A nearly omni-directional THz absorber for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations is proposed. Through the excitation of magnetic polariton in a metal-dielectric layer, the incident light is perfectly absorbed in a thin thickness which is about 25 times smaller than the resonance wavelength. By simply stacking several such structural layers with different geometrical dimensions, the bandwidth of this strong absorption can be effectively enhanced due to the hybridization of magnetic polaritons in different layers.
Frequency Band of 0.5 THz to 1.1 THz (WR1.5 and WR1) is one of the promising bands when it comes to 6G. In this paper, we propose a novel metamaterial absorber suitable to be used at lower WR1 frequencies in TE mode. Alternatively, the design can be used as a strong absorber at lower Terahertz frequencies. In addition, when used in TM mode the absorber works as a perfect absorber at higher WR1 band.
In this paper, we have proposed ultra-broadband terahertz absorber with three layers of periodic graphene disks arrays (PGDAs). A gold layer was utilized as backside reflector and TOPAS as dielectric spacers. Circuit model of PGDAs and the developed Transmission Line Model (TLM) for the absorber is utilized to design the structure using impedance matching concept. The validity of the results of the device was confirmed by Finite Element Method (FEM). The structure absorbs both TE and TM polarizations. Furthermore, the obtained normalized absorption bandwidth is 148% with a bandwidth of 2.64 TH…
High absorption in a wide frequency band has attracted considerable interest since their potential applications in frequency spectrum imaging systems and anti-radar cloaking. In this paper, a polarization-independent, ultra-broadband and omnidirectional terahertz absorber is proposed, fabricated and evaluated. It is experimentally demonstrated that an over 95% absorption can be obtained in the frequency range of 0.75~2.41 THz. Attributing to the multi-frequency destructive interference between the layers and the impedance-matching condition of the grating, five successive absorption peaks at 0…
In this paper the design for an absorbing metamaterial with near unity absorbance in terahertz region is presented. The absorber's unit cell structure consists of two metamaterial resonators that couple to electric and magnetic fields separately. The structure allows us to maximize absorption by varying dielectric material and thickness and, hence the effective electrical permittivity and magnetic permeability.
Intersubband (ISB) transitions in semiconductor multi-quantum well (MQW) structures are promising candidates for the development of saturable absorbers at terahertz (THz) frequencies. Here, we exploit amplitude and phase-resolved two-dimensional (2D) THz spectroscopy on the sub-cycle time scale to observe directly the saturation dynamics and coherent control of ISB transitions in a metal-insulator MQW structure. Clear signatures of incoherent pump-probe and coherent four-wave mixing signals are recorded as a function of the peak electric field of the single-cycle THz pulses. All nonlinear sign…
We present a superconducting metamaterial saturable absorber at terahertz frequencies. The absorber consists of an array of split ring resonators (SRRs) etched from a 100nm YBaCu3O7 (YBCO) film. A polyimide spacer layer and gold ground plane are deposited above the SRRs, creating a reflecting perfect absorber. Increasing either the temperature or incident electric field (E) decreases the superconducting condensate density and corresponding kinetic inductance of the SRRs. This alters the impedance matching in the metamaterial, reducing the peak absorption. At low electric fields, the absorption…
We report on a waveguide engineering technique that enables the generation of a bandwidth up to 1 THz and record ultra-short pulse length of 2.5 ps in injection seeded terahertz quantum cascade lasers. The reported technique is able to control and fully suppress higher order lateral modes in broadband terahertz quantum cascade lasers by introducing side-absorbers to metal-metal waveguides. The side-absorbers consist of a top metalization set-back with respect to the laser ridge and an additional lossy metal layer. In continuous wave operation the side-absorbers lead to octave spanning laser em…
We present the design, numerical simulations and experimental measurements of THz metamaterial absorbers with a broad and flat absorption top both for transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations over a wide incidence angle range. The metamaterial absorber unit cell consists of two sets of structures resonating at different but close frequencies. The overall absorption spectrum is the superposition of individual components and becomes flat at the top over a significant bandwidth. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.
We present quasi-analytical solutions (QANS) of hybrid platform (HP) comprising metallic grating (MG) and stacked-dielectric layers for terahertz (THz) radiation. The QANS are validated by finite difference time domain simulation. It is found that the Wood anomalies induce the high-order spoof surface plasmon resonances in the HP. The QANS are applied to optimize new perfect absorber for THz sensing of large-area thin film with ultrahigh figure of merit reaching fifth order of magnitude for the film thickness 0.0001p (p: MG period). The first-order Wood's anomaly of the insulator layer and the…
Metamaterial perfect absorbers from microwaves to optical part of the electromagnetic spectrum has been intensely studied for its ability to absorb electromagnetic radiation. Perfect absorption of light by metamaterials have opened up new opportunities for application oriented functionalities such as efficient sensors and emitters. We present an absorber based sensing scheme at the terahertz frequencies and discuss optimized designs to achieve high frequency and amplitude sensitivities. The major advantage of a perfect metamaterial absorber as a sensor is the sensitive shift in the absorber re…
Coherent perfect absorption (CPA) refers to interferometrically induced complete absorption of incident light by a partial absorber independently of its intrinsic absorption (which may be vanishingly small) or its thickness. CPA is typically realized in a resonant device, and thus cannot be achieved over a broad continuous spectrum, which thwarts its applicability to photodetectors and solar cells, for example. Here, we demonstrate broadband omni-resonant CPA by placing a thin weak absorber in a planar cavity and pre-conditioning the incident optical field by introducing judicious angular disp…
It is believed that passive mode locking is virtually impossible in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) because of too fast carrier relaxation time. Here, we revisit this possibility and theoretically show that stable mode locking and pulse durations in the few cycle regime at terahertz (THz) frequencies are possible in suitably engineered bound-to-continuum QCLs. We achieve this by utilizing a multi-section cavity geometry with alternating gain and absorber sections. The critical ingredients are the very strong coupling of the absorber to both field and environment as well as a fast absorber carrie…
The development of responsive metamaterials has enabled the realization of compact tunable photonic devices capable of manipulating the amplitude, polarization, wave vector, and frequency of light. Integration of semiconductors into the active regions of metallic resonators is a proven approach for creating nonlinear metamaterials through optoelectronic control of the semiconductor carrier density. Metal-free subwavelength resonant semiconductor structures offer an alternative approach to create dynamic metamaterials. We present InAs plasmonic disk arrays as a viable resonant metamaterial at t…
Terahertz (THz) metamaterials have been developed for THz sensing, detection, imaging, and many other functions due to their unusual absorbers. However, the unusual absorption spectra change with different incident angles. Thus, we designed and fabricated a focal plane array with metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure metamaterial absorbers for further research. The absorption spectrum with incident angles from 20 to 60 was measured using THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), and the experimental results reveal that the absorption spectrum changes with incident angle variations. A basic analy…
We designed and demonstrated a multi-spectral programmable perfect absorber that exploits two different phase-change materials. This programmability is possible by resonantly coupling two phase change materials, a Ge2Sb2Te5 layer to vanadium dioxide nanoparticles (VO2 NPs). The perfect absorption is attributed to the coalescence of gap plasmon modes excited between the NPs and waveguide cavity-like modes excited between the film and the NPs. The absorptance peak (>90%) can be tuned to four different infrared (IR) wavelengths from 1906 to 2960 nm by heating the structure to different temperatur…
We demonstrate thin, flexible, metamaterial films with a strong, narrowband, polarization- and angle-insensitive absorption designed for wavelengths near one millimeter. These structures, fabricated by photolithography on a commercially available, copper-backed polyimide substrate, are nearly indistinguishable to the unaided human eye but can be easily observed by imaging at the resonance frequency of the film. We demonstrate that these patterns can be used to mark or barcode objects for secure identification with a terahertz imaging system.
The invisibility cloak has been a long-standing dream for many researchers over the decades. The introduction of transformational optics has revitalized this field by providing a general method to design material distributions to hide the subject from detection. By transforming space and light propagation, a three-dimensional (3D) object is perceived as having a reduced number of dimensions, in the form of points, lines, and thin sheets, making it "undetectable" judging from the scattered field. Although a variety of cloaking devices have been reported at microwave and optical frequencies, the…
We demonstrate a broadband, polarization independent, omnidirectional absorber based on a metallic metasurface architecture, which accomplishes greater than 90% absorptance in the visible and near-infrared range of the solar spectrum, and exhibits low emissivity at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths. The complex unit cell of the metasurface solar absorber consists of eight pairs of gold nano-resonators that are separated from a gold ground plane by a thin silicon dioxide spacer. Our experimental measurements reveal high-performance absorption over a wide range of incidence angles for both s- an…
We demonstrated an ultra-broadband, polarization-insensitive and wide-angle metamaterial absorber for terahertz (THz) frequencies using arrays of truncated pyramid unit structure made of metal-dielectric multilayer composite. In our design each sub-layer behaving as an effective waveguide is gradually modified in their lateral width to realize a wideband response by effectively stitching together the resonance bands of different waveguide modes. Experimentally, our five layer sample with a total thickness 21um is capable of producing a large absorptivity above 80% from 0.7 to 2.3 THz up to the…
Absorption of terahertz waves by a metasurface comprising a biperiodic array of pixellated meta-atoms on top of a dielectric substrate backed by a perfect electric conductor was simulated using a commercial software, with either all or a few of the pixels in every meta-atom patched with graphene. Absorptances as high as 0.99 over a 1.16-THz-wide spectral regime for normal incidence were found for a metasurface comprising meta-atoms with only a few pixels patched with graphene, regardless of the polarization state. In comparison to metasurface absorbers comprising two graphene layers separated …
It is commonly believed that weak light-matter interactions in low-mobility graphene dramatically limits tunability of graphene-based optoelectronic devices, such as tunable absorbers or switches. In this paper, we develop and use a simple circuit model to understand absorption in graphene sheets. In particular, we show that light interacts weakly also with very high-mobility graphene sheets and propose systematic design means to overcome these problems. The results have allowed us to demonstrate in the terahertz band that perfect absorption with excellent electrical tunability can be achieved…
We discuss the possibility of realizing utlrabroadband omnidirectional absorbers and angularly selective coherent thermal emitters based on properly patterned plasmonic metastructures. Instead of relying on resonant concentration effects that inherently limit the bandwidth, we base our design on the combination of two inherently nonresonant effects: plasmonic Brewster funneling and adiabatic plasmonic focusing. With this approach, we demonstrate compact, broadband absorption and emission spanning terahertz, infrared and optical frequencies, ideal for various energy and defense applications.
We present optically tunable magnetic 3D metamaterials at terahertz (THz) frequencies which exhibit a tuning range of ~30% of the resonance frequency. This is accomplished by fabricating 3D array structures consisting of double-split-ring resonators (DSRRs) on silicon-on-sapphire, fabricated using multilayer electroplating. Photoexcitation of free carriers in the silicon within the capacitive region of the DSRR results in a red-shift of the resonant frequency from 1.74 THz to 1.16 THz. The observed frequency shift leads to a transition from a magnetic-to-bianisotropic response as verified thro…
This article presents the design of two dual-band graphene-based absorbers for terahertz frequencies. The absorbers are composed of two-dimensional (2D)arrays of ribbons and disks printed on a ground plane backed dielectric spacer. The design is based on the excitation of a specific plasmon polariton of the graphene patterned array at each resonance band. An analytical circuit model is used to derive closed-form relations for the geometrical parameters of the absorber and graphene parameters. The graphene patterned array appears as a surface admittance made of an infinite parallel array of ser…
We present an asymmetric bifacial graphene metasurface to realize tunable and broadband coherent perfect absorption (CPA) at terahertz (THz) frequencies. The proposed design is composed of two dissimilar graphene square patch metasurfaces stacked over an ultrathin dielectric substrate. Nonlinear CPA performance without resorting to optical nonlinearities and amplification are demonstrated based on wave interference phenomena taking place along and inside this subwavelength structure. Broadband asymmetric reflection from opposite directions is obtained in the case of single wave illumination. T…
Pyramidal metamaterials are currently developed for ultra-broadband absorbers. They consist of periodic arrays of alternating metal/dielectric layers forming truncated square-based pyramids. The metallic layers of increasing lengths play the role of vertically and, to a less extent, laterally coupled plasmonic resonators. Based on detailed numerical simulations, we demonstrate that plasmon hybridization between such resonators helps in achieving ultra-broadband absorption. The dipolar modes of individual resonators are shown to be prominent in the electromagnetic coupling mechanism. Lateral co…
Antireflection or impedance matching is a topic that has been extensively researched by the optical and microwave communities over the past century and until today. However, due to the diverging wave impedances of TE (s) and TM (p) polarizations with increasing incident angle, it is impossible to achieve perfect matching simultaneously for both polarizations at an oblique incident angle with a single conventional matching layer. In this paper, we show that simultaneous perfecting matching of an arbitrary substrate at an arbitrary incident angle from air is possible with a single uniaxial metam…
