Gravitational contributions to the running of gauge couplings are calculated by using different regularization schemes. As the $β$ function concerns counter-terms of dimension four, only quadratic divergences from the gravitational contributions need to be investigated. A consistent result is obtained by using a symmetry-preserving loop regularization with string-mode regulators which can appropriately treat the quadratic divergences and preserve non-abelian gauge symmetry. The harmonic gauge condition for gravity is used in both diagrammatical and background field calculations, the resulting gravitational corrections to the $β$ function are found to be nonzero, which is different from previous results presented in the existing literatures.
Running of gauge couplings on a slice of AdS5 is examined using the deconstruction set-up. Logarithmic running instead of (linear) power law is justified when the cutoff is lower than the curvature scale. Most of interesting features in warped gauge theory including the localization of Kaluza-Klein modes, the widening of higher Kaluza-Klein spectrum spacing are well captured within the framework of the deconstruction.

We investigate the running gauge couplings of U(N) noncommutative gauge theories with compact extra dimensions. Power law running of the trace-U(1) gauge coupling in the ultraviolet is communicated to the infrared by ultraviolet/infrared mixing, whereas the SU(N) factors run exactly as in the commutative theory. This results in theories where the experimentally excluded trace-U(1) factors decouple with a power law running of the momentum in the extreme infrared, effectively hiding them from detection.
We show that there is no useful and universal definition of a running gravitational constant, G(E), in the perturbative regime below the Planck scale. By consideration of the loop corrections to several physical processes, we show that the quantum corrections vary greatly, in both magnitude and sign, and do not exhibit the required properties of a running coupling constant. We comment on the potential challenges of these results for the Asymptotic Safety program.
Newton's gravitational constant is shown to be a running coupling constant, much like the familiar running gauge couplings of the Standard Model. This implies that, in models with appropriate particle content, the true Planck scale, i.e. the scale at which quantum gravity effects become important, can have a value different from 10^19 GeV, which would be expected from naive dimensional analysis. Then, two scenarios involving this running effect are presented. The first one is a model which employs huge particle content to realize quantum gravity at the TeV scale in 4 dimensions, thereby solvin…
Concerning the gravitational corrections to the running of gauge couplings two different results were reported. Some authors claim that gravitational correction at the one-loop level indicates an interesting effect of universal gravitational decreasing of gauge couplings, that is, gravitational correction works universally in the direction of asymptotic freedom no matter how the gauge coupling behaves without gravity, while others reject the presence of gravitational correction at the one-loop level at all. Being these calculations done in the framework of an effective field theory approach to…
We consider the class of gauges that interpolates between Landau- and Coulomb-gauge QCD, and show the non-renormalisation of the two independent ghost-gluon vertices. This implies the existence of two RG-invariant running couplings, one of which is interpreted as an RG-invariant gauge parameter. We also present the asymptotic infrared limit of solutions of the Dyson-Schwinger equations in interpolating gauges. The infrared critical exponents of these solutions as well as the resulting infrared fixed point of one of the couplings are independent of the gauge parameter. This coupling also has a …
Approximate solutions for the gluon and ghost propagators as well as the running coupling in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theories are presented. These propagators obtained from the corresponding Dyson-Schwinger equations are in remarkable agreement with those of recent lattice calculations. The resulting running coupling possesses an infrared fixed point, $α_S(0) = 8.92/N_c$ for all gauge groups SU($N_c$). Above one GeV the running coupling rapidly approaches its perturbative form.
The question of a modification of the running gauge coupling of (non-) abelian gauge theories by an incorporation of the quantum gravity contribution has recently attracted considerable interest. In this letter we perform an involved diagrammatical calculation in the full Einstein-Yang-Mills system both in cut-off and dimensional regularization at one loop order. It is found that all gravitational quadratic divergencies cancel in cut-off regularization and are trivially absent in dimensional regularization so that there is no alteration to asymptotic freedom at high energies. The logarithmic d…
The effective average action of Yang-Mills theory is analyzed in the framework of exact renormalization group flow equations. Employing the background-field method and using a cutoff that is adjusted to the spectral flow, the running of the gauge coupling is obtained on all scales. In four dimensions and for the gauge groups SU(2) and SU(3), the coupling approaches a fixed point in the infrared.
We discuss the perturbative running Yang-Mills coupling constant in the Wilsonian exact renormalization group approach, and compare it to the running coupling in the more conventional MS-bar scheme. The exact renormalization group approach corresponds to a particular renormalization scheme, and we relate explicitly the corresponding Lambda-parameters. The unambiguous definition of an exact renormalization group scheme requires, however, the use of a one-loop improved high energy effective action.
We discuss how to define and obtain the running coupling of a gauge theory in the approach of the Schwinger-Dyson equation, in order to perform a non-perturbative study of the theory. For this purpose, we introduce the nonlocally generalized gauge fixing into the SD equation, which is used to define the running coupling constant (this method is applicable only to a gauge theory). Some advantages and validity of this approach are exemplified in QED3. This confirms the slowing down of the rate of decrease of the running coupling and the existence of non-trivial infra-red fixed point (in the norm…
The apparent unification of gauge couplings around 10^16 GeV is one of the strong arguments in favor of Supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model (SM). In this contribution two new analyses of the gauge coupling running, the latter using in contrast to previous studies not data at the Z peak but at LEP2 energies, are presented. The generic SUSY scale in the more precise novel approach is 93 < M_SUSY < 183 GeV, easily within LHC, and possibly even within Tevatron reach.
We investigate the renormalization group (RG) running of the effective potential and the pole mass in the broken symmetry phase of the $R_{ξ}$ and the $\overline{R_{ξ}}$ gauges which have different RG running for the effective potential in the symmetric phase and show that if the vacuum expectation value (VEV) is expressed as a function of the other parameters of the theory by solving the minimization condition, then the effective potential in the broken symmetry phase in both gauges satisfies the same RG equation as one in the symmetric phase of the $\overline{R_{ξ}}$ gauge. The pole masses i…
We consider the gauge coupling running in a six-dimensional SO(10) orbifold GUT model. The bulk gauge symmetry is broken down to the standard model gauge group with an extra U(1)_X by orbifold boundary conditions and the extra U(1)_X is further broken through the U(1)_{B-L} breaking with bulk hyper multiplets. We obtain the corrections of Kaluza-Klein massive modes to the running of the gauge couplings and discuss their implication to the successful gauge coupling unification.
We study the question of a modification of the running gauge coupling of Yang-Mills theories due to quantum gravitational effects in a compact large extra dimensional brane world scenario with a low energy quantum gravity scale. The ADD scenario is applied for a D=d+δdimensional space-time in which gravitons freely propagate, whereas the non-abelian gauge fields are confined to a d-dimensional brane. The extra dimensions are taken to be toroidal and the transverse fluctuation modes (branons) of the brane are taken into account. On this basis we have calculated the one-loop corrections due to v…
According to a recent paper by Robinson and Wilczek, the leading gravitational corrections to the running of gauge couplings tend to reduce the values of the couplings at energies below the gravitational scale, defined to be the energy above which gravity becomes strongly interacting. If the physical gravitational scale is sufficiently low, as conjectured in certain extra-dimension models, this behavior of the gauge couplings can be measured in future high energy experiments, providing a way to determine where the gravitational scale lies. We estimate that measurements of the fine structure co…
The running of the coupling is studied in SU(4) gauge theory using the Schrödinger functional technique. Up to energies of the order of the square root of the string tension $σ$, the running is found to agree with the two-loop perturbative formula. Relating the perturbative to the non-perturbative regime of the running and converting to the $\msbar$ scheme allows one to extract the ratio $Λ_{\msbar}/\sqrtσ$. The result is then used in combination with similar calculations present in the literature for SU(2) and SU(3) to extract $Λ_{\msbar}/\sqrtσ$ in the large $N$ limit. Our results for $N=3,4…
Gluon propagator in the infrared limit, computed in the Landau gauge, can be cast into an universal form with a running mass for the gluon. In this way we are able to show that all the proposals appeared so far in literature are equivalent and describe the same physics. In this way, it appears essential to reach a general agreement about the interpretation of such results. We discuss the points that make difficult to agree on a similar view about this.
We summarise results for the running coupling from the four-gluon vertex in Landau gauge, SU($N_c$) Yang-Mills theory as given by a combination of dressing functions of the vertex and the gluon propagator. These functions have been determined numerically from the corresponding set of Dyson-Schwinger equations. In the infrared we obtain a nontrivial infrared fixed point which is three orders of magnitude smaller than the corresponding one in the coupling of the ghost-gluon vertex.
We generalize the two-loop renormalization group equations for the parameters of the softly broken SUSY gauge theories given in the literature to the most general case when the gauge group contains more than a single abelian gauge factor. The complete method is illustrated at two-loop within a specific example and compared to some of the previously proposed partial treatments.
We study the gravitational correction to the gauge couplings in the extra dimension model where the gravity propagates in the (4+n)-dimensional bulk. We show by explicit calculation in the background field method that the one-loop correction coming from graviton Kaluza-Klein states is nontrivial and tends to make the theory anti-asymptotically free. For the theory characterized with asymptotic freedom, the correction will induce a nontrivial UV-stable fixed point. This may lead to an interesting possibility that the non-abelian gauge coupling constants $g_2$ and $g_3$ in the SM and that of the…
If the gravitational interaction is unified with the electroweak and strong interactions at a mass M=10^15 GeV, the evolution of Newton's constant must differ from its classical (general relativistic) form. We can model such behavior by introducing an ad hoc dependence on ln(s/4m^2) where s is the usual cm energy between two protons. We can then predict the observable effects for relativistic collisions (sqrt(s)~1.4x10^4 GeV) as well as for the case of low velocity motion (beta^2~10^-5)
We use compact D=4, N=1, Type IIB orientifolds as a testing ground for recent ideas about precocious gauge coupling unification and a low energy string scale. We find that certain such orientifolds have the interesting property that gauge couplings receive moduli-dependent corrections which mimic the effect of field theoretical logarithmic running. The effective cut-off scale for the logarithmic correction is not $M_{string}$ but rather $M_X=\sqrtαM_{Planck}M_c/M_{string}$, where $M_c$ is the compactification scale. Thus there is just normal logarithmic running up to $M_{string}$ and extra mod…
We calculate the lattice quark propagator in Coulomb gauge both from dynamical and quenched configurations. We show that in the continuum limit both the static and full quark propagator are multiplicatively renormalizable. From the propagator we extract the quark renormalization function Z(|p|) and the running mass M(|p|) and extrapolate the latter to the chiral limit. We find that M(|p|) practically coincides with the corresponding Landau gauge function for small momenta. The computation of M(|p|) can be however made more efficient in Coulomb gauge; this can lead to a better determination of …
The conformal anomaly has provided an expression for the effective action of gauge theories in the presence of a strong background field in terms of the running coupling constant. We exploit this result to find a novel expansion for the running coupling.
The infrared behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators in Landau gauge QCD is reviewed. The Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion and the Gribov-Zwanziger horizon condition result from quite general properties of the ghost Dyson-Schwinger equation. The numerical solutions for the gluon and ghost propagators obtained from a truncated set of Dyson-Schwinger equations provide an explicit example for the anticipated infrared behaviour. The results are in good agreement with corresponding lattice data obtained recently. The resulting running coupling approaches a fix point in the infrared, $α(0) = 8.…
We study the two-loop renormalization group equation for the running gaugino mass in the supersymmetric gauge theory. We find that both in the \msbar and \drbar renormalization schemes, the well-known proportionality of the runnings of the gaugino mass and the gauge coupling constant is violated at the two-loop order, even in models with vector supermultiplets only. Scheme dependence of the running gaugino mass is clarified.
The use of a running coupling constant in renormalizable theories is well known, but the implementation of this idea for effective field theories with a dimensional coupling constant is in general less useful. Nevertheless there are multiple attempts to define running couplings including the effects of gravity, with varying conclusions. We sort through many of the issues involved, most particularly the idea of operator mixing and also the kinematics of crossing, using calculations in Yukawa and lambda phi^4 theory as illustrative examples. We remain in the perturbative regime. In some theories…
Non-Abelian gauge theories with fermions transforming in the adjoint representation of the gauge group (AdjQCD) are a fundamental ingredient of many models that describe the physics beyond the Standard Model. Two relevant examples are N=1 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and Minimal Walking Technicolor, which are gauge theories coupled to one adjoint Majorana and two adjoint Dirac fermions, respectively. While confinement is a property of N=1 SYM, Minimal Walking Technicolor is expected to be infrared conformal. We study the propagators of ghost and gluon fields in the Landau gauge to co…
Some features of the solutions to the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations(DSEs) for the propagators of QCD in Landau gauge are summarized. In particular, the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion is realized, and positivity of transverse gluons is manifestly violated in these solutions. In Landau gauge, the gluon-ghost vertex function offers a convenient possibility to define a nonperturbative running coupling. The infrared fixed point obtained from this coupling which determines the 2-point interactions of color-octet quark currents implies the existence of unphysical massless states which are nec…
We examine the relation of the 4-dimensional low energy coupling of bulk gauge boson in a slice of AdS5 to the 5-dimensional fundamental couplings as a function of the orbifold radius R. This allows us to address the gauge coupling unification in AdS5 by means of the radius running as well as the conventional momentum running. We then compute the radius dependence of 1-loop low energy couplings in generic AdS5 theory with 4-dimensional supersymmetry, and discuss the low energy predictions when the 5-dimensional couplings are assumed to be unified.
We consider the lowest order quantum gravitational corrections to Yukawa and Phi^4 interactions. Our results show that quantum gravity leads to contributions to the running coupling constants if the particles are massive and therefore alters the scaling behavior of the Standard Model. Furthermore, we find that the gravitational contributions to the running of the masses vanish.
Gravity is the weakest force in nature, and the gravitational interactions with all standard model (SM) particles can be well described by perturbative expansions of the Einstein-Hilbert action as an effective theory, all the way up to energies below the fundamental Planck scale. We use Vilkovisky-DeWitt method to derive the first gauge-invariant nonzero gravitational power-law corrections to the running of gauge couplings, which make both Abel and non-Abel gauge interactions asymptotically free. We further demonstrate that the graviton-induced universal power-law runnings always assist the th…
The amount of dark matter in the Milky Way and beyond is examined by taking into account the possible running of the gravitational constant $G$ as a function of distance scale. If the running of $G$, as suggested by the Asymptotically-Free Higher-Derivative quantum gravity, is incorporated into the calculation of the total dark matter in the galactic halo, the amount of dark matter that is necessary to explain the rotation curve is shown to be reduced by one third compared with the standard calculations. However, this running of $G$ alone cannot reproduce the observed flat behavior of the rota…
We investigate the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD by means of a recently proposed approximation scheme in the Landau-gauge Curci-Ferrari model, which combines an expansion in the Yang-Mills coupling and in the inverse number of colors, without expanding in the quark-gluon coupling. The expansion allows for a consistent treatment of ultraviolet tails via renormalization group techniques. At leading order, it leads to the resummation of rainbow diagrams for the quark propagator, with, however, a trivial running of both the gluon mass and the quark-gluon coupling. In a previous wo…
We perform an explicit one-loop calculation for the gravitational contributions to the two-, three- and four-point gauge Green's functions with paying attention to the quadratic divergences. It is shown for the first time in the diagrammatic calculation that the Slavnov-Taylor identities are preserved even if the quantum graviton effects are included at one-loop level, such a conclusion is independent of the choice of regularization schemes. We also present a regularization scheme independent calculation based on the gauge condition independent background field framework of Vilkovisky-DeWitt's…
We revisit quantum gravitational contributions to quantum gauge field theories in the gauge condition independent Vilkovisky-DeWitt formalism based on the background field method. With the advantage of Landau-DeWitt gauge, we explicitly obtain the gauge condition independent result for the quadratically divergent gravitational corrections to gauge couplings. By employing, in a general way, a scheme-independent regularization method that can preserve both gauge invariance and original divergent behavior of integrals, we show that the resulting gauge coupling is power-law running and asymptotica…
We consider the gravitational correction to the running of gauge coupling. Weak gravity conjecture implies that the gauge theories break down when the gravitational correction becomes greater than the contribution from gauge theories. This observation can be generalized to non-Abelian gauge theories in diverse dimensions and the cases with large extra dimensions.
Using holography, we study the low-lying mesonic spectrum of a range of asymptotically free gauge theories. First we revisit a simple top-down holographic model of QCD-like dynamics with predictions in the M_rho-M_pi plane. The meson masses in this model are in very good agreement with lattice gauge theory calculations in the quenched approximation. We show that the key ingredient for the meson mass predictions is the running of the anomalous dimension of the quark condensate, gamma. This provides an explanation for the agreement of holographic and quenched lattice gauge theory calculations. W…
We discuss whether the (MSSM) unification of gauge couplings can be accommodated in string theories with a low (TeV) string scale. This requires either power law running of the couplings or logarithmic running extremely far above the string scale. In both cases it is difficult to arrange for the multiplet structure to give the MSSM result. For the case of power law running there is also enhanced sensitivity to the spectrum at the unification scale. For the case of logarithmic running there is a fine tuning problem associated with the light closed string Kaluza Klein spectrum which requires gau…
Unparticles charged under a gauge group can contribute to the running of the gauge coupling. We show that a scalar unparticle of scaling dimension d contributes to the βfunction a term that is (2-d) times that from a scalar particle in the same representation. This result has important implications on asymptotic freedom. An unparticle with d>2, in contrast to its matter counterpart, can speed up the approach to asymptotic freedom for a non-Abelian gauge theory and has the tendency to make an Abelian theory also asymptotically free. For not spoiling the excellent agreement of the standard model…
In the exploration of viable models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, it is essential to locate the lower end of the conformal window and know the mass anomalous dimensions there for a variety of gauge theories. We calculate, with the Schrödinger functional scheme, the running coupling constant and the mass anomalous dimension of SU(2) gauge theory with six massless Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation. The calculations are performed on $6^4$ - $24^4$ lattices over a wide range of lattice bare couplings to take the continuum limit. The discretization errors for both quant…
The apparent unification of gauge couplings in Grand Unified Theories around 10$^{16}$ GeV is one of the strong arguments in favor of Supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. In this paper, an analysis of the measurements of the strong coupling running from the CMS experiment at the LHC is combined with a "traditional" gauge coupling unification analysis using data at the Z peak. This approach places powerful constraints on the possible scales of new physics and on the parameters around the unification scale. A supersymmetric analysis without GUT threshold corrections describes the CMS…
We present a model for the Universe in which quantum anomalies are argued to play an important dual role: they are responsible for generating matter-antimatter asymmetry, but also provide time-dependent contributions to the vacuum energy density of "running-vacuum" type, which drive the Universe evolution. During the inflationary phase of a string-inspired Universe, and its subsequent exit, the existence of primordial gravitational waves induce gravitational anomalies, which couple to the Kalb-Ramond (KR)axion field of the massless gravitational string multiplet. Such anomalous CP violating in…
In the recent literature on dark energy (DE) model building we have learnt that cosmologies with variable cosmological parameters can mimic more traditional DE pictures exclusively based on scalar fields (e.g. quintessence and phantom). In a previous work we have illustrated this situation within the context of a renormalization group running cosmological term, Lambda. Here we analyze the possibility that both the cosmological term and the gravitational coupling, G, are running parameters within a more general framework (a variant of the so-called ``LXCDM models'') in which the DE fluid can be…
We consider the running coupling from the four-gluon vertex in Landau gauge, SU($N_c$) Yang-Mills theory as given by a combination of dressing functions of the vertex and the gluon propagator. We determine these functions numerically from a coupled set of Dyson-Schwinger equations. We reproduce asymptotic freedom in the ultraviolet momentum region and find a coupling of order one at mid-momenta. In the infrared we find a nontrivial (i.e. nonzero) fixed point which is three orders of magnitude smaller than the corresponding fixed point in the coupling of the ghost-gluon vertex. This result expl…
We study the evolution of the coupling in SU(2) gauge field theory with $N_f=8$ fundamental fermion flavors on the lattice. This model is expected to have an infrared fixed point at high coupling. We use HEX-smeared Wilson-clover action, and measure the gradient flow running coupling with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Extrapolating our results to continuum, we find an infrared fixed point at $g^2=8.24(59)^{+0.97}_{-1.64}$, with statistical and systematic error estimates. We also measure the anomalous dimension of the quark mass operator, and find its value at the fixed point $γ\approx 0.15 \p…
The gravitational equations of the three dimensional (3D) brane world are investigated for both off-diagonal and warped 5D metrics which can be diagonalized with respect to some anholonomic frames when the gravitational and matter fields dynamics are described by mixed sets of holonomic and anholonomic variables. We construct two new classes of exact solutions of Kaluza-Klein gravity which generalize the Randall-Sundrum metrics to configurations with running on the 5th coordinate gravitational constant and anisotropic dependencies of effective 4D constants on time and/or space variables. We co…
I review a string-inspired cosmological model with gravitational anomalies in its early epochs, which is based on fields from the (bosonic) massless gravitational multiplet of strings, in particular gravitons and Kalb Ramond (KR), string-model independent, axions (the dilaton is assumed constant). I show how condensation of primordial gravitational waves, which are generared at the very early eras immediately after the big bang, can lead to inflation of the so called running vacuum model (RVM) type, without external inflatons. The role of the slow-roll field is played by the KR axion, but it d…
In this letter, we elaborate further on a Cosmological "Running-Vacuum" type model for the Universe, suggested previously by the authors within the context of a string-inspired effective theory in the presence of a Kalb-Ramond (KR) gravitational axion field which descends from the antisymmetric tensor of the massless gravitational string multiplet. In the presence of this field, which has anomalous CP violating interactions with the gravitons, primordial gravitational waves induce gravitational anomalies, which in turn are responsible for the appearance of $H^2$ and $H^4$ contributions to the …
We extract the running coupling based on Creutz ratios in SU(2) lattice gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the adjoint representation. Depending on how the extrapolation to zero fermion mass is performed, either backward running or an absence of running is observed at strong bare coupling. This behavior is consistent with other findings which indicate that this theory has an infrared fixed point.
The interpretation of the Landau gauge lattice gluon propagator as a massive type bosonic propagator is investigated. Three different scenarios are discussed: i) an infrared constant gluon mass; ii) an ultraviolet constant gluon mass; iii) a momentum dependent mass. We find that the infrared data can be associated with a massive propagator up to momenta $\sim 500$ MeV, with a constant gluon mass of 723(11) MeV, if one excludes the zero momentum gluon propagator from the analysis, or 648(7) MeV, if the zero momentum gluon propagator is included in the data sets. The ultraviolet lattice data is …
Quantum-gravity renders the space-time dimension to depend on the size of region; it monotonically increases with the size of region and asymptotically approaches four for large distances. This effect was discovered in numerical simulations of lattice quantum gravity in the framework of causal dynamical triangulation [hep-th/0505113] as well as in renormalization group approach to quantum gravity [hep-th/0508202]. However, along these approaches the interpretation and the physical meaning of the effective change of dimension at shorter scales is not clear. Without invoking particular models in…
We examine the renormalization of Lee-Wick gauge theory to one loop order. We show that only knowledge of the wavefunction renormalization is necessary to determine the running couplings, anomalous dimensions, and vector boson masses. In particular, the logarithmic running of the Lee-Wick vector boson mass is exactly related to the running of the coupling. In the case of an asymptotically free theory, the vector boson mass runs to infinity in the ultraviolet. Thus, the UV fixed point of the pure gauge theory is an ordinary quantum field theory. We find that the coupling runs more quickly in Le…
The cosmological term, $Λ$, in Einstein's equations is an essential ingredient of the `concordance' $Λ$CDM model of cosmology. In this mini-review presentation, we assess the possibility that $Λ$ can be a dynamical quantity, more specifically a `running quantity' in quantum field theory in curved spacetime. A great deal of phenomenological works have shown in the last few years that this option (sometimes accompanied with a running gravitational coupling) may cure some of the tensions afflicting the $Λ$CDM. The `running vacuum models' (RVM's) are characterized by the vacuum energy density, $ρ_…
We have measured the running coupling constant of SU(3) gauge theory coupled to Nf=2 flavors of symmetric representation fermions, using the Schrodinger functional scheme. Our lattice action is defined with hypercubic smeared links which, along with the larger lattice sizes, bring us closer to the continuum limit than in our previous study. We observe that the coupling runs more slowly than predicted by asymptotic freedom, but we are unable to observe fixed point behavior before encountering a first order transition to a strong coupling phase. This indicates that the infrared fixed point found…
