graphene -- boron-nitride heterostructure which is able to emit radiation in the frequency range $\sim 0.1-30$ THz with the power density up to $\sim 0.5$ W/cm$^2$ at room temperature. The proposed device is extremely thin, light, flexible, almost invisible and may completely cover the needs of science and technology in the sources of terahertz radiation.
Spintronic emitters are a unique class of terahertz (THz) sources due to their quasi-two-dimensional geometry and thereby their capability to couple to resonator near fields. Global excitation of the emitters often obstructs the intricate details of the coupling mechanisms between local THz dipoles and the individual modes of resonator structures. Here, we demonstrate the spatial mapping of the coupling strength between a local terahertz source on a spintronic emitter and far-field light mediated by a structured metallic environment. For a bow-tie geometry, experimental results are reproduced …
