It is shown that any communication system which admits a sum-product (SP) receiver also admits a corresponding linear-programming (LP) receiver. The two receivers have a relationship defined by the local structure of the underlying graphical model, and are inhibited by the same phenomenon, which we call 'pseudoconfigurations'. This concept is a generalization of the concept of 'pseudocodewords' for linear codes. It is proved that the LP receiver has the 'optimum certificate' property, and that the receiver output is the lowest cost pseudoconfiguration. Equivalence of graph-cover pseudoconfigurations and linear-programming pseudoconfigurations is also proved. While the LP receiver is generally more complex than the corresponding SP receiver, the LP receiver and its associated pseudoconfiguration structure provide an analytic tool for the analysis of SP receivers. As an example application, we show how the LP design technique may be applied to the problem of joint equalization and decoding.
Wireless receiver design is critical to the overall system performance. In this work, we apply the techniques of mixed-integer programming to formulate a unified receiver in relay networks with only partial channel information. We also relax all the constraints into real field to save computations, but at the cost of bit error performance. Moreover, a receiver formulation with adaptive number of constraints is proposed using the cutting plane techniques. Last but not least, number of flops is investigated for different formulations.

The characterization of the global maximum of energy efficiency (EE) problems in wireless networks is a challenging problem due to the non-convex nature of investigated problems in interference channels. The aim of this work is to develop a new and general framework to achieve globally optimal solutions. First, the hidden monotonic structure of the most common EE maximization problems is exploited jointly with fractional programming theory to obtain globally optimal solutions with exponential complexity in the number of network links. To overcome this issue, we also propose a framework to comp…
In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading channels, the design criterion for full-diversity space-time block codes (STBCs) is primarily determined by the decoding method at the receiver. Although constructions of STBCs have predominantly matched the maximum-likelihood (ML) decoder, design criteria and constructions of full-diversity STBCs have also been reported for low-complexity linear receivers. A new receiver architecture called Integer-Forcing (IF) linear receiver has been proposed to MIMO channels by Zhan et al. which showed promising results for the high-rate V-BLAST encoding sche…
This paper studies receiver design in single-input multiple-output (SIMO) slow fading channels with imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the receiver only. Using generalized mutual information (GMI) as achievable rate, we study the outage behavior when the receiver employs certain generalized form of the nearest neighbor decoding rule. Our study reveals that linearly shrinking the linear minimum meansquared error (LMMSE) estimate of the CSI reduces the outage probability when the number of receive antennas is finite. Only in the asymptotic regime where the number of receive antennas gr…
Integer-forcing (IF) linear receiver has been recently introduced for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading channels. The receiver has to compute an integer linear combination of the symbols as a part of the decoding process. In particular, the integer coefficients have to be chosen based on the channel realizations, and the choice of such coefficients is known to determine the receiver performance. The original known solution of finding these integers was based on exhaustive search. A practical algorithm based on Hermite-Korkine-Zolotareff (HKZ) and Minkowski lattice reduction algorith…
Linear receivers are an attractive low-complexity alternative to optimal processing for multi-antenna MIMO communications. In this paper we characterize the information-theoretic performance of MIMO linear receivers in two different asymptotic regimes. For fixed number of antennas, we investigate the limit of error probability in the high-SNR regime in terms of the Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff (DMT). Following this, we characterize the error probability for fixed SNR in the regime of large (but finite) number of antennas. As far as the DMT is concerned, we report a negative result: we show …
Linear receivers are often used to reduce the implementation complexity of multiple-antenna systems. In a traditional linear receiver architecture, the receive antennas are used to separate out the codewords sent by each transmit antenna, which can then be decoded individually. Although easy to implement, this approach can be highly suboptimal when the channel matrix is near singular. This paper develops a new linear receiver architecture that uses the receive antennas to create an effective channel matrix with integer-valued entries. Rather than attempting to recover transmitted codewords dir…
In the index coding problem, introduced by Birk and Kol (INFOCOM, 1998), the goal is to broadcast an n bit word to n receivers (one bit per receiver), where the receivers have side information represented by a graph G. The objective is to minimize the length of a codeword sent to all receivers which allows each receiver to learn its bit. For linear index coding, the minimum possible length is known to be equal to a graph parameter called minrank (Bar-Yossef et al., FOCS, 2006). We show a polynomial time algorithm that, given an n vertex graph G with minrank k, finds a linear index code for G o…
A new architecture called integer-forcing (IF) linear receiver has been recently proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading channels, wherein an appropriate integer linear combination of the received symbols has to be computed as a part of the decoding process. In this paper, we propose a method based on Hermite-Korkine-Zolotareff (HKZ) and Minkowski lattice basis reduction algorithms to obtain the integer coefficients for the IF receiver. We show that the proposed method provides a lower bound on the ergodic rate, and achieves the full receive diversity. Suitability of complex …
This paper describes the limiting behavior of linear and decision feedback equalizers (DFEs) in single/multiple antenna systems employing real/complex-valued modulation alphabets. The wideband frequency selective channel is modeled using a Rayleigh fading channel model with infinite number of time domain channel taps. Using this model, we show that the considered equalizers offer a fixed post signal-to-noise-ratio (post-SNR) at the equalizer output that is close to the matched filter bound (MFB). General expressions for the post-SNR are obtained for zero-forcing (ZF) based conventional receive…
We analyze scheduling algorithms for multiuser communication systems with users having multiple antennas and linear receivers. When there is no feedback of channel information, we consider a common round robin scheduling algorithm, and derive new exact and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) maximum sum-rate results for the maximum ratio combining (MRC) and minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receivers. We also present new analysis of MRC, zero forcing (ZF) and MMSE receivers in the low SNR regime. When there are limited feedback capabilities in the system, we consider a common practical scheduling…

We study zero-error unicast index-coding instances, where each receiver must perfectly decode its requested message set, and the message sets requested by any two receivers do not overlap. We show that for all these instances with up to five receivers, linear index codes are optimal. Although this class contains 9847 non-isomorphic instances, by using our recent results and by properly categorizing the instances based on their graphical representations, we need to consider only 13 non-trivial instances to solve the entire class. This work complements the result by Arbabjolfaei et al. (ISIT 201…
In this paper, we derive a performance comparison between two training-based schemes for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems. The two schemes are thetime-division multiplexing scheme and the recently proposed data-dependent superimposed pilot scheme. For both schemes, a closed-form expressions for the Bit Error Rate (BER) is provided. We also determine, for both schemes, the optimal allocation of power between pilot and data that minimizes the BER.
We consider the uplink of non-cooperative multi-cellular systems deploying multiple antenna elements at the base stations (BS), covering both the cases of conventional and very large number of antennas. Given the inevitable pilot contamination and an arbitrary path-loss for each link, we address the impact of time variation of the channel due to the relative movement between users and BS antennas, which limits system's performance even if the number antennas is increased, as shown. In particular, we propose an optimal linear receiver (OLR) maximizing the received signal-to-interference-plus-no…
In this work we analyze the problem of linear correction of the reliability metrics (L-values) in BICM receivers. We want to find the correction factors that minimize the probability of error of a maximum likelihood decoder that uses the corrected L-values. To this end, we use the efficient approximation of the pairwise error probability in the domain of the cumulant generating functions (CGF) of the L-values and conclude that the optimal correction factors are equal to the twice of the saddlepoint of the CGF. We provide a simple numerical example of transmission in the presence of interferenc…
In this paper, we extend the diversity and multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) analysis from point-to-point channels to cellular systems to evaluate the impact of inter-cell interference on the system reliability and efficiency. Fundamental tradeoff among diversity order, multiplexing gain and inter-cell interference intensity is characterized to reveal the capability of multiple antennas in cellular systems. And the detrimental effects of the inter-cell interference on the system performance of diversity and multiplexing is presented and analyzed.
A technique is presented to evaluate the performance of a wireless link with a multi-antenna linear Minimum-Mean-Square Error (MMSE) receiver in the presence of interferers distributed according to non-homogeneous Poisson processes or Poisson cluster processes on the plane. The Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) of the Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) of a representative link is derived for both types of networks assuming independent Rayleigh fading between antennas. Several representative spatial node distributions are considered, for which the derived CDFs are verified by n…
Much stringent reliability and processing latency requirements in ultra-reliable-low-latency-communication (URLLC) traffic make the design of linear massive multiple-input-multiple-output (M-MIMO) receivers becomes very challenging. Recently, Bayesian concept has been used to increase the detection reliability in minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) linear receivers. However, the latency processing time is a major concern due to the exponential complexity of matrix inversion operations in MMSE schemes. This paper proposes an iterative M-MIMO receiver that is developed by using a Bayesian concept a…
A technique is presented to characterize the Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) of a representative link with a multiantenna linear Minimum-Mean-Square-Error receiver in a wireless network with transmitting nodes distributed according to a doubly stochastic process, which is a generalization of the Poisson point process. The cumulative distribution function of the SINR of the representative link is derived assuming independent Rayleigh fading between antennas. Several representative spatial node distributions are considered, including networks with both deterministic and random clu…
In-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance is one of the most important hardware impairments in communication systems. It arises in the analogue parts of direct conversion radio frequency (RF) transceivers and can cause severe performance losses. In this paper, I/Q imbalance (IQI) aware widely-linear (WL) channel estimation and data detection schemes for uplink multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are proposed. The resulting receiver is a WL extension of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) receiver and jointly mitigates multi-user interference and IQI by processing …
In this paper, the transmission of an improper-complex second-order stationary data sequence is considered over a strictly band-limited frequency-selective channel. It is assumed that the transmitter employs linear modulation and that the channel output is corrupted by additive proper-complex cyclostationary noise. Under the average transmit power constraint, the problem of minimizing the mean-squared error at the output of a widely linear receiver is formulated in the time domain to find the optimal transmit and receive waveforms. The optimization problem is converted into a frequency-domain …
In this paper, we investigate the spectral efficiency (SE) of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with a large number of antennas at the base station (BS) accounting for physical space constraints. In contrast to the vast body of related literature, which considers fixed inter-element spacing, we elaborate on a practical topology in which an increase in the number of antennas in a fixed total space induces an inversely proportional decrease in the inter-antenna distance. For this scenario, we derive exact and approximate expressions, as well as simplified upper/lower bounds, …
Classical beamforming techniques rely on highly linear transmitters and receivers to allow phase-coherent combining at the transmitter and receiver. The transmitter uses beamforming to steer signal power towards the receiver, and the receiver uses beamforming to gather and coherently combine the signals from multiple receiver antennas. When the transmitters and receivers are instead constrained for power and cost reasons to be non-linear one-bit devices, the potential advantages and performance metrics associated with beamforming are not as well understood. We define beamforming at the transmi…
Linear receivers offer a low complexity option for multi-antenna communication systems. Therefore, understanding the outage behavior of the corresponding SINR is important in a fading mobile environment. In this paper we introduce a large deviations method, valid nominally for a large number M of antennas, which provides the probability density of the SINR of Gaussian channel MIMO Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) and zero-forcing (ZF) receivers, with arbitrary transmission power profiles and in the presence of receiver antenna correlations. This approach extends the Gaussian approximation of t…
In frequency-selective channels linear receivers enjoy significantly-reduced complexity compared with maximum likelihood receivers at the cost of performance degradation which can be in the form of a loss of the inherent frequency diversity order or reduced coding gain. This paper demonstrates that the minimum mean-square error symbol-by-symbol linear equalizer incurs no diversity loss compared to the maximum likelihood receivers. In particular, for a channel with memory $ν$, it achieves the full diversity order of ($ν+1$) while the zero-forcing symbol-by-symbol linear equalizer always achieve…
We characterize the practical receiver in a wide range of signal intensity for optical wireless communication, from discrete pulse regime to continuous waveform regime. We first propose a statistical non-linear model based on the photomultiplier tube (PMT) multi-stage amplification and Poisson channel, and then derive the optimal and tractable suboptimal duty cycle with peak-power and average-power constraints for on-off key (OOK) modulation in linear regime. Subsequently, a threshold-based classifier is proposed to distinguish the PMT working regimes based on the non-linear model. Moreover, w…
Linear precoding and post-processing schemes are ubiquitous in wireless multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) settings, due to their reduced complexity with respect to optimal strategies. Despite their popularity, the performance analysis of linear MIMO receivers is mostly not available in closed form, apart for the canonical (uncorrelated Rayleigh fading) case, while for more general fading conditions only bounds are provided. This lack of results is motivated by the complex dependence of the output signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) at each branch of the receiving filter on both the squ…
We apply linear network coding (LNC) to broadcast a block of data packets from one sender to a set of receivers via lossy wireless channels, assuming each receiver already possesses a subset of these packets and wants the rest. We aim to characterize the average packet decoding delay (APDD), which reflects how soon each individual data packet can be decoded by each receiver on average, and to minimize it while achieving optimal throughput. To this end, we first derive closed-form lower bounds on the expected APDD of all LNC techniques under random packet erasures. We then prove that these boun…
Compute-and-forward (CPF) strategy is one category of network coding in which a relay will compute and forward a linear combination of source messages according to the observed channel coefficients, based on the algebraic structure of lattice codes. Recently, based on the idea of CPF, integer forcing (IF) linear receiver architecture for MIMO system has been proposed to recover different integer combinations of lattice codewords for further original message detection. In this paper, we consider the problem of IF linear receiver design with respect to the channel conditions. Instead of exhausti…
In this paper, we consider a multihop wireless sensor network (WSN) with multiple relay nodes for each hop where the amplify-and-forward (AF) scheme is employed. We present a strategy to jointly design the linear receiver and the power allocation parameters via an alternating optimization approach that maximizes the sum rate of the WSN. We derive constrained maximum sum-rate (MSR) expressions along with an algorithm to compute the linear receiver and the power allocation parameters with the optimal complex amplification coefficients for each relay node. Computer simulations show good performan…
We propose blind adaptive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) linear receivers for DS-CDMA systems using multiple transmit antennas and space-time block codes (STBC) in multipath channels. A space-time code-constrained constant modulus (CCM) design criterion based on constrained optimization techniques is considered and recursive least squares (RLS) adaptive algorithms are developed for estimating the parameters of the linear receivers. A blind space-time channel estimation method for MIMO DS-CDMA systems with STBC based on a subspace approach is also proposed along with an efficient RLS algorithm…
Interior-point algorithms constitute a very interesting class of algorithms for solving linear-programming problems. In this paper we study efficient implementations of such algorithms for solving the linear program that appears in the linear-programming decoder formulation.
We study index-coding problems (one sender broadcasting messages to multiple receivers) where each message is requested by one receiver, and each receiver may know some messages a priori. This type of index-coding problems can be fully described by directed graphs. The aim is to find the minimum codelength that the sender needs to transmit in order to simultaneously satisfy all receivers' requests. For any directed graph, we show that if a maximum acyclic induced subgraph (MAIS) is obtained by removing two or fewer vertices from the graph, then the minimum codelength (i.e., the solution to the…
In this paper, we characterize the degrees of freedom (DoF) for $K $-user $M \times 1 $ multiple-input single-output interference channels with reconfigurable antennas which have multiple preset modes at the receivers, assuming linear coding strategies in the absence of channel state information at the transmitters, i.e., blind interference alignment. Our linear DoF converse builds on the lemma that if a set of transmit symbols is aligned at their common unintended receivers, those symbols must have independent signal subspace at their corresponding receivers. This lemma arises from the inhere…
The performance of linear receivers in the presence of co-channel interference in Rayleigh channels is a fundamental problem in wireless communications. Performance evaluation for these systems is well-known for receive arrays where the antennas are close enough to experience equal average SNRs from a source. In contrast, almost no analytical results are available for macrodiversity systems where both the sources and receive antennas are widely separated. Here, receive antennas experience unequal average SNRs from a source and a single receive antenna receives a different average SNR from each…
In previous work, we demonstrated how decoding of a non-binary linear code could be formulated as a linear-programming problem. In this paper, we study different polytopes for use with linear-programming decoding, and show that for many classes of codes these polytopes yield a complexity advantage for decoding. These representations lead to polynomial-time decoders for a wide variety of classical non-binary linear codes.
Interference is a major issue limiting the performance in wireless networks. Cooperation among receivers can help mitigate interference by forming distributed MIMO systems. The rate at which receivers cooperate, however, is limited in most scenarios. How much interference can one bit of receiver cooperation mitigate? In this paper, we study the two-user Gaussian interference channel with conferencing decoders to answer this question in a simple setting. We identify two regions regarding the gain from receiver cooperation: linear and saturation regions. In the linear region receiver cooperation…
Finding the largest code with a given minimum distance is one of the most basic problems in coding theory. In this paper, we study the linear programming bound for codes in the Lee metric. We introduce refinements on the linear programming bound for linear codes in the Lee metric, which give a tighter bound for linear codes. We also discuss the computational aspects of the problem and introduce a more compact program by the obtained refinements, and a recursive method for computing the so-called Lee-numbers, which are important in the computation of the linear programming bound.
This paper presents widely-linear multi-branch decision feedback detection techniques for large-scale multiuser multiple-antenna systems. We consider a scenario with impairments in the radio-frequency chain in which the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) components exhibit an imbalance, which degrades the receiver performance and originates non-circular signals. A widely-linear multi-branch decision feedback receiver is developed to mitigate both the multiuser interference and the I/Q imbalance effects. An iterative detection and decoding scheme with the proposed receiver and convolutional codes …
Mathematical programming is a branch of applied mathematics and has recently been used to derive new decoding approaches, challenging established but often heuristic algorithms based on iterative message passing. Concepts from mathematical programming used in the context of decoding include linear, integer, and nonlinear programming, network flows, notions of duality as well as matroid and polyhedral theory. This survey article reviews and categorizes decoding methods based on mathematical programming approaches for binary linear codes over binary-input memoryless symmetric channels.
Integer-forcing receivers generalize traditional linear receivers for the multiple-input multiple-output channel by decoding integer-linear combinations of the transmitted streams, rather then the streams themselves. Previous works have shown that the additional degree of freedom in choosing the integer coefficients enables this receiver to approach the performance of maximum-likelihood decoding in various scenarios. Nonetheless, even for the optimal choice of integer coefficients, the additive noise at the equalizer's output is still correlated. In this work we study a variant of integer-forc…
Whereas many results are known about thresholds for ensembles of low-density parity-check codes under message-passing iterative decoding, this is not the case for linear programming decoding. Towards closing this knowledge gap, this paper presents some bounds on the thresholds of low-density parity-check code ensembles under linear programming decoding.
The two-sender groupcast index coding problem (TGICP) consists of a set of receivers, where all the messages demanded by the set of receivers are distributed among the two senders. The senders can possibly have a set of messages in common. Each message can be demanded by more than one receiver. Each receiver has a subset of messages (known as its side information) and demands a message it does not have. The objective is to design scalar linear codes at the senders with the minimum aggregate code length such that all the receivers are able to decode their demands, by leveraging the knowledge of…
The linear programming method is applied to the space $\U_n(\C)$ of unitary matrices in order to obtain bounds for codes relative to the diversity sum and the diversity product. Theoretical and numerical results improving previously known bounds are derived.
Let $A(n,d,w)$ be the largest possible size of an $(n,d,w)$ constant-weight binary code. By adding new constraints to Delsarte linear programming, we obtain twenty three new upper bounds on $A(n,d,w)$ for $n \leq 28$. The used techniques allow us to give a simple proof of an important theorem of Delsarte which makes linear programming possible for binary codes.
Consider the problem of a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Multiple-Access Channel (MAC) at the limit of large number of users. Clearly, in practical scenarios, only a small subset of the users can be scheduled to utilize the channel simultaneously. Thus, a problem of user selection arises. However, since solutions which collect Channel State Information (CSI) from all users and decide on the best subset to transmit in each slot do not scale when the number of users is large, distributed algorithms for user selection are advantageous. In this paper, we analyse a distributed user selection…
Consider a MIMO interference channel whereby each transmitter and receiver are equipped with multiple antennas. The basic problem is to design optimal linear transceivers (or beamformers) that can maximize system throughput. The recent work [1] suggests that optimal beamformers should maximize the total degrees of freedom and achieve interference alignment in high SNR. In this paper we first consider the interference alignment problem in spatial domain and prove that the problem of maximizing the total degrees of freedom for a given MIMO interference channel is NP-hard. Furthermore, we show th…
We study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the multiple-input multiple-output X-channel (MIMO XC) with delayed channel state information at the transmitters (delayed CSIT), assuming linear coding strategies at the transmitters. We present two results: 1) the linear sum DoF for MIMO XC with general antenna configurations, and 2) the linear DoF region for MIMO XC with symmetric antennas. The converse for each result is based on developing a novel rank-ratio inequality that characterizes the maximum ratio between the dimensions of received linear subspaces at the two multiple-antenna receivers. The…
In this paper, we construct an authentication scheme for multi-receivers and multiple messages based on a linear code $C$. This construction can be regarded as a generalization of the authentication scheme given by Safavi-Naini and Wang. Actually, we notice that the scheme of Safavi-Naini and Wang is constructed with Reed-Solomon codes. The generalization to linear codes has the similar advantages as generalizing Shamir's secret sharing scheme to linear secret sharing sceme based on linear codes. For a fixed message base field $\f$, our scheme allows arbitrarily many receivers to check the int…
Limited-backhaul cell-free Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), in which the fog radio access network (F-RAN) is implemented to exchange the information between access points (APs) and the central processing unit (CPU), is investigated. We introduce a novel approach where the APs estimate the channel and send back the quantized version of the estimated channel and the quantized version of the received signal to the central processing unit. The Max algorithm and the Bussgang theorem are exploited to model the optimum uniform quantization. The ergodic achievable rates are derived. We s…
The age of information (AoI) performance metric for point-to-point wireless communication systems is analytically studied under Rician-faded channels and when the receiver is equipped with multiple antennas. The general scenario of a non-linear AoI function is considered, which includes the conventional linear AoI as a special case. The stop-and-wait transmission policy is adopted, where the source node samples and then transmits new data only upon the successful reception of previous data. This approach can serve as a performance benchmark for any queuing system used in practice. New analytic…
A game-theoretic analysis is used to study the effects of receiver choice and transmit power on the energy efficiency of multi-hop networks in which the nodes communicate using Direct-Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA). A Nash equilibrium of the game in which the network nodes can choose their receivers as well as their transmit powers to maximize the total number of bits they transmit per unit of energy spent (including both transmit and operating energy) is derived. The energy efficiencies resulting from the use of different linear multiuser receivers in this context are compar…
In this paper we present a new Turbo analog error correcting coding scheme for real valued signals that are corrupted by impulsive noise. This Turbo code improves Donoho's deterministic construction by using a probabilistic approach. More specifically, our construction corrects more errors than the matrices of Donoho by allowing a vanishingly small probability of error (with the increase in block size). The problem of decoding the long block code is decoupled into two sets of parallel Linear Programming problems. This leads to a significant reduction in decoding complexity as compared to one-s…
Orthogonal time frequency space modulation is a two dimensional (2D) delay-Doppler domain waveform. It uses inverse symplectic Fourier transform (ISFFT) to spread the signal in time-frequency domain. To extract diversity gain from 2D spreaded signal, advanced receivers are required. In this work, we investigate a low complexity linear minimum mean square error receiver which exploits sparsity and quasi-banded structure of matrices involved in the demodulation process which results in a log-linear order of complexity without any performance degradation of BER.
The issue of non-cooperative transceiver optimization in the uplink of a multiuser wireless code division multiple access data network with widely-linear detection at the receiver is considered. While previous work in this area has focused on a simple real signal model, in this paper a baseband complex representation of the data is used, so as to properly take into account the I and Q components of the received signal. For the case in which the received signal is improper, a widely-linear reception structure, processing separately the data and their complex conjugates, is considered. Several n…
In this paper consider a two user multiple access channel with noisy feedback. There are two senders with independent messages who transmit symbols across an additive white Gaussian channel to a receiver, who in turn sends back a symbol which is received by the two senders through two independent noisy Gaussian channels. We consider the case when the feedback is active i.e. the receiver actively encodes the feedback using a linear state process. We pose this as a problem of linear sequential coding at the senders and the receiver to minimize the terminal mean square probability of error at the…
This paper focuses on the issue of energy efficiency in wireless data networks through a game theoretic approach. The case considered is that in which each user is allowed to vary its transmit power, spreading code, and uplink receiver in order to maximize its own utility, which is here defined as the ratio of data throughput to transmit power. In particular, the case in which linear multiuser detectors are employed at the receiver is treated first, and, then, the more challenging case in which non-linear decision feedback multiuser receivers are adopted is addressed. It is shown that, for bot…

In this paper, taking the view that a linear parallel interference canceller (LPIC) can be seen as a linear matrix filter, we propose new linear matrix filters that can result in improved bit error performance compared to other LPICs in the literature. The motivation for the proposed filters arises from the possibility of avoiding the generation of certain interference and noise terms in a given stage that would have been present in a conventional LPIC (CLPIC). In the proposed filters, we achieve such avoidance of the generation of interference and noise terms in a given stage by simply making…
