In this paper D-brane monodromies are studied from a world-sheet point of view. More precisely, defect lines are used to describe the parallel transport of D-branes along deformations of the underlying bulk conformal field theories. This method is used to derive B-brane monodromies in Kahler moduli spaces of non-linear sigma models on projective hypersurfaces. The corresponding defects are constructed at Landau-Ginzburg points in these moduli spaces where matrix factorisation techniques can be used. Transporting them to the large volume phase by means of the gauged linear sigma model we find that their action on B-branes at large volume can be described by certain Fourier-Mukai transformations which are known from target space geometric considerations to represent the corresponding monodromies.
The aim of this work is to analyze Kaehler moduli space monodromies of string compactifications. This is achieved by investigating the monodromy action upon D-brane probes, which we model in the Landau-Ginzburg phase in terms of matrix factorizations. The two-dimensional cubic torus and the quintic Calabi-Yau hypersurface serve as our two prime examples.
RR fluxes representing different cohomology classes may correspond to the same twisted K-theory class. We argue that such fluxes are related by monodromies, generalizing and sometimes T-dual to the familiar monodromies of a D7-brane. A generalized theta angle is also transformed, but changes by a multiple of 2pi. As an application, NS5-brane monodromies modify the twisted K-theory classification of fluxes. Furthermore, in the noncompact case K-theory does not distinguish flux configurations in which dG is nontrivial in compactly supported cohomology. Such fluxes are realized as the decay produ…
An important subclass of D-branes on a Calabi-Yau manifold, X, are in 1-1 correspondence with objects in D(X), the derived category of coherent sheaves on X. We study the action of the monodromies in Kaehler moduli space on these D-branes. We refine and extend a conjecture of Kontsevich about the form of one of the generators of these monodromies (the monodromy about the "conifold" locus) and show that one can do quite explicit calculations of the monodromy action in many examples. As one application, we verify a prediction of Mayr about the action of the monodromy about the Landau-Ginsburg lo…
The infrared formula relates the Schur index of a 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory to its wall-crossing invariant, a.k.a. BPS monodromy. A further extension of this formula, proposed by Córdova, Gaiotto and Shao, includes contributions by various types of line and surface defects. We study BPS monodromies in the presence of vortex surface defects of arbitrary vorticity for general class $\mathcal{S}$ theories of type $A_1$ engineered by UV curves with at least one regular puncture. The trace of these defect BPS monodromies is shown to coincide with the action of certain $q$-difference operators actin…
We explore some aspects of monodromies of D-branes in the Kahler moduli space of Calabi-Yau compactifications. Here a D-brane is viewed as an object of the derived category of coherent sheaves. We compute all the interesting monodromies in some nontrivial examples and link our work to recent results and conjectures concerning helices and mutations. We note some particular properties of the 0-brane.
Fibrewise T-duality (Fourier-Mukai transform) for D-branes on an elliptic Calabi-Yau three-fold $X$ is seen to have an expected adiabatic form for its induced cohomology operation only when an appropriately twisted operation resp. twisted charge is defined. Some differences with the case of $K3$ as well as connections with the spectral cover construction for bundles on $X$ are pointed out. In the context of mirror symmetry Kontsevich's association of line bundle twists (resp. a certain 'diagonal' operation) with monodromies (esp. the conifold monodromy) is made explicit and checked for two exa…
We analyze the link between the occurrence of massless B-type D-branes for specific values of moduli and monodromy around such points in the moduli space. This allows us to propose a classification of all massless B-type D-branes at any point in the moduli space of Calabi-Yau's. This classification then justifies a previous conjecture due to Horja for the general form of monodromy. Our analysis is based on using monodromies around points in moduli space where a single D-brane becomes massless to generate monodromies around points where an infinite number become massless. We discuss the various…
We illustrate a framework for constructing models of chaotic inflation where the inflaton is the position of a D3 brane along the universal cover of a string compactification. In our scenario, a brane rolls many times around a non-trivial one-cycle, thereby unwinding a Ramond-Ramond flux. These "flux monodromies" are similar in spirit to the monodromies of Silverstein, Westphal, and McAllister, and their four-dimensional description is that of Kaloper and Sorbo. Assuming moduli stabilization is rigid enough, the large-field inflationary potential is protected from radiative corrections by a di…
We discuss aspects of topological B-type D-branes in the framework of the derived category of coherent sheaves on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold X. We analyze the link between massless D-branes and monodromies in the CFT moduli space. A classification of all massless D-branes at any point in the moduli space is conjectured, together with an associated monodromy. We test the conjectures in two independent ways. First we establish a composition formula for certain Fourier-Mukai functors, which is a consequence of the triangulated structure of D(X). Secondly, using pi-stability we rederive the stable solito…
We consider the simplest possible setting of non abelian twist fields which corresponds to $SU(2)$ monodromies. We first review the theory of hypergeometric function and of the solutions of the most general Fuchsian second order equation with three singularities. Then we solve the problem of writing the general solution with prescribed $U(2)$ monodromies. We use this result to compute the classical string solution corresponding to three $D2$ branes in $R^4$. Despite the fact the configuration is supersymmetric the classical string solution is not holomorphic. Using the equation of motion and n…
We study the interplay between discrete quantum symmetries at certain points in the moduli space of Calabi-Yau compactifications, and the associated identities that the geometric realization of D-brane monodromies must satisfy. We show that in a wide class of examples, both local and compact, the monodromy identities in question always follow from a single mathematical statement. One of the simplest examples is the Z_5 symmetry at the Gepner point of the quintic, and the associated D-brane monodromy identity.
The defects and permutation branes for the Liouville field theory are considered. By exploiting cluster condition, equations satisfied by permutation branes and defects reflection amplitudes are obtained. It is shown that two types of solutions exist, discrete and continuous families.
Topological defects are generically expected to form in models of brane inflation. Brane-anti-brane annihilation provides a way to gracefully end inflation, and the dynamics of the tachyon field results in defect formation. The formation of defects has been studied mainly from the brane world-volume point of view, but the defects are themselves lower-dimensional branes, and as a result they couple to bulk fields. To investigate the impact of bulk fields on brane defect formation, we construct a toy model that captures the essential features of the tachyon condensation with bulk fields. In this…
We discuss D-brane monodromies from the point of view of the gauged linear sigma model. We give a prescription on how to extract monodromy matrices directly from the hemisphere partition function. We illustrate this procedure by recomputing the monodromy matrices associated to one-parameter Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projected space.
We define the notion of A-model Lagrangian D-branes as introducing defects in the Calabi-Yau crystal. The crystal melting in the presence of these defects reproduces all genus string amplitudes as well as leads to additional non-perturbative terms.
We study phase transitions induced by topological defects in Abelian gauge theories of open p-branes in (d+1) space-time dimensions. Starting from a massive antisymmetric tensor theory for open p-branes we show how the condensation of topological defects can lead to a decoupled phase with a massless tensor coupled to closed (p-1)-branes and a massive tensor coupled to open (p+1)-branes. We also consider the case, relevant in string theory, in which the boundaries of the p-branes are constrained to live on a Dirichlet n-branes.
We study a local description of composite five-branes of codimension two. The formulation is constructed by virtue of $SL(2,{\mathbb Z}) \times SL(2,{\mathbb Z)}$ monodromy associated with two-torus. Applying conjugate monodromy transformations to the complex structures of the two-torus, we obtain a field configuration of a defect $(p,q)$ five-brane. This is a composite state of $p$ defect NS5-branes and $q$ exotic $5^2_2$-branes. We also obtain a new example of hyper-Kähler geometry. This is an ALG space, a generalization of an ALF space which asymptotically has a tri-holomorphic two-torus ac…
In a tachyon effective field theory of a non-BPS brane, we construct a classical solution representing a parallel brane-antibrane. The solution is made of a kink and an antikink placed at antipodal points of S^1. Estimation of the brane energy suggests an excitation of a string connecting the two branes, even though the theory is Abelian. We performed fluctuation analysis around the obtained solution, and find the structure of the supersymmetry breaking by the co-existence of the brane and the antibrane. We discuss possible processes of the pair-annihilation of the brane defect.
We study T-branes on compact Kaehler surfaces, in the presence of fields localised at curves. If such fields are treated as defects, their vevs induce delta-function sources for the 7-brane background, possibly leading to profiles with poles. We find that the presence of defect sources relaxes the constraints on globally well-defined T-brane configurations, avoiding the obstruction to building them on surfaces of positive curvature. Profiles with poles can be understood, from a 4d viewpoint, as non-trivial vevs for massive modes induced by the defects, and come with their own set of constraint…
Brane inflation and the production of topological defects at the end of the inflationary phase are discussed. After a description of the inflationary setup we discuss the properties of the cosmic strings produced at the end of inflation. Specific examples of brane inflation are described: $D-\bar D$ inflation, $D3/D7$ inflation and modular inflation
We establish that the relevant geometric data for the target space description of world sheet topological defects are submanifolds - which we call bi-branes - in the product M1 x M2 of the two target spaces involved. Very much like branes, they are equipped with a vector bundle, which in backgrounds with non-trivial B-field is actually a twisted vector bundle. We explain how to define Wess-Zumino terms in the presence of bi-branes and discuss the fusion of bi-branes. In the case of WZW theories, symmetry preserving bi-branes are shown to be biconjugacy classes. The algebra of functions on a bi…
We study analytically the dynamical formation of lower dimensional branes at the endpoint of brane-antibrane inflation through the condensation of topological defects of the tachyon field which describes the instability of the initial state. We then use this information to quantify the efficiency of the reheating which is due to the coupling of time dependent tachyon background to massless gauge fields which will be localized on the final state branes. We improve upon previous estimates indicating that this can be an efficient reheating mechanism for observers on the brane.
The defect conformal field theory describing intersecting D3-branes at a C^2/Z_k orbifold is used to (de)construct the theory of intersecting M5-branes, as well as M5-branes wrapping the holomorphic curve xy=c. The possibility of a 't Hooft anomaly due to tensionless strings at the intersection is discussed. This note is based on a talk given by Zachary Guralnik at the 35th International Symposium Ahrenshoop on the Theory of Elementary Particles.
We investigate a five-branes interpretation of hyper-Kähler geometry with torsion (HKT). This geometry is obtained by conformal transformation of the Taub-NUT space which represents a Kaluza-Klein five-brane. This HKT would represent an NS5-brane on the Taub-NUT space. In order to explore the HKT further, we compactify one transverse direction, and study the $O(2,2;{\mathbb Z}) = SL(2,{\mathbb Z}) \times SL(2,{\mathbb Z})$ monodromy structure associated with two-torus. Performing the conjugate transformation, we obtain a new solution whose physical interpretation is a defect $(p,q)$ five-brane…
A generic half-BPS surface defect of ${\mathcal N}=4$ supersymmetric U$(N)$ Yang-Mills theory is described by a partition of $N = n_1 + \ldots + n_M$ and a set of $4M$ continuous parameters. We show that such a defect can be realized by $n_I$ stacks of fractional D3-branes in Type II B string theory on a $\mathbb{Z}_M$ orbifold background in which the brane world-volume is partially extended along the orbifold directions. In this set up we show that the $4M$ continuous parameters correspond to constant background values of certain twisted closed string scalars of the orbifold. These results ex…
We use holography to study codimension-2 surface defects in 5d SCFTs engineered by $(p,q)$ 5-brane webs. The three-dimensional defects are realized by D3-branes ending on the brane web. We identify the holographic representation of the defects in Type IIB $AdS_6$ solutions as probe D3-branes, and study conformal and non-conformal defects which, respectively, preserve one half and one quarter of the supersymmetry. For a sample of 5d SCFTs, including the $T_N$ theories, we provide explicit solutions for conformal and non-conformal defects. For the conformal defects we obtain their contribution t…
We explore the $\mathbb{Z}_{2,3,4,6}$ S-foldings of some 5d superconformal field theories from the $(p,q)$ 5-brane web perspective. The S-folding involves both a spatial quotient and an $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ transformation on 5-branes simultaneously. The $\mathbb{Z}_{2,3,4,6}$ S-foldings are achieved by the insertion of the $D_4, E_6, E_7, E_8$ 7-branes, respectively. The deficit angles and monodromies of these 7-branes are exactly those necessary for the S-foldings. We explore the details of the S-folding process, especially the enhancement of global flavor symmetry in various simple ca…
We consider the defect theory obtained by intersecting D3- and D5-branes along two common spatial directions. We work in the approximation in which the D5-brane is a probe in the AdS_5xS^5 background. By adding worldvolume flux to the D5-brane and choosing an appropriate embedding of the probe in AdS_5xS^5, one gets a supersymmetric configuration in which some of the D3-branes recombine with the D5-brane. We check this fact by showing that the D5-brane can be regarded as a system of polarized D3-branes. On the field theory side this corresponds to the Higgs branch of the defect theory, where s…
M-theory is known to possess supersymmetric solutions where the geometry is $\mathrm{AdS}_3\times S^3\times S^3$ warped over a Riemann surface $Σ_{2}$. The simplest examples in this class can be engineered by placing M2 and M5 branes as defects inside of a stack of background M5 branes. In this paper we show that a generalization of this construction yields more general solutions in the aforementioned class. The background branes are now M5's carrying M2 brane charge, while the defect branes are now placed at the origin of a flat hyperplane with a conical defect. The equations of motion imply …
We study the defect AdS/CFT correspondence for a system of N_c D3-branes intersecting certain configurations of D7-branes and O7-planes in 1+1-dimensions. The intersection is chiral, preserving N=(0,8) supersymmetry. The geometry produced by the 7-branes does not decouple in the low energy limit on the D3-branes; consequently the field theory must be considered in the curved background of the 7-branes, and the supergravity background is the fully backreacted solution accounting for both sets of branes. Although we can not work in the probe-brane limit, we still find a consistent defect mode-op…
We study the gravitational description of conformal half-BPS domain wall operators in N=4 SYM, which are described by defect CFT's. These defect CFT's arise in the low energy limit of a Hanany-Witten like brane setup and are described in a probe brane approximation by a Karch-Randall brane configuration. The gravitational backreaction takes the five-branes in AdS_5xS^5 through a geometric transition and turns them into appropriate fluxes which are supported on non-trivial three-spheres.
It has recently been realized that brane-antibrane annihilation (a possible explanation for ending inflation) may result in defect formation, due to the dynamics of the tachyon field. Studies of this possibility have generally ignored the interaction of the brane fields with fields in the bulk; recently it has been argued [1] that interactions with bulk fields suppress or even eliminate defect formation. To investigate the impact of bulk fields on brane defect formation, we construct a toy model that captures the essential features of the tachyon condensation with bulk fields. We study the str…
We consider a complex scalar field in (p+3)-dimensional bulk with a negative cosmological constant and study global vortices in two extra-dimensions. We reexamine carefully the coupled scalar and Einstein equations, and show that the boundary value of scalar amplitude at infinity of the extra-dimensions should be smaller than vacuum expectation value. The brane world has a cigar-like geometry with an exponentially decaying warp factor and a flat thick p-brane is embedded. Since a coordinate transformation identifies the obtained brane world as a black p-brane world bounded by a horizon, this s…
We formulate and study a class of massive N=2 supersymmetric gauge field theories coupled to boundary degrees of freedom on the strip. For some values of the parameters, the infrared limits of these theories can be interpreted as open string sigma models describing D-branes in large-radius Calabi-Yau compactifications. For other values of the parameters, these theories flow to CFTs describing branes in more exotic, non-geometric phases of the Calabi-Yau moduli space such as the Landau-Ginzburg orbifold phase. Some simple properties of the branes (like large radius monodromies and spectra of wo…
We study 6d E-string theory with defects on a circle. Our basic strategy is to apply the geometric transition to the supersymmetric gauge theories. First, we calculate the partition functions of the 5d SU(3)$_0$ gauge theory with 10 flavors, which is UV-dual to the 5d Sp(2) gauge theory with 10 flavors, based on two different 5-brane web diagrams, and check that two partition functions agree with each other. Then, by utilizing the geometric transition, we find the surface defect partition function for E-string on $\mathbb{R}^4\times T^2$. We also discuss that our result is consistent with the …
Localization and mass spectrum of bosonic and fermionic matter fields of some novel families of asymmetric thick brane configurations generated by deformed defects are investigated. The localization profiles of spin 0, spin 1/2 and spin 1 bulk fields are identified for novel matter field potentials supported by thick branes with internal structures. The condition for localization is constrained by the brane thickness of each model such that thickest branes strongly induces matter localization. The bulk mass terms for both fermion and boson fields are included in the global action as to produce…
We investigate an AdS_4 x L_2 D5-brane in AdS_5 x X_5 space-time, in the context of AdS/dCFT correspondence. Here, X_5 is a Sasaki-Einstein manifold and L_2 is a submanifold of X_5. This brane has the same supersymmetry as the 3-dimensional N=1 superconformal symmetry if L_2 is a special Legendrian submanifold in X_5. In this case, this brane is supposed to correspond to a superconformal wall defect in 4-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We construct these new string backgrounds and show they have the correct supersymmetry, also in the case with non-trivial gauge flux on L_2. The simple…
We construct a new family of $\text{AdS}_2\times S^2\times S^2$ solutions to Type IIA supergravity with 4 supercharges acting with non-Abelian T-duality on the recent class constructed in arXiv:2107.12277. We focus on a particular solution in this class asymptoting locally to an $\text{AdS}_5$ Gaiotto-Maldacena geometry. This solution allows for a line defect interpretation within the 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT dual to this geometry, that we study in detail. We show that the defect branes, consisting on a non-trivial intersection of D2-D4-NS5-F1 branes, can be interpreted as baryon vertices withi…
We consider Hanany-Witten setups of 3- and 5-branes in type IIB string theory that realize N=(1,0),(2,0) and (1,1) gauged WZW models in 1+1 dimensions. The gauged WZW models arise as theories residing on the boundary of D3 branes ending on D5 branes. From the point of view of low energy dynamics the D5 branes play the role of half-BPS co-dimension-1 defects (domain walls) in 3d N=1 or N=2 Chern-Simons theories. Extending the analysis of previous works on the subject of boundary conditions in (supersymmetric) Chern-Simons theory, we discuss in detail the field theory construction of a large cla…
We compute the dilatation operator for local "open string" operators situated at the interface of a certain supersymmetric defect version of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. This field theory is dual to a probe D5-brane intersecting a stack of D3-branes where the number of D3-branes can change between the two sides the interface. DeWolfe and Mann obtained the dilation operator in the special case of an equal number of D3-branes. Using a combination explicit field theory calculations and integrability considerations we are able to extend this result to the general case.
We construct new families of $\text{AdS}_2 \times S^2 \times S^2$ solutions with 4 supercharges in Type II supergravities. We show that subclasses of these solutions can be interpreted in terms of defect branes embedded in 4d $\mathcal{N} = 4 $ SYM, or orbifolds thereof. This is explicitly realised by showing that the solutions asymptote locally to $\text{AdS}_5 \times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_n$, in Type IIB, or its T-dual background, in Type IIA. The latter is a Gaiotto-Maldacena geometry realised on an intersection of D4 and NS5 branes. We extend the Type IIA solutions to include D6 branes, and inter…
Surface operators in the 6d (2,0) theory at large $N$ have a holographic description in terms of M2 branes probing the AdS$_7 \times S^4$ M-theory background. The most symmetric, 1/2-BPS, operator is defined over a planar or spherical surface, and it preserves a 2d superconformal group. This includes, in particular, an $SO(2,2)$ subgroup of 2d conformal transformations, so that the surface operator may be viewed as a conformal defect in the 6d theory. The dual M2 brane has an AdS$_3$ induced geometry, reflecting the 2d conformal symmetry. Here we use the holographic description to extract the …
Starting from an already known solution in the literature, we study the dynamical cobordism induced by the backreaction of a non-supersymmetric, positive tension domain wall in string theory. This could e.g. be a non-BPS D8-brane of type I or a $\overline{D8}/O8$ stack of a non-supersymmetric type IIA orientifold. The singularities which typically appear indicate either an inherent inconsistency of this background or the required presence of a suitable defect, as predicted by the cobordism conjecture. We provide evidence that this end-of-the-world $7$-brane is explicitly described by a new kin…
We study two-dimensional ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model (GLSM). Its low energy effective theory is a nonlinear sigma model whose target space gives rise to a configuration of five-branes in string theory. In this article we focus on sigma models for NS5-branes, KK5-branes and an exotic $5^2_2$-brane. In particular, we carefully analyze the GLSM for an exotic $5^2_2$-brane whose background configuration is multi-valued. The exotic $5^2_2$-brane is a concrete example of nongeometric configuration in string theory. We find that the exotic feature originates from the string winding coo…
We show that the Gukov-Witten monodromy defects of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory can be realized in perturbative string theory by considering an orbifold background of the Kanno-Tachikawa type and placing stacks of fractional D3-branes whose world-volume partially extends along the orbifold directions. In particular, we show that turning on a constant background value for some scalar fields in the closed string twisted sectors induces a non-trivial profile for the gauge field and one of the complex scalars of the world-volume theory, and that this profile exactly matches the singular behavi…
In the twisted M-theory setting, various types of fusion of M2 and M5 branes induce coproducts between the algebra of operators on M2 branes and the algebra of operators on M5 branes. By doing a perturbative computation in the gravity side, which is captured by the 5d topological holomorphic $U(1)$ Chern-Simons theory, we reproduce the non-perturbative coproducts.
We study supersymmetric branes in AdS_7 x S^4 and AdS_4 x S^7. We show that in the former case the membranes should be viewed as M5 branes with fluxes and we identify two types of such fivebranes (they are analogous to giant gravitons and to dual giants). In AdS_4 x S^7 we find both M5 branes with fluxes and freestanding stacks of membranes. We also go beyond probe approximation and construct regular supergravity solutions describing geometries produced by the branes. The metrics are completely specified by one function which satisfies either Laplace or Toda equation and we give a complete cla…
We present a non-supersymmetric deformation of probe branes describing conformal defects of codimension two in AdS/CFT. The worldvolume of the probe branes is deformed from $AdS_{p}\times S^1$ embedded in an $AdS_{p+2} \times \mathcal M^{D-p-2}$ background to an embedding of Janus form, which uses an $AdS_{p-1}$ slicing of $AdS_p$ and in which the brane bends along the slicing coordinate. In field theory terms this realizes conformal interfaces on codimension-two defects. We discuss these "Janus on the brane" solutions for $AdS_3\times S^1$ D3-branes in the $AdS_5\times S^5$ solution of Type I…
We compute the holographic entanglement entropy contribution from planar two-dimensional defects in six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ superconformal field theory, holographically dual to probe M2- and M5-branes in $AdS_7 \times S^4$. In particular, we test the viability of the universal contribution of the defect to entanglement entropy as a candidate $C$-function. We find that this coefficient is not monotonic under defect renormalization group flows triggered by the vacuum expectation value of a marginal operator. Another candidate $C$-function, the on-shell action inside the entanglement …
We study intersecting brane systems that realize a class of singular monopole configurations in four-dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. Singular monopoles are solutions to the Bogomolny equation on R^3 with a prescribed number of singularities corresponding to the insertion of 't Hooft defects. We use the brane construction to motivate a recent conjecture on the conditions for which the moduli space of solutions is non-empty. We also show how branes provide physical intuition for various aspects of the dimension formula derived in {arXiv:1404.5616}, including the contribution to the dimensio…
We study various aspects of the defect conformal field theory that arises when placing a single M5-brane probe in AdS_4 x S^7. We derive the full set of fluctuation modes and dimensions of the corresponding dual operators. We argue that the latter does not depend on the presence of a non-trivial magnetic flux on the M5-brane world-volume. Finally we give a mass to the hypermultiplet living on the defect, and compute the resulting mesonic spectrum.
