We report that ZnO nanostructures synthesized by chemical route undergo a shape transition at ~ 20 nm from spherical to hexagonal morphology thereby changing the spectral components of the blue-green emission. Spherically shaped nanocrystals (size range 11 -18 nm) show emission in the range of 555-564 nm and the emission shifts to the longer wavelength as the size increases. On the other hand, rods and hexagonal platelets (size range 20-85 nm), which is the equilibrium morphology after the shape transition, show emission near 465-500 nm and it shifts to shorter wavelength as the size increases. The shape transition also leads to relaxation of microstrain in the system. Our analysis shows that the visible emission originates from a defect layer on the nanostructure surface which is affected by the shape transition. The change in the spectral component of the blue green emission on change of shape has been explained as arising from band bending due to depletion layer in smaller spherical particles which is absent in the larger particles with flat faces.
Reversible control of the photoluminescence of ZnO occurring in the visible range, has been achieved by application of a few volts (< 5V) to a device consisting of nanostructured ZnO film sandwiched between Indium Tin Oxide electrode and polyethylene oxide-lithium perchlorate, a solid polymer electrolyte. The photoluminescence intensity shows nearly 100% modulation with a response time less than 30 seconds, when the bias is applied at the electrolyte-electrode. A model is proposed for the observed effect that is based on defect states of ZnO and the band bending at the ZnO-electrolyte interfac…
Nanocomposite films of Zinc Oxide and Silicon were grown by thermal evaporation technique using varying ratios of ZnO:Si in the starting material. Analysis reveal the role of ZnO and amorphous silicon interface in contributing to relatively less common blue photoluminescence emissions (at $\sim$ 400 and 470nm). These blue peaks are observed along with the emissions resulting from band edge transition (370nm) and those related to defects (522nm) of ZnO. Careful analysis shows that along with the grain size of ZnO, a suitable compositional ratio (of ZnO to silicon) is critical for the coexistenc…
As grown ZnO:Si nanocomposite films fabricated by thermal evaporation showed broad photoluiminescence (PL) spectra due to merging of four prominent peaks viz 370, 410, 470 and 520 nm. Investigations revealed the role of interface in contributing to the two blue peaks at 410 and 470 nm. While the 470 nm is found to vary with ZnO grain size and their density, the 410 nm peak is attributed to the volume of shell surrounding ZnO nanoparticles. This study shows the contribution of ZnO cluster size and their density, as influenced by film thickness, in the PL spectra of the samples.
In this study, we report the enhancement in field emission (FE) properties of ZnO nanostructure by Ni doping at the base pressure of ~1 x 10-8 mbar, which were grown by the simple wet chemical process. ZnO nanostructure shows single crystalline wurtzite structure up to Ni 10% doping. FESEM represents change in the nanostructure morphology from thick nanoneedles to nanoflakes via thin nanorods with increase in Ni doped ZnO. The turn-on field required to draw a field emission (FE) current density at 1μA/cm2 is found to be 2.5, 2.3, 1.8 and 1.7 V/μm for ZnO(Ni0%), ZnO(Ni5%), ZnO(Ni7.5%) and ZnO(N…
We report on low temperature photoluminescence study of ZnO. The photoluminescence profile at 6K reveals FXA n=1, FXn=2A and FXn=1B peaks at 367.04 nm, 363.17 nm and 365.66 nm respectively together with neutral donor bound exciton D0 1XA at 370.48 nm. The first, second, and third order longitudinal optical phonon replica of free exciton transitions FXn=1A at 375.03, 383.10, and 391.54 nm respectively, and donor acceptor pair transition at 386.73 nm is observed. The dynamics of D0 1XA and 1LO with excitation intensity is presented. A red shift of photoluminescence peak position of D0 1XA and bl…
ZnO nanostructured films were prepared by chemical bath deposition method on glass substrates without any assistance of either microwave or high pressure autoclaves. The effect of solute concentration on the pure wurtzite ZnO nanostructure morphologies is studied. The controlling of the solute concentration help to control nano-structure in the form of nano-needles, and rods.
This paper deals with the investigations on the nucleation and growth of ZnO nanostructures in a catalyst free synthesis. The ZnO nanostructures have been formed by evaporation of Zn (99.99%) in O_2 and Ar atmosphere in single zone furnace under two temperature regions, region A (~1173-1073K) and region B (~873-773K). Through application of XRD and TEM techniques, it has been shown that first ZnO is formed which changes to ZnOx through creation of oxygen vacancies. The ZnOx acts as self-catalyst and leads to formation of various nanostructures. Those observed in the present investigation are n…
Flower-like nanostructures formed by ZnO nanorods were synthesized and deposited on seeded silicon and glass substrates by a hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) - assisted hydrothermal method at low temperature (90 oC) with methenamine ((CH3)6N4), as surfactant and catalyst. The substrates were seeded with ZnO nanoparticles. The structure and morphology of the nanostructures were studied by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. Influence of the seed nanoparticle on the formation of the flower-lik…
The magnetic transition-metal (TM) @ oxide nanoparticles have been of great interest due to their wide range of applications, from medical sensors in magnetic resonance imaging to photo-catalysis. Although several studies on small clusters of TM@oxide have been reported, the understanding of the physical electronic properties of TMn@(ZnO)42 is far from sufficient. In this work, the electronic, magnetic and optical properties of TMn@(ZnO)42 (TM = Fe, Co and Ni) hetero-nanostructure are investigated using the density functional theory (DFT). It has been found that the core-shell nanostructure Fe…
We have investigated the magnetic properties of non-doped ZnO nanostructures by using {\it ab initio} total energy calculations. Contrary to many proposals that ferromagnetism in non-doped semiconductors should be induced by intrinsic point defects, we show that ferromagnetism in nanostructured materials should be mediated by extended defects such as surfaces and grain boundaries. This kind of defects create delocalized, spin polarized states that should be able to warrant long-range magnetic interactions.
Mg0.29Zn0.71O/ZnO (MZO/ZnO) bilayers were grown on sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition at ~ 400 C and were subsequently annealed at different temperatures ranging from ~ 500 to 900 C to allow diffusion of Mg across the interface. The diffusion of Mg was confirmed from secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) and Photo-absorption measurements on the samples. As a result of Mg diffusion the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the bilayers got significantly modified. Whereas the as grown structure had two distinct near band edge UV luminescence peaks corresponding to the ZnO and MZO layer,…
The present article describes the size induced changes in the structural arrangement of intrinsic defects present in chemically synthesized ZnO nanoparticles of various sizes. Routine X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) have been performed to determine the shapes and sizes of the nanocrystalline ZnO samples. Detailed studies using positron annihilation spectroscopy reveals the presence of zinc vacancy. Whereas analysis of photoluminescence results predict the signature of charged oxygen vacancies. The size induced changes in positron parameters as well as the pho…
We report on low temperature photoluminescence (PL) and EPR study of bulk polycrystalline ZnO . Variation of peak position of donor bound exciton transition (D1XA) and FXAn=1-1LO with pump intensity show red shift and blue shift respectively due to exciton-exciton scattering. EPR spectra reveals three peaks at g value of 1.985, 1.956 and 1.939 respectively, g=1.956 and g=1.985 is due to shallow donors Zn interstitial and oxygen vacancy respectively An EPR spectrum at 100 K reveals higher degree of asymmetry and hyperfine splitting due to crystal field and inhomogeneous relaxation of paramagnet…
In this letter, we study how coupling between AuNPs and ZnO thin films affects their emission properties. The emission intensity of ZnO thin films changes when Al2O3 spacer layer of different thickness are included in ZnO/Au films, consistent with theoretical predictions. The emission properties are also controlled using the polarization of the excitation source. Emission properties depended on the polarization of the excitation source because of the surface plasmon resonance of AuNPs. The photoluminescence anisotropy of these systems shows that enhanced photoluminescence can be achieved throu…
Effect of ambient gases on photoluminescence (PL) and electrical conductivity of films prepared using ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) have been investigated. It is observed that NPs of size below 20 nm kept inside a chamber exhibit complete reduction in their visible PL when oxygen partial pressure of the surrounding gases is decreased by evacuation. However the visible PL from ZnO NPs is insensitive to other major gases present in the ambient air. The rate of change of PL intensity with pressure is inversely proportional to the ambient air pressure and increases when particle size decreases due to th…
We report on the photoluminescence (PL) properties of MgZnO/ZnO heterojunctions grown by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy. Influence of the applied magnetic field (B) on the radiative recombination of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is investigated up to 54 T. An increase in magnetic field in the range of B <= 20 T results in a redshift in the PL. Abrupt lineshape changes in the PL spectra are observed at higher magnetic fields, in correlation with the integer quantum Hall states. We attempt to interpret these features using the conventional model for the 2DEG-related PL based on…
Most of the applications of the nano structures dependent on the morphology which affects the opto electronics properties. This research article provides a pathway of guiding optical properties like band-gap and fluorescence properties by controlled growth of nano-rods, -flowers, -needles or- tubes without external chemical doping, by simple hydro thermal method by controlling over synthesis parameter, temperature.
Precise control of morphologies of one-dimensional (1D) or 2D nanostructures during growth has not been easily accessible, usually degrading the device performance and therefore limiting applications to various advanced nanoscale electronics and optoelectronics. Graphene could be a platform to serve as a substrate for both morphology control and direct use of electrodes due to its ideal monolayer flatness with π electrons. Here, we report that by using graphene directly as a substrate, vertically well-aligned ZnO nanowires and nanowalls were obtained systematically by controlling Au catalyst t…
Nanocomposite thin films of Zinc Oxide and Silicon were grown by co-evaporating powdered ZnO and Si. This resulted in nanocrystallites of ZnO being embedded in Silicon. The mismatch in crystal structures of constituent materials result in the ZnO nanocrystals to exist in a state of stress. This along with oxygen vacancies in the samples result in good Photoluminescence emission at 520nm. Also, Silicon background gave a photoluminescence emission at 620nm. The structure was found quite stable over time since the homgenously dispersed ZnO nanocrystals do not agglomerate. The nanocomposites promi…
We have studied the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic defects in the magnetic and electrical transport properties of Co-doped ZnO thin films. X ray absorption measurements show that Co substitute Zn in the ZnO structure and it is in the 2+ oxidation state. Magnetization (M) measurements show that doped samples are mainly paramagnetic. From M vs. H loops measured at 5 K we found that the values of the orbital L and spin S numbers are between 1 and 1.3 for L and S = 3/2, in agreement with the representative values for isolated Co 2+. The obtained negative values of the Curie-Weiss temperature…
We report synthesis of Cd substituted ZnO nanostructures (Zn1-xCdxO with x upto \approx .09) by high pressure solution growth method. The synthesized nanostructures comprise of nanocrystals that are both particles (~ 10-15 nm) and rods which grow along (002) direction as established by Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Rietveld analysis of the XRD data shows monotonous increase of the unit cell volume with the increase of Cd concentration. The optical absorption as well as the photoluminescence (PL) shows red shift on Cd substitution. The line width o…
The effect of thermal annealing on wurtzite ZnO, terminated by two surfaces, (0 0 0 $\bar 1$) (which is oxygen-terminated) and (0 0 0 1) (which is Zn-terminated), is investigated via molecular dynamics simulation using reactive force field (ReaxFF). As a result of annealing at a threshold temperature range of 700~K $ < T_{\mbox{\small t}} \leq 800$~K, surface oxygen atoms begin to sublimate from the (0 0 0 $\bar 1$) surface, while no atom leaves the (0 0 0 1) surface. The ratio of oxygen leaving the surface increases with temperature $T$ (for $T \geq T_{\mbox{\small t}}$). The relative lumines…
In this work, a reversible control over the visible luminescence of phosphor ZnO is achieved by the application of a few volts (<5V) to nanostructured ZnO film sandwiched between ITO and LiClO4/PEO solid electrolyte. Since ZnO is a good absorbing material but ITO-Glass substrate is transparent in the range of 320-375 nm, the ZnO-ITO interface has been illuminated by a 345 nm light passing through the ITO glass substrate and the emitted light near 545 nm has been collected in reflection mode. When the solid polymer electrolyte is negatively biased, up to 107 percent enhancement in the visible l…
Nanomaterials based on ZnO have been used to build glucose sensors due to its high isoelectric point, which is important when a protein like glucose oxidase (GOx) is attached to a surface. It also creates a biologically friendly environment to preserve the activity of the enzyme. In this work we study the electrical transport properties of ZnO thin films (TFs) and single crystals (SC) in contact with different solutions by using impedance spectroscopy. We have found that the composition of the liquid, by means of the charge of the ions, produces strong changes in the transport properties of th…
The structural, optical, morphological and nonlinear optical properties of Cu:ZnO spray-coated films are studied. The surface morphology of Cu:ZnO thin films turned out to be homogenous, crack free and well covered with pea-shaped grains. The peak shift observed in the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra of the Cu:ZnO thin films infers the defect states present in the films. The satellite peak observed at 939.9 eV for Cu2P core-level spectra confirms the +2 oxidation state of Cu in the films. The formation of additional defect levels in the nanostruc-tures upon Cu doping was investigated …
We report the growth of Al-catalysed ZnO nanowires (NWs) using a thermal evaporation technique. Before the growth, the substrates were covered with a distribution of Al nano-island that act as seeds. We found that the density of NWs increases as the density of seeds is increased, confirming the catalyst properties of Al. The critical parameters of growth are the substrate temperature, oxygen partial pressure and the thickness of the initial Al layer from which the seeds are formed. The results showed that the oxygen pressure has a strong influence on the structural characteristics: the nanowire…
We have grown nitrogen-doped ZnO films grown by two kinds of epitaxial methods on lattice-matched ScAlMgO$_4$ substrates. We measured the photoluminescence (PL) of the two kinds of ZnO:N layers in the donor-acceptor-pair transition region. The analysis of excitation-intensity dependence of the PL peak shift with a fluctuation model has proven that our observed growth-technique dependence was explained in terms of the inhomogeneity of charged impurity distribution. It was found that the inhomogeneity in the sample prepared with the process showing better electrical property was significantly sm…
We present results of magneto-optical measurements and theoretical analysis of shallow bound exciton complexes in bulk ZnO. Polarization and angular dependencies of magneto-photoluminescence spectra at 5 T suggest that the upper valence band has $Γ_7$ symmetry. Nitrogen doping leads to the formation of an acceptor center that compensates shallow donors. This is confirmed by the observation of excitons bound to ionized donors in nitrogen doped ZnO. The strongest transition in the ZnO:N ($I_9$ transition) is associated with a donor bound exciton. This conclusion is based on its thermalization be…
The origin of room temperature (RT) ferromagnetism (FM) in Ni doped ZnO samples are systematically investigated through physical, optical, and magnetic properties of nanostructure, prepared by simple low-temperature wet chemical method. Reitveld refinement of X-ray diffraction pattern displays an increase in lattice parameters with strain relaxation and contraction in Zn/O occupancy ratio by means of Ni-doping. Similarly scanning electron microscope demonstrates modification in the morphology from nanorods to nanoflakes with Ni doping, suggests incorporation of Ni ions in ZnO. More interesting…
We have characterized the growth of ZnO using sequential infiltration synthesis (SiS) on PS-b-PMMA block copolymers (BCP) of spherical and cylindrical sub-20nm morphologies and studied how the photoluminescence of these nanostructures varies per its seed layer. Investigation of these structures was done using atomic force microscopy (AFM), spectrofluorometry, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We report blue-shifted photoemission at 335 nm (3.70 eV), suggesting quantum confinement effects. This UV-photoluminescence can be translated into emitter sizes of roughly 1.5nm …
The electrochemical deposition of ZnO hierarchical nanostructures directly from PHEMA hydrogel coated electrodes has been successfully demonstrated. A variety of hierarchical ZnO nanostructures, including porous nanoflakes, nanosheets and nanopillar arrays were fabricated directly from the PHEMA hydrogel coated electrodes. Hybrid ZnO-hydrogel composite films were formed with low zinc concentration and short electrodeposition time. A dual-layer structure consisting of a ZnO/polymer and pure ZnO layer was obtained with zinc concentration above 0.01 M. SEM observations and XPS depth profiling wer…
Zinc oxide (ZnO) films having various thicknesses were synthesized on sapphire substrates by thermal oxidation of Zn-metallic films in air ambient. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra indicate that the resulting films possess a polycrystalline hexagonal wurtzite structure without preferred orientation. For films having a thickness of 200 nm, crystal grain size was observed to decrease with increasing annealing temperature up to 600C, and then increase at higher temperatures. Thicker films demonstrated a modest increase in grain size as temperature increased from 300C to 1200C. The influence of fil…
In this work, nonlinear optical properties of Na: ZnO thin films (Na: ZnO) have been experimentally elaborated. The principal possibility to operate the nonlinear optical features using external laser beams is shown. The Na: ZnO films were synthesized by spray pyrolysis technique at a deposition temperature equal to about 400 C. XRD graph reveals that the grown films were polycrystalline in nature with a dominant peak corresponding to (0 0 2) plane. Despite the difference in the ionic radii of the Na and Zn, an angle shift in the XRD peak was not observed, whereas there was a significant chang…
In this study, the effect of Sr- and Ni-doping on microstructural, morphological and sensing properties of ZnO nanorods has been investigated. Nanorods with different Sr and Ni loadings were prepared using a simple wet chemical method and characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence (PL) analysis. XRD data confirmed that Sr- and Ni-doped samples maintainsthe wurtzite hexagonal structure of pure ZnO. However, unlikes Sr, Ni doping modifies the nanorod morphology, increases the surface area (SA) and decreases the ratio of IUV/Igreen …
ZnO nanoparticles (NP) of size less than around 20 nm inside a chamber exhibits complete reduction in their visible photoluminescence (PL) intensity when partial pressure of oxygen in the surrounding gaseous environment is decreased by evacuation. However the visible PL from ZnO nanoparticles are insensitive to the gases like N2, He and Ar. The rate of change of PL intensity with pressure (or the sensitivity) is inversely proportional to the ambient air pressure. Sensitivity increases when surface to volume ratio increases for lower particle size. The charged oxygen vacancies are attributed as…
The results of XPS core-level and valence band measurements, photoluminescence spectra of a-SiO2 implanted by Zn-ions (E=30 keV, D=1*1017 cm^-2) and Density Functional Theory calculations of electronic structure as well as formation energies of structural defects in silica glass induced by Zn-ion implantation are presented. Both theory and experiment show that it is energetically more favorable for implanted zinc ions to occupy the interstitial positions instead of cation substitution. As a result, the Zn-ions embedded to interstitials, form chemical bonds with the surrounding oxygen atoms, fo…
As grown ZnO:Si nanocomposites of different compositional ratios were fabricated by thermal evaporation techniques. These films were subjected to post deposition annealing under high vacuum at a temperature of $\rm 250C^o$ for 90min. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of annealed samples have shown marked improvements both in terms of intensity and broadening. For the first time in ZnO:Si nanocomposite films we see huge UV, red and orange peaks at 310, 570 and 640nm. Structural and Raman analysis show formation of a Zn-Si-O shell around ZnO nano clusters wherein on heating $\rm Zn_2SiO_4$ comp…
We report a photoluminescence observation of robust excitonic polarons due to strong coupling of exciton and longitudinal optical (LO) phonon as well as Fano-type interference in high quality ZnO crystal. At low enough temperatures, the strong coupling of excitons and LO phonons leads to not only traditional Stokes lines (SLs) but also up to second-order anti-Stokes lines (ASLs) besides the zero-phonon line (ZPL). The SLs and ASLs are found to be not mirror symmetric with respect to the ZPL, strongly suggesting that they are from different coupling states of exciton and phonons. It is more int…
Present paper reports the effect of ZnO additives on humidity and temperature sensing properties of cuprous oxide. The cuprous oxide powder was mixed with 10% and 25% ZnO by weight and these samples were pelletized by using hydraulic pressing machine. The sensing materials were also investigated by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). SEM images show morphology and porosity of material. The average particles size of cuprous oxide was found to be 1.2 micron. The sheet like structures of ZnO is evident in micrographs. From XRD all peaks are well identified and crystall…
We report a novel effect that the visible photoluminescence (in the blue-green band) from ZnO anoparticles can be controlled by changing the ionic or polar nature of the medium in which the nanoparticles are dispersed. We find that the presence of sufficient amount of electrolytes can even quench the emission. We propose an explanation based on surface charge of the ZnO nanoparticles which control the band bending in the depletion layer at the surface of the anoparticles. The band bending in turn, decides the predominant nature of the visible emission. The explanation is validated by establish…
An emerging branch of electronics, the optospintronics, would be highly boosted if the control of magnetic order by light is implemented in magnetic semiconductors nanostructures being compatible with the actual technology. Here we show that the ferromagnetic magnetization of low Fe-doped ZnO nanowires prepared by carbothermal process is enhanced under illumination up to temperatures slightly below room temperature. This enhancement is related to the existence of an oxygen vacancy V$_{\rm O}$ in the neighbouring of an antiferromagnetic superexchange Fe$^{3+}$-Fe$^{3+}$ pair. Under illumination…
The uniaxial stress dependence of the band structure and the exciton-polariton transitions in wurtzite ZnO is thoroughly studied using modern first-principles calculations based on the HSE+G0W0 approach, k p modeling using the deformation potential framework, and polarized photoluminescence measurements. The ordering of the valence bands [A(G7), B(G9), C(G7)] is found to be robust even for high uniaxial and biaxial strains. Theoretical results for the uniaxial pressure coefficients and splitting rates of the A, B, and C valence bands and their optical transitions are obtained including the eff…
Electric field enhanced electron spin coherence is characterized using time-resolved Faraday rotation spectroscopy in n-type ZnO epilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy. An in-plane dc electric field E almost doubles the transverse spin lifetime at 20 K, without affecting the effective g-factor. This effect persists till high temperatures, but decreases with increasing carrier concentration. Comparisons of the variations in the spin lifetime, the carrier recombination lifetime and photoluminescence lifetimes indicate that the applied E enhances the radiative recombination rate. All observed …
A simple fabrication method of Ag nanoislands on ZnO films is presented. Continuous wave and time-resolved photoluminescence and transmission are employed to investigate modifications of visible and UV emissions of ZnO brought about by coupling to localized surface plasmons residing on Ag nanoislands. The size of the nanoislands, determining their absorption and scattering efficiencies, is found to be an important factor governing plasmonic modification of optical response of ZnO films. The presence of the Ag nanoislands of appropriate dimensions causes a strong (threefold) increase in emissio…
A near-band-edge bluish electroluminescence (EL) band centered at around 440 nm was observed from ZnO p-i-n homojunction diodes through a semi-transparent electrode deposited on the p-type ZnO top layer. The EL peak energy coincided with the photoluminescence peak energy of an equivalent p-type ZnO layer, indicating that the electron injection from the n-type layer to the p-type layer dominates the current, giving rise to the radiative recombination in the p-type layer. The imbalance in charge injection is considered to originate from the lower majority carrier concentration in the p-type laye…
Silver-doped ZnO nanoparticles were successfully fabricated at $400\,^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ via a simple and rapid method based on short time solid state milling and calcination of precursor powders. The effect of Ag dilute doping on the structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties of ZnO nanoparticles was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis spectrophotometer and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy.~X-ray analysis revealed that Ag doped ZnO solidified in hexagonal wurtzite structure.~ The intensity of deep level emission was reduced with increasing silver doping in PL measuremen…
Thin films of laser molecular-beam epitaxy grown \textit{n}-type Ga-doped ZnO were investigated with respect to their optical properties. Intense room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) in the near-band edge (NBE) region was observed. Moreover, its broadening of PL band was significantly larger than predicted by theoretical results modeled in terms of potential fluctuations caused by the random distribution of donor impurities. In addition, the lineshape was rather asymmetrical. To explain these features of the NBE bands, a vibronic model was developed accounting for contributions from a serie…
The synthesis, morphology and magneto-transport properties of nanostructure-engineered charge-ordered Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 grown on ZnO nanowires are reported. The stability of the charge-ordering can be tuned, but more interestingly the sign of the magnetoresistance is inverted at low temperatures. Coexistence of ferromagnetic clusters on the surface and antiferromagnetic phase in the core of the grains were considered in order to understand these features. This work suggests that such a process of growing on nanowires network can be readily extended to other transition metal oxides and open doors …
We studied the circular polarization and angular dependences of the magneto-photoluminescence spectra of the free A-exciton 1S state in wurtzite ZnO at T = 5 K. The circular polarization properties of the spectra clearly indicate that the top valence band has Gamma_7 symmetry. The out-of-plane component of the magnetic field, which is parallel to the sample's c axis, leads to linear Zeeman splitting of both the dipole-allowed Gamma_5 exciton state and the weakly allowed Gamma_1/Gamma_2 exciton states. The in-plane field, which is perpendicular to the c axis, increases the oscillator strength o…
Pulsed ArF laser annealing in air and in hydrogen atmosphere improves the optical properties of ZnO nanostructured films. Independently on the ambient atmosphere, laser annealing produces two major effects on the photoluminescence (PL) spectra: first, the efficiency of the exciton PL increases due to decrease of the number of non-radiative recombination centers; second, the intensity of the defect-related orange band decreases because of the removing of excessive oxygen trapped into the films during deposition. However, annealing in the ambient air also increases the intensity of the green ban…
We present the results of experiments on synthesis of ZnO nanoclusters by reactive pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The nanoclusters were formed and crystallized in the gas phase and deposited on SiO2 substrates. The nanostructured films were characterized by conventional photoluminescence (PL). The PL spectra consist of a narrow UV excitonic band and a broad visible band related to defects in the film. The film preparation conditions such as the substrate temperature, ambient gas nature and pressure, were optimized in order to increase the intensity of excitonic emission and prevent the formati…
We report persistently increased conduction in ZnO nanowires irradiated by ion beam with various ion energies and species. This effect is shown to be related to the already known persistent photo conduction in ZnO and dubbed persistent ion beam induced conduction. Both effects show similar excitation efficiency, decay rates, and chemical sensitivity. Persistent ion beam induced conduction will potentially allow countable (i.e., single dopant) implantation in ZnO nanostructures and other materials showing persistent photo conduction.
We investigated the optical properties of epitaxial \textit{n}-type ZnO films grown on lattice-matched ScAlMgO$_4$ substrates. As the Ga doping concentration increased up to $6 \times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$, the absorption edge showed a systematic blueshift, consistent with the Burstein-Moss effect. A bright near-bandedge photoluminescence (PL) could be observed even at room temperature, the intensity of which increased monotonically as the doping concentration was increased except for the highest doping level. It indicates that nonradiative transitions dominate at a low doping density. Both a Sto…
Ultrafast time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy following one- and two-photon excitation of ZnO powder is used to gain unprecedented insight into the surprisingly high external quantum efficiency of its "green" defect emission band. The role of exciton diffusion, the effects of reabsorption, and the spatial distributions of radiative and nonradiative traps are comparatively elucidated for the ultraviolet excitonic and "green" defect emission bands in both unannealed, nanometer-sized ZnO powders and annealed, micrometer-sized ZnO:Zn powders. We find that the primary mechanism limiting qu…
We report on room temperature phonon-assisted whispering gallery mode (WGM) lasing in ZnO microwires. For WGM laser action on the basis of the low gain phonon scattering process high quality resonators with sharp corners and smooth facets are prerequisite. Above the excitation threshold power $P_{\textit{Th}}$ of typically $100\,kW/cm^2$, the recombination of free excitons under emission of two longitudinal optical phonons provides sufficient gain to overcome all losses in the microresonator and to result in laser oscillation. This threshold behavior is accompanied by a distinct change of the …
The non-equilibrium boron nitride (BN) phase of zinc oxide (ZnO) has been reported for thin films and nanostructures, however, its properties are not well understood due to a persistent controversy that prevents reconciling experimental and first-principles results for its atomic coordinates. We use first-principles theoretical spectroscopy to accurately compute electronic and optical properties, including single-quasiparticle and excitonic effects: Band structures and densities of states are computed using density functional theory, hybrid functionals, and the $GW$ approximation. Accurate opt…
Recently the developments in the field of II-VI-oxides have been spectacular. Various epitaxial methods has been used to grow epitaxial ZnO layers. Not only epilayers but also sufficiently good-quality multiple quantum wells (MQWs) have also been grown by laser molecular-beam epitaxy (laser-MBE). We discuss mainly the experimental aspect of the optical properties of excitons in ZnO-based MQW heterostructures. Systematic temperature-dependent studies of optical absorption and photoluminescence in these MQWs were used to evaluate the well-width dependence and the composition dependence of the ma…
