Spintronic terahertz (THz) emitter provides the advantages such as apparently broader spectrum, significantly lower cost, and more flexibility in compared with the commercial THz emitters, and thus attracts great interests recently. In past few years, efforts have been made in optimizing the material composition and structure geometry, and the conversion efficiency has been improved close to that of ZnTe crystal. One of the drawbacks of the current designs is the rather limited laser absorption - more than 50% energy is wasted and the conversion efficiency is thus limited. Here, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel device that fully utilizes the laser intensity and significantly improves the conversion efficiency. The device, which consists of a metal-dielectric photonic crystal structure, utilizes the interference between the multiple scattering waves to simultaneously suppress the reflection and transmission of the laser, and to reshape the laser field distributions. The experimentally detected laser absorption and THz generations show one-to-one correspondence with the theoretical calculations. We achieve the strongest THz pulse emission that presents a 1.7 times improvement compared to the currently designed spintronic emitter. This work opens a new pathway to improve the performance of spintronic THz emitter from the perspective of optics.
A portion of the electromagnetic wave spectrum between $\sim 0.1$ and $\sim 10$ terahertz (THz) suffers from the lack of powerful, effective, easy-to-use and inexpensive emitters, detectors and mixers. We propose a multilayer graphene -- boron-nitride heterostructure which is able to emit radiation in the frequency range $\sim 0.1-30$ THz with the power density up to $\sim 0.5$ W/cm$^2$ at room temperature. The proposed device is extremely thin, light, flexible, almost invisible and may completely cover the needs of science and technology in the sources of terahertz radiation.
Identifying materials with an efficient spin-to-charge conversion is crucial for future spintronic applications. The spin Hall effect is a central mechanism as it allows for the interconversion of spin and charge currents. Spintronic material research aims at maximizing its efficiency, quantified by the spin Hall angle $Θ_{\textrm{SH}}$ and the spin-current relaxation length $λ_{\textrm{rel}}$. We develop an all-optical method with large sample throughput that allows us to extract $Θ_{\textrm{SH}}$ and $λ_{\textrm{rel}}$. Employing terahertz spectroscopy, we characterize magnetic metallic hete…
We report here fabrication of interdigitated photoconductive antenna (iPCA) terahertz (THz) emitters based on plasmonic electrode design. Novel design of this iPCA enables it to work without microlens array focusing, which is otherwise required for photo excitation of selective photoconductive regions to avoid the destructive interference of emitted THz radiation from oppositely biased regions. Benefit of iPCA over single active region PCA is that photo excitation can be done at larger area, hence avoiding the saturation effected at higher optical excitation density. The emitted THz radiation …
Terahertz electromagnetic radiation is extremely useful for numerous applications such as imaging and spectroscopy. Therefore, it is highly desirable to have an efficient table-top emitter covering the 1-to-30-THz window whilst being driven by a low-cost, low-power femtosecond laser oscillator. So far, all solid-state emitters solely exploit physics related to the electron charge and deliver emission spectra with substantial gaps. Here, we take advantage of the electron spin to realize a conceptually new terahertz source which relies on tailored fundamental spintronic and photonic phenomena in…

The key technological and scientific challenge of THz spintronic emitters is to increase their intensity and frequency bandwidth. Our work reveals the factors to engineer spintronic Terahertz generation by introducing the scattering lifetime and the interface transmission for spin polarized, non-equilibrium electrons. We clarify the influence of the electron-defect scattering lifetime on the spectral shape and the interface transmission …
The strong-coupling regime between an electronic transition and the photonic mode of a optical resonator manifests itself in the lifting of the degeneracy between the two modes and the creation of two polariton states with mixed optical and electronic character. This phenomenon has been studied in atoms, excitons in semiconductors and quantum electrodynamics circuits based on Josephson junctions. Recently, there is also strong interest to study similar effects using intersubband transitions in quantum wells in the terahertz, where the ultra strong coupling regime can be reached and new physica…
Spintronic emitters are a unique class of terahertz (THz) sources due to their quasi-two-dimensional geometry and thereby their capability to couple to resonator near fields. Global excitation of the emitters often obstructs the intricate details of the coupling mechanisms between local THz dipoles and the individual modes of resonator structures. Here, we demonstrate the spatial mapping of the coupling strength between a local terahertz source on a spintronic emitter and far-field light mediated by a structured metallic environment. For a bow-tie geometry, experimental results are reproduced …
We report on generation of pulsed broadband terahertz radiation utilizing the inverse spin Hall effect in Fe/Pt bilayers on MgO and sapphire substrates. The emitter was optimized with respect to layer thickness, growth parameters, substrates and geometrical arrangement. The experimentally determined optimum layer thicknesses were in qualitative agreement with simulations of the spin current induced in the ferromagnetic layer. Our model takes into account generation of spin polarization, spin diffusion and accumulation in Fe and Pt and electrical as well as optical properties of the bilayer sam…
To achieve a large terahertz (THz) amplitude from a spintronic THz emitter (STE), materials with 100\% spin polarisation such as Co-based Heusler compounds as the ferromagnetic layer are required. However, these compounds are known to loose their half-metallicity in the ultrathin film regime, as it is difficult to achieve L2$_1$ ordering, which has become a bottleneck for the film growth. Here, the successful deposition using room temperature DC sputtering of the L2$_1$ and B2 ordered phases of the Co$_2$FeAl full Heusler compound is reported. Co$_2$FeAl is used as ferromagnetic layer together…
Intrinsic Josephson junctions in high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 are known for their capability to emit high-power terahertz photons with widely tunable frequencies. Hotspots, as inhomogeneous temperature distributions across the junctions, are believed to play a critical role in synchronizing the gauge-invariant phase difference among the junctions, so as to achieve coherent strong emission. Previous optical imaging techniques have indirectly suggested that the hotspot temperature can go higher than the superconductor critical temperature. However, such optical approaches often …
We investigate the collective electron dynamics in a recently proposed graphene-based terahertz emitter under the influence of the radiative damping effect, which is included self-consistently in a molecular dynamics approach. We show that under appropriate conditions synchronization of the dynamics of single electrons takes place, leading to a rise of the oscillating component of the charge current. The synchronization time depends dramatically on the applied dc electric field and electron scattering rate, and is roughly inversely proportional to the radiative damping rate that is determined …
Terahertz (THz) sciences and technologies have contributed to a rapid development of a wide range of applications and expanded the frontiers in fundamental science. Spintronic terahertz emitters offer conceptual advantages since the spin orientation in the magnetic layer can be easily controlled either by the externally applied magnetic field or by the internal magnetic field distribution determined by the specific shape of the magnetic elements. Here, we report a switchable terahertz source based on micropatterned magnetic heterostructures driven by femtosecond laser pulses. We show that the …
We study theoretically the nonlinear optical properties of a semiconductor quantum well (QW) irradiated by a two-mode electromagnetic wave consisting of a strong resonant dressing field and a weak off-resonant driving field. In the considered strongly coupled electron-field system, the dressing field opens dynamic Stark gaps in the electron energy spectrum of the QW, whereas the driving field induces electron oscillations in the QW plane. Since the gapped electron spectrum restricts the amplitude of the oscillations, the emission of a frequency comb from the QW appears. Therefore, the doubly-d…
Employing electron spin instead of charge to develop spintronic devices holds the merits of low-power consumption in information technologies. Meanwhile, the demand for increasing speed in spintronics beyond current CMOS technology has further triggered intensive researches for ultrafast control of spins even up to unprecedent terahertz regime. The femtosecond laser has been emerging as a potential technique to generate an ultrafast spin-current burst for magnetization manipulation. However, there is a great challenge to establish all-optical control and monitor of the femtosecond transient sp…
We propose the use of dipolaritons -- quantum well excitons with large dipole moment, coupled to a planar microcavity -- for generating terahertz (THz) radiation. This is achieved by exciting the system with two THz detuned lasers that leads to dipole moment oscillations of the exciton polariton at the detuning frequency, thus generating a THz emission. We have optimized the structural parameters of a system with microcavity embedded AlGaAs double quantum wells and shown that the THz emission intensity is maximized if the laser frequencies both match different dipolariton states. The influence…

This includes: the application of multi-stacks of HM/FM junctions and the…
Recent studies in spintronics have highlighted ultrathin magnetic metallic multilayers as a novel and very promising class of broadband terahertz radiation sources. Such spintronic multilayers consist of ferromagnetic (FM) and non-magnetic (NM) thin films. When triggered by ultrafast laser pulses, they generate pulsed THz radiation due to the inverse spin-Hall effect, a mechanism that converts optically driven spin currents from the magnetized FM layer into transient transverse charge currents in the NM layer, resulting in THz emission. As THz emitters, FM/NM multilayers have been intensively …
Narrowband terahertz (THz) radiation is crucial for high-resolution spectral identification, but a narrowband THz source driven by femtosecond (fs) laser has remained scarce. Here, it is computationally predicted that a metal/dielectric/magnetoelastic heterostructure enables converting a fs laser pulse into a multi-cycle THz pulse with a narrow linewidth down to ~1.5 GHz, which is in contrast with the single-cycle, broadband THz pulse from the existing fs-laser-excited emitters. It is shown that such narrowband THz pulse originates from the excitation and long-distance transport of THz spin wa…

Here, we review THz phenomena related to spin dynamics in rare-earth orthoferrites, a class of materials promising for antiferromagnetic spintronics. We expand this topic into a description of four key elements. (1) We s…
The field of THz spintronics is a novel direction in the research field of spintronics that combines magnetism with optical physics and ultrafast photonics. The key technological and scientific challenges of THz spintronic emitters is to increase their intensity and frequency bandwidth. To achieve this the control of the source of the r…
An ultra-broadband THz emitter covering a wide range of frequencies from 0.1 to 10 THz is highly desired for spectroscopy applications. So far, spintronic THz emitters have been proven as one class of efficient THz sources with a broadband spectrum while the performance in the lower frequency range (0.1 to 0.5 THz) limits its applications. In this work, we demonstrate a novel concept of a current-enhanced broad spectrum from spintronic THz emitters combined with semiconductor materials. We observe a 2-3 order enhancement of the THz signals in a lower THz frequency range (0.1 to 0.5 THz), in ad…
We show that to correctly describe the ultrafast currents in spintronic THz emitters it is necessary to take charge equilibration into account. The charge current which is locally induced by a fs laser pulse and the inverse spin-Hall effect (ISHE) leads to ultrafast charging phenomena at the edge of the illuminated area. Subsequent discharging leads to a current backflow with a delay and a time constant that mainly depends on the conductivity of the emitter. On the one hand, only this delayed charge equilibration allows the detection of the primary current pulse via THz emission because an ins…
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a fundamental spintronic charge-to-charge-current conversion phenomenon and closely related to spin-to-charge-current conversion by the spin Hall effect. Future high-speed spintronic devices will crucially rely on such conversion effects at terahertz (THz) frequencies. Here, we reveal that the AHE remains operative from DC up to 40 THz with a flat frequency response in thin films of three technologically relevant magnetic materials: DyCo$_{5}$, Co$_{32}$Fe$_{68}$ and Gd$_{27}$Fe$_{73}$. We measure the frequency-dependent conductivity-tensor elements $σ_{xx}$ …
Terahertz spintronics offers the prospect of devices which are both faster and more energy-efficient. A promising route to achieve this goal is to exploit current-induced spin-orbit torques. However, the high-frequency properties of these quantities remain unexplored both experimentally and theoretically, within a realistic material-specific approach. Here we investigate the dynamical transverse components of the torques and uncover contributions longitudinal to the magnetic moment capable of changing its magnitude. We show that, while the torques can be drastically altered in the dynamical re…
We report about the anomalous Hall effect in 4f 3d metallic alloys measured using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The strength of the observed terahertz spin-dependent transport phenomenon is in good agreement with expectations based on electronic transport measurements. Employing this effect, we succeeded to reveal ultrafast dynamics of the anomalous Hall effect which accompanies the sub-100 picosecond optically induced magnetization reversal in a GdFeCo alloy. The experiments demonstrate the ability to control currents at terahertz frequencies in spintronic devices magnetically and ultra…
The idea to utilize not only the charge but also the spin of electrons in the operation of electronic devices has led to the development of spintronics, causing a revolution in how information is stored and processed. A novel advancement would be to develop ultrafast spintronics using femtosecond laser pulses. Employing terahertz (10$^{12}$ Hz) emission spectroscopy, we demonstrate optical generation of spin-polarized electric currents at the interfaces of metallic ferromagnetic heterostructures at the femtosecond timescale. The direction of the photocurrent is controlled by the helicity of th…
Laser-induced terahertz spin transport (TST) and ultrafast demagnetization (UDM) are central but so far disconnected phenomena in femtomagnetism and terahertz spintronics. Here, we use broadband terahertz emission spectroscopy to reliably measure both processes in one setup. We find that the rate of UDM of a single ferromagnetic metal film F has the same time evolution as the flux of TST from F into an adjacent normal-metal layer N. This remarkable agreement shows that UDM and TST are driven by the same force, which is fully determined by the state of the ferromagnet. An analytical model consi…
Anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) is a ubiquitous and versatile probe of magnetic order in contemporary spintronics research. Its origins are usually ascribed to extrinsic effects (i.e. spin-dependent electron scattering), whereas intrinsic (i.e. scattering-independent) contributions are neglected. Here, we measure AMR of polycrystalline thin films of the standard ferromagnets Co, Ni, Ni81Fe19 and Ni50Fe50 over the frequency range from DC to 28 THz. The large bandwidth covers the regimes of both diffusive and ballistic intraband electron transport and, thus, allows us to separate extrinsic a…
Graphene is a two-dimensional crystal consisting of a monatomic layer of carbon atoms. Electrons and holes in graphene behave as quasi-relativistic particles with zero effective mass and large (as compared to semiconductors) Fermi velocity. These unique physical properties can be used for designing detectors, emitters and modulators of terahertz radiation. Here we discuss several ideas of using graphene based structures for emission of terahertz radiation.
We use fiber-coupled photoconductive emitters and detectors to perform terahertz (THz) spectroscopy of lightly-doped n-InSb directly in the cryogenic (1.5 K) bore of a high-field superconducting magnet. We measure transmission spectra from 0.1-1.1 THz as the sample is driven through a metal-insulator transition (MIT) by applied magnetic field. In the low-field metallic state, the data directly reveal the plasma edge and magneto-plasmon modes. With increasing field, a surprisingly broad band (0.3-0.8 THz) of low transmission appears at the onset of the MIT. This band subsequently collapses and …
Terahertz (THz) signals, mainly generated by photonic or electronic approaches, are being sought for various applications, whereas the development of magnetic source might be a necessary step to harness the magnetic nature of electromagnetic radiation. We show that the relativistic effect on the current-driven domain-wall motion induces THz spin-wave emission in ferrimagnets. The required current density increases dramatically in materials with strong exchange interaction and rapidly exceeds 1012 A m-2, leading to the device breakdown and thus the lack of experimental evidence. By translating …
The terahertz spectral regime, ranging from about 0.1 to 15 THz, is one of the least explored yet most technologically transformative spectral regions. One current challenge is to develop efficient and compact terahertz emitters/detectors with a broadband and gapless spectrum that can be tailored for various pump photon energies. Here we demonstrate efficient single-cycle broadband THz generation, ranging from about 0.1 to 4 THz, from a thin layer of split-ring resonators with few tens of nanometers thickness by pumping at the telecommunications wavelength of 1.5 micrometer (200 THz). The tera…
We propose a terahertz radiation source based on the excitation of plasma resonances in graphene structures by means of mixing two NIR laser signals with a THz difference frequency. The process is the photo-thermo-electric effect which has recently been demonstrated to be operative at THz frequencies in graphene. An antenna couples the THz radiation out of the sub-wavelength graphene element and into the far field. The emission is monochromatic with a bandwidth determined by that of the NIR laser sources. The output power of the device as a function of the emitter frequency is estimated at ten…
Deciphering the origin of spin current in spintronic terahertz emitters and its imprint on their electromagnetic radiation via time-dependent density functional theory
Terahertz emission spectroscopy of ultrathin multilayers of magnetic and heavy metals has recently attracted much interest. So far, predominantly standard ferromagnetic materials have been exploited. Here, by introducing a suitable figure of merit, we systematically compare the strength of terahertz emission from X/Pt bilayers with X b…
Spintronic structures are extensively investigated for their spin orbit torque properties, required for magnetic commutation functionalities. Current progress in these materials is dependent on the interface engineering for the optimization of spin transmission. Here, we advance the analysis of ultrafast spin-charge conversion phenomena at ferromagnetic-transition metal interfaces due to their inverse spin-Hall effect properties. In particular the intrinsic inverse spin Hall effect of Pt-based systems and extrinsic inverse spin-Hall effect of Au:W and Au:Ta in NiFe/Au:(W,Ta) bilayers are inves…
Plasmonic metamaterials and metasurfaces offer new opportunities in developing high performance terahertz emitters and detectors beyond the limitations of conventional nonlinear materials. However, simple meta-atoms for second-order nonlinear applications encounter fundamental trade-offs in the necessary symmetry breaking and local-field enhancement due to radiation damping that is inherent to the operating resonant mode and cannot be controlled separately. Here we present a novel concept that eliminates this restriction obstructing the improvement of terahertz generation efficiency in nonline…
Spin transport is crucial for future spintronic devices operating at bandwidths up to the terahertz (THz) range. In F|N thin-film stacks made of a ferro/ferrimagnetic layer F and a normal-metal layer N, spin transport is mediated by (1) spin-polarized conduction electrons and/or (2) torque between electron spins. To identify a cross-over from (1) to (2), we study laser-driven spin currents in F|Pt stacks where F consists of model materials with different degrees of electrical conductivity. For the magnetic insulators YIG, GIG and maghemite, identical dynamics is observed. It arises from the TH…
We develop an analytic model for an ideal polyyne ring which describes the induced THz gap in the molecular spectrum due to the Stark effect. This simple model can also be used to describe an odd-dimered cyclocarbon which has undergone a spontaneous symmetry-breaking event (due to the Jahn-Teller effect) as an effective dipole across an ideal ring. We show that both the size of the gap, and the strength of optical transitions across it, can be modulated by varying the external electric field strength. A THz emission scheme based on optical excitation is proposed, thus paving the way for a new …
