We describe in detail how to perform universal fault-tolerant quantum computation on a 2-D color code, making use of only nearest neighbor interactions. Three defects (holes) in the code are used to represent logical qubits. Triple defect logical qubits are deformed into isolated triangular sections of color code to enable transversal implementation of all single logical qubit Clifford group gates. CNOT is implemented between pairs of triple defect logical qubits via braiding.
Toric codes and color codes are two important classes of topological codes. Kubica, Yoshida, and Pastawski showed that any $D$-dimensional color code can be mapped to a finite number of toric codes in $D$-dimensions. In this paper we propose an alternate map of 3D color codes to 3D toric codes with a view to decoding 3D color codes. Color codes are a class of topological quantum codes with a high error threshold and large set of transversal encoded gates, and are thus suitable for fault tolerant quantum computation in two-dimensional architectures. Recently, computationally efficient decoders for the color codes were proposed. We describe an alternate efficient iterative decoder for topological color codes, and apply it to the color code on hexagonal lattice embedded on a torus. In numerical simulations, we find an error threshold of 7.8% for independent dephasing and spin flip errors.

We introduce an efficient decoder of the color code in $d\geq 2$ dimensions, the Restriction Decoder, which uses any $d$-dimensional toric code decoder combined with a local lifting procedure to find a recovery operation. We prove that the Restriction Decoder successfully corrects errors in the color code if and only if the corresponding toric code decoding succeeds. Color codes are topological stabilizer codes with unusual transversality properties. Here I show that their group of transversal gates is optimal and only depends on the spatial dimension, not the local geometry. I also introduce a generalized, subsystem version of color codes. In 3D they allow the transversal implementation of a universal set of gates by gauge fixing, while error-detecting measurements involve only 4 or 6 qubits.

Here we show that the color code on a $d$-dimensional closed manifold is equivalent to multiple decoupled copies of the $d$-dimensional toric code up to local unitary transformations and adding or removing ancilla qubits. We demonstrate how to use lattice surgery to enact a universal set of fault-tolerant quantum operations with color codes. Along the way, we also improve existing surface-code lattice-surgery methods. Lattice-surgery methods use fewer qubits and the same time or less than associated defect-braiding methods. We introduce a decoder for the 3D color code with boundaries, which is a variation of the restriction decoder introduced by Kubicka and Delfosse. Specifically, we adapt the lift procedure to efficiently find a correction on qubits adjacent to a boundary. We numerically estimate a threshold of $4\% - 8\%$ for Pauli $X$ errors and a threshold of $0.7\% - 0.8\%$ for Pauli $Z$ errors. Our work is a first step towards characterizing the performance of Bombín's recently proposed "colorful quantum computing."

Thermal stability of the Topological Color Code in presence of a thermal bath is studied. We study the Lindblad evolution of the observables in the weak coupling limit of the Born-Markov approximation. The auto-correlation functions of the observables are used as a figure of merit for the thermal stability. We show that all of the observables auto-correlation functions decay exponentially in time. In particular, we morph the 15-qubit Reed-Muller code to obtain a $[\![10,1,2]\!]$ code that is the smallest known stabilizer code with a fault-tolerant logical $T$ gate. In addition, we construct a family of hybrid color-toric codes by morphing the color code. This provides a method to transform every decoding algorithm of surface codes into a decoding algorithm of color codes. We introduce a two-body quantum Hamiltonian model with spins-$\half$ located on the vertices of a 2D spatial lattice. The model exhibits an exact topological degeneracy in all coupling regimes. This is a remarkable non-perturbative effect. The model has a $\Z_2\times \Z_2$ gauge group symmetry and string-net integrals of motion. There exists a gapped phase in which the low-energy sector reproduces an effective topological color code model. We establish and explore a new connection between quantum information theory and classical statistical mechanics by studying the problem of qubit losses in 2D topological color codes. We introduce a protocol to cope with qubit losses, which is based on the identification and removal of a twin qubit from the code, and which guarantees the recovery of a valid three-colorable and trivalent reconstructed color code lattice. We describe a quantum scheme to ``color-code'' a set of objects in order to record which one is which. In the classical case, N distinct colors are required to color-code N objects. We show that in the quantum case, only N/e distinct ``colors'' are required, where e = 2.71828 . . . If the number of colors is less than optimal, the objects may still be correctly distinguished with some success probability less than 1. We show that the success probability of the quantum scheme is better than the corresponding classical one and is information-theoretically optimal.
