We apply a semiclassical approach to express finite temperature dynamical correlation functions of gapped spin models analytically. We show that the approach of [A. Rapp, G. Zarand, Phys. Rev. B 74, 014433 (2006)] can also be used for the S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain, whose lineshape can be measured experimentally. We generalize our calculations to O(N) quantum spin models and the sine-Gordon model in one dimension, and show that in all these models, the finite temperature decay of certain correlation functions is characterized by the same universal semiclassical relaxation function.
Motivated by the phenomenologies of dynamic roughening of strings in random media and magnetohydrodynamics, we examine the universal properties of driven diffusive system with coupled fields. We demonstrate that cross-correlations between the fields lead to amplitude-ratios and scaling exponents varying continuosly with the strength of these cross-correlations. The implications of these results for experimentally relevant systems are discussed.
We study the properties of one-dimensional gapped Heisenberg antiferromagnets in the presence of an arbitrary strong staggered magnetic field. For these systems we predict a universal form for the staggered magnetization curve. This function, as well as the effect the staggered field has on the energy gaps in longitudinal and transversal excitation spectra, are determined from the universal form of the effective potential in O(3)-symmetric 1+1--dimensional field theory. Our theoretical findings are in excellent agreement with recent neutron scattering data on R_2 Ba Ni O_5 (R = magnetic rare e…
We calculate exactly the first cumulants of the integrated current and of the activity (which is the total number of changes of configurations) of the symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) on a ring with periodic boundary conditions. Our results indicate that for large system sizes the large deviation functions of the current and of the activity take a universal scaling form, with the same scaling function for both quantities. This scaling function can be understood either by an analysis of Bethe ansatz equations or in terms of a theory based on fluctuating hydrodynamics or on the macrosco…
Temperature dependence of the magnetization of the Haldane spin chain at finite magnetic field is analyzed systematically. Quantum Monte Carlo data indicates a clear minimum of magnetization as a function of temperature in the gapless regime. On the basis of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, we argue that this minimum is rather universal and can be observed for general axially symmetric quasi-one-dimensional spin systems. Our argument is confirmed by the magnetic-field dependence of the spin-wave velocity obtained numerically. One can estimate a magnitude of the gap of any such systems by …
Universality, where microscopic details become irrelevant, takes place in thermodynamic phase transitions. The universality is captured by a singular scaling function of the thermodynamic variables, where the scaling exponents are determined by symmetries and dimensionality only. Universality can persist even for non-equilibrium phase transitions. It implies that a hydrodynamic approach can capture the singular universal scaling function, even far from equilibrium. In particular, we show these results for phase transitions in the large deviation function of the current in diffusive systems wit…
We carry out a numerical study of the bi-partite entanglement entropy in the gapped regime of two paradigmatic quantum spin chain models: the Ising chain in an external magnetic field and the anti-ferromagnetic XXZ model. The universal scaling limit of these models is described by the massive Ising field theory and the SU(2)-Thirring (sine-Gordon) model, respectively. We may therefore exploit quantum field theoretical results to predict the behaviour of the entropy. We numerically confirm that, in the scaling limit, corrections to the saturation of the entropy at large region size are proporti…
The extinction transition on a one dimensional heterogeneous substrate with diffusive correlations is studied. Diffusively correlated heterogeneity is shown to affect the location of the transition point, as the reactants adapt to the fluctuating environment. At the transition point the density decays like $t^{-0.159}$, as predicted by the theory of directed percolation. However, the scaling function describing the behavior away from the transition shows significant deviations from the DP predictions; it is suggested, thus, that the off-transition behavior of the system is governed by local ad…
We consider a gas of point particles moving in a one-dimensional channel with a hard-core inter-particle interaction that prevents particle crossings --- this is called single-file motion. Starting from equilibrium initial conditions we observe the motion of a tagged particle. It is well known that if the individual particle dynamics is diffusive, then the tagged particle motion is sub-diffusive, while for ballistic particle dynamics, the tagged particle motion is diffusive. Here we compute exactly the large deviation function for the tagged particle displacement and show that this is universa…
The sine-Gordon model appears as the low-energy effective field theory of various one-dimensional gapped quantum systems. Here we investigate the dynamics of generic, non-integrable systems belonging to the sine-Gordon family at finite temperature within the semiclassical approach. Focusing on time scales where the effect of nontrivial quasiparticle scatterings becomes relevant, we obtain universal results for the long-time behavior of dynamical correlation functions. We find that correlation functions of vertex operators behave neither ballistically nor diffusively but follow a stretched expo…
We compute the spin structure factor of XXZ spin chains in the Heisenberg and gapped (Ising) regimes in the high-temperature limit for nonzero magnetization, within the framework of generalized hydrodynamics including diffusive corrections. The structure factor shows a hierarchy of timescales in the gapped phase, owing to $s$-spin magnon bound states (`strings') of various sizes. Although short strings move ballistically, long strings move primarily diffusively as a result of their collisions with short strings. The interplay between these effects gives rise to anomalous power-law decay of the…
We show, using the macroscopic fluctuation theory of Bertini, De Sole, Gabrielli, Jona-Lasinio, and Landim, that the statistics of the current of the symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) connected to two reservoirs are the same on an arbitrary large finite domain in dimension $d$ as in the one dimensional case. Numerical results on squares support this claim while results on cubes exhibit some discrepancy. We argue that the results of the macroscopic fluctuation theory should be recovered by increasing the size of the contacts. The generalization to other diffusive systems is straightforw…
Recent work on stochastic interacting particle systems with two particle species (or single-species systems with kinematic constraints) has demonstrated the existence of spontaneous symmetry breaking, long-range order and phase coexistence in nonequilibrium steady states, even if translational invariance is not broken by defects or open boundaries. If both particle species are conserved, the temporal behaviour is largely unexplored, but first results of current work on the transition from the microscopic to the macroscopic scale yield exact coupled nonlinear hydrodynamic equations and indicate…
For diffusive systems that can be described by fluctuating hydrodynamics and by the Macroscopic Fluctuation Theory of Bertini et al., the total current fluctuations display universal features when the system is closed and in equilibrium. When the system is taken out of equilibrium by a boundary-drive, current fluctuations, at least for a particular family of diffusive systems, display the same universal features as in equilibrium. To achieve this result, we exploit a mapping between the fluctuations in a boundary-driven nonequilibrium system and those in its equilibrium counterpart. Finally, w…
Inspired by the physics of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) a simplified coupled Burgers-like model in one dimension (1d), a generalization of the Burgers model to coupled degrees of freedom, is proposed to describe 1dMHD. In addition to MHD, this model serves as a 1d reduced model for driven binary fluid mixtures. Here we have performed a comprehensive study of the universal properties of the generalized d-dimensional version of the reduced model. We employ both analytical and numerical approaches. In particular, we determine the scaling exponents and the amplitude-ratios of the relevant two-point …
We briefly review data analysis of the Island order book, part of NASDAQ, which suggests a framework to which all limit order markets should comply. Using a simple exclusion particle model, we argue that short-time price over-diffusion in limit order markets is due to the non-equilibrium of order placement, cancellation and execution rates, which is an inherent feature of real limit order markets.
Extending a Boltzmann-Langevin theory to magnons, we show a universality of current-noise suppression in diffusive systems against the difference of quantum-statistical properties of bosons and fermions. To this end, starting from a quantum kinetic equation for magnons subjected to thermal gradient in dilute impurities, we derive a bosonic counterpart of the semiclassical Boltzmann-Langevin equation for electrons and evaluate a magnonic current-noise in the diffusive insulating magnet. We theoretically discover that compared with a Poissonian shot noise of magnons in an insulating ferromagneti…
We study the anomalous transport in systems of random walks (RW's) on comb-like lattices with fractal sidebranches, showing subdiffusion, and in a system of Brownian particles driven by a random shear along the x-direction, showing a superdiffusive behavior. In particular, we discuss whether scaling and universality are present or not in the shapes of the particle distribution along the preferential transport direction (x-axis).
We have studied the effect of non-magnetic Zn impurities in the coupled spin-ladder Bi(Cu1xZnx)2PO6 using 31P NMR, muSR and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show that the impurities induce in their vicinity antiferromagnetic polarizations, extending over a few unit cells. At low temperature, these extended moments freeze in a process which is found universal among various other spin-gapped compounds: isolated ladders, Haldane or Spin-Peierls chains. This allows us to propose a simple common framework to explain the generic low-temperature impurity induced freezings observed in low …
The dissipative dynamics of a vortex in a finite temperature trapped Bose-Einstein condensate are shown to be governed by a {\em diffusive instability}. In the weakly interacting regime we find a cross-over from instability to metastability of the vortex, determined only by the relative rotation rate of the vortex and thermal cloud. Even in the thermodynamically stable regime there is a finite lifetime arising from diffusive instability. We find the mean exit time for the vortex from the condensate, and show that near the critical frequency for thermodynamic stability the lifetime has a univer…
We study fluctuation properties of a one-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg model out of equilibrium, focusing in particular on the gapped regime. Within the open-system setting we study large-deviation properties of the spin current. Numerically evaluating the first four current cumulants in a nonequilibrium stationary state at high energies, we find that the first two cumulants scale with the system size in a diffusive way, while the 3rd and the 4th cumulants do not. This means that the model is not an ordinary diffusive spin conductor.
Topological phases protected by symmetry can occur in gapped and---surprisingly---in critical systems. We consider non-interacting fermions in one dimension with spinless time-reversal symmetry. It is known that the phases are classified by a topological invariant $ω$ and a central charge $c$. We investigate the correlations of string operators, giving insight into the interplay between topology and criticality. In the gapped phases, these non-local string order parameters allow us to extract $ω$. Remarkably, ratios of correlation lengths are universal. In the critical phases, the scaling dime…
We analyse the long-lasting effects of initial conditions on fluctuations in one-dimensional diffusive systems. We consider both the fluctuations of current for non-interacting diffusive particles starting from a step-like initial density profile, and the mean-square displacement of tracers in homogeneous systems with single-file diffusion. For these two cases, we show analytically (via the propagator and Macroscopic Fluctuation Theory, respectively) that the long-term memory of initial conditions is mediated by a single static quantity: a generalized compressibility that quantifies the densit…
We put forward a general field theory for membranes with embedded activators and analyse their critical properties using renormalization group techniques. Depending on the membrane-activator coupling, we find a crossover between acoustic and diffusive scaling regimes, with mean-field dynamical critical exponents z = 1 and 2 respectively. We argue that the acoustic scaling, which is exact in all spatial dimensions, is a suitable candidate for the universal description of the spatiotemporal patterns observed at the leading edge of motile cells. Furthermore, one-loop corrections to the diffusive …
We consider space-time correlations in driven diffusive systems which undergo a fluctuation into a regime with an atypically large current or dynamical activity. For a single conserved mass we show that the spatio-temporal density correlations in one space dimension are given by conformally invariant field theories with central charge $c=1$, corresponding to a ballistic universality class with dynamical exponent $z=1$. We derive a phase diagram for atypical behaviour that besides the conformally invariant regime exhibits a regime of phase separation for atypically low current or activity. On t…
We consider classical hard-core particles moving on two parallel chains in the same direction. An interaction between the channels is included via the hopping rates. For a ring, the stationary state has a product form. For the case of coupling to two reservoirs, it is investigated analytically and numerically. In addition to the known one-channel phases, two new regions are found, in particular the one, where the total density is fixed, but the filling of the individual chains changes back and forth, with a preference for strongly different densities. The corresponding probability distribution…
We study finite-temperature magnetization transport in a one-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg model, focusing in particular on the gapped phase. Using numerical simulations by two different methods, a propagation of localized wavepackets and a study of nonequilibrium steady states of a master equation in a linear-response regime, we conclude that the transport at finite temperatures is diffusive. With decreasing temperature the diffusion constant increases, possibly exponentially fast. This means that at low temperatures the transition from ballistic to asymptotic diffusive behavior happens …
We extend beyond the Euler scales the hydrodynamic theory for quantum and classical integrable models developed in recent years, accounting for diffusive dynamics and local entropy production. We review how the diffusive scale can be reached via a gradient expansion of the expectation values of the conserved fields and how the coefficients of the expansion can be computed via integrated steady-state two-point correlation functions, emphasising that PT-symmetry can fully fix the inherent ambiguity in the definition of conserved fields at the diffusive scale. We develop a form factor expansion t…
We study the ballistic-to-diffusive transition induced by the weak breaking of integrability in a boundary-driven XXZ spin-chain. Studying the evolution of the spin current density $\mathcal J^s$ as a function of the system size $L$, we show that, accounting for boundary effects, the transition has a non-trivial universal behavior close to the XX limit. It is controlled by the scattering length $L^*\propto V^{-2}$, where $V$ is the strength of the integrability breaking term. In the XXZ model, the interplay of interactions controls the emergence of a transient "quasi-ballistic" regime at lengt…
We study the decay mechanism of the gapped lowest-lying excitation of a quasi-pure box-trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. Owing to the absence of lower-energy modes, or direct coupling to an external bath, this excitation is protected against one-body (linear) decay and the damping mechanism is exclusively nonlinear. We develop a universal theoretical model that explains this fundamental nonlinear damping as a process whereby two quanta of the gapped lowest excitation mode couple to a higher-energy mode, which subsequently decays into a continuum. We find quantitative agreement between o…
In arXiv:2001.03419 we introduce a universal error bound for constrained unitary dynamics within a well-gapped energy band of an isolated quantum system. Here, we provide the full details on the derivation of the bound. In addition, we generalize the result to isolated quantum many-body systems by employing the local Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, obtaining an error bound that grows polynomially in time. We also generalize the result to Markovian open quantum systems and quantitatively explain the quantum Zeno effect.
We consider the time dependent dispersion properties of overdamped tracer particles diffusing in a one dimensional periodic potential under the influence of an additional constant tilting force $F$. The system is studied in the region where the force is close to the critical value $F_c$ at which the barriers separating neighboring potential wells disappear. We show that, when $F$ crosses the critical value, the shape of the Mean-Square Displacement (MSD) curves is strongly modified. We identify a diffusive regime at intermediate time scales, with an effective diffusion coefficient which is muc…
We present the theory of nonzero temperature ($T$) spin dynamics and transport in one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets with an energy gap $Δ$. For $T << Δ$, we develop a semiclassical picture of thermally excited particles. Multiple inelastic collisions between the particles are crucial, and are described by a two-particle S-matrix which has a super-universal form at low momenta. This is established by computations on the O(3) $σ$-model, and strong and weak coupling expansions (the latter using a Majorana fermion representation) for the two-leg S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder.…
We show that a one-dimensional ordered fermionic lattice system with power-law-decaying hopping, when connected to two baths at its two ends with different chemical potentials at zero temperature, features two phases showing sub-diffusive scaling of conductance with system size. These phases have no analogues in the isolated system (i.e, in absence of the baths) where the transport is perfectly ballistic. In the open system scenario, interestingly, there occurs two chemical-potential-driven sub-diffusive to ballistic phase transitions at zero temperature. We discuss how these phase transitions…
