Partition functions for M2-brane theories in various backgrounds are computed. We consider in particular configurations of membranes at orbifold singularities preserving N=5 or N=6 supersymmetry. The worldvolume membrane theory for some of these configurations has been recently constructed in terms of N=6 Chern-Simons theories. The detailed structure of the partition functions as well as their transformation rules under the R-symmetry are explicitly computed using the Plethystic Programme.
Exact expressions for the partition functions of the rigid string and membrane at any temperature are obtained in terms of hypergeometric functions. By using zeta function regularization methods, the results are analytically continued and written as asymptotic sums of Riemann-Hurwitz zeta functions, which provide very good numerical approximations with just a few first terms. This allows to obtain systematic corrections to the results of Polchinski et al., corresponding to the limits $T\rightarrow 0$ and $T\rightarrow \infty$ of the rigid string, and to analyze the intermediate range of temper…
We analyse supermembrane instantons (fully wrapped supermembranes) by computing the partition function of the three-dimensional supersymmetrical U(N) matrix model under periodic boundary conditions. By mapping the model to a cohomological field theory and considering a mass-deformation of the model, we show that the partition function exactly leads to the U-duality invariant measure factor entering supermembrane instanton sums. On the other hand, a computation based on the quasi-classical assumption gives the non U-duality invariant result of the zero-mode analysis by Pioline et al. This is su…
We study relativistic particle, string and membrane theories as defining field theories containing gravity in (0+1), (1+1) and (2+1) spacetime dimensions respectively. We show how an off shell invariance of the massless particle action allows the construction of an extension of the conformal algebra and induces a transition to a non-commutative spacetime geometry. This non-commutative geometry is found to be preserved in the spacetime supersymmetric massless particle theory. It is then shown how the basic bosonic commutators we found for the massless particle may also be encountered in the ten…
In the light-cone closed string and toroidal membrane theories, we associate the global constraints with gauge symmetries. In the closed string case, we show that the physical states defined by the BRS charge satisfy the level-matching condition. In the toroidal membrane case, we show that the Faddeev-Popov ghost and anti-ghost corresponding to the global constraints are essentially free even if we adopt any gauge fixing condition for the local constraint. We discuss the quantum double-dimensional reduction of the wrapped supermembrane with the global constraints.
A Lorentz covariant matrix regularization of membrane thories is studied. It is shown that the action for a bosonic membrane can be defined by matrix regularization in a Lorentz covariant manner. The generator of area preserving diffeomorphism can also be consistently defined by matrix regularization, and we can make the area preserving gauge symmetry manifest. However, the reparametrization BRST charge explicitly depends on a specific basis set introduced to define the matrix regularization. We also briefly comment on an extension of the present formulation to a supermembrane.
We obtain the precise condition on the potentials of Yang-Mills theories in 0+1 dimensions and D0 brane quantum mechanics ensuring the discretness of the spectrum. It is given in terms of a moment of inertia of the membrane. From it we obtain a bound for the mass gap of any D+1 Yang-Mills theory in the slow-mode regime. In particular we analyze the physical case D=3. The quantum mechanical behavior of the theories, concerning its spectrum, is determined by harmonic oscillators with frequencies given by the inertial tensor of the membrane. We find a class of quantum mechanic potential polynomia…
Holographic RG flows can be better understood with the help of radially conserved charges. It was shown by various authors that the bulk gauge and diffeomorphism symmetries lead to the conservation of the zero mode of the holographic U(1) current and, if the spacetime is stationary, to that of the holographic heat current. In describing dual theories with t Hooft anomalies the bulk gauge invariance is broken by Chern-Simons terms. We show that conservation laws can still be derived and used to characterize the anomalous transport in terms of membrane currents at the horizon. We devote particul…
Swimming of microorganisms is studied from a viewpoint of extended objects (strings and membranes) swimming in the incompressible f luid of low Reynolds number. The flagellated motion is analyzed in two dimensional fluid, by using the method developed in the ciliated motion with the Joukowski transformation. Discussion is given on the conserved charges and the algebra which are associated with the area (volume)- preserving diffeomorphisms giving the swimming motion of microorganisms. It is also suggested that the $N$-point string- and membrane-like amplitudes are useful for studying the collec…
Mass deformations of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in three spacetime dimensions are considered. The gluons of the theories are made massive by the inclusion of a non-local gauge and Poincare invariant mass term due to Alexanian and Nair, while the matter fields are given standard Gaussian mass-terms. It is shown that the dimensional reduction of such mass deformed gauge theories defined on $R^3$ or $R\times T^2$ produces matrix quantum mechanics with massive spectra. In particular, all known massive matrix quantum mechanical models obtained by the deformations of dimensional reductions o…
We consider a deformation of the BF theory in any dimension by means of the antifield BRST formalism. Possible consistent interaction terms for the action and the gauge symmetries are analyzed and we find a new class of topological gauge theories. Deformations of the world volume BF theory are considered as possible deformations of the topological open membrane. Therefore if we consider these theories on open membranes, we obtain noncommutative structures of the boundaries of open membranes, and we propose a generalization of the path integral representation of the star deformation.
The partition function of the membrane is investigated. In particular, the case relevant to perturbative string theory of a membrane with topology $S^1 \times Σ$ is examined. The coupling between the string world sheet Euler character and the dilaton is shown to arise from a careful treatment of the membrane partition function measure. This demonstrates that the M-theory origin of the dilaton coupling to the string world sheet is quantum in nature.
The elliptic genus Z_{BH} of a large class of 4D black holes can be expressed as an M-theory partition function on an AdS_3xS^2xCY_3 attractor. We approximate this partition function by summing over multiparticle chiral primary states of membranes which wrap curves in the CY_3 and tile Landau levels on the horizon S^2. Significantly, membranes and antimembranes can preserve the same supercharges if they occupy antipodal points on the horizon. It is shown the membrane contribution to Z_{BH} gives precisely the topological string partition function Z_{top} while the antimembranes give \bar Z_{to…
By integrating out the U(1)_B gauge field, we show that the U(n)xU(n) ABJM theory at level k is equivalent to a Z_k identification of the (SU(n)xSU(n))/Z_n Chern-Simons theory, but only when n and k are coprime. As a consequence, the k=1 ABJM model for two M2-branes in R^8 can be identified with the N=8 (SU(2)xSU(2))/Z_2 theory. We also conjecture that the U(2)xU(2) ABJM model at k=2 is equivalent to the N=8 SU(2)xSU(2)-theory.
We consider the partition function for Euclidean $SU(N)$ super Yang-Mills on a squashed seven-sphere. We show that the localization locus of the partition function has instanton membrane solutions wrapping the six "fixed" three-spheres on the $\mathbb{S}^7$. The ADHM variables of these instantons are fields living on the membrane world volume. We compute their contribution by localizing the resulting three-dimensional supersymmetric field theory. In the round-sphere limit the individual instanton contributions are singular, but the singularities cancel when adding the contributions of all six …
Just as non-commutative gauge theories arise from quantising open strings in a large magnetic field, non-Abelian two-form gauge theories may conceivably be constructed by quantising open membranes in a large three-form magnetic background. We make some observations that arise in following this strategy, with an emphasis on the relation to the quantisation of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms (vpd). In particular, we construct consistent non-Abelian interactions of a two-form in 3+1 dimensions, based on gauge invariance under vpd.
In the first half of this note, after briefly motivating and reviewing membrane field theories, we consider their BPS funnel solutions. We discuss some aspects of embedding M-theory fuzzy funnels in these theories. In the second half, we focus on ABJM theory and explain a test of AdS4/CFT3 based on integrability. We discuss a numerical mismatch at one loop in worldsheet perturbation theory and its possible resolutions.
The AdS/CFT correspondence may connect the landscape of string vacua and the `atomic landscape' of condensed matter physics. We study the stability of a landscape of IR fixed points of N=2 large N gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions, dual to Sasaki-Einstein compactifications of M theory, towards a superconducting state. By exhibiting instabilities of charged black holes in these compactifications, we show that many of these theories have charged operators that condense when the theory is placed at a finite chemical potential. We compute a statistical distribution of critical superconducting tempe…
This thesis consists of two parts. In the first part we investigate the worldvolume supersymmetry algebra of multiple membrane theories. We begin with a description of M-theory branes and their intersections from the perspective of spacetime and worldvolume supersymmetry algebras. We then provide an overview of the recent work on multiple M2-branes focusing on the Bagger-Lambert theory and its relation to the Nambu-Poisson M5-brane and the ABJM theory. The worldvolume supersymmetry algebras of these theories are explicitly calculated and the charges interpreted in terms of spacetime intersecti…
We explicitly construct the creation operators for the quantum field configurations associated to quantum membranes (2-branes) in BF and generalized Chern-Simons theories in a spacetime of dimension D=5. The creation operators for quantum excitations carrying topological charge are also obtained in the same theories. For the case of D=5 generalized Chern-Simons theory, we show that this operator actually creates an open string with a topological charge at its tip. It is shown that a duality structure exists in general, relating the membrane and topological excitation operators and the correspo…
In this work are consider several topics in the Topological Membrane (TM) approach to string theory. The string dynamics is generated from the bulk physics, namely from the 3D Topologically Massive Gauge Theory (TMGT) and Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG). Both (equivalent) path integral and canonical methods of quantizing TMGT are studied. It is shown that Narain constraints on toroidal compactification (integer, even, self-dual momentum lattice) have a natural interpretation in purely three dimensional terms. The Heterotic string and the block structure of c=1 RCFT are derived from the poi…
The target space theory of the N=(2,1) heterotic string may be interpreted as a theory of gravity coupled to matter in either $1+1$ or $2+1$ dimensions. Among the target space theories in $1+1$ dimensions are the bosonic, type II, and heterotic string world sheet field theories in a physical gauge. The $2+1$ dimensional version describes a consistent quantum theory of supermembranes in $10+1$ dimensions. The unifying framework for all of these vacua is a theory of $2+2$ dimensional self-dual geometries embedded in $10+2$ dimensions. There are also indications that the N=(2,1) string describes …
Finite Euler hierarchies of field theory Lagrangians leading to universal equations of motion for new types of string and membrane theories and for {\it classical} topological field theories are constructed. The analysis uses two main ingredients. On the one hand, there exists a generic finite Euler hierarchy for one field leading to a universal equation which generalises the Plebanski equation of self-dual four dimensional gravity. On the other hand, specific maps are introduced between field theories which provide a ``triangular duality'' between certain classes of arbitrary field theories, …
To an outside observer, a black hole's event horizon appears to behave exactly like a dynamical fluid membrane. We extend this membrane paradigm to black holes in general $f(R)$ theories of gravity. We derive the stress tensor and various transport coefficients of the fluid and find that the membrane behaves as a non-Newtonian fluid except for the special case of Einstein gravity. Using Euclidean methods, we study the thermodynamics of the membrane. We speculate on what theories of gravity admit horizons with fluid properties.
We analyse the fluctuations of the ground-state/funnel solutions proposed to describe M2-M5 systems in the level-k mass-deformed/pure Chern-Simons-matter ABJM theory of multiple membranes. We show that in the large N limit the fluctuations approach the space of functions on the 2-sphere rather than the naively expected 3-sphere. This is a novel realisation of the fuzzy 2-sphere in the context of Matrix Theories, which uses bifundamental instead of adjoint scalars. Starting from the multiple M2-brane action, a U(1) Yang-Mills theory on R^{2,1} x S^2 is recovered at large N, which is consistent …
We review developments in the theory of multiple, parallel membranes in M-theory. After discussing the inherent difficulties pertaining to a maximally supersymmetric lagrangian formulation with the appropriate field content and symmetries, we discuss how introducing the concept of 3-algebras allows for such a description. Different choices of 3-algebras lead to distinct classes of 2+1 dimensional theories with varying degrees of supersymmetry. We then describe how these are equivalent to a type of conventional superconformal Chern-Simons gauge theories at level k, coupled to bifundamental matt…
We present and analyze solutions of D=11 supergravity describing the ``near-horizon'' (i.e., asymptotically AdS_4 x S^7) geometry of M2-branes wrapped on surfaces of arbitrary genus. We study the forces experienced by test M2-branes in such backgrounds, and find evidence that extremal branes on surfaces of genera higher than the torus are unstable. Using the holographic connection between AdS spaces and superconformal field theories in the large N limit, we discuss the phases of the associated 2+1 dimensional theories. Finally, we also study the extension of these solutions to other branes, in…
We report on the exact computation of the S^3 partition function of U(N)_k\times U(N)_{-k} ABJM theory for k=1, N=1,...,19. The result is a polynomial in π^{-1} with rational coefficients. As an application of our results we numerically determine the coefficient of the membrane 1-instanton correction to the partition function.
We present an efficient method for computing the zero frequency limit of transport coefficients in strongly coupled field theories described holographically by higher derivative gravity theories. Hydrodynamic parameters such as shear viscosity and conductivity can be obtained by computing residues of poles of the off-shell lagrangian density. We clarify in which sense these coefficients can be thought of as effective couplings at the horizon, and present analytic, Wald-like formulae for the shear viscosity and conductivity in a large class of general higher derivative lagrangians. We show how …
We discuss a general procedure to obtain 1/2 BPS partition functions for generic N=1 quiver gauge theories. These functions count the gauge invariant operators (bosonic and fermionic), charged under all the global symmetries (mesonic and baryonic), in the chiral ring of a given quiver gauge theory. In particular we discuss the inclusion of the spinor degrees of freedom in the partition functions.
We argue, that for a general class of nontrivial bosonic theories the path integral can be related to an equivariant generalization of conventional characteristic classes.
We use a Hodge decomposition and its generalization to non-abelian flat vector bundles to calculate the partition function for abelian and non- abelian BF theories in $n$ dimensions. This enables us to provide a simple proof that the partition function is related to the Ray-Singer torsion defined on flat vector bundles for all odd-dimensional manifolds, and is equal to unity for even dimensions.
We consider superconformal field theories in three and six dimensions with eight supercharges which can be realized on the world-volume of M-theory branes sitting at orbifold singularities. We find that they should admit a N=4 and N=2 supergravity dual in AdS_4 and AdS_7, respectively. We discuss the characteristics of the corresponding gauged supergravities.
In this thesis we provide new tools to determine and explore the Landscape of four-dimensional effective field theories originating from string and M-theory. The main aim is to introduce, within four-dimensional effective descriptions, elements that are predicted from string theory. To this end, a hierarchy of forms is introduced within the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity theories. The inclusion of gauge three-forms delivers a dynamical way to generate flux-induced superpotentials. Instead, gauge two-forms, dual descriptions of axions, may be eventually gauged by three-forms to g…
In the M(atrix) theory by making the expansions of the matrices around the membrane and four-brane solutions we derive the three- and five-dimensional gauge theories on the dual tori. The explicit forms of solutions yield the dual coordinates and each expansion is related to a toroidal compactification of the M(atrix) theory. From the derived Lorentz and gauge invariant actions the gauge coupling constants are shown to be characterized by the volume of the dual tori.
We extend the definitions of characters and partition functions to the case of conformal field theories which contain operators with logarithmic correlation functions. As an example we consider the theories with central charge c = c(p,1) = 13-6(p+1/p), the ``border'' of the discrete minimal series. We show that there is a slightly generalized form of the property of rationality for such logarithmic theories. In particular, we obtain a classification of theories with c = c(p,1) which is similar to the A-D-E classification of c = 1 models.
We present a general prescription by which we can systematically compute exact partition functions of five-dimensional supersymmetric theories which arise in Higgs branches of the $T_N$ theory. The theories may be realized by webs of 5-branes whose dual geometries are non-toric. We have checked our method by calculating the partition functions of the theories realized in various Higgs branches of the $T_3$ theory. A particularly interesting example is the $E_8$ theory which can be obtained by Higgsing the $T_6$ theory. We explicitly compute the partition function of the $E_8$ theory and find t…
We study $N=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories on a large family of squashed 4-spheres preserving $SU(2)\times U(1)\subset SO(4)$ isometry and determine the conditions under which this background is supersymmetric. We then compute the partition function of the theories by using localization technique. The results indicate that for $N=2$ SUSY, including both vector-multiplets and hypermultiplets, the partition function is independent of the arbitrary squashing functions as well as of the other supergravity background fields.
We apply localization techniques to compute the partition function of a two-dimensional N=(2,2) R-symmetric theory of vector and chiral multiplets on S^2. The path integral reduces to a sum over topological sectors of a matrix integral over the Cartan subalgebra of the gauge group. For gauge theories which would be completely Higgsed in the presence of a Fayet-Iliopoulos term in flat space, the path integral alternatively reduces to the product of a vortex times an antivortex partition functions, weighted by semiclassical factors and summed over isolated points on the Higgs branch. As applicat…
We compute the partition functions of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ gauge theories on $S^2 \times \mathbb{R}^2_\varepsilon$ using supersymmetric localization. The path integral reduces to a sum over vortices at the poles of $S^2$ and at the origin of $\mathbb{R}^2_\varepsilon$. The exact partition functions allow us to test Seiberg duality beyond the supersymmetric index. We propose the $\mathcal{N} = 1$ partition functions on the $Ω$-background, and show that the Nekrasov partition functions can be recovered from these building blocks.
We derive the relation between the Hilbert space of certain geometries under the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization and the perturbative prepotentials for the supersymmetric five-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories with massive fundamental matters and with one massive adjoint matter. The gauge theory with one adjoint matter shows interesting features. A five-dimensional generalization of Nekrasov's partition function can be written as a correlation function of two-dimensional chiral bosons and as a partition function of a statistical model of partitions. From a ground state of the statistical model we …
We calculate the one-loop partition function for a massless arbitrary-spin field on quotients of a general dimensional AdS background using the results of arXiv:1103.3627. We use these results to compute the one-loop partition function for a Vasiliev theory in AdS_5. An interesting form of the answer, suggestive of a vacuum character of an enhanced symmetry algebra is obtained. We also observe a close connection between the partition function for this Vasiliev theory and the d-dimensional MacMahon function.
We construct supergravity solutions dual to the twisted field theories arising when M-theory membranes wrap holomorphic curves in Calabi-Yau n-folds. The solutions are constructed in an Abelian truncation of maximal D=4 gauged supergravity and then uplifted to D=11. For four-folds and five-folds we find new smooth AdS/CFT examples and for all cases we analyse the nature of the singularities that arise. Our results provide an interpretation of certain charged topological AdS black holes. We also present the generalised calibration two-forms for the solutions.
We study the BPS spectrum of supersymmetric 5 dimensional field theories and their representations as string webs. It is found that a state of given charges exists when it has a representation as an irreducible string web. Its spin is determined by the string web. The number of fermionic zero modes is 8g+4b, where g is the number of internal faces and b is the number of boundaries. In the lift to M theory of 4d field theories such states are described by membranes ending on the 5-brane, breaking SUSY from 8 to 4, and g becomes the genus of the membrane. Mathematically, we obtain a diagrammatic…
Recently Witten conjectured the existence of a family of "extremal" conformal field theories (ECFTs) of central charge c=24k, which are supposed to be dual to three-dimensional pure quantum gravity in AdS3. Assuming their existence, we determine explicitly the genus two partition functions of k=2 and k=3 ECFTs, using modular invariance and the behavior of the partition function in degenerating limits of the Riemann surface. The result passes highly nontrivial tests and in particular provides a piece of evidence for the existence of the k=3 ECFT. We also argue that the genus two partition funct…
At the core of nonperturbative theories of quantum gravity lies the holographic encoding of bulk data in large matrices. At present this mapping is poorly understood. The plane wave matrix model provides a laboratory for isolating aspects of this problem in a controlled setting. At large boosts, configurations of concentric membranes become superselection sectors, whose exact spectra are known. From the bulk point of view one expects product states of individual membranes to be contained within the full spectrum. However, for non-BPS states this inclusion relation is obscured by Gauss law cons…
We propose a quantum theory of membranes designed such that the ground-state wavefunction of the membrane with compact spatial topology Σ_h reproduces the partition function of the bosonic string on worldsheet Σ_h. The construction involves worldvolume matter at quantum criticality, described in the simplest case by Lifshitz scalars with dynamical critical exponent z=2. This matter system must be coupled to a novel theory of worldvolume gravity, also exhibiting quantum criticality with z=2. We first construct such a nonrelativistic "gravity at a Lifshitz point" with z=2 in D+1 spacetime dimens…
We give two results concerning the construction of modular invariant partition functions for conformal field theories constructed by tensoring together other conformal field theories. First we show how the possible modular invariants for the tensor product theory are constrained if the allowed modular invariants of the individual conformal field theory factors have been classified. We illustrate the use of these constraints for theories of the type $SU(2)_{K_A}\otimes SU(2)_{K_B}$, finding all consistent theories for $K_A,K_B$ odd. Second we show how known diagonal modular invariants can be us…
Two different families of abelian chiral gauge theories on the torus are investigated: the aim is to test the consistency of two-dimensional anomalous gauge theories in the presence of global degrees of freedom for the gauge field. An explicit computation of the partition functions shows that unitarity is recovered in particular regions of parameter space and that the effective dynamics is described in terms of fermionic interacting models. For the first family, this connection with fermionic models uncovers an exact duality which is conjectured to hold in the nonabelian case as well.
We consider $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric pure gauge theories on toric Kähler manifolds, with particular emphasis on $\mathbb{CP}^2$. By choosing a vector generating a $U(1)$ action inside the torus of the manifold, we construct equivariantly twisted theories. Then, using localization, we compute their supersymmetric partition functions. As expected, these receive contributions from a classical, a one-loop, and an instanton term. It turns out that the one-loop term is trivial and that the instanton contributions are localized at the fixed points of the $U(1)$. In fact the full partition funct…
We study the partition function of three-dimensional ${\mathcal N}=4$ superconformal Chern-Simons theories of the circular quiver type, which are natural generalizations of the ABJM theory, the worldvolume theory of M2-branes. In the ABJM case, it was known that the perturbative part of the partition function sums up to the Airy function as $Z(N)=e^{A}C^{-1/3}\mathrm{Ai}[C^{-1/3}(N-B)]$ with coefficients $C$, $B$ and $A$ and that for the non-perturbative part the divergences coming from the coefficients of worldsheet instantons and membrane instantons cancel among themselves. We find that many…
A systematic analysis of the genus two vacuum amplitudes of chiral self-dual conformal field theories is performed. It is explained that the existence of a modular invariant genus two partition function implies infinitely many relations among the structure constants of the theory. All of these relations are shown to be a consequence of the associativity of the OPE, as well as the modular covariance properties of the torus one-point functions. Using these techniques we prove that for the proposed extremal conformal field theories at c=24k a consistent genus two vacuum amplitude exists for all k…
We study $SU(2)$ gauge theories coupled to $(A_1,D_N)$ theories with or without a fundamental hypermultiplet. For even $N$, a formula for the contribution of $(A_1,D_N)$ to the Nekrasov partition function was recently obtained by us with Y.~Sugawara and T.~Uetoko. In this paper, we generalize it to the case of odd $N$ in the classical limit, under the condition that the relevant couplings and vacuum expectation values of Coulomb branch operators of $(A_1,D_N)$ are all turned off. We apply our formula to the $(A_2,A_5)$ theory to find that its prepotential is related to that of the $SU(2)$ gaug…
We evaluate the Nekrasov partition function of 5d gauge theories engineered by webs of 5-branes, using the refined topological vertex on the dual Calabi-Yau threefolds. The theories include certain non-Lagrangian theories such as the T_N theory. The refined topological vertex computation generically contains contributions from decoupled M2-branes which are not charged under the 5d gauge symmetry engineered. We argue that, after eliminating them, the refined topological string partition function agrees with the 5d Nekrasov partition function. We explicitly check this for the T_3 theory as well …
We study N = 4 quiver theories on the three-sphere. We compute partition functions using the localisation method by Kapustin et al. solving exactly the matrix integrals at finite N, as functions of mass and Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters. We find a simple explicit formula for the partition function of the quiver tail T(SU(N)). This formula opens the way for the analysis of star-shaped quivers and their mirrors (that are the Gaiotto-type theories arising from M5 branes on punctured Riemann surfaces). We provide non-perturbative checks of mirror symmetry for infinite classes of theories and find th…
We test the AdS/CFT correspondence by computing the partition function of some $\mathcal{N}=2$ quiver Chern-Simons-matter theories on three-sphere. The M-theory backgrounds are of the Freund-Rubin type with the seven-dimensional internal space given as Sasaki-Einstein manifolds $Q^{1,1,1}$ or $V^{5,2}$. Localization technique reduces the exact path integral to a matrix model, and we study the large-N behavior of the partition function. For simplicity we consider only non-chiral models which have a real-valued partition function. The result is in full agreement with the prediction of the gravit…
We give a pedagogical introduction to the study of supersymmetric partition functions of 3D $\mathcal{N}{=}2$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter theories (with an $R$-symmetry) on half-BPS closed three-manifolds---including $S^3$, $S^2 \times S^1$, and any Seifert three-manifold. Three-dimensional gauge theories can flow to non-trivial fixed points in the infrared. In the presence of 3D $\mathcal{N}{=}2$ supersymmetry, many exact results are known about the strongly-coupled infrared, due in good part to powerful localization techniques. We review some of these techniques and emphasize some mor…
Thus far in the search for, and classification of, `physical' modular invariant partition functions $\sum N_{LR}\,\c_L\,\C_R$ the attention has been focused on the {\it symmetric} case where the holomorphic and anti-holomorphic sectors, and hence the characters $\c_L$ and $\c_R$, are associated with the same Kac-Moody algebras $\g_L=\g_R$ and levels $k_L=k_R$. In this paper we consider the more general possibility where $(\g_L,k_L)$ may not equal $(\g_R,k_R)$. We discuss which choices of algebras and levels may correspond to well-defined conformal field theories, we find the `smallest' such {\…
