We study the defect AdS/CFT correspondence for a system of N_c D3-branes intersecting certain configurations of D7-branes and O7-planes in 1+1-dimensions. The intersection is chiral, preserving N=(0,8) supersymmetry. The geometry produced by the 7-branes does not decouple in the low energy limit on the D3-branes; consequently the field theory must be considered in the curved background of the 7-branes, and the supergravity background is the fully backreacted solution accounting for both sets of branes. Although we can not work in the probe-brane limit, we still find a consistent defect mode-operator map. In our previous study of the field theory we found chiral D3-brane zero-modes that localized to the intersection. Here we obtain a dual supergravity description of the localized R-symmetry anomaly that these zero-modes produce.
Topological defects have long been known to encode symmetries and dualities between physical systems. In the context of string theory, defects have been intensively studied at the level of the worldsheet. Although marked by a number of pioneering milestones, the target space picture of defects is much less understood. In this paper, we show, at the level of the target space, that Poisson-Lie T-duality can be encoded as a topological defect. With this result at hand, we can postulate the kernel capturing the Fourier-Mukai transform associated to the action of Poisson-Lie T-duality on the RR-sec…
We propose a Seiberg duality for a 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $Spin(7)$ gauge theory with $F$ spinor matters. For $F \ge 6$, the theory allows a magnetic dual description with an $SU(F-4)$ gauge group. The matter content on the magnetic side is ``chiral'' and the duality connects ``chiral'' and ``non-chiral'' 3d gauge theories. As a corollary, we can construct a Seiberg duality for a 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $G_2$ gauge theory with fundamental matters.
We study the topologically twisted compactification of the 6d $(2,0)$ M5-brane theory on an elliptically fibered Kähler three-fold preserving two supercharges. We show that upon reducing on the elliptic fiber, the 4d theory is $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang Mills, with varying complexified coupling $τ$, in the presence of defects. For abelian gauge group this agrees with the so-called duality twisted theory, and we determine a non-abelian generalization to $U(N)$. When the elliptic fibration is singular, the 4d theory contains 3d walls (along the branch-cuts of $τ$) and 2d surface defects, around …
We propose an explicit description of duality walls which encode at low energy the global symmetry enhancement expected in the UV completion of certain five-dimensional gauge theories. The proposal is supported by explicit localization computations and implies that the instanton partition function of these theories satisfies novel and unexpected integral equations.
We study the interplay of duality and confinement in certain three-dimensional models induced by the condensation of topological defects. To this end we check for the confinement phenomenon, in both sides of the duality, using the static quantum potential within the framework of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. Our calculations show that the interaction energy contains a linear term leading to the confinement of static probe charges.
We demonstrate that the technique of abelian bosonization through duality transformations can be extended to gauging anomalous symmetries. The example of a Dirac fermion theory is first illustrated. This idea is then also applied to bosonize a chiral fermion by gauging its chiral phase symmetry.
The self-duality of chiral p-forms was originally investigated by Pasti, Sorokin and Tonin in a manifestly Lorentz covariant action with non-polynomial auxiliary fields. The investigation was then extended to other chiral p-form actions. In this paper we point out that the self-duality appears in a wider context of theoretical models that relate to chiral p-forms. We demonstrate this by considering the interacting model of Floreanini-Jackiw chiral bosons and gauge fields, the generalized chiral Schwinger model (GCSM) and the latter's gauge invariant formulation, and discover that the self-dual…
The equations of motion for a conformal field theory in the presence of defect lines can be derived from an action that includes contributions from bibranes. For T-dual toroidal compactifications, they imply a direct relation between Poincare line bundles and the action of T-duality on boundary conditions. We also exhibit a class of diagonal defects that induce a shift of the B-field. We finally study T-dualities for S^1-fibrations in the example of the Wess-Zumino-Witten model on SU(2) and lens spaces. Using standard techniques from D-branes, we derive from algebraic data in rational conforma…
We propose a "chiral" version of the Kutasov-Schwimmer duality in a 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(N)$ gauge theory with $F$ fundamental matters, $\bar{F}$ anti-fundamental matters and an adjoint matter $X$ with a tree-level superpotential $W= \mathrm{tr} \, X^{k+1}$. The theory exhibits a rich structure of the baryonic and (dressed) Coulomb branch operators. At first sight, the duality seems bad due to the mismatch of the anti-baryonic branch in the moduli space of vacua. The duality well works by realizing that the anti-baryonic operators are identified with some of the dressed Coulomb branch coordi…
The duality symmetries of various chiral boson actions are investigated using D=2 and D=6 space-time dimensions as examples. These actions involve the Siegel, Floreanini-Jackiw, Srivastava and Pasti-Sorokin-Tonin formulations. We discover that the Siegel, Floreanini-Jackiw and Pasti-Sorokin-Tonin actions have self-duality with respect to a common anti-dualization of chiral boson fields in D=2 and D=6 dimensions, respectively, while the Srivastava action is self-dual with respect to a generalized dualization of chiral boson fields. Moreover, the action of the Floreanini-Jackiw chiral bosons int…
We establish the consistency of duality transformations for generic systems of $N=2$ vector supermultiplets in the presence of a chiral background field. This is relevant, for instance, when dealing with spurion fields or when considering higher-derivative couplings of vector multiplets to supergravity. We point out that under duality most quantities do not transform as functions. With few exceptions, true functions are nonholomorphic, even though the duality transformations themselves are holomorphic in nature.
We present evidence for renormalization group fixed points with dual magnetic descriptions in fourteen new classes of four-dimensional $N=1$ supersymmetric models. Nine of these classes are chiral and many involve two or three gauge groups. These theories are generalizations of models presented earlier by Seiberg, by Kutasov and Schwimmer, and by the present authors. The different classes are interrelated; one can flow from one class to another using confinement or symmetry breaking.
Four-dimensional N = 2 superconformal quantum field theories contain a subsector carrying the structure of a chiral algebra. Using localization techniques, we show for the free hypermultiplet that this structure can be accessed directly from the path integral on the four-sphere. We extend the localization computation to include supersymmetric surface defects described by a generic 4d/2d coupled system. The presence of a defect corresponds to considering a module of the chiral algebra: our results provide a calculational window into its structure constants.
$AdS_3$ string theory in the stringy regime $k=(R_{AdS}/\ell_{str})^2 < 1$ provides a laboratory for the study of holography in which both sides of AdS/CFT duality are under fairly good control. Worldsheet string theory is solvable, and for closed strings the dual spacetime CFT is a deformation of a symmetric product orbifold. Here we extend this construction to include open strings by adding a probe D-string, described semi-classically by an $AdS_2$ D-brane in $AdS_3$. The dual defect or boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) is again a deformed symmetric product, which now describes the Fock…
We study electric-magnetic duality in the chiral ring of a supersymmetric U(N_c) gauge theory with adjoint and fundamental matter, in presence of a general confining phase superpotential for the adjoint and the mesons. We find the magnetic solution corresponding to both the pseudoconfining and higgs electric vacua. By means of the Dijkgraaf-Vafa method, we match the effective glueball superpotentials and show that in some cases duality works exactly offshell. We give also a picture of the analytic structure of the resolvents in the magnetic theory, as we smoothly interpolate between different …
We use Lorentzian signature AdS/CFT duality to study a first order phase transition in strongly coupled gauge theories which is akin to the chiral phase transition in QCD. We discuss the relation between the latent heat and the energy (suitably defined) of the component of a D-brane which lies behind the horizon at the critical temperature. A numerical simulation of a dynamical phase transition in an expanding, cooling Quark-Gluon plasma produced in a relativistic collision is carried out.
We evaluate the vacuum polarization tensor (VPT) for a massless Dirac field in 1+1 and 3+1 dimensions, in the presence of a particular kind of defect, which in a special limit imposes bag boundary conditions. We also show that the chiral anomaly in the presence of such a defect is the same as when no defects are present, both in 1+1 and 3+1 dimensions. This implies that the induced vacuum current in 1+1 dimensions due to the lowest order VPT is exact.
We consider Hanany-Witten setups of 3- and 5-branes in type IIB string theory that realize N=(1,0),(2,0) and (1,1) gauged WZW models in 1+1 dimensions. The gauged WZW models arise as theories residing on the boundary of D3 branes ending on D5 branes. From the point of view of low energy dynamics the D5 branes play the role of half-BPS co-dimension-1 defects (domain walls) in 3d N=1 or N=2 Chern-Simons theories. Extending the analysis of previous works on the subject of boundary conditions in (supersymmetric) Chern-Simons theory, we discuss in detail the field theory construction of a large cla…
We study N = 2* theories with gauge group U(N) and use equivariant localization to calculate the quantum expectation values of the simplest chiral ring elements. These are expressed as an expansion in the mass of the adjoint hypermultiplet, with coefficients given by quasi-modular forms of the S-duality group. Under the action of this group, we construct combinations of chiral ring elements that transform as modular forms of definite weight. As an independent check, we confirm these results by comparing the spectral curves of the associated Hitchin system and the elliptic Calogero-Moser system…
We study low-energy dynamics of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(N)$ "chiral" gauge theories with $F$ fundamental and $\bar{F}$ anti-fundamental matters without a Chern-Simons term. Compared to a naive semi-classical analysis of the Coulomb branch, its quantum structure is highly richer than expected due to so-called "dressed" Coulomb branch (monopole) operators. We propose dualities and confinement phases for the "chiral" $SU(N)$ theories. The theories with $N>F > \bar{F}$ exhibit spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The very many Coulomb branch operators generally remain exactly massless…
We consider a version of the Gross-Neveu model in 1+1 dimensions with discrete chiral and continuous flavor symmetry (isospin). In 2+1 dimensions, this model is known as chiral Heisenberg Gross-Neveu model. Spontaneous symmetry breaking and the emergence of two massless and one massive scalar bosons are shown. A duality to the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with isospin is exhibited, provided that the isovector pseudoscalar mean field is constrained to a plane in isospin space. This enables us to find the phase diagram as a function of temperature, chemical potential and isospin chemical potential …
Two different families of abelian chiral gauge theories on the torus are investigated: the aim is to test the consistency of two-dimensional anomalous gauge theories in the presence of global degrees of freedom for the gauge field. An explicit computation of the partition functions shows that unitarity is recovered in particular regions of parameter space and that the effective dynamics is described in terms of fermionic interacting models. For the first family, this connection with fermionic models uncovers an exact duality which is conjectured to hold in the nonabelian case as well.
We develop the duality transformation rules in two-dimensional theories in the superfield formalism. Even if the chiral superfield which we dualize involves an F-term, we can dualize it by virtue of the property of chiral superfields. We apply the duality transformation rule of the neutral chiral superfield to the ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model for five-branes. We also investigate the duality transformation rule of the charged chiral superfield in the ${\cal N} = (4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model for the $A_1$-type ALE space. In both cases we obtain the dual Lagrangians in the super…
We propose a new chiral model of metastable supersymmetry breaking in the conformal window via chiral/nonchiral Seiberg duality, which is focused on Spin(7)/SU(N_f-4) duality in this letter. Following the approach of Intriligator-Seiberg-Shih model, a small mass perturbation in the nonchiral theory leads to supersymmetry breaking by rank condition in the chiral dual description.
We establish a map between AdS$_3 \times$S$^2$ and AdS$_7$ solutions to massive IIA supergravity that allows one to interpret the former as holographic duals to D2-D4 defects inside 6d (1,0) CFTs. This relation singles out in a particular manner the AdS$_3\times$S$^2$ solution constructed from AdS$_3\times$S$^3\times $CY$_2$ through non-Abelian T-duality, with respect to a freely acting SU(2). We find explicit global completions to this solution and provide well-defined (0,4) 2d dual CFTs associated to them. These completions consist of linear quivers with colour groups coming from D2 and D6 b…
A sigma model with four-dimensional target space parametrized by chiral and twisted chiral N=(2,2) superfields can be extended to N=(4,4) supersymmetry off-shell, but this is not true for a model of semichiral fields, where the N=(4,4) supersymmetry can only be realized on-shell. The two models can be related to each other by T-duality. In this paper we perform a duality transformation from a chiral and twisted chiral model with off-shell N=(4,4) supersymmetry to a semichiral model. We find that additional non-linear terms must be added to the original transformations to obtain a semichiral mo…
We demonstrate that the fusion algebra of conformal defects of a two-dimensional conformal field theory contains information about the internal symmetries of the theory and allows one to read off generalisations of Kramers-Wannier duality. We illustrate the general mechanism in the examples of the Ising model and the three-states Potts model.
We study the construction of generalized Kahler manifolds, described purely in terms of N=(2,2) semichiral superfields, by a quotient using the semichiral vector multiplet. Despite the presence of a b-field in these models, we show that the quotient of a hyperkahler manifold is hyperkahler, as in the usual hyperkahler quotient. Thus, quotient manifolds with torsion cannot be constructed by this method. Nonetheless, this method does give a new description of hyperkahler manifolds in terms of two-dimensional N=(2,2) gauged non-linear sigma models involving semichiral superfields and the semichir…
We discuss $SU(N_c)$ gauge theory coupled to two adjoint chiral superfields $X$ and $Y$, and a number of fundamental chiral superfields $Q^i$. We add a superpotential that has the form of Arnold's $D$ series $W = \Tr X^{k+1} + \Tr XY^2$. We present a dual description in terms of an $SU(3kN_f - N_c)$ gauge theory, and we show that the duality passes many tests. At the end of the paper, we show how a deformation of this superpotential flows to another duality having a product gauge group $SU(N_c)\times SU(N_c')$, with an adjoint field charged under $SU(N_c)$, an adjoint field charged under $SU(N…
We discuss duality between the linear and chiral dilaton formulations, in the presence of super-Yang-Mills instanton corrections to the effective action. In contrast to previous work on the subject, our approach appeals directly to explicit instanton calculations and does not rely on the introduction of an auxiliary Veneziano-Yankielowicz superfield. We discuss duality in the case of an axion that has a periodic scalar potential, and find that the bosonic fields of the dual linear multiplet have a modified interpretation. We note that symmetries of the axion potential manifest themselves as sy…
We study supersymmetric $SU(N-4)$ gauge theories with a symmetric tensor and $N$ antifundamental representations. The theory with $W=0$ has a dual description in terms of a non-chiral $Spin(8)$ theory with one spinor and $N$ vectors. This duality flows to the $SO(N)$ duality of Seiberg and to a duality proposed by one of us. It also flows to dualities for a number of $Spin(m)$ theories, $m\le 8$. For $N=6$, when an ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY superpotential is added, the singularities of Seiberg and Witten are recovered. For $N\le 6$, a mass for the spinor generates the branches of $SO(8)$ theories foun…
We propose a unified approach to a general class of codimension-2 defects in field theories with non-trivial duality symmetries and discuss various constructions of such "duality defects" in diverse dimensions. In particular, in d=4 we propose a new interpretation of the Seiberg-Witten u-plane by "embedding" it in the physical space-time: we argue that it describes a BPS configuration of two duality defects (at the monopole/dyon points) and propose its vast generalization based on Lefschetz fibrations of 4-manifolds.
We introduce a class of non-invertible topological defects in (3+1)d gauge theories whose fusion rules are the higher-dimensional analogs of those of the Kramers-Wannier defect in the (1+1)d critical Ising model. As in the lower-dimensional case, the presence of such non-invertible defects implies self-duality under a particular gauging of their discrete (higher-form) symmetries. Examples of theories with such a defect include SO(3) Yang-Mills (YM) at $θ= π$, $\mathcal{N}=1$ SO(3) super YM, and $\mathcal{N}=4$ SU(2) super YM at $τ= i$. We also introduce an analogous construction in (2+1)d, and…
We investigate a five-branes interpretation of hyper-Kähler geometry with torsion (HKT). This geometry is obtained by conformal transformation of the Taub-NUT space which represents a Kaluza-Klein five-brane. This HKT would represent an NS5-brane on the Taub-NUT space. In order to explore the HKT further, we compactify one transverse direction, and study the $O(2,2;{\mathbb Z}) = SL(2,{\mathbb Z}) \times SL(2,{\mathbb Z})$ monodromy structure associated with two-torus. Performing the conjugate transformation, we obtain a new solution whose physical interpretation is a defect $(p,q)$ five-brane…
Using a six-orientifold on top of a NS-fivebrane we construct a chiral N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory in four dimensions with gauge group SU(N_c) and matter in the symmetric, antisymmetric and (anti)fundamental representations. Anomaly cancellation is fulfilled by the requirement of a smooth RR 7-form charge distribution and leads us to the introduction of 8 half D-sixbranes ending on the NS-fivebrane. We obtain the dual model from branes by a linking number argument. We check explicitly the 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions and the map between deformations in the original and the dual mod…
In this paper we have analyzed the $κ$-deformed Minkowski spacetime through the light of the interference phenomena in QFT where two opposite chiral fields are put together in the same multiplet and its consequences are discussed. The chiral models analyzed here are the chiral Schwinger model, its generalized version and its gauge invariant version, where a Wess-Zumino term were added. We will see that the final actions obtained here are in fact related to the original ones via duality transformations.
We extend the duality between massive and topologically massive antisymmetric tensor gauge theories in arbitrary space-time dimensions to include topological defects. We show explicitly that the condensation of these defects leads, in 4 dimensions, to confinement of electric strings in the two dual models. The dual phase, in which magnetic strings are confined is absent. The presence of the confinement phase explicitly found in the 4-dimensional case, is generalized, using duality arguments, to arbitrary space-time dimensions.
It has been proposed that gauge and Kaehler anomalies in four-dimensional type IIB orientifolds are cancelled by a generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism involving exchange of twisted RR-fields. We explain how this can be understood using the well-known duality between linear and chiral multiplets. We find that all the twisted fields associated to the N=1 sectors and some of the fields associated to the N=2 sectors reside in linear multiplets. But there are no linear multiplets associated to order-two twists. Only the linear multiplets contribute to anomaly cancellation. This suffices to cancel a…
We study duality transformations for two-dimensional sigma models with abelian chiral isometries and prove that generic such transformations are equivalent to integrated marginal perturbations by bilinears in the chiral currents, thus confirming a recent conjecture by Hassan and Sen formulated in the context of Wess-Zumino-Witten models. Specific duality transformations instead give rise to coset models plus free bosons.
We consider four-dimensional N=1 field theories realized by type IIA brane configurations of NS-branes and D4-branes, in the presence of orientifold six-planes and D6-branes. These configurations are known to present interesting effects associated to the appearance of chiral symmetries and chiral matter in the four-dimensional field theory. We center on models with one compact direction (elliptic models) and show that, under T-duality, the configurations are mapped to a set of type IIB D3-branes probing N=1 orientifolds of C^2/Z_N singularities. We explicitly construct these orientifolds, and …
We study a deformation of N=2 supersymmetric QCD with U(N) gauge group and N_f quark flavors induced by the mass term μfor the adjoint matter which breaks supersymmetry down to N=1 QCD. Recently this deformation was shown to lead to a weakly coupled dual theory only in two particular sets of vacua: the r=N vacuum and the so-called zero vacua which can be found at r< N_f-N, where r is the number of condensed quarks. For small quark masses and intermediate values of μthe gauge group of the dual theory is U(N_f-N)\times U(1)^{2N-N_f} where the Abelian sector is heavy and can be integrated out. Ho…
Using examples of a D=2 chiral scalar and a duality-symmetric formulation of D=4 Maxwell theory we study duality properties of actions for describing chiral bosons. In particular, in the D=4 case, upon performing a duality transform of an auxiliary scalar field, which ensures Lorentz covariance of the action, we arrive at a new covariant duality-symmetric Maxwell action, which contains a two-form potential as an auxiliary field. When the two-form field is gauge fixed this action reduces to a duality-symmetric action for Maxwell theory constructed by Zwanziger. We consider properties of this ne…
We study the two-dimensional chiral algebra associated with the simplest Argyres-Douglas type theory with an exactly marginal coupling, i.e., the $(A_3,A_3)$ theory. Near a cusp in the space of the exactly marginal deformations (i.e., the conformal manifold), the theory is well-described by the $SU(2)$ gauge theory coupled to isolated Argyres-Douglas theories and a fundamental hypermultiplet. In this sense, the $(A_3,A_3)$ theory is an Argyres-Douglas version of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(2)$ conformal QCD. By studying its Higgs branch and Schur index, we identify the minimal possible set of chir…
We study recently proposed chiral higher spin theories - cubic theories of interacting massless higher spin fields in four-dimensional flat space. We show that they are naturally associated with gauge algebras, which manifest themselves in several related ways. Firstly, the chiral higher spin equations of motion can be reformulated as the self-dual Yang-Mills equations with the associated gauge algebras instead of the usual colour gauge algebra. We also demonstrate that the chiral higher spin field equations, similarly to the self-dual Yang-Mills equations, feature an infinite algebra of hidde…
A way of covariantizing duality symmetric actions is proposed. As examples considered are a manifestly space-time invariant duality--symmetric action for abelian gauge fields coupled to axion-dilaton fields and gravity in D=4, and a Lorentz-invariant action for chiral bosons in D=2. The latter is shown to admit a manifestly supersymmetric generalization for describing chiral superfields in n=(1,0) D=2 superspace.
