To a plane curve singularity one associates a multi-index filtration on the ring of germs of functions of two variables defined by the orders of a function on irreducible components of the curve. The Poincare series of this filtration turnes out to coincide with the Alexander polynomial of the curve germ. For a finite set of divisorial valuations on the ring corresponding to some components of the exceptional divisor of a modification of the plane, in a previous paper there was obtained a formula for the Poincare series of the corresponding multi-index filtration similar to the one associated to plane germs. Here we show that the Poincare series of a set of divisorial valuations on the ring of germs of functions of two variables defines "the topology of the set of the divisors" in the sense that it defines the minimal resolution of this set up to combinatorial equivalence. For the plane curve singularity case, we also give a somewhat simpler proof of the statement by Yamamoto which proves that the Alexander polynomial is equivalent to the embedded topology.
We deal with a divisorial contraction in dimension 3 which contracts its exceptional divisor to a cA_1 point. We prove that any such contraction is obtained by a suitable weighted blow-up.
This paper shows a finiteness property of a divisorial valuation in terms of arcs. First we show that every divisorial valuation over an algebraic variety corresponds to an irreducible closed subset of the arc space. Then we define the codimension for this subset and give a formula of the codimension in terms of "relative Mather canonical class". By using this subset, we prove that a divisorial valuation is determined by assigning the values of finite functions. We also have a criterion for a divisorial valuation to be a monomial valuation by assigning the values of finite functions.
We treat threefolds with divisorial contractions whose exceptional divisors contract to compound Du Val points. We prove that general elements in their anticanonical systems around the exceptional divisors have at worst Du Val singularities. As applications to classification, we describe divisorial contractions to compound A_n points, and moreover we conclude that discrepancies of divisorial contractions to compound D_n or E_n points are at most four.
We deal with a divisorial contraction in dimension 3 which contracts its exceptional divisor to a smooth point. We prove that any such contraction can be obtained by a suitable weighted blow-up.
We show that 3-fold terminal flips and divisorial contractions to a curve may be factored by a sequence of weighted blow-ups, flops, blow-downs to a locally complete intersection curve in a smooth 3-fold or divisorial contractions to a point.
We consider divisorial filtration on the rings of functions on hypersurface singularities associated with Newton diagrams and their analogues for plane curve singularities. We compute the multi-variable Poincaré series for the latter ones.
In this paper we introduce a maximal divisorial set in the arc space of a variety. The generalized Nash problem is reduced to a translation problem of the inclusion of two maximal divisorial sets. We study this problem and show a counter example to the most natural expectation even for a non-singular variety.
Following the first paper, we continue to study Mori extractions from singular curves centred in a smooth 3-fold. We treat the case where the divisorial extraction exists in relative codimension at most 3.
Let d be a positive integer. There are several versions of d-gonality for tropical curves, stable d-gonality and divisorial d-gonality, which are both inspired by d-gonality for compact Riemann surfaces. However, that conditions are not equivalent. We have a condition of divisors equivalent to stable d-gonality for tropical curves.
Using the theory of jet schemes, we give a new approach to the description of a minimal generating sequence of a divisorial valuations on $\textbf{A}^2.$ For this purpose, we show how one can recover the approximate roots of an analytically irreducible plane curve from the equations of its jet schemes. As an application, for a given divisorial valuation $v$ centered at the origin of $\textbf{A}^2,$ we construct an algebraic embedding $\textbf{A}^2\hookrightarrow \textbf{A}^N,N\geq 2$ such that $v$ is the trace of a monomial valuation on $\textbf{A}^N.$ We explain how results in this direction …
We define a divisorial motivic zeta function for stable curves with marked points which agrees with Kapranov's motivic zeta function when the curve is smooth and unmarked. We show that this zeta function is rational, and give a formula in terms of the dual graph of the curve.

In this note, we extend work of Farkas and Rimányi on applying quadric rank loci to finding divisors of small slope on the moduli space of curves by instead considering all divisorial conditions on the hypersurfaces of a fixed degree containing a projective curve. This gives rise to a large family of virtual divisors on $\overline{\mathcal{M}_g}$. We determine explicitly which of these divisors are candidate counterexamples to the Slope Conjecture. The potential counterexamples exist on $\overline{\mathcal{M}_g}$, where the set of possible values of $g\in \{1,\ldots,N\}$ has density $Ω(\log(N)…
In this paper, we obtain a complete classification of smooth toric Fano varieties equipped with extremal contractions which contract divisors to curves for any dimension. As an application, we obtain a complete classification of smooth projective toric varieties which can be equivariantly blown-up to Fano along curves.
The Maroni stratification on the Hurwitz space of degree $d$ covers of genus $g$ has a stratum that is a divisor only if $d-1$ divides $g$. Here we construct a stratification on the Hurwitz space that is analogous to the Maroni stratification, but has a divisor for all pairs $(d,g)$ with $d \leq g$ with a few exceptions and we calculate the divisor class of an extension of these divisors to the compactified Hurwitz space.
Let C be a smooth curve on an index 1 terminal 3-fold. We investigate the existence of extremal terminal divisorial contractions Y-->X that contract an irreducible surface E to C. We consider cases in respect to the singularities of the general hypersurface section S of X through C. We completely classify such contractions in the case that S has A_i, i < 4 and D_2n for any n, type singularities.
We determine the cycle classes of effective divisors in the compactified Hurwitz spaces of curves of genus g with a linear system of degree d that extend the Maroni divisors on the open Hurwitz space. Our approach uses Chern classes associated to a global-to-local evaluation map of a vector bundle over a generic $P^1$-bundle over the Hurwitz space.
Let X/T be a one parameter family of canonical 3-folds and let D be a Weil divisor on it flat over T. We study the problem of when the D_t-minimal models of X_t form a family and we obtain conditions for this to happen. As an application of this we classify terminal divisorial contractions Y-->X that contract an irreducible divisor E onto a smooth curve C in the case when the general hyperplane section S of X through C is a D5 DuVal singularity.
Let X be the germ of a Gorenstein 3-fold singularity and C a smooth curve through it such that the general hyperplane section S of X containing D is DuVal of type E6 or E7. In this paper we obtain criteria for the existence of a terminal divisorial extremal neighborhood f: Y-->X contracting an irreducible divisor E onto C and classify all such neighborhoods.
We consider surfaces $X$ defined by plane divisorial valuations $ν$ of the quotient field of the local ring $R$ at a closed point $p$ of the projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$ over an arbitrary algebraically closed field $k$ and centered at $R$. We prove that the regularity of the cone of curves of $X$ is equivalent to the fact that $ν$ is non positive on ${\mathcal O}_{\mathbb{P}^2}(\mathbb{P}^2\setminus L)$, where $L$ is a certain line containing $p$. Under these conditions, we characterize when the characteristic cone of $X$ is closed and its Cox ring finitely generated. Equivalent conditions …
Consider a singular curve $Γ$ contained in a smooth 3-fold $X$. Assuming the general elephant conjecture, the general hypersurface section $Γ\subset S\subset X$ is Du Val. Under that assumption, this paper describes the construction of a divisorial extraction from $Γ$ by Kustin--Miller unprojection. Terminal extractions from $Γ\subset X$ are proved not to exist if $S$ is of type $D_{2k}, E_7$ or $E_8$ and are classified if $S$ is of type $A_1,A_2$ or $E_6$. The $A_n$ and $D_{2k+1}$ cases shall be considered in a further paper.
In dimension $n = 2m-2 \geq 4$ adjunction theoretic scrolls over a smooth $m$-fold may not be classical scrolls, due to the existence of divisorial fibers. A $4$-dimensional scroll $(X,L)$ over $\mathbb P^3$ of this type is considered, and the equation of its Hilbert curve $Γ$ is determined in two ways, one of which relies on the fact that $(X,L)$ is at the same time a classical scroll over a threefold $Y \not=\mathbb P^3$. It turns out that $Γ$ does not perceive divisorial fibers. The equation we obtain also shows that a question raised in a previous article by Beltrametti, Lanteri and Sommes…
Let $Π^c_K\toΠ_K$ be the maximal pro-$\ell$ abelian-by-central, respectively abelian, Galois groups of a function field $K|k$ with $k$ algebraically closed and ${\rm char}\neq\ell$. We show that $K|k$ can be functorially reconstructed by group theoretical recipes from $Π^c_K$ endowed with the set of divisorial inertia ${\rm Inrdiv}(K)\subsetΠ_K$. As applications, one has: (i) A group theoretical recipe to reconstruct $K|k$ from $Π^c_K$, provided either ${\rm Tr.deg}(K|k)>{\rm dim}(k)+1$ or ${\rm tr.deg}(K|k) >{\rm dim}(k)>1$, where ${\rm dim}(k)$ is the Kronecker dimension; (ii) An application…
A notion of Poincaré series was introduced by A.Campillo et al. It was developed by Delgado and Gusein-Zade for a multi-index filtration corresponding to the sequence of blow-ups. The present paper suggests the way to generalize the notion of Poincaré series to the case of arbitrary locally free sheaf on the modification of complex plane $\mathbb{C}^2$. This series is expressed through the topological invariants of the sheaf. For the sheaf of holomorphic functions the answer coincides with the Poincaré series found before.
Using the language of polyhedral divisors and divisorial fans we describe invariant divisors on normal varieties X which admit an effective codimension one torus action. In this picture X is given by a divisorial fan on a smooth projective curve Y. Cartier divisors on X can be described by piecewise affine functions h on the divisorial fan S whereas Weil divisors correspond to certain zero and one dimensional faces of it. Furthermore we provide descriptions of the divisor class group and the canonical divisor. Global sections of line bundles O(D_h) will be determined by a subset of a weight po…
In this paper, we initiate our investigation of log canonical models for the moduli space of curves with the boundary divisor $\a \d$ as we decrease $\a$ from 1 to 0. We prove that for the first critical value $\a = 9/11$, the log canonical model is isomorphic to the moduli space of pseudostable curves, which have nodes and cusps as singularities. We also show that $\a = 7/10$ is the next critical value, i.e., the log canonical model stays the same in the interval $(7/10, 9/11]$. In the appendix, we develop a theory of log canonical models of stacks that explains how these can be expressed in …
We investigate the minimal number of generators $μ$ and the depth of divisorial ideals over normal semigroup rings. Such ideals are defined by the inhomogeneous systems of linear inequalities associated with the support hyperplanes of the semigroup. The main result is that for every bound $C$ there exist, up to isomorphism, only finitely divisorial ideals $I$ such that $μ(I)\le C$. It follows that there exist only finitely many Cohen--Macaulay divisor classes. Moreover we determine the minimal depth of all divisorial ideals and the behaviour of $μ$ and depth in ``arithmetic progressions'' in t…
We compute a closed formula for the class of the closure of the locus of curves in $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_g$ that admit an abelian differential of signature $κ=(k_1,...,k_{g-2})$.
We prove that a classical theorem of McAdam about the analytic spread of an ideal in a Noetherian local ring is true for divisorial filtrations on an excellent local ring $R$ which is either of equicharacteristic zero or of dimension $\le 3$. In fact, the proof is valid whenever resolution of singularities holds.
Suppose that $R$ is an excellent local domain with maximal ideal $m_R$. The theory of multiplicities and mixed multiplicities of $m_R$-primary ideals extends to (possibly non Noetherian) filtrations of $R$ by $m_R$-primary ideals, and many of the classical theorems for $m_R$-primary ideals continue to hold for filtrations. The celebrated theorems involving inequalities continue to hold for filtrations, but the good conclusions that hold in the case of equality for $m_R$-primary ideals do not hold for filtrations. In this article, we consider multiplicities and mixed multiplicities of $R$ by $m…
In the theory of divisors on multigraphs, the $r^{th}$ divisorial gonality of a graph is the minimum degree of a rank $r$ divisor on that graph. It was proved by Gijswijt et al. that the first divisorial gonality of a finite graph is NP-hard to compute. We generalize their argument to prove that it is NP-hard to compute the $r^{th}$ divisorial gonality of a finite graph for all $r$. We use this result to prove that it is NP-hard to compute $r^{th}$ stable divisorial gonality for a finite graph, and to compute $r^{th}$ divisorial gonality for a metric graph. We also prove these problems are APX…
We consider a variant of metrised graphs where the edge lengths take values in a commutative monoid, as a higher-rank generalisation of the notion of a tropical curve. Divisorial gonality, which Baker and Norine defined on combinatorial graphs in terms of a chip firing game, is extended to these monoid-metrised graphs. We define geometric gonality of a monoid-metrised graph as the minimal degree of a horizontally conformal, non-degenerate morphism onto an monoid-metrised tree, and prove that geometric gonality is an upper bound for divisorial gonality in the monoid-metrised case. We also show …
In this paper, we study divisorial ideals of a Hibi ring which is a toric ring arising from a partially ordered set. We especially characterize the special class of divisorial ideals called conic using the associated partially ordered set. Using our description of conic divisorial ideals, we also construct a module giving a non-commutative crepant resolution (= NCCR) of the Segre product of polynomial rings. Furthermore, applying the operation called mutation, we give other modules giving NCCRs of it.
In this paper we prove that a classical theorem by McAdam about the analytic spread of an ideal in a Noetherian local ring continues to be true for divisorial filtrations on a two dimensional normal excellent local ring $R$, and that the Hilbert polynomial of the fiber cone of a divisorial filtration on $R$ has a Hilbert function which is the sum of a linear polynomial and a bounded function. We prove these theorems by first studying asymptotic properties of divisors on a resolution of singularities of the spectrum of $R$. The filtration of the symbolic powers of an ideal is an example of a di…
Let $V$ be a finite set of divisorial valuations centered at a 2-dimensional regular local ring $R$. In this paper we study its structure by means of the semigroup of values, $S_V$, and the multi-index graded algebra defined by $V$, $\gr_V R$. We prove that $S_V$ is finitely generated and we compute its minimal set of generators following the study of reduced curve singularities. Moreover, we prove a unique decomposition theorem for the elements of the semigroup. The comparison between valuations in $V$, the approximation of a reduced plane curve singularity $C$ by families of sets $V^{(k)}$ o…
We investigate the notion of symplectic divisorial compactification for symplectic 4-manifolds with either convex or concave type boundary. This is motivated by the notion of compactifying divisors for open algebraic surfaces. We give a sufficient and necessary criterion, which is simple and also works in higher dimensions, to determine whether an arbitrarily small concave/convex neighborhood exist for an $ω$-orthogonal symplectic divisor (a symplectic plumbing). If deformation of symplectic form is allowed, we show that a symplectic divisor has either a concave or convex neighborhood whenever…
The first goal of the present paper is to study the class groups of the edge rings of complete multipartite graphs, denoted by $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$, where $1 \leq r_1 \leq \cdots \leq r_n$. More concretely, we prove that the class group of $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^n$ if $n =3$ with $r_1 \geq 2$ or $n \geq 4$, while it turns out that the excluded cases can be deduced into Hibi rings. The second goal is to investigate the special class of divisorial ideals of $\Bbbk[K_{r_1,\ldots,r_n}]$, called conic divisorial ideals. We describe conic divisorial ideals fo…
We study an analytically irreducible algebroid germ (X, 0) of complex singularity by considering the filtrations of its analytic algebra, and their associated graded rings, induced by the divisorial valuations associated to the irreducible components of the exceptional divisor of the normalized blow-up of the normalization (Y, 0) of (X, 0), centered at the point 0 of Y. If (X, 0) is a quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularity, we obtain that the associated graded ring is an algebra of finite type over the field of complex numbers, namely the coordinate ring of a non necessarily normal affine tor…
This note studies the structure of the divisorial fixed part of the dualizing sheaf of a 1-connected curve D on a smooth surface S. It is shown that if the divisorial fixed part F of the dualizing sheaf is non empty then it has arithmetic genus<1 and each component of F is a smooth rational curve.
We introduce a new effective stability named "divisorial stability" for Fano manifolds which is weaker than K-stability and is stronger than slope stability along divisors. We show that we can test divisorial stability via the volume function. As a corollary, we prove that the first coordinate of the barycenter of the Okounkov body of the anticanonical divisor is not bigger than one for any Kähler-Einstein Fano manifold. In particular, for toric Fano manifolds, the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics is equivalent to divisorial semistability. Moreover, we find many non-Kähler-Einstein Fano ma…
We study the divisorial Zariski decomposition on varieties whose first Chern class is zero. We first prove that any exceptional divisor is contractible (up to a birational map that is an isomorphism in codimension one). We then characterize prime exceptional divisors on holomorphic symplectic manifolds.
Two divisors in $¶^n$ are said to be Cremona equivalent if there is a Cremona modification sending one to the other. We produce infinitely many non equivalent divisorial embeddings of any variety of dimension at most 14. Then we study the special case of plane curves and rational hypersurfaces. For the latter we characterise surfaces Cremona equivalent to a plane.
In this paper, we study the singularities of a pair (X,Y) in arbitrary characteristic via jet schemes. For a smooth variety X in characteristic 0, Ein, Lazarsfeld and Mustata showed that there is a correspondence between irreducible closed cylinders and divisorial valuations on X. Via this correspondence, one can relate the codimension of a cylinder to the log discrepancy of the corresponding divisorial valuation. We now extend this result to positive characteristic. In particular, we prove Mustata's log canonical threshold formula avoiding the use of log resolutions, making the formula availa…
The Gieseker-Petri locus GP_g is defined as the locus inside M_g consisting of curves which violate the Gieseker-Petri Theorem. It is known that GP_g has always some divisorial components and it has been conjectured that it is of pure codimension 1 inside M_g. We prove that this holds true for genus up to 13.
