We revisit $A_4$ flavor symmetry for the lepton sector with minimal Higgs sector, namely just one $A_4-$triplet SU(2)-doublet scalar. To increase predictivity even further, we impose the constraint of renormalizability. A geometric interpretation of an $A_4-$triplet aids our understanding of tribimaximal mixing. To increase predictivity even further, we impose the constraint of renormalizability. We investigate the neutrino mass hierarchy in such a minimal $A_4$ model and find there are two solutions: one with $m_2 \gg m_1 = m_3$ is phenomenologically unacceptable; the other with $m_3 \gg m_1 = m_2$ is a normal hierarchy. An inverted hierarchy is impossible without addition of more parameters by either more Higgs scalars or higher-order irrelevant operators.
We develop a self-consistent $Spin(4,4)$-invariant model of the unification of gravity with weak $SU(2)$ gauge and Higgs fields in the visible and invisible sectors of our Universe. We consider a general case of the graviweak unification, including the higher-derivative super-renormalizable theory of gravity, which is a unitary, asymptotically-free and perturbatively consistent theory of the quantum gravity.
In this work we propose the Z -> gamma gamma decay as a process strictly forbidden in the standard model, suitable for the search of noncommutativity of coordinates at very short distances. We computed the Z -> gamma gamma partial width in the framework of the recently proposed one-loop renormalizable gauge sector of the noncommutative standard model. New experimental possibilities at LHC are analyzed and a firm bound to the scale of noncommutativity parameter is set around 1 TeV.
We find an explicit renormalizable supersymmetric $E_6$ model with all the ingredients for being realistic. It consists of the Higgs sector $351'+\overline{351'}+27+\overline{27}$, which breaks $E_6$ directly to the Standard Model gauge group. Three copies of $27$ dimensional representations then describe the matter sector, while an extra $27+\overline{27}$ pair is needed to successfully split the Standard Model Higgs doublet from the heavy Higgs triplet. We perform the analysis of the vacuum structure and the Yukawa sector of this model, as well as compute contributions to proton decay. Also,…
The lepton sector is studied within a flavored non-renormalizable model where the $\mathbf{S}_{3}\otimes \mathbf{Z}_{2}$ flavor symmetry drives the Yukawa couplings. In this framework, the effective neutrino mass, that comes from the type II see-saw mechanism, as well as the charged lepton mass matrices are hierarchical and possessed (under a benchmark in the charged sector) a kind of Fritzsch textures that achieve to accommodate the mixing angles in good agreement with the last experimental data. The model predicts a CP-violating phase consistent with the experimental data and the branching r…
We develop a resonance chiral theory without any a priori limitation on the number of derivatives in the hadronic operators. Through an exhaustive analysis of the resonance lagrangian and by means of field redefinitions, we find that the number of independent operator contributing to the S -> pi pi decay amplitude is finite: there is only one single-trace operator (the cd term) and three multi-trace terms. The deep implication of this fact is that the ultraviolet divergences that appear in this amplitude at the loop level can only appear through these chiral invariant structures. Hence, a reno…
A renormalizable model of electroweak interaction which coincides with Weinberg-Salam model in the gauge boson - fermion sector but does not require the existence of fundamental scalar fields is proposed.
We study the Higgs potential of the next-to-minimal renormalizable SUSY SO(10) GUT with 120 Higgs representation on top of the "standard" minimal model Higgs sector spanning over 10, 126bar+126 and 210. All the GUT-scale Higgs sector mass matrices for the 592 Higgs states of the model are written down in detail with all the conventions fully specified. The consistency of the results is checked by the decoupling of 120 and independently by the analysis of the relevant Goldstone modes. The matching of the Yukawa sector sum-rules driving the matter fermion masses and mixing at the level of the ef…
A linear realization of a model of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking describing additional heavy vector bosons is proposed. The model is a SU(2)_L x U(1) x SU(2)_L' x SU(2)_R' gauge theory, breaking at some high scale u to SU(2)_weak x U(1)_Y and breaking again in the standard way at the electroweak scale v to U(1)_(em). The model is renormalizable and reproduces the Standard Model in the limit u\to infinity. This decoupling property is shown to hold also at the level of radiative corrections by computing, in particular, the epsilon parameters.
We propose the Z -> gamma gamma decay, a process strictly forbidden in the standard model, as a signal suitable for the search of noncommutativity of coordinates at very short distances. We compute the Z -> gamma gamma partial widthin the framework of the recently proposed renormalizable gauge sector of the noncommutative standard model. The one-loop renormalizability is obtained for the model containing the usual six representations of matter fields of the first generation. Even more, the noncommutative part is finite or free of divergences, showing that perhaps new interaction symmetry exist…
We present a renormalizable model for fermion masses based solely on the double tetrahedral group T'. It does not include right handed neutrinos and majorana neutrino masses are generated radiatively. The scalar sector of the model involves three SU(2) doublets and a set of lepton number violating (charged) scalars needed to give mass to the neutrinos. In the quark sector the model leads to a Fritzsch type scenario that is consistent with all the existing data. In the lepton sector, the model leads to tribimaximal (and near tribimaximal) mixing, and an inverted mass hierarchy.
We discuss the ordinary, non-supersymmetric SO(10) as a theory of fermion masses and mixings. We construct two minimal versions of the Yukawa sector based on $\bar{126}_H $ and either $10_H$ or $120_H$. The latter case is of particular interest since it connects the absolute neutrino mass scale with the size of the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_A$. It also relates the smallness of $V_{cb}$ with the largeness of $θ_A$. These results are based on the analytic study of the second and third generations. Furthermore, we discuss the structure of the light Higgs and the role of the Peccei-Quinn symmetr…
A simple extension of the minimal renormalizable supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified theory by adding a 120-dimensional Higgs representation is examined. This brings new antisymmetric contributions to the relevant quark and lepton mass sum rules and leads to a better fit of the measured values of lepton masses and mixings together with a natural completion of the renormalizable Higgs sector within the SUSY SO(10) framework.
The renormalizable coloron model is the minimal extension of the standard model color sector, in which the color gauge group is enlarged to SU(3)_{1c} x SU(3)_{2c}. In this paper we discuss the constraints on this model derived from the requirements of vacuum stability, tree-level unitarity, electroweak precision measurements, and from LHC measurements of the properties of the observed Higgs-like scalar boson. The combination of these theoretical and experimental considerations strongly constrains the allowed parameter space. (Erratum appended, March 2014.)
The apparent breakdown of unitarity in low order perturbation theory is often is used to place bounds on the parameters of a theory. In this work we give an algorithm for approximately computing the next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbativity bounds on the quartic couplings of a renormalizable theory whose scalar sector is $ϕ^4$-like. By this we mean theories where either there are no cubic scalar interactions, or the cubic couplings are related to the quartic couplings through spontaneous symmetry breaking. The quantity that tests where perturbation theory breaks down itself can be written as …
We investigate the possibility of constructing a renormalizable standard model with purely fermionic matter content. The Higgs scalar is replaced by point-like fermionic self-interactions with couplings growing large at the Fermi scale. An analysis of the UV behavior in the point-like approximation reveals a variety of non-Gaussian fixed points for the fermion couplings. If real, such fixed points would imply nonperturbative renormalizability and evade triviality of the Higgs sector. For point-like fermionic self-interactions and weak gauge couplings, one encounters a hierarchy problem similar…
The messenger sector of existing models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking may be simplified by using a non-renormalizable superpotential term to couple the vector-like quark and lepton messenger fields to a chiral gauge-invariant of the supersymmetry-breaking sector. This eliminates the need for a fundamental singlet and for an additional gauge sector needed to generate appropriate expectation values for the singlet component fields. This scenario is more natural if the supersymmetry-breaking sector itself involves a non-renormalizable superpotential. Several examples are constructed ba…
We propose a renormalizable supersymmetric SO(10) model where the doublet-triplet splitting problem is solved using the Dimopoulos-Wilczek mechanism. An unwanted coupling is forbidden through a filter sector. To suppress proton decay without spoiling gauge coupling unification, there is a problem in the weak doublets which requires further improvements.
We explore in detail the effective matter fermion mass sum-rules in a class of renormalizable SUSY SO(10) grand unified models where the quark and lepton mass and mixing patterns originate from non-decoupling effects of an extra vector matter multiplet living around the unification scale. If the renormalizable type-II contribution governed by the SU(2)_L-triplet in 54_H dominates the seesaw formula, we obtain an interesting correlation between the maximality of the atmospheric neutrino mixing and the proximity of y_s/y_b to V_cb in the quark sector.
We propose a simple gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking model in which suitable soft breaking masses are dynamically generated without relying on a messenger sector. This model is constructed as an extention of the 3-2 model and needs no fine-tuning of parameters. The dynamical supersymmetry breaking sector contains non-renormalizable interactions and vector-like fields. Non-renormalizable terms are characterized by the couplings of O(1) in units of the Planck scale. The vacuum of this model conserves the color and electro-weak symmetry.
We establish the existence of static, classically-stable, winding solitons in renormalizable three-dimensional gauge models, with topologically trivial target space and vacuum manifold. They are prototypes for possible analogous particle-like excitations in the higgs sector of the standard electroweak theory.
The weak dipole moments of elementary fermions are calculated at the one-loop level in the framework of a renormalizable scalar leptoquark model that forbids baryon number violating processes and so is free from the strong constraints from experimental data. In this model there are two scalar leptoquarks accommodated in an $SU_L(2)\times U_Y(1)$ doublet: one of such leptoquarks is non-chiral and has electric charge of $5/3e$, whereas the other one is chiral and has electric charge $2/3e$. In particular, a non-chiral leptoquark contributes to the weak properties of an up fermion via a chirality…
We study a renormalizable SUSY $SO(10)$ GUT model where the Yukawa couplings of single ${\bf 10}$, single ${\bf \overline{126}}$ and single ${\bf 120}$ fields, $Y_{10},Y_{126},Y_{120}$, account for the quark and lepton Yukawa couplings and the neutrino mass. We pursue the possibility that $Y_{10},Y_{126},Y_{120}$ reproduce the correct quark and lepton masses, CKM and PMNS matrices and neutrino mass differences, and at the same time suppress dimension-5 proton decays (proton decays via colored Higgsino exchange) through their texture, so that the soft SUSY breaking scale can be reduced as much …
We construct simple renormalizable extensions of the standard model where the leading baryon number violating processes have $ΔB = \pm ΔL = -2$. These models contain additional scalars. The simplest models contain a color singlet and a colored sextet. For such baryon number violation to be observed in experiments, the scalars cannot be much heavier than a few TeV. We find that such models are strongly constrained by LHC physics, LEP physics, and flavor physics.
We propose a low scale renormalizable left-right symmetric theory that successfully explains the observed SM fermion mass hierarchy, the tiny values for the light active neutrino masses and is consistent with the lepton and baryon asymmetries of the Universe, the muon and electron anomalous magnetic moments as well as the with the constraints arising from the meson oscillations. In the proposed model the top and exotic quarks obtain masses at tree level, whereas the masses of the bottom, charm and strange quarks, tau and muon leptons are generated from a tree level Universal Seesaw mechanism, …
The Higgs field mass term, being superrenomalizable, has a unique status within the standard model. Through the opening it affords, $SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1)$ singlet fields can have renormalizable couplings to standard model fields. We present examples that are neither grotesque nor unnatural. A possible consequence is to spread the Higgs particle resonance into several weaker ones, or to afford it additional, effectively invisible decay channels.
The right--handed neutrino mass matrix that is central to the understanding of small neutrino masses via the seesaw mechanism can arise either (i) from renormalizable operators or (ii) from nonrenormalizable or super-renormalizable operators, depending on the symmetries and the Higgs content of the theory beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we study lepton flavor violating (LFV) effects in the first class of seesaw models wherein the ν_R Majorana masses arise from renormalizable Yukawa couplings involving a B-L = 2 Higgs field. We present detailed predictions for τ-> μ+ γand μ-> e + γbra…
Together with any Beyond the Standard Model ultraviolet complete, renormalizable model, one or several exotic particles are usually hypothesized. $C\!P$-even neutral and doubly-charged scalars are common, well known examples which can contribute to the seven 3-body Charged Lepton Flavor Violating decays. The experimental bounds on each Branching Ratio within this set of processes provide a good test for new physics that can induce powerful constraints on relevant parameter spaces. This is specially true for a third species of particle which, unlike the previous two, is a rare feature of renorm…
Dark matter (DM) that interacts too weakly with the Standard Model (SM) to reach full thermodynamic equilibrium can be still be created in significant amounts by rare SM collisions. This mechanism, called freeze-in, can proceed through a renormalizable connector operator with a very small coefficient, or a non-renormalizable connector operator suppressed by a large mass scale. In the latter non-renormalizable scenario, the dominant creation of DM particles typically occurs at the largest SM temperature attained during the radiation era (assuming a standard cosmological history), and for this r…
We construct a class of renormalizable models for lepton mixing that generate predictions given in terms of the charged-lepton mass ratios. We show that one of those models leads, when one takes into account the known experimental values, to almost maximal CP-breaking phases and to almost maximal neutrinoless double-beta decay. We study in detail the scalar potential of the models, especially the bounds imposed by unitarity on the values of the quartic couplings.
We investigate dimension five Lorentz-violating nonminimal interactions in the electroweak sector, in connection with the possible generation of electric dipole moment (EDM), weak electric dipole moment (WEDM), magnetic dipole moment (MDM) and weak magnetic dipole moment (WMDM) for leptons. These couplings are composed of the physical fields and LV tensors of ranks ranging from 1 to 4. The CPT-odd couplings do no generate EDM\ behavior and do not provide the correct MDM\ signature, while the CPT-even ones yield EDM and MDM\ behavior, being subject to improved constraining. Tau lepton experimen…
We discuss SUSY models in which renormalizable lepton number violating couplings hide the decay of the Higgs through h -> χ_1^0 + χ_1^0 followed by χ_1^0 -> τ+ 2 jets or χ_1^0 -> ν_τ+ 2 jets and also explain neutrino masses. This mechanism can be made compatible with gauge mediated SUSY breaking.
Assuming that the leptonic mixing matrix is given in first approximation by the tribimaximal form we deduce some consequences with regard to the finite symmetries that may be applied in the minimal lepton sector of the electroweak theory.
We extend the notion of Minimal Flavor Violation to the lepton sector. We introduce a symmetry principle which allows us to express lepton flavor violation in the charged lepton sector in terms of neutrino masses and mixing angles. We explore the dependence of the rates for flavor changing radiative charged lepton decays (ell(i) -> ell(j) + gamma) and mu-to-e conversion in nuclei on the scales for total lepton number violation, lepton flavor violation and the neutrino masses and mixing angles. Measurable rates are obtained when the scale for total lepton number violation is much larger than th…
We give a pedagogical review of flavour and CP violation in the lepton sector, with a particular emphasis on new physics - and in particular supersymmetric - contributions to flavour and CP violating observables involving leptons.
In this review we discuss physics of the lepton sector, the anomalous dipole moment of muon, the charged lepton-flavor violation, and the electric dipole moments of charged leptons, from viewpoints of the minimal supersymmetric standard model and the extensions.
The tri-bimaximal mixing matrix is most likely the leading order term in the description of leptonic mixing. We derive deviations from tri-bimaximal mixing(TBM) due to corrections from the charged lepton sector. We assume a decoupled 2-3 symmetry, which is a $Z_2$ symmetry, in the charged lepton sector and another $Z_2$ symmetry in the neutrino sector. The TBM is obtained in the flavor symmetric limit. We consider deviations from the TBM form arising from the breaking of the 2-3 symmetry in the charged lepton sector but do not consider deviations from the breaking of the flavor symmetry in the…
A new representation of electroweak lepton sector is proposed. It consists of two Weyl spinors per one lepton family. It is shown that proposed representation is fully equivalent to the conventional left-handed iso-doublet. New type of plane wave solutions can be found under certain additional assumptions.
The recent results from T2K and MINOS experiments point towards a relatively large value of the reactor angle θ_13 in the lepton sector. In this paper we show how a large θ_13 can arise from the charged lepton sector alone in the context of an SU(5) GUT. In such a scenario (tri-)bimaximal mixing in the neutrino sector is still a viable possibility. We also analyse the general implications of the considered scenario for the searches of CP violation in neutrino oscillations.
These proceedings introduce the main techniques and ideas for a systematic effective field theory analysis of CP violation in the charged lepton sector. This study is required because the Standard Model of particle physics predicts a very high degree of CP violation suppression in the lepton sector, and this implies that possible new physics effects can be parameterised in terms of new interactions among the Standard Model fields, in the framework of the so-called Standard Model Effective Field Theory. In analogy with previous investigations of charged lepton flavour violating observables, thi…
The lepton flavor violating decay of the Higgs boson $H\to l_Al_B$ is studied within two qualitatively different extensions of the Yukawa sector: one renormalizable and the other nonrenormalizable; both incorporating Lorentz violation in a model-independent fashion. These extensions are characterized by Yukawa-like matrices, the former by a constant Lorentz 2-tensor $Y^{AB}_{μν}$, whereas the latter by a constant Lorentz vector $Y^{AB}_μ$. It is found that the experimental constraints on the decays $l_A\to l_Bγ$ severely restrict lepton flavor violating Higgs signals in the renormalizable scen…
In this work we consider a model including dark sector bosons interacting through tensor currents with Standard Model leptons. We show that for certain values of the interaction constant this model has the potential of providing an explanation for the discrepancy between theory and experiment, regarding the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. The effect on the already established measurements for the electron are small and the lepton universality violation is naturally incorporated. Possible experimental searches together with systematic approach to characteristic properties of the final st…
We systematically analyze the possibility that bi-large lepton mixing originates from the charged lepton sector in models with sequential dominance for the right-handed charged leptons. We derive analytical expressions for the mixing angles and CP phases of the MNS matrix for the case of zero mixing from the neutrino sector, which is arranged for with the help of sequential dominance for the right-handed neutrinos. For small $θ_{13}$, the two large mixing angles $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{23}$ are determined by the Yukawa couplings to the dominant right-handed tau. The mixing angle $θ_{13}$ is then gove…
In the simplest examples of models with a discrete quark-lepton symmetry, an electroweak symmetry breaking sector with more than one Higgs doublet is necessary to obtain the correct mass relations between quarks and leptons. A two Higgs doublet model has flavour-nonconserving Yukawa couplings, which are proportional to the masses of the quark-lepton symmetric partners of the fermions. We describe how flavour changing leptonic decays can occur, with branching ratios not far beyond that currently measureable, enabling investigation of the phenomenology of such models.
We study the effects of considering nontrivial unphysical lepton sector phases on the group theoretical properties of the flavor and generalized CP symmetry elements in the case where there are three light, distinct Majorana neutrino species. We highlight the similarities and differences between the charged lepton and neutrino sectors and further elucidate the group properties of the flavor and generalized CP symmetry elements. We show how the inclusion of these leptonic phases affects the bottom-up constructions of these symmetry elements and discuss the implications for top-down model buildi…
We propose the minimal and renormalizable non-supersymmetric top SU(5) models where the $SU(5)\times SU(3)'_C \times SU(2)'_L \times U(1)'_Y$ gauge symmetry is broken down to the Standard Model (SM) gauge symmetry at the TeV scale. The first two families of the SM fermions are charged under $SU(3)'_C \times SU(2)'_L \times U(1)'_Y$ while the third family is charged under SU(5). In the minimal top SU(5) model, we show that the quark CKM mixing matrix can be generated via dimension-five operators, and the proton decay problem can be solved by fine-tuning the coefficients of the higher dimensiona…
We address the observed discrepancies in the anomalous magnetic dipole moments (MDM) of the muon and electron by extending the inert two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) with SM gauge singlet complex scalar field and singlet Vector-like Lepton (VLL) field. We obtain the allowed parameter space constrained from the Higgs decays to gauge Bosons at LHC, LEP II data and electro-weak precision measurements. The muon and electron MDM's are then explained within a common parameter space for different sets of allowed couplings and masses of the model particles.
The Higgs boson offers a unique window to hidden sector fields S_i, singlets under the Standard Model gauge group, via the renormalizable interactions |H|^2 S_i^2. We prove that such interactions can provide new patterns for electroweak breaking, including radiative breaking by dimensional transmutation consistent with LEP bounds, and trigger the strong enough first order phase transition required by electroweak baryogenesis.
We propose a lepton model under modular $A_4$ and gauged $U(1)_R$ symmetries, in which the neutrino masses are induced at one-loop level. Thanks to the modular $A_4$ symmetry, we have several predictions on the lepton sector, especially, on fixed points of $τ=i,ω\equiv e^{2πi/3},i\times \infty$ each of which has remnant symmetry; $Z_2$ for $τ=i$ and $Z_3$ for $τ=ω, i\infty$. These points are favored by a string theory and phenomenologically interesting.
We discuss a model with a dark sector, in which smallness of mass for charged leptons and neutrinos can naturally be explained by one-loop effects mediated by particles in the dark sector. These new particles, including dark matter candidates, also contribute to the anomalous magnetic dipole moment, denoted by $(g-2)$, for charged leptons. We show that our model can explain the muon $(g-2)$ anomaly and observed neutrino oscillations under the constraints from lepton flavor violating decays of charged leptons. We illustrate that the scenario with scalar dark matter is highly constrained by dire…
We consider a neutrino mass model where all leptonic mixing is induced by a heavy Majorana sector through the seesaw type I mechanism, while the Dirac mass matrices are diagonal. Such a pattern occurs naturally in grand unified theories. Constraints on the parameters of the models are considered and it is shown that a normal neutrino mass hierarchy is preferred. The lightest neutrino mass is typically small, leading to nonobservable rates for neutrinoless double beta decay in the normal hierarchy case.
We review the current status of the data on neutrino masses and lepton mixing and the prospects for measuring the CP-violating phases in the lepton sector. The possible connection between low energy CP violation encoded in the Dirac and Majorana phases of the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata mixing matrix and successful leptogenesis is emphasized in the context of seesaw extensions of the Standard Model with a flavor symmetry Gf (and CP symmetry).
It is a well-known fact that the minimal renormalizable supersymmetric SU(5) model is ruled out assuming superpartner masses of the order of a few TeV. Giving up this constraint and assuming only SU(5) boundary conditions for the soft terms, we find that the model is still alive. The viable region of the parameter space typically features superpartner masses of order $10^2$ to $10^4$ TeV, with tan beta values between 2 and 5, but lighter spectra with single states around 10 TeV are also possible. The main constraints come from proton decay, the Higgs mass, the requirement of the SU(5) spectrum…
In this work we will investigate Lagrangians of the standard model extended by three right-handed neutrinos, and the consequences of invariance under finite groups G for lepton masses and mixing matrices are studied. The main part of this work is the systematic analysis of finite subgroups of SU(3). The analysis of these groups may act as a toolkit for future model building.
The virtual effects of the Zee charged scalar boson on the lepton-family-number (LFN) violating processes are studied. We obtain the constraints on the individual Yukawa coupling constants of the Zee boson to leptons. Using these constraints, we predict the upper bounds on the muonium-antimuonium conversion probability, the branching fractions of the LFN violating decays such as $τ\to eγ$, $τ\to μγ$, $τ^- \to μ^+e^-e^-$ and $τ\to e^+μ^-μ^-$. The contribution of the Zee boson to the muon anomalous magnetic moment is also considered
We discuss how θ_{13} \neq 0 is accommodated in a recently proposed renormalizable model of neutrino mixing using the non-Abelian discrete symmetry T_7 in the context of a supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with gauged U(1)_{B-L}. We predict a correlation between θ_{13} and θ_{23}, as well as the effective neutrino mass m_{ee} in neutrinoless double beta decay.
The fundamental issue of the origin of mass for all quarks and leptons (including Majorana neutrinos) is linked to dark matter, odd under an exactly conserved Z(2) symmetry which may or may not be derivable from an U(1) gauge symmetry. The observable sector interacts with a proposed dark sector which consists of heavy neutral singlet Dirac fermions and suitably chosen new scalars. Flavor symmetry is implemented in a renormalizable context with just the one Higgs doublet of the standard model in such a way that all observed fermions obtain their masses radiatively through dark matter.
